a friend of mine just recently asked if i could discuss my job and how faith plays a role in my job, family, etc…

well for starters, i have a college diploma as a developmental services worker. you might be thinking, what is that? well a developmental services worker is someone who works with and supports people who have an intellectual or physical disability whether it be in a group home, community organization, or on a one on one basis.

unfortunately, i am currently not working in that specific field, but it is my hope to be back in the field.

speaking of employment, i recently have been hired by my landlord to work as a maintenance person for my apartment building and the one beside it.

now onto the topic of faith, it plays an important part in my life whether it be in my family, at work, or in the community. it plays an important role especially how i live the gospel in my life through word and action. i do my very best to be christ like to others. another way i live the gospel is through my blog postings and other forms of media.

i believe in being real about my faith and not being phony.

that’s all for now.

god bless,

joe

As someone who was born 3 and 1/3 months premature, had a lot of medical and developmental problems to overcome, and was diagnosed with a learning disability, it seems as if there are certain labels that all of us with disabilities are given by society and today I would like to you to ponder the following thoughts and questions: why it may be unfair and disrespectful to “label” us. For example, learning disabilities (or “L.D.” as it is commonly referred to), Down Syndrome, ADHD, Autism, etc… to name a few. Why does society give us these label I believe that people should recognize us as equal and respect us, include us, and by labeling us we are set aside and sometimes under appreciated. I also believe for a fact that those of us diagnosed with an intellectual disability do NOT have disabilities BUT we have ABILITIES. With that being said, I ask you to join me and many people across the world in pledging to promote the new r-word: which us respect by going to to r-word.org/.

Short true nonfiction story for you: It all began in the summer of 2008-June to be exact, when I attended the summer games for the second consecutive year. Once we arrived, a strange feeling came upon me: I had a crush on a fellow teammate swimmer: a shorter, little bit older girl. I do not see her with a disability nor myself. And so I think an attraction had a started. About 2 years have passed… We are back at our swim practice that’s weekly and therefore we see each other once a week. Somehow through the power of God I have come to find out from another friend and directly her that she likes me and so do I. She even gave me her phone number and we both wanted to see a movie… So I eventually called her and hung up… Because I was NERVOUS to speak to her. Wow. Daniel. What were you thinking? Flash forward to today: she had not returned to swim team. And so I guess what she had told me about moving away had in fact come true … Or has it not? Do I still have a chance? What do you think? Add your comments on this blog post or email me at specialchronicles@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you!
Be a fan of respect.

One final interesting, outstanding, and awesome fact:
