With the strange release dates in different cities this time of year it’s difficult to come together and actually have seen the same recent films. Yet we somehow always find a way. Today’s show is just Kurt and Andrew back together for a classic shoot the shit discussion on everything we’ve seen theatrically over the past few weeks – from remastered Halloween classics to the latest Almodóvar and Todd Solondz. We also get into a little early Oscar talk (including the new hosts just announced) and of course weekly DVD choices. No film festival is complete without the inclusion of documentaries. One of the more fascinating documentaries to screen at this year’s Flyway Film Festival was Milking the Rhino. In two of the oldest cattle cultures on earth, some are beginning to see that wildlife conservation can rival the benefits of livestock. Not all community members embrace change however. Shot in some of the world’s most magnificant locales, Milking the Rhino offers complex, intimate portraits of rural Africans in deep cultural change. Matt and I sat down with the associate producer of the film, Xan Aranda, to get a little more of a glimpse into this project. Take a listen below…

So we’ve talked endlessly about Bruce McDonald’s Pontypool over the past year or so and it seems the hype just never stops… which is a good thing as we’re obviously pretty big fans. So it was a nice surprise to find that the producer for the film, Jeff Coghlan, was in town for the Flyway film fest and seemed eager as we are to talk about this project. So if you’re a fan of Pontypool, here’s a little insight into the film and the latest on what’s next for the franchise from someone on the inside.

Around here we’re always looking for new and interesting things in the world of film. When it’s juxtaposed nicely with music we’re all the more excited. So when we heard about this little mash-up, or remix if you will, of the music and imagery from George Romero’s classic, Night of the Living Dead, we were more than just a little intrigued. Much like Girltalk does with music samples, Craig and “400 Lonely Things” manipulates this classic film’s imagery and sound to create it’s own beast: TONIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. Director Gary King has had a really nice relationship with us in the third row over the past year or so. With the release of his latest film, New York Lately, we were instant fans of this warm and humorous film about twenty-somethings finding their way in the bustling waters of New York City. So we’re pretty excited about his almost completed, upcoming project, What’s Up Lovely. Getting a chance to talk with Gary was a treat and we’re looking forward to more of his work in the future… including a zombie movie!?

Pulling aside film makers here at the festival is always a treat – especially when the film maker in question is somewhat of a legend within the circles of a particular sub genre that you love. In this case we managed to get a quick word in with director Pericles “Perry” Lewnes and producer Ed Bishop of the infamous Redneck Zombies and the upcoming Loop. We were treated to a screening of the 20th anniversary edition of Redneck Zombies and they were gracious enough to stop by and answer a few questions. Check out the interview below…

Super thanks to Rian Johnson (Brick/Brothers Bloom) for dropping by and magically rolling with Gamble’s proverbial punches. Making up for Andrew’s illness, Rian throws his four cents into the pool of fantasy that is Where the Wild Things Are and also dropping some Coen Brothers love in a more detailed examination of A Serious Man. With of course the usual DVD talk and bits of other nostalgia and B-films.
