Volition

Manicardi uses the reflections of various authors to take up the subject of volition or will. He sees this as a fundamental anthropological dimension that in the age of "everything and now" and without effort has been forgotten, leaving free space to fatalisms and determinisms. Volition has to do with the rational as well as the spiritual parts of man. Since it implicates the individuation of a goal and the means for reaching it, it cannot be separated from an idea and from ethical considerations. But volition also means consistency: to wish to be ethical or spiritual, one must be ready to pay the price. Will activates man’s sense of responsibility, calling him to the task of governing his own life and not permitting it to be governed by other people or events. It might be defined as the spiritual organ of the future, just as memory is the spiritual organ of the past. In fact, for arriving at important human achievements one must be ready to carry responsibility for the past and assume the responsibility for shaping the future. Willing means promising and the will that promises creates the trust that is the foundation for relationships. Since loving is willing life for the other, love can be considered the ultimate and unifying volition.

The Responsibility of the Therapist in the Discomfort of Civilization

The author reflects on the possible relationships of influence between some contemporary tendencies and some expressions of new forms of discomfort. For a therapist the delicate balance between respect for self determination and his own function of lessening alienation presents interesting shades of complexity. Reflection on the discomfort of civilization appears to be an important epistemic indicator because it forces us to question our idea of what is evolutionary and on our ideals about rendering people subjective. If conformity can sabotage a project of identity and compromise the ideal of moral functioning into an adaptive remodelling, it is important to keep awake an ethical alarm and a clinical commitment regarding everything in today’s culture that opposes thinking and impedes interrogating the sense of existence.

History of Schizophrenia (First Part of two Parts)

A history of schizophrenia and psychotic disorders is briefly presented, beginning with the early conceptions of XIX century (Morel, Kraepelin, Bleuler, Schneider, etc.). Subsequently, a brief history of the therapeutic approaches to schizophrenia is reviewed. In this first part, biological approaches are presented, divided into four main developments: "sleep therapy", shock therapy (hypoglycemic shock due to insulin [Sakel], Metrazol [Pentamethylenetetrazole] shock with convulsions [von Meduna], electroshock [Cerletti]), psychosurgery (Burckhardt, Moniz, Freeman, etc.), and psychoactive medication (Clorpromazine, Reserpine, atypical antipsychotics, etc.). In the second and final part, which will be published in the next issue, the history of psychological treatments will be presented.
