Remember this gorgeous Vintage Americana engagement session that photographer Shannon Nicole Smith sent over a few months ago? Well, she shot the cutest wedding concept titled “Sew In Love” and sent it over to share with you all. The spring color palette is cheery with lots of DIY ideas and vintage elements, such as the depression glass vases and vintage tablecloth. I also love bright cardigans on brides! Entry #3: DIY Moss and Milk Glass Centerpieces

Our next DIY project is by Christina, who you may remember from this Vintage Milk Glass and Moss Centerpieces post from a little while ago. Today she shares how to make them, and you are welcome to peruse the instructions to create your own (just not for resell). Speaking of vintage milk glass vases, if you have milk glass vases that you would like to sell, please list them in our classifieds section for vintage brides!

Now, onto the project:

What you’ll need: (clockwise from photo above)

- upcycled milk glass pedestals in all different sizes. Mix it up with different shapes like low bowls and even milk glass ashtrays. I would advise a grouping of 3 or more different sizes for a better looking tablescape.
- hot glue gun (a high temp) and lots of glue sticks
- knife
- floral pins (can be found here)
- floral foam (for dried flowers not oasis, can be found here)
- preserved moss (shown: reindeer moss, mood moss and sheet moss)

Step 1: Using a knife, cut the floral foam to fit snuggly in the milk glass. Using your glue gun, generously glue the foam into the glass (pic 2). For added height cut a smaller square out of the foam and glue it on top. Shave all of the corners of the foam off. (pic3)

Step 2: Using either mood moss (as shown) or sheet moss, make three clusters that meet together at the top. Hot glue them down and tuck and hide floral pins into them for added security.

Step 3: Fill in the vacant areas with clusters of reindeer moss. Start at the bottom lip of the glass and layer and glue the moss with the best shaped moss on the outside. The reindeer moss comes in all different shapes and sizes so experiment and piece them together like a puzzle.

Step 4: Check to make sure all moss is securely fastened. If loose, re-glue in needed areas and cover with tiny bits of moss. Make sure there are no dried glue drips or strings on your finished product!

Wonderful for a vintage woodland wedding, these centerpieces can be made months and months ahead of time. Just keep them out of direct sunlight and mist the reindeer moss occasionally to keep it soft.

We’re starting this week with a vintage inspired wedding with lots of handmade details, all the way from Wellington, South Africa. The bride, Carla, shares a little bit about their wedding day below…

The bride, Carla, shares a little bit about their wedding:
I bought my bridesmaids’ dresses and then put lace and ribbon on to personalize them. I also had everyone in the bridal party (parents,brothers,sisters, best men and bridesmaids) have similar colors of grey, mint green, blue and purple). A corsage was made for each of them to wear and the similar colors made the pictures beautiful!

I had a friend of my mother do the flowers. She is a professional and LOVES flowers. I went with her to the florist and together we chose colours and flowers that I liked. We collected lamp covers over the months and decorated them. Lucia (Flowers & Decor) took old books and wrapped them up with ribbon. She then placed the lamp covers on top. Different vases were placed on the tables with not one table looking the same. She placed big and small together. The extra detail was baby pictures of me and my husband in golden picture frames.

We decided on a theme that would be me and my husband together. I love vintage, but with a hint of the unique, so we had sepia styled photos made and put them in golden frames on the tables. What helped me a lot was to go to the fabric shops and buy samples of different kinds and colours of materials. That way I could see what textures and colors would work together.

We made the the napkin rings ourselves. I grew up on a farm so our neighbors made the flowers with our wedding colors and my mom and I tied them with a ribbon. For each guest we made a fabric heart as a gift that also doubled as a place card. My wonderful bridesmaids helped me put on the different kinds of ribbon and lace with a button. It was great fun and extra special because it was handmade with love. Each of our tables had a wrought iron centerpiece with a crown or a heart on top. Each table had different ribbons hanging from the centerpiece. I wanted to do the table placements a bit different, so I made a card with each guest’s name on it, together with a color ribbon, a button and a pearl pin of the table they were seated at. I made a clothesline from the one chair to the other chair. The chairs without seats resembled a question that asked “Where is my seat?” so guests could look for their names and in that order find their place inside.

We had the wedding ceremony at a church in Franschhoek. The same church where my great-grandmother, grandmother and mother got married. When the service was finished the guests had to drive about 40 minutes to the venue (www.kleinevalleij.co.za). For a little road side snack, my bridemaids and I baked heart shaped shortbread cookies and we packed them in a cellophane bag, we then had a little business card made with the story about why we got married at this specific church. Our wedding car a 1947 Chrysler was also the wedding car of my husband’s grandparents. We also put that story on the card. As the guests left the ceremony they each got a packet of cookies and a cold bottle of water. So as they were driving they could have a bite and read the story.

Happy Camper

I wanted to leave you with something fun for the weekend! I spotted these vintage VW campers over at one of my favorite blogs, Please sir, and I had to share with my vintage brides. Snail Trail is a company based out of London that rents vintage campers, trailers and even this adorable red Fiat 500 available for special occasions and photoshoots. The first thing that came to mind was how fun it would it be to rent one of these cuties for a bachelorette party? Though the caravans have quite literally a little more mileage than the VW campers and are mostly available for photoshoots only, the VW campers are perfect for road trips. Each camper has their own name and quirky personality, and seats 4-5 people.

Entry #2: DIY Window Pane Menu

Continuing with our DIY Contest is Alyssa, who made this rustic wedding menu using an old window. The theme of our contest is “Found Tucked Away and Used Today”, where participants must incorporate an old item in a do-it-yourself project. The winner will receive $500, and the second place winner a $100 gift certificate to Wendy Mink Jewelry!

Now, onto the project:

What you’ll need:

- old window pane
- chalkboard paint
- painters tape
- white paint and crackle paint
- sandpaper
All painting materials can be purchased at your local hardware store.

Instructions:

Step 1: Wash down the window pane making sure the glass is completely clean. Then tape every nook and cranny to make sure no paint gets on the window frame. Give three coats of chalkboard paint. Let the window dry for 24 hours and slowly remove the tape to make sure not to pull the paint off the windows.

Step 2: Paint the frame with crackle paint and let that coat dry for 30 min. Then paint with white acrylic paint on top of the prior coat. Allow it to dry for one hour. After it dries, look over where the paint crackled the most and make a mental note not to sand there.

Step 3: Sand the frame with rough grit sandpaper. Then use a finer grain sandpaper to get a genuine weathered look.

Sweet Vintage Elopement

I love sharing elopements on the blog, as you may remember this City Hall wedding in San Francisco and this elopement in New York City. Melissa and Ron eloped and immediately after went back home to take some photos together. Junkyard Engagement Session

This adorable junkyard engagement session landed in my inbox a few days ago then yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting the lovely ladies April and Lindsey from Sweet Monday Photography. They were telling me that bride’s cousin owns this junkyard/old car shop since he’s an artist and uses scrap metal for sculptures but some of these vintage cars are just too sweet to be upcycled! The junkyard location has also been used for concerts before. Ah, stylish and hip Los Angeles, how I miss thee.
