“It was an amazing experience,” Peiper said. “I saw many things I’d never seen before. It took me 30 minutes to realize that the ‘abandoned’ buildings along the road actually were inhabited. They were often smaller than a garage, single-storied, and made of decaying concrete, rotting wood and corrugated steel.”

Last fall, RuffaloCODY Vice President of Planned Giving Services, Timothy D. Logan, ACFRE presented to the National Partnership for Philanthropic Planning conference in Washington D.C. with James Preston, D. Min., Senior Director of Development, Office of Gift Planning at University of Columbia, Missouri and RuffaloCODY Planned Giving Services client. Their presentation, ‘Phoning It In-Prospecting for Planned Giving Leads by Phone’ presented case studies and facilitated a broad discussion abou best practices for using telemarketing with Planned Giving. Their presentation was well received and subsequently was the subject of an article in Planned Giving Today (January 2010).

Timing was an important factor in RuffaloCODY’s location decision.

Collaboration between Priority One, the City of Cedar Rapids, and the Iowa Department of Economic Development ensured the project avoided any unnecessary roadblocks.

“We knew this was going to be a fast-track project,” said Mark Seckman, president of Priority One. “Our close working relationship with both the City and IDED helped us keep the process streamlined and meet critical deadlines. Our partners at the city and state level were critical to this project’s success.”

“We’re very pleased to see a company that began in Cedar Rapids continues to grow in our community,” said Cedar Rapids Mayor Kay Halloran.

Priority One assisted Ruffalo by drafting and submitting applications for financial assistance from the city and the state. Last week, the city approved a matching grant for this project, and this morning, the IDED board approved funding through the Grow Iowa Values Financial Assistance Program. RuffaloCODY also plans to utilize the Iowa Industrial New Jobs Training program through Kirkwood Community College.

The 2009 Inc. 5000 list measured revenue growth from 2005 through 2008. To qualify, companies must be U.S.-based and privately held, for profit, independent “not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies“ as of December 31, 2007, and have had at least $200,000 in revenue in 2005, and $2 million in 2008.

Despite the ongoing recession, aggregate revenue among the companies on the Inc. 5000 list actually increased to $214 billion, up $29 billion from last year, with a median three-year growth rate of 126 percent. The Inc. 5000 are responsible for creating more than one million jobs since their founding, making the list perhaps the best example of the impact private, fast-growing companies can have on the economy.
