The 2012 WIAC Mens and Womens Indoor Track and Field Championships conclude today at the Johnson Fieldhouse in the Sports and Fitness Center on the campus of UW-Stout.

The two-day event, which was originally scheduled to be held at UW-Superior, features student/athletes from all nine WIAC colleges.

Admission is $8.00.

MLB Milwaukee Brewers - news

Milwaukee Brewer LF Ryan Braun has been cleared of the 50-game suspension imposed by MLB for high testosterone levels, it was reported by media outlets on Thursday, the first baseball player ever allowed to play after a positive test for banned substances.

Braun tested positive for synthetic testosterone in December, (it was first reported by ESPN) but appealed the ruling to an arbitrator panel, who ruled in his favor 2-1.

He is expected to address the ruling when he reports Friday for Spring Training in Maryvale, Az., but issued this statement Thursday:

"I am very pleased and relieved by today's decision. It is the first step in restoring my good name and reputation. We were able to get through this because I am innocent and the truth is on our side. We provided complete cooperation throughout, despite the highly unusual circumstances.

"I have been an open book, willing to share details from every aspect of my life as part of this investigation, because I have nothing to hide. I have passed over 25 drug tests in my career, including at least three in the past year.

"I would like to thank my family and friends, my teammates, the Brewers organization led by Mark Attanasio, Doug Melvin, Gord Ash and Ron Roenicke, and other players around the league who have expressed their support and our great fans in Milwaukee and around the country who stuck by me and did not rush to judgment. I'd also like to offer special thanks to Michael Weiner and the Players Association for believing in me since day one and to my attorneys.

"I'd like to thank my agent Nez Balelo and Terry Prince of CAA Sports and Matthew Hiltzik of Hiltzik Strategies for all of their help and counsel through the process. This is not just about one person, but about all current and future players, and thankfully, today the process worked."

"Despite the challenges of this adversarial process, I do appreciate the professionalism demonstrated by the Panel Chair and the Office of the Commissioner."

As I said before, I've always loved and had so much respect for the game of baseball. Everything I've done in my career has been with that respect and appreciation in mind. Braun batted a career best .332 last season with 33 HRs and 111 RBIs, also taking home the leagues Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.

Green Bay Packer QB Aaron Rodgers (#12) could be in line to receive another honor (after picking up the leagues Most Valuable Player (MVP) award last season) as the Wisconsin State Assembly passed a resolution making December 12, 2012 'Aaron Rodgers Day.'

The resoution, passed unanimously, has been sent to the Wisconsin Senate for another vote.

In 2010 Rodgers led the team to the Super Bowl for the first time in fourteen years and last season was the leagues MVP after posting a 15-1 regular-season record, also establishing a new NFL record 122.5 QB rating.

Rodgers' favorite charity, the MACC fund, supporting childhood cancer cures, is having a fund-raising event "An Evening with Aaron Rodgers" on Tuesday, May 22nd at the Hyatt Regency Grand Ballroom in Milwaukee.

Special guest host/interviewer ESPN Analyst Trent Dilfer is also scheduled to appear.

WWS WIAC women's basketball player of the week

UW-Oshkosh Titan student/athlete Katie Kitzke (Jr.-South Milwaukee/WI) scored 37 points against WIAC opponents this past week and is the WWS choice for WIAC womens basketball player of the week.

On Wednesday (2/15) at the Kolf Sports Center facing UW-Whitewater the UW-O guard had a game-high 20 points, on 6-of-10 shooting from the field, but the Titans were defeated 85-50 by the Warhawks.

Kitzke recorded another game-high on Saturday (2/18) dropping in 17 points facing UW-Stout in the season finale for both schools, a 65-60 UW-Oshkosh home-loss.

This season Kitzke paced the Titans in scoring (346 points) making 103-of-243 attempts (42.4%) and 40-of-103 three point attempts (38.8%).

She also registered 78 rebounds (58 defensive) playing in all 25 contests.

Also making the grade this past week;

UW-Whitewater guard Mary Merg (So.-Greendale/WI) team-high 16 points, 3 steals, 2 assists against UW-O and 10 points at the Karges Center on Saturday (2/18), a 67-61 Warhawk road-win over UW-RF.

Merg finished 4th in the conference in scoring (334 points) averaging 13.4 points per contest.

She successfully converted 86-of-115 (74.8%) attempts at the charity stripe (ranked 10th) and averaged 2.28 assists (57) per game, 13th in the WIAC.

UW-RF forward Alise Holst (Sr.-Plainview/MN).

Holst recorded her 100oth career point on Saturday facing UW-Whitewater, on a three-point play, adding a game-high 28 points to her season total points (316) ranked 10th in the WIAC.

Holst pounded the glass for 12 rebounds in the game giving her 156 boards (97 defensive) for the season (10th WIAC).

WWS WIAC mens basketball player of the week

UW-La Crosse student/athlete Lucas Collom (Fr.-Galesville/WI) scored 30 points facing WIAC opponents this week and is the WWS choice for WIAC mens basketball player of the week.

At Mitchell Hall on Wednesday (2/15) facng UW-RF, a 74-66 Eagle win over the 19th ranked (d3hoops.com) Falcons, the UW-L forward had 10 points, on 4-of-6 shooting from the field, helping the Eagles to victory after overcoming a 28-21 first half deficit.

Collom poured in a game-high 20 points on Saturday (2/18) at Mertz Mortorelli Gym in Superior, UW-L squeeking out a 65-64 road win over the Yellowjackets, the score all knotted up 35-35 at the break.

Collom converted 3-of-4 three-point attempts and had a game-high 7 rebounds (5 defensive) in the contest, playing for 20 minutes.

This season Collom appeared in 23 games, scoring 130 total points,(averaging 5.7 points per game) successfully converting 12-of-35 three-point attmpts, 12-of-18 free throws, blocking 9 shots and recording 10 steals.

Also making the grade this week;

UW-Whitewater Warhawk forward Chris Davis (Sr.-Madison/WI) team-high 18 points in a 55-53 'Hawk road-win over UW-RF (2/15).

This season Davis paced the WIAC in scoring (529 points), rebounds (192) and free throws, making 83-of-94 attempts (.883%) leading the team to the WIAC championship with a 13-3 conference and 22-3 overall record.

Congratulations to the 2012 men's basketball WIAC champion UW-Whitewater Warhawks.

UW-Superior guard Ben Aalfs (Sr.-Hutchinson/MN) game-high 27 points facing UW-La Crosse, a 64-65 Yellowjacket home-loss.

UW-Stout guard Hank Kujak (Fr.-Blair/WI); 67-64 overtime Blue Devil road-win against powerhouse UW-Stevens Point.

Kujak hits a three-point play with 1.3 seconds remaining on the clock in OT, giving the Blue Devils a win over the 12th ranked Pointers.

UW-Stout forward Alex Oman (So.-Lake Elmo /MN) game-high 20 points against UW-SP.

UW-River Falls forward Shane Manor (Sr.-Altoona/WI) game-high 19 points on Saturday (2/18) against UW-W. Manor scored 11 points on Wednesday (2/15) in a 66-74 Falcon road-loss to UW-L.

MLB Milwaukee Brewers - news

The defending Central Division champion Milwaukee Brewers will host the World Champion St. Louis Cardinals in a three-game weekend series at Miller Park starting on on Friday, April 06, the home and season opener for Milwaukee.

Play-ball time is 3:10pm.

The Brewers had a franchise best 96-66 record last season, but were knocked out of the NL Championship Series by the Cardinals in six games, who then went on to win the World Series.

The team will be without 3-time All-Star 1b Prince Fielder, traded to Detroit, and MVP LF Ryan Braun is questionable for the opening game, still appealing a suspension by MLB's Joint Drug Prevention/Treatment Program.

The 50-game suspension is unlikely to be over-turned, as reported by the Sporting News on Thursday (2/16).

Braun, the first Milwaukee player to win an MVP award since Robin Yount in 1989, will accept his MVP award at the annual awards dinner of the Baseball Writers' Association of America on Saturday in New York.

Former Chicago Cub, 2-time All-Star (05-08) Aramis Ramirez is playing 3b and will take the clean-up spot in the batting line-up, replacing Fielder.

Ramirez (1998-2011) had 173 hits last season, only 8 hits shy of his career best (181-1991), with 26 HRs, playing in 148 games, a solid addition to the club.

Granted Ramirez's HR production is not what it was in his prime (38-2006) but its obvious the slugger still has some gas left in the tank despite his 14 years of service.

Matt Gamel (2008- present) is getting the nod at first base, batting .241 with 5 HRs and 23 RBIs in 85 career contests.

A great opportunity for the prospect to make a name for himself.

The Brewers starting pitching rotation remains unchanged and the bullpen appears solid with set-up man Francisco Rodriguez and closer John Axford (1.96 ERA -2011) both returning.

Rodriguez had a 2.64 ERA last season playing a split-season for the New York Mets and Milw.

Gonzalez, a 1999 All-Star game electee, batted .241 and racked up 141 hits last season, playing for the Cincinnati Reds.

Rickie Weeks is returning to second base, after undergoing successful ankle surgery, expect big things from the slugger, who early in the season last year(before being injured July 9) had 71 runs batted in and 19 HRs, ranked second in the league.

Milwaukee ends the winter season on Wednesday, April 04 with a game against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field; game time is 3;05 pm.

UW-Superior Yellowjacket student/athlete Connie Urmanski (Jr.-Edgar/WI) is the WWS choice for Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) women's basketball player of the week.

Urmanski recorded a game-high 26 points in a tight 64-62 Yellowjacket home-loss to powerhouse UW-River Falls at Mertz Mortorelli Gym on Wednesday (2/8).

The Superior guard converted 8-of-13 shots from the field and 6-of-9 attempts from the distance, adding to her season total points (271) ranked 13th in the conference.

The Yellowjackets and 21st ranked (d3hoops.com) Falcons were tied at 29-29 starting second period action, but Superior came up short in the final seconds of the game, the team closing to within two points with 44 ticks remaining, failing to convert a basket that would have knotted the contest.

On Saturday (2/11) Urmanski registered a pair of three point plays and had 1 assist (8 points) in a 69-50 loss to UW-Whitewater.

Urmanski currently paces the WIAC in 3-point conversions, successfully making 23-of 50 attempts and is second in the conference in minutes played (793) averaging 34.48.

UW-EC Blugolds center Ellen Plendl (#51 Sr.-Chippewa Falls/WI) game-high 18 points, 11 rebounds facing UW-Stout on Saturday (2/11).

Plendl is ranked 9th in the conference in scoring (286) averaging 12.4 points per game and is currently second in the WIAC in rebounding (247) with 163 defensive boards.

UW-Platteville Pioneer forward Jake Manning (Fr.-Cedar Rapids/IA) is the WWS choice for Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) mens basketball player of the week.

Manning poured in 21 points, and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, in a 70-63 Pioneer road-win over UW-La Crosse at Mitchell Hall on Saturday (2/11).

The Pioneer forward converted 9-of-13 shots from the field and 3-of-4 attempts from the free throw line helping the team sweep the season series against the Eagles.

On Wednesday (2/08) facing UW-Whitewater at Bo Ryan Court Manning recorded 10 points in a disappointing 77-58 Pioneer loss to the Warhawks.

WWS WIAC womens basketball player of the week

UW-La Crosse Eagle student/athlete Kassie Robinson (Sr.-Inver Grove Heights/MN) is the WWS choice for womens basketball player of the week.

Facing UW-Whitewater on Wednesday (2/1) Robinson scored a game-high 21 points, in a disappointing 61-71 Eagle loss to the Warhawks, padding her conference total (304 points) ranked #1 in the WIAC.

On Saturday (2/4) Robinson poured in a game-high 36 points, on 10-of-18 shooting from the field, in a 79-69 Eagles road-loss to perennial WIAC powerhouse UW-SP at Berg Gym.

The 36 points recorded tied a UW-L school record set by Jill Murray (12/2000).

The UW-L center successfully converted 16-of-20 free throws in the contest, her 116 attempts this season pacing the conference, with 85 points scored from the charity stripe (.733%).

The 16 free throws made also set a new school record, eclipsing the old mark (13) set in 2008.

Robinson is ranked 8th in the WIAC in rebounding, averaging 6.6 boards per game, with 132 total rebounds (90 defensive) this season.

Also making the grade this week;

UW-SP Pointer guard Sam Barber (Jr.-Schofield/WI) team-high 34 points on 11-of-15 shooting from the field, including four 3-point plays and 8-of-8 free throws, in the 79-69 Pointer win over UW-L.

Barber is currently ranked 2nd in the WIAC in scoring, averaging 14.2 points per game, with 299 points recorded this season.

She is also 12th in the conference in rebounding (121) averaging 5.8 boards per game.

UW-RF center Maranda Dohrn (Sr.-Lake City /MN) WIAC leading rebounder (233) averaging 11.1 boards per contest.

Dohrn had 11 rebounds facing UWEC (2/4) a thrilling 60-59 Falcon road-win at the Zorn Arena.

UW-RF Falcon guard Tiffany Gregorich (Sr.-Altoona/WI) game-high 21 points (2/4) in the Falcon win over the Blugolds.

UW-Oshkosh Titan guard Megan Wenig (Jr.-Oshkosh/WI) team-high 11 points in a closely played 52-53 UW-O road-loss against UW-Superior (2/4).

The Titans had a chance to win the contest in the closing seconds but failed to convert the game-winning basket from inside the paint, that would have given the team their second conference win.

UW-Stevens Point student/athlete Dan Tillema (Sr.-Randolph/WI) scored 49 points facing WIAC opponents and is the WWS choice for WIAC mens basketball player of the week

In a 54-70 UWSP win over UW-Platteville, at Bennett Court on Wednesday (2/1), Tillema added 25 points to his season totals (369) ranked 4th in the conference, converting 11-of-21 shots from the field, aiding the defending WIAC Champion Pointers to their 17th season win.

He also had 7 rebounds (5 defensive) 2 assists, 1 blocked shot and 2 steals in the contest

On Saturday (2/4) Tillema registered a double-double, pouring in 24 points and pounding the glass for 14 rebounds in a 76-60 Pointer win over visiting UW-La Crosse, sending the Eagles to their seventh conference loss.

The Pointer forward shot 3-of-6 from 3-point range, successfully converting 9-of-10 free throws, and also recorded 2 assists and 3 steals in the game.

Tillema has 131 rebounds this season (110 defensive - 5th) and his 56 assists rank him 12th in the WIAC.

Also making the grade this week;

UW-Whitewater forward Chris Davis (Sr.-Madison/WI) game-high 27 points facing UW-La Crosse (2/1), a 72-62 Warhawk road win at Mitchell Hall.

Davis is leading the WIAC in scoring, averaging 23.8 points per game.

Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers won the NFL's Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in a landslide on Saturday (2/4), receiving 48 out of a possible 50 votes.

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees nabbed the other two votes.

Rodgers set an NFL record with a 122.5 passer rating, leading the Packers to a 15-1 regular-season record.

He sat out the last regular-season contest against the Detroit Lions, but still managed to throw for 4,643 yards and 45 touchdowns, second best in the league.

NFC-North QB Matt Stafford (Detroit) grabbed the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award, passng for over 5,000 yards and 41 Tds this season, playing in all 16 games.

The 41 Tds is a Lions single season record.
