Maya Bay

Maya Bay, Koh Phi Phi has been closed for a month now and will stay closed until October 2018. In this article from the Nation Newspaper, they talk about planting some coral on the reef to help rejuvenation.

It also talks about building a pier in Loh Samah to land tourists so they can walk into #MayaBay. They also want to limit tourist to Maya Bay to 2,000 people per day. Anything that helps the nature survive the influx of tourist will be a good thing as long as it is done in a way sympathetic to the surroundings. ie no cement!

Tragic Boat Accident

In the New York Times article there is news of the awful events leading up to the tragic capsize of the boat carrying Chinese nationals out to Coral Island. The authorities advised the captain of the vessel not to set out but the advise seems to have been ignored. 33 people are dead. The article goes into great detail so I won't duplicate it.

Krabi Waterfall, Huai To Waterfall.

One of Thailand's most beautiful waterfalls can be found at the National Park Khao Phanom Benja (Bencha) in Krabi Province. What's fun about all Thai waterfalls is that they are all in mountainous National Parks so you get to experience both verdant tropical jungle with butterflies as big as your hand, and the rush of fresh mountain water, perfect for that dip to cool you down. I like to visit Thailand's waterfalls in the dry season to cool me down and in the wet season to see the raw power of nature.

Those guys might not be able to stand there in wet season as the volume of water is so great!!

The afternoon at Huai To Waterfall

We were staying in the Seabass hotel in Krabi town so we got in our car and drove towards Krabi Airport, out of town. The Huai To Waterfall is fed by the huge 2,700m high Khao Phanom Benja (Bencha) mountain range that dominates this part of Krabi and to some extent out towards Phuket. In fact the mountain is so big it generates thermal clouds in March that float over Koh Phi Phi that make those brilliant lightening storms. The drive off the main north- south route 4 takes you over 20 km inland among some beautiful farmed scenery of rolling hills, the occasional limestone karst protrusion. Here we saw an elephant taking the evening bath in the local river.

We pulled into the National Park head quarters and negotiated a rate as we had arrived at 16.30 and normally they wanted 200THB for the tourist per day. The team at the gate were either curious or bored and let us in paying for 4 people when there were 5 of us. If you approach Thai people with curiosity and respect and are prepared to be fluid and flexible, there is often a way through, making sure both sides of the negotiation gets what they want.

The National Park Khao Phanom Benja (Bencha) is home to Sumatran serow, clouded leopard, black bear, mouse deer and tapir but we saw nothing of these mammals and were probably looking in the wrong place. For details on how to see these animals, approach the National Park wardens who are very helpful. I think the answer wont be an easy solution and you would need to hike for the day way up in the jungle with a guide.

Bird watchers will be intrigued to know that the park is home to the Gurney's Pitta, though this is rare and endangered. Other birds of note are the argus pheasant, the white-rumped shama, the helmeted & white-crowned and hornbill. Again we saw naught of these!

National Park Khao Phanom Benja (Bencha) is also home to the following species of monkeys: stump-tailed macaque, lar gibbon, and langur.

As we walked up the very gradual jeep track we were very quickly enclosed by a huge canopy with trees 200 foot (60 meters) high. They were tremendous and inspiring as well as being beautifully cool. As we started our walk the sound of the crickets or insects started. By the time we walked out at dusk they were making a huge noise, almost deafening. In addition to this, you could almost taste the oxygen in the air, it was so clean!

After a small rise we came to the river crossing. We arrived in March after about 3 months of little or no rain so the river was very small though we could see the remains of 2 broken bridges, obviously swept away in the June and September Monsoons.

Huai To Waterfall.

The Huai To Waterfall is a series of 6 cascades and 6 resulting pools. In the wet season June and September you have to look after yourself as the force of the water is dangerous and every year youngsters loose their lives jumping into water that is more powerful than them. In March the pools were a bit sad in volume but definately cool which was a great relief.

The flow of water was minimal but compared to the 35 degrees and 98 percent humidity outside the National Park it was a cool paradise. We climbed up on the right hand side, on a partially looked-after path, that was steep in places but steady going, and got to the 2nd and then 3rd pool. Here we lay down, sat in the cool water and took in the scenes. It really was quite magical, as, getting late to the National park, we were the only people at the Falls. The heat of the sun was fading a bit and we could drink in nature at it's most delightful and innocent.

I have been to the 6th pool before but we hadnt got time enough to explore this time. Needless to say, it gets more remote, more jungle dominated and more adventurous. The paths can get over grown and slippery when wet so I would always advise people to wear trainers and definitely not flip flops. I would advise taking water and a sarong/towel or leg covering in case the mosquitoes / ants attack. It's beautiful nature but it might turn into a jungle!

Thai people visit Waterfalls on the weekends and holidays.

Visiting a waterfall for many Thai people is a pick-nick where you bring food and enjoy a meal in the beautiful surroundings. Most Thai people dont seem to need to explore so once you get up above the first couple of pools you have the place to yourself.

Some waterfalls in Thailand (like Lumpi Waterfall Khao Lak) have great soup huts and nic knack food stalls to augment what you bring. Often if you arrive on weekends or Bank Holidays and the first pool is busy, just climb up to the 2nd or 3rd pool and you are bound to be away from all the weekenders.

BTW: if this kind of trip only satisfies you for half a day (although I would stay the day!), I suggest you look into going to the Tiger Cave temple which is in the same area. They have a great view point which climbs over 1,200 steps and an amazing hidden valley where the monks live.

All five of us were staying at the SeaBass hotel in Krabi town which is just out side the center and 150 meters back from the Krabi River. We booked the longtail transfer from Krabi to Railay Beach with Krabi Tourist services and were picked up by a minivan at reception.

We drove down to the old pier and jumped out and boarded the large Longtail from a clean concrete line of steps. This is handy as the longtails on some islands are a pig to get into if there are no steps.

The Longtail boat driver rotated the propeller to face almost forward so we could reverse out. This isn't a very gainly move but the drive knew his work and we pulled away from the peer and were off out into the middle of the river heading for the estuary.

Krabi is an old trading post on an old trading route that used to bring spices from the east coast of Thailand to the traders in the Indian Ocean. The old pier isn't much to look at but the deep water allowed the bigger ships in, even in low season, when the winds and seas are strong and high respectively.

The Krabi River winds it self down to the sea through an extensive and thick mangrove forest, a great place for bird watchers and nature lovers.

Still to this day, the southern side of the river is dominated by mangrove forests and this made for a magical ride out towards the sea. Only after 1-2 km you could start to see the myriad of limestone cliffs of PhrangNa.

As we turned out of the estuary, Railey beach could be seen as a thin slice of bright golden sand. As we headed towards #Railey the cliffs became taller and more impressive. Even though it was the dry season, some early rains had turned the mountainside a bright strong green, beautiful.

We arrived at the main Railay East pier which was a very long floating pier. It was easy to get out of the longtail and walk straight onto the beach and then into the village. We hung out at Railay West for a bit but it was quite noisy there from all the boats coming in from Ao Nang. In the afternoon we went to Phranang beach (the place all the pictures are taken from) which was stunning and later in the day I climbed up to the Railay view point which was absolutely stunning.

Speedboat, Koh Phi Phi to Phuket.

The Tigerline speedboat drew into the #kohphiphi main pier and off loaded half a dozen tourist and their bags. We didn't get a chance to ask them how far they had come as it was our chance to board. The boat was pretty full as the speedboat left and it was quite noisy with the 3 x 250 hp's on the back, so we all settled into our traveller's 'zone out' mode. I glanced back as we left Tonsa Bay and saw the great plume of spray from the engines frame the mountains around Nui Bay cliffs.

Transfer Sticker system on Phi Phi and Phuket. How it works.

These transfer stickers get given to you when you hand in your ticket to agent at the Phi Phi pier. This sticker told the people at the Rasada Pier, Phuket, whether I had a private taxi or joined a group bus to Phuket Airport or to one of the many Phuket Beaches. So this was the onward transfer info. It made for quite a slick process when there were 20 different languages amongst us. This is the same system they use for the tours as well.

The Phi Phi Pier 4 pm depart time was nearer 4.40 pm which was a bit confusing but when I understood the itinerary it was no wonder that the Tigerline speedboat gets delayed. The massive 3 x 250 horse power engines drives 45 people up from Li Pe island from 100 km further south from Koh PhiPhi. The #speedboat stopped in Trang, Koh Lanta, & suffers from weather, tide and issues of delays from the general public.

I slept for the crossing from Phi Phi Don and in just under the hour we slowed to approach Rasada Pier the main ferry port in Phuket.

We strolled down Tonsai beach on an idyllic day to Arida, the beach front center for the Arisa speedboat tours of #Kohphiphi. Under the white cliffs of the Tonsai Towers (a famous climbing wall) we saw out 12 seater speedboat, stern to the golden sands and being lapped by the most inconsequential wavelets.

The #speedboat lightly bobbed on the crystal electric blue waters as we waited for all of us to board. Our captain Bang Sead, got his apprentices to pull in and stow the anchors and we set off south towards #phiphiley.

We sped out of the bay aiming for Viking Cave and then Pi ley Lagoon. We moored up on the sand beach in a corner of the lagoon and tried to scramble up to the rarely visited view point. Unfortunately it was very overgrown with vines crawling with red ants that delighted in biting us so we turned back just 20 meters from our goal. The smart guys who stayed wallowing in tropical waters had the best result, just lying back enjoying glorious paradise.

From Pi Ley Bay we headed south past Loh Samah to snorkel on the diving walls of the Koh Bida islands. Celine saw a leopard shark and a black reef shark immediately. After all 8 of us were in the water the bigger fish had been scared off. Still we saw shoals of big trevally waving around the submerged rock falls from the cliffs. This was are best snorkeling for shoals of small fish .

From #KohBida we headed back north to Palong Bay which is just north of the World renown #MayaBay. A local dive profession told us that the black tip shark had been spotted there and sure enough 6 of out 8 had see shark by the end of the visit.

The penultimate snorkel stop was a a massive submerged rock just off the bottom of #phiphidon. The water was clearer here and there was a brilliant shoal of mini blue tuna which was a wonderful sight.

The last stop took us to Wang Long, a perfect cut in the cliffs that has access out onto the setting sun. As they sun set we snorkelled under the cliffs and caves eaten away by the low season storms. This was a real magical setting and sealed the end to a perfect day.

The Phi Phi Ferries are numerous as both Phuket and Krabi have multiple departures (Phuket 08.30, 11.00, 13.30, 15.00/ Krabi 09.00, 10.30,13.30, 15.00/ Koh Lanta 08.00,1300) and multiple ferries in the morning. The morning ferries double as one day sightseeing tour and cruises and are often busy with large groups from all over the world. The later ferries tend to be smaller but filled with people who are definitely overnight on Koh Phi Phi.

The Phuket 08.30, Krabi 09.00, Koh Lanta 08.00 are the first to leave ferries are large. The Largest Sea Angel can take 600 people. Most of the people on these ferries are moved around in large groups and offered a cruise, drinks and food in a day of sight seeing, snorkeling and eating. If you are on these ferries, and these are often promoted as the best ferries, it's good to get on the boat early so you can get a good place to sit. You also want to get your travel bag in an area where you can get it easily or you can be waiting 20 minutes after the ferry arrives to retrieve it.

Koh Phi Phi Pier is busy.

A long time has passed since the old wooden pier was the main way you would get off the ferries at high tide. The smart new Phi Phi Pier caters to over 10 large ferries from Phuket, Krabi, Ao Nang and Koh Lanta. It is also the staging place to board all the tours to Maya Bay and the other islands, as well as the dive boats and speedboats and longtail boats. It really is a hive of activity.

Find your accommodation

After you get through the 20 THB ticket process, you are set to find your accommodation. A large number of resorts, hotels and guesthouses meet you before you leave the pier. You can follow your guide who will be standing at the end of the pier with a sign showing the name of the hotels. These guides will often take your luggage in their cart to your accommodation reception. Some of the smaller guesthouses let you carry your bags all the way. (Guesthouses like Coco's have a cart so it is good to check with your budget accommodation.)

Finding accommodation without pre-booking.

For those looking to find accommodation when they arrive, there are many touts offering options. If you want to take a calmer approach you might want to walk in 70 meters and speak to the guys at Siam UK Travel and Tours. I recommend this travel agent.

Thai Road Trip. Bangkok to Phuket & Phuket to Pha Phanang

Thai Road trip

I have taken 3 Road trips in Thailand in 2016 December. Bangkok to Phuket, Phuket to Pha Phanang and Phuket to Pha Panang. All the trips were done with my Thai family and were such an adventure of cultural differences that I thought they had to be documented.

Travelling down to the south of Thailand was done in Kassem's mini van. Kassem does transfers to and from Krabi Airport from the Beaches and the Phi Phi Piers. Kassem is a quiet man who takes his driving seriously and we progressed south in great cheer. The women talked endlessly about the next stop, the previous day's diner and the next breakfast stop.

We had started the day at the Centre Point Grand Hotel at Ploenchit in the center of Bangkok and were driven out to Coke's house. This took about 45 minutes. This was done as Kassem was not sure of the roads in the center of Bangkok and rather than get lost and loose hours, one of the nephews picked us up and took us north away from our destination. So having started the day with a detour we were on the road at about 6am, just before the Monday morning traffic.

After about an hour and a half we stopped at a petrol station to stretch our legs, have a toilet break and hunt down bit to eat. There seems nothing more appealing to Thai people from the south than to go looking for food. The anticipation and the talk about the potential food is an all engrossing subject that provides the prelim for what is eaten.

The family split out and Kassem headed for the MC Donald's for a coffee. Suree, her brother Baan Ali and I found a smart looking cafe serving morning foods. I had Khaow Tom, (rice soup), and Baan Ali had Bai krapow, minced chicken on rice with a fried egg.

We travelled south with the men including myself quiet as the women talked on about the food they had and how much better or worse it was than in the south. The conversation turned to family and the pros and cons of this girlfriend, husband was bandied around for a while before returning to the key subject one hunt for the next food experience. As we passed various areas along the road, the local people would sell what ever was considered their speciality. Grape fruits were in season and their were countless shack stalls with shade for the seller and piles of the fruit. Next it would be Long Kong fruit or grass brushes, or honey or eggs, a whole kaleidoscope of differing produce made, or procured from the land.

This is the mama and papa business ethic of huge numbers of Thai merchants. This way of life prioritises Independence, small scale, flexible and intimate business. The government only Taxes these type of traders in a very small way as it is such a large group of voting people.

This group of people has flourished free of the shackles of government oversite, health and safety and all the other burdens of modern life in the west. The continual site of people selling their wares along the street gives an impression of a vibrant merchant economy. This is under threat from the modern corporates who now are able sell everything efficiently and cheaply and hygienically and in air con. Businesses like 7 Eleven and Family Mart are covering Thailand. I hope these small stall holders last as they make a truly interesting site along the roads of Thailand.

We stopped at Hua Hin to visit a street full of the way it was about 40 years ago. The shops were full of Memorabelia and photos of times gone by, perhaps an innocent time before the Internet and mobile phones. Like all countries I have visited including my very own England the nostalgia for these simpler times runs through all countries.I snapped an image of the recently Late King while he was making the Sailing boat from wood. This actual boat can be seen in the Reception area of the Boat Lagoon Hotel In Phuket.

On south again and we stopped at Chumpoon and Kiri Khan before heading over to the west side of the country to Phuket. This was done in the dark and the roads are not lit so added care was taken by Kassem to get us safely over the Sarasin Bridge to Phuket.

Phuket to Pak Panang

3 days later we set off on our Road Trip to Pak Phanang in Nakhorn SI Thammarat Province. This was different in that I was driving my old Honda CRV which must be 12 years old. The roads covered must take you through some of the most beautiful scenery in southern Thailand. As soon as you get off Phuket island you are confronted with a very green untouched landscape with views of mountains to the north and Limestone Karst scenery around the northern end of Phangna Bay.

This road is always one of the highlights of any drive I do in Southern Thailand. We used to live in Krabi but go to the hospital in Phuket for my son, Thomas and had to make this road trip quiet regularly. I would stop as often as I could to learn something new about the road and attractions near by. It certainly is worth doing with a good map and having an explore. Reminder: Road between Phuket and Krabi.

Just before we reached Krabi Town we turned off at Ao Luk (really fresh market) and headed east across the country. This area is like time forgot with hectares upon hectares of rubber, palm and virgin jungle in every direction you look. The road is quite windy as the road winds its way between small villages and mountain ranges anymore Karst limestone scenery. If you find a stop on market day, you won't find anything fresher for local produce off the land.

Side streets in to the country around Krabi

As you near Nakhorn SI Thamarat Province you are confronted with one of Southern Thailands biggest mountains. To get through and around this takes a lot longer that it might suggest as the massif is so large. If the scenery was remote when we crossed the Kra Isthmus the and scale became more dramatic with the signs of huge waterfalls appearing high up along the foothills. The east coast experiences a totally different weather pattern in December to the West coast so the land was verdant, the rivers full and many fields flooded.
We skirted the main town of Nakhorn SI Thamarrat and headed over the last 28 km flat lands to Pak Phanang. Many houses on stilts were flooded and had small canoe s tied up to the steps at the entrances. Men could be seen wading through swamps with nets trying to catch the river fish that appear everywhere in these conditions.

Arriving at Pak Phanang after 6.5 hours we settled in to some fine hospitality at Baan Ali's house and ate river prawn and a whole range of delicacies.

Q. Planning to stay in the north of Koh Phi Phi at Laem Tong Beach but need to party all night at the center of the island where all the bars are located near the main pier. Do long tail boats go all night long?

A. Availability will be better in high season Nov-March but normally the answer is yes. Sounds like an excellent plan? The Holiday Inn has a fine reputation and so does the party scene in the main village.

Longtailboat trips to Laem Tong beach at night.

To get from Loh Dalum beach to Leam Tong beach after dark is not set in stone as the longtail drivers will charge depending on the time of day. There is a day time price (pretty fixed), upto midnight (varies a little) and then a negotiated price after that. Longtails Boats usually take up to 6 peopole for night taxis.

If you are on Loh Dalum beach, the place where all the late night bars dancing on the beach are (Slinkies, Woodies etc), this is the place to get a longtail. This is the shortest way to Laem Tong but about 40% less distance. IF the tide is out or there are no longtails, you will need to walk 10 minutes over the to the main pier and get a boat from there. This route will take you round Long Beach, Past Phi Phi Island Village at Loh Bagao beach and then on to Laem Tong.

The short way takes about 18 minutes direct from the Loh Dalum beach to Laem Tong Beach, the longer way, including the walk to the pier (Koh Phi Phi Pier ) will take 40-50 minutes.

Speedboats dont tend to go at night and even when they do they go pretty slow.

Walking to Laem Tong Beach from the main village.

If you decide you want to walk to Laem Tong it is about an hour and half, but not for the faint hearted as the trail start point keeps on getting overgrown, especially in low season. From Slinkies bar you look out to sea and then head right (east) along the shoreline and other small resorts. The beach curves round to the north and you follow the beach trail till you come to a sign for Loh Bagao, Phi Phi Island village up a simple mud track. The up and over the ridge is about 18 minutes till you reach civilization again. I wouldn't suggest this without a day time recce and a torch. From here you go over to the bridge on the creak and then you are only 2km from Laem Tong Beach and the Holiday Inn.

I would definitely recommend to book in advance for any accommodation in January on #KohPhiPhi.

All resorts, hotels, guesthouses, dorms accommodation are thoroughly reviewed by tripsadvisor and booking.com etc and by the mechanics of 'best booked first', get taken. If you turn up and try to get a place to stay by walking around there is bound to be rooms available but you can easily end up with something that is less than perfect, in the wrong location and / or, at a higher price than your budget. If you are lucky you can get a recently completed room that hasn't got round to promoting or hasn't been picked up by social media.

Availability on Koh Phi Phi in January

If you book late for January you can be getting yourself into the same situation so book early. Most accommodation is available a good 9 months or more ahead of check in so it is possible to do your research and find your quality, budget and location in the comfort of home without lugging your luggage around in 30 degrees C looking for the best spot.

To give you an idea of Koh Phi Phi occupancy in Coco's guesthouse was 96% in Jan in 2016, 93% in Jan in 2015 and 93% in Jan 2015. Coco's is just a 1 star guesthouse so you can understand that Koh Phi Phi is very full in this period.

It does get less busy after about 20th January but it is still busy.

Distance between Holiday Inn Phi Phi Island & Phi Phi Island Village Beach Resort

The geography and transport are the key to this question. The Loh Bagao and Laem Tong beaches are unconnected by roads so there are no cars (although there is a flat jeep track between the 2 beaches which is about a 35 minute walk)). Its all about the speedboats or longtail boats times between Holiday Inn Phi Phi Island Laem Tong Beach and Phi Phi Island Village Beach Resort. These resorts are about 3 km apart.

Both these Koh Phi Phi resorts are good as they say in their websites and on reviewing websites like TripAdvisor and booking.com. In fact they are in the top 4 resorts on an island with over 100 different accommodations, resorts down to dormatory.

It takes about 20 minutes from the main village and pier for a longtail boat to PP Island Village and about 25 minutes to PP Holiday Inn at Laem Tong beach. Speedboat difference is about 2-3 minutes so there isn't really a massive difference between the 2 beaches.

The courtesy longtail boats from both resorts leave from both resort at around 08.00 and 13.00 in time for the ferries.

In 2016 a one way Longtail from the main village to Phi Phi Island Village Beach Resort costs 1,000THB (£22, $28, E 25) and the same to Holiday Inn Phi Phi Island is 1,300THB (£28, $37, E 33) . This private longtail will take 3 people + luggage. A private small speedboat for 1-5 people to the resorts is 4,500THB (£100, $129, E115). These prices were taken from the travel agency Siam UK Travel and Tours, 70 from the pier. Note these prices will go up and down depending on the time of the quote but serve as as a good ball park.

Staying on #KohPhiPhi all depends on your style of travelling and your wish list.

The main Phi Phi Phi Phi Village

If you want to be near the #PPdiving boating, snorkeling and tour operations to see the rest of the islands, the main village by the pier has it all. (There are no cars on Koh Phi Phi so you reach 80% of the island by boats or trekking around through the jungle. It also has a great selection of budget accommodation and a great variety of eateries and the market.)

Most people end up here in the main village, as, although the party scene can dominate on the north beach (Loh Dalum), the place has everything, a great day time beach (Loh Dalum), a great variation of restaurants, easy access to the boats to Maya Bay, travel agencies to get things done, banks etc. The main, all tide swimming beach in the village is in front of PP Cabana Hotel. This is where, with deep water, the open water divers train for their PADI, SSSI etc.

If you want to party and at the same time have access to Phi Phi Don Village, this is the place for you. Phi Phi Don Village is also called Tonsai on some websites. Some of the main hotels on Phi Phi Don Village are PP Cabana Hotel 4*, PP Hotel 3* , PP Princess 4*, PP Palmtree 3*.

The Quieter end of the village

If you want quieter than the main village but easy access to it, you should stay 5-10 minutes walk along the beach on the south side of the Phi Phi Don island but to the east of Phi Phi Don Village near Phi Phi Andaman Legacy Resort 3*,- Phi Phi Villa 3*, PP Andaman Resort 3*, Arayaburi Resort 3*. This is the quietest area away from the beach party scene.

If you want to be away from the village but be able to take a 10 minute boat ride in, stay on Phi Phi Long Beach. There is a Coral reef just off the beach here and you get great views of Phi Phi Ley and Tonsai Cliffs. Phi Phi The Beach 4*, Phi Phi Paradise Pearl 2-3 *, Phi Phi The Hill 2*. You can organize diving and boat trips here. The choice of eating is alot more confined than the main village but it is a simple 100THB + 10 minute longtail boat taxi ride away.

Remote Ao Phak Nam

For remote, try Phi Phi Relax 2* + on Ao Phak Nam Beach. Here you can really get away from it with views of the Krabi shoreline in the distance. This resort has an amazing moon rise location.

Stylish Loh Bagao

For smart and luxury accommodation, try the quiet Phi Phi Village resort 4* which is popular with honey moon couples on Loh Bagao. This resort covers a wide area and the bungalows are nicely spaced to give a good deal of privacy.

Laem Tong Beach

Laem Tong Beach has the 5 star Zeavola Villas which are all you would expect of a well run resort. The PP Holiday Inn 4* offers great accommodation for those who want to know what they are getting.

Budget Accommodation

Most of the budget Accommodation is in the main Phi Phi village. I work for PP Coco's so obviously I think you should take a look at this 1 star guesthouse if you are interested in the old and traditional accommodation for travelers. Although Coco's has comfortable budget ensuite aircon rooms and a half a dozen superior rooms, the guesthouse tips it's hat to the basic fan rooms that were so dominant in the 80's and 90's.

Coco's is under the mountains at the start of the Viewpoint walk close enough to the beach to make it a pleasant stroll but far enough away to not hear the beach bars.

I'm an experienced traveler so I'm all up for arriving and haggling for a room once on Koh Phi Phi but I know that December is peak season . Should I book accommodation in advance or will I find a room? I don't want to risk a disaster.

Answer to; should I Book Koh Phi Phi in advance in December?

It can be very busy in December so it is best to book to get the kind of accommodation that suits. The best rated accommodation gets booked up first and on an island of simple accommodation quality this can be significant. You can be left with the lesser room quality/ higher price or be forced onto a beach that doesn't suit. Similarly if you want beach front this can get snapped up as early as the previous season but often by July.

1st -to around the 10th December is normally the standard high season and some years the island can be extremely busy, the next year just "full". The last few years it's been 75-95% full.

From 11th December-19th December there is definitely a lull in the number of tourist that come to the island. Many tourists visit Chiang Mai for treking and then head to the beach for Xmas. You could easily pick up a deal in this period. The last few years it's been 60-80% full.

I would recommend you book in peak season 20th December -20th January. The last few years it's been 90-98% full.

BTW. Haggling on the island isn't as free and easy as the mainland so just take it even slower than you are used to for the best results. Read this article on haggling from 24 years working with Koh Phi Phi people.

Basically, there is NO accommodation on Phi Phi Ley. To be clear, Phi Phi Ley is a National Park with no accommodation whatsoever. The only people who stay on the island are the National Park wardens and the local people who guard and farm the caves where the birds for the Phi Phi birds nest soup are found.

The answer to Travelling to Phi Phi in rainy season

The first part of June is the rainy season and ferries from Phuket are large so the crossing is fine. ferries go through out the year and there should be no problems. Try Sea Angel for the ferry to Phi Phi from Rassada Pier Phuket. Most of these ferries have a pick up service from the Phuket hotel if you ask.

The delight of low season is that it is a lot quieter and only if you are unlucky the weather will be bad all the time. In my experience over 24 years, there will be perfect weather windows followed by showers followed by great weather. After you get there the local divers will know the rhythm of the weather so you can get out to the beaches.

One last key point is that all the cliffs are in between you and the prevailing westerly wind so it is always pretty calm in Tonsai Village. Also rain in Thailand is cold. The temperature can drop 5-8 C in seconds so it is worth thinking about taking a towel or extra shirt to change into

Where should I stay on Koh Phi Phi and how long is needed?

I'm travelling to Thailand in December for three weeks with my partner.

I'm looking for advice on how long to stay in Phi Phi for and what the best area to stay in would be as Google is giving me some very conflicting information.

Time wise, we can spend anywhere from 1-5 nights here but I'd rather not stay longer than needed as I'd rather dedicate more time to Phuket.

We would like to be near the bars and nightlife if possible.

Any recommendations would be great on time/areas!

Answer to; Where should I stay on Koh Phi Phi

If you want the nightlife I would recommend 2 locations. Tonsai village has most of the islands accommodations and the best nightlife (nightlife around Reggae Bar / Dojo in the main village early evening and the moves over to Loh Dalum Beach 200m away, still in the main village)

The other location is Long beach which is 10 minutes longtail boat away or a 40 minute walk along the shore. Longtails run all night but at a premium after 12pm.

I work for PP Cocos in the main vilalge just under the mountains , 4 minutes from the nightlife beach so obviously big that guesthouse up.. LOL.

Answer to: how long is needed on Koh Phi Phi?

How long is a piece of string? If you like water sports and nightlife you can get into a fun mix of party and then do an afternoon sunset adventure. Many people find the fact that they can walk every where is charming and addictive. The number of times I have heard, ' I just came for a few days and I am still coming hear after all these years'. I did the same 24 years ago!

I think you have got to stay 4 days to do the island justice. I would do a dive, snorkel with the sharks, a booze cruise, and kayak. I would want to visit Maya Bay, Bamboo Island and Viewpoint. The list goes on.

Ferry to Phuket - Koh Phi Phi- Is this enough time to catch my flight?

I'm trying to coordinate my return from Koh Phi Phi to Bangkok, via Phuket.

If my ferry arrives at Rassada Pier at 4:00 pm, will I have time to catch my 7:05 pm flight out of Phuket Airport? Bangkok Airways says we need to arrive at the airport 1.5 hours before the flight, making the timing a bit tight.

Will our timing be ok? Or should we choose the ferry that arrives to Rassada Pier at 11:00 am?

Answer to: Is this enough time to catch my flight?

A taxi/minibus transfer from the Rassada pier at 4pm for a 7pm flight from Phuket Airport is easily arranged and should be no problems in timing. The taxi/minibus drivers usually skirt Phuket town traffic round the back of Khao Yang and get up to the airport in just over an hour at that time in the day.

If you go from Phi Phi to Krabi, the ferry takes the same time but the trip from the pier to Krabi Airport is 40 minutes. There are less daily flights from Krabi Airport to Bangkok (5 a day) than from Phuket airport (5 a day) to Bangkok.

When to go to Maya Bay.

Because of its geology and geography you can get to Maya Bay on most days of the year... Even in the monsoon months, if the waves are coming in too large at the entrance, there is a walk through from Loh Samah, an inlet on the other side of the cliffs. This, in itself is a classic walk through virgin jungle for 180 metres and well worth doing, even if you arrive at the main beach.

The Beach.

Maya Bay was put in the world's attention when Leonardo Di Caprio shot his Movie "The Beach" here in 2000. The movie, about a wayward backpacker, in search of the ultimate travel experience. It wasn't a huge success but the garden of Eden imagery immediately shot Koh Phi Phi into the headlines. Some Leonardo groupies turn up to see where the movie was shot, but most people are just drawn by its sheer beauty.

How to get to Maya Bay?

Phi Phi Ley is a remote island about 2km from Phi Phi Don. No formal accommodation can be found on the island. The only people who stay there are Marine Park wardens and seasonal farmers who scale the cliffs in search of the Bird's Nest for the Chinese Bird's Soup.

The 2 main ways to get to Maya Bay are from Phuket on a day tour or from Koh Phi Phi by staying overnight. The tours from Phuket offer PhuketPhiPhi big ferry- cruiser snorkel tours and Maya Bay speedboat tours.

Tours from Phi Phi Don can be very varied. Longtail boat trips can be organised by travel businesses on the island or private hire down by the pier. The classic Maya Bay -Phi Phi full day tour is highly memorable.

Nearest Accommodation.

The nearest accommodation is on Phi Phi Don at budget guesthouses like Coco's in the main village all the way up to the 5 star Zeavola Resort on Laem Tong Beach.

This little beach is just as you arrive at Maya Bay from the ocean entrance and is on the right hand side. As with all Maya Bay, access is best at high tide. The sand at the high tide point is insanely pretty and light, the views and atmosphere truly wonderful.

The shallow snorkel reef is about 180 meters from the main Maya Bay beach. Mostly boats anchor off the small National Park buoys which are an easy 40 meter swim to the reef edge. You don't need to go up to the reef as the the whole bay is a coral field where you can view a wonderful array of species of Andaman Sea reef life.

Some of the best snorkeling can be done along the great walls on the northern edge of the entrance but these coral walls plunge deeply down to 20 meters depth and can be inaccessible especially in low season, May to October end.

The main types of boats used for snorkeling on this reef are the longtail, speedboat and big boat. The traditional longtail boat is a small wooden craft with a long prop-shaft and is a great way to tour the reefs on Phi Phi Ley. Small groups of snorkelers can get into places that the bigger boats cannot. They can be difficult to get into and out of but are a lot of fun.

Speedboat tours of Phi Phi nearly always stop at Maya Bay reef for a time to snorkel. Often these boats do time on "The Beach" and out on the reef so you get a decent amount of time in the bay. Tours as referred to above with full day trips like the Maya Bay speedboat tours from Phuket or the more local Maya Bay -Phi Phi full day tour.

The big boat tours are another unique way of enjoying the magnificent Maya Bay. These are old fishing boats converted into day trip boats. Around 30 people hang out together and visit the bay as a group. This can be great fun but large groups can scare away the larger marine life.

Diving in Maya Bay

Maya Bay Diving is iconic and one of my favourite dive locations on Koh Phi Phi. From the dramatic scenery above the waterline you plunge below to a world of huge cliff walls, boulders the size of trucks and small houses. Huge fan corals can grow between the more protected rocks but a yearly monsoonal surge ensures that any that grow in exposed areas get swept away.

As you pass through ravines and hidden corners it is common to surprise larger marine life such as turtles and grouper. As you head further west out to the entrance of Maya Bay the water is deeper at around 15-20 meters.

The wall diving is extensive on both sides of the entrance to Maya Bay with every indentation and promontory a place for shoals of juvenile to hide.

Good tip: Stay on Phi Phi if you wish to dive the islands.
There are many dive companies on Koh Phi Phi Don at Tonsai Village and at Long beach and Laem Tong beaches. They have every facility, PADI and SSSI, Open Water to Instructor courses and many type of dive boat from longtail, through to converted fishing boat to bespoke dive boat.

The advantage of staying on Koh Phi Phi is that diving starts just 15 minutes from the island where as the Phuket or Krabi dive tours need 45 min bus transfers and 2 hour dive boat transfers to the same site.

Thai National Anthem and Nationality

Thai National Anthem and Nationality.

Thailand has one of the most homogeneous of races in the world with 95% being Thai Buddhist, about 4% are Muslim and the remaining 1% a mix of other races. This 95% accounts for a strong uniform set of values that keep the society closely aware of their culture and united.

The King of Thailand.
The key symbol of Nationality and unity is the King who is greatly revered.

National Anthem.
The Thai natural sense of Nationality often starts with schooling and children are quickly taught to learn Thai and appreciate the uniqueness of Thai culture and sing the National anthem every morning before lessons start at 8 am. This is a parade ground style of Assembly with children standing in line as the Thai Flag is raised.

The National Anthem translation is as follows;

Thailand unites flesh and blood of Thais
Land of Thailand belongs to the Thais.
It has long maintained its sovereignty,
Because the Thais seek, and love, unity.
Thais are peace-loving, but fight with courage
They shall allow no one to rob them of freedom.
Sacrificing every drop of blood for the nation,
For the nation's safety, freedom and progress.

This is a fiercely patriotic anthem and one that every child takes to heart. There's no doubt in my mind that it is one of the key elements for building such a cohesive society.

At 6 pm every day the National Anthem is broadcast ed on all the main TV and radios stations.

The Thai National Anthem is also broadcast-ed at the Cinema before a movie. Everyone, including westerners, are expected to stand respectfully.

Important to Show respect.
If you are a westerner and even a carefree backpacker travelling Thailand around, I advise you to show respect for the Thai National Anthem and Nationality. Thai people will get quite upset if you knowingly or unknowingly disrespect their sense of Thailand.

BTW. This also applies to the currency which has the Kings head on it, so please be careful how you treat the money.

Thai Family
From the European perspective, the Thai family has a very traditional, and some would say, old fashion structure. Old fashion sounds negative but I believe that many of the normal Thai family traits appear similar to some of the great values of European living. By this I mean there is a strong sense of family and how it is perceived to fit in with the social hierarchy of the country as a whole. Thai parents and children have a profound understanding of who is senior and who should be respected as this is drilled into children at an early age. There is also a great respect for government work like army, police & bureaucrats and this sense of structure keeps the family unit grounded. It also helps keep Thailand uniform and cohesive.

From very early on, children are taught by rote, with a lot of repetition, to conform to norms as set out by their teachers and parents. The Thai alphabet is a 48 character system, each letter represented by common animals like chicken and snake and some more esoteric characters like monks cymbal bells. Children endlessly repeat the sound of the alphabet with associated representation until they know them backwards and can say them with the correct intonation. The intonation is something core to talking, understanding, reading and writing Thai. This chanting style at an early age pulls children in a uniform direction embracing the value of the culture.

Once these basic elements have been assembled, the Thai culture and Thai face is taught by Buddhist parables & fables that reflect Thai's basic relativism. Along side these cultural elements the sciences and social sciences sit. However I would comment that the majority of Thai people see the Thai cultural aspect as core.

The elderly
The elderly are always addressed in an honourific term 'Pi' their name emphasizing their place in the family and in society. The style of language that is used to talk to an elder changes to show this respect. However they in turn are able to reply to the younger 'Nong' their name and use less formal language. This sense of elder younger is taught from a young age and is part of the fabric of life. The classic way to describe this comes from the following story. Imagine twins at birth. Aunts will gather round and talk to the older baby as 'Pi' their name and 'Nong' their name to keep this hierarchy in place. This younger older conversation will stay with those children throughout their life and spreads out to include family and friends.

I'm not convinced that Thai people are ancestor worshipers unlike their Chinese-Thai compatriots who go to great lengths to pay their respects to the dead. Having said that, there is a fundamental awareness of relations in the after life in the tradition of believing in ghosts. Many of the most popular TV soaps include ghosts and their imaginary horrors.

No Nanny state.
Thailand is not a nanny state and the primary care process is based on the family. This emphasizes the need for good family relations and large and extended family ties. Often getting work comes through who you know in the extended network of family and their friends. Many homes have elderly relations living our their days, some with far from satisfactory help but there is no European sense of state provision. For these reasons the family is at the core of Thailand living.

Familiarity.
Thais are not very tactile compared to Western cultures and care should be taken not be too informal before you get to know people. Thailand is very hot so it makes sense there isn't a lot of hugging or cheek kissing or even shaking hands. This I believe, is one reason why the Thai feel comfortable doing the 'Wai' (meaning 'bow') with their hands together as if in prayer, fingers pointing upwards.

Boy things have changed!

It's as if the internet has re-written social values all over the world and none more so than in Thailand. The 'smart phone generation' has come to large sways of the country, changing how people communicate and express their thought. There is a lot more slang, a lot more break-down-the-walls-of-hierarchy-and-independent-thought and having a voice, much to the chagrin of the older generation. This has created a social energy that puts the under 40's in a different mind set to those who have not embraced the internet. However the language, schooling and values are the same, the powerful political classes and institutions change very slowly. So from the outside it is feels as if it's a modern version of the same culture. However, speaking to some of the older generation it's as if the world is getting turned upside down.

In a heavily networked family, the internet generation might find it more difficult to respect their elders and this is a fault line that will change Thailand over time.

Shopping Malls in Thailand have an incredible pull on Thai society. Large sections of Thai society aspire to spend loads of time in smart, clean, air conditioned mega buildings. The modern shopping Mall is packed with the latest fun things to buy, eat, and look at and enjoy. It can often have cinema complexes, bowling alleys, Thai Massage and even attractions like Aquariums, which along with gardens, sculptures and displays, make it the go to entertainment center. Normally there is no bargaining for a deal in the main shops but quiet calm persistence can get some movement of the price if your smile is genuine enough.

It has also acquired the prestige of a cool (as in hip) place to meet up with friends and hang out. It really is an amazing phenomenon. Most places will have wi fi and internet connection down the mobile is great so you can hang out and be connected.

Not only that, Malls are often have large parking lots and so, for those who have a car, the symbol that shows the world that you have made it in the world, you can arrive in style. Having said that many people arrive on motor bikes, subway, bus, songtail tuk tuk, or simply walk, anything to be apart of the Mall lifestyle.

I think one of the most obvious draws for Thai people is comfort. The Mall removes you from the glaring sun, the heat and the humidity of the Thai seasons. It also provides a level a comparable comfort outside the home, if wealthy, but even a higher level of comfort, if less affluent. You could argue that any smart restaurant with air conditioning has the comfort, but because The Mall is similar to an enclosed village and allows you to walk around like you are in a smart shopping street, able to browse, compare, experience, shop, eat and just past the time of day. In addition it allows you to show how sophisticated you are and how you stand in the world.

The shopping Malls also plays heavily on Thai's love of food. It is rare to visit a country that is so engaged with food. From the simple local food to elegant Thai Royal cuisine, sophisticated tastes to rare and mainstream food franchises, the Shopping Mall is a place to come and meet friends and eat. The convenience of it cannot be stressed. The huge number of people on the roads, the stress of any day to day living can be wiped clean with a walk around the Mall, a chat with friends and a bite to eat.

One of my favourite eating experiences are the Shopping Mall food courts. Surrounding many many tables you have small food outlets with local food. Here you can enjoy all the local street food without the heat of the street, all the local desserts and specialties and often at great value. Normally you buy a swipe card from the kiosk for 100-200 THB, buy any dishes you like, and then return the card, getting any unused credit back in change.

(While I'm thinking of it) It's not strictly a Mall but does have multiple food outlet like a Mall. One little gem that is worth knowing is the food court at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK). It's down stairs near to the Suvarnabhumi skytrain station entrance. This a great place to taste that authentic taste before a flight but also before passport control on departure.

Those who cannot afford the time and money to go to the Mall aspire to this lifestyle. Thai society is quite hierarchical so there is big face if you can go and be at ease with your surroundings. A way to show you are at ease is to walk around with many bags of shopping, ideally with the most expensive brands on show. Huge section of the Thai society love to shop and feel great comfort in buying into well known brands. Marketing people have worked this all out so now their are an entire range of Shopping Mall's that focus in on branding by income and demographic.

General Malls like Big C or MBK off Siam Square aim at those with a lower income and tweak their business model for exactly the profile of people who can afford the entry level products. The Central Shopping Mall aims at the aspiring middle class and this franchise can be found all over Thailand. High end Malls like The Emporium off Sukhumvit in Bangkok cater to the super wealthy and you can feel that affluence by the watches worn, bags, designer labels of all the customers. So by going to the Mall it has become a status symbol which measures where you are in society.

In 2014 the Worlds most used Instagram hashtag for a while was #paragon () a seven storey mega Mall in Bangkok with all the top clothing (Chanel) brands, high end jewelers (Cartier) and a whole section devoted to selling Porshe, Ferrari, & Lambourgini. This was an aspiration movement hashtag and with over 7 million hits showed that being part of the Mall lifestyle has a profound meaning inside Thailand.

The Meaning of the Materialism
From a western perspective the Thai Shopping Mall might come over as highly materialistic which, at one level, it is. But there again I think there is more to it. There is massive social cohesion in Thai society and being part of the group represents good. From an early age, children are taught at school to believe that the Thai way is the best way and doing what other Thais do is a good thing. Buying into known brands at popular shopping Malls, eating with other like minder people reaches a deep comfort level that reinforces the belief system.

Another aspect of the success of the Shopping Mall is it's modernity. Modern, not old and backward, is the hallmark of progress. Thai people sees themselves as modern and from a modernizing society, a developing country looking forward optimistically to a brighter future. So in this sense the Mall gives Thai people a sense they are part of the future.

It is important to understand that this isn't a western sense of optimism, it is purely a Thai one based on strong foundations of shared Thai Values, a strong school system to teach them and a profound love of being Thai. So although the Mall looks like something you might see in London, Paris or New York it most definately has a strong Thai twist and theme and very unique social interaction.

What this love of the shopping mall culture tells me about Thai people is that they are very confident about the future and confident on who they are. They are happy to spend and spend as nothing in the future will stop the progress of their country.

Phi Phi has a very long established history for good value traditional backpacker and traveler accommodation. Ever since Cabana's straw huts on Tonsai Beach in the late 70's Phi Phi has been the part of that delightful coming of age travel circuit that covers South East Asia. Now Phi Phi is much more a party Island than it ever used to be, but still the majestic beauty of its cliffs, island's hidden sandy bays, draws all who want a glimpse of paradise.

Coco's is one of those classic and traditional Thai Guesthouses that appeared in the 1980's and 1990's that specifically serve the traveling mindset. A mindset that wants to explore, explore, explore and then fall asleep in a quiet corner among other like minded souls. Following the trends of credit card backpacker and the more affluent traveller, Coco's does have standard and superior air conditioned accommodation to cater for those who want a bit more than the basic. However, the atmosphere of a guesthouse set in the village is paramount and fondly kept by the owners.

The Coco's name game from the coconut trees that covered the island in large plantations. Many of these trees have been cut down in the center of the village but there are still many around the guesthouse, so you must be careful and make sure you don't get hit by them when they fall (which is often very signaled when it gets windy.)

Monkeys can often be seen at Coco's and will always come down the mountain to steal the mangoes off Cocos trees. The guesthouse is right next to the Viewpoint Hill and many of these playful creatures come to harvest the fruit in season. However it is worth mentioning that they have become a little too tame from being fed by the guides and tourists, but then fierce when crossed. I advise people to keep your distance.

Coco's is 5-7 minutes walk from the world class Loh Dalum Beach which is stunning during the day (but with a tidal beach) and with quite the party scene by night. Coco's is just far enough away to not be effected by the late night revelry.

Just to say I'm back on the blog hot seat and am going to post on my take on the travel scene where ever that takes me.

Having been in the travel scene for over 30 years I think I am in a good position to comment on how it has changed, mostly for the better but in some situations lament the loss of the big world feeling since the advent of the internet and mass information. The irony is not lost on me when I say this as the information has partly been propagated in blogs such as these. However as I say to anyone who will listen, there is information and informed information and I hope you might agree this is the latter.

I'll also start to write on new series of what's new with regard to Phi Phi news, which is a place I have known for over 20 years.

Since I last wrote I have gained a greater understanding on the Guesthouses of Phi Phi Island with all the new rooms now on offer. By helping with the promotion of Coco's guesthouse I have now have a first hand understanding of what makes it tick from the local side. I'll explain how the advent of the internet has totally changed the way people find accommodation and places to stay.

I'll also report on the latest travel information, on getting to Phi Phi Island and all the new transfer and ferry links that make the island very accessible on a short or longer visit.

And anything else...

Well as I sit here and type a few thoughts cross my mind. One which I really think is at the heart of off all travel blogs and that is; How to get that killer holiday at a great price. But more of that later. I will now sign off for the moment as I have to continue with the day job.
