Okay, Android phones. Where to begin.

There seems to be a lot of people with these wonderful handsets, programmed with an incredibly powerful little operating system; but only a handful of them are getting the very best. A lot of people are having problems, and very little response is to be had from Google regarding the faults. So, in the sense of common decency, I decided to put together a few pointers, tips & tricks with which, hopefully, you can get the very best out of your new shiny smartphone.

Devices used - T-Mobile (Huawei) Pulse mini / x10 (Mini Pro / u20i) series / SGS

First off, before we jump into the heavy stuff, make sure you have the following site running in a second tab on your screen - XDA . If you need further guidance, or are looking for a custom rom to download & install onto your device, then make sure this is your first stop. If you're looking for immediate help, DO NOT POST ON THIS BLOG; try using the search function on the XDA website first!

Rooting

Many android users will no doubt have heard of "rooting", the act of gaining root permissions to access & modify the phones android installation at the base level. You may have seen android apps with *root* in the title, denoting that, without Root access, this app WILL NOT FUNCTION. One thing of note, before we progress:

ROOTING YOUR ANDROID SMARTPHONE WILL (in most cases) VOID YOUR WARRANTY.

But backing it up beforehand, and then restoring the original framework before claiming on the warranty, is the key to genius. So, let's see how to do all this jazz.

SUPERONECLICK

This program will be your best friend. Treat it well. Check the compatibility list on the website to make sure your phone is there (to be honest, it works on basically all current mainstream android handsets, so it's worth a crack anyway!).

Download the program and install.
On your phone, go to settings>applications>development and check Usb debugging is enabled, and while here allow installation of unknown source apps. This will be helpful later.
Make sure your pc has the usb drivers for your phone (i.e., for htc phones, make sure you install the pc companion, you can uninstall afterwards).
Plug the phone in via usb. Do not mount, if prompted.
Hit Root (superuser permissions)
let it do it's thing.
Watch your phone. if you get a message saying "Superuser is asking for root access" or similar, then allow.
Et voila! Your phone is now rooted! Next, what to do with this new-found power.

You'll know have a custom recovery image installed on your phone. Check how to boot into your model over at XDA, normally it involves hammering the back button after the boot screen. This Custom Recovery will allow you to install Custom Roms, to backup your phone, restore it, install custom frameworks & updates, clean the dalvik cache, perform factory resets, the works. It'll come in helpful later.

Root programs

Superuser - This is what your phone uses to ensure it can access the firmware at the base level. you'll only really run into it when a program requires root access, which you'll normally wan't to allow.

Titanium Backup. - This thing will save so many headaches it's untrue. I'd suggest paying for the pro key (I did, and never regretted it). You can use it to fully backup EVERYTHING on your phone, and restore it all back after a factory reset. in minutes. I suggest you do this directly after rooting, as it requires root access, and will help soon. To backup, press the menu key, then batch, then backup all apps + system data. Let it run. Done!

Root explorer - This will allow you to . . . explore . . . the framework installed on your handset, to allow editing of sections therein, copying items to and from, finding lost files, etc.

Terminal Emulator - You may never need this, boot it normally installs with Superoneclick. Can be used to code extra lines into the installed framework, amongst over things.

Importance of backing up

I cannot stress this enough. Backup you phone before you even consider progressing and installing custom roms, etc. That way, you always have a copy of the stock framework to fallback on. You can always make multiple backups, so you can switch between mods, if you so choose (although clockworkmod's rom manager would be a more advisable way of doing so)

Cyanogen

"CyanogenMod is an aftermarket firmware for a number of cell phones based on the open-source Android operating system. It offers features not found in the official Android based firmwares of vendors of these cell phones." If your looking for the most up-to-date mods & roms for your phone, check hear as well as XDA. Find yourself a Rom you like the look of, but don't forget to check what may not work; in case you lose a key piece of functionality you desperately require on a daily basis.

Acquire aforementioned Rom, and copy to memory card.
Boot phone into Custom Recovery
Perform a factory reset, including wipe battery stats & wipe dalvik cache under advanced.
Navigate to install Custom update.zip from sdcard. select it.
Find your Custom Rom on the sdcard and use the home key to select. all the install to run.
Reboot your phone when finished, and BE PATIENT. The phone will take an ice-age to start.
After boot, make sure you got to settings>Wireless & networks>Enable data coverage.
When complete, navigate to the market and install Titanium backup.
Go to batch (as before menu>batch), and restore all apps & system data.
Done!

To install themes, download the theme, Then boot into Custom Recovery, navigate to install custom update.zip from sdcard and install the theme!
I'd suggest you use ADW launcher or ADWlauncher proEX, if you're looking for complete visual customisation; so far this has been designed to give you more power, more options, better speed and greater battery life. A ADW theme will allow for visual congruency across mod images/backups

xda for support

Don't forget you can always check the forums; if you have a bug, chances are someone else has too and already reported it; if not, then DIY! plus, you may get new hotfixes to fix them! But most of all, check out the new features of your custom rom, explore the settings, and see if it's more powerful than ever!

Accessibility

A set of programs can be installed to aid those with sight or hearing impairments. Navigate to the market, and search accessibility. Find your carrier's acess set (named as such, I.e. T-mobile carrier access preferences). Install and open. Install programs as needed.
Note: This will require a sighted person to install.

x10 mini pro specific

Check to ensure you can change the keyboard layout to one that matches your phone's language.

If you wish to have the power button act as the "end call" button (instead of sliding); then navigate to Root explorer & open. Navigate to Sys/usr/keylayout & longpress the files, until you get the popup allowing you to open in text editor (make sure the file is set to R/W in the top right corner). Open the files until you get one that has a full key layout, such as; Key 2 1 WAKE, Key 3 2 WAKE, . . . and so on.

Then Modify the key "PowerButton" by deleting and replacing with ENDCALL

Menu>Save & exit.

Reboot phone.

Et voila! try a test call to the speaking clock, and press the power button to hangup!

Note: this should work on most phones; give it a try!

You can also use root explorer this way to edit the lcd density on mdpi devices, by modifying the Framework. Navigate to /system/build.prop. find the line ro.sf.lcd_density=120 , using the text editor.Change to 110 instead of 120 for easier viewing / smaller icons!

Market issues:

Having trouble downloading items? Download unsuccessful? Try the following:

Goto settings>applications~>installed applications>market>Clear cache + Clear Data. Try the market again.
Try unmounting / remounting the SDCard.
Try clearing the media cache (same as above, mediastorage), followed by rebooting.
Finally, are you using an @Googmail.com account? if so, login, and look for the message that they are changing to gmail soon! click to change the account. Backup your phone. Factory Reset. when the setup manager comes up, put in the revised account. install titanium back and restore. et voila! try the market now, all should be good as new!

Nintendo Miss a Trick . . .

Honestly, think to yourself; how good would a portable (i.e., on your smartphone/iphone/tablet) Pokémon game be? Imagine, using the augmented reality dynamic afforded by the smartphone's rear camera, and using some of the battle mechanics of the "Invisimals" game for the PSP, to be able to point your camera into the real world, and have Pokémon rendered on screen, for you to battle with and catch, trade and evolve? Surely anyone even remotely interested in this franchise would, at least, download a demo version? Considering the latest iteration of the series is looking to shift 7M. UNITS . . . . . if the demo incoroporated ads, that's a hell of a lot of revenue, even for only 10% of the current Pokémon market. But Nintendo say no. In a quote from Kotaku's post on the matter;

"Nintendo's decision to only develop games for its own hardware

"hasn't changed and won't change.""

If the current android market stands at just below 50% in the US alone, which roughly equates to 76.8M users, and is set to rise, surely Nintendo should stop focussing so heavily on new, untried hardware, and start dev'ving for the tried & tested Android/Iphone market? Even the 360 has an Android app. . . .

But then again, just look at the Wii U. It really does seem Nintendo are losing touch with what their users really want in life. The new touchscreen bonanza, (picced below), revealed at E3, has currently: No games ready (all in Dev), No 3rd party support (yet), STILL no media playback (put in a BR drive, but no BR playback? What?), No native ethernet support. . . . . . But it has a shiny touchscreen!! LOOK LOOK!! LOOK AT THE SHINYS!!

Not a very effective marketing soloution, against TPTB (Apple, BB, Samsung, Motorola, all kings of the Touchscreen/interactive field), and maybe one Nintendo should start taking pointers on.

What do we want? TOUCHSCREENS!
When do Nintendo want them? TOUCHSCREENS!

It's late in the day, but hey, I woke late! So, here's today's chunk of news for your eyeballs to ingest;

We *Might* not live in a hologram after all . . . After watching the original BBC1 Docu on this, I did a buttload more reading (I was intrigued, as with all preposterous theories of astrophysics), and rapidly started the debunking process, and came to one final conclusion: if all the information from a given universe is stored at the edges in an infinite informational edge; how do dark body objects interefere with the physical representaion of the information if the very information that it intends to interfere is stored an infinite distance away? If left to me, we'd all be in levi's and black shirts.

Studio Ghibli

Creators of some of the most fantastic films I think I've ever seen (Tell me you didn't love 'The Cat Returns'), and now they're back. But there seems to be some crossed streams here.

We have From Up On Poppy Hill first, which IMDB lists as July, 16 for a release date; but then, a few days later, July 29, Arrietty comes out with it's US dub in theatres:

"While the trailer marks the English-language debut of any footage from the film, a separate voice casts is being prepared for the American release. The UK version stars Saorise Ronan, Olivia Coleman, Tom Holland and Mark Strong while the US version features Bridgit Mendler,

Will Arnett, Carol Burnett and Amy Poehler."

While this is all good news for lovers of the Studio Ghibli series (aren't we all?), it's a shame that the western world is A FULL FILM behind the current release schedule being actioned by Studio Ghibli!

But hey, if that means we have to wait a bit longer, well, so be it. It does take a hell of a long time to re-encode new audio on films, and, considering who's making it, I'd rather they focussed on details & perfecting process, rather than hurry for a release date!

Have a good butcher's at the trailers below, and see if you think it's worth waiting an extra year for UK/US Dubs on films.

Ever heard of BeHance?

I hadn't until a few weeks back. It bills itself as "THE Creative professional platform"; and you know what, they might be right. Being able to upload a full portfolio, with Resume, in Hi-Def, for free, isn't a bad start. Add A/V support, a full networking side & the ability to follow your fellow artist; well, it creates a social site halfway between linkedin, and Deviantart. For this sole reason alone, I'd probably recommend it; but give you these pointers:

There are alot of people out there with the same idea (get creative, be creative, start getting creative jobs), so competition is fierce. Make sure you stand out! Have a diverse portfolio that encompasses your wide range of talents, with a few pieces really concentrating on your "style".

But most of all, don't hold back! Be you, make sure each shot has a little "you" in it, and be daring!

Here's a few pieces, taken specially with an x10 Mini Pro android smartphone, using the "Vignette" app and some Photoshop CS5 Aftertouches. Who says you need a DSLR!?

Take 60g of Fondant Icing.
Add 15g of Green & Black's organic Cocoa.
Sift into bowl.
Add 1/2 tsp of Banana flavouring.
Add 50g Butter (Room Temp) & 50g Peanut butter.
Mix together 2tsp of Strong Coffee (I use Alta Rica), with 1tsp of boiling water.
Add into mix and stir until stiff.

Et Voila! Lovely Banoffee-Style icing, for all your cupcake needs!

Oil spill in Yellowstone River

"Early on the morning of July 2, we discovered an undetermined amount of crude oil was released into the Yellowstone River from an ExxonMobil Pipeline Company (EMPCo) pipeline. EMPCo deeply regrets this release and is working hard with local emergency authorities to mitigate the impacts of this release on the surrounding communities and to the environment.

The release originated from a 12" crude pipeline operated by EMPCo that runs from Silver Tip, MT to Billings, MT. The pipeline has been shutdown and the segment where the release occurred has been isolated. All appropriate state and federal authorities have been alerted."

Seems yet another big oil company taking a beating . . . do these companies have PR divisions, or are they just paving over public opinion with more bitumen?

Seems a certain Eritrean volcanic mound has been kicking up a storm in the Afambo area. CNN not reporting, most of the current Mainstream Media are letting it slide; why?

Here's some of the footage and write-up from Irish Weather Online , but this kind of activity is not really unheard of in open Rift Zones .

The Theory.

Ze Theory. Et Voila.

It's something o'clock in the morning and i get another one of those stupid stoner impulses to regurgitate the mulling-overs of my frantic mind onto digital papyrus, as it were. So I figure, why not finally type down my version of "The Theory".

First off, bare in mind, anyone can believe what they want to believe. Remember the freedom of thought, conscience and religion, and freedom to express your beliefs? Well don't forget it. It's your most valuable tool, weapon and shield in your arsenal. what you believe should be everything to you. have faith in that which you believe, and have passion in your faith; but do not be so dogmatic that you cannot see flaw. Be ready to accept difference, that others seek enrichment, just in a different way to you.

So anyway, back to the theory. Lets consider the birth of the universe for a second. all of the matter in the universe at present, all of that energy, be it nuclear, psychic, whatever you choose; was contained in that infinitesimal speck. That energy then expands outwards massively, as a huge dense field of energy. here i start to speculate. what if all this energy, having been condensed into a singular point, became so tightly interconnected at the subatomic quantum level, that as it expand this interconnectivity did not break, merely expanded as a great field of energy.
This great network would ideally exist as the super string; not as tiny particles, but billions of them tightly woven, stretching from all points to the heart of the universe to it's spatial dimensional edge, where the dimensions would overlap upon themselves forming a aphasic sphere; existing out of dimensional time with itself, holding itself distinct due to the universal reverberations of the super string, caused by the field of energy and the fluctuations of energy upon it. these could be stars, supernova, comets, explosions, lightning strikes, even something as small as a thought process conjures energy within the neurons, and on a quantum scale, a thought process is a massive movement of energy. So, it could be easily said that all of us are interconnected, no?

   But what does that mean? well, remember basic thermodynamics: energy can never be created nor destroyed. so when you die, where does that mental energy, that only exists on a subatomic level, shunt itself to? well, here again i speculate. i consider that it would conduct itself through the easiest available route: and what is more readily available than the primordial network of the universe?
   So, I propose that all mental energy, of anything that has ever existed, would exist at some level as a fluctuation in the super string, as that energy can only be recycled. So to consider that the planet itself would propose a very large quantity of super string, almost as a hub for the energy. look at how the planet formed itself, an aggregate of energy and rock held together by gravity, and heated by the energy of friction and electromagnetism. is it so hard to believe that our own mental processes, imprinted to the super string, become part of the planets hub? would this one great hub not contain the thought processes of every single creature that has ever existed?

   Lets take this even grander. consider the end of the universe, as the web contracts upon itself, where the universe has reached pure entropy and collapses to the single point. this would be a point of such infinite power, so incredibly dense. but if all the mental energy of the universe were contained in that point, it's pull on the super string could be enough to spark it into life itself.
   Consider. The thought of life breathing life into itself. Is not our primary concern self preservation? are we not made purely for the continuation of the DNA within us? do we not hold the preservation of life above all things? this is because we contain within us awesome power, that has been used possibly infinite times before to create the very universe in which we live. This is our divine spark. The very thought of life. The String of the universe woven into our very DNA since the dawn of the universe.

So would not this great singular consciousness at that very beginning point of the cosmos not be considered God itself? The one great thought that began the universe: LIVE. If so, consider that in that form, God truly would exist. not as some mythical being sitting on a cloud, but as a vast web of interconnected energy that exists within all of us. Sounds like star wars?
But think. Say a person simply had greater capacity for mental energy than anyone else. they contained more of that divine spark, a greater connection to the super string due to increased neuronal activity in the brain. would this person in ancient times not be seen as a prophet? if a person could learn to manipulate their mental field and move the string around them, would this person not be a telekinetic or magician? Suddenly, all the religions start to make sense when viewed under the same light. But what of the afterlife? You have the knowledge that your mental imprint will exist in the universe forever, within the node of this planet's core, it's strongest point of connection to the string. surely merging with the one galactic consciousness field and realising the great divine truth of life, surely this would be a matching fit for heaven?

Do i have morales to go with this? no. do i have a dogmatic code? no. Do i know a way of proving it with current science. I'm almost 99% sure, but I'll talk about that another time.

The point is, I think i can prove it. I think for once, I can prove that all the conceptions of god are true, there is an afterlife in one form, and marry science and religion for once. IF i can test it. Am i kidding?

It's taken me years to finally summon the courage to publish this somewhere on-line. It's all backed up elsewhere, this is just the top of my head version while i have the confidence to write it. I've done my maths. I've read my physicists, theorists, astrologists, philosophers and nut jobs; I'm ready to take on comers: but if you can't understand why some people would hate this article, then you're crazy.

Just, read it again, and be objective before you scorch the earth. Maybe it's practically a living thing, a colossal node for all the electromagnetic mental energy expended in the planets life. We are made of the planet. We return to the planet. we are born of the same dust and light as it is. It deserves our respect, don't ya think?

So.

My first ever real blog post.

*dramatic music*

Tadaaaaa! Yeah. I finally set up a page. With my writing on it. That's not related to Facebook. And that's a good thing. This is something I should have got around to a long time ago. I needed to create a symposium of ideas, emotions, concepts & feelings, which others could interact with, explore, and even explain. But, the main ingredient in this mix is: you've guessed it! ME. So lets give you a recap as to just who I am.

Born in Crewe, 1984, to a family of teachers & history one side, drunken violence & bitterness the other. Obviously luck wasn't on my side; after just a year with the good side (my father's lot), the coin flipped and i was with the Mothership. And that thing packs a punch. So somethings happened that I'll likely never remember, but I'm granted a brother & a sister at this point (by other fathers), who will be wrenched from me into a life of hate by my mother, as my father comes to take me away (after my mother dumped me at the social security offices). So not the best start.

typical social maladjust story follows. Goth phase goes like clockwork, as does the typical ADD during juniors & secondary, leading to depression in later teens, and outright rebellion. so i do the goth thing. then something terrible happens, suffice it to say, it was pretty traumatic. you wouldn't really have wanted to be there.

imagine dropping a huge glass jug full of milk on a black floor. it makes a huge mess and a giant fuss, right? it was something like that. but with people. and no jugs. or floors. but it wasnt the everyday typical teen shit, it traumatised me something chronic. i became homeless, jobless, and started smoking marijuana to treat the depression. i was relying on the kindness of my friends, and sometimes strangers, just for a safe nights passage, or a warm meal. it sucks, but we must move on.

so i leave the cesspool of an area to rot in it's own juices, and move out to chelmsford. all views on essex aside, i love that place. i rebuild my life, make amazing new friends, and life is good. Somewhere in the middle of all this toing and froing, just before chelmsford, i decide it's a good idea to throw my motorbike at the ground with me on it at about 80. i spend 6mths learning to walk again. fail.) Life progresses in essex, i build relationships with my friends that will last years, and finally begin to really relax. then one shit relationship and everything changes. for the better. i gain control of my own life, kick her out back to her parents, and start my own life afresh. no more goth, jeans and shirts. it makes me happy.

the gadget phase started here, when i started working again. it was at this point i also put myself through college (after a single year at college after secondary school; i was somewhat of a terrorist at school. i knew my stuff, but my, i was a bastard to control. because of this i wasnt allowed to stay at the schools sixth form, and had to go elsewhere.) studying Fine art & design. i meet a girl. we break up. i meet another girl. i choose a uni to go to as she's going there. i go to the uni to study education so i can lecture art to college kids. i cheat on girl. break up with girl(s). i rebuild life again. the uni screws me over for 3 years.

and BAM! you know my history. You'll get to know the rest once i start posting Fo' real. Here I am now:

Living with my gorgeous girlfriend, who used to be a lesbian (Yeah. that was a tricky, messed up situation to go through at uni, with 3rd year work, and three other girls to deal with, as well as crippling depression and a growing drug use issue. But, I love her. Truly. Her name's Kat, Or "Kitty" hence the paint. That's for fancy dress. She doesn't really look like that, all half cat n that)

I'm happy at the moment. But I'm high right now. And I'm on Citalopram (don't worry guys, no crazies). So I'm balanced. It's at this point I should point out, I'm also a strong weed activist. Having done serious academic research into the area, I can say this, and know that many thousands of eminent doctors, senior police chiefs & politicians would agree: Marijuana Is Safe For Personal Use In Small Quantities. You know it. I know it.

So here's the end of my first post, and what have we learned. first, i seriously lack the compunction to go back and correct all the capitals and punct. up there; I'll leave it to you to muddle through. Just take me as I am, and my words as my voice;

Cos' you'll only get the truth from me.
