cheap and effective way to repair rust on roof of van?

I have rust on the roof of my van near the windshield. When someone tapped on it, it broke through, so now there is a hole.. I was told the windshield would have to be taken out to fix it properly. one estimate was nearly 1000.00 and another was $250 plus windshield installation. I really don’t have the $250+ to fix the darn thing. However, someone told me I could put silicone in the hole and smooth it over. Would there be a good chance this would work? What else do I need to do…. as far as rust inhibitor or rust stoppage? Please answer quickly as I have to get it repaired one way or another… within this next week.

Silicon will look like crap but if you do it right it WILL seal it up. There are some products to stop the rust. A rust CONVERTER is your best bet. Paint some on and try to get it inside the best you can too. After it dries silcon it. If the hole is not all the way down to the windshield opening you could remove the rust and work with some body filler for a better looking job.

Are you using the anhydrous oxalic acid or the dihydrate?
1.Ahydrous. (COOH)2 Molar Mass – 90.03
But oxalic acid is a diprotic acid, so you would need 45.015g in 1litre solution to make a 1N solution. You want a 0.2N solution, so divde by 5, and you want 250mL, so divide again by 4.Answer 2.2508g

2 Dihydrate (COOH)2.2H2O Molar mass = 126.02g
126.02 ÷2÷5÷4 = 3.1505g

Electronic rust inhibitors.?

I’m going to be purchasing a new Honda by the middle of this summer. I want to keep it rust free for as long as possible. What’s better, the heavy oil spray coat or the electronic rust inhibitor. Any and all feed back welcome.

I think it’s all a crock. When I bought my Honda in December, they offered me the electronic rust inhibitor as well. They wanted some obscene amount, around $1000 for it. It only was good for 4 years past the regular warranty of 3 years. I live in the roadsalt capital of the world (upstate NY) and I’ve never had a car that would start rusting before 7 years anyway. So save your money. They’re just gimmicks. The only way I’d buy it is if they offer at least a 10 year warranty.

Hey guys,

I’m having trouble with a chemistry question. It asks if oxalic acid can be used as a primary standard to standardise a solution of a base, such as sodium hydroxide. Explain why.

Yes of course, oxalic acid is considered as a primary standard because of it’s stability.

Powder Polyester Powder Coating – Rust Resistant?

I just bought a steel arbor that is coated in "powder polyester".
Is Powder Polyester rust resistant or should treat the metal with a rust inhibitor? Will a rust inhibitor damage the powder polyester?

Any thoughts?

Powder coating is rust proof… the issue will be if there are cracks in the coating. If there are then rusting is a factor.

Which is stronger for stain removal, citric acid or oxalic acid?

well, you see i’m doing this project. i’m comparing the efficacy of Averrhoa bilimbi and citrus microcarpa as stain remover, i just want to know whether citric acid is stronger than oxalic acid or vice versa and why. please help me.

Oxalic Acid is a more potent acid (pka 1.27) than Citric Acid (pka 3.15) and is used in many household bleaching and cleaning products such as Barkeepers Friend. Citric Acid is used more as a chelating agent to make soaps more effective than as a cleaning agent on its own.
