Welcome to the RUDDERFISH podcast. It’s a reflection of the experiences I have been through as an athlete and consultant. Having competed International for over 17 years now in Rowing I have come to realise there is still much to learn and enjoy. High performance and teamwork are at the heart of rowing and here to to translate an elite sporting experience into a format to share the various elements of how to improve performance. Some of it can be a bit random and raw but I have attempted to express the reality of human performance with the range of thoughts, feelings, emotions, frustrations, disappointments and aspirations.

From the story it related to the British eight in 2000 when they won gold. Personally I have used it many times since and have presented on it in workshops too. It’s a great focus which brings clarity and cuts through many of the potential distractions from what will produce the most pure of performance. If it isn’t going to make the boat go faster then why do it?<div class="feedflare">

What I have been curious about is the sense of energy you have at the start of an effort and how as fatigue and the various thoughts and feelings associated with being able to sustain the effort once the initial phase transitions into the work required to maintain the output. It’s about the fine line better what is optimal verse over reaching or under performing. High intensities over time require not only physical capacity but mental and emotion resilience and super focus.<div class="feedflare">

Wow what a reality check. It was easy to forget the intensity and effort required to do a 2km ergo at full tilt. Interesting to note full tilt efforts are always different and relate to what level of preparation has been achieved. This was very much early days and so it was like a slap in the face and a wake up call about how hard this sport is and how challenge ergo’s are.<div class="feedflare">
