Preview of the Dungarvan 10 mile road race - Sun 29th Jan 2012

The big race in Munster next weekend is of course the Dungarvan 10 mile in Waterford. There was a limit of 1,500 entries for this race and it was full at the end of last December. There will be no entries taken on the day.

Only a few years ago, this race only attracted a few hundred runners. The organisers, West Waterford AC have built on it year after year until it is now one of the main 10 mile road races in the country. This of course didn't happen by accident. They put on a well organised event every year and this is reflected in the fact that people keep going back.

At this stage, all entrants should have received their race packs by post. The main item in this is the race number which has a timing chip on the back.

Mallow 10...Please note that Mallow AC will be taking entries in the Sports Centre for their own 10 mile race on Monday, the 19th of March. Details on the Running in Cork website

Location...What I am going to concentrate on here are additional details that may not be so obvious on the race website.

Directions...If you are coming from the Cork direction on the main N25 road, you will need to turn right at the first roundabout at the entrance to the town. As you drive through Dungarvan, you will see a church on the right.....

Take the right just after the church and the Sports Centre is just down this road...

Please note that unless you arrive early, parking in this area may be full. There are plenty of other areas to park in the town.

Distances...Sports Hall to Start Line...1 km, Finish Line to Sports Hall...1.5 kms
Course...The Dungarvan 10 mile road race has a reputation of being a fast course. If your target is trying out for a PB then this is the one to run. The route takes in a small loop through the town before leaving Dungarvan to take in a bigger loop in the countryside.

The start point is approximately 1 km from the Sports Centre. The road here is very wide and there is plenty of space. Please note that your time starts with the gun. Even with 1000+ runners taking part, there is no major delay in everyone starting at more or less the same time.

As you can see from the image below, the road rises just after the start. Coming at the start of the race, it's a lot easier than later when you're tired.

After an initial steep section, the going gets easier as you begin the loop around the town. As you can see from the image below, you keep running straight.....take in a short loop.....and then run downhill and re-join the main road and turn right.

You then run back down towards the start line....passing the 1 mile mark....and then on towards the roundabout at the entrance to the town, you take a left and out the main road to the south....

The course here is now very fast. You will be running inside the hard shoulder, the road is flat up to the 2 mile mark before going gradually downhill......then it's time to turn off right...

Now you are onto a quiet narrow country road and the road rises again gently...

Eventually, the road widens as it approaches the town and an industrial area. The road here is pretty fast and flat. Not long after the 3 mile mark, you rejoin the main road...

However, you're only on this short section of main road for about 100 metres. Then it's straight through the roundabout and take the 2nd left...

.....and then it's onto a reasonly flat road as you leave the town...

The next mile or so is reasonably flat. There are a few very small drags but certainly nothing worth noting. Just after the 5 mile mark, you reach the most westerly point as the course takes a sharp left. As you approach the corner, you will see other faster runners at the other side of the field...

This section is narrow but dead flat until you turn right at the next junction...

Just around the corner, you soon pass the 6 mile mark. This is followed by a gentle uphill section.....

Nothing too serious but coming at 6 miles, it can have an impact. Eventually, the road flattens out and this is followed by a steep downhill section...

At the end of the hill, you cross a small bridge over the River Brickey and take a sharp left...

The road now follows the river so it's dead flat............(well, slightly downhill but nothing that you would notice ;o)

It's like this for about 1.3 miles as you pass the 7 and 8 mile mark along the way. At around 8.2 miles, you rejoin the main N25 (pic above) and you run inside the hard shoulder as you head back towards Dungarvan. Initially the road is flat but soon begins to climb. It never gets too serious but coming at 8.3 miles, it can have a huge impact if you are tired. This is arguably the hardest part of the course.

Soon, you pass the 9 mile mark and you are now back on familar ground as you are on the same section of road that you were running on earlier. The road begins to flatten out and it stays like this until you reach the roundabout at the entrance to the town. At this stage, you are getting very close to the finish....

Just after the roundabout, you'll see the sign for the turn off to the left...

Once you turn left, it's only a short run of about 100 metres to the finish.

At the finish line, there will be a timing mat which will record your time as you cross it. The sports hall is 1.5 kms from the finish.

Waterford...Results of the Colligan Cup 5 mile - Sun 22nd Jan 2012

The 5 mile race in Colligan Wood attracted 144 runners.
From the West Waterford website.....The 24th annual Colligan Cup sponsored by David Kiely of Kiely Monumentals took place last Sunday at the well-known Colligan Wood. The juvenile race got underway at 1 p.m. and at 2 p.m. the clock was started and worked in reverse until all the runners were on the course. It was the usual case of watching all those in front of you, trying to maintain as even a pace as possible and deciding whether to stay with those in your group or to move it on. Of course no watches were allowed and there was great camaraderie and fun as the runners covered the 5 mile course and as like all the previous 23 years, it was over the last lap that it got tricky. All the runners were at this stage within 200-300 metres of each other and all edging closer and closer to the finishing line and despite everyone’s best intentions to stick to an even pace throughout, it’s always the case that when other runners are so close in front of you, the natural thing to do is to pick up the pace which so many did but not Conor Blackwell who stuck to his guns despite the huge crowd of runners around him and just as the clock struck 0.00 it was Conor who crossed the line and the loud cheer that erupted for Conor alerted all the other runners to get to the finish line pronto but for Conor the job was done and the title was his and his name will now be on the plaque in the wood along with all the previous winners.

Entries for the Mallow 10 in Dungarvan...

Mallow AC will have an entry desk for their 10 mile road race in Dungarvan next Sunday. The Mallow '10' is on Monday, the 19th of March at 12:30pm and it only costs €15 to pre-enter...and that includes a Dry-Fit top for the first 1,000 entries.

From the organisers.....Congrats to all the participants for creating another record, we had 154 finishers for this series, just 3 short of the overall best achieved in race 3 in the Pre Christmas series. Tonight we had 41 new participants that didn’t take part in the Pre Christmas series, welcome abroad and I hope you enjoyed the event. It was an ideal night for running and despite the strong breeze on the lower road, times were impressive, a lot of people minded themselves over the Christmas.
The race format tonight was Lucky Dip with a Draw taking place before the race on finishing positions, these prizes will be presented at next week’s race. The format for race 2 is “Match the Pre Selected Time”. For this race Pre Selected times will be randomly selected and the winners will be those athletes who match or are the nearest to these times. In this event you are allowed to wear your watch, this will give people another chance to pace themselves for the distance. Tonight’s staggered start work a treat and thanks again for your co operation. We will implement this system for all the races in this series.

Waterford...Waterford City Winter League - Thurs 5th Jan to 9th Feb 2012

Registration for this winter league is at the Regional Sports centre in Waterford City. Entry on the night is €4 and you have a choice of two routes........a short route of approx 2.5 miles OR a longer route of approx 5 miles.

These events are suitable for runners of all abilities. For safety purposes, all runners must wear a high visibilty vest. Entry on the night is €4.

Entries are taken at 6:30pm with the races start at 7pm.

Kerry...Killarney Lions Club Winter 5k Running League

Killarney Lions club is organising a Winter/Spring running league starting on January 9th 2012. The league will run on Monday nights starting at 7pm sharp. The league will run over 8 nights. To be eligible for prizes participants must run 5 races.

Everybody is welcome to participate from walkers to juveniles to experienced runners and the league is organised in such a way that all standards are catered for. In the first week everybody will start the run at the same time. As usual everybody’s finishing time is recorded.

The following week the slowest finishers will start first and the quickest runners will start last. This gives everybody an equal chance of winning the run each week. League tables are compiled using the participants finishing position. The runner that finishes first scores 1 point. The runner that finishes thirty first scores 31 points. The runner with the lowest points total at the end of the series wins the league. Staggered start times are adjusted each week according to new finishing times.

There are 8 runs in the series. To be eligible for prizes participants must complete 5 runs. Registration will be at the Kerry Parents and Friends building from 6pm on Monday Jan 9th. All participants MUST WEAR HIGH VISIBILITY VESTS.

Entry fee is €5 per race or €35 for 8 races. Prizes are being given in the usual categories. Get the new year off to a healthy and fun start and all in aid of a good cause.

Directions.......Registration is at the Kerry Parests and Friends Building at the Monastry next to the Cathedral at the western side of the town of Killarney. If you are coming from the direction of Cork or Tralee, take the bypass that goes around to the north of the town. At the last roundabout (pictured A below...all trees, no buildings)....take the second left and head south.

Each race will start at 7pm in the grounds of Kildalton College which is in Pilltown, a few kms to the east of Carrick-on-Suir. This league is run over a very safe and well-lit five kilometre route within the college grounds. It affords seasoned runners, novices or beginners the ideal opportunity to meet and train at a time of year when it can be difficult to consistently train on the road due to the shortened hours of daylight.

The SuperValu Winter League returns after a short break for Christmas on Tuesday, January 3rd 2012 at Kildalton College, Piltown. The clock will start at 7pm sharp with runners starting at two-minute intervals based on their times over the course to date. Remember to bring the number you received at registration and to wear a high-viz vest while running. It is not too late to join this year's league which will continue every Tuesday evening for the next few weeks until Tuesday, the 14th of February. This weekly run is ideal for anyone who has resolved to get fit for 2012 and will be followed by the club's very popular Fit for Life programme - so dust off the runners and come along to Kildalton any Tuesday evening. Waterford...Dungarvan winter league - Wed 4th Jan - 15th Feb 2012

West Waterford AC hold a winter league in the town of Dungarvan every winter. Now in it's 18th year, the race has featured before on the Nationwide programme on RTE 1. They will be resuming the league on Wednesday evening, the 4th of January at 7pm and continue until the 15th of February.

On each night, they have a choice of two routes....a short 2.5 mile route and a longer 5.7 mile route. These runs are suitable for runners of all abilities, especially those starting out. Registration is at the Dungarvan Sports Centre.

Details from the organisers....
18th ANNUAL ALLROUNDER SPORTS WINTER LEAGUE
You may choose between the short route which is 2.5 miles and the long route which is 5.75 miles. Naturally we would encourage all newcomers to running to opt for the short route and then if they feel comfortable with that they may then move to the long run. We will be at the centre from 6.45 p.m. onwards for registration so get there in plenty of time for the first night as the clock will start at 7.20 pm sharp. At 7.20 when everyone has their number which must be worn on the front of your reflective bib, the clock will start and all runners will be starting together for the first night. Our advice to you for the first night is not to go off too fast, just concentrate on your own run and if you have never ran before just jog a bit and walk a bit and before you know it you will have finished. The aim is to improve a little each week. Even if you can’t make tonight just come along any night that you can, it’s never too late to join.

If you already have a number then when you arrive at the centre tonight go upstairs and register at the desk on the right. The fee will be €2 for members of West Waterford and €3 for non-members. When you have registered go down into the hall and when called head out to the front door. All those doing the short route will start together for the first night as will all those doing the long route. Don’t forget to bring your number with you tonight and to wear your reflective bib, luminous jackets are not enough they MUST be reflective, they can be bought in the All-Rounder and runners will not be permitted to run without a proper reflective bib, no exceptions.

For those who have yet to register, aim to be at the centre before 7 as there will be plenty looking to register. Go upstairs and go to the desk on the left. You must fill out a form with your details and you will be issued with your number which you wear every night of the league. The fee will be €7 for members of West Waterford and €8 for non-members and from then on it will just be €2 or €3, depending on whether you are a member or not.

WINTER LEAGUE RULES FOR ALL RUNNERS
1.      All runners must wear reflective bibs, luminous jackets or tops are not sufficient for running in the dark. It is part of the club’s health and safety policy that all runners wear reflective gear so please obey this rule. Proper reflective bibs can be bought at the All-Rounder shop and we will be strictly reinforcing this rule.
2.      You must wear your number at the front of your bib as your number will be recorded as you cross the line and we can then work out your time. Please pin your number either above or below the reflective strip on your bib, pinning your number on the reflective strip will mean that you will not be visible to traffic.
3.      Watches, headphones, ipods or MP3 players are strictly forbidden. You must be able to hear the instructions of the stewards and you also need to be able to hear the traffic from all directions, there will be no exceptions to this rule. Stewards will take note of your number and we will know who you are, please don’t let this happen.
4.      You must register each week upstairs at the desk on the right with the proper fee.
5.      When you reach the finish line, just cross the line and stay in position. Your number must be recorded twice so please stay in position until you reach the stairs at the back of the centre.
6.      A box will be available for you to leave your keys in while you run and your keys will be available for collection at the top of the stairs after you finish your run-keys are left at your own risk and no responsibility will be accepted for misplaced keys.
7.      You may change from the short route to the long route and vice-versa as long as you tell us; we will issue with a new number but please let us know as it will distort the results otherwise.
8.      Keep an eye out in the weekly papers for regular updates on the league especially regarding starting times which will vary from week to week so we will keep you informed via the weekly papers as well as on our own website www.westwaterfordathletics.org
9.       From week 2 onwards, everyone will have different starting times and you must go at the time given for you. Please respect that with over 300 runners at any given night that everyone must go at their allotted time.

PARKING
There are ample parking spaces available at Scanlon’s yard, Strand Street and also at the look out. Each of these is only a short distance from the sports centre. We also ask that you refrain from parking in front of anyone’s house.

Tipperary...Clonmel evening series - Wed 11th Jan-15 Feb

Clonmel AC are continuing their 4k evening series of races on Wednesday evening, the 11th of January 2012 at 7pm. They continue every Wednesday evening until the 15th of February.

Directions........The 4k loop is located at the east side of Clonmel...

Race entries and start/finish are at Brothers of Charity car park, Silversprings, on the L3218 St.Patrick's Road, near the Moangarrif Roundabout....

The race itself is two laps of the N24 road, Davis Road, St Patrick's Road, mostly on the footpath/hard-shoulder, with all right-hand turns. A few slight rises and falls, but nothing difficult.

Each night there is a different race format, mainly predict your own time (individual and team) as well as a Lucky Dip race based on finishing positions. The main emphasis is that everyone participates at their own pace and all have a chance of winning. In the 2010 series, they presented 86 prizes among 73 athletes with some athletes winning twice.

By the end of last Friday (16th Dec) and the close of the 15 euro early bird entry fee, the John Treacy Dungarvan 10 mile road race had over 1,200 entered. This is well over double the numbers at the same period in 2010 when they had less that 500. Considering that there are less than 300 entries left at that stage, it is very likely that it will close in a few days time and certainly well before January 16th closing date.

It now costs €20 to enter which is still pretty good value considering that the it includes a dry-fit running top. This is a well run race over a fast 10 mile course. If you are considering it then enter straight away. The race website is HERE

Dungarvan '10' entries closing soon

Entries for the Dungarvan '10' have just passed the 1,000 mark and are well on the way to the race limit of 1,500. If you are interested in doing this race then you should enter straight away to avoid disappointment. If you enter today Friday (16th Dec) then the cost is only €15. For a well organised race that give out a dry-fit running top at the end, that's really good value.

From the 17th of December onwards, the cost is €20 until the limit of 1,500 entries is reached.

The Dungarvan 10 mile road race is on Sunday, the 29th of January 2012.

Waterford...Results of the Waterford Half-Marathon - Sat 10th Dec 2011

There was a big increase in numbers this year with 1155 taking part as opposed to 690 last year. The winner of the mens race was Gary O'Hanon of Clonliffe Harriers in a time of 67:41. The womens race was won by Gladys Ganiel of North Belfast Harriers in a time of 77:22.
