Royboy Productions Coverage: 2012 Park City Chill- Park City, KS

This was my 2nd trip to the Park City Chill Bike and Car Show in Park City, KS just outside of Wichita. This is a nice indoor show with plenty to look at.

My buddies from Zombie Speed Shop in Winfield, KS (now working with Chaotic Customs in Mulvane, KS) brought out some of their rides including Corey's International.

Johnny Hammon brought out this very cool 47 Chevrolet

This Merc was reportedly customized in 1961 and has not been touched since, recently being retrieved from storage it was definitely cool to check out.

One of the cars that Ron Pinkston's Hooligans Hot Rods has worked on.

Kind of hard to see here but this car and bike were built by the Peabody High School shop classes, very cool!

For the 2nd week in a row I was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Vibrasonic. Once again I'm so very proud of a bunch of my friends stepping up to help finish the late Elden Titus' final build, you guys are what this is all about.

Factory fuel injection but I don't know if that was original on this car or out of a Corvette, I apologize for my ignorance!

A wild old school kustom Falcon, but I don't know if it technically meets our year requirements here, it's been kustomized enough I honestly don't know what year it is.

Starbird Exotic Car Show, Tulsa, OK

A few weeks ago Straykatkustoms (Mick) texted me that he was going to go to the National Rod & Custom Hall of Fame Induction Banquet and the announcement of the Fine Nine qualifiers for the Tulsa Starbird show. It took me about 5 minutes to decide that sounded like an interesting way to spend a Friday night and get my ticket ordered. I won't be missing another one, what a great experience! Tons of great folks were in attendance and we heard some great stories about the inductees, it was very worth it!

On to the Show!

This was the unveiling of the Vibrasonic, a kustom that was started by the late Elden Titus and finished with the help of a ton of his friends. It was very cool to see the car painted and assembled and out on display!

Congrats to everyone involved on this very cool build.

Congratulations to Ron Dubberstein & his 1955 Chevy "Exota" for winning 3 Excellence Awards at Kansas City World of Wheels! His awards were for Best Radical Custom, Best Display and BEST PAINT. Paint & body by Chaotic Customs and airbrushing by Redhouse Custom Paint.

Chad Kolman showed up with a 1947 Buick that was very very nice. 3 year project from what I was told. I can't wait to get a chance to take more photos of this beautiful new kustom.

I was lucky enough to be able to spend most of the weekend with friends and hotrod/kustom family at the Century II hall in Wichita for the 2012 Starbird-Devlin Car Show.

I don't have much time right now so I'll skip the stories and just show you some pics, of course we start off with the Mulvane Marauders and our own Yblock292's 29 Roadster, but that's just because they were parked about 20 feet inside the door.

Roger Morrison brought this beautiful 32 out that's been at Pebble Beach before...

The first name of this show is still Starbird, Darryl brought up the Predicta, I always loved this car. Hub Harness was telling me how everyone told Darryl that he couldn't drive this car so he took it down the strip. The steering is controlled by a lever in the center console, push forward to turn one way, pull back to turn another. Darryl told Hub that it was scary but he made the run.

Thanks for going along with me to the 2012 Starbird-Devlin Car Show! This is just the first event of 2012 there are 18 more on my schedule for this year, last year I hit 35 total so I'm sure that 18 will grow before long.

not much to say this time, the cars say more than I ever could

As one would expect in Austin, the music was fantastic. I didn't get shots of all of the bands but I did venture over and get some of my buddies in Pushrod who started the day off music wise. I can't imagine playing in those temps, my fingers wouldn't want to work

Baaaaaaaaaaaaad, glad I'm not driving it, I don't have the cajones to stand on it as I straddle the rear end sitting between the slicks. Yes I'm a wuss.

Absolutely love McPhail's Buick

Who couldn't love Roy Drapal's awesome rod. Amazing story of the build, if you get the chance to see the car in person ask a bunch of questions, this is the real deal folks.

Then I ventured over into the parking lot for a peek at what people drove to get to the show.

The Paladins took the stage mid afternoon, played a great set and convinced me that I needed to see them again that night at the Continental Club.

Here's Roy and his trophy. Such a kool story of a homebuilt hot rod from the late 40's early 50's built with no electricity and a ton of ingenuity!

So then I went and stood at the gate so I can try to capture some "action" shots of the rides leaving.

Thanks to everyone involved in putting on this killer weekend. The show was great, the bands were awesome and I had an amazing time hanging out with everyone.

This coming weekend is my Mid Decembrrrr Run my last event of the year, 35 events, over 10,000 miles and over 14,000 total pictures. It's been a great run so far, see you at a show.

Royboy goes to the Hot Rod Revolution part 1-3

Wow! That's the basis of my review of my weekend in Austin. Fantastic cars, killer music and most importantly some of the koolest people anywhere made this one of my best weekends all year.

I've started using Instagram on my iPhone and this trip I experimented with documenting the trip with that app. So along the way I was snapping shots from my iPhone which was mounted to the dash of my car.

I left home (Central KS) Thursday evening, determined to make it past the dreaded Fort Worth traffic so Friday's drive would be short and fun.

Finally around 2am I found a hotel on the south side of Ft. Worth and decided to crash out for a few hours.

Friday was a nice short drive of a little over 2 hours.

I rolled into town on Friday and promptly took a nap in my hotel room...party animal. But later on I went over to Austin Speed Shop for their pre-party and for the the screening of Brian Darwas' film "A Sweet Sickness: The Flathead Movie" Arriving fashionably almost late the place was packed.

NotStockPhotography was there with his wife and their kool Corvair Van.

Tons of killer rides in the parking lot, tons of great people milling about.

Okay so I got a little artsy fartsy with a couple of shots...

Then I met up with the crew from Pushrod and we set out for the Continental Club to catch Dave Alvin on stage. Wow! that was a great show. I highly recommend if he's coming to your town you need to be in the audience. I was blown away by the whole performance.

So Saturday morning I roll over to Camp Mabry, it was the first time that I ever was carded to get into a car show, a new experience but to be allowed to have the show on the base was very cool indeed.

The backdrop wasn't as cool as the power plant last year but that was almost a once in a lifetime type background for a show. There were plenty of interesting sites to look at, I didn't get to go checkout the museum and I regret that now.

The temps were decent but the wind was not, after braving the cold most of the day I finally broke down and bought a Austin Speed Shop hoodie, yes I'm a wimp.

Looking Back: 2011 Darryl Starbird Rod & Custom Show Wichita, KS

Just have a few minutes here but I hopefully will be doing this weekly. Today we're looking back at one of the shows from earlier this year.

The first show of the year for me each year is the Darryl Starbird Rod & Custom Show held at Century II in Wichita, KS. Here's a bit I wrote about the show in the gallery:
"In the dead of winter each January it's a pleasure every year to get together with my hotrod and kustom family and spend some time inside WITH a bunch of cool cars. The Darryl Starbird Rod & Custom show in Wichita, KS typically pulls about 400 cars max for a 3 day indoor show. As the name implies rods and customs show in abundance, but so do stock restorations, survivors, 4x4's, lowriders, rat rods, and various types of racers.

A couple of very cool front engine dragsters were on display this year, as were some very nice traditional built hot rods. Traditional built rods are not rats, and this show had both build styles represented nicely. The car count and the vendor count both seemed down this year, but that was a blessing instead of a hinderance. Less cars means more room to get around the cars, and it seemed that the cars that didn't show were the ones that I normally don't shoot anyhow, so the show's overall quality went up as a result.

The Marauders and Fundamentals had great club displays with the Marauders taking home the prize for best display for their "model" car display complete with giant exacto knives and Testor paint bottles to complete the look. The Fundamentals went with a beach theme and rumor has it some Marauders may have been involved with an incident involving Baby Ruth candy bars being dropped in the Fundamentals "sand" (kitty litter). I'm not going to say where the story came from or how hard the person who told it to me was laughing when he told how they did it.

On a cool note, this show will be changing next year, Tim Devlin and others have purchased the show and will continue it and will be donating proceeds from the show back to Wichita area charities, too cool! Go to http://www.starbirddevlin.com/ for more info on the show in the future.

2012 Calendar for Charity!!!

Hey folks, once again I've scoured the thousands of car show coverage photos that I took this year to create some calendars to raise money for some great charities. I shoot the shots at the shows that I travel to across the midwest and beyond, I also do the layout, print them, bind them and ship them myself. As you can see, they are a bit different from your standard calendars and well worth the $15 if I do say so myself!

The Traditionals Edition will go to benefit Victory Junction Gang Camp for Kids, VJ is a summer camp for terminally ill children. Kyle and Patty Petty of NASCAR started the camp in memory of their son, racer Adam Petty as it was his dream to create a camp like this for kids that normally wouldn't get the camp experience. With a fully functional hospital on site this is a truly unique experience for the campers.

There's also an edition made from shots taken at Vintage Torque Fest that benefit Helping Hannah's Heart. A great cause, a great show and a damn good time, so check the show out in 2012!

Shots from the Stray Kat 500 and the Starliner shows went into the Stray Kat Kustoms edition, proceeds from this one will go to the Red Cross. Stray Kat Kustoms shows are the most laid back shows you'll ever run across, when you attend a Stray Kat show you are family. I love these shows and I'm proud to be able to cover them each year.

And finally the fantastic Greaserama show shots were combed for the Greaserama edition! This is one of the most fun shows anywhere, hang out all day in the drive in and once the sun goes down, watch kool movies! Labor Day weekend you'll always find me at the Greaserama!

We're still outside the gate now watching the cars roll through inspection at this point, also about here is where I realize that I forgot my hat and I am out of sunscreen...ooops that smell is probably my irish skin melting... This combo was just too kool, I had to keep catching shots of it. Part 10, and we still arent even into the show yet! 3 different 54 Fords with the glass top at the Hunnert, too kool Awesome color! Love, love, love this flamed Merc!

Part 6 starts off with the cars in the staging lanes outside of the show, I'd guess around 7:30 am, still 90 minutes before the show opens.

I love weird and wild kustoms, this one is just that!

A this point the cars are rolling into the show, there didn't seem to be as many OT cars this year per the rules. There were a few that I questioned why they got in but by the rules they did fit the requirements. Whatever, if I want to change the rules I'd put on my own show haha.

Part 3, finally home from a long day at work and dinner with the fam. The little nephews LOVE the 57! I got tired of waiting for people to clear out from around Gary's 40... soooo sorry but they're in the shot, it was too close to crop and look good.

Part 4
Still at the Pre-party on Friday night. By now it's getting pretty dark so I switched to a lens with no zoom but a much larger aperture so I could try to still get some shots in the low light.

So, fast forward to 6am on Saturday morning. We figured it's the last Hunnert there's bound to be a ton of cars in line, so we headed out for the show early. This gorgeous Chevy was in the parking lot, turns out the owner also has a beautiful light blue 53 truck that was in my Trucks calendar last year.

Bob's 32 pickup was leaving us in the dust on the way to the show, I think Dad was too scared to stand on his new gas pedal enough to catch up...

About 30 cars in line and the sun isn't even up yet, gates open at 9am...

Bob and Dad wait in line, Dad's 57 will be deemed too stock and will spend the day outside of the show. I'm not complaining it was fairly judged as per the rules posted for the show.

There's part 4, 5 is on the way soon then I'm off to bed, thanks for checking them out folks, we haven't even touched the surface yet! My hope is that those of you that didn't make it can almost feel like you were there in some way, I hope you dig it.

Lots of beautiful rides showed up, there were a bunch of muscle car and other off topic cars but I ignored most of them because that's not what I'm into. Sorry if you want to see pics of them but most muscle cars are restored to the same condition as every other one and that's boring to me...

Post #1 of many!

First I want to say thanks to the Chrome Czars for putting on this show. A show this big takes a TON of logistics and it seemed to go off pretty smoothly. This was our third trip up for a Hunnert, starting with the 8th and last show in Morris, and it was a great time.

After making a deal to trade his 72 LeMans (and a little cash) with Bob from Top Notch Vehicles for a 57 Chevy Wagon, my old man (Povertyflats' favorite brother in law) and I loaded the car up and headed out Thursday evening from Central KS. We got to the far side of KC before we called it a night. This made for a nice relaxing drive the rest of the way to Decatur, across MO on highway 36.

Some S.O.B. in a musclecar was tailgating us the whole way...

Crossing the Mississippi

I tried pulling some Family Vacation lines when we crossed the Mississippi...they were completely lost on my Dad...

Other than a bit of wind the weather was perfect and we arrived in Forsyth at the hotel ahead of schedule. We unloaded Dad's Lemans and helped Bob unload the new to us 57 and a cherry 32 Ford Pickup.

The deal was made and the keys traded hands. Bob and Dad wondered if the car was too stock to get into the show or not. We agreed it probably was but it didn't hurt to try.

It wasn't long before we took off for Clinton, IL for the Friday night Pre-party.

This year's pre-party was packed, so many more people that there really wasn't a way to cruise, and a ton of really kool rides showed up too.

Everyone's favorite guy BobK was in attendance of course, always good to see you and the Mrs. Bob!

2011 Rumble in Delano show coverage and pics! Part 1

Leading up to last weekend there were lots of murmurs about the new weekend for the Rumble in Delano in Wichita, KS, in it's 3rd year the show moved to late September from the middle of June. The first 2 years for the show were just plain hot, so it was a welcome change for that reason, however the new weekend falls on the same date as a long running show just 90 miles down the road. Due to some conflicts in my schedule I wasn't able to hit both shows so after stopping by a local German Car Club show in Salina I went to Wichita for the Rumble and I was not disappointed.

As soon as I hit the edge of the Delano District I see some familiar rides and owners, I'd stumbled right into the middle of the Mulvane Marauders as they were parking.

The Delano District is just to the west of the Arkansas River on Douglas Street in Wichita, a cool old business district where they block off the street for a few blocks and all of the hoodlums bring their rides out to hang out. The September date made the temps just perfect.

Yblock292 brought his 40 out to play, but as he is prone to say, he'll bring whichever car starts and has gas in it, there's not a bad car in his collection so it's all good Jack :)

I go to a lot of shows, and I just don't see many Comet wagons, I dig it.

I never did see the owner of this under construction ride, but it's a nice start!

Finkd brought out the Caddy... and told me I should buy it...Jeff, if I had the cash, it would already be in my garage. One of the most beautiful 57 Caddy's ever built in my opinion.

McPhail brought out his new project, very kool, just love the shape of this bodystyle.

Some more of the Marauders rides, such a wide variety in this club, and all very kool kats to hang with.

I keep forgetting to ask how many gallons it takes to prime 8 carbs...

Straykatkustoms brought up the Merc to join in the festivities.

Butch left is sick green 56 Chevy gasser at home to show of this beauty.

Part 7 Continuing coverage of the Stray Kat Kustoms Starliner show at the Kansas Aviation Museum

Hub Harness brought out his beautiful Buick, this is my favorite kustom. Sorry to anyone that might get their feelings hurt but I just love this ride.

My McPherson family was in town, good to see ya boys as always.

This truck is just too damn kool.

Then I went up into the old tower, see this isn't just an aviation museum, this is the old Wichita Airport. Cool views from up here, got to watch a rain storm come in and just barely miss us, but it did drop the temp about 15 degrees.

Here's a better shot of Kevin's Galaxie, with the sun farther to the west and behind some clouds it helped a bunch.

Just as we were all leaving the rain came down.

Another great Starliner in the books!

Part 5! With the fun of the Friday Garage Krawl in our memories, it was on to the main event of the Starliner show at the Kansas Aviation Museum. Before I go any further I want to say thanks to yblock292 for not only putting together the Garage Krawl but for hosting me for the weekend. I had an absolute blast hanging out and talking hotrods and kustoms with ya!

On to the show!

My buddy Michael brought his awesome 40 Ford Truck out, I got to see it under construction, it's awesome to see it finished.

Finkd (Jeff Myers) brought out his Stude pickup, I never get tired of seeing this ride.

Part 3

Next on the Garage Krawl was Rocky's shop.

Then it was off to Ron Pinkston's Hooligan Hot Rods

Then we made our way to Red House Custom Paint in Derby, KS

Then we were off to Iron Buffalo Hot Rods at Joe's place. Now, Joe has a killer place a bunch of cool cars and he has a 2900 lb bull that he brought out for everyone. Here's Drew Carlson of Chaotic Customs in Mulvane, KS taming the savage beast...

Then much like last weekend at the Greaserama, the rain came... by the time I got to the Galaxie to roll up the windows it was hailing!

And it frickin pooooooooured....

But soon it cleared

Then it was off to Jack's (yblock292) for a cookout. Mongo51 manned the grill, dogs and burgers for all!

Another small bout of rain and then we were blessed with some beautiful skies.

Joe brought the bull over so the kids could have a ride.

Jade Carlson was nice enough to ride the bull and hold on to some of the little ones, but I don't think she had in mind that she might be up there for about an hour hahaa

Royboy's Coverage of the 2011 Starliner and Garage Krawl Part 1-2

It's been a busy week for me when it comes to posting. The KC Goodguys and Greaserama threads finally went up and now it's Starliner time!

This was my first Garage Krawl so I was excited, at Yblock292's (Jack's) place his 29 and 40 were waiting outside while his 30's were in the garage.

From there I went to the host hotel, one of the first cars that I saw was Krobe's way kool Chevy Fastback.

Tons of folks from as far away as Arkansas and of course the large contingent from Colorado were on hand for the Starliner weekend.

Aaron from Fast AL's Upholstery was on hand with his 54 Ford, Aaron just had his grand opening of his new shop in Dewey, OK, congrats buddy!

Krobe wasn't into the paparazzi treatment this early in the morning, just kidding buddy!

Then Doug Reed showed up in the gorgeous Toad.

Part 2!

Continuing on Friday morning at the host hotel as we head out for the Garage Krawl.

Johnny Hammond's 58 was on the back of the show shirts this year, along with McPhail's 58 Truck, here's a shot of Johnny's ride.

Finally it was time to take off on the Garage Krawl.

The first stop for our group was Good Jeb Upholstery on 2nd St. Jeb's just opened up this shop but he's been doing upholstery for awhile.

The McGregor boys have some kool toys, this Ford truck is sure one of them!

Next door to Good Jeb Upholstery is the Van Chase Studio, makers of some fine shift knobs and the like, very cool to see how it all comes together.

Lucky for us across the street from Jeb's is Ty's Hamburgers, a tradition in Wichita, so we slid across the street and had a bite.

Next up was Devlin Rod and Custom on Douglass.

Devlin's had a few projects in the shop, a couple had just left, but I don't see how you could have a couple more in the shop and get anything done haha. Good work is always coming out of this shop every time I see their cars at a show.

Then on to a couple of private shops JR's was first.

That's it for this post, next up we'll hit Rocky Burris' joint for a bit then off to Hooligan Hot Rods, Red House Custom Paint, The Iron Buffalo and finally yblock292's for a cookout. Don't touch that dial!

Part 5, Sunday at the 2011 Greaserama!

Yes I know I'm obsessed with shooting Firestone Tires lol

And this car, but it's too awesome for me to not shoot it over and over again.

Here's Don's 53, great guy that I've been honored to get to know a bit these last few shows.

Sunday the crowd was not as big as Saturday but there were still a ton of people in the Drive In

The lack of cars and people on Sunday early made the pictures better in my opinion.

Then I stopped by and hung out with Ben Dragdaddy's and his wife again, watched Ben work some of his magic...

There were a handful of bettys walking around taking shots with a few photographers, sorry I had to sneak one shot while they were there and posing for someone else. I shouldn't have but I did.
