During your internet session you might have to wait a very long time for a particular site to open. You don't mind waiting as it is an important site to you. But should you keep on waiting forever? After all the webhosting server of the website might be down and no amount of waiting will do you any good. On the other hand the problem could be with your computer or with the ISP that you subscribe to and you could be able to access it from another computer. But how would you know? The programme is called LilyPond and it does this by encoding the musical notes from letters and numbers. Even a non-musician like me is able to make use of it. I just want to thank you for the very clear and simple Pinyin lesson. I wish I have found it 6 years earlier when I just started learning Mandarin. It would have saved me from a confusing discussion with a taxi driver in Beijing on the difference between "Huatang" and "Huadang".
It is interesting to note that under the Wade-Giles system of romanization, no distinction is made between j and zh, as it represents both by ch (voiceless). Similarly it makes no distinction between q and ch, representing both by ch' (voiced). From this it can be seen that even for a big part of the Chinese themselves, what are represented as two different sounds under pinyin is actually the same sound. Again I ask, why be pedantic and see differences where the Chinese themselves do not?
