Music Library Move completed – Music Library now closed

Music Library collections and services have been transferred to Founder’s Library, where they are available immediately. The Music Library is now closed.

Please note: There is no access at present to the Music Department PC suite via the Music Library. Other PC suites are available in Bedford and Founder’s Libraries and in the Computer Centre.

Sibelius software: Access to Sibelius is available on 8 PCs in PC lab 3 in the Computer Centre. The Computer Centre can be accessed 24 hour a day with a College card.

Reminder – Upcoming Music Library Move

The Music collection will be moved to Founder’s Library between Monday 16 August and Friday 20 August. During the move individual items will be inaccessible for a few days.

Please borrow any Music items you require by Friday 13 August. Student borrowing allocations have been increased to 40 items so they can borrow required items and ensure they are unaffected by the move. Academic staff can ask at the helpdesks if they require additional items.

From Monday 23 August Music books and scores will be accessible in the First Floor East reading room in Founder’s Library. This is the same reading room which has traditionally housed the Collected Edition Music scores.

Emerald Management 120

The library now has access to the Emerald Management 120 e-journals package. Emerald is one of the leading publishers of management research with an international perspective. The package consists of 120 top rated journals on a range of business and management topics, including access to key journals such as the International Journal of Operations and Production Management.

Please note that the Music Library will permanently close on Friday 20th August. From Monday 23rd August, the music collection will be available from Founder's Library for the corresponding opening hours for that library.

Finalists: your RefWorks account!

If you are a RefWorks user leaving Royal Holloway this year, you will be glad to know that we have arranged for you to have continuing use of RefWorks as a Royal Holloway alumnus. However, you cannot just continue to use your Royal Holloway account: you need to create a new Alumnus account, and transfer your current RefWorks database to it.

An instruction sheet showing exactly how to do this is available from the Library helpdesks, just ask. If you will not be coming to the Library again now, you can email to request an electronic copy. For any other enquiries about this, please contact Adrian Machiraju in the Library.

Night owls and early birds welcome at Bedford Library: 24/7 opening extended

We have extended Bedford Library 24/7 opening until 21st May because we know you like the convenience of using Bedford Library 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

To get the most out of your visit, may we remind you of our tips and guidelines, which are particularly useful if you're planning to come late at night, or early in the morning.

Finally, please note, so as not to be disappointed, that Bedford Library will close at 17:00 on 21st May when 24/7 opening comes to an end.

Space to Study

All RHUL libraries will be open on Thursday 1 April and Tuesday 6 April. Opening hours are:

Bedford and Founder’s Libraries: 08:30 - 01:00
Music Library: 09:00-13:00 & 14:00-17:00

All RHUL libraries will be closed from Good Friday 2 April to Easter Monday 5 April (inclusive).

Senate House Library Easter opening:
Thursday 1 April and Tuesday 6 April: Saturday opening hours apply
Good Friday 2 April to Easter Monday 5 April: Closed.

2009 exam papers available online

The 2009 exam papers are now available online. In order to access these papers, go to the Exam papers page on the library web site.

If you click on your department you will be taken through to a list of all exam papers for your department. In order to find a specific paper, use the search box on the left hand side and type in the relevant course code or course title.

Bedford Library 24/7 opening

The Archives Service has put together a small exhibition on College Fashion to celebrate Runnymede Literary Festival. In keeping with the theme of R:FEST, the display includes photographs and extracts from the College archives relating to fashionable sport, social and everyday wear from the 1890s to the 1940s! The exhibition is displayed in the foyer of Bedford Library Monday 15 March – Sunday 21 March.

The library has set up a Springer eBook Trial. Until 31 May 2010 you have unlimited online access to tens of thousands of Springer eBooks published between 2005 and 2010 at springerlink.com.

Bookable student study rooms available in the Bedford and Founder’s Libraries

In response to user demand the Bedford and Founder’s Libraries offer bookable student study rooms for group and individual study.

In Bedford Library (Level 3) and Founder’s Library (room 104) student study rooms can seat up to 8 people. An interactive Smart Board is also available in these rooms for student use. The student study room (1-01) on Level 1 of the Bedford Library caters for small groups or individual study.

Two additional student study rooms have recently been made available in Bedford Library (on Level 2). Rooms 2-05 and 2-06 can accommodate groups of up to 6 and 8 students respectively.

All rooms are bookable via the help desks in the libraries.

Extended opening hours

From Monday 1st March to Friday 14th May, Bedford and Founder's Libraries will have extended opening hours:

Monday - Thursday 08:30-01:00 (Self service only from 23:00-01:00)
Friday 08:30-20:00
Saturday and Sunday 08:30-21:00 (Self service only from 16.00-21.00)

Additionally, from Monday 12th April to Friday 14th May, the Bedford Library will be open 24/7.

All library users entering the libraries after 22:00 will need to show their College ID cards to staff. The Bedford Library entrance will also have swipe-card access from 22:00 onwards.

Exam papers

Extended opening hours

In response to many requests, the Library will be putting in place extended opening hours later this term and next term both for Bedford and Founder's libraries.

We are working out the practicalities but hope to announce details of extra hours for weekends and evenings starting in first week of March. We are currently recruiting for additional staff to provide these hours.

The library goes live with the latest version of Aleph

The library has successfully completed a major upgrade of its library management system, Aleph, to the latest version (version 20, in case you're interested) despite the snow!

So, we can offer you once again a full range of library services online. As well as searching the catalogue, you can make hold requests, access your account, renew your books and request inter-library loans.

We have taken this opportunity to freshen up the library's web catalogue (library.rhul.ac.uk). We hope you like it. Our aim was to improve your experience of using the catalogue. We know we still have some way to go in this respect, so in the coming year we shall be working hard to improve it some more.

Also, if you come into the library to use our services in person (but, during this period of adverse weather please check the library home page for updates on opening hours) you will find our self-service kiosks available again, as well as all the other services you would normally expect.

We really would appreciate your feedback on the new web catalogue (especially if you notice any bugs!) or any other aspect of our services. Please e-mail us with your comments to library@rhul.ac.uk.

Are you a student representative? We will be holding a Staff / Student Forum on Thursday 3rd December in the Seminar Room, Level 1 of the Bedford Library, at 3.00pm. Please join us for tea, coffee and cake and share any issues or concerns you may have about the Library and IT Services.

If you are a student representative, this is an opportunity to raise with us any issues or concerns about the Library and IT Services on behalf of you and your student colleagues. The meeting will be attended by senior staff from the Library and IT Department.

IS228 Managing Information with RefWorks

Learn how to store references and add them directly to Word documents using RefWorks, a web based reference manager, which enables you to store, retrieve and format your references from PCs and Macs anywhere on the Internet. Aimed at anyone doing a dissertation or extended piece of work, this session will enable you to:

Create your own database in RefWorks
Save book and journal references into your databases
Directly add references from your database to Word documents
Reformat your documents in different journal citation styles

In response to your feedback, the College has given the Library extra funds to extend the Music Library's opening hours until the end of the 2009/10 Session.

The revised opening hours are (as of today):

Monday – Thursday: 09.00-20.00

Friday: 09.00-17.00

Saturday: 11.30-16.30

Sunday: Closed
