Neil Armstong: First Man On The Moon

Neil Armstrong was born in Wapakoneta, Ohio, on August 5, 1930. After serving in the Korean War and then finishing college, he joined the organization that would become NASA. He joined the astronaut program in 1962 and was command pilot for his first mission, Gemini VIII, in 1966. He was spacecraft commander for Apollo 11, the first manned lunar mission, and the first man to walk on the moon.

Armstrong along with Michael Collins and Edwin E. "Buzz" Aldrin, he was part of NASA's first manned mission to the moon. The trios were launched into space on July 16, 1969. Serving as the mission's commander, Armstrong piloted the Lunar Module to the moon's surface on July 20, 1969, with Buzz Aldrin aboard. Collins remained on the Command Module. At 10:56 PM, Armstrong exited the Lunar Module. He said, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," as he made his famous first step on the moon. For about two and a half hours, Armstrong and Aldrin collected samples and conducted experiments. They also took photographs, including their own footprints.

Armstrong died at the age of 82, from complications from a heart bypass surgery, but usually deaths of this magnitude often give viewers the chance to reflect, to put into perspective lives of great accomplishment or great notoriety. Not so with Neil Armstrong. His death was like his life: strangely silent given the magnitude of his achievements. Armstrong will be forever remember but he was never given the credit where credit was due. Everything Armstrong did for the United States and space exploration should truly be remembered and never forgotten, so the next time you go outside on a clear night and stare up at the moon give Neil a wink.

5 Tips On What To Expect During First Week Of College

For most students, the first week of college is a big fat tangle of emotions. You’re excited to be out on your own, nervous about what’s coming, maybe even a little homesick. Want to know what it’s going to be like? I’ve got you covered.

Move-in Day

You and your parents will spend a good portion of the day unloading your stuff, meeting your roommate, and running errands to hunt down the super important things you somehow forgot to pack. You might check out the campus a little, maybe eat lunch or dinner with your parents, and then, suddenly, it will be time for them to go.

The first night in your room with a new roommate might be a little awkward, but that’s just because you don’t know each other yet. Try to get things unpacked and a little situated so that your comfortable with the new adjustment of making the move to live on your own.

Welcome Week

Whether or not your school calls it “Welcome Week,” the first week at most colleges is usually geared toward getting freshmen settled in and acquainted with each other and the campus. That means there are lots of activities planned so go out get involved and meet some new people.

Everyone’s a little nervous the first week, so it is the BEST time to make friends! You don’t have to go to every activity, but if something sounds interesting, check it out, and don’t be afraid to say hi.

First Day of Class

College classes are different than high school classes-sometimes very different. Rather than passing out worksheets the first day, college professors are more apt to give you a scary-looking syllabus, start lecture, or to say things like, “The person to the right of you and to the left of you will drop this class.” This statement is not true for the most part your whole class will still stay and finish it with you

Don’t be intimidated! Once you’ve been to a few classes, you’ll start to recognize faces and get used to the professor’s lecture style. It’s a change, but it’s not as bad as it seems!

Walk around the campus a bit so your familiar with where you’re going so your not the person who walks into late on your first day of class and the professor makes an example of you.

Find a Convenient Time to eat

Nothing is worse than the whole entire cafeteria being so packed that you can barely move try and stay away from 12 pm eating time because it is the most crowded time for the cafe and it will really stink because if you don’t know anyone in the café you will have to sit by yourself which can stink so find out when your friends will be eating lunch and try and find them before you head to the café by yourself.

Don’t Move Your Car until Friday

Most college campus have limited spaces so if you have a prime spot and don’t need to drive then don’t ,because once you leave your spot it will be taken and you would hate to have walk over a mile back to your dorm. On the weekends most of the spots will be open because alot of people will be heading home or going out to party.

College is the most exciting time of your life so go out and get involved and make some new friends.

1. Think positive and focus on gratitude

Research shows a healthy positive attitude helps build a healthier immune system and boosts overall health. Your body believes what you think, so focus on the positive. Being negative can lead you to being depressed and lower your immune system so you become sick much easily so stay positive and you will be healthy

2. Eat your vegetables

Shoot for five servings of vegetables a day — raw, steamed, or stir-fried. A diet high in vegetables is associated with a reduced risk of developing cancers of the lung, colon, breast, cervix, esophagus, stomach, bladder, pancreas and ovary. And many of the most powerful phytonutrients are the ones with the boldest colors — such as broccoli, cabbage, carrots, tomatoes, grapes and leafy greens.

3. Drink Water

Water does more than just quench your thirst and regulate your body's temperature; it also keeps the tissues in your body moist. You know how it feels when your eyes, nose, or mouth gets dry? Keeping your body hydrated helps it retain optimum levels of moisture in these sensitive areas, as well as in the blood, bones, and the brain. In addition, water helps protect the spinal cord, and it acts as a lubricant and cushion for your joints. Adding an a few extra glasses of water can keep your mind focus and your overall health much better.

4. Exercise daily

Did you know that daily exercise can reduce all of the signs of aging? This includes improving eyesight, normalizing blood pressure, improving lean muscle, lowering cholesterol and improving bone density. If you want to live well and live longer, you must exercise! Studies show that even a few minutes of exercise makes a difference so get off of your couch and do something! Crank the stereo and dance in your living room. Sign up for dancing lessons. Walk to the park with your kids or a neighbor you’d like to catch up with. Shoot some hoops or throw ball with your son. Get some of your girlfriends and sign up for Zumba. Play water volleyball. Ride a bike, Jump on a trampoline. Go for a hike.

5. Get a good night's sleep

If you have trouble sleeping, try relaxation techniques such as meditation and yoga. Or eat a small bedtime snack of foods shown to help shift the body and mind into sleep mode: whole grain cereal with milk, oatmeal, cherries or chamomile tea. Darken your room more and turn your clock away from you. Write down worries or stressful thoughts to get them out of your head and onto the page. This will help you put them into perspective so you can quit worrying about them. Just close your eyes and get that good rest that your body needs to stay rejuvenated and healthy.

Laugh and smile more, then add some of these tips into your life and you will experience a healthier and positive you and it will effect everyone around you.

Always Buy Generic

You can save tons of money buy not eating the brand names, I promise you after a while you cannot tell the difference. The only exception to this rule is Pop tarts they are the only brand name that the generics can’t duplicate.

Find the Best Place to Shop

Look around your area and try a couple places out and see which store has the best deals or coupons on your desire of purchase.

Ramen Noodles

Most everyone who has been in college has lived on Ramen for at least a point of time and why not their cheap and you can just pop them in the microwave and eat something that will fill you up. Ramen is a nice choice for a budget but not so much for the healthy side.

Snacks

Be Creative, no more expensive potato chips! You can buy some bananas, apples and oranges and eat those or you can create your own trail mix with some nuts and raisins and also you can buy a jar of peanut butter and utilize it with celery, apples and saltine crackers.

When in Store

Have your mind made out of how much you want to spend and for the time period you want this budget to last. Therefore, it’s always good when you can save money at the grocery store and still have some money to go out with your buddies later and have a little extra in the pocket.

Buy water it will keep you healthy and your mind focused and if mixed with the individual packet water flavors you will save a lot of money and be well hydrated.

Sports have been around forever and for every great sports moment we tend to try are best to capture on film. Sports films have been very successful because they combine the best of both worlds and through a way that most people can relate to.

Sports movies have the capability to change your life because they are so inspirational and give you the chance to relate to many of the characters and many are based on true events.

There are so many great movies made about sports, so here is my top 10 favorite sports movies.

10. Major League

Charlie Sheen plays Ricky Vaughn or “Wild Thing”, a pitcher on the Cleveland Indians, Vaughn starts out in jail before he gets to play for the Indians. A showgirl who goes by the name of Lynn Wells wants to move the team to a different area. So there has to be poor attendance during games so she puts together the worst team possible but in doing that creates a team who wins the division title.

During World War II, the major leaguers went off to fight, and that started a professional baseball league for women. Tom Hanks puts in an outstanding performance as he manages the Peaches it is a great movie and if you take anything from the movie “There’s no crying in Baseball”

This movie was based on possibly the greatest victory in sports history. The American hockey team faced off against the Soviet Union and played them with no professionals on the team facing a complete professional team and defeated the Soviets 4-3 at the 1980 winter Olympics. And quite possibly the best inspirational speech of all time.

Hoosiers has everything a sports movie needs and proves to be an exceptional movie that has stood the test of time, with the team no one expected to win, a new coach and his teachings and the shot from the quiet star Jimmy Chipwood.

All of the Rocky movies are outstanding. It is the ultimate underdog story. It's about a boxer from Philly getting a shot at the title. A great story to prove you can do anything you set your mind to and believe in yourself.

Sean Austin plays Rudy Ruettiger, who grew up in a poor Irish home and dreams of going to the University of Notre Dame. In 2000, the movie Remember the Titans was released. This movie is about a high school in Virginia, T.C. Williams football team and the way life was in the 1970s. The team chemistry is horrible because of racism, but ultimately the Titans grow stronger as a team and become like a family and start not seeing color while everyone in the community sees color, Every time I see this movie I get chills because it is an inspirational and classic movie that will be a lesson to all who watch.

So your power is out no biggie, wondering what you and your family can do with no power. The items listed below can help you find a lot of fun things to do. Appreciate the things you have and more importantly do something you probably wouldn’t have done if your power was still on, enjoy the list.

10. Read a book

Its cliché and classic but with no power you can sit back and indulge yourself in a great book that can make you even forget your power was off in the first place

9. Write

Write anything it doesn’t have to mean anything just let your creative juices flow and just maybe you might actually have something when you’re finished. Therefore it can be anything a poem, joke, blog, story and even a screenplay.

8. Clean your room

Need something to pass the time and make your parents proud that they didn’t have to ask a million times to do. It will be great for you because it will pass time, make your room look better and just maybe your parents will give you an “Abe” for your allowance that week.

7. Go outside

Its self-explanatory, most kids and young adults these days are all over the internet or playing video games without power you can’t do either so get off the couch and head up to the pool or go for a jog just do something to get your blood flowing.

6. Cut Local Lawns

Tight on cash, have a lawn mower? Go door to door in your neighborhood and ask others if you can cut their lawn for cheap, most of your neighbors will jump on the opportunity to not cut their own lawn because most hate cutting their own lawn and you can make some money in the process.

5. Ride a bike

Most people these days don’t really ride bikes like they used to, this is a great time for you to take a nice stroll around the neighborhood or a nature trail to get in a nice exercise.

4. Draw or Color

This is a great time if you’re an artist of any skill level; there are endless opportunities for you to do. For example, you can doodle and draw stick figures, grab a coloring book and some Crayola Crayons and color pictures in a coloring book, or work on a masterpiece you haven’t had the time to finish up until your power went out.

3. Sudoku

A great game to test your mind and mathematics out and also pass time while working the brain, Haven’t heard of Sudoku well the objective is to fill a 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3x3 sub grids that compose the grid contains all the number 1 to 9. And it’s a really fun game to play and will also help pass time.

2. Play a board game/Play Cards

Grab the family and some candles and get ready for a great time that many families aren’t doing much of anymore. Grab a deck of cards and play countless amounts of game or if you can’t find your deck of cards grab your families favorite board game such as Monopoly and have a great time getting in some good ole family bonding

Grab a flash light and think of one of the most frightening tales you can tell your pals or parents and settle in for a good time, and it will help make you a little tired and hopefully it doesn’t scare you so you can’t sleep though this brings back fond memories as a child and is my number one for no power
