As you get ready for your upcoming summer positions, we wanted to point out 5 tips to keep in mind for making the most of your summer opportunities:

Do good work and work hard
Ask a lot of questions
Build relationships and stay in touch
Seek out feedback and other growth opportunities
Be professional and have a great attitude

And don't forget to have some fun while you are advancing your career!

Don't Take a Break During Spring Break

Spring break is coming up next week and we all know everyone needs a breather. Take some time off but don't miss the opportunity to use part of your spring break to advance your career goals. Below are some career development activities to consider fitting into your time off:

Network: Connect with someone that you have been meaning to get in touch with. An alumnus practicing in the field you are interested in. A speaker from an event you attended that you have been meaning to email for coffee. A former colleague you haven't spoken to in a while. Attend an event in a practice area that you are interested in and talk to fellow attendees. For tips on how to network at events, check out our previous posts on networking before, during, and after the event. You never know where your next job lead is going to come from.

Job Shadow: Follow an attorney that has the job you want for a few hours one day. You will learn first hand what a typical day in a particular practice looks like. Job shadowing is one the best ways to learn if the field you are considering for your career is a good fit for you.

Informational Interviews: Contact employers that interest you and ask for informational interviews. We have posted a presentation on information interviews under the Resources tab in Symplicity (search for keyword "information"). Conducting such interviews gets you information but also puts you in the employers radar as a credible candidate for any future opportunities.

Update your Materials: Use Spring Break to update your career materials. The Career Development Office is open during the break and counselors are available to assist. Getting your materials in shape now will put you in better position to apply to opportunities faster.

Manage Your Professional Brand: If you don't have a LinkedIn account, consider using some time next week to start one and become active. You should also use the opportunity to evaluate your social network privacy setting and deleting any details that could jeopardize your career. Don't let questionable content on Facebook (or any other social media site) diminish your career capital.

What Law Firms Expect Graduates to Know

Being a successful lawyer is not just about knowing the law. If you plan on working for a law firm after graduation, there are things that are you are expected to know without having been told. But what are they?

Through a collaboration between its Law School and Lawyer Professional Development Sections, NALP, The Association for Legal Career Professionals, has published an article to answer just that question. Here are some highlights of what law firms expect their entry-level associates to have learned before coming to them:

Understand project management and process improvement concepts
Build your professional network while in law school and keep in touch with fellow students - this is where your future business referrals will come from
Have a client development plan as an entry-level associate
Learn everything you can about the firm's clients
Learn the theory of law but also the practice of law - gets hands on legal experience but also know practical skills such as responsiveness, timeliness, and how to respond to constructive criticism.
Be involved in extracurricular activities - especially professional or industry organizations
Know the soft skills - communication skills, presentation skills, ability to delegate, and the art of giving and receiving feedback, among others.

Walker Minority Scholarship to provide first-year minority law students with a valuable employment experience early in their legal career, this scholarship will be awarded to a minority candidate who demonstrates leadership skills, academic strength, service to the community and an overall commitment to excellence.

Minority students in their first year of legal studies currently enrolled in an ABA-approved law school are eligible to apply for the scholarship. One scholarship in the form of a $10,000 cash award (less any applicable taxes and withholdings) towards law school tuition and other law school related expenses will be awarded. In addition, the scholarship recipient will receive a paid summer associate position for the summer of 2013.

The Delaware Minority Job Fair Committee of the Delaware State Bar Association invites Rutgers School of Law - Newark 1L law students to participate in the Job Fair's 1L Resume Collect program. The Job Fair and its participating organizations (corporate, law firm, and public interest/sector legal employers) seek applications from highly-qualified 1L students with a demonstrated interest in career opportunities in Delaware. Fish & Richardson P.C. offers fellowships to diverse first year law students in their ongoing firm initiative to recruit, retain, and advance attorneys who will contribute to the diversity of our practice and of the lgal profession. The 1L Diversity Fellowhip Program is comprised of four components: mentoring, $5,000 scholarship, a paid summer associate position in the domestic office of the student's choice, and participation in the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity 1L Scholars Program.

Candidates must be in good standing as a first-year law student at an ABA accredited law school; demonstrate a record of academic and professional achievement; contribute meaningfully to the diversity of the firm and legal community, and have a sincere interest in Fish & Richardson's practice.

The New York County District Attorney's Office Diversity Committee will host the 4^th Annual Interviewing Skills and Resume Workshop on Thursday, November 8, 2012 from 4:30 – 7:00pm. A panel of Assistant District Attorneys will discuss how to improve your interviewing skills and successfully navigate the interview process. Learn what we seek in applicants and have your resume critiqued by members of our Hiring Board. An opportunity to meet the members of our Diversity Committee will follow the discussion.

To RSVP, you must email your name, law school, and year of graduation to resumeworkshop@dany.nyc.gov by Wednesday, October 31, 2012. Students who would like their resume critiqued by a member of our Hiring Board must indicate “Resume Critique” in the RSVP.

The program is open to current law students on a first come, first serve basis. The on-site resume review critique begins at 4:30pm and the panel discussion will commence at 5:30pm. All portions of the program will begin promptly.
