Potential Vendors---- Now is the time......
You have been waiting for it........

The link for the applications is here- ready for you....Print it off, Fill it out, mail it in, send photos and please wait patiently! Hooray!!!!!!!

I've waited until after Warrenton to make sure all potentials could have time to get home, read their mail, catch up, unload, get back in the groove of things......So- if you are a Barn Sale shopper (not potential vendor) don't feel like you need to read the rest of this- unless you want to pass it along to a friend!

A casual reminder of what we look for- if you have been part of our show you already know this....Vintage, Antique, Unique, Re-made, handmade and other Goods--typically in that order.

November will be here before we know it! I have had potential vendors emailing for the last few months asking when they could apply- so I need every one to fill out an application and send it this way if you are interested in our show! Applications will be dated when they are received- so don't delay!! The review process is going to take several weeks- confirmations will start going out the first week of June. It is pretty busy around here- so I have to make time for everything! Once you are selected- your payment within 10 days will confirm your space!

I cannot wait to see what starts showing up in my mailbox....We have had Such creativity over the past few years, and it just seems to get better! I look forward to reviewing the applications and getting in touch with everyone. Please Please Please put viable email addresses that you check regularly.....that will be the Main form of contact/communication! Write legibly- names and phone numbers too, we want to get everything off to a great start!

Goods for Rent!

I had a wonderful time in Warrenton with my friends- two trips up....not my normal 3 or 4 times- and Sweet girl and I missed Junk O Rama prom- first time in 4 years that I haven't been there! That was a weird feeling- so I missed seeing several friends that night!

Over my shopping trips I had school and weddings on the brain- I guess it is because school is constant around here, and I have been in wedding cake mode since February! So, one of my purchases was a set of chairs for the school room from a guy who said 'Names Jimmy- what do you wanna gimmee?'....interesting way to start the bartering process! I purchased 5 salmon colored (they will get spray painted) chairs with racks on the bottom for books! I wish I could show you a picture- but they wouldn't fit in my car when we returned...so I have to make a trip to my girlfriends house to pick them up- Thanks to her sweet husband for letting us take his truck that day!!!

I toted my camera around both days- and did not take a single picture! ugh.....so sorry!
After much looking- I finally settled on these.....LOVE letters- Truly!

My plan for all of you out there- is to Rent these little letters for weddings! What better style for a vintage kick than to have these letters propped up some where for a wedding or reception- or photo shoot for engagement pictures!!!!!

These HOWDY letters can also be rented for weddings- Think sign in table....or graduation parties- for my Aggie friends......or just a good ol' Texas bbq kind of evening.....

Thanks to sweet Lori Raabe for this picture! I could have sold these letters 20 times at the barn sale- but I think they will be best used for renting to make people feel welcome at parties for years to come!

Onto more vintage.......
Here is a little look into a wedding I was honored to have the cakes for this past weekend. This couple had contacted me about cakes last year. At some point the bride texted me and said 'do you think there would be any vintage stuff we might could use at our wedding at your barn sale?'
My quick reply- 'Totally' you need to be there I told her!!! And they both came, and they both shopped, and they were both very happy with the trip!
Her gown and headpiece were very vintage inspired. Burlap and lace on the cake- simple and rustic.

Beautiful Bride purchased these super cute clutches from a

vendor at the barn sale- if you are reading this please comment- I want to know who created these darling little goods for all of her bridesmaids!!!! The bridesmaids were all in yellow- each had on a different necklace and hair piece- super adorable!

I thought this use of old books was brilliant for name places at reserved tables- gorgeous drawing prints with the family names printed and graced with a touch of lace. Super simple, super easy- super elegant!

below- Wrapped in burlap, ribbon, lace and buttons, simple soup cans were elevated to centerpiece status!

The couple found doilies at the barn sale and used them with abandon on all the guest tables! They were all so beautiful- the groom burned Song of Solomon 2:16 on wooden frames with their photos for a take home favor. I do not have a photo of this- but he also burned the names of the groomsmen onto wooden clothes hangers for their suit coats to hang on at the reception! Hand poured candles with more gorgeous doilies and milk jugs with added pizazz atop simple stained pieces of wood made the vintage decor really stand out. I totally forgot to take a picture of the back end of the old truck which was used to hold their gifts- it was too perfect!

A little taste of the grooms cake- he is an 'old Chevy' kind of guy....this was a replica of a gauge from a 1950's ish truck that he had sent as an example. The groom was really proud of it- he really loved the odometer with their wedding date! I was pretty tickled with it myself!

There you have it- letters for rent and a great sampling of a vintage inspired wedding- what a combination for a blog post! Hope you have a great week- and for all of our vendor friends returning home from Warrenton and Round Top- have fun unpacking and start thinking about applications for barn sale....hint hint the time is near!

Round Top - Warrenton Time!!!!

Howdy! Welcome to spring time in South Texas! The bluebonnets are blooming which means it is time for Round Top and Warrenton!

I am actually late on posting this as some vendors have been set up for a week already! Life has been busy around here and two sweet friends have called and texted to see 'when are we going to Warrenton?' So, I was forced to look at my packed schedule and find some time to slip away......

(wish we were heading up there in something that was put together that resemebled this!!!!)

I am looking forward to it- as I always do! Those of you that have read this for years know that I get kid in a candy store giddy as I am driving up there- it is so peaceful and then - There it is.....The Mecca for all of us that love to peruse!!!!! Antiques, vintage and the way things are displayed- Oh....I am getting excited!!!!!

I thought I would share a few pics from last trip- they were taken on a turquoise time frame......

No- I did not try this scale to see if it worked! But the color was sure eye catching!

It is amazing how attracted my eyes are to things of certain color schemes... I can see one thing in white- and then 5 booths away see it in red and my jaw drops! I have to be picky when it comes to purchases!

This can was still full- I was inspired by the print and the color!!!

I am looking forward to my 'girl' time with some amazing friends---and getting my 'spring fix' on all the GoOds that will be in Warrenton!

And.....Keep Posted all you vendors out there- The Applications for this falls Barn Sale are soon to be live on our site.....Get ready to print them off and ship them in- we are looking forward to seeing what GoOds are coming to Gonzales November 1-2, 2013!!!!!

If you do not get to enjoy Warrenton and Round Top- I hope you can find some awesome sales in your neck of the woods! Share them with us- we might just show up there sometime!!!!

Magnolia Pearls Place

Have any of you out there heard of Magnolia Pearl????

I know some of our famed readers have- two that really enjoy her work- and Robin herself (aka Magnolia Pearl)! Ms. Kristi Day of Checkered Past (a fabulous Barn Sale vendor) and Ms. Amy Boland of Amy Boland Photograpy (2 year Barn Sale photographer!)- Kristi has a few Magnolia pearl items in her closet (I know, I have seen her in the cute as can be things!)- and Ms. Amy has worked Magnolia Pearl fashion shows as photographer !!!!

Well- to my eyes delight today I caught a glimpse of the fabulous place that has imparted some of the inspiration for the Magnolia Pearl clothing company for 12 years. Did I see it personally- unfortunately not- just through the photos of Anne Lorys of Fiona and Twig. This amazing place is just outside Bandera, Texas aka Cowboy Capital of the World! New Venture amongst the Junk

Good Morning! Happy Valentines Day!

On this beautiful day in South Central Texas I thought I would share what is making my heart happy- In addition to my forever happy, God, family and friends!

I love this business- I love how we connect with each other on so many levels. I love how we have made so many new friends because of this business! I love how we can see something in its current state and know that with some love and attention it can become something else! People are that way too you know! Some are hiding behind a wall or shell just waiting for attention and love from just one person! I hope you can be the type of person to bring someone out of their shell and show them love! Some of our best Barn Sale vendors are that way too- they have told us; 'we have never done a show before - but we would like to try'. And to our delight they do more than try- they blow our socks off!

Two examples that come to mind right away ( I know there are more of you...so please forgive me!!) Are Bluebonnet Smiles and Sweet Cactus Pink- You talk about making a booth that stood out at our 2012 Barn Sale and huge smiles from the vendors (Katie and Tai respectively) --I am sending love today to those girls!!!! Not only did Bluebonnet Smiles set up their first booth with us- they are now on Etsy!!

I found sweet Katie from Bluebonnet Smiles on Etsy last night- I wanted to contact her because my sweet sister Tracy purchased a spa rag for me from Katie that I love using on my face! It is fabulous! Here is my reason for wanting more spa rags.....To give away to customers! You heard it- Why would I be needing to give away spa rags you ask? Well.....I've taken on a new venture- Junking can be messy business, and grimy, and sunny and well- hard on my skin!

First photo was 2011 Barn Sale with my little guy- skin is definitely grimy after being in the barn for a few days....Photo 2, My mom and I after a weekend junking trip two years ago...and Last- Warrenton Fall 2 years ago....wearing a big palm leaf hat to try and protect some of my face....I always pack sunscreen for those days of being out in the fields.......Junking is Hard on the Skin!

Flea Market Style Weddings

Welcome to February! Wow- This year is starting to fly by already! I have had in my mind that there would be at least a post a month- or more...guess I haven't started off too well for that! So- Welcome to our 2013! It is going fast and furious- no time to delay! I am totally excited that so many people have already approached us about this year's Barn Sale! It is already on minds of vendors and shoppers- we will plan on posting applications in April.... so keep tuned! November 1&2, 2013, mark your calendars!

Most of you know that hosting a show is A LOT of work- something we take pride in- we hope to continue making our show better- and in the mean time we take pride in announcing that we were listed in FLEA MARKET style Weddings!!!!

Wow-Eeeeee!!!!

I was shopping by myself a few nights ago (that does not happen very often, those of you with younger children know what I'm talking about) and decided to stop at the magazine rack- I knew that Ki ((a brand new I know we would have a ton of fun shopping together BFF (even though she has no idea who I am) and her crew had been working on this publication and was glad to see it finally out- so I flipped through a few pages- then about flipped out in the magazine isle!

I saw pages full of listings for stores and sales across the United States....since I had not heard anything I thought to myself- 'Wouldn't it be super cool if we were in this listing too?!?!'......I didn't have to think for too long- There it is in print!!!!!

Woot Woooo!!!!! Needless to say I bought the magazine. Not only that- but once I started reading it (I by the way am not getting married, I've already said my vows) I fell in L-O-v-E with this magazine! I dog eared so many pages and have so many more cool ideas now for projects......So- If you are reading this blog as an engaged gal or guy- we know you like vintage and unique, antique, vintage, hand made and otherwise made GoOds (otherwise you wouldn't be on our site!) go get yourself a copy of this to help you with your big day!!!!

The coolest Part- We actually had 2 brides that I know of (more I'm sure) that were at our November sale specifically buying for their wedding decor- Totally doing vintage themes! (I am tickled that I was selected as the baker for one of these weddings!) It is so awesome to see young couples take pride in our heritage- if only 40 or so years ago and touting vintage- making it part of their Big Day!! Taking things for what they were formally and giving them new breath in a different life- Makes Me Happy!

More Barn Sale 2012 pictures

Nancy Wilkins of Spur of the Moment Photography took some great pictures for us this year! She does great work in barns...her favorite photo opportunities are rodeos! She was so good to come see us again this year and capture some of the fun we had at our 5th annual Barn Sale. Below is just another 'sampling' of the weekend! Hope you enjoy the photo tour!

Sweet Smiles greeted happy shoppers as they entered the barn- Our friends at the front had a great time visiting and meeting visitors from across the state!

Fayerene and Carolyn - Simply Sisters
If you wanted Hot Coffee this was the place to be! Along with some great sweets, breads and Fudge- These ladies are sweeter than their sweets!!!! We are pretty partial- they are our Mom/Mother in Law and Aunt!!!!!

Hot chocolate - iced chocolate - any way you like it! I could not get enough of the iced hot chocolate- I enjoyed one each day- and could have had more!!! Super smart of them to put ice in- especially when it was as warm as it was! These sweet girls were all smiles and really enjoyed their booth! We are delighted to share in a great opportunity for them!

Carol with Just Homemade jams and jellies- this stuff was selling like hotcakes!!!!

Painted projects don't come much cuter than these goods from Lana! Such character is painted in each creation- we are happy she brought some fall color and cool Christmas characters along!

Anyone coming to our show would have thought this girl does shows every weekend- Tai had the coolest sign- as you can see, and a booth that was well thought out. Truth be known- this was her first show, and she Loved it!!!! We loved her happy personality, makes you want to spend more time in her booth with her cool finds!!!

I cannot drink anything out of a glass bottle now without thinking about Ms.Monika! Such time and talent goes into each of these beautiful creations! I'm thinking of saving a group of similar glass bottles for juice glasses!

Rounding out a corner, Kristen had a sign to go with any saying and furniture for the home as well- hand painted is the way to go!!!

Burlap- It's the IN thing!!!! There were a lot of creative handmade burlap goods! Unfortunately- we are not sure exactly whose amazing booth this photo was taken in- so if any of you know- please tell us so we can give due credit! Gorgeous lampshade and pillows with fun flowers- a great addition to a living room!

Vintage Soul TX
The time it takes to make these chalk signs is - well, lets just say a lot! They looked very inviting at the Vintage Soul booth- I wanted her to teach me how to do it, but it's not a simple thing! Their booth was buzzing all weekend- they enjoyed the show and we were so glad to have them with us!!!!

cowgirl art by Suzanne at Rusted Gingham- I enjoy making fun sayings! A sweet friend that I took 'junkin' many years ago for one of her first trips bought the one that said 'love 2 junk' and was super excited to have it- she is addicted to junkin!

Re-Sale Therapy with Marnie
Miss Marnie and her Mom brought all kinds of therapy into their booth! Great goods at low prices- they were busy the whole time!!!! Smiles all the way through- especially from Chuck who didn't have near as much to load in the trailer come Saturday evening!

Sweet little Lloyd being held by a friends daughter-he is the newborn son of the President and Activity Chair for the Gonzales County A&M Club- he needed a break from all the hard work!

Old Rusty Truck- Oh How you Make The Smile!!!! We (I) squealed when our friends pulled in the barn with it!!!! Key is in it- to take you where your imagination can go on the dirt roads!

These ladies were smiles all weekend!!! Lisa and Yuki prepped for months for this show- and it showed! They had a blast and did great as well- those smiles would make anyone want to visit their booths!

Happy Shoppers from all over the place- The above ones were just a few that Nancy captured! It was so great seeing groups of friends enjoying the day together! And, there were several 'couple' groups as well- we enjoy seeing the men shop, and then they would carry packages out to the car, then come in and sit for some coffee or a coke and visit! What a great time- and I love hearing 'Oh I remember Mom having one of those', or 'Grandma used to have one of those sitting by.....' you fill in the blank. I know to some people alot of this is just 'stuff', but to so many others they are memories that make them smile- and I'm glad we have a part in that! It takes a whole lot of work to coordinate something like our Barn Sale- and for me when I see people enjoying time with family and friends for a weekend and make it an annual affair- it makes it all so worth it!
Thank you to those of you that visited Historic Gonzales- the town merchants, B&B's hotels and restaurants were glad to have new faces!
Thank you all for being part of this sale and for helping it to grow over the past 5 years- we could not have done it without amazing vendors, and shoppers that come each year and then tell more friends and family! I love being able to promote family run businesses- our country was founded on those and I am glad to still be a part of that! Thanks for sharing in the Goods!!!!!

Barn Sale 2012 in Review!

What a Weekend!!!! W-O-W!!! That is how we summed up our Friday and Saturday experience at the 5th Annual Barn Sale in Gonzales, Texas! Thank each and every one of you that came to shop, that came as vendors and that came in your hearts! We had at least 2200 people from babies to grandparents and all ages in between come spend Friday and Saturday with us! The barn was full- yet still welcoming and cozy! We had SO many compliments on how nice each of the vendors were and that many great conversations were had among shoppers and vendors!

Shoppers came from all over- I wish I had a map with pins at the front showing where from in our great state! We had; the Woodlands, Beaumont, Balinger, Marble Falls, Corpus, Hondo, Kilgore and all points in between! It was so fun to visit with shoppers to see where they were from, how they heard about the show, and what they found! I can pretty much assume that not too many people went home with empty hands!!! This includes vendors- we all enjoy shopping from each other!!!

Our show photographer on Saturday- Spur of the Moment Photography, carried chalkboards and asked that towns of attendees be written so we could see where people came from! You might recognize these faces- they are actually vendors- Brandi and Mickey from Accumulations and Kristi of Checkered Past. They were all smiles- the weather kept a lot of people smiling! God blessed the weekend with warm air and light breezes!

You may recognize these two vendors as well-It's us- Tracy & Suzanne of Rusted Gingham!!! We enjoyed hosting some of THE BEST vendors in the state! Several drove for hours just to be part of the Barn Sale- and they were not disappointed! We were smiles all weekend- thanks to all of you for being part of the weekend! Friday photographer Lori Raabe caught all kinds of great signage from the show!

Goodness Gracious---We had the 'Goods'!!!!! The barn was overflowing with them! Our tag line- Antique, Unique, Vintage, handmade, re-made and otherwise made Goods sums up what was there! We didn't get to make it to all the booths- but tried!!! We saw SO many CoOl and unique things- Wow- Talent abounded!!!! We have received so many Positive compliments on the selection of vendors and their wares- we are 'selective' on which vendors are part of the show and we think that is what makes it so special! So thank you for appreciating what was there!!! The vendors also complimented the shoppers- such nice people, and they loved the kids! WE do too!!!!! Our youngest vendors made us Smile all weekend long!!!!

Cowboys & Cowgirls came to visit from the Texas Jr. High and High School Region 6 rodeo just across the walkway- these signs didn't last long....Happy Trails to them!

The displays and 'mini shops' set up in the barn were delightful- it takes a lot of time and thought to go into these displays and we appreciated vendors for their hard work! We had several first time vendors that you would have never known it was their first time- and they probably had the most fun!

Vintage Soul made a lot of shoppers happy with their selection, and I'm pretty sure they didn't go home with too much of these Goods pictured below! Vendors spend time all year shopping, fixing, painting, re-wiring, gluing, sanding, folding, sewing, creating- all to pull together for shows like ours. We are so Blessed that each of them wanted to be part- and that the shoppers that came wanted to enjoy their Goods!

At the end of the day Saturday the skies darkened and a few showers came through- but what followed was a sign of God's glory and his promise- a Beautiful rainbow- a Double Rainbow! We felt double blessed from our new friends, new vendors that have become friends and shoppers - we could not have the show without you!

Directions to Barn Sale Nov 2-3, 2012

In case you're coming to Barn Sale for the first time, or if you need a little reminder on how to find us, we've got you covered! Come on out next Friday or Saturday, November 2-3, 2012, and you'll enjoy historic Gonzales, Texas, along with a couple thousand other great folks who come every year to Rusted Gingham's Barn Sale!

The Barn Sale is located just over an hour from San Antonio and Austin, and about two hours west of Houston. We are in the JB Wells Showbarn in Gonzales, TX.

You can click on the map below to bring up the live map with links to local hotels and the ability to zoom in to see the road leading right into JB Wells Park and the Barn Sale.

If you like words better than maps, then these are for YOU! . . .

Coming from San Antonio:

take I-10 East toward Houston.
Exit on 123 South in Seguin. Follow through about 3 lights to Hwy 90 toward Gonzales.

Turn left (East) at Hwy 90. (You will pass a Whataburger just before this light). Follow Hwy 90 to Gonzales. This will take about 25 minutes.

After crossing the San Marcos River there will be a 4 way intersection with a Buc-ees gas station on the opposite right corner. This is Hwy 90/183 S intersection. Turn Right at this light and follow 183 over the Guadalupe River.

Just after crossing you will see a Large covered Rodeo Arena with green metal. This is the JB Wells complex. Take a right (road veers off to the right) and start slowing down- the road to the showgrounds will be on your right. Follow that road down about 1/2 mile and the entrance to the park is on your right- Cannot miss it. The show barn is the first large long barn you will drive by when you pull in!

Coming from Austin:

Take Hwy 183 South through Lockhart, and Luling. Follow south to Gonzales past Buc'ees gas station at I-10 and past Buc-ees gas station at intersection of Hwy 183/Hwy 90. Cross over Guadaulpe River and the park will be on the right- follow Hwy 97 to JB Wells Park entrance. The show barn is the first large long barn you will drive by when you pull in!

A&M + Tamales = Barnsale

The Gonzales A&M Club will again be selling Delicious Tamales at the Barn Sale (RealLy believe me- they are Delicious!) They will also have hot dogs, chili and fritos so you can have your choice of plain tamales, tamales with chili or Frito Pie. The weather is typically perfect for this type of food! They will also have tea and water!

All of the proceeds from this Chili and Tamale Fandango that the Club is hosting will go straight into their scholarship fund! You can pre-order tamales by the dozen by calling 830-672-8676 and letting them know what you need! Call by Oct 29 to get your order in! Think about a warm dozen to have with you on your way home from the sale.....

What about other food???? Throughout the Barn Sale you will find vendors with snack mix, fresh baked breads of all sorts (think kolaches, loaf bread, scones, banana bread, pumpkin bread) sugar cookies and some super sweet little ones will be selling cold drinks and sandwiches. Hot coffee and hot chocolate will also be available.

If shopping makes you hungry for a burger- then you can find one a few steps away over at the Arena. Have we mentioned yet that there will be a Jr. High and High School rodeo over at the Arena? You can go rest your legs and watch some great cowboys and cowgirls compete in youth rodeo!

Goodness gracious- We are gettin Excited!!!! Hope you are too!!!! Can't wait to see you!

Barn Sale Vendors Getting Younger

Yes, our Barn Sale Vendors are getting younger every year! We're so proud to include our youngest vendor yet! This little cowboy will be at the old rusty pick up serving up kid-favorite treats all weekend, in honor of "National Sandwich Day", which is Saturday, November 3rd. (no, we did not make that up.) On his menu are Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches and cold milk. Rumor has it he's happy to keep the chocolate milk for himself if all are not sold!

No cute little buckaroo should ever be without a side kick. You'll find his cousin near him at the barn with her little red wagon, delivering cold drinks and goodies. She's also made some adorable little finger puppets your little guys might enjoy in a Christmas stocking!

The girls will be back in their booths with crafts of their own.

Cute Names. Cute Booths. Barn Sale 2012.

We have tons of brand new vendors for our 5th Annual Barn Sale, and we just love the cute names they have selected for their booths. Today, we're highlighting a few of those names and booths.

Bluebonnet Smile! How can you not smile when you hear this name? So cute, and we love that the items Katie creates are largely made from recycled goods. Bluebonnet Smile will be the booth to find unique Christmas gifts, teacher gifts, Secret Santa gifts, and gifts for your favorite Rusted Gingham girl. (just kidding!) One of my favorite items she is bringing is this oil cloth apron in red polka dots...come see many others she'll have for sale at the Barn.

Flutterbies is another totally cute name we love! Lauren creates cute things that will appeal to your little girly side. Brightly covered letters for a child's room, bottle cap jewelry of all kinds, and lots of cute collage frames for all your adorable pictures. Next door to Flutterbies you'll find Sweet Cactus Pink! Tai is crazy talented with a paint brush, and you'll find an eclectic, bright, and cheery assortment of furniture and items she has embellished. Coming to us from Mason, Texas, Tai will be bringing dressers, doors, signs, chairs, and lots of other vintage finds. We're so glad to have Tai with us this year (we also love that she is a fellow home school mom!).

Another vendor name we love is Wild Blue Yonder. Sharla is an artist that loves color and the beauty she finds in her every day surroundings. You can see her passion in her painting as well as in lots of the vintage and junky finds she cleverly displays throughout her booth.

I met Sharla at Fredericksburg Trades Days where Rachel and I fell in love with a pink chandelier she had made from shells. It is now hanging in Rachel's room above this desk Jennifer (Woodley Cottage) painted with with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. OK, she RESCUED this desk for me, but that's another story for another blog post!

Artisan Alert at the Barn Sale!

We've got some awesome Artisans to alert you about for this year's Barn Sale! The Barn will be full of artistic creations and one-of-a kind designs (70 vendors to visit with). You'll find lots of repurposed, upcycled, vintage, antique, and handmade goods. Take a look at a few of the Artisans we are happy to introduce you to this year.

Francesca Watson Designs

Francesca is a fine jewelry artisan coming to the Barn Sale for the first time from San Antonio. Francesca uses primarily Argentium, fine and sterling silver, and the most interesting stones, glass, and crystal she can find. It is not uncommon for her to spend multiple days on one unique piece of fine jewelry. You'll be amazed at her creativity, her craftsmanship, and you'll LOVE her beautiful smile and warm personality.

Monika Potts with Sweetly Recycled

All of Monika's products are made from RECYCLED bottles! She cuts and polishes all the glass and each piece is original artwork. You'll find a beautiful display of wind chimes, hurricanes, water and wine carafes and glassware. Her chimes are particularly beautiful, each with a distinct sound created from beads, recycled keys, and washers. Monika is coming all the way from the Dallas area to bring you her finest creations!

Mike Grafa is a professional art teacher at Austin Community College. He is a seasoned artisan who chooses a dozen art fairs a year in which it participate. We are thrilled to have him at our Barn Sale! Mike will be showcasing his beautiful hand thrown porcelain. You'll find one-of-a kind pieces you can use to make your every day table setting spectacular. You will find gorgeous cups, plates, bowls, and casserole dishes. Come admire his craft and his great talent! (He's OK if you buy something, too!)

Patricia Gray with Silverlicious

Patricia is a seasoned artisan who spends about 6 months out of the year meeting folks across Texas and showcasing her beautiful handmade silver jewelry and accessories. I met her at he Lavender Festival in Blanco and just knew she HAD to come to our Barn Sale! You'll find a beautiful display of handmade Silver Wire jewelry as well as some other adorable accessories she punches from leather. Come say hello to Patricia and pick out something silver.

Charlotte is a veteran Barn Sale vendor we're so happy to see every year. This lovely lady and her family make their living creating elegant clay art and southern folk paintings. Such a precious and patient person, she arrives at the crack of dawn and carefully individually unwraps each piece of art to display in her booth. You'll appreciate her attention to detail and her beautiful art when you see it.

Shirley is a San Antonio jewelry artisan who enjoys traveling around the country showing her unique hand forged copper jewelry. She is a first-time Barn Sale vendor and we know you'll be super impressed with her artwork. You'll find original copper earrings, cuffs, necklaces, and bracelets, all crafted by this one talented lady. She also makes some totally cool items from antique silverware. Stop by The Dream Corner and see what beautiful things Shirley has dreamed up!

Shopping in Bastrop, Texas

The girls had some fun a few weeks back and enjoyed some shopping in historic Bastrop, Texas. We took the kids along with us. They had fun tagging along and I managed to snap a few pictures along the way!

Suzanne's friend Jenny had arranged for a shop owner to come open his doors for us to take a look around. He has this huge place downtown filled with all kinds of wonderful! He only opens up occasionally, and by appointment. We had so much fun digging around. I scored the wooden suitcase while we were there! I'm sure you'll be seeing it in more pictures - it's the perfect prop!

We found old signs, furniture, and the kids found lots of smalls to play with. I think Suzanne ended up with this piece. And a few other things that wouldn't fit in the vehicle. It required an extra trip back!

Afterwards, the kids used their profits from the summer lemonade stand to treat themselves to ice cream at the local drug store.

This was quite a nostalgic little trip. We walked into town from Jenny's and enjoyed looking at all the beautifully restored historic homes along the way. It is like taking a step back in time.

This was such a sweet garden, and I loved the heart on the barn!

Bastrop has a quaint town center with lots of restaurants and little shops. It made the Rusted Gingham shopping list! Have you ever shopped Bastrop? Do you have a favorite place we should know about?

Jenny's place is beautiful, and I always love to see the flags flying in front when we pull up.

So our summer weekends are winding down, and our Barn Sale weekends are upon us. We only have TEN more weekends until the Barn Sale! It's coming quickly. I can't wait to feel the cool breezes we usually have that time of year. Hard to imagine a cool breeze right now, but it's coming. Ten weekends. Barn Sale. Are you ready?

A Walk Through Carol Hicks Bolton Antiquites

Here's an incredible place to stop for inspiration
next time you're in Fredericksburg, Texas.

CAROL HICKS BOLTON ANTIQUITIES.

The sign out front says Laboratoire De Design -

and that's a perfect description of what you'll find inside.

I'm pretty sure I do not possess the appropriate vocabulary

necessary to describe this artist's antique warehouse,

so I think I'm going to let the pictures do (most of) the talking.

When I first arrived I asked if pictures were OK, and I got a green light! It's always best to ask before someone has to come grab your camera and ask you NOT to take them. That is embarrassing.

My girls and husband were with me on this trip, and they kept saying things like "Mom, what IS this?"

Or, "Daddy, look at THAT!"

I just kept nodding and clicking and saying things like
"I'm not sure, but isn't it cool?"

Somewhere about 10 minutes in to my visit, Tim (notice I'm on first name basis with him) came up and greeted me. Then he graciously offered me a bottle of cold water. It must have been the sweat rings from Trade Days he saw on my shirt. But I'm pretty sure this kind gentleman makes his way to every guest who visits and greets them in this manner.

After I stumbled all over myself and declined his cold bottle of water, he asked me to walk to the front of the store with him.
He had something for me.
I was instantly flattered, of course.
For me?

Are you ready for this?
He invited me to Provence!

It seems that he and his wife are offering tours they call
"a small gathering of like minded people who enjoy seeing foreign destinations, getting to know locals, and exploring the country area or region in an intimate way."

How could he have known?
I'm SO THERE! He had read me like a book.

I wonder how humorous I looked as he handed me the invitation and I casually read a few lines. "...9 luxurious nights in an ancient Mas nestled in the heart of the Luberon Valley. Touring the hillside villages of Gordes, Rosillon, Goult, Menerbes, Bonnieux and Loumarin." (I was digging deep into the recesses of my brain to try and recall ANYTHING that might help me clue in to these names and places...sadly, nothing)

"...Private Tour and wine tasting of a local vineyard followed by lunch at the chateau with the vintner and his wife."

It was too much. I skipped to the bottom line.

$4500, Double occupancy.

That actually sounded kind of reasonable, considering.
Then I realized I would be responsible for my own airfare.

As I abruptly awoke from my Provencal dream I realized Tim had quietly disappeared and gone about his work pricing things and placing things about the warehouse. He was kind and gracious. I felt like a 12 year old girl who had just peeked into a prom I wished I was dancing!

I went back to clicking my camera,
fully intrigued by the antiques,
the warehouse itself,
and the totally off the charts artistic presentation
of the goods in the store.

Confession time. I shoplifted. Nothing big. Just a tag. I had to have one. (Let's face it - I'm probably never going to actually purchase anything from these world travelers.) It was sitting in a pile of blank tags next to a black marker. Tim had slipped away to greet a delivery truck, and I decided I needed a memento I could afford (steal).

I love Carol's artistic design. She has tags printed, hole punched, and they use string, twine, or tape to attach. And the best part...she HAND WRITES descriptions and prices on her tags, just like we do! And it's not even beautiful handwriting. But it's personal, and I love that!

If it's for sale, it has a tag. A cool one.

Let this be a lesson, all you sellers of stuff.
Take note from Designer in Residence, Carol Hicks Bolton.
Brand your name.
Create a tag.
Tie it or tape it.
Be artsy like Carol!
It can't hurt.

Fredericksburg Trade Days

Fredericksburg Trade Days - a fun place to shop in the dead heat of a Texas summer – NOT! But if you go visit all the sweetest vendors in the place, it will be worth your trip, even in July! (Trade Days is open the weekend of the third Saturday every month.)

First stop for us was to visit Betsy and Elaine with Sisters Treasures. They are always so sweet and their space is FULL of great finds! (My girls filled up a paper bag full of little things they loved!) You can be sure to find them at our Barn Sale, having fun and bringing you great finds!

Next stop was the back of a barn to find sweet Theresa Cano with Garden Antqs Vintage. Theresa has some kind of fairy godmother-like magic...and her spaces are just dreamy…even on the Hottest day of JULY in TEXAS!

I was super happy to hear that our good friends Amy Boland and Kristi Day were also ~~sweating~~ shopping this day in Fredericksburg. I found Amy at Theresa’s space. She always gives big hugs and smiles! But Kristi had already jumped ship and headed toward cooler places – she may have been the only clear-headed shopper among us this day!

Here are a few of the things Theresa had for sale this weekend. So precious.

Theresa is super excited to be blogging for and selling at Marburger Farm Antique Show this year! She has been an inspirational anchor for years outside Zapp Hall in Warrenton. Now you can find her at her new home at Marburger Farm – in the Gulf Warehouse. Can’t wait for Fall!

Next stop was to visit with Stephanie Moreno with The Chicken Coop.

Look at all that awesome furniture! Love the colors! Stephanie lives near me in Floresville and is one of our favorite new vendors for the Barn Sale this year! She’s another one that doesn’t stop smiling – EVEN in the HOT, HOT sun of Trade Days in July! You’ll enjoy visiting with Stephanie at our sale in November!

Just as I left The Chicken Coop and headed into the next barn, I ran into this famous duo, Brandy and Mickie of Accumulations. They are always laughing about something, and I can never stop smiling when I’m with them. (see my cheesy smile below)No telling what was just said before the camera went click.

Accumulations joined our Barn Sale back when we were still at Suzanne’s barn – and they’ve been a favorite vendor every year since. You’ll find them laughing and giggling at the Barn Sale this year, and you’ll LOVE their beautiful vintage displays. They are the best at creating vintage eye candy!

Next to meet was Esther Thetford with Some Things Shabby. Esther will be a new vendor at the Barn Sale this year, and you’ll love her beautiful antiques and shabby furniture.

Esther was like Julie the Cruise Director on the Love Boat (does anyone remember her?). She took me to all the people I needed to meet and was such a gracious person. Can’t wait to see how well she does at the Barn Sale.

Across the way from Esther was Sharla Swain of Wild Blue Yonder. Oh my, Rachel and I had so much fun meeting Sharla and her daughters. Look what Rachel came home with for her room!

Sharla loves to paint. She paints on, well, anything! I loved her style

and her sweet personality just shows in all her creative artwork.

Sharla is joining our Barn Sale for the first time this year,
and she’ll have a little bit of everything for everyone!

Across from Sharla is another totally creative group of ladies that had the cutest seating ever! Carrie, Jenny and Vanessa create for “A Wing and a Prayer.” So cute! You can find them on facebook.

At this point in the day, we realized the four of us, (my husband and two girls) had not had anything to eat. We were so busy drinking, and SWEATING, we didn’t feel hungry. My husband found a vendor that had FREE SWEET TEA REFILLS all day long – so he beat a path back and forth as the girls and I kept shopping and talking.

Meet one of my new favorite friends, Nancy Diamond. Isn’t she beautiful? I was hot and stinky and sweaty in the barn, but Nancy was just glistening! She makes the most creative, beautiful woven scarves – totally upcycled from the most unlikely textiles.

Nancy modeled her scarves and shawls for us, and I picked out the one in the above picture. Lots of pretty greens and browns. The longer we visited the more we loved Nancy and her work. At some point, I crossed my fingers, said a quick prayer, and invited her to our Barn Sale. Two days later, she had cancelled another show, rearranged her schedule, and we were confirming her booth space at our Barn Sale in November!

I know you will be just as amazed as we were when you see what she weaves. One of a kind pieces of wearable art! Can’t wait for you to meet Nancy and see her work.

Trade Days is full of fabulous artists, junk lovers, and hard-working craftsmen. This man was one of my favorites. Gilbert Nuesch, from Weatherford, TX. He tears down old houses and barns and uses the wood to make the most beautiful frames.

You can find him at Trade Days and also at Warrenton Antiques Week, in the first field on the right. I love how he reclaims material and turns it into art! I left with an armful of his frames for my living room.

Sometime around 3 pm, we finally decided to make our way to the air conditioned van. My youngest had melted and was dripping all over, and we were all getting hungry for lunch/dinner!

But just before we left, we stopped in to say hello to Patty Jett of Old Glory. Patty and her daughter Megan joined our Barn Sale last year and were a huge success! Can’t wait to see Megan and Patty again this year. Megan has a very eclectic style that is so unique. You’ll find all kinds of vintage goods from these ladies at the Barn Sale.

So we shopped Trade Days in Fredericksburg in July, and SURVIVED! Although I recommend Trade Days and all our favorite vendors there, I would suggest visiting in the cooler months of the year. (Unless you don’t mind ~~sweating~~ glistening a lot).

We missed Deidra of Junkyard Dog on this trip, but she’ll be at the Barn Sale too! Hope you plan on coming out to see us in the barn during the cool days of November! (no glistening).

Yep. That pretty much sums up ME while shopping at this brand new, adorable shop just off Main Street in Fredericksburg, Texas.

Take my word for it.
You can't step in smitten and not be, well, smitten!

Everywhere you turn, there's more to be smitten with!

Actually, this tea towel was the main focus of my affection.

Don't look for it if you go to smitten.

But I opted for something else that I'd love to show you but it's a gift for Suzanne, and if I show you now, then she'll see it and the surprise will be over. So just close your eyes and pretend you're seeing the totally awesome other THING I bought. Oh yeah, and there was another thing, too. No pictures of that either. I'm waiting until her birthday, so just cool your heels a bit - she's a September girl.

How about I end with three tiers of smitten that will make your heart melt. When I saw this, I wasn't sure if I wanted to eat it or bathe in it. I'm pretty sure either would have worked for me!

There is absolutely NO excuse for you not to go to Fredericksburg and NOT experience pure infatuation at smitten.

How we won first place in the Round Top 2012 Parade

For all you folks out there that love small town Texas and especially small town Texas parades, you'll love this story. Here's how it all happened - the parade - THE TRUCK - the blue ribbon!

I call Suzanne sometime before school is out and ask her about her summer travel plans. In the past two years our families have missed celebrating the 4th together. This year, we discover we can make plans together again! Cousins will be thrilled.

I mention that I think it would be really neat to go watch the parade in Round Top this year. (knowing we'd have friends there and also just thinking it is the coolest, oldest running (since 1851), most vintage parade around!) Suzanne not only agrees it would be a blast, she says she wants us to be IN IT!

After a quick call to Suzanne's Aunt, she secures the most awesome vintage truck EVER for Rusted Gingham to parade down the street in Round Top. It's a beautifully restored Maroon (whoop!) 1936 Chevy Highboy, which was carefully transported from Pleasanton to Round Top and all prettied up for the parade.

THE TRUCK was feather dusted and spit shined and then it got a little Rusted Gingham adornment for the parade.

It was a HOT TEXAS Fourth of July kind of day, but we were so excited to be in the line up we didn't care. The kids were all ready to pass out candy and barn sale cards. We later found out that of the more than 100 parade floats and vehicles, our girls were the only ones walking the parade! We were so proud of them!

As we waited for the parade to begin, we had fun saying hello to all the other floats and vehicles. This float takes the cake every year...

But better than cake in our book is PIE! And what better Pie than Royer's Round Top Cafe! They were handing out mini pies and let me tell you, pie for breakfast is not a bad way to start the Fourth of July!

We loved this beauty! Especially the little side tray complete with a hot dog, Coke and chips. These two were having a blast and the parade had not even started yet!

There were so many totally awesome vehicles, lots of fire trucks, a large herd of horseback riders, and then there was this guy...

We were told he made it through the parade, but not without a little bit of coaxing, a lot of pulling, and strong arming along the way! Only in Texas!

As we were getting a few more pictures of THE TRUCK, the sweetest man EVER came up and suggested I take one more picture...and he held up that official blue ribbon that said FIRST PLACE! I had no idea who he was, but he had a clipboard in his hand and he looked Round Top official-like in his Old Navy t-shirt! I snapped this picture, then ran up and kissed him on the cheek. (Thank you, sweet man, whoever you are!)

So here we are, with Roger and Rosie, and the most beautiful truck that earned us the FIRST PLACE ribbon! We wanted to think it might have been the cool Barn Sale signs, or our gingham banners or the cutest girls ever ready to pass out candy...but when it was all said and done, we know it was THE TRUCK! (Thanks a million, Roger!)

We hung that ribbon proudly and joined the ranks in the most awesome vintage parade ever! It began with the blast of the cannon and we anxiously awaited our turn to move, as we were number 89 in line...

One of my favorite parts was listening to Round Top's own brass band playing patriotic music all through the parade and during lunch. I was shocked! These guys were awesome! For that matter, so was the float behind us that danced and smiled and played live Jimmy Buffet music all morning. So fun!

So there we went, right down the middle of town, like we knew what we were doing! THE TRUCK has made a few parades in his time...he knew what to do. The girls at Rusted Gingham have never been in a parade before. Check out our waves! What do you think?

We're pretty sure we might need some coaching in the waving department, but we've got the riding in the back of the truck thing down!

Thanks to Janie of Petticoats on the Prairie for the parade shot and the hugs! We love you rodeo queens! And thank you Round Top, Texas, our favorite little small town. It's hardly ever little when we're there (like during antiques week twice a year), but it never loses it's charm. Thanks for letting us be a part of your history!

So there you have it. The story of THE TRUCK, the PARADE, and THE FIRST PLACE RIBBON!

Straight from the Pizza Stone

The Garden is bountiful- Mine and friends alike. So, you can imagine the counters overflowing with garden goodness!!! I know Tracy is looking for ideas for her tomatoes, so here is a GREAT idea for all of you!

I spent 30 minutes last night going through every tomato recipe I could quickly get my hands on trying to figure out what new to do with our plethora of the red delicious counter decor that we have in abundance! Might I also mention- a ton of fresh corn given to us, Thank God truly for friends that like to share! I have basil growing like crazy- so we have already had tomato, basil bruschetta several times in the last few weeks.

Here is what I found that looked AmaZiNG!! Tomato and Corn Pizza- Yep- you read it Right!!!! I could not resist once I read the ingredients- I had them ALL- amazing!! This was found in a magazine called Southern Living- I know some of you have never heard of it- and that you aren't familiar with all their fabulous tried and true recipes.....so I try them for you and let you know that yes- They REALLY are ThAt good!!!! This was from July 2010 issue. So many amazing recipes- I kept the whole magazine (not just torn out recipes!)

So- it was a three part recipe and if you have the garden goodness like we do, I hope you will want to enjoy and make this from scratch as well! It was T-o-t-a-l-l-y worth it- all the little mouths at our table agreed, and we had alot on this particular day!

First things first- When we go visit my Cattleman husbands family, my mother in law always makes homemade pizza crust. Yum. I have found that I'm partial to crust that has some cornmeal in, on or around it. So, thanks to a cookbook from my sweet mother in law- I added cornmeal to the recipe and loved the results!!

Here goes; Taken from The King Arthur Flour 200th Anniversary Cookbook- you will not want pre-made pizza crust ever again!

TRADITIONAL PIZZA DOUGH

1 3/4 c. warm water (about 115 degrees)
1 TBSP sugar
1 packet or 1 TBSP active dry yeast
6 c. King Arthur Unbleached All Purpose Flour (it is from their cookbook........use what you have!)
1/4 c. olive oil (whatever flavor you prefer!)
1 TBSP salt
Cornmeal for kneading/rolling

Preparing the dough: Pour water into a mixing bowl and dissolve in it the sugar and yeast. When yeast is active, add first cup of flour, then the oil and salt. Add another 4 1/2 c. flour, mixing with a large spoon until the dough comes away from the sides of the bowl and holds together.
Kneading: Sprinkle the last 1/2 cup of flour onto your kneading surface along with about 1-2 TBSP cornmeal as needed. Turn out the dough and knead until it begins to feel as if it really belongs together, adding only enough flour to keep it from sticking to the board- or you! Let it rest while you clean and grease your bowl. Continue kneading the relaxed dough until it feels smooth and springy. I always enjoy kneading dough- kind of takes your mind off of anything else.
Rising: Form dough into a ball, place in greased bowl, turning so top is slightly greased. Cover and put where warm and draft free. Let rise until doubled- when you pike your finger in it and the dough doesn't spring back at you- then it's ready to roll!
Shaping Dough: Punch dough down, turn onto flour/ cornmeal mixed counter or board and knead out any stray bubbles. Cut it into number of pieces you need depending on whether thin or thick crust devotee. I will tell you- I kept it one and rolled onto a rectangular baking stone- it was a SuPer thiCK crust! I think it would make two round crusts (thin) easily!
Flatten pieces with hand, and with flour dusted rolling pin roll piece out- literally- from middle of dough outward. Never back and forth.
If you like a softer crust, lightly wipe pan with olive oil. If you like a dryer, crunchier crust, sprinkle it with cornmeal! When dough is about size you want, slide onto prepared pan. Brush lightly with olive oil to keep the topping from soaking in and making it soggy.
Baking: Pre-bake crust at 475 for 10-12 minutes before loading with toppings! It will probably puff up while baking, just press the air out of it before adding toppings.

I prepared the Basil Pesto while the dough was rising........

BASIL PESTO

My own version based on what I had on hand today!

2 cups fresh basil, loosely packed
1 cup toasted sunflower seeds (most recipes call for pine nuts- but those are not common in my house)
5 cloves garlic (peeled of course- and minced)
1 tsp salt
1.5 cups fresh grated Parmesan cheese
1 cup olive oil (your fav flavor)

Blend first 5 up in a food processor adding olive oil in a steady stream at the end. This will make more than you need for the pizza- so plan on having some good crackers or garlic bread ready for the rest of it! Yum!

Now on to the Good Stuff......

Tomato - and- Corn Pizza

3 small plum tomatoes (or whatever you have on your counter!!!!) sliced
1/4 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp freshly ground pepper
1 pre-baked pizza crust (you can buy Boboli or some other brand if you want!)
1/3 c. refrigerated pesto
1/2 c. fresh corn kernels
1/4 c. grated Parmesan cheese
1 tsp. sugar
8 oz. fresh mozzarella, sliced
3 Tbsp. fresh whole or torn basil leaves

1. Preheat oven to 450. Place tomato slices on paper towels. Sprinkle with salt and pepper; let stand 20 minutes.
2. Place pizza crust on a parchment paper lined baking sheet; spread with pesto. Stir together corn, Parmesan, and sugar. Top pizza with corn mixture, tomatoes, and mozzarella slices.
3. Bake at 450 for 14 minutes or until cheese is melted and golden. Remove from oven, and top with basil leaves.

Yum, YUm and YUM! The flavors are Amazing together!!!!

What to do with all those tomatoes?

I’ve got tomatoes all over my kitchen! They’re home grown and deep red and full of flavor and ready to be devoured…but I’m getting a little overdosed on salted sliced tomatoes as a side dish for every meal.

I SO appreciate all the friends who have grown them for me and shared them with me. (I’m too wimpy to sweat over my own garden.)

At church last Sunday, someone brought a truckload of vegetables, and I ended up with more tomatoes than I could handle. What to do?

New recipe.
Here’s what I tried.

Avocado Feta Salsa

The ingredients weren’t too daunting. I had everything I needed on hand, except the parsley and the feta, which I quickly snagged at my local HEB. (Yes, I said local. Thank God for my La Vernia HEB. It has changed my life!!)

First, I picked the pretties tomatoes I had and chopped them up bite sized.

Then I diced up a heavenly avocado and tossed it in.

Next was a little red onion. I only used about 1/4 of it.

I then added some snipped parsley.

There was also garlic, oregano, olive oil, and feta cheese.

The disappointing part of this salsa was that I had to let it sit TWO HOURS before I could dive a chip into it and taste it.

It was worth the wait. Full of flavor. Seasoned just right. And no one else in my family will touch it, which means it’s all mine!

It was perfect for my some of my delicious summer tomatoes. But I have so many left.

What do you do with your bumper crop of tomatoes? I’m ready for some more good ideas. Do share! (Your recipes, not your tomatoes. I've got PLENTY!)

Independence Day. It's a patriotic celebration, AND it's a spiritual marker for our country. A day to remember. A day to give thanks.

4th of July in Round Top, TX

It's time to celebrate our Independence!
Here's how the girls at Rusted Gingham enjoy July 4th.

It usually involves food of some sort. Something easy like dogs or burgers, and something sweet and cool like watermelon, cold drinks, ice cream, and something festive.

Last year, we used fresh strawberries and blueberries and enjoyed red white and blue star shaped shortcakes for dessert! YUM!

Every year involves a small town Texas parade of some sort. So far, we have enjoyed the parades as spectators. We take this role seriously, and are always dressed for the occasion.

Last year we went a few miles down the road to watch the parade in Comfort, TX . There's nothing like a small town Texas parade.

We made the trip with our friends vacationing here from New Mexico. Our two girls and their five boys loved seeing all the cool 'floats' in the Comfort parade. We adults enjoyed the fact that we got a primo spot under SHADE trees for the entire parade!!

Texas parades are always HOT!

It doesn't get any better than this....or does it?

Hmmmm....how about a parade that's been going on since 1851? How about joining the longest running Fourth of July celebration west of the Mississippi! How about joining us for the 4th of July parade in Round Top, TX! That's where we'll be this year. But not as spectators. We're taking the plunge and jumping right in the middle of this historic parade as participants!

The girls at Rusted Gingham will be 'floating' in on of the greatest old-fashioned parades around these here parts. Our float of choice will be a truck, and you're sure to see our Rusted Gingham name proudly displayed for all to see, along with our cute kiddos!

The civil war-era cannon will boom at 10:30, announcing the start of the Round Top parade -- a long, historic line of floats, cars, trucks, tractors, fire engines, trail riders, and longhorn cattle.

The parade circles Round Top square to the enthusiastic strains of Round Top's own Brass Band. Children dart out for candy and trinkets while families and neighbors visit on the town square. (That's what we'll be doing---tossing out Rusted Gingham treats and inviting EVERYONE to our Barn Sale November 2-3rd!)

As the parade wraps up, everyone heads a few blocks down FM 1457 to the historic Round Top Rifle Hall. There you'll find great brisket, pork, and sausage on the Hall's huge wood fired pits. German style potatoes, green beans, fixin's, and homemade desserts round out a delicious buffet lunch. It will be the perfect way to celebrate a great day for our country in a cute little Texas town that we love so much!

Rusted Gingham and Blanco Lavender

My oldest daughter and I made the hour and a half drive up to Blanco last weekend to witness beautiful Texas lavender farms, do some cutting of our own and then some browsing at the annual Lavender Festival in the Blanco town square. I didn't know what to expect, but I was hoping for something like this.

Blanco does have about 7 lavender farms, and they are all in various stages of development. I was disappointed to discover that the drought last summer did a number on our lavender plants, and that our fields are nothing like, well, Provence (above). Go visit my pinterest board for REAL lavender inspiration.

Our fields look like this. A few varieties of lavender were in bloom, but only a few. We were not given the opportunity to cut our own, but then there really wasn't much to cut. So we just enjoyed smelling it all, and tasting lots of yummy things. Lavender Lemonade was our favorite, and lavender peach salsa, lavender/lemon shortbread, lavender/chocolate brownies, and then we also treated ourselves to some locally grown peaches!

Our favorite stop was this lavender farm where they had a farmer's market at the roadside. I was so upset I didn't bring along a cooler. I could have brought home cantaloupe, peaches, and zipper cream peas. My Aunt Melba in East Texas and my Gran always made sure I was stocked with zipper cream peas this time of year. I haven't been able to find them in a long while. But here they were. (The ones pictured are black-eyes, the zippers were in the other room by the peach ice cream.)

Don't you just love fresh produce?! It looked so good and it tasted great. Sure wish I had a stand like this nearby. One of the funniest things we saw all day were the lavender port-a-potties! Never knew they existed until now. But they were everywhere. Can you imagine being the one in the port-o-potty board room one day who said, "Hey guys, I know you'll think I'm crazy, but I think we should start making these things in lavender...I know there's a market for them out there somewhere...." Ha. After the farms, it was off to the 8th annual Blanco Lavender Festival.

It was an overcast day, so it started out pretty comfortable.

There were lots of beautiful plants, super nice people, artisans of all kinds, and, of course, lavender booths.

We sampled everything there was to sample, but kept going back to the lavender lemonade! It go HOT in the afternoon. We met some great vendors who are very interested in coming to our Barn Sale!

I'll have to let you know about them in a separate post, but I was thrilled to make some new friends!

By 6 o'clock, we were back on the road home. It was a great day to spend with my daughter and to do something we both love. I don't think I can go shopping any more without her. She is the best at giving me the thumbs up for great things, and for making me walk away from things she knows I should NOT bring home ♥.

So I did, with her approval, come home with a leather flower bracelet, a garlic basket (to hold garlic), lavender tea, and lavender jalapeno jelly. I now wish I had picked up a little jar of lavender sugar, but I guess I'll have to get some in a few months at the Barn Sale!

So, readers, am I the only lavender lover out there?
