Ample feature content; groundbreaking retractable hardtop with incorporated sunroof; efficient and strong engine; solid interior quality.

Disadvantages

Built for comfort, not speed; tight rearseat.

Introduction

2012 Volkswagen Eos is a stylish and unique all-season cabriolet with an incorporated power panoramic sunroof, which sets it apart from all other retractable hardtop cabriolets in the market. It deserves more consideration, than it gets. It provides the build quality and features of a more expensive luxury model, making it a smart choice for drop-top sun seekers. For 2012, its front fascia more closely resembles the new Jetta, while the interior gains Volkswagen’s next-generation climate and infotainment controls. The DSG automated manual transmission is now standard equipment, while HD radio and keyless ignition and entry are now available options. Brighter as compared to regular or halogen filament bulbs, the optional Bi-Xenon headlamps provide light by creating an arc of electricity inside a bulb filled with xenon gas. It’s so effective that both the low and the high beams can use the same bulb. The Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS) comes standard with Bi-Xenon headlamps and actually turns the headlight up to 15 degrees around corners, helping you to effectively see into the future.

The Volkswagen Eos is basically a 4-seater retractable hardtop coupe cabriolet, launched as a successor to Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet in 2006. It is the company’s first production coupe since the last Corrado in 1995 and the name Eos is derived from Eos, a Greek goddess of dawn. The Eos integrates into its 5-piece folding roof an independently sliding and incorporated glass sunroof, making it the only retractable hardtop of this kind. The roof folds automatically into the trunk in 25 seconds, thus reducing trunk space from 300 to 190 L. Before production, the Eos was showcased as a Concept C vehicle at 2004 Geneva Motor Show, developed and engineered by a team headed by Peter Schreyer, Head of Volkswagen Design in Wolfsburg. Other sources attribute the design of Eos particularly to Slovenian Robert Lesnik.

The White Night edition is a special edition with custom black interior, a black and white color scheme package and custom wheels. It integrates Deep Black Pearlescent colored roof, Candy White colored body, 18-inch Budapest wheels and cherry-red LED taillights. Other features include black door and side trim and Nappa leather seats, Sill panel strips with White Night letters and black steering wheel with light-colored seams, trim strips and radio trim in Candy White. Other features include sports chassis lowered 15 mm, heated front seats and Climatronic climate control system. It had a base MSRP of €33,140 and is offered with all non-V6 models. The Volkswagen Eos was introduced in North America in the 3rd quarter of 2006 and in Europe in the first quarter of 2006. Right hand drive market Japan started sales in October 2006 followed by Australia and New Zealand in 2007. It was showcased in South Africa in the 2nd quarter of 2007.

It is all about the cabriolet. The automatic folding hardtop of 2012 Volkswagen Eos complete with heated rear glass window and sunroof; is the one which disappears into the trunk in just 25 seconds. That magical tractor beam of engineering and design, which that makes you turn your head every time you see one drive by. Just think, if you were driving an Eos, you would have 360 degrees of visibility to spot all other Eos drivers. And then quietly nod and smile. The brake lights, turn signal lights and rear markers are all illuminated using light emitting diodes. LEDs illuminate almost instantly, last significantly longer and use less energy unlike standard light bulbs. Using built-in turn signals on your side mirrors provides one more way to help people around you to see where you are going.

The appearance of 2012 Volkswagen Eos follows the company’s design DNA, which is marked by horizontal, clearly structured lines. Extending between the new headlamps now is a radiator grille protector comprising of 3 shiny black struts, each trimmed with narrow chrome strip. The main headlamps can be ordered in halogen or optional bi xenon format. Within the housings of bi-xenon headlights, 14 LEDs form a daytime running light. The new optional extra for both types of headlamp is a Light Assist main beam assistant. When turned on, it takes over the function of switching between main and dipped beam, automatically adapting this to the traffic situations. Offering enhanced safety as standard on all models, in the mean time, are foglamps which hat now feature incorporated cornering lamps.

The side profile of 2012 Volkswagen Eos benefits from new range of alloy wheels. It is supplied as standard with “Barcelona” 16-inch alloys and type 215 tires. Other 17-inch, 18-inch and 16-inch sets of wheels are available as options. The Eos can be recognized from behind by its redesigned, rear bumper and 2-part LED rear lamps, which, in keeping with the front one, has also been redesigned. A stunning feature of visual and technological structure of 2-part rear lights is a stylized M which integrates LEDs for the brake and tail lights.
The 2012 Volkswagen Eos does much the same thing with its unique built-in sunroof or retractable hardtop convertible roof. It tends to be forgotten amongst the cabriolet ranks in spite of its many advantages. In addition to its pioneering roof, it has a turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine shared with GTI, delivering high fuel economy and punchy power, and DSG automated manual quick-shifting transmission. The impeccable interior is built to a standard which exceeds similarly priced convertible models, and provides abundant standard features which hat help justify its price premium over other rivals like Ford Mustang, Mini Cooper and Chrysler 200. With its front wheel drive layout and size, the Eos claims a middle ground between those cheaper models and luxury drop tops like BMW 3 Series and Audi A5.

Variants, Body Types and Features

The 2012 Volkswagen Eos is a convertible with a retractable hardtop roof that features an incorporated sunroof and offers comfortable seating capacity for five passengers. It is available three trims: Lux, Executive and Komfort.

Standard on base Komfort include foglights, 17-inch alloy wheels, a wind deflector, heated mirrors and windshield washer nozzles, cruise control, keyless entry, “leatherette” premium vinyl upholstery, heated eight-way power seats with 4-way adjustable lumbar support, Bluetooth and a leather wrapped steering wheel and shifter. The standard eight-speaker stereo system features an iPod interface, an auxiliary audio jack, satellite radio, HD radio, a touchscreen interface and a CD player.

Opting for Lux will get you parking sensors, different 17-inch wheels, keyless ignition and entry, power folding mirrors, leather upholstery, automatic wipers, a navigation system (HD radio is deleted) and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The Executive adds 18-inch wheels, a 10-speaker Dynaudio sound system which restores HD radio and a sport-tuned suspension. The Tech package offered on the Executive and Lux includes LED running lights, adaptive bi-xenon headlights, a color trip computer display and headlight washers.

What’s Beneath the Hood of 2012 Volkswagen Eos?

Motivation for the 2012 Volkswagen Eos comes from a turbocharged 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine, which is good for pulsating 200 horsepower with 207 pound feet of torque. The engine is mated to six-speed automated manual transmission called DSG that sends power to the front wheels. In performance testing, it accelerated from 0 to 60 miles per hour in the time range of 7.3 seconds and offered the fuel economy of 30 mpg highway, 22 mpg city and 25 mpg in combined driving.

Safety & Reliability

Standard safety features on 2012 Volkswagen Eos include traction and stability control, antilock disc brakes, front side airbags which extend upward for head protection and pop-up rollover bars. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave VW Eos its top rating of “Good” for both side impact and frontal offset tests.

Special Features and Cockpit Design

The main attraction of 2012 Volkswagen Eos is its 5-piece retractable hardtop that includes an incorporated sunroof section which slides and tilts for times when you don’t want full exposure. As the company knows you will spend a lot of time in your Eos, its seats are all about comfort. They not only have three degrees of warmth for you to enjoy, but are also bolstered for extra cushioning around corners. The driver’s seat has an option of 8-way adjustability, including lumbar support to ensure that your drive is a comfortable one, no matter how long it may be. One touch of available supple Vienna leather seating surfaces and you will never go back.

You would think that regulating temperature would be simple. But at times you are too cold and your passenger’s too warm, which is precisely why the company offers an option of dual climate control. So it also allows you to customize your comfort in nearly every way. The touchscreen stereo you have got AM/FM radio with crystal-clear HD radio technology, SD card reader and an in-dash six-CD changer, all playing tunes through 8 premium speakers. Plus, all of that entertainment, music and more can be easily navigated using intuitive touchscreen interface right in the dash of your Eos.

Driving Impressions

The 2012 Volkswagen Eos is for those who want a relaxed touring cabriolet. The engine in Eos comes with FSI, which precisely directs atomized fuel into the combustion chamber of each cylinder. Well, it drastically increases the efficiency of the engine unlike conventional injection engines. As the Eos comes standard with turbocharged engine, Volkswagen thought you would appreciate the option of a 6-speed DSG automatic transmission with Tiptronic as well.

Pros

Comfortable rear seat; powerful turbocharged engine; crisp handling; top notch interior

Cons

Priced higher unlike many rivals.

Introduction

2012 BMW X3 is a versatile Sports Activity Vehicle, combining all-road capability and utility with sportscar like handling and performance. It is a fine choice for drivers seeking sport sedan dynamics in a crossover sport utility vehicle. For 2013, it remains essentially unchanged save for minor shuffling of optional equipment package features. Mr. Erik Goplen, exterior designer of BMW X3 stated that this goal was to create for The BMW X3 a dramatic vibrancy of shade and light highlighting the definition and form on surface with new bold X-ness. It has been designed and engineered for conveying agility, power and elegance. Both the famous kidney grille and its sleek silhouette provide it a powerful and bold stance. The specially designed taillamps show off its distinctive X3 attributes. And dimensionally, it has increased in size, making it comparable to its predecessor X5.

The BMW X3 is basically a compact crossover sport utility vehicle manufactured and sold since 2003 by the German automobile manufacturer BMW. Based on 3 Series platform, and now in its 2nd generation, the company engineered the X3 in combination with Magna Steyr of Graz, Austria, who designed all X3 models under contract to BMW for the 1st generation. Production of 2nd generation X3 has transferred to the Spartanburg facility of BMW located in South Carolina, US. Following the X5, it was the 2nd model sold by the automaker as a SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle). The company showcased the predecessor to the X3 as a concept vehicle revealed at 2003 Detroit Motor Show. Known as xActivity, the company previewed a Sport Activity Vehicle based on 3 Series platform, without a vestigial roof and windows.

When BMW X3 was introduced in 2003, the company announced that it would be employing a new all-wheel drive system for powering it and the X5, a system sold as xDrive which would mediate transparently to the driver before the driver was aware of unsteadiness. The X3 was a big sales success for the brand and inspired similar offerings from competitors, including the Audi Q5, Acura RDX, Infiniti EX35, Cadillac SRX, Land Rover LR2 and Mercedes Benz GLK-Class. Nonetheless, it was formerly criticized for a minimalist, austere interior which relied heavily on obviously plastic parts, lack of off-road capability because of its passenger car platform and its harsh ride.

The all-new 2012 BMW X3 is a successor to a top seller and will be adding a new dimension to the pleasure of driving a SAV of this segment. More drastically unlike ever, it establishes benchmarks in agility, efficiency and driving dynamics, whilst simultaneously convincing through noticeably increased driving comfort. The BMW X3’s design fuses a dynamically stretched silhouette with the typical BMW X character. With a high degree of variability and a generous amount of space in the cockpit, it’s possible to adapt travel comfort and transportation capacities to suit each personal requirement. All-wheel drive technology, BMW xDrive not only has also been specifically harmonized for ensuring improved driving dynamics, but also optimizes traction. It provides mesmerizing qualities with unbending diversity, fusing both efficiency and driving pleasure with elegance and sportiness and functionality and comfort.

The 2012 BMW X3 was originally launched as a concept to the market: the premium, small SAV Vehicle with unparalleled driving dynamics and all-road capability. The first generation X3 became the best selling vehicle in the company’s lineup both in Europe and in United States. Through its lifecycle, more than 600,000 X3s have been marketed all over world with 150,000 marketed in United States. Consequently, several rivals have entered the now passionately contested class. The new generation X3 builds on the success of the original by enhancing its core competencies while adding new technology for establishing new benchmarks for efficiency, comfort and agility.

At the front, the large headlamp and forward-slanting BMW kidney grille assembly fuse with a powerful looking hood and front apron boasting 6 contour lines sweeping down to meet at kidney grill, providing the 2012 BMW X3 a bold presence. The twin round headlamps fused with round foglamps form triangular light pattern, which is characteristic of BMW Sports Activity Vehicle design. The upper edge of headlamp assembly boasts an emphasizing chrome trim, producing a focused design usual of BMWs. The company’s signature Corona Rings are again illuminated for functioning as daytime running lamps. When equipped with optional Xenon headlamps, the daytime running lamps and Corona Rings are illuminated by bright white LED lights.

The 2012 BMW X3’s profile is also exemplified by a distinctive explanation of typical BMW X design features. The short rear and front overhangs and powerfully flared wheel arches highlight the BMW Sports Activity Vehicle’s robust character. The dynamic appearance of silhouette is emphasized by 3 characteristic lines. Its brand typical upper contour line at door handle level rises steeply at first within the front wheel arch area, then flows gently to the back. 2 additional subtle lines follow this contour line above wheel arches. The back is characterized by horizontal lines, emphasizing its robust character. Expressively modeled surfaces and precise lines produce attractive shadow and light effects. The taillamps that are situated far to the outside have a unique T-shape, which is typical of BMW X3. LED lamp bars produce a unique BMW nighttime design signature. Dimensionally, unlike the previous model, it is 3.36 inches (83mm) longer, a half-inch (12mm) taller and 1.1-inches (28mm) wider, and gets a half-inch (12mm) more ground clearance.

The automaker doesn’t always get it right the first time. Take the X3, for instance. When it was introduced 10 years ago, BMW’s first compact sports utility vehicle was obviously inspired by its respected and established X5 sibling. But albeit it had the company’s trademark athleticism, that original X3 suffered from an overly stiff ride, a high price tag and some subpar interior materials. So the company, looking to make amends, completely revised it in 2011.

Although the 2nd generation 2012 BMW X3 still offers sport sedan like composure in the corners. You will find an option of a Dynamic Handling package which also changes the throttle action, suspension damping, stability control calibration and transmission shift schedule to suit the road conditions or driver’s mood. The cabin inside is as well, with solid construction and high-quality materials. Obviously, being a crossover sport utility vehicle, it also offers the expected traits of respectable cargo capacity and all-wheel drive system.

The 2012 BMW X3 is offered with two powerplants, both of which suffer from the company’s silly naming conventions. The X3 xDrive28i entry-level model offers a fairly spirited drive, whereas the X3 xDrive35i offers a very spirited drive with its 300-horsepower turbocharged, 6-cylinder powerplant. The 8-speed transmission of X3 also deserves special mention for its quick ability for optimizing performance. On the whole, the 2012 X3 is the most significant player in the small luxury crossover sport utility vehicle game. The Mercedes Benz GLK350 feels more solid but is less athletic. The Infiniti EX35 provides similar agility and power for considerably less money. The Audi Q5 offers a smoother ride, whereas the Volvo XC60 is more family friendly. However, those who are in the market looking for one with a performance oriented personality; the 2012 X3 is a great choice.

Variants, Body Types and Features

The 2012 BMW X3 is a compact luxury crossover sports activity vehicle, which provides comfortable seating capacity for five passengers and is available in two trims, which correspond to the powerplant: the xDrive35i and the xDrive28i.

The 28i comes standard with automatic headlights, 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic wipers, foglights, a tilt and telescoping leather wrapped steering wheel, eight-way power front seats, automatic climate control, leatherette premium vinyl upholstery, Bluetooth, cruise control, a 12-speaker audio system with HD radio, a CD player, a USB/iPod interface and an auxiliary audio jack and iDrive electronics interface of BMW.

The 35i is identical but has adaptive xenon headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, wood interior accents and a panoramic sunroof. Options are largely combined into packages, but several of the items are offered separately. The Sport Activity package adds 18-inch (28i) or 19-inch (35i) wheels, unique exterior trim, sport front seats, roof rails, a sport mode equipped transmission with shift paddles (35i) and a sport steering wheel, while the M Sport package is identical but has blacked out exterior trim, chrome exhaust outlets and different wheel styles.

Opting for the Premium package will get you the panoramic sunroof, power-folding/auto-dimming mirrors, front seat power lumbar support, leather upholstery, more storage features such as nets and tie-down hooks and additional lighting. The Premium package for the 35i includes a power tailgate, rear window sunshades and keyless ignition/entry. The Technology package provides front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera with top view, a navigation system with real time traffic and voice commands, BMW Assist emergency communications with enhanced roadside assistance and collision notification and Bluetooth streaming audio.

The Dynamic Handling package includes variable ratio steering, 3 driver selectable drive modes and adaptive suspension dampers. The Convenience package adds the keyless ignition/entry, adaptive xenon headlights, rear window sunshades and a power tailgate, while the Cold Weather package includes heated steering wheel and front seats with a 40/20/40-split back seat. The Cold Weather package II includes headlight washers and heated rear seats. You will also find a Premium sound package which features digital sound processing and 16 speakers.

What’s Beneath the Hood of 2012 BMW X3?

Motivation for the 2012 BMW X3 28i comes from a standard inline six-cylinder 3.0 liter engine, which is good for pulsating 240 horsepower with 221 pound feet of torque. The 35i comes with the same engine but generates 300 horsepower with 300 pound feet of torque. Both are mated to eight-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode. In performance testing, the 28i accelerated from 0 to 60 miles per hour in the time range of 5.6 seconds, while the 35i is 1.5 seconds faster unlike the segment average. The EPA estimated fuel economy is 25 mpg highway, 19 mpg city and 21 mpg in combined driving.

Safety & Reliability

Standard safety features on 2012 BMW X3 include automatic brake drying (useful in rainy weather), antilock disc brakes, front seat side airbags, front airbags, active front seat head restraints, full length side curtain airbags, hill descent control and stability control. In brake testing, the xDrive35i came to a stop in 123 feet from 60 miles per hour, an average distance. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave X3 its highest possible rating of Good in the side, roof and frontal offset strength tests.

Special Features and Cockpit Design

Mr. Ulrich Strohle, interior designer of BMW X3 stated that as a designer, he has always been greatly inspired by natural occurrences, including ice flows. Translated to interior design, a volume concealed underneath a soft, almost organic skin erupts and thus demonstrates a living modernity. Once you step into the 2012 BMW X3, you will immediately notice the voluptuousness. A higher seating position provides you more legroom, headroom and shoulder room ensuring an even more comfortable ride. The instrument panel has been ergonomically designed, so everything is right in your reach and every detail is handcrafted with highest quality materials.

With improved functionality in 2012 BMW X3, it is even easier unlike before to plan the ideal adventure. The trunk features a 12-volt power outlet for all your electrical requirements, while the 40/20/40 back seat folds all the way down increasing your storage space. Restraining hooks are also offered to anchor motorcycles and other valuables beneath the 2nd loading bay floor. The optional variable sports steering system offers you razor sharp precision at high and low speeds. All this makes it the company’s most versatile X3 yet. Experience a new level of comfort in the generously spacious interior of X3. A uniquely ergonomic design and wide track have improved its voluptuousness and with exceptional leg, elbow and head room, all 5 occupants will be supremely comfortable, no matter how long the ride.

Head-Up Display projects the navigation or current speed instructions discretely in driver’s field of vision, so you always see what is significant without taking your eyes off the road. Important warnings and the Dynamic Cruise Control’s selected speed are always visible on this display. The image is projected on the front windshield and is always readable, even when lighting isn’t optimal. Bluetooth audio streaming, a technology offered from BMW ConnectedDrive wirelessly plays music saved on your MP3 player or Bluetooth capable smartphone. It does it even while you are making a phone call. This feature supports all Bluetooth capable devices which are AVRCP and A2DP capable. An optional 8.8-inch Control Display provides both brilliant colors and high resolution and a generous monitor size. So, whether you use the control display for listening to music or navigation, be assured that the quality is class-leading.

Driving Impressions

With its weight distributed nearly equally over its rear and front axles, the 2012 BMW X3 handles with adeptness which you expect from this German marque. Every BMW engine follows the tenets of EfficientDynamics, reliable torque and power with outstanding fuel economy. The X3 xDrive 35i’s powerplant harnesses TwinPower Turbo technology in fusion with Valvetronic and direct fuel injection. Output is a breathtaking 300-hp with 300 lb-ft of pavement-pushing torque. But the same sophisticated technology which allows such impressive pulse raising power and revs from this groundbreaking engine also renders it one of the most fuel-efficient in its segment.

New for the 2012 BMW X3 is the company’s mighty TwinPower Turbo in X3 xDrive28i. Smooth running and Light weight, it integrates the company’s award winning High Precision Direct Injection, Double-VANOS and Valvetronic technologies. Its dynamic performance is equaled by spectacular fuel efficiency, taking you further on every gallon of gas than its six-cylinder predecessor.

BMW Performance Control produces a more dynamic driving experience by controlling each wheel individually. Most vehicles have wheels which are on an axle and connected by a differential, a special gear which adjusts for difference in length. This means the outer wheels get greater drive power, while the inner wheels gain less power. The sporty 2012 BMW X3 dominates every road, irrespective of its situation. The company’s intelligent four-wheel drive system, xDrive is able to recognize difficult road surfaces via sensors in DSC chassis control system and reacts in just a fraction of a second. xDrive has the capability to flexibly distribute power between the rear and front axle. This means the wheels with greater traction will always get an optimal level of power and this allows for exceptional traction and stability with whatever the road may bring you.

Impressive feature content; agile handling; ground-breaking body style actually seat four passengers; smooth rotary engine; comfortable ride.

Cons

Small trunk opening; poor fuel economy; meager acceleration and low end power.

Introduction

2011 Mazda RX-8 is an aggressively styled, true four-seater sportscar that offers high revving, lightweight rotary engine and near-perfect 50-50 weight distribution. Providing an adrenaline surge with 4-passenger capacity, it has some practical advantages over the usual sport coupe, but is let down by the lack of torque and sport utility vehicle like thirst for fuel. The RX-8 courageously rejects convention. Like a breath of fresh air, it has brought original thinking into the world of sports coupes. Combining aerodynamic, sleek styling with legendary four-door versatility, this is a wonderfully thought-out sportscar, designed and engineered fully without compromise. Crouched close to the asphalt, every sensuous curve hints at the power underneath. Flared wheel arches frame the elegant, long bonnet and stretch over the purposeful five-spoke 18-inch alloys, situated at the extreme corners of the vehicle for supreme balance and stability. Air outlets behind front wheels strengthen its predatory look, whereas the dynamic shape of rotor is reflected in the bonnet power bulge and echoed by rear foglamp, flanked by the powerplant’s dual exhaust pipes. From every angle, the 2011 RX-8 signals its sportscar attributes.

The Mazda RX-8 is basically a sportscar designed and engineered by Mazda Motor Corporation. It was introduced in the year 2001 at the NAIAS (North American International Auto Show and is a successor to RX-7. Like previous in the lineup, the RX-8 is propelled by a Wankel engine. It started North American sales in 2004 an the company announced on 23rd August, 2011 that RX-8 will be discontinued from production citing the 2011 model as the last line of production. It was removed from European market in 2010 after it failed to meet the emissions norms.

The Mazda RX-8 was designed and developed as a rear-wheel drive, 4-seater front mid-engine, 3-door coupe and has a low second moment of area which is gained by mounting the fuel tank ahead of rear axle and the powerplant behind the front axle and 50:50 front-rear weight distribution. The rear wheels feature independent multilink suspension, while the front gets classic independent double wishbone. Weight is trimmed via use of materials like plastic and aluminium for various body panels. The rest of the body is steel, except the plastic rear and front bumpers. The manual transmission model gets a carbon fiber composite driveshaft for reducing rotational mass connected to the powertrain. It was equipped with a Torsen limited slip differential that sent power to the rear wheels for enhanced handling. The Mazda RX-8 is considered its successor as the company’s rotary engine sportscar. Its clever engineering and layout with usual Mazda suspension tuning have endowed it with excellent driving dynamics that have garnered numerous awards and much praise. It has proven famous in Japan amongst car aficionados as well as aftermarket professional tuners and equipment manufacturing companies.

In the year 2009, the engineers of Mazda enhanced the body rigidity of RX-8 via addition of structural reinforcements by enhancing local rigidity of front suspension tower areas and providing a trapezoidal strut tower bar. The upgraded Mazda RX-8 was around 90 pounds lighter as compared to 2003–2008 models. In addition, the rear suspension geometry had been redesigned for superior handling by lowering NVH levels, enhancing overall performance and enhancing driveshaft rigidity. The upgraded RX-8 featured a different gearing ratio, which was lowered to 4.777 from 4.444 for enhanced off-the-line performance. These performance enhancements gave the upgraded Mazda RX-8 increased performance and acceleration, along with greater responsiveness to the accelerator pedal. The company claimed that the upgraded RX-8 was a drastically quicker as compared to 2003–2008 model car because of its lowered gearing, enhanced suspension and lower weight.

The 2011 Mazda RX-8’s freestyle, pillar-less door system offers outstandingly easy access to the voluptuous cockpit. The rear and front doors open from the centre for you and 3 passengers for experiencing the fun. It sophisticated body architecture integrates MAIDAS, the company’s Advanced Impact Distribution and Absorption System for improving passenger and driver safety. Ingenious freestyle doors combine four-door flexibility with two-door styling, without sacrificing on safety norms. Extensive strengthening of rear doors creates an incorporated B-pillar when the doors are completely closed, drastically improving body side strength. For continuing the coupe styling, the front doors close only after securing rear doors, while the rear door handles are hidden. 4-wheel ventilated disc brakes, improved by Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), offer outstanding feel and make it easy to judge how much power to apply to the pedal to safely scrub off a little speed before entering a corner, or bring the vehicle to a standstill safely and quickly. Additionally, a Traction Control System (TCS) and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) offer reassuring, intelligent handling by subtly assisting at the limits of grip without diminishing your driving pleasure.

Dating back to Cosmo Sport revealed in the year 1967, all sportscars ever designed and engineered by Mazda has had the same basic mission for providing car enthusiasts with a car that is exciting to look at, easy to own and fun to drive. The 2011 Mazda RX-8 exemplifies that mission, conveying the distinctive and unique Mazda marque DNA to the fullest. For enhancing the highly successful Mazda RX-8, the engineers of the company focused on innovation in 3 main areas for the new Mazda RX-8: performance, packaging and styling. The improvements made to its interior, exterior, performance and packaging takes it to a complete new level of driving and visual excitement.

The distinctive freestyle 4-door design of 2011 Mazda RX-8 is proof that a true sportscar doesn’t need to sacrifice convenience or space for performance. The sophisticated design of rear hinged rear doors offers a large door opening, enabling full-sized passengers to easily exit and enter the vehicle. This design is also beneficial while securing a small child or a baby in the rearseat. With enough trunk space for weekend’s worth of luggage and a voluptuous rearseat area offering ample passenger room for four passengers, this sportscar proves its versatility. The exterior styling of RX-8 presents a genuine sportscar form, whereas the cockpit offers an intelligently designed and comfortable cabin. Minor improvements were made for the new RX-8 for providing a functional and simple interior design, which supports driving pleasure. The center IP shape was re-engineered for providing a feeling of dynamic movement, redesigned rear and front seats and a new steering wheel are also added and a variable red-zone was added to the tachometer which will rise as the powertrain comes to operating temperature.

In the automotive marketplace, the 2011 Mazda RX-8 is an appealing oddball, a four-seater, lightweight coupe with suicide doors, distinctive engine design, which squeezes maximum power from minimum displacement and spectacular balance. It is still the only production vehicle, propelled by a rotary engine that uses two triangular shaped “rotors”, which spin smoothly in one direction, as opposed to pistons that move up and down. This design enables its motor to spool up to 9,000 rpm with ease. The engine’s lack of low-end torque can be frustrating in traffic or in town, but its eagerness to scream with jet-engine like soundtrack and buttery power delivery, makes driving the 2011 RX-8 a real kick for aficionados.

For all its efficiency making commendable power from a small mill, the 2011 Mazda RX-8 is a 3000-pound coupe that gets about the same mileage like the 4,300-pound large 7-passenger CX-9 crossover sport utility vehicle of Mazda. Here our enthusiasm for recommending the RX-8 dampens. Given its athletic ability, we could live with rotary’s soft low-end performance if it got decent mileage. Newer rivals like the Ford Mustang, Nissan 370Z and Chevrolet Camaro offer superior fuel economy or performance for a similar price tag. However considering its comparable ease of access and its practical 2+2 layout, the RX-8 is still a smart alternative choice in the sport coupe category.

Variants, Body Types and Feature

The 2011 Mazda RX-8 is a 4-seater coupe with two rear hinged access doors. It is available in 3 different trims, which include Grand Touring, R3 and Sport.

Standard features and equipments on base Sport include air conditioning, 18-inch wheels and performance tires, a leather wrapped steering wheel and shifter, cruise control, a six-speaker stereo with an auxiliary audio jack and a CD player and full power accessories. Models equipped with manual transmission get rear lip spoiler and a limited slip differential.

Opting for Grand Touring trim level will get you automatic xenon headlights, limited slip differential and spoiler, heated side mirrors, foglights, a sunroof, rain sensing wipers, an eight-way power driver seat with memory, an auto dimming rearview mirror, leather upholstery, heated front seats, keyless ignition and entry, automatic climate control, a Bose nine-speaker premium surround sound stereo system with a six-CD changer and satellite radio and Bluetooth.

The top-of-the-line R3 trim, available only with the 6-speed manual transmission, has a handful of the Grand Touring features; these include Bluetooth, xenon headlights, the Bose audio system and keyless ignition/entry, along side 19-inch wheels, a more aggressively tuned suspension, Recaro front sport seats and a rear wing spoiler. The lone option is a touchscreen navigation system with voice commands for the Grand Touring.

What’s Beneath the Hood of the 2011 Mazda RX-8?

Motivation for the 2011 Mazda RX-8 comes from a rotary 1.3 liter engine, which is good for pulsating 212 horsepower via six-speed automatic gearbox and 232 horsepower through six-speed manual transmission with meager 152 pound feet of torque. In performance testing, it accelerated from 0 to 60 miles per hour in the time range of 7 seconds. The estimated fuel economy for RX-8 is 22 mpg highway, 16 mpg city and 18 mpg in combined driving.

Safety & Reliability

Standard safety features on 2011 Mazda RX-8 include front side airbags, front side curtain airbags and antilock brakes. Stability control isn’t available on Sport trim but is standard on R3 and Grand Touring. In government testing, it got 4-star rating for driver protection in frontal impacts and 5 stars for front passenger.

Special Features and Cockpit Design

For a dedicated sportscar, the 2011 Mazda RX-8 is unexpectedly spacious with abundant space for three adult passengers and the driver. No matter where you sit, you are sure to enjoy the ride. The low-slung front sports seats have deep, supportive side bolsters and provide an adjustable driving position. At the back, sculpted front seatbacks free up even more space. All basic controls are well within reach for intuitive operation. The interior styling is flawless down to the smallest detail. Choose leather and the driver’s seat will be power adjustable with heated seats for your front passenger and you. Throughout the interior, cool technical aluminium detailing marks this out as a true sportscar, whereas the rotary design cues continue with front seatback apertures and a unique rotor shaped gear knob. With over 290 litres of luggage space along with the convenience of ski-hatch between the backseats, it will easily accommodate weekend cases or two golf bags.

Settle into the driver’s seat, grip the leather wrapped tilt adjustable steering column and you are in complete control. Instrumentation is accurately where it should be, clearly visible within 3 deeply cowled dials with a tachometer boldly taking centre stage. The driver focused instrument panel is an ideal demonstration of its attributes. Back-lit dials offer a sporty reminder of the type of vehicle you are in control of, whilst subtle detailing and piano black trim extend that feel to one of convenience and luxury. The Mazda RX-8 is not just a sportscar designed and engineered to look good, however it gains greatness too with every gauge, every dial and every control being intuitively positioned, designed to help augment that already exhilarating driving experience.

Driving Impressions

Albeit the 2011 Mazda RX-8 looks like a race tuned sportscar, its road demeanor is actually pretty docile. As compared to the traditional piston engine, the Mazda RX-8’s rotary engine has no pistons, valves or cylinders. Rather, 2 triangular shaped rotors spin within their oval housings around a common output shaft. As combustion occurs, each rotor instantly turns, and revs increase rapidly with virtually no vibration. And with only 3 main moving components, unlike a minimum of 40 in a piston engine, power delivery is incredibly refined and smooth. With this level of ingenuity, it is no wonder the RX-8 has won the International Engine of the Year award two years in a row.

Smaller and lighter unlike piston powerplants of comparable power, the rear wheel drive rotary engine of 2011 Mazda RX-8 sits lower and further back in the frame, with the fuel tank ahead of the rear axle. Together with the long wheelbase, the result is a low centre of gravity, near-perfect 50:50 weight distribution and an impressive power-to-weight ratio for outstanding stability and agility. With a free-revving award winning rotary engine at its heart, it makes for a truly exhilarating drive. Breathtaking driving dynamics offer a perfect combination of stability and power. From driver’s seat, it means total confidence that the Mazda RX-8 will respond as precisely as you expect, delivering its power in a smooth and progressive flow.

After a stage of silenzio stampa, the interwebs’ popular BMW insider Scott27 returns with more rumors about BMW Group’s future models. Scott27 provides detailed descriptions around the forthcoming 2 Series Cabriolet and Coupe, a revelation: 2 Series Gran Coupe or a Gran Coupe Compact and the somewhat expected and highly rumored M2. The Germany’s latest Autobild magazine is at present running a feature on BMW and its 17 new vehicles due from the firm over the course of the next 2-3 years.

The 2er will be the company’s entry Coupe equipped with Rear Wheel Drive system. With sophisticated plans for switching the complete 1er to front wheel drive in the next gen; the 2er is launched for keeping the sportier compact rear wheel drive concept in balance.

The 1er’s front hasn’t been universally accepted by a minority; however it has been successful with Sportline being a famous choice. It will be progressing the look of 1er; however give its own unique look that will be less visual unlike the hatchback.

The replacement of 1M Coupe is experiencing intense discussion. The entry M is compact, great to drive and powerful but with a chance to push for progress without compromising its attributes and core strengths.

Another idea is GranCoupe Compact (GCC) that’s in an infant stage of discussion so far. This model will be available in either 4 or 5-door body styles. BMW Design has been evaluating extremely modern elegant like the Citroen DS5 and Hyundai Veloster for a varied perception.

The engine is mated to 7-speed M DCT transmission with variable M differential and accelerates from 0 to 60 miles per hour in the time range of 4.6 seconds.

This concept vehicle adds an additional dose of luxury, visual and power aggression to Audi’s smallest sport utility vehicle. Motivation for the RS Q3 comes from the same five-cylinder 2.5 liter turbocharged powerplant like the one found on RS3 and TT RS hatchback, albeit in the Q3 has 20 more horsepower, at 355bhp. The engine is mated to a dual clutch seven-speed transmission and accelerates from 0 to 60 miles per hour in the time range of 5.2 seconds with the top speed of 165 mph.

Externally, a deep grille is filled with black gloss honeycomb insert and surrounded by aluminium trim. The lower section is decorated with Quattro emblem, whereas the bottom lip and outer sections are constructed from CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic). For combining with Ordos Blue paint, the trim around sills, bumpers and wheelarches is finished with blue clearcoat. At the back, a pair two elliptical tailpipes protrudes from diffuser – a proverbial RS touch.

The blue theme continues inside with trim panels constructed from special type of CFRP woven with blue luminescent fibers. In recognition of the vehicle’s Beijing launch, the rev counter uses Chinese symbols rather than standard numbers. The company won’t confirm the RS Q3 will be built, but is highly likely.

The diminutive sports utility vehicle of Mini packs large attitude and John Cooper Works Countryman has made its way stateside. All Mini models come equipped with front wheel drive, a part of their charm, unique driving character and heritage. The base Countryman S comes with various technological enhancements, starting with the suspension, which is lowered by 10 mm, with stiffer anti-roll bars and little stiffer spring rates that measure 17 mm and 22 mm rear and front. The standard wheel size measures 17 inches with larger wheels offered as option.

The single twin-scroll 1.6 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine was originally found on S model and comes with direct injection and standard Valvetronic variable valve lift. The company has taken things a step further by tweaking the mechanicals and remapping the ECU for producing a substantial boost in power. The 1.6 liter JCW engine found in Cooper John Cooper Works generates 208 horsepower, while the output of Countryman JCW jumps to 211 horsepower. Torque has remained the same from its predecessor’s engine – 207 pound feet, generating 221 pound feet between 2,100 and 5,200 rpm.

In 2013, BMW will be revealing its latest generation of their most popular M model to the date: the 2014 BMW M3. While numerous design cues are expected and known, the largest mystery comes from beneath the hood. According to the report from InsideLine brings back the idea of V6 engine making its way into new BMW M3. As per the magazine, a 3.0 liter highly advanced twin turbocharged V6 engine is being designed and engineered. Formerly, BMWBLOG heard from different sources that both an inline-six and V6 were being tested, and they went back and forth with what a final choice might be.

The new V6 engine is the first to feature the company’s 2 twin-scroll turbochargers within vee-angle, mirroring BMW’s V8 4.4 liter design. This unique to BMW approach reduces the length of inlet tract unlike with standard turbo-vee setup, helping to minimizing heat buildup after air passes via intercooler and sharpen throttle response. The 60-degree V6 engine will also provide the best balance, but a 90° angle is required to fit the 2 turbos. Outputs of the new engine are believed to be around 405 pound feet of torque and 429 horsepower.

Highlights

The exclusivity only a Rolls Royce can offer; swift acceleration; highly customizable; luxuriously comfortable and silent interior.

Drawbacks

Merely adequate trunk space; prohibitive cost.

Introduction

2011 Rolls Royce Ghost is an all new exotic sedan build in England and is more driver focused and little smaller as compared to flagship Phantom. Those who are in the market looking for a vehicle with luxury and presence of a Rolls Royce Phantom but with more acquisition cost and manageable size should be pleased with 2011 Ghost. The Rolls Royce Ghost gains a full “Bespoke Commission” treatment for the model year, which means you can tailor the entry-level Rolls to nearly the same degree like the fancier Phantom. The entertainment and Bluetooth systems have also been updated as well. The principle of providing simplicity out of complexity runs throughout Ghost Extended wheelbase and Ghost. Everything is engineered, crafted and designed to be so invitingly approachable, so simple, it encourages you to regard either vehicle as appropriate for any occasion. Inside it’ is like being cocooned in your own convivial private sanctuary, which leaves you unruffled and relaxed after the longest journey.

The Rolls Royce Ghost is basically a luxury sedan developed, designed and engineered by Rolls Royce Motor Cars. The Ghost nameplate named in honor of Silver Ghost, the first vehicle developed and designed in the year 1906, was announced at Auto Shanghai show in April 2009. During development, it was called “RR04.” Designed as a more measured, more realistic smaller car unlike Phantom, aiming for lower price segment for Rolls Royce models, the retail price is approximately $255,000. The production model was officially revealed at 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show.

The first concept car dubbed the 200EX was officially revealed at March 2009 Geneva Auto Show, indicating the styling direction of production model Ghost. As compared to the aluminum bodied Phantom, it was constructed from steel that has a higher tensile strength and can therefore be made sleeker. The chassis used multi-link aluminium front and rear axles and intelligent 4-corner air suspension system. Systems including four corner air springs, Variable Damping Control and Active Roll Stabilization operate as one, imperceptibly to the passengers and driver for providing the best possible comfort for passengers. Connected to main computer, the suspension is able to detect the movement of single rear passenger from one side of the seat to the other, and compensates accordingly.

The 2011 Rolls Royce Ghost is an essence of Rolls-Royce in its purest, simplest form. Advanced engineering fused with host of hidden technology produces a comfortable yet dynamic drive. The designers of Ghost were inspired by the Don Carlos de Salamanca’s photograph at 1913 Spanish Grand Prix. His calm expression after winning the grueling 190-mile race in his Rolls Royce Silver Ghost suggested the effortless and simple driving experience they recreated for 21st Century Ghost. The classic 2:1 proportions of wheel to body height are a key to Rolls Royce DNA. You can select from 3 different wheel options with 2 different finishes, each with their own special character. Each features unique self-righting wheel centres, which always display the Rolls-Royce monogram the right way up.

When you look closely at the paintwork of Rolls Royce, you will see a perfect reflection of yourself staring back at you. There are 16 colors to choose from or they can mix any color you want from a swatch – might be from a favorite tie or lipstick – their Bespoke programme provides 44,000 hues. Further customization includes hand-painted five-meter coachlines and two-tone finishes. The classic Rolls Royce proportions are all correct and present: the ideal 2:1 ratio of the height of wheels to the height of the body; the short overhang at front, the long overhang at rear and the long wheelbase and bonnet. Ghost is more like a well-customized jacket than a formal suit. Its powerful proportions and presence leave you in no doubt that it is cut from the same cloth as the rest of the marque.

The 2011 Rolls Royce Ghost Extended Wheelbase is 6.7 inches longer as compared to standard Ghost; their engineers have gone to great lengths to ensure it offers same outstanding driving dynamics. The electronically controlled dampers, Active Roll Stabilization and airsprings take multiple readings from sensors around the vehicle and continually adjust the suspension accordingly. This ensures they stay level at all times, even while traveling flat out along uneven road surfaces. Not only does this make for a more dynamic and less tiring ride for the driver, it also improves ride comfort for the passengers. More importantly, it helps create the magic carpet-like ride Rolls-Royce is famous for.

With Bespoke Programme, you can complement the modern interior and exterior styling of 2011 Rolls Royce Ghost with plenty of personal touches and embellishments which highlight the extraordinary skills of craftspeople at Goodwood. For the exterior, you can choose from extended palette of striking paint colors. Each one is painted by hand using a special brush made from squirrel and ox hair, and takes around 3 hours to apply. Their scrupulous approach to detail also extends inside the car. The additional range of veneers can be improved with stainless steel pinstripes. Or you could have the Rolls Royce monogram or Spirit of Ecstasy logo inlaid by hand into the veneered door cappings. Not only can you choose from a wider range of leather combinations and colors to furnish and trim the interior, it can also be finished with seat piping and contrast stitching. Or you can create your own color scheme using a palette of different leather colors, which can be applied in any combination you desire. You can also have the Rolls-Royce monogram or your initials embroidered into the headrests.

The flowing lines of 2011 Rolls Royce Ghost are dominated by its majestic ‘Yacht Line’ styling. Large, uninterrupted surfaces flow between finely sculpted horizontal lines, which provide definition. Mutually, the low-cut roof and upward-sweeping sill line create a powerful profile, nearly as though the interior has been pushed toward the rear. Powerful flanks and shoulders draw in sharply as they flow from rear wings to taillamps, while touches like optional chromed exhausts hint at its more dynamic nature. While integrating classic Rolls Royce design cues – the long bonnet, elevated prow, sharply raked A-pillar, elegant tail and short front overhang Rolls Royce Ghost exudes an informal aura. Modern touches include the Xenon headlamps which frame the latest evolution of Rolls Royce grille and self-righting wheel centres.

The cheaper Rolls Royce. The Baby Rolls Royce. The entry-level Rolls Royce. All of those adjectives are factually correct with regard to 2011 Rolls Royce Ghost. It can feel Germanic in a way it is balanced for both handling and ride. It is a muscle car quick, meticulously engineered and more enjoyable to drive as compared to its larger brother. Its interior is beautifully appointed and filled with latest gizmos and gadgets. As cheap as Ghost is compared to Phantom, it is hard to make the case, which it is really that, much superior unlike Audi A8L, Mercedes Benz S600 and Jaguar XJL Supersport.

Variants, Body Types and Features

The 2011 Rolls-Royce Ghost is a five-seater four-door sedan offered in a single trim level. Standard features include an active air suspension, 19-inch wheels, front and rear parking sensors, a sunroof, auto dimming mirrors, keyless ignition/entry, automatic xenon headlights, automatic wipers, power closing rear “coach” doors, adaptive cruise control, a pair of umbrellas stored within the front doors, leather upholstery and trim, 10-way power and massaging front seats, heated front and rear seats, Bluetooth, four-zone automatic climate control, a navigation system and a 16-speaker sound system with satellite radio, a CD/DVD player, an auxiliary audio jack, an iPod/USB audio interface and digital music storage.

Options are seemingly limited by the shopper’s finances and imagination, as one might choose such items as twin rear DVD monitors (with a six-disc changer), outboard multi-adjustment rear seats with further optional massaging and/or ventilation and drop-down veneer picnic tables. You can also get a cooler between the seats. The Driver’s Assistance Systems package includes automatic high beams, lane-departure warning, a night-vision camera and a head-up display. Albeit a dozen exterior colors, along with a choice of five wood and eight leather trims, will be available as standard fare, those seeking more exclusivity will be able to tailor their Ghost any way they see fit through Rolls Royce’s “Bespoke Commission” program.

What’s Beneath the Hood of 2011 Rolls Royce Ghost?

Motivation for the 2011 Rolls Royce Ghost comes from a twin turbocharged 6.6 liter V12 engine, which is good for pulsating 563 horsepower with 575 pound feet of torque. The engine is mated to eight-speed automatic transmission with rear wheel drive system. In performance testing, it accelerated from 0 to 60 miles per hour in the time range of 5 seconds. The rated fuel economy is 20 mpg highway, 13 mpg city and 15 mpg in combined driving.

Safety & Reliability

Standard safety features on 2011 Rolls Royce Ghost include antilock brakes, stability and traction control, front seat side airbags, side curtain airbags and active front head restraints. The Driver’s Assistance Systems package adds automatic high beams, a lane-departure warning system, a night-vision camera and a head-up display.

Special Features and Cockpit Design

Once inside the rear passenger compartment, the 2011 Rolls Royce Ghost is immediately apparent where every centimeter of additional length has been added. The additional legroom invites you to stretch out, while the abundant extra space provides you with more room to entertain, work or just relax and appreciate the exquisite craftsmanship in every detail. It also enables even more possibilities for customization, so you can create a vehicle, which is as unique as you are. Beautiful wood in its most natural form adds a simple, yet stunning finishing touch to the cabin. To give the impression of a flawless flow of grain from the dashboard to passenger compartment, the company only uses wood from the same tree for each car.

Not only does this ensure a consistent coloration, over time it will acquire the same patina. If you prefer a more modern feel to your interior, you can choose one of straight grained veneers like Malabar or Dark Wenge and Piano Black; whereas if you favor a more conventional look you can opt for Elm Cluster or Walnut Burr. The enhanced range of hardwood veneers, including Oak Burr, Black Stained Ash and Mahogany are offered through the Ghost Bespoke Programme. At the press of a button, the rear coach doors close silently and effortlessly behind you once you are inside. The informal lounge seating configuration creates a convivial and serene environment, while its slight curve adds a feeling of intimacy as it allows you to turn towards the person sitting next to you.
