Well, we left the 700 mark far behind us and moving quickly forward to the 800 mark, well, technically we are already beyond that mark as well, if we would consider each font within a multi-fonts set as single “font”.

Last month was the most productive month of all with regards to new additions as well as extensions of already existing fonts.

I also used some of the fonts for some new ANSIs of mine. Check out these:

I am also making progress with my “Ansi Text Editor (ATE)” tool. I just solved a major resources problem, which caused the tool to eat up enormous amounts of memory and then eventually crashed. Well, yeah, it had to do with the fact that there are hundreds of ANSI fonts to manage, but still….

I was first so na??ve to believe that an application has automatically write permissions to its own program directory. I wanted to store the index in simple text format and the previews as plain bitmap files, but nope, you cannot. My second approach was to dump stuff somewhere into the App Data hell hole, which opened a whole other can or worms for me. Even the “Application Setup Management Wizard” warned and discouraged me to dump stuff there, which I found a little bit disturbing (p.s. the \Users\USERNAME\AppData\... used to be “\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\...” and “\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\...” in Windows 95 to Windows XP).

Anyhow, I then moved away from individual preview image files and plain text index (third approach) and put everything into a MS SQL Compact 3.5 Database. So far, so good, The Data Wizard in Visual Studio made integration fairly simple. It auto generated code with classes and methods to access the data in the database. However, I always ended up with the entire database loaded into memory, which is by now already over 50 MB! I also got some locking issues, preventing access to data that I needed to update, so I had to run some extra code at program start to synchronize stuff, which was pretty annoying, because it made the ANSI fonts inaccessible to for a few minutes, every time to started the application.

So I decided to re-evaluate the whole thing for a fourth time and use now my own direct code to access the data in the database. Yes, that meant for me to manage a lot more custom code of mine, but then hell, I also had to dump the standard “viewer” controls (ListView, DatagridView etc.) and write my own custom ones as well, because with the standard control did I also ended up with everything loaded into memory all the time. Now with the custom code, the controls are “buffered“, meaning, I only load that, what the user currently sees. Once the user scrolls, it’s dumping the stuff that moves out of view and loads what is now visible. Also no more locking issue, which made the whole initialization crap at program start unnecessary, yeah.

So where are things stored now?

Font files and fonts collection index database which also includes the small and full image previews is for initial installations installed to “C:\ANSIFonts“, if the “All Users” option was chosen during the setup (which I strongly recommend using). But, if the “Current User Only” option is selected, I have not much of a choice and must dump stuff again into the “\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\..” folder. There it uses the same folder name as program directory name chosen by the user for the main application and a sub folder called ANSIFonts. However, regardless if installed for “All Users” or “Current User Only”, there is the option to change the location of the fonts folder manually via the “View\Settings” screen of the Editor Application itself. Future program updates will then automatically use that location for font data updates.

System fonts and the System Fonts index database on the other hand are by default installed in the “\ProgramData\AnsiTextEditor\Fnt” folder. I believe the “\ProgramData” location was introduced with Windows 7 (or maybe Vista). It became the replacement for the “\Documents and Settings\All Users\...” location, adding even more to the confusion about where the hell Windoof stores application and user data.

I am planning to make that path location also a customizable setting to allow folks to store the stuff wherever the hell they want. I for example started to install many applications outside the “Program Files” and “Program Files (x86)” folder to a local folder called “Programs” and “Application Data” to “Documents” (e.g. “\Documents\ANSIFonts”), if an application allows it.

The current copyright laws are so messed up that it is impossible for an average person to make heads or tails out of them, that it requires a highly specialized person or better even group of persons who can up with the best tale to tell, to convince a judge, who is also unable to make up heads and tails in most curt cases what the head is and what the tail (or who) and thus, who has to be right and who could possibly not.??

I was affected by the copyright laws myself in more than just one single case and also made in more recent days more and more eyewitness account of events that I would have a hard time believing myself, If I would not have seen them happen with my own pair of eyes. I was talking about some of those experiences already in the past at my personal blog and elsewhere and actually wanted to something about this subject. This is now my first attempt of doing just that.??

I collected a lot of??material and information to the subject of copyright laws and the problems with them in the current society over the past few years*1, which are the basis for this article. I put it on ???Google Docs??? and made the documents accessible publicly *1. I will take you along on a historic journey to the early beginnings and roots of modern day intellectual property laws and their interpretations by lawyers, big companies who benefit today from the laws how they are working today and about ordinary people like me and probably you as well, who were, are and will continue to be made to criminals even though not realizing this by themselves, until they find out first hand viva a “nice” and well formed message from some Lawyer from across the country who claims over-ship on some of your stuff or what you did and making all hell suddenly break loose for you all at once.

History

• Monarchy. The first copyrights were publishers?????rights to print copies. Licensing Act of 1557 by Queen Anne, which expired in 1694, granted exclusive printing monopoly to the Stationers Company and ensure control over which books were published or banned
• Republic. The Statute of Anne*1 passed in 1710 by Parliament. The Statute declared authors (not publishers) to be owners of their works and limited the copyright term. The Statute???s aim was not to create an author???s copyright but to break the Stationers Company???s monopoly.
• 20th century. Increase of the duration of copyright to lifetime plus 70 years, redefining the means of protection and the types of intellectual property.??
• Until the middle of the 19th century, copyright meant only protection against verbatim copying. End of the 19th century, this was redefined so that the property protected by copyright consisted (against Fichte???s definition) in the substance, and not in the form alone – which meant translations were also subject to copyright. Later this protection was extended to any close approximation of the original, like the plot of a novel or play or the use of the characters from a movie or book to create a sequel.??
• Types used to be limited to printed matter, changed with new technology of reproduction: words, sounds, photographs, moving images, digital information. At the beginning of the 20th century copyright was extended from covering texts to covering ???works.??? ??

The traditional notion of property, as something that can be possessed to the exclusion of others, is irreconcilable with intangibles like ideas. In order to document the public perception of copyright today, QuestionCopyright.org went around Chicago with a video camera over two days in the summer of 2006, asking strangers what they think copyright is for, how it got started, how they feel about file-sharing, and for any other thoughts they have on copyright.

The points that showed up consistently were:??????

1. Most people felt that copyright is mainly about credit, that is, about preventing plagiarism.
2. Everyone was on the artist’s side ??? everyone wants to feel that they’re treating the artist???s right. Over and over again, we heard the sentiment that when someone goes to a concert they’ll buy the CD “to support the band”, even if they already have all those songs on their computer already.
3. Many people felt that copyright was about giving creators the means to make a living, but that in recent times it’s been abused and corrupted by corporate interests.
4. No one ??? not even the interviewee who had just read a book on copyright ??? knew where copyright comes from. Most people had the feeling it had been around for a while, though estimates varied widely on how long. One interviewee knew of the Constitutional clause that is the legal basis for copyright in the United States, but wasn’t familiar with the history leading up to that clause.
5. People were ambivalent about file-sharing. They don’t feel like it hurts anyone, except perhaps the music distributors, but they still feel some residual guilt about it anyway. ??

Some Facts

• Legal issues, exceptions yes, but vary between countries????
• appropriation ??in art is almost always located in the legal grey area, especially in the United States with its copyright laws and fair use exceptions, which are blurry and not clear defined????
• Issue in the united states is also the constitutional nature of copyright (Article I, Section 8, Clause 8 or Copyright Clause*1)??????“To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries.”,????
  ??whereas in any other country copyright is only a statue to a right. In a case of copyright infringement does the constitutional right of copyright goes head to head with the first amendment to the US constitution*2, which is part of the bill or rights and protects the freedom of speech and (artistic) expression. Since both are constitutional rights is it less clear which side has a better chance to win, although praxis shows that it more favors the side of the copyright holder (which is IMO directly related to who is usually on which side of the conflict and the financial and economic might that usually represents the party who claims the infringement). In other countries is the balance shifted due to the fact that the freedom of speech and expression is usually also a fundamental right there, but copyright is not.
• The number of copyright infringement cases, specifically for cases of appropriation, is generally low, but only because there are not many cases making it to the court, does not mean that there is no bigger issue behind it. Most cases settle before it comes to a court case, although “settle” might not be the right term for the takedown, destruction or removal of the allegedly infringing material by the artist (or the publishing website, e.g. YouTube and other video sharing websites in case of video art), after he received a legal notice by the copyright owner with the thread of legal actions that are always costly, regardless if you feel to be right or not. The act of infringement also becomes in most cases only an issue, if your art is noticed and becomes popular and potentially commercially relevant. Many infringements are just ignored, but that only means that many artists, especially the ones who work in the area of appropriation or might qualify for any fair use clause are potentially endangered to be sued one day, if their works is recognized.

There are also recommendations made to get permission from the copyright owner beforehand. The problem is that it is in most cases very hard to impossible to determine who owns what rights on material, how to contact them or how to find out the price for using the content. The price can be anything or the owner can entirely refuse the permission, which is also very common, mostly because the owner does not want to spend the time to look at the request and come to an agreement; this however restricts the artistic freedom of the artist significantly. Since you hear time and again that this is the usual case, recommendations are made to avoid anything that was produced by somebody who still lives and isn’t dead for 70 years (when copyright protection automatically expires). This is censorship, not enforced at gun-point but via economic threats, worse; it???s now a self censorship, by the artist himself or by the artist’s publisher out of fear, even if probably no lawsuit or legal notice will occur. This has impact on the artistic development of the society in general, because art is not a reflection of society anymore, at least the contemporary art, which is by default cut off or limited in access to contemporary content.??

Remix Culture or Read/Write Society

Remixes, Appropriations, Mash-Ups – is an artistic expression of the current digital age. It is taking somebody else???s content (copyrighted or/and free) and re-interpreting it, creating something else, something new out of it that was not inherent in the original content and also not intended or even imagined by the original creator. There is the presumption today that this type of activity is illegal and immoral. Methods are being revised and refined by companies to detect any copyrighted material and automatically remove it or take “ownership” of it, without evaluating if the fair-use exemption might applies or how many work was going into this new piece of art that should be protected by copyright also. I am referring to YouTube’s Video Identification tool. “Rights owners can choose to block, track or monetize their content.” Who gives them this right? What about the rights of the creators of the new content???

Common sense is not the term I would use to describe the application of the current laws to today???s realities. Kids of today use common sense and ignore the law. The enforcement of the laws alienates those kids even more and out of disrespect becomes hatred against the current laws and disrespect.

Professor Larry Lessing, Lawyer for internet law stated in his Ted.com Talk “How Creativity is being Strangled by the Law”*1 the following:??

“You can’t kill the instinct the technology produces, we can only criminalize it.??

We can’t stop our kids from using it; we can only drive it underground.??

We can’t make our kids passive again; we can only make them “pirates”.”??

I highly recommend watching the 19 minutes video with Professor Lessing. He did a good job illustrating this particular aspect of the issue, but this is not the only issue. There is more to it.??

Educational purposes, interpretation, review, documentation, historic authenticity preservation. Non-Commercial uses of copyrighted material for those purposes must be free in a democratic society. The first amendment must take precedence over the Copyright Clause. The ability to use of copyright law to control distribution and access to information must be demolished.?? The ability to suppress and withhold historic content and information was and still is used to this day to manipulate the opinions of people and to control them. Every dictatorship in the history of mankind relied on the suppression of facts that would have allowed people to draw their own conclusions, which would have been the end of any dictatorship before it would have been able to materialize. Many dictatorships came to an end after the mounting pressure of suppressed facts could not be hold back enough anymore. However, if the content is of none historic significant, social or political character, interests of creators of content and ???art??? should be protected, but without restricting other artists to do art also. Since current laws are inadequate, everybody with social responsibility should help to find alternative ways and options to come to a solution where nobody loses and everybody wins. This is possible, but hardly done today.??

While content sharing sites like the video sharing web site ???YouTube???, which is today owned by Google, implement more and more sophisticated tools to detect possibly infringing material (video and audio) and provide owners of intellectual property with new tools to make an ownership claim of content that was published on the YouTube web site, only little to nothing is done to help protect publishers rights or to help them and the entities who claim rights on the whole or only parts of a published video to reach a mutual beneficial consensus. The only option a publisher gets is filing a counter notice or accept whatever the claiming party and Google does, which can be several things, from allowing the content to stay up on the site, but with additional ads that benefit the claiming party, muting the audio of a video, if only that part allegedly infringes 3rd party rights or worst case, the complete removal of the content and a warning to the publisher, followed by an account termination after the 3rd warning, regardless of the accounts activity beyond that (like ratio between claims made and amount of content published altogether).?? This happened to me twice already and I won???t go into the details of it. I wrote an open letter to YouTube, which can be accessed at my personal blog*1. The filing of a counter notice is not really helping publishers, specifically the non-professionals, because this typically requires the involvement of an attorney, starting a costly process, which most publishers cannot afford or are not willing to pay for a non-commercial ???hobby??? activity. There are options in between, which could and probably would benefit all parties involved, including Google, if they are serious and willing to come to a consensus. The laws need to change, no doubt about that, but that won???t happen quickly, so it is everybody???s responsible to work out practicable solutions that might translate later into actual law, if they have proven to be effective.??

The Losses Through Piracy Myth

Publishers bring virtually always up the argument how piracy creates huge losses for them and for the intellectual property owners/artists etc. They use this argument as one of the key reasons for their demands to tighten and extend copyright laws further and further. Even lobbying for the effectively dismantling of fundamental privacy rights*1 in order to protect their own commercial interests regardless the cost for society as a whole. The biggest problem with this argument is the proven fact that it is actually not true. Independent studies*2 and well researched reports*3, not funded by the media companies themselves and not done by copyright activists or ???extremists??? show that the claimed losses are only a myth without substance and that piracy even benefits producers of quality content financially in the long run.??

• For every 150 copies downloaded 1 sale that would not have occurred otherwise

Conclusions??

1. Don???t push for more severe copyright laws that only serve the purpose of controlling distribution and availability.??
   Copyright is about protecting visual, audio or written content producers from getting booted out of their share of business made with what they created, it???s not meant and never was meant as a tool to control distribution.??
2. If somebody is not a potential customer of yours, due to availability, pricing and other restrictions, do not consider that person to be somebody who is causing a loss in revenue for you (if he does, that probably means that this person exposed you and your attempt to rip paying customers off). If your content is great, this person will actually help increase your revenue, because if he likes it, then he will recommend it to people who ARE your customers. Meanwhile think about ways to make more of those ???not your potential customers??? to potential customers, via changes in availability, pricing and the removal of other restrictions and reasons that prevents people from becoming a potential customer.*1

1. Don???t add protection to your content that interferes with the usage of your content by your paying customers. If a ???crack????? works like a fix, you ask people to go and look for that crack. They may never come back, because they are still mad at you that they got screwed because they paid money for something that was not usable as it should have been.
2. If something is ****, then there is nothing to protect, except the interest of the **** producer who asks for payment before providing access to his content and then makes it virtually impossible to return it when the ripped off customers looked through the scam.
3. If something is good and honest, people will give, pay, support, evangelize etc. That is what the vast majority of people are doing who were taught at least some basic social skills and always did. If you watched a street artist who was giving a great performance that you liked, you will give him money, if you have money to give. However, if you are forced at gun-point to pay up, regardless if you liked it or even watched it in full (or at least most of it) and if the pay is on top of that unreasonable high, people will be pissed off and they would have all reason for it.
4. If your content is being appropriated by somebody else, find a solution that benefits both of you. Virtually anybody will give due credits and will do so, if they forgot or did not knew and are contacted by the original creator.
   Depending on the amount of content used in relationship to the complete work where it was used and its nature (non-profit, hobby, educational, semi-commercial etc.) try to find some acceptable solution that can work for everybody. This could be anything, from adding a link to your web site, a special ad that benefits you, an agreement for revenue share, if revenue is generated (or might be generated in the future, if it becomes popular) that can be shared in the first place. Look at the publisher and check, if this might be a potential partner and evangelist for your products or could benefit your business in other ways. A legal threat is not the way to make new friends and acquire new partners and might backfires, if you don???t know who you are dealing with (it does not have to be an economical force to damage your business, a social force can do that just as good, if not even better).

The publishers today are doing exactly that, putting a gun at peoples head and cry for the cops to even back up their claims. That is not the best way to make friends and create a supporter base… I???d say.??

Yet today, only a few days after I made this statement and one day after I breached the targeted mark, the count in my collection dropped significantly to “only” 677 fonts, 23 fonts away from the 700 mark. What happened?

Don’t panic! There wasn’t a system crash that wiped out dozens of fonts or anything of that nature.

A small number of reductions is caused by the removal of original font versions from other artists, where I took the liberty to extend the font set by missing characters, but kept the original characters that were already there unchanged. That made absolute sense, because those were real duplicates, which I only kept in my individual files collection, but long but removed from any font sets collection packages etc. However, those were only about half a dozen fonts or so.

The majority of??”disappearances” are caused by consolidating fonts that were merely different colored versions of the same font type to a single “mini” collection each. The smallest may only contains 2 individual fonts, while the largest has a staggering number of 18 individual fonts, only appearing as a single “font” item in my collection. The average though is 4 to 5 fonts per type.

Counting all derived colored versions as single font, the total number of fonts currently available would be way beyond the 700 mark, at about 730, give or take a few. “Nicht schlecht Herr Specht.” hehe.

Other News: I also release a new beta version of my ANSI TEXT EDITOR (ATE) Tool (Current Version 1.0.2B), which fully supports TheDraw fonts as well as Figlet ASCII fonts, but also using its own proprietary format to remedy the limitations and shortcomings set by the .TDF file format, such as the maximum letter size of 32×12 characters. That is also the reason why the fonts are saved by ATE in its own file format, which specifications are public and documented: .ATEF ANSI Font File Format Specifiations V1.0.

The previous release version was about adding new and fixing existing features of the tool, such as additional font types import support or the build in TheDraw ANSI Text Editor launched in the DOSBOX MS DOS Emulator Tool.

This release is about the interface and general usability of the tool.

The biggest change is that there is now only one “ADD” Button. Previously there was a “Load” button to load .TDFX or .TDF fonts collections and a “+” button right next to the fonts list to add additional .TDF Fonts to the listing. Each of them only supported the selection of a single individual file. With Version 1.2.0 and the added support for .ATEF and .FIGLET Font Files, you also had to select the font type first before you could add it.

Now with the new prominent “ADD” button you can select one??or many supported font file types in one step. It does not matter, if you select one or more .TDFX or .TDF collection files and/or one or more .ATEF (ANSI Text Editor Font File)??or??Figlet font files.

The font listing previously only allowed??selecting a single font, which made it cumbersome to remove or manually re-sort??many fonts in a collection. Now it is possible to select multiple fonts in the list and remove or move them all at once. It’s using the standard Windows controls; Hold the “SHIFT” key to select a RANGE or the “CTRL” (Control) key to append a single item to the selected list.

There is now also another setting available in the “Settings” screen. “Ask for Confirmations” ON/OFF to toggle if the tool should show and ask for confirmations for most actions or leave it be. More advanced users might want to make use of the setting, because it can speed up the list management process considerably.

Custom Preview Text (fixed)??

The not working feature to specify a custom preview text that I introduced to Version 1.0.1.0 is now working. I did not even noticed the bug myself until I wrapped up the current version, that’s why I did not release a bug fix earlier already.

Anyhow. I think its a nice feature, especially, if you are looking for an ANSI logo for your group, site or whatever and want to see right away, how it looks in a particular font. This makes even more sense now, since the number of fonts already included as extra in the ZIP package is way beyond 550! by now (actually close to 580).

Yeah, that’s right, simple as that; right click on the font and select “Launch in TheDraw” and DOSBOX auto-launches, auto-starting TheDraw and activating the selected font for immediate use in the Tool.

Figlet Fonts Import / ATE Fonts Import/Export

Figlet is a cross-platform format for ASCII art fonts, which was quite popular for a while, back in the 1990’s. I actually imported a bunch of those fonts myself and made them part of my huge fonts collection already.

Keep in mind that TheDraw fonts are limited in Size. It only supports font sizes up to 30 characters wide and 12 characters high (See TDF File format specifications). Figlet does not have this limitation. During the import, fonts that are too large, are simply cut-off after the maximum of 30/12 characters.

.ATEF is the file format used by my (beta) ANSI Text Editor (ATE). The tool now supports import as well as export in this format for your convenience (ATE Tools Home Page).

Over 550 ANSI & ASCII Fonts

Included in the release .ZIP archive is my current collection of TheDraw fonts??in two formats.

1. A single collections file in .TDFX Format (Custom Format used by this Tool) (FontsColli\TDFONTSALL.TDFX. It is not copied to the program directory via the installer, so make sure that you copy it someplace else and not discard it after you finished the installation!)
2. Folder “TDFSets” with a bunch of files. Remember, the .TDF format can only hold up to 34 individual fonts, so I had to cut up the collection into a number of sets of 34 fonts each. Use the CONTENT.TXT to find a font (It’s basically the index). If you copy it into a sub directory of where you have TheDraw installed, you can use the included batch script SELECTDF.BAT to copy the desired font set file as current TDFONTS.TDF into the TheDraw directory.

Here is another tutorial for “Oldskool Demomaker” users out there. This time not a tutorial for an entire demo, but some general tips for creating your own multi-part demos with OSDM.

This tutorial was originally published in 2010 at the OSDM Support Wiki. I decided to re-post it at my blog, because the Wiki wasn’t always up and running, as much as my own site unfortunately. Anyway, consider this another backup, just in case hehe.

If your productions grow bigger and your script code longer, it makes sense to start structuring your code to keep things clean and organized and avoid headaches later on.

Here is how I usually structure the code for my own multi-part demos that are entirely controlled via OSDM Script.

The general idea behind this structure is to “split” your demo into multiple “mini demos” and keep them pretty much independent from each other. That makes it easy to add additional parts or to rearrange the order of your existing parts. There are typically some exceptions, like the music, which does not necessarily change with every part of the demo (although it could of course).

Each part starts with the display stopped, which allows the loading and initializing of the effects that you are going to use for the part without showing any artifacts on the screen visible for the viewer of your demo. Once everything is in place you enable the display to fade in your initial setup of the part. Then you do all the things that you want to do, like moving things around fade in or out sprites or activate effects that were not needed during part loading. Once done, you stop the display followed by a NOP = 1 to let it fade-out nicely. Then you clean up house and disable all the effects that you were using for the part. You do that for all the parts and it should not happen that effects from other demo parts interfere with the currently active one and it also keeps your script code organized and structured.

VBScript to Win32 Executable Tool

My VBS2EXEcutable tool used to be GUI only. Using the tool myself to generate quick “Uninstall” links for most of my tools that the user does not have to search for it in the Windows Control Panel, I realized that a command line version is really what I need, to generate a new Uninstaller EXE via a pre-configured batch file in the programs project directory.

.FNT Tool Editor

I just introduced this little tool a couple days ago and already there is an update :).

I thought that it would be neat to include a font editor to manipulate individual characters or create a whole new font yourself altogether.

That was actually not that hard to implement. You can find screenshots and the new version 1.1 for download at the .FNT Tool main product page on my web site.??

I saw this format first in the source code of an earlier version of PabloDraw by Curtis Wensley aka Eto and found it very useful.

I saw it again used for a EGA/VGA DOS Font collection from 1992 by Joseph (Yossi) Gil (fntcol16.zip), which also comes with a set of tools, such as BREAKCPI.COM, which breaks the current EGA.CPI into fonts or DUMPFONT.COM, which is another tool to extract system fonts.

The fonts are naturally all bitmap fonts, mono-spaced and monochrome (black/white). The size per character is usually one of the following (Width X Height in pixels): 8×8, 8×14 or 8×16 pixels. The font files in the collection by Joseph lack the “HEADER” though, meaning the width and height information are not part of the file. He simply used the file extensions “Fxx“, where “xx” specified the height (width wasn’t needed, because all his fonts had the same width (8 pixels)). Since I added a header to all the fonts in his collection and made it part of mine, you don’t have to worry about that anymore. However, if you happen to use one of his tools to extract new fonts, you can add a header very easily by using the DOS command: “copy /b Fxx.BIN + FONTFILE.FNT NEWFONTFILE.FNT“

“Fxx.BIN” should be one of the files from this archive , depending on the font HEIGHT, e.g. F08.BIN or F16.BIN.

But enough of this and lets get to the actual stuff here.

The .FNT file format that I am introducing here allows for space efficient and relatively simple storage of monochrome (black/white) bitmap font information for the use in any kind of tool that need to emulate a specific and non-standard character set, such as the display of ANSI and ASCII text art from old MS DOS PC’s or Commodore Amiga, Atari ST/Falcon 16 bit systems or PETSCII and ATASCII art from the Commodore 64 and Atari 400/800, ZX Spectrum, Apple II 8 Bit home computers.

My font tool allows easy and quick conversion of bitmap representations of those fonts to a re-usable and generally compatible format to be used by programmers. It also has a preview feature to look at already converted .FNT files that you might get or download somewhere else.

.FNT File Specifications

Types

1. Byte – Single 8 Bits Byte/Character
2. Word – 2 Bytes Unsigned Short Integer in Little Endian Byte Order

Header

Character Data

Each Point/Pixel is stored in a single bit. So for each row of a 8 pixels wide character 1 byte is used. For a 16 pixels per character wide font, 2 bytes would be used for a single row. The bit order is again little endian (right to left). Character data are stored line by line, so for an 8 pixels wide and 16 pixels high font, each character would take up 16 bytes, or 4,096 bytes for a complete set of 256 characters, making the resulting .FNT file including its 6 byte header 4,102 bytes in size.

Again as a reminder:
Because of the Little Endian bit order the Characters appear mirrowed on the Y Axis (flip the bits in a byte) in the .FNT file.

More New TheDraw .TDF ANSI Fonts, Yeah!

If you saw my post about by ANSI Editor beta release, you saw already that I added a bunch of new fonts?? to my TheDraw ANSI Fonts Collection. What you might not know is the fact, that I actually updated the post many times since it was originally published, adding more and more fonts to the list. I started with 9 Fonts, I believe, well, now its 48!! new fonts in that post alone… and it never stopped. There are more new fonts and more fonts to come on the horizon, so stay tuned!

Volume I contained back then about 600 files, Volume II today has over 1,000 files now, again pixel art fonts ripped and captured from Crack Intros, Demos and Games across most major release platforms. The fonts are somewhat sorted like the last time around, namely by font size. Also like last time, there are many dupes, or more accurately.. near dupes, mostly because of slight variations in the graphics files for various reason. Again, my motto is:

“Rather have it twice or more than not at all!”

I created a new RoySAC.com release intro for this occasion, yes, again using OSDM for the job (I hadn’t have the time yet to get my head around Intro Maniac, sorry). Unlike most of my previous OSDM productions , there is no full-screen version available for this new release of mine. It makes use of the “Skin” feature of OSDM, which can’t be used for intro productions running in full-screen mode. The skin became integrated into the theme for the intro that releasing a full-screen version without theme was out of the question. This created a small problem for myself again, when it came to create a video capture recording of the intro. None of the tools I am using is able to capture the skin.

The solution was the creation of a special version of the intro just for the purpose of the video capture, which emulates a skin. It’s not 100% like the real deal, but isn’t it always, if you try to emulate something original?

The Editor is still in Beta and not 100% stable. There are also bugs here and there which I am currently working on eliminating. Nevertheless, I think the current state of the tool allows me to make it public, especially to be able to get some feedback, comments and suggestions from you guys out there, who are still into good old ANSI/ASCII Text Art like me :). You will recognize many features from the mentioned editors. This tool has some unique features of its own though, such as:

• ANSI Font System (to Create, Edit and Use Custom ANSI Fonts) similar to the one provided by TheDraw (but without the limitations in width/height). Import and Export option for TheDraw fonts.
• Smart Vertical & Horizontal Flip Tool
• Flat Color and Color Gradient Fill Tools
• Re-Coloring Tool for ANSI Screens and for Fonts (I used that one to create variations of existing TheDraw fonts actually. More about that in a minute)
• Color Masks, Free Paint Tool, Eraser, Move, Copy, Cut, Clear etc.
• Full and Half font size modes
• Grid Overlay Feature for orientation
• SixteenColors.NET Browser
• Odd ANSI Sizes Supported (Beyond 80 or 160 wide), might not be usable with any other tool though
• ANSIs over 100 Lines supported (dough.. Well TheDraw has that limit, so I decided to mention this anyway :))

I incorporated many of the unique features of my previous ANSI related tools into this one, such as the export to HTML for the Web (yes, ANSI’s and ASCII’s), Export of ASCII’s to Unicode (UTF-16 (Example and UTF-8 Example) Text Files, as well as Export to various Image Formats (.PNG, .BMP, .JPG, .ICO, .GIF).

The tool supports the following file formats for loading and saving your art: ANSI (.ANS), ASCII (no colors) (.ASC), PCBoard (.PCB), Wildcat 2.X (.WC2), Wildcat 3.X (.WC3), Avatar (.AVT), Binary Text (160 columns) (.BIN).

There is unfortunately no support for ANSI Animations yet. I might add this in the future, but my problem is, that I am myself not very familiar with ANSI Animations. I never created any. I know that TheDraw supports ANSI Animations, but from the look at it, the Editing tool is unique to TheDraw and very confusing (in other words, you cannot just start playing around with it and expect any usable results quickly). Are there other tools that were used to create ANSI animations in the past?

Blinking ANSI colors are supported though (See Example here). I added that part very late and just as an after thought, but I thought that some folks might like this. I myself only created a handful of ANSIs with blinking colors and only when I started out creating text art in 1992/93. The blinking is also supported for the HTML/WEB Export (some JavaScript code added).

Thanks to my editor, I created a bunch of new ANSI Fonts and updated several existing ones as well. My TheDraw Fonts Collection was bumped up to over 233 Fonts by now. Here are some of the entirely NEW fonts I created:

Carsten aka Roy/SAC speaking again. This time about Text Art (yeah, can you actually believe it? hehe). It has been ages.. or well at least 2-3 years that I fulfilled any art requests, but yeah, believe it or not, I actually managed to finish two requests for ASCII art, which I both received via PM at DeviantArt.

The first one was a complete NFO file design for a group called “Reverse The Noob”, short RTN. Never heard of the group before, so no clue what kind of stuff they release. I decided to go with a Newskool ASCII design (I did that for both ASCII requests actually). Next to the logo I also created the NFO file body for the release information and member lists etc.

The second request was somewhat commercial in nature, although I myself did not get paid for this (that’s a principle of mine, remember?*). It’s for a developer tool called “Sidekiq Pro“.

Here is what the web site for the tool has to say about itself:

Sidekiq Pro is a collection of useful functionality for the open source Sidekiq library.

The tools costs $75 per year (subscription model). There you have it.

* Note: I wanted to clarify this statement a bit more. Yes, I don’t do art for hire (getting paid to do it), however, I do accept and appreciate voluntary donations to support “the cause” and to help paying the site hosting fees etc. One does not have to do with the other, meaning, not donating does not decreases the odds that I will actually do and finish an art request and making a donation does not necessarily help you with the problem of me accepting your art request.

In addition to fulfilling my first two art requests in ages, I decided to spoil myself a little and created a new RoySAC.com NFO file header. It’s derived from the previous version of the RoySAC.com release NFO.

As you probably noticed, this version is much fuller in body than the old one and that lead me to also create a colored ANSI version of it shortly after.

I played around with the ANSI Version a little bit more and decided to create an oversized .BIN Ansi of it. .BIN Ansi have a width of 160 characters, that’s twice the width of regular ANSI Text Files.

What Else Is New?

• I added a couple new articles and tutorials to the ASCII Art Academy section of my site.
  1. ANSI.SYS Documentation and Referene
  2. The FIGfont Version 2 FIGfont and FIGdriver Standard
  3. Female Character Drawing by Enzo/Blocktronics (from their latest Art Pack release)
• I added a bunch of new ANSI’s to the gallery with ANSI Text Art done by other Artists. It now shows over 300 pieces of marvelous ANSI art.
• The Ansimations (ANSI Animations) Gallery was stocked up to 140 pieces of Text Art. I also added some of my videos of ANSI Animations were I supplied a custom Voiceover to the gallery intro page.
• The Dytec – Dynamic Technologies group pages were extended by 9 more Commodore 64 crack intros, which I found on the Net and video captured. That increases the total Dytec cracktros across all three platforms (C64, Commodore Amiga and IBM PC) to a whopping 62!!!
• I added a couple more educational videos by Chris “Rad Man/ACiD” Wirth to my Videos Section. I also re-uploaded the BBS Documentary videos to Vimeo since they are no longer available via Google Video (They shut down their service, in the case that you have not noticed that yet :().

But Now Really! So Long…

.TDF Files are font files for TheDraw, the ANSI Text Editor for MS-DOS. The Editor comes with a tool for managing .TDF files called TDFONTS.EXE, but my tool provides some features that are not provided by the original tool. Also my tool is for Windows, meaning that you don’t need an MS DOS Emulator like DOSBOX etc. to run it.

Note that this is not an official specifications document, I reverse engineered it by testing, so there might be cases I am unaware of, although I am pretty confident that I covered everything about it.

“TheDraw” Fonts Files have the extension “.TDF” (which is short for “TheDraw Font” duh :)).

One .TDF Fonts file is by default designed as a “collection” of multiple fonts, even if it only holds a single font (like after exporting a single font to an extra file). It can hold up to 34 fonts. More are not possible, if used with TheDraw itself or with it’s external TDFONTS.EXE Fonts Editor utility.

An empty fonts file without any font in it yet is always 232 bytes in size. The actual character data are always stored after those 232 bytes and can vary in size, depending on the size, type and complexity of the font characters. Every additional font added to the collection is 212 bytes long if without any character data.

Font Character

** The Max Height Value is not reliable. If a line ends with a &, this line is not counted in the Max Height. For Example, if a character is 6 lines high and line 5 and line 4 end with a & character, the value for Max Height will be 4 and not 6. The Max Height value can only be used to determine the “Line Height” to determine where to position the cursor after a line-break. To read the full character data, always read to the Null (Chr(0)) terminator.

Byte 1 (All Font Types)

The individual characters for Fonts of type “Block” or “Outline” are single bytes only where “Block” using the actual ASCII character code. For Fonts of type “Color“, each character takes up 2 bytes. The first byte is the character itself and the 2nd byte is to specify the background and foreground colors used for the character. “Outline” Font Types store Letters, which are used as character reference. For visualization purposes you might want to use the following mapping.

Byte 2 (“Color” Font Type Only)

00 - FF, the first part (or Floor(Value / 16)) holds the background color (0,1,2,3 .. max. 7) and the second part (or Value mod 16) holds the foreground color (0,1,2,3 .. max. F). See the Color Table below for the available colors.

The end of each line in the character is terminated by the Carriage Return character (ASC(13) or 0Dh)

A character value = 0 (Null) indicates the end of the current character (Note: that a color value of “00” for fonts of type “Color” is perfectly legal and should not be interpreted as Null termination).

General Notes

• If the current line is being terminated before the specified “Max. Width” is reached, everything after the break will be treated as non-existent or transparent space. I tried to illustrate this behavior in the following drawing.
• If the characters of your “Color” font are too large, TheDraw might run into a problem because the space needed exceed the maximum possible offset value in the font base definition. Keep in mind that only 2 bytes are reserved, providing a max. offset of 65534 (=FEh, remember that FFh = no character defined). Taking a color font using 2 bytes per char and maximum dimensions per character of 30×12 + up-to 11 line-breaks and 1 null termination for a total of 94 characters, you are running out of address space much earlier than the end of character 93.
• Remember that the “Outline” font type has restrictions regarding the use of characters. Those rules are enforced by the font-editor tool though and not by the font file format, so be careful, if you are going to create new .TDF font files yourself.
• If a character is created using the “Copy” character feature by the TDFonts.exe font editor, the target character will point to the same offset position for the character data as the source character. Only if the target character is changed afterwards will the character data be stored at a different offset location. This reduces space and can be solution for the address space issue mentioned at the first bullet point.

Pay special attention to how the top/right of the outside border, and the bottom/left of the inside border were done. Of particular importance are the corners. The following characters must be used in the described locations.

In general the drawing rules are:

• Double lines are always the rightmost side of a column.
• Double lines are always the topmost side of a beam.

RESERVED CHARACTERS
The reserved characters are for solid spaces and descender line markers. Typically solid spaces are used to fill the inside of columns and beams. These are drawn with “???” characters. ie:

TheDraw specially tracks descenders so to align symbols and handle carriage returns properly. A carriage return should move the same number of lines for either A’s or Q’s for instance. If decenders were not marked, following kind of alignment error occurs:

Symbols demanding descenders should be marked as shown in the above “Q” symbol. Lines marked with ampersands are not counted when TheDraw aligns the symbols. Font symbols typically needing the descender marks are:

Others symbols may require them also, depending on how your font is designed or implemented.

I posted only a couple weeks ago about the re-design and extension of my TheDraw ANSI/ASCII Fonts Collection. But since then, the collection was expanded significantly again.

The total number of Fonts was boosted from 112 to 141 (That’s an addition of 29 Fonts)! About half of the new additions are fonts that I found in my existing archives scattered here and there. The other half are fonts that I created new myself.

Many of those new fonts that I created for TheDraw are fonts that were created for the ASCII Font Tool “Figlet” using the FIGFonts Standard. Figlet only supports ASCII fonts (no Color) so I created colored versions of some of the fonts all by myself.

Most of the new additions that I created are fonts that are complete or almost complete, which is usually rare for existing TheDraw fonts, meaning that next to standard letters and maybe numbers, also a lot of special and punctuation characters are available for those fonts.

1. Make the original photographs or pictures used by the artists as reference accessible directly within the gallery. Previously those were only available via an older blog post of mine.
2. Allow easier navigation of the gallery. I accomplished that by providing full keyboard control throughout the gallery and by providing the ability to jump to the next piece directly from the detail overlay screen, without the need to go back to the main gallery grid.
3. As mentioned in 2. already. I am using overlays now instead of annoying pop-ups or new browser windows.

The Boss-Key feature is still around, although not via the big red prominent button as before. Now a simple pressing of the letter “b” on your keyboard will do the trick. If you press “b” for a second time, you will be back where you left of before.

Keyboard Shortcuts Available in the Detail Overlay:

Note to the loading of the “Next” or “Previous” piece. If you are currently in the “Photo” or “Side by Side” view, it will automatically load the next or previous piece where there is also an original photograph available. ASCII’s where there is no photo will be skipped. This is not the case, If you are in the Original ASCII view. There it will load the direct next or previous ASCII art.

Keyboard Shortcut available also in the main Gallery Grid:

I already added the Fonts collection for the ANSI Text Editor “TheDraw” back in 2010. Back then I already thought that it would be nice to provide the information for each font, which characters each font supports and to provide a preview to get a good idea how each font looks like. When I launched the collection only a few fonts had this information available and then my site went black for about 2 years and that was that.

Well with the re-launch of my site, many of my collections became under scrutiny, I remodeled the navigation and started using JQuery scripts for state of the art overlay effects and dynamic interactions.

When I was looking at the Fonts collection for TheDraw, I remembered my original intention and ideas and decided to finally realize it reality. As of now, I show for every font in my collection the available characters. It’s shown in the listings and enlarged for better visibility if you hover with the mouse of a set (see screen shot).

While I was at it, I also updated my already existing 2 ANSI and 2 ASCII Fonts as well as 6 fonts by other folks where I added missing characters etc.
