Movie Club Podcast #15: A.I. and Prince of Darkness

It’s the Film Junk podcast crew (Sean and Jay) teaming up with Andrew and Kurt from the RowThree Cinecast in a nice roundtable discussion on two very different films: one mostly forgotten, the other very divisive among film lovers. The former being John Carpenter’s Prince of Darkness and the other is Spielberg’s A.I.: Artificial Intelligence.

The movie club is as much for the listeners as it is the contributors. Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments section over at the movie club page and we’re happy to banter on with a little back and forth. Both of these films (particularly A.I.) were fairly strong in the disagreement department so the more opinions and opposing viewpoints presented the better! Enjoy the show!

Oops! Perhaps a bit fortuitous that I completely forgot/overlooked posting this interview that Matt and I recorded almost a month ago at the Flyway Film Festival with writer/director Jamin Winans and star Chris Kelly of Ink (written review, podcast review). Reason being that Ink is available on DVD today (which was my DVD pick of the week on the latest Cinecast).

So the delay in posting this interview with two super nice guys and fantastic guests was actually all a part of the marketing ploy the producers and I worked out (not really, but let’s pretend okay?). Enjoy the interview and please continue to support independent sci-fi fantasy starting with Ink.

Welcome to another episode of the Cinecast. These Richard Kelly discussions are always fun to get into and we disagree vehemently on almost each one. Enter The Box into our lives. I chose to push the button, Kurt throws the damn thing out the window. It’s a good discussion. We also have sneak peeks of Fantastic Mr. Fox and An Education. We have weekly DVD picks and some of those good old-time conversational tangents as well. An “F” this week in the home-work assignment department as we forgot to dish one out – blasphemous after seeing An Education. Next week we will dive into the portal of time for Mayan scheduled disaster and cheese, we talk bit about Roland Emmerich and rationalizing anticipation for 2012.

Today’s show is just Kurt and Andrew back together for a classic shoot the shit discussion on everything we’ve seen theatrically over the past few weeks – from remastered Halloween classics to the latest Almodóvar and Todd Solondz. No film festival is complete without the inclusion of documentaries. One of the more fascinating documentaries to screen at this year’s Flyway Film Festival was Milking the Rhino. In two of the oldest cattle cultures on earth, some are beginning to see that wildlife conservation can rival the benefits of livestock. Not all community members embrace change however. Shot in some of the world’s most magnificant locales, Milking the Rhino offers complex, intimate portraits of rural Africans in deep cultural change. Matt and I sat down with the associate producer of the film, Xan Aranda, to get a little more of a glimpse into this project. Take a listen below…

Flyway Dispatch 5 – “Pontypool” Producer Jeff Coghlan

So we’ve talked endlessly about Bruce McDonald’s Pontypool over the past year or so and it seems the hype just never stops… which is a good thing as we’re obviously pretty big fans. So it was a nice surprise to find that the producer for the film, Jeff Coghlan, was in town for the Flyway film fest and seemed eager as we are to talk about this project. So if you’re a fan of Pontypool, here’s a little insight into the film and the latest on what’s next for the franchise from someone on the inside.

Flyway Dispatch 4 – Craig Verian: “400 Lonely Things”

Around here we’re always looking for new and interesting things in the world of film. When it’s juxtaposed nicely with music we’re all the more excited. So when we heard about this little mash-up, or remix if you will, of the music and imagery from George Romero’s classic, Night of the Living Dead, we were more than just a little intrigued. Much like Girltalk does with music samples, Craig and “400 Lonely Things” manipulates this classic film’s imagery and sound to create it’s own beast: TONIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. Director Gary King has had a really nice relationship with us in the third row over the past year or so. With the release of his latest film, New York Lately, we were instant fans of this warm and humorous film about twenty-somethings finding their way in the bustling waters of New York City. So we’re pretty excited about his almost completed, upcoming project, What’s Up Lovely. Getting a chance to talk with Gary was a treat and we’re looking forward to more of his work in the future… including a zombie movie!?

Flyway Dispatch 2 – “Redneck Zombies” Interview

Pulling aside film makers here at the festival is always a treat – especially when the film maker in question is somewhat of a legend within the circles of a particular sub genre that you love. In this case we managed to get a quick word in with director Pericles “Perry” Lewnes and producer Ed Bishop of the infamous Redneck Zombies and the upcoming Loop. We were treated to a screening of the 20th anniversary edition of Redneck Zombies and they were gracious enough to stop by and answer a few questions. Check out the interview below…
