For this year we are holding the total times at 2 hours for each program. This way we can fit them onto DVDs. We have been producing DVDs for the past year but have decided to concentrate our efforts here. Same price though, whether a DVD or Video tape. The ISDS will be handling the programs except for in North America. That’s been left for us.

Dad is always able to come up with some new idea when he starts out on a program. This time he indulged me with his plan of making three separate videos from this event. The first is the proper video of the entire 4 days, called the “Highlights” program. This will cover the 2 days of the World Sheep Dog Trials, qualifying competition, the Semi-Finals, and Finals. Also, there’s going to be clips of what happened behind the scenes in the ISDS office and in the extra demonstrations that were performed.

The second tape is going to be just on the Semi-Finals. It will show all the runs and points of the handlers and their dogs as they ran their courses. And if you were wondering what I was doing as I ran around the field on the Saturday, asking every handler for their input; this is where those interviews will come into play. You’ll be able to hear what the handler thought of their run and about some of the backgrounds on these amazing dogs.

And for the third, we’re going to take the top runs of the Finals and show you their complete runs and all the stats that go with them, whatever fits into 2 hours.

This started out with capturing all the footage onto the computer. (About 34 hours of tape to run through). Then I had the job of going through all that footage and writing down what it was about and what happened. This process is called Time Coding. Now, it’s just to wait for dad to come and look through the notes I’ve made so he can write the script. I love it when our neighbors ask “So, you been doing any work lately?” when dad comes back from these kind of trips. They have absolutely no idea how much you have to do to “simply” put a program together. I’m only just realizing how much work there is to do. I’m actually quite excited for the proper editing. I’ve got a month left before I need to move into Brandon for University, so this next month is going to be hectic!

The fog was so thick that you could barely see past the handlers standing out by the handlers post when you were standing at the Judge’s Box. This created for chaos for poor Simon Mosse who, when asked if he had phoned the guy upstairs, he replied that he had and put in a few words to ask him if he didn’t mind but we were meant to be starting at 8 am. Nothing was too ruined and by about 10 o’clock the trial was able to commence, starting with E Sievers, who was soon called off the field when the fog came back down. He was given a re-run a little later and after two more handlers had their turn.

Because of the incredibly hot afternoon, there were many handlers that either retired or were called off. The dogs were taking the worst toll, some finally becoming too tired to listen to the handler and running to find water.

The other obstacle seemed to be just in the first outrun and lift. Between the handler and the sheep there had been a fence that was opened up to let the sheep through in one place. This fence line seemed to confuse the dogs to a max, even causing Jim Cropper’s dog, Sid, to jump over the fence before continuing the run.

So, in the end, these were the results of the 16 runs:

Always a problem at such an event as the ISDS World Sheep Dog Trials and any sheep dog trial for that matter!

The most important moment my father was looking forward to was setting up his mic on the handlers post using an underground wire he was going to insert using a little gadget he had had made by our neighbor in Canada and had carefully stowed in our luggage. (It was made of a shovel handle that was attached to a little 6-inch plow blade that had a place where the wire could be fed through and put into the ground before we stamped the ground back into place.) It was a very nifty little thing that dad was itching to use as soon as we unpacked it on Tuesday. So, finally we talked to the owner of the 4-wheeler in the booth area and asked him to use his bike to tow the plow thing from the fence to the handler’s post. He came and attached it to the back of the bike and (with quite a few spectators) dad proudly plowed his little wire into the ground. I think the effect of this little gadget actually working was enough to impress the spectators and they moved off after dad had reached his destination. (Jim Cropper exclaimed, “ Are you going to plough the whole bloody field, Martin?)

Once in the ground and everyone had cleared off, dad and I were left to test out the mic. Dad pulled out his camera and headphones as I went and plugged in the mic at the post. I didn’t make it too far back to dad before he ripped off the headphones and said, “ What the heck is that!” I didn’t really understand, so he proceeded to describe what he was hearing in the headphones instead of the usual noise I was making in the mic. Dad had successfully picked up the local Irish radio station that was airing the Football game live from someplace. Well, this didn’t go over too well, as you can imagine. I felt quite bad for dad because he was so excited about it, then to have that come of it. I don’t think I have heard him say, “That’s incredible…just…incredible”, (in a shocked and somewhat bewildered voice) so many times in my life. So, we had to resort to the normal practice of taping the shot gun mic to the post in front of the handlers area and the fence line about 40 yards from the handlers post. Then extended with the useful shovel handle from his gadget so that the mic could be at least 2 feet closer and off the wire on the fence. Poor dad, but we made it through okay.

Dad wanted to make it so that his camera was the main one up in the little hut. (And knowing that dad is the experienced one I was more than happy to let him get all the main shots.) My camera was then positioned completely differently to where he was as to get a view from another perspective, down the field to the right of the course and looking back towards the handlers post and the stands. So, dad was on the top of the hill where the Judge’s Box was, and I was set up down the right side of the course so I could get a side view of the dog and sheep, and a good front shot of the handler. This plan worked out really well since now that I’m editing the footage together, I’m able to take dad’s wider shots of behind the handler and what they’re seeing, and then cut in with my close up footage of the dog or the sheep or the front view of the handler whistling to the dog. All of it is working out really well. My other job was to get an interview with each of the handlers after they had completed their runs. Not an easy job.

In that competition Jim Cropper and Sid came out with the best run of the day scoring 398, closely followed by both Euan MacKinnon with Glen and W McConnell with Jaff. In Fourth spot was Serge van der Zweep with Glen. Jim and Sid were the close runners up at the 2002 World Sheepdog Trials at Bala, only edged out of the winning spot by a hair and the run of Aled Owen and Bob.

There were enough Suffolk sheep for the finals day as so this was the obvious solution.

On the Thursday there was the Ceili Mor and World Trial BBQ on the Estate. This was a lovely meal and some traditional toe-tapping music joined by some dancers to cap it all off. It was an eventful evening when Tommy Wilson started to show us all up on the dance floor, soon afterwards to be then replaced by the local tap dancers that were also very impressive.

On the second night, we were invited to the Gala dinner where we were introduced to Ireland at it’s finest. The dinner was held in the beautiful Bridge House Hotel, where we were then served a 5-course meal, and got to talk with the handlers and other organizers. It was a very nice evening.

The ISDS was also responsible for the gathering of all the data for the runs (at the World Sheep Dog trial), from the 3 different qualifying fields, and the Semi Finals and Finals events, and sorting through it, checking it out and posting it for everyone to see. They were also responsible for putting the information and a short write up of the day’s competitions up on their web site. They were helped in this latter work by Peter Hall and Stacey Scott. Peter and Stacey also took many of the photos for the ISDS. It was a major job gathering and checking through all of this information. Peter and Stacey took lots and lots of photos during these 4 days of trials and so each evening they all had to be sorted through and then a decision had to be made as to which ones should go up and which handlers should be represented in these photos. They also had to be cropped, enhanced, some color changing if necessary and then sent up into space. There were many evenings when they worked through until midnight so that the folk in other parts of the world could get their information as to the happenings at these sheep dog trials.

He was busily trying to get the ISDS tent up and running it, as well as making a very good cup of tea on a propane camping stove. As the bits got put together in the tent, the merchandise began to be put out on the tables. Whistles, books, video tapes, shirts, caps, badges, and other Border Collie gifts were brought out to put everyone in the true Border Collie Association mood, as well as a large presentation from the Offaly District Council. The Offaly District Council was one of the sponsors of this World Sheep Dog Trial.

The main field looking over the old Hutton-Bury family Castle gave the Trial Field the feeling of old Irish History. This castle was open to visitors to have a look around and it was absolutely magnificent. As well as the Castle being very well looked after, you could tell that the fields and woods surrounding it were just as carefully looked after. The estate is used for quite a few different Irish countryside events and shows and so they were well accustomed to setting up tents, making sure everyone had water, etc., all the little things that make a show work so well. So to be the host for such an event as this World Trial, it was of no great concern for the staff of the estate.
