A plane crash at the Aztec Municipal Airport Saturday morning killed Michael "Mike" Arnold, the former mayor of the city and current manager of the airport. New Mexico State Police report Arnold, 62, was alone in the single-engine aircraft when it crashed on takeoff about 11 a.m. Police said Arnold's family lives on the airport property, witnessed the crash and called for help. He was pronounced dead at the scene, a State Police spokesperson said. The craft came down just feet from the runway and burned on impact leaving only metal framing and charred debris. Arnold was mayor of Aztec, the county seat of San Juan County, from 1998-2001 and 2004-2008, according to the city's website.

Description:

Dozens of people were injured when a car driven by an elderly man went through a parade of hikers in Virginia, USA, on Saturday. The incident occurred in the Appalachian town of Damascus during the Trail Days festival. The main street was filled with hikers making their way from one end of town to a park at the other. Fire chief Ben Sanders said it appeared that the man behind the wheel "passed out" and the car went through the crowd. The motorist said afterward he did not remember what had happened. for Washington County emergency management director Pokey Harris said 50 - 60 people were hurt. Most had superficial injuries. Four were flown to hospitals by helicopter and five others were taken by ambulance, she said. The annual Trail Days festival celebrates the town's proximity to four scenic trails that converge there: the Appalachian Trail, US Bicycle Route 76, the Iron Mountain Trail and the Virginia Creeper Trail.

A US Airways flight was forced to make an emergency landing at the Newark, New Jersey airport early Saturday morning, around 1 a.m. EST, according to multiple reports. The aircraft would not lower its landing gear during its approach to the airfield, forcing the pilot to circle the airport in an attempt to reverse the problem. When this did not work, the pilot was forced to make a belly landing, which, according to ABC New York, was on one of the airport’s long parallel runways. The aircraft in question, a Dash 8-100, had 31 passengers on board, none of which were harmed during the emergency landing.

A Gallatin County woman has died after contracting Hantavirus, according to the Gallatin City-County Health Department. The woman in her 20s is the 10th person reported to have died from Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome in Montana since 1993. This is the first Hantavirus-related death in Montana in 2013. This is one of two recently reported cases in the state. The other is a man in his 40s from Carbon County. Both persons appear to have been recently exposed to rodents. The health department points out that Hantavirus is not transmitted from person to person. The greatest risk is associated with exposure to rodent feces in closed, dry areas.

Description:

Flash flooding continues in parts of east Alabama, and more showers and thunderstorms are expected throughout central Alabama, according to the National Weather Service. "We've had reports of flooding pretty much from Oxford south to the city of Talladega," said Jessica Talley, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Birmingham. A flash flood warning expired at 9 a.m. in Calhoun County, and one is effective in Clay and Cleburne counties until 12 p.m. The St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency has reported flooding in the Moody and Odenville areas, as well as along Highway 78. The hazardous weather outlook highlights the threat for flash flooding if more rainfall occurs in those areas, Talley said "There's a flooding potential from Blount County to Jefferson to Shelby and eastward," she said. "If anything additional happens, we could experience flooding, but our confidence isn't high enough that it will happen to issue a flash flood watch." The forecast shows that showers and thunderstorms are likely today between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Tonight, there is a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1 a.m. According to the service, the main threat of flash flooding is along and north of a line from Calera to Equality to Valley.

Description:

New Mexico health officials are urging parents to tell children not to handle wild animals. The warning comes after a bat found in northeast Albuquerque tested positive for rabies. A number of children were reportedly near the bat and took photographs of it on the evening of May 11, but it's not clear if any of them touched or handled it. Letters were sent to the parents of children who attend two nearby schools and flyers have been posted in the neighborhood, but the state Health Department says no known exposures have been reported. Health Secretary Retta Ward says the state wants to make sure no children were inadvertently exposed to rabies. Rabies is a fatal disease if it is not treated before symptoms develop.

A raccoon found in the town of Marcellus has tested positive for rabies, the Onondaga County Health Department said Friday evening. "This is the first positive rabies findings of the season," Commissioner Dr. Cynthia B. Morrow said in a news release. "It is important not to touch or feed wildlife because they may be rabid." The raccoon was seen in the vicinity of West Seneca Turnpike. Rabies is a fatal disease that attacks the brain and spinal cord. It can take weeks or even months for rabies symptoms to appear, but early treatment after exposure can prevent rabies. The health department said any mammal can get rabies, but it's most common in bats, raccoons, skunks and foxes.

Description:

Algerian Customs officers and borders agents have discovered lately radioactive waste in three containers shipped from China to Algiers port. According to Algerian local press, the tests carried out on the suspected hazardous merchandise and material found in the containers were indeed radioactive stones and rocks. The containers were imported by an Algerian businessman. Investigators say the radioactive material was brought to Algeria by a vessel dubbed “Nicolas” flying Antigua flag from China. The container ship made a stop-over in Malta before heading to Algeria after departing from Chinese port of Qingdao, one of the busiest sea ports in the world. The origin and the final destination the radioactive cargo have not yet been determined but the investigators suspect international traffickers of nuclear waste to be involved in the affair as Africa is seemingly becoming a dumpster of radioactive waste for greedy international corporations and super powers. Radioactive waste is hazardous to most forms of life and the environment. It is usually a by-product of nuclear power generation and other applications of nuclear fission or nuclear technology, such as research and medicine. Radioactivity diminishes over time, so waste is typically isolated and stored for a period of time until it no longer poses a hazard. The period of time waste must be stored depends on the type of waste. Low-level waste with low levels of radioactivity per mass or volume (such as some common medical or industrial radioactive wastes) may need to be stored for only hours or days, while high-level wastes (such as spent nuclear fuel or by-products of nuclear reprocessing) present a serious danger to all forms of life and need 10,000 to millions of years before starting fading. Current major approaches to managing radioactive waste include segregation and storage for short-lived wastes, near-surface disposal for low and some intermediate level wastes, and deep burial or transmutation for the high-level wastes. However none of these approaches are safe and cost-effective.

Description:

Tremors were detected at Pavlof Volcano, 625 miles southwest of Anchorage, according to the Alaska Volcano Observatory. Satellite imagery showed the mountain was "very, very hot," said John Power, the U.S. Geological Survey scientist in charge at the observatory. The aviation alert level for Pavlof was raised from "yellow" to "orange." A major ash emission could threaten international flights. Pavlof is 37 miles from the community of Cold Bay, which was notified of the new activity that began about 8 a.m. Monday. Because of clouds, the volcano was not visible to the village of 100. The volcano last erupted in 2007, but residents there said that eruption had no impact on Cold Bay, likely because the winds blew any ash fall away. Ash clouds were visible to residents, however.

Description:

Southwestern China's Tibet Autonomous Region has reported an outbreak of the highly contagious H5N1 bird flu virus in poultry, the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) announced on Monday. Thirty-five chickens at a farm in a village in Mainling County of Nyingchi Prefecture showed symptoms of the suspected avian flu and died last Tuesday, according to the ministry. The National Avian Influenza Reference Laboratory on Monday confirmed that the virus was H5N1 bird flu after testing samples collected at the farm, the MOA said. Local authorities have sealed off and sterilized the infected area, where a total of 372 chickens have been culled and safely disposed of in order to prevent the disease from spreading, according to the MOA. Bird flu, or avian influenza, is a contagious disease of animal origin caused by viruses that normally infect only birds and, less commonly, pigs. It can be fatal to humans.

Description:

Five hikers, including a 6-year-old boy, were attacked by bees Sunday morning as they hiked Linda Vista Trail, near North Oracle Road and East Calle Concordia. The boy was stung more than 100 times by the bees, and the other four hikers, all male, were estimated to be stung more than 150 times, said Deputy Jesus Banuelos, a Pima County Sheriff's Department spokesman. The child was alert and responsive during the rescue, Banuelos said. "It appears the bees came out of nowhere and attacked them," said Banuelos. Golder Ranch Fire District firefighters called the sheriff's department shortly before 10 a.m. requesting assistance in the rescue, Banuelos said. Three deputies arrived within eight minutes with bee suits and began hiking up the trail to reach the group who were on a rock formation, making it difficult for rescuers to reach them, Banuelos said. A medical helicopter assisted the deputies by hovering over the area where the hikers were, and the chopper also helped disperse the bees, said Banuelos. When deputies reached the rock formation, they gave the bee suits to the hikers, who were still being stung by the bees, Banuelos said. The chopper could not land in the rough terrain. The boy was carried out and taken by ambulance to University of Arizona Medical Center-University Campus. Two others were taken to Oro Valley Hospital, and the other two refused to be taken to a hospital, said Banuelos. Everyone was reported to be in stable condition. Southern Arizona Rescue Association and Golder Ranch Fire District firefighters assisted in the evacuation. Deputies cleared the scene at 11:20 a.m. This is among several bee attacks in the Tucson-area and Southern Arizona in recent weeks. One climber died last week from a bee attack.

The flood situation along the River Nyando Basin in Nyanza has worsened after the river burst its banks, displacing more than 1,000 people. Three schools have been closed indefinitely after River Nyando burst its banks following heavy down pour that pounded most parts of Nyanza province last night. Learning was paralyzed in Ahero Girls Secondary School, Kokwach Primary and Apondo Primary Schools after their classrooms, toilets and kitchen were submerged. The Kisumu County Director of Education, Beatrice Adu said they decided to close schools to avoid a catastrophe. Area District Commissioner, Isaiah Tanui says that more schools affected by floods are likely to be closed down due the situation because the environment is not conducive for learning. Western Kenya Red Cross coordinator Emmanuel Owako said the situation was pathetic and their response was overwhelmed as they were faced with difficulties in ensuring the safety of the affected families. In response to the floods, the Kenya Red Cross Western branch has organized a free medical camp for the displaced families as an outbreak of water borne diseases is imminent.

Description:

County environmental health officials urged campers and hikers to take simple steps to protect themselves Friday after routine monitoring and testing showed that a ground squirrel on Palomar Mountain had plague. The squirrel, which was trapped at the Cedar Grove Campground, marked the first case of plague found this year. Department of Environmental Health Director Jack Miller said it's not unusual to find plague in local mountains during warmer months - and that people could take simple steps to protect themselves from exposure. "The big thing is to avoid contact with squirrels and the fleas that they can carry," Miller said. "Campers should set up tents away from squirrel burrows, and hikers and campers should never feed squirrels and warn their children not to play with squirrels." Plague is a bacterial disease of wild rodents, but it can be transmitted to people by fleas that feed on the blood of a sick animal and then bite humans. There have been no locally acquired human cases of plague reported in San Diego County. The County routinely monitors flea populations and takes measures to control those populations at campgrounds when necessary to reduce the potential for people coming into contact with them. Plague Warning signs are posted in all areas where plague has been confirmed.

Description:

Two teenagers from Montgomery and Liberty counties have died, and a third is in critical condition. Health experts said all three shared similar symptoms. Now they are working together to figure out what is behind it all. Tyler Lane Budro, 17, was the first case. He got sick in February and died on March 10. Tyler lived in Liberty County and was a junior at Hull-Daisetta High School. His mother said he first had a fever, and then violent seizures started days later. An infectious disease specialist in Montgomery County said Tyler, as well as a teenage girl and a teenage boy in that county had similar symptoms. The girl died on April 29. The boy is in critical condition at a Houston hospital. The specialist also said the teens' symptoms included a fever, coughing, pneumonia, seizures and respiratory failure. Dr. Syed Ibrahim is Montgomery County's epidemiologist. He said they ran 30 tests on the teens, including checks for rabies and meningitis. All tests came back with negative results, so health experts still have no idea what any of the teens came down with.

Dr. Ibrahim and other area health experts are still looking for answers. "I'm really concerned. I'm sad as well because these are the cases of the teenagers in our county," said Dr. Ibrahim, MD, MPH. Parents and students at New Caney High School, where the teen who is in the hospital attends, are worried too. "I think they should have informed us about it more 'cuz it's not right that some kids don't know about it and other kids are spreading (rumors) making it worse," said student Courtney Villareal. School officials in New Caney ISD said they did not notify parents because they don't have enough information. They said they don't know what they're dealing with at this point. Dr. Ibrahim said the disease or diseases do not appear to be contagious." Some in New Caney ISD said they are afraid people might panic. Health experts stress there is no need for that. They're just stumped. Tyler's grieving mom is hoping experts can crack the case very soon.

Description:

Police found Steven Johnson dead, hanging from a cliff in the Santa Rita mountains. He and his dog were covered with bee stings. A climber’s body was found covered in bee stings and hanging off a southern Arizona cliff on Monday. His faithful dog was lying dead on top of the ridge. Steven Johnson, 55, was last seen on Friday hiking in the Santa Rita Mountains with his dog right beside him. The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office found Johnson hanging off Mount Hopkins in his climbing gear. The cause of death has yet to be determined, but officials suspect a bee attack. Sheriff's Lt. Raoul Rodriguez says Johnson may have disturbed bees by hammering a spike into the cliff. His dog’s body was also covered with bee stings. The Tucson man was an experienced hiker and climber, The Arizona Daily Star reports. Friends became worried when he didn’t show up at work on Monday. They posted messages asking about his whereabouts on Facebook, then contacted the police. Other climbers said that aggressive bees have been a cause for worry in the area. “Friends of ours have been run off and had to leave their equipment and then have to go back another day because the bees are swarming. And they are mad,” Eric Rhicard, a friend of Johnson’s said.

But since Johnson was rappelling off a cliff, he had nowhere to go to escape the stings. His body was found 70 feet off the ground and 80 feet away from the top of the cliff, according to Sky News. Johnson was reportedly preparing Mount Hopkins for future climbers. "It's devastating news for the Tucson community, for sure, he was a very prolific climber in Tucson," said John Mavko, who works at Rocks & Ropes, a climbing facility frequented by Johnson. A local bee specialist told KVOA that this year’s bee population has been building aggressive and particularly large hives. "The bees are growing like crazy, in fact, every hive I've seen has been larger than expected for this time in the season," said Greg Denker, of American Bee Control. Three people were hospitalized in Tucson last Thursday after bee attacks. A woman on the city’s east side was walking past a golf store when a swarm of bees suddenly descended, covering her from head to toe. The attack left her with more than 200 stings.

The Health Department spent the start of this week giving vaccinations to more than 100 students at both Tunstall High School and Tunstall Middle School. The schools are beside one another. There are only ten days left in the school year and nurses will monitor the chicken pox outbreak until then. Last week nearly two dozen students reported the sickness within three days, the highest number of cases at one time at Tunstall.

A harsh summer sun troubled Delhiites for another day today as the mercury once again touched 42 degree Celsius, the highest for this season, as Weatherman predicted heatwave conditions by middle of the month. Today's maximum was three points above normal and a steady rise from yesterday's 40.8 deg C, which was two degree above normal for this time of the year, the MeT department said. The minimum temperature remained one degree below normal at 23.7 deg C, which was significantly down from yesterday's 25.3 deg C. Humidity levels were recorded between 13 and 57 per cent. The weatherman has predicted clear sky for tomorrow and temperature between 24 and 41 deg C. Weather Office had predicted that the city will witness a significant increase in maximum temperature for a week till May 16. "Latest model output and the analysis indicate that the maximum temperature over Delhi (Safdarjung) will be in the range of 41-42 deg C during May 8 and 10, 39-40 deg C during May 11 and 13 and 41-43deg C during May 14-16. "The maximum temperature may reach around 44 deg C in some areas of NCR on May 16. Therefore, heat wave conditions are likely to develop over Delhi NCR by middle of May," a statement said. It further said drop in maximum temperature during the weekend will be in association with a western disturbance affecting the neighbouring areas of Delhi NCR during May 11-12.

Panama on Tuesday ordered government offices and private businesses to slash their power consumption and temporarily closed schools in response to a drought that has sapped the country's hydroelectric energy supply. Opening hours for government offices will be reduced, while supermarkets, bars, cinemas, restaurants, casinos and other night spots would have to close between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. from Monday to Thursday, according to a statement from the president's office. Private businesses in the tropical Central American nation will also be forced to cut air-conditioning use by four hours a day, beginning Wednesday. It's unclear how long the rationing will last, though government officials say they would reconsider on Sunday how soon they could re-open schools. Panama, one of Latin America's fastest-growing economies, uses hydroelectric power to generate 60 percent of its electricity. But reservoirs are now low after months without rain. The Panama Canal, which transports about five percent of world trade, is unaffected by the power rationing because it produces its own energy, a spokeswoman said. The drought has killed hundreds of cattle, damaged crops, and caused some $200 million in losses in Panama. The government on Tuesday declared a drought emergency in four provinces, representing about a third of the nation's territory.

Description:

A state-wide measles alert has been issued in Queensland after a mine worker was diagnosed with the potentially deadly virus. Queensland Health says the central Queensland man probably caught the virus during a recent holiday in Asia and may have passed it on to colleagues. He had contact with fellow mine workers at the Moranbah mine camp while he was contagious from April 25 to May 6, acting senior director of the communicable diseases unit Dr Stephen Lambert says. He was in the dining room of the Grosvenor Village camp around April 29 and 30 between 6.30pm and 7.30pm (AEST). Queensland Health believes many of the mine workers he had contact with have returned to their homes around the state, potentially spreading the virus. Dr Lambert says anyone who thinks they might have been exposed to the virus should make sure they're protected against measles and seek medical advice if symptoms develop. Queensland Health is urging anyone born since 1966 who hasn't had two doses of the measles vaccine - or actually had the virus - to get the free vaccine from a GP. However, pregnant women shouldn't get the vaccine. "Queensland Health will continue to actively investigate this case and do whatever it can to prevent further transmission," Dr Lambert said in a statement on Wednesday.

An explosive eruption has started at Popocatepetl outside of Mexico City. The restless Mexican volcano has been producing steam-and-ash plumes intermittently over the past year, but tonight there is a significant ash plume accompanied by large incadescent blocks being thrown down the slopes of the volcano. Show the growing ash column and eventual explosion that occurred at 20:14 PM local time in Mexico. The ash plume has been spotted as high as 7.6 km / 25,000 feet heading to the southeast according to the latest Washington VAAC update. However, the first local reports put the ash plume at 3.2 km / 10,500 feet. Before this activity, CENAPRED had the volcano on Yellow-Level 2 alert status.

Description:

One of the Philippines' most active volcanoes spewed huge rocks and ash early Tuesday after a 3-year calm, killing four climbers and trapping others near the crater, officials said. Rescue teams were sent to Mayon volcano in the central Philippines to look for four climbers and guides trapped after the mild eruption, Albay provincial Gov. Joey Salceda said. Clouds have cleared over the volcano, which was quiet later in the morning. The four climbers who died were struck by huge rocks, guide Kenneth Jesalva said from a camp near the crater. Another man was critically injured from a group of eight that included five foreigners and three Filipino guides. One of those killed was Filipino. The nationalities of the foreign climbers were not immediately clear. No bodies have been retrieved yet.

Jesalva said he was in the group that spent the night on the picturesque mountain, known for its almost-perfect cone, when the volcano rumbled back to life early in the morning and rocks "as big as a living room" came raining down on them. He rushed back to the base camp to call for help. The head of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Renato Solidum, said Tuesday's eruption was normal for the restive Mayon, about 340 kilometers (212 miles) southeast of Manila. It has erupted about 40 times during the last 400 years. In 2010, thousands of residents moved to temporary shelters when the volcano ejected ash in an 8-kilometer (5-mile) zone surrounding the crater. Solidum said that no alert was raised for the volcano following the latest eruption and no evacuation was being planned. Climbers are not allowed when an alert is up, and the recent calm may have encouraged this week's trek.

Description:

Scientists say there were two or three minor explosions at Alaska's Cleveland Volcano on Saturday morning. The volcano in the Aleutian Islands is 940 miles southwest of Anchorage. The Alaska Volcano Observatory and U.S. Geological Survey say satellites detected a small, low-altitude ash cloud and elevated surface temperatures at the summit. The Federal Aviation Administration said there are no flight restrictions as a result. The volcano's most recent significant eruption began in February 2001 and featured three explosive events that sent ash clouds as high 39,000 feet above sea level. It also produced a rubbly lava flow and hot avalanche that reached the sea. The most recent minor ash emissions were observed in November 2012.

A rabid bat landed on a man's neck east of Barstow on Tuesday, prompting concerns by health officials that he may have been exposed to rabies. The man, whose name wasn't available, was standing outside of the book store at Kelso Depot in the Mojave National Preserve when the bat landed on him. The bat tested positive for rabies. The depot is on Kelso Cima Road at Kelbaker Road, south of the community of Cima. San Bernardino County Public Health officials say the disease is almost always fatal in humans when symptoms begin.

Description:

The minister of state for disaster preparedness Musa Ecweru has warned of a possible cholera outbreak in some parts of Kasese district which were affected by the floods. Ecweru who visited the affected areas of Bulembia division in Kasese municipality and Karusandara sub county in Busongora south on Friday said that leaders in Kasese district should ensure that people should get safe and clean water for the people who were affected by the floods. He said government will ensure that people get relief and also called on non-government organizations to support the victims of the floods. "I am scared. If the situation here is not controlled it may result into the outbreak of cholera because people don’t have safe water for drinking and they are only depending on river Nyamwamba. The whole water system has broken down," Ecweru warned. He noted that the magnitude of the problem can not only be solved by the district local leaders but it needs collaborative efforts to come up with a lasting solution to the problem.

Students who have dined at the Nordstrom Cafe located in the Stonestown Galleria may have been exposed to typhoid fever after a food handler was diagnosed with the bacteria earlier today, according to the San Francisco Department of Public Health. Those who ate at the location on April 16, 17, 18, 20 or 27 may have been exposed to the illness and are urged to seek medical treatment if they have any symptoms. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, typhoid fever is "life-threatening," with 5,700 cases popping up each year. SF State's Student Health Center cites symptoms of the illness as "fever, weakness, stomach pains, headache, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea." In some cases, typhoid fever is known to "cause flat, rose-colored spots on the skin." "We were notified by the San Francisco Department of Public Health about an unusual situation involving one of our Stonestown Galleria employees who has been diagnosed with typhoid fever," a Nordstrom official said in a statement issued today. "This is the first time we've experienced this type of situation and we apologize for any concern or angst this has caused." According to an ABC7 report, Nordstrom said the company is looking through credit card records to find customers and offer them free testing at a select local clinics.

One of three Portugese Man-o-War found washed up on Pawleys Island Friday - and there could be more elsewhere and more on the way. These dangerous jellyfish normally prefer the warmer Gulf Stream waters, but three days of strong onshore winds have blown them toward onto our beaches. A small craft advisory has been in effect for the past two days and continue through Saturday. Coastal winds have been out of the northeast at 15-25 mph with gusts over 30 mph have since Thursday, and will continue into the weekend. Detached tentacles and dead specimens (including those that wash up on shore) can sting just as painfully as a live organism in the water - and may be trouble for hours or even days after the death of the organism or the detachment of tentacles.

Description:

The Andalusia Department of Health confirmed an outbreak of Q fever in Villaverde del Rio that affected 17 people. Q fever is a zoonosis transmitted to humans through the air, never from person to person, by inhalation of these organisms from air contaminated mostly by excreta of infected animals. The disease, with an incubation period of 10 to 40 days, produces high fevers and headaches, can affect organs such as the liver and, in severe cases, lead to pneumonia, but it has a low mortality and can be treated with antibiotics. In Villaverde, the rumors that resulted from lack of information have it that more than 100 people are affected; however, the health department gives assurances that only 17 have been affected by the disease, and the clinical evolution of all of them has been favorable. Moreover, the Junta government says that the incubation phase has passed, and currently there are no confirmed cases. The origin of the fever was located in a cabin of goats, which was isolated. However, other sources indicate that at least 3 people with very similar symptoms have been admitted in the Virgen Macarena Hospital, but the diagnosis of Q fever is not as yet confirmed. Among them is a 44 year old man, a barber by trade, who as of yesterday (29 Apr 2013) remained in the ICU. Magdalena Martin, PP (Popular Party) spokesperson in the Municipality of Villaverde, asked that the local authorities and the Junta release the necessary information to reassure the residents.

Description:

Five Saudis have died of a new SARS-like virus during the past few days and two more are being treated in an intensive care unit, the health ministry said. In a statement cited by the Saudi SPA agency late on Wednesday, the ministry said that all the deaths occurred in the Ahsaa province in the oil-rich eastern region of the kingdom. Known as novel coronavirus or hCoV-EMC, the virus was first detected in mid-2012 and is a cousin of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), which triggered a scare 10 years ago when it erupted in east Asia, leaping to humans from animal hosts. The health ministry said it is taking "all precautionary measures for persons who have been in contact with the infected people... and has taken samples from them to examine if they are infected." However, the ministry gave no figures for how many people have been examined to see if they have the lethal disease. Sixteen people have now died from 23 cases detected in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Germany and Britain. Riyadh has accounted for most of the deaths, with 11 people including the five new fatalities.

Description:

Two people in China have died after being infected with H7N9 avian influenza - a sub-type that had not previously been transmitted to humans - the government said Sunday. An 87-year-old man in Shanghai fell ill on February 19 and died on March 4, while a man aged 27 in the city got sick on February 27 and died on March 10, the National Health and Family Planning Commission said on its website. A 35-year-old woman in the eastern province of Anhui became ill on March 9 and is in critical condition, it said. All three initially suffered fever and coughs but later developed severe pneumonia and problems with breathing, according to the announcement. The three cases were confirmed Saturday to be infections with the H7N9 sub-strain after the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Preservation had separated it from body samples the day before, the commission said. The route of infection remained unknown although nothing unusual was detected among 88 people close to the victims, the commission said. The H7N9 strain had not been transmitted to humans before, it added. In a separate release, the commission said there are currently no vaccines against H7N9. China is considered one of the nations most at risk from bird flu because it has the world's biggest poultry population and many chickens in rural areas are kept close to humans. China has in the past been accused of covering up the extent of bird flu outbreaks, exacerbating fears when new cases are reported.

Description:

A further twenty new cases of measles have been reported in the Swansea region, as the outbreak of the infection continues. Last week, Public Health Wales urged parents to ensure their children had received their MMR vaccine, after revealing a total of 189 cases of measles had been diagnosed in people living in the Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board area since November. At least one school, Parkland Primary in Sketty Park, has held a clinic offering vaccinations to staff and pupils. The outbreak includes cases in 32 secondary and primary schools and nurseries. Since last Friday, a further twenty have now been reported in the Swansea and Neath Port Talbot areas, bringing the total number of cases to 209. The majority of these new cases are in the Swansea area, with a smaller number of cases reported across the Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board area.

Dr Marion Lyons, Director of Health Protection for Public Health Wales, said: "Measles is a very contagious disease that will be contracted by 90 per cent of unvaccinated people who come into contact with cases. All children who have not been fully immunised face a life-long risk of catching measles. "Many people who catch measles will have a fever, a rash and feel generally unwell. Not all of these signs and symptoms may show at once. Typically, people will be infectious from a few days before the onset of their rash until four to five days after the onset of the rash. "If your child is unwell and you suspect it is measles you should contact your GP. Your child should not attend school or nursery for four days after the rash starts. "Most people make a full recovery but there is a rare possibility of severe complications including serious eye disorders, deafness, brain damage and even death. "Measles can be prevented by use of the safe and highly effective measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. "Parents can easily protect their children by having them immunised with the MMR vaccine. After completing a two-dose course of MMR, 99 per cent of children will be protected against measles." Parents of all children aged between one and 18 who have not been fully vaccinated should contact their GP for advice and arrange vaccination as soon as possible. Vaccination is the only effective way of protecting against measles.

During a surveillance drive, 800 cases of measles were reported in different parts of Punjab, a majority of which were reported from Lahore, Punjab EPI Director Health Services Dr Tanveer Ahmed said on Tuesday. "Only one death, that of a five-year-old boy, Sohail, was reported in Gujranwala. On investigation, it was found that the boy was vaccinated but due some other reasons, he did not become immune to the disease," he said. "A majority of the patients who live in Lahore have actually migrated from Narowal, Sheikhupura and Kasur," he said. He said in a meeting of the health department, it was decided that the vaccination and surveillance drive should be escalated to control the disease. Dr Tanveer said measles vaccination was available in bulk to treat patients in all the hospitals of Lahore. However, he advised parents to get their children vaccinated to save them from the fatal disease.
