Reading your story was very interesting.  I live in Louisiana and grew up near the Meeker Sugar Refinery, Meeker, LA.  This mill was owned by the CrackerJack folks of Chicago.  Most of the sugar cane that supplied the mill came by rail from the early 1920s to 1940-50s.  There was a T&amp;P depot here and one of the executives of CrackerJack would travel by rail from Chicago to Meeker which is about 14 miles south of Alexandria on U.S. Highway 71.  He would stay in an apartment attached to the mill office from October to mid-January. The depot was torn down sometime in the 1950-60 area after the mill received no more sugar cane by rail. I have been looking for pictures of this old depot but have had no success. I seem to remember possibly between 1975 and 1990, there was an article about the steam locomotive engineer at Six Flags of Texas, at Arlington,Texas,  and he was a retired T&amp;P locomotive engineer.<br>  I found his name C.J. Gruess aus Texas!  [I lived and worked for a German company, Siemens, in Munich from 1986-88.]<br>From what I've managed to piece together, T&amp;P 638 was not fenced off soon enough and not supervised properly by the State Fair management after its donation.  I don't think anything major was removed except some appliances, cab hardware, and possibly the bell and whistle.  It could have been restored but the T&amp;P was so disgusted by the neglect it forced the State Fair folks to fix it up or scrap it. Howdy Folks, I currently live in Bavaria in Germany.  I was born in Dallas, July 4, 1946.  I retired in 2010 after a 43 year transportaion career.  I served three years with the US Army Transportation Corps and was employed in train service as a switchman in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area with both the Cotton Belt and ATSF as well as here in Germany with the German Federal Railways.  When I was knee high to a Texas grasshopper my grandfather took me down to Fair Park and let me craw all over T&amp;P #638.  Sadly, due to the blindness (or down right stupidity?) of the Fair management she fell onto bad times resulting in some vandalism which resulted in her being scrapped.  <br><br>Does any member know the real story behind this "vandal" act by the management at Fair Park? The description for this classic photograph suggests this train is the Houston and Texas Central's version of the Dallas Morning News train called the "Comet."  It's not!  <br><a href="http://digitalcollections.smu.edu/cdm/singleitem/collection/bel/id/71/rec/39" class="postlink">http://digitalcollections.smu.edu/cdm/s ... /71/rec/39</a><br><br>It's actually the T&amp;P Dallas Morning News train.  H&amp;TC had no locomotive No. 95.  The script lettering on the engineer's side spells out Texas &amp; Pacific.  There's a T&amp;P diamond on the headlight. Hello.  Great to find this form.   I am a former television producer and radio personality of the Odessa, Midland, El Paso and Dallas Fort Worth markets.  Now into my 50s I'm writing romance novels for a global publisher in the Christian Fiction/Historical Genre.   Also a member of the American Christian Fiction Writers organization.   <br><br>I've been crafting a series set in 1925-1933 of Aspermont Texas and my characters traveling by train from Aspermont to Abilene then Abilene to Los Angeles California.  <br><br>My father was from Aspermont growing there from 1927-49.  My grand parents talked often about a train station and line that ran through the area.   What little I can find is in the Stonewall Historical book published in 1978 and a few online articles.  One reads the following:<br><br>"Aspermont was incorporated in 1909 with a population of 700; construction of a lake and water-supply facilities began in 1914. Local businessmen made donations to encourage railroad construction, and the Stamford and Northwestern Railway line was extended from Stamford in 1909 and leased to the Wichita Valley Railway Company."<br><br>Does anyone have any knowledge or information about a line that ran from Aspermont to Stamford to perhaps a T&amp;P station in their East/West Route?   <br><br>What too might a configuration of a train include in say 1925 to about 1935?  Engine (Steam), Coal car, mail car, and coaches, sleepers, and/or both (pullman) with a dining car and what else?   <br><br>What might the fare be to go say Abilene to LA one way (and round trip)?    <br><br>What would be the menu?  And price of food?<br><br>From what maps I have found I see a route from Fort Worth to Abilene, Big Spring, Midland, Odessa, Monahans, Pecos, Toyah, Van Horn, then I believe in Sierra Blanca the T&amp;P joined the SP lines to El Paso.   <br><br>I took Amtrack several times in the 1990s from El Paso to Alpine and then from El Paso to LA (the Sunset Limited). What an adventure!  Then commuters out of LA to Del Mar where I spent Christmas with my brother in law school.   So glad I did and did not drive.   The Depot in LA was still beautiful as is El Paso's.   <br><br>Look forward to whatever can be learned - especially the side tracks that are throughout North Central Texas as the lines / companies mentioned. I've moved to the Abilene area in the past four years and travel to Dallas on a regular basis. I've used bus, car and air on different occasions and found them all inconvenient or uncomfortable. I believe that, given the traffic volumes in and around El Paso, Abilene, Fort Worth and Dallas, there is a need for a new passenger rail connection between these cities. Does anyone feel likewise? If so, I would appreciate any comments via the discussion group. I too appreciate the history of the line.
