Changing Disk Location in VirtualBox

When we are looking for different kind of operating systems you can think on installing these on your computer, but sometimes you won't use it as usual as you really do with your always-used operating system.

This is my case, I use Linux, Debian specifically, but I bear on mind that Windows will be necessary in some ocassions . Therefore, I decided to install a virtual machine so I won't need to switch between systems which is very annoying.

For doing so It's necessary to have a virtualization software, an application that simulates a virtual PC, where you can install an operating system just like you'll do it on your real computer. As you should imagine there are many of these applications but I prefer VirtualBox for being free.

When you install this software it will help you to configure your virtual machines (yes, you can have many) having as an important step the creation of a virtual disk to be used for the virtual PC, all is happiness when you use the wizard but I needed later to use my virtual disk in another computer so I didn't want to install everything again but to use my previous virtual disk created.

Then, in this situation you first need to have created your new virtual PC, once you have done that you just have to tell to this virtual PC that you'll use the virtual disk from another virtual PC previously created, this is quite easy. First select yout virtual machine, in this case "Remote Desktop" then you pick on "Configuration" button.

Locate the "Storage" section and under "SATA Controller" click on the icon that is show, this icon is for adding a virtual disk.

There will appear a message like this asking you about what disk you are going to set, you pick the button to select a previously created disk.

You pick your disk and it will be attached to your virtual PC, now you just remove the another one to keep just one. The next time you boot your virtual machine it will use the new disk.

Beginning Task Date Does Not Move in Project

I don't know if you use Microsoft Project as I do, but I have seen many times the case I'll describe next.

Imagine that you have this simple project schedule where all tasks depend each other.

Then, you realize that the subtask 2 is going to last 5 days indeed, so you make this fix and hope the task 3 to begin just when subtask 2 finishes. However, when you do this change the beginning date of task 3 doesn't move, only the final date moves, highlighting new dates.

Don't worry, it's not that your project has broken or something like that, the little detail here is that, although you have your tasks set to be automatically programmed, all tasks won't move its dates if there're progress recorded in them.

That's why if you want to have this date moved you must go to task details and clear any porcentage shown.

That's the way to do it, and you will see the task moving according to your changes.

So, you can now moving your dates as you wish, be careful with this because I have seen many project managers that use this trick to hide relays.

Executing SQL Script from Command Line

Yes, It's more pretty your SQL Server Management Studio, because you can just go to "File" option, find there "Open" and click on "File..." to load a SQL file (.sql) to execute it without problems.

But, have you ever tried to do so with a file create by this tool being large enough to freeze it literally when you open it? Well, in this case there's no way to execute that file through the tool.

Therefore, here we are with a SQL Server command that will help us with this task. You just have to keep in mind the command: sqlcmd, simple right?.

Let's say that we have a SQL server called "MY_SERVER" and my SQL instance "MY_INSTANCE" installed there. What I need now is to execute the following script "my_large_script.sql" located at "D:\Test".

It's important to consider that this command use Windows authentication by default, so it's only required to put this line in any command prompt:

sqlcmd -S MY_SERVER\MY_INSTANCE -i D:\Test\my_large_script.sql

However, if you are using SQL authentication it's neccesary to use your credential in this way:

sqlcmd -S MY_SERVER\MY_INSTANCE -U domain\my_user -P my_password -i D:\Test\my_large_script.sql

Inserting Rows o Columns in Excel Not Permitted

I'm opening an Excel file and when I try to insert a new row or column I get a message error giving me a large text about how this is not possible. I have seen many people facing this message, although this gives the solution, sometimes it's hard to understand what this message is trying to say.

But, what's happening? Let me tell you that you' re using all the rows or columns of the file, yes, believe it or not you are having information (even blank space) at least at the last row or column allowed. So, when you want to add a new one, Excel tries to delete this row or column because it will be out of range with the new element inserted.

The solution is going to the last column or row, to do so you can use this shortcut: Ctrl + Down arrow if you want to go to the last row or Ctrl + Right arrow to go to the last column, as shown in the images.

Then, you just have to select the entire row or column and delete, the next step is to save the file to to let Excel to detect this change, once you did this you'll be able to add one row or column, if you need more just follow the same procedure but deleting more rows or columns.

Fastest Way to Know the Size of Files or Folders

Hi there! this time I'm going to show you a quick way to know the total size of any select files or folders.

My idea is to give a sum up about how this task is accomplished typically so, you first select the elements you want to measure, this by using "Ctrl" key and click over the files or folders without releasing the key.

As a second step you click the right button of your mouse and select "Properties" option displayed in the menu.

With the procedure explain lines above you'll finally get here, where you will see the total amount of space used by the chosen elements.

And what is the trick? Well, it's quite simple but I know there are people who may not have acknowledge about this, just use the keys "Alt" and "Enter" and you'll skip the right-clicking thing and selecting "Properties". Linked Images in Sharepoint

Yes! I'm back hahaha at least in this moment, I was and am very busy but I have several posts pending of being published so I will try to publish more frequently.

In this opportunity I had to modify a Sharepoint site, because we are having a new process, so as a way to communicate this a site was designed, where graphically it's shown the new process divided into blocks.

But, the requirement itself was to have this graphic ready to be clicked with the purpose of sending the user to process block site. Yes, a linked image.

To do so, first, it's necessary to have edit permissions on the site. Second, we have to access to "Content Editor"though "Edit" webpart option and once we have got in there, click on "Rich Text Editor...".

You will get something like, in this step you have to pick the image you want to have the link, and select the "Hyperlink" icon.

Once you do that, a window will be shown asking you for the URL the image will use to redirect the user, here is where you type the site of this little image and press "OK".

Following this little step you will have your images linked quickly, having thus a much more nice site for your company.

Using Linked Servers in SQL Server

When you work with software you have in mind that everything is interconnected, even more when you're talking about servers. And things could get really ugly if you need to make queries and see that a part of your information is located in another server.

Fortunately, Microsoft SQL Server helps us in this situation giving us a feature that allows us to reference a different server and use it to make queries against it.

So, let's open SQL Server Management Studio, get in to the server and go to "Linked Servers" folder located in "Server Objects".

Now, you have to create a new linked server by using the right-click button and the appropriate option.

In this ocasion, just type the linked server name on the textbox and select the type of this, keep in mind that you can connect to other sources different from SQL Server.

After you do this, on the "Security" section you hace to specify the mapping between users and for the rest of users you'll have to select the connection mode.

Once you finish this, you will be able to query the data from your new linked server, this will appear under the "Linked Servers" folder. Since now you can build this kind of queries:

SELECT * FROM TEMP.CATALOGTEMP.DBO.TEMPTABLE

Reducing the Size of PowerPoint Presentations

At work it's always requiered to make presentations in PowerPoint... but sometimes these presentations have a considerable size that are needed to get smaller.

And that is the reason of my next tip, which will help you with your big-sized presentations. I will use a PowerPoint file with 3 images on it and make a copy of it to prove that it's possible to reduce dramatically it size, let me show you the file itself and the 2 equal files that I have created.

Now, I will work with "Test with compressing" file to compress its images, because that's the key. The only thing you have to do is to select one image and go to "Compress Pictures" option which is located within "Picture Tools" ribbon.

Later, in the dialog box shown uncheck "Apply only to this picture" and pick "E-mail (96 ppi)", after that select "OK" button.

At this point the only thing that you have to do is to save you file and you will notice the huge difference between one file and the another.

So, your presentation is ready to be sent in a email without having disck space problems.

Separating One Cell Text in Columns with Excel

Many times I asked for punctual information but , in contrast, I received more than I had asked for. For example, I just wanted the name of the applications of a computer, but I got much more in just one column. Therefore, I decided to use one Excel feature named "Text to Columns".

In the window that appears with this option you have to select the characters you are going to use as pattern to separate each row in columns, in this case I selected just "Tab" and got what is shown in the image, as you can appreciate the application descriptions will be in a separated column.

Having as a result this.

Once you get what you wanted you can proceed to removing extra columns.

Exporting All Installed Applications in Windows

When I helped someone to sell her laptop on internet I needed first to look at what applications were installed in this Windows 7. But, having this list in a file was not an easy task, therefore I searched on internet to get a way to do this.

Finally, I used at that moment the command line "wmic" which also allows you to export this list in few formats, always remember first to open your command line window and type the command as shown in the image.

As you can see it's very simple just don't forget to specify the destination path and the format you want your output file (the options are: HTML, Table, XML and more). Once you got your file open it and you will see something like this.

If you want to have this file in a more comfortable scheme just do what is said here and it will look like this.

Ready to be used.

Problem Copying Large Path Files

Some time ago I saw one problem as a consequence of a project, this consisted on moving all directories from one network device to an external drive as a backup policy. But, during the copying process happened problems with certain directories and files, an unknown error actually.

However, I got the impression that this problem could be produced by the large length of the paths of this directories or files and yes, that was the reason.

As a proof of this, I created a large path for a directory that just contains one text file, as you can see "D:\Large Named Directory" has a lot of similar inner directories, having the last one the "Large Named Textfile.txt" file. Pay attention, because it's not possible to create more directories inside the last one, because Windows has a limit... like everything in life.

Now, the image showed before represents the directories in the network drive, and we are going to copy them to a new directory located in the "local drive" which is represented by "D:\Another Large Directory to Copy Directory" directory, but when we do this simple procedure, we get this error message.

All of this because the file in the first location had a full path with less than 256 characters, however, in the new location it would have needed a full path with more than 256 characters which is not allowed by Windows. So, what you have to do in this situation is changing the path directory destination to the shortest name to not exceed the 256 path length limit.

Speeding Up your Queries with XPath

Finally I'm posting again, the time has been very tough with me... but I'm here again with one subject that I was thinking to post long time ago.

This is something that I found really curious when I was helping someone, this person asked me why in certain part of an stored procedure the programmer used the text() function to improve its execution time.

Actually, I didn't have idea at that moment why that function gave that kind of benefit, I mean, we had this:

What did we get using text() function? Well, we got an execution time of 5 seconds instead of the original 2 minutes and 23 seconds for getting text values from XML. Pretty cool right?.

Doing some research I realized that using text() function is also using XPath instead of using the UDX (extended operator) query functions that Microsoft SQL Server has. If you look at the execution plan of the query you will see that not using XPath functions makes you use more UDX functions that could hit considerably the performance.

Searching in Multiple Excel Tabs

This is something that I hadn't realized until I helped a partner with an Excel, the problem was with the searching because the results were really unexpected, she selected just a column in the tab "Perú" but the searching dialog showed results from "Perú" and "Colombia" tabs, really curious, isn't it?.

At that moment I thought "this could be very useful when you have a lot of tabs to search in!", so I will show you how to use it. As an example, I will use an Excel with many values corresponding each one to determined country, having at the same time many countries displayed as tabs.

The aim of this searching is to find the value 4034220, for this I can use the search all option but I know that this value is only in non-spanish countries, so I just start selecting those country tabs, to do this just click on the tabs you want while pressing "Ctrl" key. As you can see, this tabs will be marked in white color.

Once you have done this the only thing to do is to use the classic search option, put the value you're looking for and click "Find All" button.

With this, the dialog will show you the location of the value in the tabs you have chosen, just only the selected ones.

Translating Words on Firefox "on fly"

One advantage that Firefox brings with it it's the possibility of extending its functionality by using what is call add-on, a software component that added to your navigator will improve it a lot and help you many times.

In this occasion let me show how gTranslate can give you a hand to translate those words that you don't know what they mean, without the need of visiting a specific web to accomplish this task.

The first step is installing this add-on, this is very easy so just follow the link given in the earlier paragraph. If you have just already done this then it's time to use it, for this example I will translate an English text to Spanish so let's select the text.

At this point you need to right-click on the remarked text to display the gTranslate menu.

In this menu you will see the gTranslate icon with the phrase to be translated, just move the pointer over this and you will get the translation of this text, all this is possible because it connects directly to Google translator.

If you consider the add-on used another language for the translation, then you can select it manually by moving the mouse over "Change Languages" option to get an accurate result.

Thanks to this tool I do not waste time opening a translation web and copying the text in it.

Having Documents on PDF

It's very useful to have your files in pdf files because they are very practical, the problem is that many time you have your information in documents made in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and so on. Therefore, people don't have another way rather than walking around with this documents.

Moving Cells in Excel without Copying

I found once a way to move cells across Excel with a curious way that I haven't known before. The simple trick is just moving a cell or a group of them while pressing the "Shift" key.

First at all, select the range of cells you want to move, then click on the border together with the "Shift" key and begin the movement.

After this, just locate the cells where you want to place them.

Release the click and you will notice the new position of the cells.

The previous example was to place the cells on the right side of other cells, however you can put them also between a range.

Very curious thing, right?

Replacing Enters in Excel

I had just a week ago this case, my Excel had a cell containing 4 codes separated just by enters.Excel and other Microsoft Office applications have an option to replace any kind of text, but what happen if you want to replace no-printable characters like enters.

I had just a week ago this case, my Excel had a cell containing 4 codes separated just by enters.

Then, to have this codes separate by "-" I decided to replace the enters, to do this was necessary to enter this character in the "Search" textbox, this is possible by typing "Alt + 0010" and a "." is shown flashing, after that I put the "-" which was the replacement.

Finally I got my objetive, a tip to bear in mind is that to put the enter character it's necessary to type 0010 with the numeric pad. Otherwise, nothing will happen.

Displaying Current Slide with PowerPoint

At work I've always seen this situation: someone is giving a presentation with a ppt or pptx extension in full screen mode, when suddenly there's a person who request coming back to an specific slide.

This is how the expositor takes a break and gets out of the full screen mode to select the given slide.

But, when it's time to display the full screen mode everybody uses the shortcut "F5" having as result the first slide of the presentation, so if the slide to be presented is 123 of 234 slides you will have to click next, next and more next.

To avoid this annoying situation just locate on the slide you want to start from and use the shortcut "Shift + F5", in this way you are going to be where you want in full screen mode.

Using "Follow Up" in Lotus Notes

As a constant user of Lotus Notes I have to say that one of the best features I have found in this tool is "Follow Up" which helps me a lot to don't lose the important mails I have to answer as soon as possible.

To remark one mail in this way, the first thing to do is to select it.

Then, you have to go to the "Follow Up" option (remember that the images are from a Spanish version) and click on "Add or Edit Flag...".

Suddenly, Lotus Notes will pop up the following window, where you can give this message a priority and actions, configure these and click "OK".

In this way, you will mark the massage with a priority represented by a flag icon together the mail.

But, if you want to see all your mails marked with some kind of priority you have to display the "Follow Up" section located at the bottom of the Lotus window.

Once you have expanded this section you will be able to see all your important mails, only the ones you have to review immediately.

However, doing the previous step I wrote above could sound very boring, it really is, this is why there's a faster way to do this: using the "Quick Flag" option, with this you will mark the message with a flag.

When you finish your work with the prioritized mail, you can remove the mark with the "Remove Flag" option.

As you can see, this is a powerful option when you have tons of mails there.

Losing my Windows Live Account, be Careful

Honestly, I have been using this Microsoft account since it was called Hotmail, but in all that time I hadn't been used frequently the account to chat through Windows Live Messenger.

Also it is good to say that I use an email client, Thunderbird specifically, so logging in to the Windows Live webpage was not something that I usually did. This is how I downloaded all the mails to my PC, which is really useful, but one Sunday weeks ago I need to chat with someone, having the need to connect in my Windows Live Messenger... and when I tried to do so I found out that I could not be logged in.

I was absolutely sure about the password I had used there, but it continued to reject my input so I decided to enter through the webpage, showing me the following message.

Believe it or not my account had been blocked! I had no idea about what it would be the reason for this, until I suddenly remembered that sometime ago my mail address had been used to send spam, but looking into a lot of forums I convinced myself that there was no solution for this, just to wait spammers to change to another mail address.

However, I got my account blocked anyway, therefore I began with the password reset process, but I have a problem here: I couldn't remember what my secret answer was, indeed I even hadn't idea about my secret question. This is how I contacted the customer support.

Here we go, I had to fulfill this form, which would be used to validate my identity, as you can see some items of this form are very specific.

The main problem I faced was with the country because when I created the account I used a fake country such as England, USA o France, at that moment I couldn't remember and neither now haha. Nevertheless, I tried to complete this form anyway it could be made.

With this, Microsoft created a private forum to solved my case, the first answer I received was:

Tracing Excel Cell Precedents

When we talk about functions in Excel, sometimes they are quite easy to understand what cells are used in them, but I faced situations where complex functions are too complicated to understand them with a view.

It is the opportunity to use one useful Excel feature which have helped me a lot at work.

Let's consider a function which use cells from another sheet. The first thing is to select the cell to be evaluated, in this case is in the C column. Once you are there, select the tab "Formulas" and inside this click on the "Trace precedents" item.

This will show an arrow indicating that the selected cell requires data from another cell located in another sheet, to go to this cell you just have to double click on the arrow.

With the double click Excel will show a dialog giving you the list of Excel sheets that the cell we are reviewing use for its calculation, select the sheet you want to go to and press "OK".

Then you will be translated to the sheet you selected, once you finish working there, how could you come back to the original cell? Well, what I do is using the "Go To" (accessible through "F5" key) and without doing nothing I just press "OK".

Quickly you will come back to the beginning of this procedure.

To finish this auditing you will erase these arrows by using the "Remove arrows" option.

In this moment, you are going to have your Excel as usual to be used.

Keeping Last Page You Saw in Adobe Reader

Once you are in "Preferences" windows, put yourself on "Documents" section and check the "Restore last view settings when reopening documents" square, and press "OK" button.

With this, the next time you open a file you will appear at the last page you have read, able to continue.

How to Use PC Inspector File Recovery

When I have problems with files missed in my PC I always use PC Inspector File Recovery to recover these files. But, since my point of view, it's not so easy to use, but with the step shown here you will be able to use it with no problems.

When you run the application, the first thing to do is to select the language you are going to use, remember tu execute with administrator credentials.

Close the window showed after selecting the language.

Once you have done that, select the "search" icon located at first place in the left panel.

With this, the application will show a dialog where you have to select the "Physical drive" tab to force the program to find any logical drives. This is because we could find a formatted partition even in the chosen physical drive.

But finding logical drives requires a command indicating what disk physical sector will be scanned, you ca in this moment to choice all disk sectors or limited range of them, after selecting sectors, click on the "check" button.

Now you only have to wait until searching finalize, it could takes many minutes depending on your disk size.

In this point you will have all the logical drives (partitions) found on your disk, to check what missed files could be inside them, you have to select one by selecting it and clicking on the "check" button.

While the application is listing all files found in the logical driver you will see this dialog box.

As you will see, the program will list all files, the missing files will be shown in green, having the possibility to recover them.

If you want to recover one of these recovered files, you have to use the "Save to..." option which is in the right click menu on the file.

Just select the destination folder, and you will have your file recovered.

Remember that not always a file is recovered as it was before deleting process so it's possible to have a non working file.

Searching Text Inside Files

Many times I have faced a situation where I had to find which Excel files have inside them a specific code, and that meant I had to open all Excel files (more than 30) to look at inside if the code was there.

For these opportunities it's very useful to use a Windows 7 characteristic which allows you to find inside all the Excel files that are within a folder. Honestly, I haven't proved if it works with any kind of files.

As I explained before, the aim of these procedure is to find what Excel files have a code inside, considering that we are just looking for the files contained in a particular folder.

First you have to select the folder you know files inside have the code you are looking for, after that in the text box located at the right corner type the code and press "Enter", you will notice that explorer shows a message pointing that there was not successful results ("No items match your search"), this is because no files have a name like the code you entered.

In this case you have to select the "File Contents" option at the right, which will force Windows to look into all the files contained in the folder.

Once you make this selection you will have to wait until the progress bar finishes the loading, this progress will be visible in the path box in green color.

Finally, the files which contain the code will be listed one by one until all the files got checked, having in this way the results from your search.

It depends on you to select which file you require.
