Now while dresses made of meat, chocolate, and lettuce might not be practical, it still amazes me how people can use everyday objects to create wearable works of art. It reminded me of a fashion show I saw on TV, where all the clothes were made out of everyday objects such as light bulbs and how a girl at my high school made her prom dress out of Skittles wrappers for her senior project. It got me thinking: What other everyday objects do people use to make clothes? So here are some of the weird household items people use to make dresses, purses and a lot more.

Newspaper

Flowers

Car Radiator Copper

Money

(But imagine all the shoes you could buy with that)

Duct Tape

Food
The one pair of sweats you just can't live without. The ones that are perfect for lounging in on weekends, doing homework, watching TV, running errands, and after practice. But it has always been considered a fashion faux paux to wear sweats to out in public unless you're in college or high school. And even now most high school girls don't wear sweats to school unless they're Lululemons, which are yoga pants. While they may be some of the most comfortable things ever, they don't have the same comfort as a slightly baggy pair of sweats. Well guess what. The day has come that sweatpants have become fashionable. Who would have predicted the day I would open up my monthly Bazaar to see celebrities and models alike strutting red carpets and runways in harem cut sweats? Designers such as Alexander Wang (left) and Michael Kors alike have sent harem sweats down the runway and all I can say is "Would you wear them?". The harem pant in general is something usually saved for fashionistas, celebs, models, and girls that are at least in their 20s. Very few teenagers I know would wear them to school or even to something more formal, yet they look way more comfy than a pair of tight jeans. I admit I wouldn't be the first to don them, its a look than takes pure confidence to pull off, but if you have the confidence you can definitely have some serious fun styling them.

But if the runway style harem sweats aren't for you there are some alternatives to get the comfort of sweats with the style of jeans. There are some great sweats that are have some of the harem style without being as baggy or pleated. Some good ones are the Stem Jersey Crop Pants and the Hinge Roll Cuff Cotton Pants. My favorite is my pair of Jolt pants from Nordstrom (right). They look like a skinny black pants (or black leggings if you wear a long enough top) but are made of a really soft cotton, so you feel like you're wearing sweats.

Oh my black dress. And tomorrow? My black dress again, and how about the next day too?" What if you wore the same dress every single day for an entire year? I don't know about you, but there are so few things in my closet I would wear everyday, I can count them on one hand. (But then again with Seattle weather can you blame me?) Well Sheena Matheiken of New York figured out how. She wore the same short black dress every day for an entire year to raise awareness for the Akanksha Foundation, which brings education to kids living in Indian slums.

That said, I find her ingenious. I can't remember how many times I've gone to wear something, just to remember I had just worn in a few days ago and not wanting to end up wearing the same outfit again. But Sheena has solved the puzzle I've been struggling with for years. By doing simple things such as layering with tights, pants, and other dresses and just plain accessorizing, she has created a book of look after different look, all while wearing the same dress. In many of the pictures you would never know it's the same dress each day. Not when it looks like a top in one picture and a jacket in another. That just shows what a little creative thinking and a great versatile piece (like Sheena's Eliza Starbuck dress) can do for your wardrobe, and in this economy it's just what we need. Need a little more inspiration? I know that's a total understatement, but it's true. Right now Runway2Hallway in going on hiatus to do some new construction and possibly add some new features to the site. So while everyone looks forward to a new year and a new decade, I thought to take a look a look at the fashions of decades past. To do this I was able to find archives of old magazine covers, belonging to some of the most popular fashion magazines, Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, and Seventeen. Not only do some of these covers date back to the 1940s, but they are fun, pretty and artistic. So it makes sense that every woman dreams of having a pair of Christian Louboutin heels, even if they're doll-sized. Louboutin designed its first Barbie, the Cat Burglar Barbie by Christian Louboutin, and it only cost.... $150. Despite the high price, this Barbie sold out in only one day. Now there is currently a waiting list for the next shipment of dolls. The fiery red-haired doll comes with a tight black catsuit and head band as well as four pairs of mini Louboutins. The red-soled minis included with the doll are strappy gold "Differa" heels, chic black "Miss" ankle boots, hot pink "Claudia" heels, and knee-high leopard print "Altameche" boots. All of the killer heels come with their own Louboutin boxes and little red shoe bags. Also included is a mini Paris travel journal. This won't be the only Barbie to don Louboutin stilettos, new Louboutin Barbies will come out in the new year in Cannes, safari and showgirl themes. If only they had designer Barbies when I was little...

The dances, the sports games, the social events, and driving are all things people can look forward to in high school, unlike the homework and school lunches. I’ve been forward to homecoming since the end of 9th grade (in our district high school starts in 10th grade). You get to get all dressed up like a movie star and go dance and party with all your friends, what wouldn’t you get excited about? Our homecoming is the end of next month, so I have a while to look for a dress. But yesterday while at the mall with my mom, we decided to look around the mall and maybe try on some dresses, just to see what kind of selection we would have. Most high school girls wear short dresses to homecoming and longer dresses to winter formals, however our school wears long dresses to homecoming and short to our spring dance. Little did I know how hard it would be to find a long dress for homecoming. I want a long, pretty, kinda simple dress (think Taylor Swift in 'You Belong With Me' in a different color (above)). We to every possible store in Bellevue and Redmond and still didn’t find a thing. There’s still the possibility of Downtown Seattle, but I’m not counting on it. It’s a good thing I have a month to look for a dress, because I’m going to need it.

So I’m asking you: Where did you find your perfect Homecoming dress?

Honestly I don’t know how some people could live without it, because they have absolutely everything. And these days there are even more reasons to love Target because now several designers have created lines for Target, such as Alexander McQueen, Jonathan Saunders, Sigerson Morrison, Anna Sui, and jewelry designer Anna Sheffield, just to name a few. And now designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte (seen left in Harper’s Bazaar From 7th Avenue to Sesame Street spread) are to be added to the list of designers to grace the racks of Target with their designs. One of the ones I instantly became obsessed with was leather motorcycle jackets. As I did some back-to-school shopping at the Nordstrom sale I absolutely had to check out a few of the black leather jackets and ended up taking home a Jolt leather jacket of my own. Still I am as obsessed as ever with this new trend. Balmain has always been one of my favorites for its fun, edgy shows. They created this awesome jacket that also has the signature piqued shoulders that were shown throughout the show.

Yves St. Laurent featured a lot of amazing leather jackets in their Fall '09 show, but I love how the studded collar on this one gives a little more edge.

Twenty8Twelve has a lot of fun, different and edgy pieces in their new fall collection, but this is one of my favorite pieces because it is so simple but classic.

Rag & Bone's latest pieces feature clean and classic silhouettes so it's no surprise their take on the motorcycle jacket is the same.

Truth & Pride did a lot of motorcycle style jacket and vests this fall but this is my favorite. They are the timeless basics that never go out of style and only change slightly in style from decade to decade. These are also the things you can splurge on without feeling that sense of “buyers remorse”, knowing they are pieces you will have for years to come and can see as a investment instead of a “splurge”. And a key to smart shopping in this economy is building a recession-proof closet, full of classic pieces that will last you years longer than the current economic slump.

1. As you shop look for staples. These are items that have stood the test of time, whether it’s a certain color (black), fabric (denim, silk), print (plaid), or silhouette (bootcut pants). These are what make a classic, a classic.

2. Look for classic/basic items to build up your closet. My favorite example of this is “Tim Gunn’s 10 Essentials” list from Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style. The original is listed below.
Tim Gunn’s 10 Essentials
-Basic Black dress, like the Lanvin dress (left)
- Trench coat
- Dress pants
- Classic shirt
- Jeans
- Any Occasion Top
- Skirt
- Day Dress
- Jacket
- Sweatsuit Alternative
Bonus: one indulgent trendy item

I also took the list and changed a few things to make it suit a normal teen girl.

Runway2Hallway’s version of Tim Gunn’s 10 Essential Items

- basic black dress (a timeless classic and a girl’s best friend)
- dress coat (a coat you can wear over a formal dress or with a skirt/dress pant)
- Classic dress pants (good for job/college interviews, internships, formal occasions, work, etc.)
- classic white shirt (classic. enough said.)
- Skirt. I’ve changed this to one casual skirt, like a denim mini, and one classic skirt, like a pencil skirt you could wear for the same events as the dress pants.
- Jacket.
- Day dress. Personally I don’t just have one dress for daytime all year. I would have at least on for spring/summer and one for fall/winter.
- Any occasion top (perfect for a nice dinner, worn with skirt or dress pants, or for shopping with friends or a date.)
- Jeans. Again, personally I have more than one pair of jeans but if you have to have one pair I’d go with a bootcut or straightleg denim. they never go out of style.
- Sweatsuit. Not even a sweatsuit really, just a pair of nicer sweats than you can wear out running errands or to the library on the weekends.
Bonus: Trendy item. Everyone needs one.

3. Stick to what you know. do you have that one item in your closet that you couldn’t live without? That thing that’s so basic and yet you have it in a millions different colors and is a staple in your wardrobe. everyone does. For me it’s my Old Navy ribbed racerback tanks or my Rubbish long sleeve tees (right). For my friend it’s her v-neck Hanes white t-shirts. If you know you wear it all the time, all year round then don’t be afraid to stock up.

4. When really splurging think of it as a investment. Ask yourself, am I going to wear it enough for this price? This year? Next year? Will it still be in style next year? What’s the cost per year? (see Shopping Like it’s 1982 part 1). Think about it and if you’re not sure sleep on it. That was the year of the last major recession in the United States. Now it’s 2009 and once again everyone’s on a tighter budget. That’s a bummer especially with back-to-school shopping season around the corner. It’s now to the point where fashion magazines are printing articles on saving money and shopping smart. So I thought I would do the same. After reading all the articles and doing research on my own, I’ve come to the best solution. Shopping smart in today’s economy requires two things; (1) Spending smart and (2) Building a timeless/recession-proof closet.

Shopping Like It’s 1982 Part 1: Spend Smart

1. Spend money on classic, quality staples and simple basics (see part 2 coming July 25)

2. If buying a trendier item go cheaper. Instead of spending $50 on a trendy blouse at Nordstrom, spend $20 at Forever 21. Good stores where you can find cheaper trendier items are stores like Forever 21, Love Culture, H&M or Wet Seal.

3. If you’re going to splurge, splurge on staples that will be in style for the next few years, as long as the item is a staple you can view it as a investment. When splurging a common rule is to try to divide the cost by the number of times you would wear it in a year to get the cost per wear. The lower the cost per wear, the better the investment.

4. Look for sales whenever possible. Check newspapers and websites, store websites will let you know of most sales. There all also websites dedicated to finding you the cheapest price on a item and tracking down sales. Some websites to check are
· theOutnet.com
· shopittome.com
There are also websites that will give you online coupon codes such as
· retailmenot.com
· couponcabin.com

5. Check for bridge lines. Love your designer fashions? Well now designers are coming out with lower-budget lines. Converse and Alexander McQueen both have lines at Target, Charlotte Ronson has the i heart ronson line at JCPenney, Vera Wang has the Simply Vera Vera Wang line at Kohl’s, Coach has its new lower cost line Poppy, and now Marc Jacobs has his new line Don’t Miss the Marc by Marc Jacobs (see right) where all items are under $200 and most are under $100. You just have to look to find lower cost lines by your favorite designers, and these days you don’t have to look hard.

6. Don’t be afraid to scour sales racks. You never know what you will find. It’s true sometimes you won’t find anything, but every once in a while you’ll find a hidden gem. Some of my favorite clothes have been found on the sales rack. A pair of $200 True Religion jeans I got for $97, a $120 Juicy Couture printed jacket I got for $60 and a $180 Coach handbag I paid $70 for were all found on sales racks. It’s one of the easiest ways to save when shopping

7. Check outlet stores. Different brands have factory outlet stores that are nothing but clearance. You can search your area for outlet mall where they will have a bunch of outlet stores together. Nike, Coach and Nordstrom all have really good outlets where you can find good prices and quality merchandise.

8. Raid your friend’s/mom’s closet. We all borrow and trade clothes with our friends anyway. Sometimes a good clothes swap party is a good way to mix up your wardrobe.

9. Raid your own closet. You know those clothes you have pushed in the back of your closet and sit at the bottom of your drawers? Pull them out again. Maybe you’ll find they fit better, they’re more your style than before, or maybe they’ve come back in style.

10. Don’t be afraid to hit vintage and re-sale shops. Most often the clothes have barely been worn more than once or twice and you can get them for way cheaper.

It means the stores are finishes with their huge summer clearance sales and are bringing in the fall fashions. Some stores bring it all out at once (aka the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale) while other stores gradually bring it out week after week until the store is ready for fall (aka American Eagle). Either way, fall fashion is here and I couldn’t be happier. This spring during the Fall 2009 Ready-to-Wear collections a few trends were obvious. Some were luxe fabrics such as velvet, leather, fur, feathers, satins, and croc, (who said a recession can’t be luxurious?) bright colors (neon), black and classic pieces. Also the accessories where big, bright, edgy, and pure glamour. I have to say the retro look was big this fall as designers drew inspiration from decades past such as the 80’s (Gucci) and the 60’s and 70’s (Giambattitsta Valli). By retro I don’t mean the same neon leggings of the 80’s or tie-dye of the 60’s. No there is no such thing on these runways, the designers put their own twists on old pieces and trends to create looks completely modern and fabulous. Out of all the fabulous shows several stood out such as Gucci (all around great), Alexander McQueen(for the outrageous clown makeup), Balmain(for creating a show where there practically isn’t anything I wouldn’t wear), Hermes (gorgeous jackets), Lanvin (little black dresses), Yves St. Laurent (motorcycle jackets) and Balenciaga (every piece was stunning). If any one of these shows was any indication, this year’s fall fashion will be some of the best yet. So get ready for fall and back-to-school shopping, and to help know what trends to look for and which will be big for fall check back here at Runway2Hallway.

Some are viewing the Fall fashions shows, the Nordstrom anniversary sale, and the fact I get to wear shorts, tanks tops, flip flops and a tan (hopefully) for three months. And this year there's one more thing for me to look forward to... the debut of Coach's new accessory line Poppy tomorrow. As a handbag fanatic, and huge Coach fan I'm excited to see the new line. Especially since it's supposed to be more affordable than the usual $200-$300 bags, which in times like these, is music to my ears and my wallet. From the peeks I've managed to sneak, the line looks promising, with bright leathers, even brighter patent leathers, metallics, sequins, colorful prints and fun trims. The collection debuts tomorrow online and is available in many major department stores such as Nordstrom, and Macy's, and I'll be waiting to check out the bags in person!

The problem is most girls are on a budget these days, and can’t afford the $400 prom dresses. So after talking with several different people I came up with five ways to save on prom dress.

#1 Hold a dress exchange party
Most high schools have at least 2-3 formal dances every year. Most girls can collect anywhere from 5-10 dresses during their four years at high school. Most girls wear their dresses once or twice and then they sit in the back of their closets. That’s why dress exchanges are so great. Get together with a bunch of friends. Have them bring their formal dresses and even their sister’s old dresses, and trade dresses for prom. You’re always trading clothes with your friends anyway, this way you get a great dress, and so do they!

#2 Look at smaller stores or boutiques
Looking at smaller stores instead of huge department stores not only lowers the chances of someone else having the same dress, but also means they carry smaller brands. Smaller brands and designers usually means smaller prices tags. That way you can get all the WOW! of a amazing dress without all the stress of a huge price tag.

#3 Shop around
It may sound like a lot of work but it’s not uncommon to be able to find the same dress at more than store. A lot of times larger brands will be carried at more than one store. If you shop around you can usually find the same dress at a cheaper price than the first store you went to. Also if you are looking for a deal you can usually find a dress on sale, or online.

#4 Donated Dresses
If you are really short on cash and can’t afford a dress, there are several foundations and stores that recycle prom dresses. There are different organizations that have stores across the country where you can pick out a dress from hundreds of options, for free. You can also donate old formal dresses you don’t wear anymore, and help another girl find the perfect dress. For more information and locations go to: http://www.donatemydress.org

#5 If all else fails…
Prom only happens once. If you find your dream dress and there’s no other option, you can splurge on your dress. If you splurge on your dress there are other ways you can save. You can save on your shoes, accessories, and make-up. Take a look in your closet to see if you can skip buying shoes, if not look at stores like Payless or Famous Footwear. For accessories, check out places like Target, Claire’s, and Something Silver. And for makeup check out the department stores at your local mall. Many department stores have free in-store makeup consultations. You can make a appointment for little to no cash. Like I said, if you splurge on your dress there are other ways you can save, sometimes there’s not always another option when you find the perfect dress.

Prom 2009. Girls were scurrying everywhere trying to find the perfect dress with the perfect shoes and accessories to match. The formal dress section was packed with teenage girls. The small waiting area outside the dressing rooms, was filled with tired looking dads, brothers, and boyfriends. Inside the dressing rooms were filled with excited and stressed girls, their best friends and their moms, all giving opinions, taking pictures to compare dresses, and running in and out to grab more. Then it hit me: Prom season had officially hit. For the next two months there will seem to be more dresses in the formal dress department than usual, and soon their won't be one left in sight. All the salons will be booked with appointments for hair and nails, shoe department will be all out of stilettos in the common sizes and colors, and the mall will be crazy. Every girl will be looking for that perfect dress. I won't be going to prom for another year or two, but I can still can think about what my dream dress will look like...

I've always loved BCBG, so of course one of my dream dresses had to be made by them. I also saw a girl try this dress on in store and it was absolutely gorgeous.

I thought this dress was amazing if your were going to wear a print.

Yes I know it's Oscar de la Renta, but hey a girl can dream. This is how you do black right for prom.

I would wear anything by Reem Acra, no questions asked, she is a genius when it comes to dresses.

Again, these are dream dresses. Who knows what the styles will be in two years. I hope to do another post on prom a little later with ideas on how to save on a amazing prom dress.

-Runway2Hallway

Lately the way to take fashion to the next level, has been through outrageous shoes. Some are 7 inches high, and some have no heels at all. All I know is that if I were the model trying to teeter down the runway in these fabulous heels, I would have been terrified and probably would have landed flat on my face:)

Michael Kors

How high are these anyway? I'm guessing the models weren't allowed time to practice walking either?

Chanel

What makes a pair of heels even more fabulous? Not to mention they look fabulously futuristic.

Yves Saint Laurent

YSL's cadged boots were a hit this spring, gracing the pages of several fashion magazines.

Dior
Dior showed an array of heels this season. Two of the more popular ones shown were the triangle and wooden carved heels. I'm not sure what the carving is supposed to be of, but they're fabulous none the less.

Dolce & Gabbana

What Dorthy should have worn down the yellow brick road.

Out of all the shows I have to say Dolce & Gabbana had some of the coolest shoes by far. Not only were they different and amazing, but they were actually wearable and extremely detailed. Although I may not be able to handle the 4 inch heels (top right) but I would wear any of these shoes any day.

My favorite fashion magazines, filled with pages of goregous clothes, cutting edge accessories and page after page of stunning photos. Every now and then there are fashion spreads that you can't help but fall in love with. Whether it's the clothes, the models, the setting, or the story being acted out. In this month's TeenVogue I loved some of the photos in the Blues Traveler spread. Something about the country setting or the 40s feel of it reminded me of Allie and Noah in The Notebook. I picked a few of my favorites and put them here:

Ugh, snow. Yes in March, snow. Washington weather, what can I say. As I dress in jeans and boots or Uggs each day I can only daydream of warm weather, sundresses, flip flops, shorts, and spaghetti straps. After viewing all the major spring fashion shows and watching as stores gradually bring out their spring merchandise, all I do is sit and hope for spring to come and fast. Because you can't wear sundresses and flip flops when it's barely 50 degrees outside. Because it sucks to have a adorable pair of shorts and a perfect pair of strappy sandals in your closet and no place warm enough to wear them. Because it's official, I have fashion spring fever and there's no cure except sunshine and sundresses and warm weather, the same weather that seemes like it will never come. So rain, rain, go away and please send some sunshine my way.

Sometimes you have to wonder if all the designers got together and planned it, because somehow they all have a little bit of the same trend in their shows. This season was no exception, and one of the trends that kept popping up on the runway was flesh colored tones. Designers from Zac Posen(right), Bluemarine (left), and Chloe, to Chanel and Ralph Lauren, all featured nude colored dresses, skirts, blouses and tops in their shows. Designers are showing neutral nudes in head-to-toe looks as well as mixed with more colorful pieces. We’re seeing nude tones mostly in dresses varying in length. Where I’m seeing it in stores is in tops and blouses, as well as in cocktail dresses. The look is fun and fresh head-to-toe and when worn in several different shades. To look fun and fresh this spring it’s all about subtle, flesh tone, neutrals.

The hottest runways of Spring ’09 shone with bright metallics, sparkles, sequin, and shiny fabrics. Designers such as Ralph Lauren, Alexander McQueen (left),Versace, Chanel, D&G, Marc Jacobs, Bluemarine(right), and Chloé sent sparkly creations down the runway. We saw sequins on everything from the harlem pants and messenger bags at Ralph Lauren, the crystal covered dresses and bodysuits at Alexander McQueen, metallic bangles at Alexander Wang, or the sequin-covered skirts at Versace. Occasionally to much sparkle can look over-the-top or tacky but the designers put a fresh, fun spin on their clothes by adorning them with shine and sparkle. And this spring in stores you can find great metallic pieces to add to your wardrobe in the form of fun bangles, sequined tops, and metallic shoes and bags. Another thing about metallics this spring is that you can invest money on good, quality pieces that you can wear again and again, because this trend keeps coming back for all seasons. Now you can go out and find a metallic stunner to add some sparkle to your everyday look.

I mean black and white, no other colors? Well since then I have changed my mind completely, especially because of the runway shows I saw this spring. Several designers such as Michael Kors (left), BCBG, Ralph Lauren, Prada, Valentino, Chanel (right), Alexander McQueeen, and many more have featured black and white looks on their runways. I’ve come to really like this look. The contrast between the two colors makes the whole outfit have a crisp clean look. This year designers really put a spin on a classic color combo by using it in patterns, prints, tie-dye, bandage dresses, and lace. I especially liked the black and white polka dots from Oscar de la Renta and Michael Kors. All I can say is when shopping for spring this year I’m going to make sure to stop at the White House Black Market store, because for Spring ’09 it’s all about the black and white.

Usually this time of year we see a lot of capris skirts and dresses and I was glad to see something a little different this year. Pants strutted down the catwalk in several shows such as BCBG (left), Diane Von Furstenberg, D&G (right), Oscar de la Renta, Ralph Lauren, and Burberry Prorsum. Pants styles ranged from skinny to peg legged, wide legged to harlem, to basic trousers. Fabrics and colors also varied but anyone could see that pants were going to be a staple for spring this year. They were worn under tunics and in suits. Another thing I loved this season was the jeans. Most of the designers featured worn and distressed, light-wash denim, worn peg-legged, skinny and classic bootcut. And finally there were the shorts. Personally shorts are one of my favorite thing about spring fashion. This year designers put a twist on shorts by paring them with suits. Volumized bermudas and burmudas in general, were also big on the catwalks this spring. Now you know, one of the hottest trends to look out for this spring/summer. Check back for more of the trends for this spring.
