Wondering how to get your followers to respond to your tweets? It may not be as hard as you think. With a few tweaks, you can increase your click-through rates substantially.

The clickthrough rate (CTR) equates to the number of clicks on a link divided by the number of followers. The higher the clicks, the higher your CTR.

As a former chemist, I like to see the results of scientific data instead of relying on word of mouth predictions that are shaky at best. Since entering the world of internet marketing and content writing, while I appreciate the myriad of opinions, I value some scientific data to back them up. You can take the scientist out of the lab, but you can’t take the lab out of the scientist.

Dan Zarrella, cleverly named “The Social Media Scientist”, has taken the guesswork out of social media and applied the scientific method to his testing. He tests metrics and releases the results via colorful infographics.

His recent test measured tweet CTRs which revealed some interesting trends. He analyzed more than 200,000 tweets and presented the information graphically. Here is a summary of what he found:

Length of Tweets

While Twitter allows140 characters per tweet, the ideal tweet will contain fewer characters. Dan found that the highest CTRs occurred with tweets containing between 120 – 130 characters.

It can be hard to compose sound bytes of valuable information in 140 characters, never mind 120. Thankfully, the short tweets (<100 characters) were less successful so you can hold off on chopping your tweets for now.

Don’t use this as a hard-fast rule. If you have something groundbreaking to say in less than 120 tweets, then by all means do it. Use these points as guidelines.

Links

Dan analyzed whether link placement affected CTRs. His data shows the highest impact when links are placed 25% of the way through the tweet.

This data seems to coincide with normal internet user habits. Attention spans are nonexistent for internet users and links placed at the end may not make the grade.

Does this mean that a link should accompany every tweet? Definitely not. In fact, Dan tested this (see next image). Play around with the links in your tweets and notice your CTRs when you change their position.

Dan also found that the number of links can affect CTRs.

Word Use

Tweets containing the words or symbols “via”, “@”, “RT”, “please”, and “check” enjoyed higher CTRs than tweets void of the same words. Tweets containing the words “@AddThis”, “@GetGlue”, and “Marketing” performed worse than tweets void of the same words.

Amazingly, some words increased CTRs by more than double and triple.

The new automatic “re-tweet” button makes it easier to re-tweet, but it excludes the letters “RT”. Re-tweet the traditional way or share the content with @via and the originator’s name and see if you notice any increase in engagement.

Paper.li

Paper.li is an online content aggregation system. Daily posts include the words, “daily is out.” Dan found these words to have the greatest positive effect on CTR—more than all of the other words he tested.

I have not used Paper.li but would be interested to hear if anyone has noticed an increase in CTR as a result. Please post in the comments below if you are using it.

Verbs and Adverbs

Time to dust off the cobwebs and go back to 3rd grade English. Tweets with adverbs and verbs garnered higher CTRs.

What is an adverb? Remember when your teacher told you that any word ending in”ly” is an adverb? Use colorful adverbs before your verbs to give them emphasis. Consider these two statements:

#1 – Businesses are becoming more aware of the benefits of internet marketing

#2 – Businesses are progressively becoming more aware of the benefits of internet marketing

Statement #2 adds a little more personality and intrigue. Try it and see how it works for you.

Tip: Tell your audience what to do with your verbs…”Take a look” at this article, or “Check out” this article.

Tweet Times

When is the ideal time to tweet? Dan found Friday, Saturday and Sunday to be the ideal times to tweet. Also, tweets posted later in the day enjoyed higher CTRs than tweets posted earlier.

This data is a general guideline. Test your tweets to determine the best time for your specific target audience. This data may work for the masses, but if your audience is stay-at-home mothers or night shift workers, you can see where this may need to be altered.

The Bottom Line

This data is certainly helpful, but each business will need to discover its own unique formula. CTRs are not the only measurable data points. Some stats cannot be measured, like what tweet caused someone to search for your name in Google or what post struck a chord with a potential lead who did not click a link. Not every tweet will contain a link and some may move a lead one step closer to working with you regardless of whether he/she took a measurable action.

Can you think of any more data points that would be helpful to measure?

When Facebook offered a glimpse at its new Timeline user interface back in September of 2011 during its fourth annual F8 Convention, many attendees were struck with awe. Developers and entrepreneurs at the conference welcomed the radical makeover, and tech journalists raved about it in the days to come. The official launch of Timeline for all Facebook users began in earnest just before the end of 2011, and about a month later the prominent online social network warn its members that Timeline would be the new de facto layout and user interface.

The initial enthusiasm surrounding Timeline last year began to fade in opinion polls as soon as Facebook announced that the change was non-negotiable. Early adopters weren’t fazed by the seemingly stern notice on January 24th advising members that once the mandatory Timeline is activated as part of their profile, they will have seven days to preview it. It is within this window that members will be able to add, hide or modify information and media before anyone else visits their profile and sees it.
Once the mandatory announcement was made, the original love given to Timeline quickly began to fade among the 800 million Facebook members. Tech media sites that conducted online polls and surveys to gauge the sentiment just a week after the announcement found that only about half of those surveyed had adopted Timeline, most weren’t thrilled with it and in fact wished that it remained optional. Some members cited privacy concerns, while others simply did not enjoy the way old information is organized and displayed by Timeline.

As Facebook gets ready for its debut on Wall Street, the company is moving forward with Timeline as its new user interface. For those of you who feel uncomfortable with this paradigm change, there is solace to be found in the following ten tips that help users manage how their profile and information will appear to the rest of the world:

1 – Privacy:
If you are concerned about strangers and other people outside your social network looking into our Timeline, you should click on the “Limit Audience for Old Posts” option located in the privacy settings page and follow the steps to manage and limit the visibility of past posts.

2 – Subscribers Instead of Friends:
You don’t have to be Facebook friends with everyone, and you don’t need to be buried underneath a deluge of friend requests. You can now allow people to subscribe to your activity feed and you can determine just how much they can see on the subscriber tab of Timeline settings.

3 – Hide Information:
Timeline organizes your information in a way that’s intuitive and efficient, meaning that it’s now easier than ever for someone to dig into your past and find embarrassing or incriminating information to share across different social media platforms. You can prevent this from happening by simply clicking on the pencil icon that appears next to each Timeline item and hide it.

4 – Highlight Your Photos:
In an era when even cheap cell phones have high resolution cameras and free photo editing applications are easy to obtain, it is almost inexcusable to have a poor picture as the main Timeline photo. If you can’t spend too much time with your photos, check out the different Facebook apps available for Timeline customization.

5 – Geotagging:
The Timeline world map does not only show where you are at any given time, it also lets you tag photos geographically in retrospect. If you have pictures of different places you have visited over the years, Timeline allows you to organize them chronologically on the map.

6 – Isolate Your Timeline:
This is by far the most stringent privacy feature of Timeline. It is found within the privacy settings and it allows members to selectively block their profiles by simply entering the names specific members.

7 – Control Your Activity Log:
Since Timeline makes it easy for the world to know what you are up to at any given time, it is important to control the items that can be displayed and shared across the Timelines of your friends. The new activity log options allows you to label items that are spam, remove them entirely, or even disassociating yourself from any discussions, photos, posts, or videos in which you have been tagged.

8 – New Full Size Video Option:
Videos can be highlighted in the new Timeline whether they have been uploaded or shared by others; all it takes is a simple click of the star that appears next to video to bring up the resizing options. Once the size of the video has been adjusted, it will remain that way until changed again. This is a great option for brick-and-mortar businesses that wish to play up their goods, services or their storefront.

9 – Change Cover Photos Anytime:
If you are a person on the go for reasons of travel or leisure, it is always a great idea to visually update your status with a photo. The new Timeline allows you to easily change your photo from a mobile device by loading the Facebook app and clicking on the cover photo icon. This will in turn activate your device’s camera and allow you to take the desired cover photo for immediate upload.

10 – Eliminate Clutter:
The new Timeline is very keen on sharing and displaying real-time feeds anywhere you may be within the site. The ticker on the upper right and the chat window on the lower right form a sidebar that can be distracting, but it can be easily hidden by clicking the button located near the bottom right corner of the web page.

10 Social Networks for Business

Social networks for business are now essential for companies to stay competitive. As the use of the mobile Internet grows, people are online more than ever as they can connect from any location with Wi-Fi, or 3G/4G access.

Business social networks can help companies reach out to new customers and to keep in contact with existing ones. Many companies use social media for customer support and for gauging reaction to newly introduced products.

Here is our list of the 10 best social business networks.

1. Facebook

Although not specifically focused on business users, Facebook is the world’s largest social website. Almost all large corporations have a presence on Facebook and many companies have multiple pages on this platform. The idea on Facebook is to interact regularly with your community of friends to include existing customers and people interested in your company.

2. Twitter

Twitter is also not specific for business use, but it is too big for companies to ignore. Twitter differs from Facebook in that the format only allows short status updates similar to those used for texting. For this reason, Twitter is popular with young people that grew up with texting. Many celebrities use Twitter to reach out to fans and companies are increasingly turning to the site for customer and technical support.

3. LinkedIn

This site is specifically for business people and professionals. LinkedIn is a perfect platform for companies looking to hire new employees and contractors or to find partners and investors. The platform is less appropriate for outreach to customers or potential customers unless you have a business-to-business organization.

4. YouTube

The video hosting website offers companies a great vehicle for offering multimedia productions in video format. For example, you could produce videos that highlight products or that demonstrate how to use products. YouTube provides businesses with a free platform for publishing TV-like advertisements. However, for your videos to get watched, you will need to expand your social network so people can find your links.

5. Flickr

Flickr is a photo hosting website that allows you to upload pictures of your products, business property, employees, events, etc. You can best employ this website together with other platforms on your business social network list like Twitter.

6. StartupNation

Startups can use this website to connect with other entrepreneurs that are launching new businesses. The site offers many services including seminars, podcasts, blogs, forums and articles focused on the subject of starting up a business. The site also offers competitions that act as incubators for new business ideas.

7. PartnerUp

As the name implies, this platform is for the business social network list of those looking for new partners. Whether you are seeking new investors or contractors to help with specific jobs, this network allows you to specifically ask others for the services or resources that you need. Users can also offer advice on how to find new partners and investors. PartnerUp is more for small and medium-sized businesses and they have a Resource Directory for placing ads and RFPs.

8. Klout

The Klout website is more about measuring your social influence online, but it also has direct social networking functions. As a Klout member, you can discover the reach of your social marketing campaigns along with the influence of your social community. This is a great way to see whether your efforts are working although it does not offer any method for measuring ROI in dollar terms. You can increase your social clout by interacting with other Klout users including providing recommendations for others based on their fields of expertise. The idea is to get friends in your network to reciprocate and recommend you as well.

9. Amazon’s Mechanical Turk

Mechanical Turk is a crowd-sourcing social platform. Many business social networks cater specifically to other businesses and professionals looking for services. At Mechanical Turk, you can find people offering to perform a wide range of tasks for a fee. Amazon takes a 10 percent commission on all transactions.

10. Google+

In the future, Google+ may rank higher on the list of the best social business networks, but for now, people are still watching the new platform. Google has tried many times before to break into social media in a big way, but with limited success. The new site is very much like Facebook, but it offers ways to group friends into different “Circles” for easier management and interaction.

With this list of social networks for business, you will be well on your way to establishing a strong social presence on the Internet. Remember that effective social networking requires that you interact with your online community on a regular basis. Stale social media pages become practically useless. By providing your friends, fans and other community members with regular updates and content they will come to look for news from you consistently.

Learn how to post information on your products or services, or just any news that pertains to your business. For example, a sporting goods store could post interesting news articles from the sports world so that friends come to expect such stories.

Joomla Shopping Cart Extensions Compared and Reviewed

Several shopping cart extensions are available to turn a Joomla site into an ecommerce site. No need to use a shopping cart package that is not integrated with the Joomla platform. Many of these shopping cart extensions are available as open source software, and most are easily deployed to the Joomla Site. This Joomla shopping cart comparison will take a look at five of the most popular Joomla shopping cart extensions and provide the potential user with enough information to make an informed decision regarding the shopping cart that best suits their needs.

A Joomla shopping cart package provides a Joomla shopping cart template that is styled with the existing Joomla theme. To perform a Joomla shopping cart review, the five popular shopping carts are examined to determine their best features, as well as those factors that may be lacking in the Joomla shopping cart package. The best Joomla shopping cart is really determined by the needs of the site. With enough information, however, the site administrator may be able to select the best Joomla shopping cart for their particular site and customer base.

Joomla Shopping Cart Review

Simple Caddy (link)

Simple Caddy is perhaps the most popular open source Joomla shopping cart. This very powerful extension allows the administrator to easily deploy the extension and create an online store within minutes. Simple to use and understand, Simple Caddy utilizes the theme and format of the existing Joomla platform. No need to re-apply the theme to the shopping cart pages. This extension is very straightforward to use and easy to administer, and the administrator is able to set up the extension to automatically deposit funds generated from the store directly into a Paypal account. The main advantage of Simple Caddy is that this is the extension that is optimal for Joomla site administrators that want to sell only a few products on their site. Simple Caddy provides ecommerce functionality for selling a few items, without the need to deploy a full featured ecommerce extension and setting up an entire store.

Tienda (link)

Tienda is another popular open source Joomla shopping cart template. Tienda is also easy to deploy and use. However, Tienda must be themed to match the current Joomla site design. Theming is simple, though. Built on the MVC framework, the administrator themes the Tienda shopping cart extension in the same simple way that the Joomla site is themed. One of the major advantages to the Tienda extension is that it provides full online store functionality. Tienda is a complete shopping cart solution with all the features of a complete shopping cart system, such as Zen Cart or OpenCart.

iJoomla DigiStore (link)

The iJoomla DigiStore is not open source software. However, for the $79.95 price, this extension is well worth the money. If selling digital or downloadable goods on the Joomla site, this Joomla shopping cart extension is the optimal choice. This extension is a fully functional ecommerce platform that supports all popular methods of payment and provides easy access once a customer has purchased a digital product. Deliver digital music, documents and other downloadable content easily through this extension. This extension deploys in minutes and does not require a merchant account for processing payments.

AyelShop (link)

AyelShop is yet another popular open source Joomla shopping cart extension that is easy to deploy and use. AyelShop integrates OpenCart with Joomla features to create a complete ecommerce platform. If the Joomla administrator is experienced with OpenCart, this package is the best choice. AyelShop is a full featured, complete online store. The developers of the software literally rewrote the OpenCart package as a Joomla extension to create this shopping cart.

VirtueMart (link)

VirtueMart is another popular and widely used open source Joomla shopping cart template. This extension provides several plug-ins for shipping, payment, custom product fields, payment and rules for calculation. Perhaps the most developed and widely used shopping cart extension for Joomla, VirtueMart is great for site administrators that seek all of the functionality of an ecommerce system, such as Zen Cart, with the integration capabilities of a Joomla extension. Deploying VirtueMart may take some time. As with configuring a fully featured shopping cart package, such as Zen Cart, each category, item, price, shipping rule and custom field must be set up prior to use. Though the administrator will spend a significant amount of time with the initial setup of VirtueMart, this extension provides the widest range of options for those who seek to deploy a complete ecommerce solution that integrates with the Joomla platform.

Joomla Shopping Cart Comparison

Each of the Joomla shopping carts reviewed has its own features that will make each package optimal for just about every given need of the site administrator. For selling digital products, iJoomla DigiStore is the best choice. If the Joomla site administrator seeks to sell one or two ebooks on the site, Simple Caddy would be the best choice. If the site administrator is experienced in working with the OpenCart package, AyelShop would most likely be the best choice. Tienda and VirtueMart provide full featured ecommerce store functionality, but both require significant setup and configuration time.

To select the best Joomla shopping cart for your needs, think about how many items, as well as the type of items that will be sold on the site. Consider the learning curve of the site administrator, should they be required to learn an unfamiliar package. Finally, think about the time required to set up the shopping cart extension, add inventory, configure payment and shipping methods, and creating specials and coupons to offer customers. Once you have examined your specific needs, the Joomla shopping cart best suited for your needs should become apparent.

A/B Split Testing and Multivariate Testing – Tips, Tools, and Software

Stop trying to get more TO your website, start getting more FROM your website

Raise your hand if you get excited when you hear the words “Multivariate testing”? How about “A/B Split Testing”? Do these phrases ring true with excitement for you?

Probably not.

But do not worry, my guess is that by the end of this article you will be excited about the possibility of what these terms mean. First and foremost, these words spell a certain relief for most website owners. This article, unlike so many other articles that focus on bringing more and more traffic to your website from new and various sources, will focus on something quite simple. This article will ask the question: don’t you have enough already?

Let’s take a step back for a minute. Most website owner’s share a common goal: to get more conversions. A conversion may be a sale, it may be a newsletter signup, it may be lead, it may be a phone call, it may be a download, etc. We put websites up to achieve a certain end, and when that end is achieved, a goal is reached. So with that in mind, how do we increase the number of times our goals are reached? How do we increase our conversions?

There are two ways: 1) we can get more traffic, and 2) we can do more with the traffic we have. Guess which one of these is usually ignored?

So this is where this article comes in: to discuss doing more with what we have.

A/B Split Testing – Even My Kids Can Do It

My kids do A/B split testing every day. In fact, if you have kids, my guess is that they split test as well. This morning my son came up to me and asked if he could have chocolate candy (I hadn’t fed him breakfast yet). Upon hearing my very tired “no”, he then went into the other room and asked his mother if he could have chocolate. At just 2 years old, he is practicing the simple science of split testing. Unfortunately for him, he started with a losing proposition, so the result was the same.

Split testing is taking one element, creating a variation of it, and then testing the two variations against each other. My son chose me as the element he would split test, chose my wife as the variation, then tested both parents to see if one created a better result than the other. For your website, you may not want to test your parents, but you may want to test your page titles, a picture, or a disclaimer.

Multivariate Testing – I’m Not So Sure My Kids Can Do It…

…but you can! Multivariate testing takes A/B split testing and puts it on steroids. Rather than isolate just one element, multivariate testing encourages you to test multiple elements and multiple variations of those elements. The reasoning here is important: multivariate testing recognizes that it is more than just a title or a picture or a disclaimer that drives conversions, rather, it is a combination of how all things work together on your pages that drive conversions. Whereas a disclaimer on one page may reduce conversions, a disclaimer on a different page may actually increase conversions.

So how do you go about doing multivariate testing? Well, you don’t do it on your own – you need the help of software and tools. Multivariate testing creates combinations which will all be tested against each other. When testing multiple elements and multiple variations, the result is that you can generate a large number of variations rather quickly. Keeping track of these variations, knowing when to stop testing one, etc, would be too much to realistically handle.

Knowing that multivariate testing is more complex and requires a bit more thought, it may be tempting to avoid it all together. But to do so would be, in my opinion, a significant mistake. Multivariate testing can uncover combinations of elements that you would never think to try on your own. When you are trying to get more out of what you already have, it is worthwhile to take the time to test, test, test.

Multivariate Testing Tools and A/B Split Testing Tools

Most multivariate testing tools are built for large organizations that have a staff of statisticians who throw around words like “standard deviation” and “multiple permutations” in their break room as if they were “normal” words (then again, they have a different definition of “normal” as that too is one of a statistician’s favorite terms). My guess is that most website owner’s do not have the time to break out their statistician hats and start crunching numbers – most website owner’s want to know what works and then move on with their lives.

With that in mind, here are a few tools that you may want to look at to help you start a multivariate test:

Google Website Optimizer. No list on multivariate testing would be complete without including Google Website Optimizer. Why? Because its free, its useful, and its fairly thorough. Google added its website optimizer in their Adwords center to help advertisers get more from their advertising spend. However, you do not need to be spending money with Adwords to use this fantastic tool.Google multivariate testing can be a bit tricky to setup and you may want the help of a developer when it comes to integrating the code into your website. If you use WordPress, you may want to check out this plugin.

WordPress Split Testing Plugin. Speaking of WordPress, if you would like to run simple A/B Split tests, take a look at this plugin.

Visual Website Optimizer. This tool has received plenty of good reviews. Unlike Google Website Optimizer, it is not free, but unlike Google, it is easy to setup and allows quick changes of tests on your site. In addition, because it is a paid version, you will get very good support if you need it.

Unbounce. For those of you who just want to create and manage landing pages, Unbounce is a nice solution. Unbounce is limited to A/B testing only, however, it is extremely easy to use and perfect for anyone who runs PPC campaigns for lead generation campaigns.

Finding a good tool for your Internet business and needs can take some time, but once you settle in with a tool, you will likely grow addicted to testing.

Don’t Limit Yourself – What Can Be Tested

Testing isn’t just about headlines. Testing can be anything at all on your website! Try testing the following:

Test multipage checkout forms against a single page checkout form

Test including privacy notices vs. no privacy notices

Test email subject titles

Test showing one set of products on your front page vs. no products

Test having a large “slider” on your front page vs. no slider

Test signing your name personally to your site against not including it

Test colors

Test fonts

You may be surprised at what causes people to continue looking at your site and what causes people to leave. Being successful on the Internet is not about having good instincts, its about learning to trust metrics and hard data.

I’m Not Excited Yet…In Fact, I’m Kind of Sleepy

At the beginning of this article I promised that talking about A/B Split Testing and Multivariate testing would get you excited about your website. If you have read this far and are thinking I am a liar, then I would ask that you give me just one more chance.

Let’s talk about results. Just how effective is testing and what can it do for your business?

To answer this, let’s take a look at a real life example. At Quiet Light Brokerage, we invite website owner’s like yourself to submit their web businesses for a complimentary valuation. Our form is simple and straightforward, but our goal is to start conversations with as many qualified people as possible. As such, we setup Google Optimizer to run a multivariate test on our valuation form to see just how much we could improve our conversion rate.

What would you do if you could double your sales after just one month? What would be willing to do in order to triple your sales after one month? Would you consider it worth your time? Most people would agree that it is worthwhile.

Most website owner’s are overworked and are not specialists in enough areas to take the time to track and test conversion rates. This is rather unfortunate. While most of us go around chasing more traffic, new social networks, and the like, well organized and successful marketers make sure that their websites are functioning at their top levels.

Choosing a CMS: WordPress, Joomla, Drupal & Expression Engine

Your CMS is one of the most important decisions you’ll make when you create a website. Not only will your choice decide what you’re able to do with your site, but it will also determine how technical it is to handle, how many pages it can handle, and how much maintenance it needs.

I’ve arranged this quick guide for you in order of technical difficulty, to help make your choice in CMS easier.

WordPress (Self-Hosted)

The most user-friendly of the bunch, WordPress doesn’t offer developers as much freedom as other systems at its core, but there are a ton of plugins available and ready to be installed — most functionality changes are done with plugins. On the bright side, it’s easy to find technical help and there’s even more free help available online.

Usability really is the strong point for this CMS, no matter how many pages or posts you have. You can switch themes quickly and easily, control content with a few clicks, and if it needs maintenance, much of it can be done almost instantly.

Drupal

Drupal requires a bit of a learning curve, but it’s claim to fame is flexibility. You can do virtually anything with this software, and if you have a large site or 10K pages or more, it’s the best of the bunch. Plugins make it even easier, which means it’s an even match with WordPress. It requires a bit more work to make it search engine ready and site wonderful, but overall, it’s not bad.

Because it’s a little more technical, you can expect some minor regular maintenance. Also, developers can be a bit harder to find than those familiar with WordPress.

Joomla

If you’re looking to work within a set system, consider Joomla. It has very little flexibility, with some themes and plugins, but the core is pretty limited. Even for the user, it’s not that easy. It’s complex dashboard makes it difficult to manage, and there’s not a whole lot you can do to change that. Sedarch engines and theme ready is another complex issue. In fact, you can only optimize and ready the site to a certain point.

Expression Engine

Expression Engine is difficult technically, and it can be tough to find developers, but it has great flexibility, even with very few plugins or themes available. If needed, the makers of the software are available to help. All that aside, sites made with this CMS are beautiful and fluid.

It might not be quite as easy to use as WordPress, but it isn’t a whole lot more difficult either. It needs a lot of technical know-how at the beginning, and regular maintenance after, but you’ll find it has relatively good SEO and is great after it’s going.

Which CMS do you like best for your sites?

*Update* This is NOT a definitive guide. This piece is also not endorsing one CMS or the other. It’s merely a summary of general opinions. You should NEVER choose a CMS because of one post. You should always investigate things yourself and look them over carefully before making any decisions. The point of this post is to start discussion and bring up points and opinions about each, which it has, so I urge you to read the comments.

Secondly, I wasn’t clear enough on this point in the original post, so I’d like to clarify a few things here: It is completely possible to rank sites based on Joomla for a CMS. However, when you take away all external factors and compare them to generally accepted SEO practices (including those recommended by Google), Joomla doesn’t offer as many out of the box as WordPress. I’m not saying you should stop using Joomla, nor am I saying you should avoid it or only use WordPress. I’m merely stating you should be aware of these things before you decide to use any CMS. I’ve seen all of these systems work amazingly well and horribly, so in the end, it’s the person running the show that makes all the difference. In other words, make an informed decision.

How to Write Content that Keeps Your Blog Readers Coming Back for More

Content rules the web. From websites to white papers, videos, blogs and everything in between, content is what stands between you and the customer/prospect you are trying to reach.

First, if you are not doing anything at all to get your content to convert, you must start there.
However, if you have invested time and effort into your blog content but you are not getting the results you expect, it may be time to look at another important piece of the puzzle.

You can spend hours upon hours lamenting over techniques like great headlines, keywords, a winning introduction, professional images and product benefits, yet still fall flat. Though these techniques will improve your content, they may not be enough to take it to the next level.

Online marketers tend to get caught up in perfecting content and trying too hard to make it work.
Below are the three impediments to writing blog posts that work:

Perfectionist – Cut yourself some slack. You are not perfect and neither are your blog readers. Some of my best content came out of an attitude of transparency when I shared my weaknesses and struggles. I am not saying to share your deepest, darkest psychological hang-ups with your blog audience, but a little transparency can go a long way. Showing people your weaknesses will help them more than just force feeding them information.

Too Technical – Left-brained bloggers will often veer towards the more technical side of writing which can often be bland and uninteresting. Technical writing is appropriate for whitepapers and manuals, but not always the best choice for a blog.

Integrity – You may know you are a person of integrity, but your readers need time to scope you out and determine that for themselves. By following your heart more, you can reveal a more personal side to your readers which will make your content more interesting to read.

It takes a little bravery and courage to take a walk on the wild side and write from your heart. But, in the invisible world of the internet, the best content connects and jumps off the page. This dynamic is impossible with technical jargon and calculated prose.

Scratch the Rules

Sometimes it’s fun to throw away the rules and just go for it! Here is an exercise I want you to do for your next blog post.

Write a first draft purely out of an emotional response. Forget about headlines, grammar, keywords and images and just WRITE. Try to bypass your head and reach your heart.

Think about why you started your business (aside from money) and what you want to provide your customers/prospects.

Don’t write like you are writing to your blog audience. Write like you are sending a letter to a best friend to inform them of your business.

Find a way to get happy about what you are writing. If you are writing about drywall, this may be a little difficult, but if you can re-frame it into something that makes you excited, it will show in your writing.

Don’t get caught up in the details. Just stay connected to your heart and write.

Now, don’t post what you just wrote on your blog! Your post will need some editing but that first draft is important.

If you did this exercise correctly, you may find some interesting observations. You may re-connect with a desire to put your customers first. You may find new angles with which to introduce your products. You may realize that you have a lot more to say than you thought.

Now that you poured out your heart into your post, you can adjust it so it makes sense to your readers and is grammatically correct. Sometimes it’s helpful to leave the content for about a day and come back to it later. Fix the errors, add your keywords, but don’t take the energy and excitement out of the message.

Mix it Up

Sometimes technical content is needed and it’s perfectly fine to include it in your rotation of blog posts. But even in those posts, don’t forget to be authentic and real. You will find you can grow your blog community more by connecting with them on a level beyond their heads which will do more for your business in the long run.

Why your Content Doesn’t Convert

Web pages, videos, articles, podcasts, blog posts—content is everywhere and with Google’s latest algorithm changes, valuable content is more important than ever.

Here’s the problem: Most businesses put out content without ever seeing a return on time and investment.
While there are some tricks and tips you can apply to your content, if you don’t have the following basic rules down, the best tips will not make a difference.

Here are my top 3 techniques to making the best of your content on the web. There are many more strategies you can implement (winning headlines, calls to action, etc.) but if you are not applying these foundational techniques, you will not experience the results you desire.

1. Quality over Quantity
What is the definition of quality content?
Quality content provides a “real” solution to the reader. It solves a problem and rates above similar content on the web.

Poor quality content offers the same information found all over the web. For articles or blogs, it centers on one or two sentences that are drawn out just to increase word count. Poor content also does not take the audience into consideration. Most likely, the author of this type of content is not concerned with the reader, but with meeting a certain quota for content distribution.

Most of the content you find on the web consists of poor quality content as defined above. This is the reason Google continually adjusts its algorithms to bring searchers the most valuable content when they query.
You can distribute hundreds of content pieces, but if not one is high quality, you could be wasting time and inhibiting profit potential. Every piece of content says “something” about your brand and should reflect your business values. High quality content like this evokes a response from the reader/viewer.

2. Stay Focused
Jack of all trades, master of nothing…
While there are those who knowingly put out poor content, there are others who honestly try to distribute quality content and do so in many different avenues, but the dots never seem to connect.

If you are a “one man show” and you cannot afford to hire a skilled content writer, it can be difficult to know where to begin and where to stop.

One person cannot take on more than a few tasks at a time. If so, quality suffers. You are better off investing more time into less content and making it valuable and of a higher quality, rather than trying to take on every content marketing strategy out there. Once your content converts, you can accomplish more by outsourcing and continuing to grow.

3. Know Your Audience
What does quality content look like? In a nutshell, if you know your audience and their pain points and you solve them with your content, you will be successful.

Unfortunately, this is often easier said than done.

Knowing your audience is more than studying a particular demographic. If you are selling wedding dresses, your audience will most likely be females between the ages of 25 – 45. However, if you stop there, you are doing yourself an injustice.

Imagine you were a customer. What would your thoughts be? What problems would you have? What solutions would you need? What day to day issues would arise for a woman in this demographic?
Take time and research your audience and really try to understand who they are. By taking this more detailed approach, you will be able to identify their problems. Your content should be the SOLUTION.

Summing it Up

These three foundational strategies are, in my opinion, crucial for creating content that converts.
Before you approach every piece of content, reflect on the following statements. The more you do this, the more it will become second nature:

- Consider the reader/viewer’s needs and stay focused on why you are creating the content.
– Put the needs of your audience first and you will receive more in return.
– Speak directly to the pain points of your audience.
– Focus on quality first, not quantity

When the content is complete, honestly ask yourself this question: “Would I read/view this content and see it as valuable?” If yes, you have done your job.
Do you have any other content strategies that have worked for you?

7 Tricks to Get a Goooooooooooogle of Links

SEO is a race. And in any race learning from your competitors makes you a better runner. Even when you’re running first it’s sometimes good to look back and check the runner-ups. And if you’re not the yellow jersey guy, you absolutely should examine the leaders: their gear, their training, their strategy. In SEO the most interesting thing about your competition are their links.
Whether you like it or not SEO is still pretty much about links. Good link profile can make up for almost any lack of optimized content and other onpage flaws. Love or hate, the best thing you can do about it is embrace the fact and run with it.
So let’s go through some tricks that will enable you to look deeper into your competition’s link profile granting you access to the restricted areas: their locker room, dirty laundry and even the briefing hall where they plan their link building strategies.

Let’s talk competitive link research

Finding out where your competitors’ links come from is not all that hard. You just go to Yahoo! or Google and type in
link:www.your-competitor.com
to get a list of inbound links to the site.
Yahoo’s much better in that respect as it tends to give more extensive and accurate data. The problem here is that there’s a limit of 1,000 links per website which is often not enough as the fattest link sources get left behind the limit fence. Here’re some tips to break through to the other side.

Note: If you’re lazy like me skip to the end of the article where I’ll share a tool that does it all much quicker.

Trick 1: Search for links to particular web pages of a competing site

Alongside with
link:www.your-competitor.com search for link:www.your-competitor.com/products.html
or
link:www.your-competitor.com/services.html
and so on.

Trick 2: Exclude internal links

You may examine the internal linking structure of your competition if you want to gain some insight on their navigation and marketing steps. But as we want to find more external links, let’s exclude the internal ones.
You can do this by adding
-site:site.com
operator to your search query. Type in

link:http://www.your-competitor.com -site:your-competitor.com
or
linkdomain:www.your-competitor.com -site:your-competitor.com
“

and you’ll get a list of external backlinks only.
There’s a dropdown option in Yahoo! site explorer that does the same.

Trick 3: Exclude links coming from certain domains

The
-site:
modifier lets you exclude links coming from specific sites. So, whenever you see a large chunk of links coming from same domain add
-site:thisdomain.com
modifier to your query and the links from this site will get replaced with new ones.
You can add
-site:
multiple times in one query so that you have something like this:

Trick 4: Check links coming from certain TLDs

This is a little known trick. The
site:
modifier actually lets you get a list of links coming from domains with certain TLDs: .com, .org, .edu, .co.uk and so on. Just type in
link:http://www.your-competitor.com site:.gov
or
linkdomain:www.your-competitor.com site:.gov
and you’ll get a list of .gov sites linking to your rival.
Note: Do this in Yahoo! regular search, not site explorer

Trick 5: Exclude links coming from certain TLDs

This is an even lesser known trick. You can exclude certain tlds from the results with the
-site:.tld
modifier. Usually the biggest chunk of links comes from .com’s so add a
-site.com
modifier and you’ll get lots of new link data.

Trick 6: Use different combinations of the first 5 tricks

Try
link:http://www.your-competitor.com/page.html
-site:your-competitor.com -site:.com

Or
link:http://www.your-competitor.com site:.org -site:wikipedia.org

Give it a thought and I’m sure you’ll come up with lots of your own. Feel free to share your findings in the comments

Trick 7: Use the above 6 tricks in different search engines
Don’t limit your searches to Yahoo! and Google, go to AltaVista, Alexa, (Bing doesn’t give you link data, so forget about it) but then there’re Exalead, Excite and tons of regional search engines. Search them, remove the duplicates and you’ll have a goooooooooooooooogol of competitor’s links to study.

Note: Some search engines have a different set of operator so you’ll need to type
domain:
instead of
link:
.

Getting it all done fast
This sure seems like a lot of work and it is. Moreover, getting the links list is only the beginning and the easy part of competitive link research. Once you get the list you need to analyze each link, weed out poor quality sites and only leave the ones you can get a link from. Now THAT’s a lot of work.

I’m too lazy to do this all by hand, besides I value my time too much to waste it on such kind of work. That’s why I use SEO SpyGlass an advanced link analysis tool that employs all the tricks described in this article (plus some more advanced ones I don’t even know) to get up to 25,000 links per domain, which is much, much more than any other tool can get.

SEO SpyGlass also finds all the data I need to analyze the links:

> Google PR of the domain and linking page
> The URL and title of the linking page
> The anchor text and description
> Whether the link is still on the page (sometimes the link gets removed but search engines will think it’s there till they reindex the page).
> Whether the link is no-follow or dofollow
> How many other links are on the page
> How much link value the link passes
> And some other data like TLDs, domain age, country, etc.

If you want to do competitive link research seriously I’d strongly recommend trying SEO SpyGlass out. We all know that we should be engaging in social bookmarking and social marketing for our online businesses in some way, but just as the over-abundance of marketing activities can be overwhelming, simply finding and identifying social bookmarking sites that are worth our time and effort can be daunting. Your time is valuable to you and cannot be spent on activities that add little to no value to your online business, and as such, finding quality do-follow social bookmarking sites that will actually help your search rankings is often thrown to the site in favor of more immediate and apparent pressing needs.
This article will try to help you sift through this often dull and unrewarding task. First, we will identify a handful of social bookmarking sites (not all will be of interest to your site directly). More importantly, we will show why and how these are valuable so you can identify social bookmarking sites that work well for you. Next we will offer a few good tools that you can use to automate your social bookmarking activities (this is the REALLY important step).

First, A Few Sites to Focus On
What makes a good social bookmarking target? Most people engage in social bookmarking for one of two reasons: 1) either they want the SEO benefit that social bookmarks can provide, or 2) they hope to generate a following from their social bookmarking activities. Ideally we would focus on both, but the reality is that not every page we publish or article we write will have a viral effect. In addition, the SEO benefit of social bookmarks, while still important, can be deprecated due to the high amount of abuse and automation.
With that in mind, here are 15 social bookmarking sites, so do-follow and others no-follow. You do not need to use each of these, but rather use this list as a guide for how to qualify a good social bookmarking site.

Google+. The reason for this should be obvious. As much as many of us groaned at the thought of another social network to become current on, Google+ is making it more and more difficult to ignore them. In fact, they are nearly making it impossible by integrating themselves into their search results. Add to the fact that getting +1′s is now a factor in their search algorithm, Google+ offers a compelling reason to become a part of their social network.

Twitter. This as well should be no surprise. Twitter is a bit of an odd social network in that they have remained relatively consistent and simple over the past few years. While Facebook seems intent on overtaking our lives, Twitter is content with being the micro-blogging platform that offers website owners thousands of low-value links and the possibility of becoming viral quickly.

Delicious. Delicious is one of the gradfather’s of the social bookmarking scene. Although its popularity has dropped over the past several years in light of other mediums rising to prominence, this is still a great site to keep in your arsenal.

StumbleUpon. StumbleUpon, like Twitter, has stayed remarkably true to its roots and to its original intent. StumbleUpon gives website owner’s the ability to have their site indexed in a well managed category system which can be helpful. In addition, the traffic from SU seems to have some staying power to it.

Pinterest. Pinterest is the up and comer on this list. The growth of Pinterest is well documented, as is the linking power that this site can throw your way.

Buzzflash. This is one of many niche social bookmarking sites. This is a site for political news, blog posts, and the like. Niche blogs like this are highly valuable. This is also a “do follow” social bookmarking site.

Reddit. Reddit originally started out as a site geared more towards tech heads, but in the past few years they have expanded and allowed anyone to start up a niche Reddit channel. Once again, this provides you with the best of two worlds: high PR and powerful site along with the power of niche specification.

Fark. Fark is one of the older social bookmarking sites and has proven itself to stay editorially true over time. This site is geared towards news stories and releases.

Chictini. Chictini is a bookmarking site geared towards women and specifically towards fashion. Do follow niche sites like this are a powerful tool in your overall set of sites you use.

Look for more…you can find a nice list of niche sites here.

Social Bookmarking Automation – Tools and Tips
Before we get into this section, allow me to first offer this warning: automating your social bookmarking is nearly required, but it can easily be used in the wrong way thus invalidating any work you put into it. Social bookmarking is an activity that is easily “gamed” by automation software and unfortunately it is rather easy to identify when it has been “gamed”. The goal with social bookmarking is to appear as natural as possible. When using automation software, your goal should be the same is it would be if you were to do your bookmarking by hand. A proper social bookmarking campaign will result in improved search engine rankings as well as real visitors to your site.

With that said, here are three tools worth looking into:

SocialAdr.com – SocialAdr.com uses the power of crowdsourcing to generate a very natural link profile and bookmarks to your pages. They offer both a paid version and a free version, however, for the overworked online business owner, the paid version is highly worthwhile. With 1-2 minutes per day you can get your site bookmarked across literally thousands of sites from real bookmarking accounts at a natural pace. Currently SocialAdr uses 21 bookmarking sites which is certainly a good number, but most importantly, those sites are kept updated on a regular basis. This is by and far the easiest system we have used.

Bookmarking Demon – If one were to describe Bookmarking Demon in a word it would be “powerful”. This software gives you an incredible amount of flexibility, automation, and distribution power. The number of options you have as a marketer are astounding. The product of this power, however, is naturally some level of complexity. Learning how to use Bookmarking demon does take a bit of time, and configuring it properly will also take time. Fortunately they have provided a free guide, or you can also buy this tutorial which is quite comprehensive and will help you guard against those things which could trip up your campaign.

Social Submitter – the folks over at SEOTools have developed a nice little piece of software that allows you to accomplish much of the same things as Bookmarking Demon, but without the same level of complexity. Naturally this does limit your options a bit, but if you are looking for a happy medium between SocialAdr and BookmarkingDemon, then this may warrant a look.

Social Bookmarking Sites – Properly Done, Proper Results
For any person who publishes content on a regular or semi-regular basis, social bookmarking sites can be a fantastic ally for your efforts. Social bookmarking sites help round out an overall SEO picture, can give you exposure which generates additional external links, and are very good at driving long-tail keyword results in the search engines.
But social bookmarking is time consuming. To that end, work smart, choose where you will submit, and automate as much as possible. Then focus on the other parts of your business that require more of your time!

How to get indexed by Google in ONE hour

If you’re not familiar with how some people accomplish getting their web sites submitted to Google quickly, you are going to absolutely love this article.

I’ve bet you’ve heard from many people that it can take days, weeks, even months to get indexed by Google. If you have heard that, you’re now thinking, “OK Jamie, you must have had a really stressful day at work today and you’re now hallucinating that this is possible!”.

If I read this blog title a while ago, I’m sure I would be thinking the same thing as you! Ok, let’s move on to how to get indexed by Google within one hour.

The secret is quite simple. Almost every site in today’s Internet world uses the social network sharing buttons. On my blog, http://www.endyourif.com I include it on every article page. I also include it on the main listing pages underneath my article summary.

If you don’t already have one of these on your sites, get one now, just search “Share This” or “Add This” and you will find a ton of web sites that tell you to put a few lines of Javascript code on your web site and it does the rest.

Ok, so now you have this button added to your web site? Perfect, I would suggest going to a page on your web site that you think will be the most valuable to other users and submit it to a couple of those sites listed in the button.

I have personally found excellent success with both Digg and Reddit. I launched a web site about 1 or 2 months ago, submitted two links to Digg. I waited about an hour or so and searched Google with keywords that I felt I targeted well and lo and behold there it was, my page was found and indexed with Google. Not only was it found, it was in the top 10!

Don’t just stop here though. Submitting to the above sites will provide you with some quick traffic. It won’t last long if people don’t like your site. Plus, it won’t cause your other pages to be indexed either. It really is just a start.

The next step is to create an XML sitemap of your content. Once you’ve done this, create an account on the Google Webmaster Tools. You will need to add your domain and verify your site before continuing.
Once you’ve completed this, add your sitemap that you previously created. Within a few minutes (some times longer), Google will validate your sitemap and queue all of your links to be indexed.

This of course is not a guaranteed solution to be indexed any faster. But Google certainly seems to crawl your sitemap on a regular basis and check the links. It also checks how often your site is updated, the more frequently it is updated, the more frequently Google will crawl your content!

If it’s possible, you should try to perform some kind of daily updates to your site. Ideally if you allow users to comment, hopefully there will be several new comments per day and this will cause your data to be considered new.

Sumber

Things You Must Do for Your Off-Site SEO

As many of you may already be aware, search engine optimization can be divided into two distinct parts: on-site optimization and off-site optimization. Both are important in terms of achieving that much coveted top spot in Google that you have been yearning for your website.
This article however will be focusing on the off-site optimization part of the entire process and the different tools that you can utilize in this regard.

Quality Of Back Links
In most other circumstances it’s supposed to be the more the better, but in terms of SEO back linking you actually have to take better care of the quality of the back links that you receive more than the quantity that is coming your way. This is because Google actually gives more weight to the page rank of those sites which are linking back to you even though they may number fewer, as compared to those which are considered as weak back links coming from websites having low page ranks no matter how many they are.

Using Your Keyword As Anchor Text In The Back Links
Consistently emphasizing your keyword in your back links will drive home the point to Google and will make them understand what your site is all about. You must be careful however that the anchor texts would not look awkward in the overall flow of the article linking back to you otherwise Google will also notice this and may classify some of the links as spam as a result. It will also help if you vary your keyword a little bit every once in a while and not use the exact same keyword over and over again as this will not look natural and for which you may be penalized as well.

Be a Guest Blogger on Related Sites
This is one way for you to get noticed and will establish you as an authority on the subject of your blog. Best thing is that the site owners will usually allow you to leave credits and provide links at the bottom of your article so that readers may know how to contact you or find you. If the website where you are guest posting is well respected and has high traffic count then it would be so much better for your site as well.

Leave Comments On Relevant Blogs
Find blogs that are relevant to your site and participate and interact with the author or other readers by leaving comments to their blogs. This is another way to establish your knowledge on a subject matter which can create corresponding trickle effect of goodwill for your site.

Video-Link Baiting
This strategy can also be used for on-site optimization but it’s much more effective if you utilize it through YouTube. Users which might not have noticed you through other channels will be alerted of your site via attention-grabbing videos which you post on YouTube. Just be careful that you stick to ethical standards when you post your videos as bad taste will definitely create a backlash for you and your offered products or services. You don’t want to sacrifice content just for the sake of some short-term grab for attention which will easily wear off anyway and yet the bad taste associated with it will remain for a long time and could possibly rub off on the reputation of your site or product.

How to Write Effective SEO Headlines

There’s the fine art of writing catchy, reader intriguing headlines. And then there’s the importance of SEO. Combining the two effectively is a little trickier and can mean the difference between success and failure… well it’s maybe not that extreme but it does matter, and if you know what you’re doing you can get it right.

Step One – Keyword Research
Unless you are incredibly adept at SEO, it’s likely that you are targeting long-tail keywords for your website or blog. Long-tail keywords are basically phrases which due to their length are easier to rank for in Google. Ideally you need to include your keyword in your heading, whilst at the same time making your heading sound interesting.
For example, the keyword in the title of this blog post is ‘effective SEO’. The Google keyword tool tells me it’s not a bad keyword to try and rank for – it has over 5,000 searches a month and medium competition – so now I just need to encourage you lovely readers to click on my post. This is where I need to come up with a catchy title. Here are a few of the pages that are on the first page of Google for my search term:

5 Secrets to Selecting Highly Effective SEO Keywords

The Simplest, Most Effective SEO Move You Can Make

22 Effective SEO Tips

All of the above are catchy, and I’m sure that as a user I would click on a couple of them. Want to know why? Well aside from pleasing Google they also intrigue a reader. Hence my title ‘How to Write Effective SEO Headlines’ would probably (at least I think it would) intrigue a reader too.

Step Two – Keyword Placement
Whilst not essential, it is a good idea to place your keyword at the start of your headline if possible. I haven’t managed to do it with this post but it is thought to help an SEO strategy if you can. A few examples of good keyword placement, that will still intrigue a reader include:

Effective SEO – Five Tips That Won’t Cost You a Penny

Effective SEO Strategies That Can be Implemented In Seconds

Effective SEO Marketing – Are You Sure You’re Doing it Right?

Step Three – Take Your Time
An effective SEO headline won’t just appear out of thin air, and many will take a while to come up with. In fact some SEO copywriters say that the headline of an article should take as long to come up with than the article itself takes to write; whilst this may be a bit extreme for an average blog post, it’s not a bad way of looking at things. It’s a good idea to brainstorm a variety of headlines and then narrow your list down. The one that keeps popping out at you, is likely to be the same headline that will intrigue your readers, so have faith and go with it. Don’t be afraid to keep messing around with your headline until you have got it exactly as you want it. There are also a variety of different punctuation marks that you could include to give your headline that little something more.
Above all, remember that you want your headline to be catchy for your readers, but full of SEO juice too. The better your headline is, the more clicks to your webpage you will receive. Good luck!

Optimizing Your Local Business Blog for Top Results

Blogging is a way to share your local business content daily, weekly, or on whatever schedule you choose.

When focusing on the following, you’ll be doing wonders to help optimize your blog to maximize your lead generating efforts:

Buttons

Call-to-Action/Subscriptions

Formatting

Images

Preview Option

Quick Loading

Use share buttons.
With the way social media networking is growing, it’s important to have your blog connecting to any and all of those networks. There are two buttons to consider including to make this happen:

One’s for the social media sites you use to allow viewers to follow you blog.

The other is buttons that go on your blog so that viewers can share your blog on their social media networks.

With share buttons, it’s important to not have too many. Customers may choose to ignore the buttons altogether if overwhelmed by too many options of where they should choose to share your blog. Only include share buttons for social media networks that you use frequently.

Include call-to-actions.
If wanting to better your lead generation for your blog, then including a call-to-action in each post you publish is very wise. If you choose to do so, make sure to test them to make sure the call-to-action operates properly. You’ll appear unprofessional and possibly lose leads if they don’t. You also need to make sure your call-to-action is easily understandable so visitors will know what to do to subscribe to whatever it is you’re offering to gain access to information

Formatting is important.
The main thing you should focus on when formatting your blog is the headline. It’s what traffic should see when visiting your local business blogging site. Visitors should be wowed by it and be able to easily understand what the blog is for; in this case, your local business.

Images are a must.
I can’t inform people enough about how vital images are when it comes to websites, even blogging sites. They are what people tend to notice immediately and are also what people remember. With the images, you need to make sure they are used appropriately throughout your blog, and they shouldn’t be random. They need to relate to the topics within a specific blog, as well as your local business blog sight itself.

Make your blog easy to search on and view.
Your local business blog site is, after all, where you publish content about your business. With that being said, people don’t like scanning through every post that’s been published to find what they’re looking for or one’s that interesting to them. You should create a digital table of contents that includes a brief preview of recent posts published on your blog that’s easy to locate.

Site speed is a necessity.
If you’re looking to have a low bounce rate, then you should make sure that your blog page loads quickly. Those who visit your site expect to view the content they’re searching for immediately. If your page loads slowly, then visitors will more than likely leave and not return.

Is it appropriate to make light of another person’s demise, or to use the topic for your own purposes? So long as it’s about a kooky-ass dictator in a land far away, the answer is “Hell yes!” Kim Jong-Il is link bait incarnate… or reincarnated, as the case may be.

Most often, the pursuit of links through original content is about providing readers with real value and hoping you gradually grow your readership within your target audience. Your content is the means by which you demonstrate your ability as a thought leader, an expert, an analyst, or perhaps just a helpful person. Most articles that talk about how to “go viral” actually provide advice on how to create good content that people want to read. You should do that all the time.

This article is not about good content. This is about jumping on the trend– the meme– and appealing to the basic emotions of curiosity, self-righteousness, schadenfreude, indignation, or whatever else stirs the pot.
Go ahead and pronounce yourself above it, if you like. Maybe you don’t want to be associated with tasteless foolishness. I’m not suggesting you write a piece lambasting ol’ KJ to post on your site’s homepage, or blog, or your brand’s youtube account. You could stick with kittens.

No, seriously, you don’t even need to be the author, nor do you need to publish on your own site. Grab a writer online, or use a pseudonym for all I care. The point about link bait content is that if it catches people’s attention, it leaves a trail of link juice back to wherever you point it.

Few readers will ever care who wrote it, much less follow the link back to your site. Google, however, will notice exactly how many times your piece was shared (even on social media), and that’s what matters when it comes to link bait.

In the pre-Panda era, link bait came to mean sites that gamed the algorithm to capture traffic based on keywords that were often completely unrelated to the content of the site. They just hoped to sell things by exposing themselves to enough eyeballs, user experience be damned. You can’t really do that anymore, and most businesses and serious bloggers have no use for such schenanigans anyway.

Link bait is now about real, original and/or smartly curated content going “viral.” Whether it’s closely related to the subject matter of your business is beside the point. In fact, whatever you focus on all day is probably a wee bit too dry (or, uh, cold and damp?) to catch fire on the interwebz. Visceral reactions are the ones we share. Intellectual ones, not nearly as much.

Let’s suppose you can afford some edgy, topical humor in your content ecosystem (and the vast majority of bloggers and many online brands certainly can) there are a lot of ways to approach it — none of them guaranteed. Creating things that grab a lot of “endorsements” as links certainly requires an artful approach to the content. That being said, I strongly believe there really is a method you can use to greatly improve your chances.

Think of it as a venn diagram; the more traits you capture, the more likely you are to create something people react to, get a kick out of AND want to share. No single trait is required, but the more the better.
I’ll use the Dear Leader to illustrate.

Be Timely: Kim Jong-Il was reported dead on a Sunday. I’m writing this fewer than 24 hours later. If your topic is news-related, you’d best jump on it. Social media is faster than cable news, which is faster than network news. Wait too long and topical content is too late.

Be Trending: Not “trendy.” Trendy is probably “over.” Trendy happens after it’s caught fire for a while. News sites, blogs and the twittersphere are… a-twitter… with Kim Jong-Il right now. Ride the wave. People want to be in on it. No use in writing about breaking news that no one cares to talk about. Curate good stuff as a way to jump into the conversation, like this list of the best Kim Jong-Il parodies. You don’t need much writing talent to curate well.

Be Titillating: You want people to ask “What is THIS about?” Think long and hard about your headline. Be provocative, controversial, a little bit bad or otherwise unabashedly indulgent. You have permission to push the boundaries of good taste. Have a theory about the deceased despot’s sex life? His hopes and dreams? His fashion sense? His reflections on a life well- despicably-lived? Why he’s so misunderstood? Why the world is doomed without him? The dude was crazy – you could just about report facts and they’d be rather curious.

Be Funny: This might be the hardest part. If you’ve done a good job finding a titillating topic, the funny angle should follow. Funny isn’t necessary, but it sure helps. This Kim Jong-Il dating profile has been viewed over 100,000 times in the past two years (that’s a lot of volume for most videos, to be sure), probably because it’s titillating, but it’s not terribly funny. It ain’t no Honey Badger with 27,000,000 views , even though it took more creativity and effort to create the video from scratch. Think you need a video to be funny? Cracked.com doesn’t think so.

Be Familiar: I’m from Pittsburgh and for whatever reason, anything said in a Pittsburgh accent is good stuff to share. Sometimes it’s hilarious just because “it’s so true,” other times it’s nostalgic, and still other times, it gives us cover to say the rude, bigoted thoughts we don’t dare spout in polite company. We share familiar things with people we know, stereotypes included. You think the stereotype in the honey badger video isn’t part of what makes it so funny? The actor’s accent in the Kim Jong-Il parody is funny for that same reason. Both politically incorrect, for sure. It’s like joking with your best friend in private, but you do have to find the line– no one will share hateful content.

Be Succinct: If your idea has to be explained, few are going to get it, and no one is going to say, “Hey, look at this!” even if they do get it. Memes are ideas that we ALL get. They travel from person to person with ease. Sometimes, rockstar viral content BECOMES the meme. Most often, it just uses them. Kim Jong-Il is a meme inside of many others: dictator, ankle biter, fashion fail, eccentric weirdo, brutal psychopath. It all goes without saying.

Be Loved or Hated: Link bait doesn’t do it’s job if people don’t “talk” about it by sharing. The stronger our reaction to something, the more likely we need to experience that with others. Don’t be afraid. Go all-in with your crazy take on a subject. Play the devil’s advocate. Produce a satire or a total goof. Slight bemusement won’t get you far. Blasphemy will. You can go off on His Dear Deadness– people love to read about universally hated characters. How handy.

Be Epic: Work hard at it. Make you stuff worth it. Do some research. Make it a production. Good link bait must be a lot better than average, by definition. If you’re guest-posting the piece it will certainly need to be of high value to make it onto a quality site. Of course it’s hard for most of us to create epic shit on a regular basis, with limited time, talent or resources, especially when blogging and other content objectives are just a portion of our daily demands. Dedicating yourself to a great piece every now and then may be worth five, 10, 50 or even 100 regular ho-hum posts. So give it a shot! Kim Jong-Il will only die once, after all.

Anchor Text: Make A Major SEO Impact With Seemingly Minor Details

Anchor text is a perfect example of a seemingly minor detail that actually has a significant impact on a website’s page rank. Understanding some basic principles about anchor text will help you improve the content of your site and enhance its SEO aspects.

What is anchor text?
Anchor text refers to the visible characters and words that hyperlink display when linking to another document or location on the web. For example, if you are linking to an interesting article, your anchor text could be anything from “click here” to the article’s actual title. The hyperlink’s formatting will be different from the surrounding text, either underlined or bolded, and generally a different color than the non-hyperlinked words around it.

How do you decide which words to use as anchor text?
The truth is, most of us intuitively know the best phrases to hyperlink and realize the more specific the anchor text is, the better for our readers and for the linked page. Using generic terms and phrases such as “click here” and “read more” will do the trick, but they are also boring, disrupt the flow of your writing, and tell search engines absolutely nothing about this link you felt was worth mentioning. It is far more effective for your anchor text to include keywords that you would expect to point the way to this linked page if you were searching for it through a search engine.

The first link is the most important link.
Something you should keep in mind is that Google only indexes the anchor text for a specific URL the first time it appears on a page. That means you need to make that initial anchor text count. Titles, domain names, and critical, topical keywords are your best bets for effective anchor text.

The URL behind the anchor text is just as important as the words themselves.
When you are linking to other pages (or asking someone to link to yours), make sure the URL is correct and specific. While a link that leads to your homepage is fine and dandy, it will not ultimately yield the results you want. The best URL will be a permalink that leads to a specific page on a website. Also, links with typos or broken links will undermine exactly what you are trying to do. If you are disseminating information, you will frustrate your audience, and they will not be able to go where you are supposedly sending them. Similarly, if people are linking to you, you do not want them to land on a 404-error page.

Your anchor text can, and should, vary.
When it comes to your own links, you should make sure your anchor text is not uniform across the board. Using synonyms and adjusting syntax can yield excellent anchor text that distinguishes itself from your other links. Other small but effective adjustments to anchor text include switching from singular to plural, alternating between verbs and nouns, or changing word stems.

Internal links need anchor text, too.
When we talk about linking, the emphasis tends to be on outbound links that bring someone to an entirely different website, but there is also internal linking within your own site. Put as much thought into those as you would to external links. There is nothing wrong with helping your readers navigate your site and helping yourself when it comes to better SEO results. That said, linking should be done smartly and sparingly, which brings us to . . .

Less is more.
We have all been on a page that has links up the wazoo, and it is not a pleasant experience. When barraged with links, we make assumptions about the content and the website. It seems commercial, unreliable, and too busy. We feel we have been tricked into landing on some link farm with little to no value, and usually that is the case. Sometimes, however, someone is just overzealous when it comes to linking. Make sure your links, both internal and external, serve a purpose. If people click on your anchor text, you want them to feel like you did them a favor, not duped them or wasted their time.

Write your post first and select the anchor text later.
The best content and link building evolves naturally. When you begin to compose an article or blog post, forget about optimization and just write. Once your article is written, you can revise it with SEO in mind. It will be much easier to decide upon your anchor text and optimize your content in sensible ways, if they are finishing touches and not the primary goal.

Page Titles: Crafting A Critical Piece Of The SEO Puzzle

Whether you are concerned about creating an SEO friendly website or just want a well-designed and professional site representing you, you need to devote time and energy to seemingly small details, such as page titles. Page titles appear in a number of critical places: at the top of the browser when the window is active, in tab labels, which is particularly helpful when someone has multiple tabs open, as the default text when someone bookmarks a page, and, most importantly, in search engine results. Page titles help search engines index your pages and allow people to find you. All of this may seem obvious, and the best page titles may seem like common sense, but keeping the following things in mind will help you reap the most benefit from this critical piece of the SEO puzzle.

While there is no set number of characters your title can have, Google only displays up to 70 title characters. The ideal is approximately 65 characters, give or take a few. Too short, you run the risk of not providing enough information to humans and search engines alike. Too long, and your title will become cumbersome and only partially displayed.

Avoid generic words. It is amazing how many page titles lurking around the internet are actually “Untitled.” “Home,” “Welcome,” and “About,” are similarly useless. You want your page titles to be specific, unique, and informative. Keep in mind that generic words can be appropriate if surrounded by other uncommon, descriptive words.

Find the balance between careful consideration and overthinking. The main elements of your page title should be obvious. If you are writing articles or blog posts, chances are high that your article’s title will also be your page title or something very close to it. Similarly, if your page relates to one product or service from a host of offerings, that product or service should be in your page title. While you want your titles to be dynamic, you do not want them to be abstract or obscure. Never forget that the primary purpose of a title is to describe what is on the page in a way that will make sense to search engines and people alike.

Use keywords appropriately. You do not need to be an SEO professional to understand that keywords are how people find you online. Your page title should include at least one primary keyword that would correlate with the online search that would hopefully lead people to this particular page. It is not uncommon to use a secondary keyword in a page title, as well, and if it flows nicely, by all means, feel free to do this. You should not, however, stuff your titles with keywords, anymore than you would crowd your content with redundant or excessive terms. It will dilute the impact of your writing, and will drive your rank down for using black hat SEO practices.

Use the most significant words first. While there is nothing wrong with common articles like “the” and “a,” and words like “how” or “why,” it is best to lead with your most important words. Not only do search engines pay more attention to the first few words, but people scanning through a list of titles do, too.

There is no hard and fast rule about whether you should include your company or brand name, of if you do, whether it should be in every page title or only a few. If you think people will be searching for you by a particular name, you should include it, but you should also use words that remind people exactly what your company does and indicate what specifically is on the page. For example, if you own a restaurant, it would be smart to include your restaurant’s name, the cuisine you cook, your geographical location, and a description of that page’s contents, such as “dinner menu” or “directions,” but not necessarily in that order. That may sound like a lot of information to condense into 70 characters, but “Vegan Lunch Menu | Veganation Restaurant, Santa Monica, CA” is exactly 58 characters including spaces and punctuation. Before anyone becomes too excited, I should mention that currently there is not a vegan restaurant by the name of Veganation in Santa Monica, CA.

Do not use duplicate titles. Each page of your website should have unique content, and each title should be specific to that content. Duplicate content will hurt your search ranking, even more so with Google’s Panda update, and makes it difficult to navigate your website.

Page titles are a reflection of your website’s content. You should approach your 70 characters or less with the same consideration and creativity you devote to your content. As with all things SEO, a little extra time and attention even to seemingly small details will pay off in the long run.

Alexa Rank No Data

Untuk Cara Mengatasi Alexa No Rank Data Atau No Links in ini, saya sedikit berikan gambarannya seperti dibawah ini.

1. Kunjungi langsung dan login ke akun alexa kita.

2 . Cari pilihan SITE TOOLS maka kita akan menemukan pilihan "Claim Your Site"di pojok kiri bawah.

3. Setelah kita klik pilihan Claim Your site maka kita akan diminta untuk kembali memasukkan URL blog kita.

<meta name="alexaVerifyID" content="jukDoXkjP_5M-ZyrNB2WWcqWbbs" />

5. Setelah kita letakkan kode dan tersebut, maka kita kembali ke akun alexa kita untuk melakukan verifikasi.

6. Cobalah Untuk refresh blog anda.

Maka hasilnya taraaa...!!!

Alexa No Atau Rank No Data yang ditunjukkan di widget pun berubah.

Tambahan.
