The division of Rubaga holds sports activities/events in the first and second term of the year. There, all schools engage and participate in events with the aim of developing the children’s talents and skills in addition to academics. They also aim at selecting a skilled team from various schools to compete in the other levels like the zonal level, division level, district and national level.

The activities that they are engaged in are athletics, football for both girls and boys, netball, volleyball among others. During the first term, Rubaga zone organized athletics, which were held on the 18th March 2010. Many different schools within Rubaga always practice for that Sports day to come. After that completion, a team, which will be selected will proceed to the next level (division level) and thereby a final team to represent the division will also be chosen.

This term, we participated in athletics, throws, discuss and javelin. However, during the second term we engage in football, netball and volleyball. So the children are practiced daily to look fit for at the competition. The best students are awarded in form of certificates, sponsorships and scholarships as well as trophies.

Athletics competitions held on 18th March 2010 at Nabagereka Primary School

The competitions comprised of only five schools of which our school was among. This was a low attendance and it was assumed that some schools were under fear due to the then saga of the Kasubi tombs fire, which affected the arrangements.

We engaged in activities like athletics, which comprised of several different distances and also field events like short put. However, some events were not carried out such as javelin, discuss, throwing due to lack of equipments as well as the limited funds to facilitate the competition.

Rubaga Community School emerged the first in short put for both the girls and boys, 400 races, 100 m races and therefore some of our students were selected to represent Rubaga zone to the next level competitions which took place on 23rd March 2010 at Wankuluku stadium.

We are very happy and excited to announce that we have received a donation form Rubaga Friends to build a kindergarten! The construction has been going on for about a month and it is going very well. It is going to be a 2 plan building with 4 class rooms, 4 toilets, a kitchen and a little office. So far, the first floor has almost been completed. We expect to have the kindergarten all done by June and we look very much forward to opening the doors to the little new members of Rubaga Community School in July. It will be able to house around 50 children.

Some of the Rubaga Friends members are planning to visit us in July which we look forward to – we welcome them with open arms!

A group called Rubaga Friends has been raising money for the past few years to help kids in Kampala, Uganda with the ultimate goal being a new kindergarten; a goal they have almost reached.

For some it was a trip to Uganda that got them involved, but for others, all it took was a brochure full of pictures.

Ardis Grob is one of the Rubaga Friends Board Members. While looking through the brochure she said, “Just look at all those happy faces.” She said that’s what got her hooked.

At the current school, 280 kids have to cram in everyday. Board Member David Flieger said, “All the kids come out there at recess and pack into a 35 by 50 ft space and that’s where all recreation has to take place so it’s a really bad situation.”

But the group said it’s much more than just an inconvenience. Board Member Jorgen Mortensen said, “The ministry has demanded it with a threat of closing the whole school down.”

Something the group said would be a disaster. Flieger said, “They have to be in school. Either that or they have no life. Of course education is everything in terms of future prospects for improvement of the country and the individuals.”

Because of the hard work by this group and one major donation, the school will soon be a reality, but this group said its work is far from over.

That continued work will help give African children a chance to begin or continue their schooling in a positive environment; something as Americans we often take for granted.

At 5am 11th October we sadly lost a dear friend of ours due to illness. Kate Namalwa had worked at Rubaga Community School as an assistant matron and as a cook since 2000(X). As an assistant matron, she took care of the orphans at the school and they naturally saw her as their mother because they were so attached to her. The loss for them, and her 2 children she left behind, is tremendous, but together we will get through it.

Kate Namalwa has lived at the school the past four years since she divorced her husband. She leaves 2 daughters behind aged 15 and 9 who attend the school.

Kate contributed with a lot to the school. She used to go to the market to buy food, washed the clothes for the young ones and basically taught the orphans the daily housework one would be taught at home. She was a very good worker, colleague, friend and mother and she will always be remembered for that.

Kate Namalwa will be dearly, dearly missed by us all. May her soul rest in eternal peace.

Dear All,

Allow me to take this opportunity to inform you about the situation at the school, and what we have gone through the last three days here in Kampala and the suburbs. Some of you have seen the news about the situation in central Uganda on BBC or CCN and others may not have.

Well, it started as a small thing but ended up in chaos, which has left 14 people dead and more than a hundred in hospitals. The whole issue was that our King, the King of Buganda was not allowed to visit his people in Bugerere to celebrate with them the youth day. The whole issue again is a political issue, which I will not go deep in, in this mail but I guess most of you know a bit about the Ugandan politics.

These riots have affected our school as well, as two people were killed at Nalukolong, a small shopping center after you turn off to our school. A bus was also stopped there and burnt, and a police station in our area of Natete was also burnt down. It was very bad. Police were shooting everywhere in an attempt to keep people away and we were very worried for the children who were attending secondary school in the city but thanks God they all came back home safely.

I should inform you that thugs took advantage of the happenings and entered the office and stole the safe with some money as well as two computers; one of them a new one which had been bought by Rubaga Friends to replace the one which broke down. They took some books, blankets, which belong to the children and other items. Nobody was injured but most children and staff members were shocked so counseling was provided by some of the teachers.

Well, Rubaga community lives on, there are always good times and bad times as part of life. We are not resuming classes next week as planned until we are sure that the situation in Kampala is under control.

On behalf of Rubaga Community School I would like to thank you once more for all the help towards Rubaga Community School.

I should also inform you that I finished my studies at the university in May, I am waiting for graduation. At the moment I am assisting in the office at school I have been teaching computer during my studies.

Thanks for all the assistance towards the school, you have made us what we are today.

Regards Wamala

The lack of reliable Internet has always been a nuisance and complication meet by many businesses and organizations in Africa. Just as an ordinary infrastructure the online infrastructure is invaluable for a country trying to progress with modern communications.

For that reason we are excited that SEACOM recently announced that the 17,000-kilometer (10,625-mile) fiber cable for east Africa is now open for business. This will allow local ISPS here in Uganda to provide faster and more stable connections to private consumers and businesses.

As we here at the school are in the midst of finding our online identity we are very excited about this development. We feel like we are part of a revolution. We love to hear what you think this change will bring to Africa – when do you think the ordinary African citizen will see the fruits of this effort?

Many visitors might wonder why we have got a website. Is it really necessary for a school like ours to have an online presence? Perhaps it isn’t but we suspect it will help us a great deal. So lets take a look at the factors that led us to start a website.

First of all it is a mater of convenience. Our recourses are very limited and for that reason we need to spend our time wisely. Over the years we have found ourselves spending a lot of time fundraising and relaying information about the school to people interested in our effort. We are so happy for this great interest, but at the same time it taps into our resources. This is where the website comes into play.

We hope that the website will help us streamline the information flow from the school to our donators and everyone else with an interest in the school. Ultimately this will free up resources for other tasks at the school. We hope you all approve of this decision.

Who paid for all this?

It is important to point out that none of the schools funds have been or will be used for running the website or any of our online efforts. All of this have been developed and donated to us by Thomas Fals and together with Lise Andersen he will take care of the maintenance.

We have made sure you can stay up to date with news from the school in several ways. We now have a twitterfeed, facebook page, rss-feed and a newsletter. Please sign up or follow us. Spread the word:)
