But first, why do we think these stencil designs are perfect for beginners and DIY home decorators in a hurry?

All it takes is one paint color and a stencil brush or roller to transform a wall! Use neutral, tone-on-tone colors for a soft, textural look. Stencil with high contrast paint colors for a more dramatic statement wall.
 

Simple stencil patterns with wide open spaces between the design details can be stenciled so quickly and with very little paint.

Less pattern means your stencil painting goes much faster than a more detailed design. In most cases the stenciling can be quickly done with a stencil brush in the isolated spaces.

Simple patterns are more stable. Less design areas cut away means they are easy to control and lay flat with minimal taping required.

The openness of the designs also allows for a little more “fudging” of the spacing of the overall pattern to get it to fit your space.

Moroccan Scallops Furniture Stencil-Susan Hale @sdm23669

Susan couldn’t decide on a tile backsplash she liked and ended up stenciling her own custom tile backsplash during her home remodel.

She read up on stenciling on our website and ordered our Stencil Cremes and Stencil Brushes and began experimenting with colors. As she lives near the beach she started with Pearl Oyster and Teal Blue paints and went from there with Peacock Green and Patina Green-applying the stenciling over a sea foam green color.

When finished she sealed it with a high heat clear coating spray used for car engines.

Her stencil tips:

-The hardest parts to stencil are the edges and corners, so save them for last and cut the stencils as needed.

-Have some of your background color handy for touchups!

-When applying multiple layers of paint through the stencil, allow it to dry completely before moving on to the next stencil repeat.

Thicket Leaves Wall Stencil-Lynne Foster

Lynne transformed her soulless basement bedroom in the look of a Parisian boudoir with the help of our Thicket Leaves stencil and our metallic Stencil Creme Paints.

Her paint and stencil technique:

“I used a dark gray-blue background paint, covering the walls in a rather sloppy, swirly pattern that gave it the feel of plaster, especially under the stencil. Then I used mostly Smoked Oyster and Metallic Teal for some accents. Even though the space is dark, the luminescence of the paint gives it a glow.”

Large Endless Vine Stencil-Allison Lewis

Allison was looking for a lower cost alternative to wallpaper for her bathroom renovation. Fortunately she found our Royal Design Studio Stencil videos on YouTube. After watching a few she decided to try wall stenciling herself using our Pearl Oyster Stencil Creme paint over a base color of Sherwin Williams Delft!

Her stencil insights after trying DIY wall stenciling? “Take your time and accept that to do this well, it will take patience and attention to detail. But so worth it in the end! It was much easier to keep the stencil alighted than I expected, and even easier in corners. It turned out perfectly! I didn’t have any stencil bleeding because I used the Stencil Brush and YouTube stenciling tips”

Spanish Tile Stencils Set-Clare Mester

Clare was looking to “cozy up” her front porch and found our Spanish Tile Stencils Set to do the job. For her stenciling technique she cut up an old construction sponge and used it with a rolling motion through the stencils to apply the paint colors.

She said, “I am obsessed! I loved the stencil variety in the set and how much creativity was involved in deciding to build the overall pattern.”

She used Sherwin Williams Spiced Cider and Deer Valley paints. She stenciled some tiles in just one color and in other sponged the colors over each other, blending them to make a rustic look.

Her porch stenciling tips:

Wear knee pads to make the stencil process more comfortable. Consider the stenciling like an “area rug” to help create a strong sense of place-and also it’s less work than stenciling the whole porch!

Floral Fireworks Stencil-Summer Lewis

Summer wanted to find a fun way to breathe new life into her cozy art and coffee shop-a 1932 gem of a former home.

She said, “When customers walk in the ohhhh and ahhhh, and comment much they love the “wallpaper”. They are amazed when they find out the magic comes from using a wall stencil.”

When visitors walk in they are greeted with a charming stenciled focal wall painted in Sherwin Williams Inky Blue.

Her encouraging stencil tip: “Although there are flaws due to the learning curve involved, even after reading comments and watching stencil tutorials to prepare, it is incredibly enjoyable when the work comes together!”

Harlequin Furniture Stencil Medium-Wendy Fincher-Hughes @wfincherhughes

After owning her “new construction” home for 7 years, Wendy was waiting to discover her creative vision to bring the neutral paint color to life in her entry. The simple idea of using flat and satin sheened paint in the same color because a great start to get her creativity flowing.

She said, “I’m so inspired now and LOVE how this little area turned out. I love how the subtlety of the satin and flat paint contrast makes this wall shine. It’s my first stencil project but not my last!”

Half Moon Modern Stencil-Heather Nykoda

A love for Mid Century modern style inspired this gorgeous porch makeover.

Having recently delivered her second child, Heather was looking for a project she could do slowly during her kid’s naps. She used outdoor patio paint for both the base and the rich, orange stencil color.

She says, “This process was very relaxing and helped me to feel completely present. The stencil is high quality and I can’t wait to use it all around the house. I wanted a 2-tone color and I feel like I accomplished that by doing 2 coats randomly so that the color is uneven and slightly faded. I’m extremely happy with it and so is my husband.”

Crocus Bloom Art Nouveau Stencil-Colleen Hollatz

Here is a creative stencil update for a growing daughter using our Crocus Bloom Art Nouveau Stencil. Colleen wanted the look of wallpaper without the big price tag-so of course stenciling the walls was the perfect answer!

She used Pittsburg Revolution paint in green and cream with a touch of mauve color at the base of each crocus to tie in the colors of the room and add a special detail. Ending the pattern ¾ of the way up the wall adds yet another custom detail and is such a great idea.

Colleen says, “I love the top of the garden look of not going the whole way to the ceiling. It shows off the crocuses more. We love it all!”

Daisy Chain Border Stencil-Julia McGuigan

Julia and her family are in their very first home and we so tired of beige walls after years of renting. They now want to paint every room in their house!

Our Daisy Chain Border Stencil, painted in the graceful arch, is the perfect accent and segway between two colorful rooms. She used our Bright Gold Stencil Cream paint and blue for the stenciling.

She says, “I’m SO pleased with the final result. I love how affordable this project was. It was very therapeutic to stencil It is addicting!” Also, “ Have fun and don’t be afraid to make mistakes because it inevitably will happen. Embrace the imperfections!”

Flower Field Wall Stencil-Brenda Harley

Brenda was need to add a dose of charm to her powder room and our Cottage inspired Field Flowers stencil worked like a charm.

She used our Smoked Oyster Stencil Crème paint and stencil brushes over a base of Ben Moore Swiss Coffee in a matte finish.

She says, “This was an excellent stencil for a room with lots of small spaces because the flowers could be cut apart easily. I used the intact stencil sheet as much as possible and then cut the stencil at the end to fit flowers easily into the smaller spaces.”

Half Moon Modern Stencil-Cameron Joseph

A messy plumbing leak in a powder room led to this amazing transformation with our Half Moon wall stencil. 

Cameron says, “ I got the vintage sink of my dreams and needed a wall pattern to make it pop! I’m not great at wallpaper (and didn’t want to spend a fortune on a tiny powder room) so I chose to stencil instead. I am in LOVE with the results! It’s a colorful, memorable space with so much personality. My vintage sink finally gets to shine.”

Stencil Tip: Use the stencil to trace the pattern and hand paint it in a tight space like this. This is what Cameron and it worked out beautifully!

Lisabetta Damask Wall Stencil-Lee Amo

Lee wanted a dramatic effect for her dining room wall panels in a 1928 home. She decided to skip the wallpaper and personalize it with her own creative look and colors.

She started by stencil embossing the stencil with joint compound to get a raised pattern. She did extensive color layering for this finish-using 5 different shades of teal and blue over the gold painted background to get the look she wanted with staggered colors and no obvious pattern.

Lee says, “the Lisabetta stencil is fabulous! Super dramatic design and the stencil held up really well. I absolutely love the end result!”

Maison Floral Allover Stencil-Diane Frijia

Diane’s front porch was a plain, concrete slab that she felt detracted from the beauty of her home. She used Behr Porch and Patio paint for the base and stenciling over a coat of Kilz Adhesion Primer.

She says, “It’s a great transformation! It gives our entryway a POP and is so welcoming. Give it a try to brighten up your concrete.”

Isadora Damask Wall Stencil-Sterling Tyner

Looking for a change in a powder room, Sterling chose our elegant Isadora Damask stencil to really make a statement. The basecoat paint is Slate Charcoal by Sherwin Williams and the stenciling is easily done with our popular Antique Gold Royal Stencil Crème paint.

Swedish Floral Allover Stencil by Brenda Harley

Brenda wanted to create a cozy, vintage style in the bathroom of her 1925-era Colonial style house. She used our Pro Stencil Tool Kit to paint the wall with SW Swiss Coffee and stenciled with BM Dusty Miller.

She says, “The aesthetic is just what I wanted. It looks like wallpaper but was so much less expensive! Stenciling quires a bit of elbow grease, but it is also pretty meditative. I genuinely enjoy the process. I’m so pleased with the results!”

Starlight Allover Wall Stencil by April Vegas

April’s inspiration for her wall stencil project came from an antique vanity bench what has teal blue fabric with little metallic starbursts on it.

She says, “I started looking for ideas online to reproduce the idea I had and ran across Royal Design Studio Stencils website. I read the reviews and found the stencil "Starlight Allover Wall Stencil" and decided to try it! I went to Home Depot and found samples to match closely to the vinyl. I chose a metallic paint for the starbursts to make them stand out from the flat wall without being a contrasting color. I was super happy with the results! The stencil was easy to use. It just took a bit of time at the start to mark the center of the wall and make a plumb line (vertical line) so that everything would be straight. I'm so glad I chose Royal Design Studio Stencils to do this project! It turned out perfect!”

Her color choices were Glidden Eggshell Crystal Lake and PPG Metallic Tones Abundant Blue.

Her stencil tips: Double check that you didn't miss anything on the wall before you put your stencil away! I realized I missed a few spots after I cleaned up and had to get the paint and stencil back out.

 

Ophelia Art Nouveau Stencil by Cat Murphy

Cat wanted to create a bold patterned wall on her kitchen entry area: a space to be excited to sit and stay awhile. She loves Art Nouveau style and vintage wallpaper prints so became obsessed when she came across our Ophelia Art Nouveau wall pattern.

She used BM Interior Eggshell in Rosepine and stenciled the design with Glidden’s Witchcraft, New Clay, and Chili Pepper.

She says, “I feel excited and proud of myself every time I come home now! A little reminder to myself that I can do anything with a little hard work.” We love that!!

Her stencil tip: Do color swatch samples first to make sure all the colors work well together in the design. Don’t rush it.

Sintra Large Patio Stencil by Jody Rozanes

Jody wanted to add some elegance to her New/Old 1906 Georgian Revival home. She says, “In March my husband and I purchased an old home (built in 1906,) in a small Midwest town. Although I liked the painted black porch, I felt it needed something more to make it more welcoming. I was searching for a stencil for another room and discovered Royal Design Studio.

The moment I saw the Sintra Tile stencil, I knew this was what my porch needed. I had to wait until after the move-in date, unpacking boxes and good weather to finally start the project. I could not be happier with how it turned out! 

I used a roller brush with an extension handle to avoid so much bending down. I would also recommend some knee pads for large floor/porch/patio areas! In my opinion, I achieved my goal of bringing back the charm and elegance of my old home’s porch and created a space that is welcoming for neighbors and friends to come sit and enjoy a glass of lemonade. Granada Border Stencil by Dina Brown

Dina wanted to give her dining room ceiling look like a vintage Spanish hand-painted look. She says, “I had so much fun with this project, from conceptualization to execution. Royal Stencil brushes are excellent, and their quality made it easy to stencil.”

Her stencil tips: Do a lot of tests to make sure the colors work well together. Planning and patience are key!

Asahi Wall Stencil by Mylieka Johnson

Mylieka didn’t want to commit to the permanence of tile or wallpaper for her bathroom remodel and found that stencils were an amazing option at a fraction of the price. She used paints from the SW Duration line, which is thicker and works well for stenciling.

She says, “This was my first time stenciling and I loved the result. The project has some mistakes but I know my next attempt will be much better.” Note: The stenciling looks GREAT!

Anatolia Tile Stencil by Margaret Hession

Margaret wanted to give her front porch an upgrade. After playing around she settled on an Iron Ore base color with Accessible Beige Porch Paint for the stenciling.

Her stencil tips: Add perimeter or painted border lines around the stenciling to set it off. Watch out for “grout alleys” and be sure not to apply too much paint there.

 

Brick Wall Stencil by Diane Frijia

Diane’s son has always wanted to have a brick wall in his home. When he moved into a new home with a built-in bar he had the perfect wall to transform and Diane was delighted to get to use our Brick Wall Stencil.

Wanting to create an aged brick look, she created different shades of the main brick color to make it more authentic and added touches of sponged texture for more “ageing”.

She says, “The wall totally looks like textured bricks and my son in delighted!”

Chloe Floral Trellis Wall Stencil by Christy Scott

Christy says, “It’s cheaper than wallpaper but looks just like wallpaper. I’m so proud of the result. It looks SOOOOOO so good!”

Jen @accentwalljen is a professional decorative artist who transforms her clients walls with stencils.

For this customer who was replacing wallpaper, she painted the walls in a flat black and used Metallic Black paint for the stenciling. It gives an elegant tone-on-tone paint finish that shimmers in the light.

Summer Field Cottage Floral Wall Stencil by Jen Hierholzer

@accentwalljen also used one of our wall stencils to update this boring entry. The stencil pattern is painted with Black Pearl by Modern Masters over a base of SW Alabaster.

Delicate Floral Stencil by Monika Dawideit

Monika had recently remodeled her kitchen and wanted a new look to go with it. She used a variety of our Royal Stencil Crème paints in Smoked Oyster, Pearl Oyster and Antique Silver to get a custom metallic color.

She says, “Although I found it a bit challenging stenciling around my circle windows, it was so much fun to see the results as I stenciled around the room. It’s not only fun, but the results are beautiful. Just do it!

Petra Tile Stencil by Peggy Altfater

Peggy was looking to transform her unattractive patio concrete slab with a creative stencil project and Mediterranean vibe.

She used the Behr line of concrete painting products:
1 coat of Behr Concrete & Masonry Bonding Primer followed by 2 coats of Behr Porch & Patio Floor Paint in the color Fresh Cement. For the stenciling she had them color match a cobalt blue color in the same paint.

Her stencil tips: Prepping is so important! I power washed the slab, filled in cracks and had the patience to allow everything to dry thoroughly between steps. I am a senior woman and planned accordingly

She says, “I love how this compliments my surrounding décor and space. It brings me a smile every time I’m in this area. The results are magnificent!

Annapakshi Damask Wall Stencil by Samantha Burdman

As a newly single mom with 3 kids, Samatha’s priority was getting them well adapted into a new house so she got them settled in upstairs bedrooms and took a “basement-like” room downstairs for herself. She says, “After months of hating it, I decided to lean into a bohemian boudoir vide to elevate it and this gorgeous stencil fit the bill beautifully!

She used our Antique Gold Stencil Crème Paint over a base of Ben Moore Frozen in Time.

Her stencil tips: Take your time! Paint the middle stencil, walk away to let it dry and then continue radiating our from the center. The stenciling will speed up as you go along.

Large Endless Vine Wall Stencil by Laurie Keenan

Laurie had not done a large wall stencil project since the 1980’s but she needed a change in her bedroom, was hoping for a dark dramatic focal wall, and didn’t want the expense of wallpaper.

She says, “I am totally smitten with the beauty of this!”

Her stencil tip: Try stenciling on paper first. If you mess up your wall, just repaint and start again.

Macrame Knots Wall Stencil by Cheryl Bernier

Cheryl had recently added bead board paneling to her powder room and wanted a nautical look pattern to go with it. She used Behr paint in Coney Island and Spun Wool for the wall stencil treatment.

She says, “This was my first try at using a wall stencil. It took numerous trials as I was using too much paint on my stencil brushes and it was seeping underneath. I finally got to using the proper amount of paint.  Practice makes perfect!”

Marie found this FREE dresser and though it would make a great “art therapy” stencil project. She painted it first with Tuscan Orange Fusion Mineral Paint and then stenciled the pattern with metallic gold and outlined it with a black Sharpie.

She says, “I had a lot of fun with this project. Art therapy entails not judging your work. What makes art is how you handle your mistakes. I had so much fun I even decorated the insides of the drawers.”

Meadowland Wall Stencil by Elizabeth Knight

Elizabeth loves making small, overlooked spaces in her home look special and she had a small hallway that was dark AND boring.

She used our Meadowland Wall Stencil to brighten it up using white, green and golden yellow colors over a basecoat of Sherwin Williams Gray Harbor.

She says, “We love the finished look! It looks like high quality wallpaper but it’s so much cheaper, more fun, and we could customize the colors” That, my friends, is the real beauty of stenciling it yourself!

Her Stencil Tip: Go slow and clean the stencil often to keep sharp, clean lines.

Nadia Block Print Wall Stencil by Sasha Merica

Sasha and her husband were looking to update their teenage daughter’s shared bedroom with a more mature look. They considered wallpaper but were worried about how it would hold up on their plaster walls of their old farmhouse. Wall stenciling was the perfect solution!

They used Behr Beach Grass Flower for the background and Behr Red Clover Stem and Pittsburgh English Ivy for the wall stenciling. So cute!

She says, “We are beyond amazed at how easy the stencil was to use. Nearly everyone who sees it thinks it IS wallpaper. We are so pleased with the results and can’t wait to stencil more rooms”. And we can’t wait to see!

Moroccan Starry Night Wall Stencil by Leslie Leach

Leslie had moved into a new home and was looking for a fun way to liven up the walls. She chose our Moroccan Stars Wall Stencil, but wanted to customize how she used it to create a totally unique look.

After experimenting by creating some painted samples she landed on a version in metallic silver, gold, and bronze  that leaves out some of the design elements and opens the pattern up more. We love the look and the creativity she used to make this stencil design her own.

She says, “It was a super fun project!”

Rose Buddies Wall Stencil by Elizabeth LeMoine

Elizabeth wanted to bring more charm to her historic home and our sweet little Rose Buddies stencil was perfect for this small powder room, stenciled in white over a base coat of Sherwin Williams’ color Rosemary.

After painting and stenciling over the bright blue walls she said, “I love it! It is so cozy and sweet. This stencil design fits SO much better with our historic home.”

She found that this stencil pattern was very forgiving in the tricky, awkward corners as it wasn’t necessary to follow the repeat of the pattern exactly.

Ophelia Art Nouveau Wall Stencil by Bridget Sullivan

Bridget wasn’t originally sure what she wanted to do in her entryway makeover but knew for sure she had to remove the damaged plaid wallpaper. When she found a partially finished stencil design underneath it sparked her idea to look into wall stenciling. She was inspired by one of the colorways we show for our Ophelia Art Nouveau wall stencil and found a another design, our Petite Mughal Border Stencil, to accent it.

She says, “Using bold colors and a gold metallic paint accent makes the small space look like a work of art! I’ve already gotten so many compliments on it and love that this is the first thing I see when I walk into the house. I had so much fun on this project and am already dreaming up another stencil design idea for our side entrance.”

Her stencil tip: Paint the wall color on a “test piece” first to help plan your colors and practice stenciling.

Small Endless Vine Wall Stencil by Gina Mantel

Gina is a homeschooling Mom and raising a family on a single income doesn’t leave a large budget for décor. But she found she can still prioritize design by stencil painting instead of wallpaper.

She said, “My vision was to have a half-stenciled wall for our small space to make it feel bigger and more expensive. The Small Endless Vine Wall Stencil was perfect for this room, with its smaller details and classic pattern.”

She used Cotton Knit by Behr for the bask and Bonsai Trunk for the stenciled vines and painted trim. She also added her own flower bud detail with a custom wine color.

Her stencil tip: Make sure get a temporary spray adhesive for the stencil to use over and over again without it sticking long term to the walls.

Ashley’s daughter wanted wallpaper in her room redesign but it was out of the question as the walls are currently paneled. Stenciling the walls offered the perfect opportunity to create a custom wallpaper look without a messy renovation project-and a HUGE cost savings!

Janet describes herself as a decorating “risk taker” and rose to the challenge of stenciling a ceiling with our detailed Isadora Damask Stencil using our Pearl Oyster Stencil Creme.

She says, “Was it hard using a stencil on my ceiling for the very first time? Yes. Was it doable? Absolutely! Am I so proud? YES, and everyone comments and love it-even the men! It actually went faster than expected.”

Megan had already stenciled 4 rooms in her own historic home when her sister asked if she could help stencil one in her 1890 home. She says, “Although my sister has painted many rooms, we both felt something was missing. The stenciling really made the foyer much warmer and inviting. With this being my 5^th room to stencil I feel like a pro! I find that buying two stencils is the way to go. I cut the second one up so I can stencil the tricky areas more easily.”

Sysun is restoring her 1940’s home and was looking for a wall stencil pattern and finish that would be authentic to the home and period. She used our Antique Gold Stencil Crème over SW Rain Washed to achieve this beautiful new look for a bedroom.

Palace Trellis Wall Stencil-Christien Creed

Christien used a combination of gold and bronze stencil paint colors on this stunning ceiling stencil project and says, “The gravity makes it easier to stencil a ceiling then a wall. The paint goes down in your brush and is never too thick on your stencil. A ceiling is a big job but the result is fantastic!”

Flourish Damask Wall Stencil-Janet Sappington 

Janet had an ugly brown accent wall in the North facing condo that needed to be brightened and lightened but still remain neutral. She used Behr paint colors in Sunken Pool, Sturdy Brown and a soft white and accented it with our Smoked Oyster Stencil Crème Paint.

She says, “ I love the results. I’ve posted it on FB and showed all my family, neighbors, and co-workers. Everyone loves it and is very impressed with the design,  color, patience, and persistence I had to do it.” We are too!

Her Stencil Tips: “Don’t bite off more than you can chew. I’m 58 and the hardest part was climbing up and down the ladder over and over. Otherwise it was fun, rewarding and fabulous. Take your time. There is no rush and the results are spectacular!”

Upscaled Ribbon Trellis Wall Stencil-Michelle Handy

One home renovation project usually leads to another and when Michelle finished her kitchen remodel she continued on to a living and dining room refresh using our Upsceled Ribbon Trellis stencil and Antique Gold Stencil Creme Paint over a background of SW Privileged Green.

She says, “The work turned out much harder than planned due to working on uneven and not-straight walls. But my efforts and perseverance were SO WORTH IT! Everything turned out stunning and better than hoped.”

Flourish Damask Stencil-Bonnie Smith 

Bonnie couldn’t find a wallpaper that she likes so she created her own custom look with our Flourish Damask wall stencil buy taking inspiration from the color palette of the rug in the room.

She says, “I love the result! It was a challenge going around wall sconces, curved windows and the angled wall but worth the extra time and effort. Listen to a good book while you work and do it!”

Her stencil tips: Take your time. The wall was large and waiting for the paint to dry was hard because I was so excited with look but didn’t want to smudge the paint. I also washed the stencil regularly to keep the stencil from getting heavy.

Faith wanted to finish the bathroom in honor of her late husband and enjoyed the learning process for using our Paladeo Tile Stencil in 3 ways: an embossed stencil finish, on artwork and accents in the bathroom.

Navajo Dreams Stencil-Frank Morrison

Frank wanted to add a Native American design to an antique piano that was no longer functional and created a beautiful new custom piece with a variety of stencils.

He says, “Very pleased with the ease of using these strong stencils. I had no problems working with them and this was my VERY FIRST attempt at using yours, or any stencils.”

Frank’s stencil tips: I used quite a bit of small pieces of the blue painter's masking tape to mask off adjoining areas while painting each color. Once my stencil was in place, I proceeded to do all colors, switching the masking tape around to various areas. These particular paints dry fairly quickly. After doing each pattern area, I washed the paint off the stencil using a soft nail brush to avoid buildup, then proceeded to the next area that I wanted to stencil. This system worked great for me but may not work for everyone. This works so good I had minimal touch up to do.

Baraka Tile Stencil by Leah Enriquez

Leah was looking for a way to make her pool deck beautiful in an affordable way. She found it with our Baraka Tile Stencil!

She says, “Every time I look at my finished project it brings me so much joy and a sense of accomplishment. It took a long time but I enjoyed the quiet concentration and break from the kids when I'd get the chance to work on it. People are "floored" when they see it and can’t believe it's just paint.”

Leah’s pro stencil tip: For longer projects you can't finish in one sitting I suggest putting some paint into smaller containers with lids so you can easily work on your project without as much set up. That made it possible for this busy mom of 3 to work on it during nap times.

Dazey Tile Stencil by Michelle Vandivier

Michelle inherited a cute, existing playhouse with her new home but it definitely needed some TLC to bring it to life. As she has been stenciling a long time, she was happy to find a unique NEW project to stencil. She used Sherwin Williams exterior paints in Aluetian Blue, Romance Pink and Pure white.

Michelle says, “The floor seriously makes the playhouse! It is charming and I get so many compliments on it. I love Royal Design Studio stencils because they provide so many unique designs, with something to suit anything and challenge my creativity. Just go for it! I’ve never regretted stenciling something!”

Parlor Lace Stencil by Sarah Berry

Sarah wanted to brighten up her dark and dreary basement landing and used the Parlor Lace stencil on the floor to add some color and pattern.

She says, “I love the results! The stencil vastly improved the space, making it a cheerful and more colorful space to walk through.”

Her stencil tip: To keep the registration clean, I taped over the shapes along the edge of the stencil to keep paint from covering not just the shape punched to line it up, but the surrounding space too. When I went to lay the stencil in a new spot, I lifted the tape to check my spacing. This gave me extra certainty the stencil lined up perfectly.

San Miguel Allover Floral Tile Stencil by Meghan Fairless

Meghan is slowly renovating her historic home in Detroit. As the house has a lot of character and potential she has found it exciting to pour more love into each project.

She says, “My mom helped me stencil our breakfast nook. We were both ecstatic with how it turned out! We love it! My husband couldn’t believe how good it looked either! We used Sherwin Williams paints, including Alabaster, Tricorn Black, Succulent, and Pavestone.”

Her stencil advice: Patience is key! It is a lot of work - ours took three days, but the pay off is worth it! It makes such a statement.

Gina’s stencil tip: Do the biggest sections first that make the biggest impact so it’ll help you keep going and staying excited about the changes!

Pamela had a cement front porch that was looking old, stained, and tired. It needed help and stenciling was a perfect solution. She used a special concrete paint fortified with Epoxy for wear and fade resistance.

She says, “I felt somewhat daunted by the project, but once I started it was a lot of fun and so satisfying to see the beautiful results!”

Kristi wanted to make her boring entrance pop. She color-matched her existing house colors to conform to homeowners association requirements and used Valspar textured concrete paint to prevent the walkway from being too slippery.

She says, “This  tile stencil transforms my plain concrete porch to a beautiful entry way. It directs you eye to the door which is tucked back and somewhat hidden. From inside the house, it looks lovely when you open the door.”

She says, “It turned out better than I could have imagined! My dining room faces a window with a view of tropical trees. I wanted to match the tropical green color and add the stencil with your Metallic Gold Stencil Paint. For something this dramatic and fun, I just had to go with an Art Deco stencil. French Floral Damask Large Wall Stencil-Elyse Camozzo @ecamozzo

This amazing wall stencil project started with the need to replace some old, damaged 80’s wallpaper and accommodate some fixture issues. Elyse used a wide range of our Metallic Stencil Creme Paints to create the look of custom wallpaper. She purposely used different color combinations in the main design elements throughout to keep the “hand painted” look.

Elyse’s stencil tip: Buy 2 sets of stencils for a project like this so you can cut up one set to more easily stencil in the corners and ceiling line.

Starlight Allover Wall Stencil-Michelle Lapinski

Michelle wanted a home office that was both functional and whimsical. After multiple attempts with different stencils and through trial and error she finally found the stencil pattern she was looking for-our popular Starlight Stencil. She used a KERIFI Silver Liquid Chrome Mirror Marker for the stencil.

She said, “I had bought a few others that were faulty, or the paint bled or the design didn’t look great. I was ready to give up until I bought this stencil. I’m so glad I found this wonderful company!”

Modern Souk Moroccan Tile-Carl Hayes @carlhayes0825

Carl lives in Las Vegas, where the sun is blazing and cinderblock walls are the backyard norm. Practical, but uninspiring! He decided to use paint and a wall stencil to give his backyard some life and color!

He used a neutral paint and Palm Green color for the stencil to give his backyard a resort-style feel. A UF resistant matt clear coat was applied afterward to resist fading.

He said, “The cracks and grout lines were a little frustrating at time, but I just took my time and didn’t sweat the imperfections. Loved how our wall turned out!”

Brighton Manor Damask Wall Stencil-Kimberly Kinser

Kimberly said, “My dining room was nice, but the room need a little punch-up. I searched everywhere, looked at many wallpapers, and decided to stencil the Brighton Manor with the Royal Stencil Creme in Smoked Oyster. This way I could customize and save some money. A win/win!”

“I love it, my family loves it, and I’m quite pleased with the results! I got the luxe, country manor look I wanted without spending thousands of dollars on wallpaper.”

Kimberly’s stencil tips: This oversized stencil was a little like wallpapering in that I had to be mindful of pattern layout and match and also staying level. I began in the middle of the arched window because that’s the focal point and went out in both directions from there.

Windsor Damask Wall Stencil-Loraine Cernak

When Loraine and her husband pulled off a wall-size bulletin board in their 115 year old Victorian House they found it had been covering up a VERY large crack. Rather than cover it up, they decided to “make it work” by doing a distressed wall stenciling finish with our Windsor Damask and a mixture of sponged-on leftover paint colors they had.

Loraine said, “My husband distressed the wall in layers working a little each day for about. Week. When the painting was finished, he used the stencil over the paint filling it in with a Prismacolor White colored pencil. Lastly, we hung some empty old antique frames to show off the pretty stencil work. The wall is now the centerpiece of the room!”

Asahi Wall Stencil-Angie Markham

Angie wanted to add a personal painted touch to her new home, so she enlisted the help of her creative aunt to stencil this wall with our popular Asahi wall painting stencil.

They stenciled the pattern with watered-down acrylic paint from the craft store and Royal Design Studio Stencil Brushes that her aunt has had for years!

Sage stencil advice: “Less is more! Make sure your brush is not overloaded with paint. Dab off excess on a paper towel prior to applying to the wall.”

Deco Wave Wall Stencil-Aiyana Vaber

Aiyana wanted a hand painted wall mural in her home but found the $1500 price quote too much for her budget-so she decided she could paint something equally cool on her wall-herself!

She reports there was definitely a learning curve but is so happy with final result.

Firefly Bonnie Christine Wall Stencil-Paula Berg

Paula first tried a painted stripe effect in this bedroom and hated it-so she remembered how much she loved the feature wall she stenciled in her master bathroom and decided to stencil the wall instead.

She wanted something subtle and found the Firefly wall stencil a perfect solution. She said, “One thing that made a huge difference is to every now and then color one of the dots a brighter color. I used a deep pink and burnt orange paint for the wall stenciling here and there”.

The wall stenciling, done with Stencil Brush, went very quickly. It actually took longer to paint over the stripes that were there before!

Firenze Panel Furniture Stencil-Rebecca Spencer

After a home renovation made this closet door visible from the main living room, Rebecca decided she need to “fancy it up” and decided on the Firenze Furniture Stencil to do the job. She used acrylic paint in various colors to paint the base and dabbed some here and there to create a distressed background for the panel stencil.

Almeria Allover Tile Stencil-Anna Baird

After buying a new home a year ago in New Zealand, Anna is gradually injecting character in to all the spaces-inside and out. To transform the front entrance, she chose a graphic tile stencil pattern and bold black and white color scheme. She also convinced her visiting mother to help with the project.

As the concrete was very rough, Anna turned to YouTube videos to teach herself how to use an airbrush and the results are amazing! Now she is looking for other areas to apply her stenciling magic. We can’t wait to see!

Herringbone Brick Patio Stencil-Julie Judd

Julie was looking to update her concrete patio and found the perfect solution with our popular Herringbone Brick stencil. She was kind enough to share her products and process if you want to try it yourself!

“I used Sherwin Williams Porch and Floor Paint. Base color SW9174 Moth Wing. Stencil color SW6053 Reddened Earth. I used 2 coats of the base color and then used a foam foller for the brick stencil. I found that if I thinned the paint a little for stencil I could use less paint and it gave me some light and dark areas for depth. I then went back and fixed any areas where it bled under. It turned out amazing!”

Marhaba Moroccan Tile-Rachelle Tenace @materialworldwithrachelle

Rachelle wanted to create a fantasy space to showcase her line of global textile pillows and fabrics in her boutique space. She chose the 21” Marhaba Moroccan Tile-a large bold pattern and stenciled it in black and Chantilly White from Benjamin Moore.

Her stencil tips: Get a long handled roller brush for painting the floor. After priming the floor with Styx primer she painted and stenciled it and then sealed it with 2 coats of water-based polyurethane. She says, “It’s time consuming, but worth it. Everyone who sees it flips out! It is SO gorgeous-what a transformation!”

Large Estevan Tile-Amber Rinehart @amberjnet

Amber lives in an old farmhouse with two Great Danes and didn’t want to invest too much money into a floor renovation. She was feeling create and loved our stencil options!

As her hardwood floors had been previously painted, she used a floor sander to remove the old paint and repainted with Lowes paint in Otter. To make the two stencil colors she combined the Otter color in varying amounts with the wall paint color, Practical Beige. She used our Set of 3 Best Stencil Brushes for the stenciling. Then sealed it all with Minwax Poly for floors in a satin sheen.

Her stencil tips: Stencil the larger areas first (for fewer touchups) and clean your stencil brushes after a couple hours of work if doing a large project.

She said, “The stenciled floor turned out better than I even expected!”. Indeed.

Chatsworth Tile Stencil-Lisa Knoblauch

Lisa wanted to give her porch some character and stenciling a porch is the easiest way to do just that! She used Tricorn Black and White Concrete and Masonry paint for the porch stencil project.

Megan was bothered by the state of her front porch since moving in and want to give it an update with some curb appeal. Porch stenciling to the rescue!

She stenciled the porch with a classic black and white color scheme to match her house, using Concrete and Masonry paint and applied a waterproof sealer on top for more protection.

She said, “I love the stencil we chose! It turned out great and I get so many compliments.”

Anatolia Tile Stencil-Sarah Chude

Sarah says “My front porch was a miserable stained 50-year old piece of bare concrete that was dangerously slippery when wet”. Now, “My porch is transformed. It’s such a beautiful place to be that I now need to work on the garden to make it pretty enough to match!”

Sarah used Valspar Concrete Primer and Valspar Concrete Paint in light and dark gray and finished if off with two coats of a protective topcoat in a satin sheen. She recommend power washing and acid etching an old concrete surface before painting and stenciling.

Our talented customer Lauren Samu transformed the blah, beige ceramic tile floor in her laundry room with bright and bold paint color scheme and our popular Mandala Fusion tile stencil.  She was kind enough to document her fail-safe process for stenciling tile floors so we can share it and you can do it too!

Stencil and Floor Painting Supplies:

• Small Mandala Fusion Tile Stencil
• Assorted Stencil Brushes (one for each color)
• Kilz Kitchen and Bath Interior Primer
• Behr Cabinet, Door and Trim Enamel in Shadow Mountain
• Americana Acrylic Paints: Peacock Teal, Lagoon, Deep Burgundy, Honey Brown, Cinnamon Stick, Natural Buff
• Diamond Varathane Water-Based Polyurethane (Semi-Gloss)
• Bleach, Medium-Grit Sandpaper

Good surface preparation is the key to stenciled tile success. Clean the floor well with diluted bleach, sand lightly, and clean again. Prime the clean floor with Kilz Primer for Kitchen and Bath. This is a bonding primer that is formulated to stick to glossy surfaces-like ceramic tiles!

Base coat the floor with 2 coats of Shadow Mountain. Note: Lauren prefers to use Cabinet and Trim enamel because it's designed for maximum durability. The finish will be hard and shiny so it may be a bit more challenging for stenciling. You can choose to substitute a good quality latex paint, such as Behr Dynasty in a flat finish.

After your floor has dried for at least a day, gather your stencil supplies. Lauren chose to use a lot of different colors of paint to create a truly custom stencil finish, but you can use the paint colors of your choice. The Mandala Fusion Tile Stencil looks good in so many different colorways-even just using ONE color of paint.

Note that Lauren stenciled the entire floor with full repeats first and then cut the stencil at the end to fit in and stencil the spaces around the edges easily. If you don't plan to use your stencil for other future projects, this is the easiest way to finish off the floor. Seal the stenciled floor surface with 2 coats of water-based polyurethane. You can choose a satin or semi-gloss finish depending on your preference.

You may still hate doing laundry, but you will surely love your floor after stenciling!

Flourish Wall Stencil - @moncada88

When it comes to stenciling, there is not brainer than to use royal design.  I was able to completed my second project thanks to their product and the many options they have.  I brought back our outdated guess room back to life and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome and best part it’s super easy to use their stencil.

Starburst Tile Stencil - @aczordan

Allysa used our Starburst Tile Stencil to add a whimsical pattern to this enclosed porch. Painting over the old grey painted floorboards with a peach color and doing a two-tone stencil pattern makes this pattern pup approved!

Lisabetta Damask Wall Stencil - Phyllis Webb

It has been a couple years since my daughter and I did this transformation on the small half bath in her then, new Townhome.  She made a couple more changes that elevated the look even more, changing out the faucet to black, and more gorgeous warm wooden, black and platinum colored accessories, a series of five old black/white equestrian prints hung in a single row on the wall to the right!   The room is a little gem!   We began by painting the walls a soft black (SW Iron Ore), then stenciled the walls in a platinum silver (I think it was Martha Stewart craft paint.   Can’t remember for sure).   The cabinets were an Annie Sloan soft black with some distressing.   A few other painted accessories to match.   Including the costs of the stencil, paint, brushes, new light fixtures AND new faucet, I think the entire project was under $200.00.   This was a first stenciling project for both of us, and will not be the last!   I wouldn’t suggest this large a pattern to someone else as a beginner, I have a little advantage that I am an artist.   There are six corners and the space was tight and somewhat challenging… often, I would freehand to complete an area, ie, behind the toilet, and the tight space beside the mirror.
BUT… I think it was a success!
We should have taken more pictures of the totally finished room… she and her new husband have recently moved and she has rented this home to a trusted friend.

Loose Weave Wall Stencil - Ellen Backman

For quite a while I have been wanting to redo my room and bring in something fresh and new. When I saw your Loose Weave Stencil it was just the thing I needed to get started. In particular, I loved the idea photo on your website that used this stencil on a canvas with a yellow border on the top. I ran with that idea and here is the final result. Chunky Cable Knit Stencil - Sunayna Johnson

I spruced up an old concrete patio with some paint and stenciling. I really wanted an outdoor rug-like look… but decided to paint a rug instead of dealing with the hassles of an outdoor rug. I used the Chunky Cable Knit stencil to achieve the outdoor rug look!
