I have a mid-century bedroom set and I'm curious to know who the manufacturer was.

On furniture, unless it's upholstered furniture, there isn't a label per say. Usually, a furniture manufacturer will stamp or burn their label on the underside of tables, on the backing of armoires and dressers, etc.

I have a 50 year old french provincial bedroom set that i want to sell. How much should i be asking? ?

You can find out easily. A 50 year old set is not an antique, so it isn't going to have a huge auction value. Look online at craigslist or similar sites, to see what similar sets are selling for. Pictures are often included in the ads and are very useful in making a comparison. Consider the prices people are asking for to be a starting point for negotiations.

IMPORTANT: If you are not the original purchaser of the furniture, be sure to check out the manufacturer of the set. Some are worth a SUBSTANTIAL amount more than others.

Queen size beds frames & bedding can usually be found fairly cheap, if not given away but for some reason the mattresses seem scarce.
What you may want to do is check the classified ads in your area. Some people actually give olds beds or matresses away, or you could check with your local Salvation Army.

Would A Queen Bed Fit In A Full Bed?

I currently have a Queen Mattress and Box of Springs. So I am planning on getting a new set of bedroom furniture sometime soon. So I have found a bed I really like, but it only comes in a Full. So... My question is that IF I got the bed, would I absolutely HAVE to get a new Mattress and Box of Spring? Beacause I am really avoiding getting new ones.

Really cute bed but no, a queen mattress will most likely be too big for it. You might ask the company for the dimensions though because if they allow a little extra room you might could squeeze it in. But good luck getting sheets on it at that point.

so i painted two walls burgundy, and the other two i left white. i wanted to get a duvet cover that is black and white like that victorian style kind of pattern. and for furnature im not really sure what to do.

It is called a BEDROOM set, not a bed set. It is intended to furnish a room.
Buy a mattress set with a plain bed frame, and the headboard will fit on it. [ make sure they are the same size ].

where can I find cheap bedroom sets?

I will be getting married in a little over 4 months, and my fiancee and I will be moving into a nicer apartment. Since we will be newlyweds we want to purchase new furniture and most importantly a bedroom set. My three sons are going to be sharing one bedroom. They are aged 6 1/2, 4 and 4. The bedroom that is going to be theirs is pretty large (14-4tf X 12ft) and has a bathroom and a large closet. Does anyone have any ideas on how to organize and arrange the three kids in one room? I would to give them some space away from each other. Any themes are appreciated as well. Thanks!

I like the idea of two sets of twin bunk beds, also. In particular, this is better than:

-three separate beds eating all your floor space.
-a double on bottom, twin on top bunk that would sleep all of them now but they can't stay this way for long...how long can two boys sleep together in a double bed?
-a loft-type system that can be dangerous if you don't execute it properly, and expensive if you buy a kit or have it done professionally.
-PLUS you get room for a buddy to sleep over.
-AND you have room for the twins to be at ground level and your older son to be up top like the big boy he is. As they grow up and top bunk is more inconvenient than cool, and anyone can be up there safely, they can rotate the sleeping arrangements.

As for storage spaces, I would say like with the beds, you need to go up where you can. Just don't put things so high that kids can't safely reach and do for themselves. As they get taller and more coordinated you will have more freedom to build up.

I don't know how you feel about individuality and where you draw the lines. I think each kid should definitely be allowed his own things, and personality, of course this is true. But you might consider some things community property to be stored together and shared among them...some of their toys and books and media, more expensive stuff like their TV and game systems and maybe some sports equipment...

One thing I would do if I had three young boys that close in age is extend this principle to socks and maybe even underwear too. I would gather up every one of their current socks and toss them out...and replace them with 50-60 or so pairs of IDENTICAL cheap white socks for them all to share. Keep dirty in the bathroom in a big roughtote or maybe even a kitchen style wastebasket with a swinging lid, labelled boys whites...wash them all together once a week in hot with bleach to keep them sanitary and bright...dump them unfolded into another container for storage of clean. This eliminates the drama of pairing up socks and sorting among people, and the waste if any get ruined or go missing. You might keep another (smaller) collection of identical black dress socks. Clean out and replace everything every year, maybe in the spring when you are spring cleaning and organizing, and when you aren't already saddled with back to school expenses or holiday gifts. This might be a hundred dollars or so expense every year. A small price to pay for such convenience all year. I think you can get at least another five years out of the collective sock arrangement. You might have to abandon the underwear clause a little sooner hahahh.

As for decor, I would go with a larger theme for the room, and each kids personal things...their dresser, their desk, their backpack, can be done in a particular element of that theme to both express themselves and distinguish their stuff. A bit like color coding but a little more descriptive I guess.

Animal themes abound...could do the room in the big theme and each kid decorates their stuff with an animal...you could do farm (duck, goat, horse) pets (dog, cat, hamster) dinosaurs (bronto, stego, pterydactyl) bugs (grasshopper, spider, bee) zoo (zebra, elephant, giraffe) etc. You could do sports...do the room to look like a stadium or locker room or sportscasters studio, or hang jerseys and display sports equipment. Each kid gets a separate team...or same sport, each kid rocks pro-college-their school, or each kid decorates with a different sport. You could do music...album covers or music notes, etc...and each kid gets a different singer or band or rapper, or each kid gets a different instrument. You could do games...decorate with vintage game boards, and get lamps and furniture that resemble game pieces. Each kid could be cards, dominoes, and dice. You could do a cartoon room...each kid decorates with a different cartoon. Or do a Disney room and each kid gets a different character. You could do bright colors and everyone gets a different shape...circles, squares, triangles.

Well, I got most of a king sized one into a two bedroom. I put the bed in first to see how much space it took. I then wanted nightstands on either side and was really starting to see that we were getting cramped. I then moved in the triple dresser, pulled out the drawers and discovered that if I sat on the bed, I could fully access the drawer contents. Conversely, when I brought in the highboy, no matter where I put it, the full drawers could not be pulled out for easy access to the contents mainly because they were deeper drawers. So it found a home out in the hallway. That being said, we did do a just in case measurement in the closet and discovered that if the triple dresser did not fit in the room itself, it could occupy space in the closet. (We might have had to raise the clothes bar for adequate clearance of the hanging garments, however.)

Q. What would be something awesome to do for that one person you live and love for? While he is with his friends, go to the bedroom and prepare music and change the light in the ceiling with a colored bulb, get your best lingerie ready. So that when the guys leave and he comes looking for you, play the music and dance slowly and remove clothing. And do not be surprised at the dark fire of desire in his eyes. It could scare you but keep dancing and let what happens happen. I have many other ideas. But these are some i have tried.

Coming from Cleveland, I'd suggest you look at the Vienna area. Vienna is very different than most of No. VA in that it is a distinct village within an urban setting. You will find 100 yr old victorians amidst brand new mcmansions. Quant small town feel with restaurants and shops all in walking distance.

Vienna's school district may be in flux as FFX Cty is drawing up new school boundaries as we speak. (I put a link below). FFX Cty schools are fantastic...but parents are in uproar over the changes since some AP schools are adversely affected.

Since you are in that dollar range...you frankly have so many choices, rather than most coming here from non-high cost of living areas. Ashburn surrounds the Dulles area and is a massive development that is about 12 years old and you will find everything there is sparkling new. Anything you buy here will require an automobile and feeding the coffers of the Dulles Toll Road. Otherwise you will be cranky in a car just going to the stores on jam packed local streets. Frankly, I'd rather die than live there....but I do know folks love the community as I have lots of friends there.

With foreclosures already adversely affecting that area....you might get lucky to purchase something comfortably in the 600K range that only a year ago was pushing 800K. Schools there are brand new too!

Again...before an agent takes you under your wing...make sure you get them to take you to the Town of Vienna....then go check out Ashburn and you will see what I'm talking about. Vienna is also more likely to maintain its real estate values over Ashburn since volume and new construction is still ongoing and can affect future value (something NOT to be overlooked).

Michael conned Jean out of her lottery winnings and the Vic's money in order to help pay for his wedding, so that Janine cannot make all the decisions.
He tell Jean he's running a youth project for young boxers to help keep them off the streets and that Jean will see a return in her investment.
Janine grows suspicious of Michael and Jean's friendship and is angered when Jean tells her that Michael has actually confided in her about his mother's suicide. She then goes to Michael to see whether she was telling the truth, but he lies that Jean has been lying to her. Jean then invests more money, though Michael tries to put her off as it is for The Queen Victoria's VAT bill. She soon regrets giving him the money and asks for it back, but he ignores her messages and phone calls and then pretends he does not know what she is talking about. Jean is then forced to tell Janine what Michael has done, however, Michael says that Jean is obsessed with him and Janine's unborn baby. He then attempts to turn everyone against Jean by saying she is obsessed with Roxy's daughter Amy, and setting up a bed containing Amy's things in Jean's bedroom. When Kat returns, she believes Jean over Michael and tries to help Jean find proof. After Jean pretends to flush Michael's St Christoper down the loo to get him to confess, he promises he will. He then phones the undertaker and organises a funeral for Stacey which further makes everyone think Jean is mad. Kat then believes that Jean is ill and goes to Michael to give him one more chance to confess. When she tells him that Jean will kill herself if she's sectioned he admits to Kat he took the money.

It really depends on where you live. Here in Wisconsin, the place to go is Furniture Deals & Steals, with one in Madison, one near La Crosse, and one in Baraboo (that I'm aware of). I've seen another place, advertised on TV, called Jennifer Convertibles, that seemed to have some sensible prices on couches...so maybe they'd have good prices on bedroom sets. You'll just have to look around your area and make some calls, and also on the internet too. There are lots of independent furniture stores to check out. And sometimes you can get a really good deal at some second-hand places, or even an estate auction. Then there's the random hotel auctions, which you can often get a really decent set of furniture at a good price. I'm not fooled by name brands though. My daughter used to work at Ashley Furniture, and she saw how it was really made. Cheap junk. And I bought an Englander king sized mattress 5 years ago, that came with a 15 year warranty, and it's in need of a new mattress (sagging) already. Make sure you and another person lays on the mattress for several minutes before buying it, to check for comfort and workmanship. Even if you do all the right things, there's still no guarantee you'll get something that will last longer than a few years, depending on how hard you are on your furniture. Hope you find what you're looking for. <*)))><

Hi. I'm doing a simple comparison between certain developed countries according to living costs. I have already found some stuff here in Answers and on the web, but I've learned personal experience is always the best teacher. I've never been to Canada and would really appreciate the following information (for any big city like Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton etc. - when answering please be so kind to state which city you are providing information for):
- monthly rent (2 bedroom apartment, in the city or in the suburbs)
- monthly pay (a high school teacher / a university professor / a translator / a bank employee-loan analyst)

in montreal there are english schools, french schools, elementary schools, highschools, cegeps, universities, private schools, public schools, I'd say its the best place to go to school in canada. the education system is really good. so the employment rate for a teacher would be good.

Oooh, what a nice bedroom set! For accent pieces, I usually try to mix it up a bit so it's not too 'matchy matchy'. Why limit yourself? A bedroom set isn't a bedroom set if it does not include the specific pieces you desire and want to spend your hard earned money on. These so called âbundled dealsâ that are often advertised may be forcing you to buy a nightstand you donât want or may not include the dresser and mirror you need. Even stores that sell the pieces separately will offer you discounts for buying multiple pieces of furniture. If they donât go on to the next store. Finally donât forget to ask about discount for paying in cash and not using credit card or financing.

My room has one burgandy colored wall and the rest of the 3 walls around the room are beige. The floor is made out of tan tiles.

Is it true that historically people bathed 1 time a year? I find this difficult to believe because the smell would be so awful that I believe society would grind to a halt. I mean especially for women and our monthly cycle. Does anyone have any actual proof of this? I think it has achieved mythic proportions and that it could be an urban legend.

Bathing has been more popular at some times than at others. the Romans for instance had public baths which were visited by both men and women. In medieval times, people certainly bathed, there are pictures in medieval art of people bathing, and some palaces and great houses had privat bathrooms, with some with indoor plumbing (some monasteries also had indoor plumbing). Steam baths were very popular during the medieval period, especially in London, where they became notorious as places where people could meet prostitutes (they were eventually closed down for this reason by order of Henry VIII).

Wealthy people continued to have private bathrooms in their homes, Queen elizabeth I had bathrooms in her palaces for instance, and would certainly have used them more frequently than once a year. however, most people did not have indoor plumbing, and having a bath would have been much harder work then than it is now. Bathing would entail filling a tub by hand, with buckets of water which would have to be filled froma well or a pump. the water would also have to be heated if you wanted a hot bath. And of course the tub would have to be emptied afterwards. Quite an undertaking.

Therefore, it is likely that the common people did not bathe very often, if at all. Likewise, although people did wash their clothes, they would wash them less frequently than we would now, as washing by hand is very hard work. They probably lacked our abonormal sensitivity to body odour. People would wash from a basin, probably not washing themselves all over at once.

In the early history of America, for instance, bathing does not seem to have been a very frequent occurence. In 1798, a Quaker lady called Elizabeth Drinker, aged sixty-five, bathed in a shower box that her husband set up in the backyard of their house. "I bore it better than I expected, not having been wett all over att once, for 28 years past" she wrote in her diary. The occasion 28 years earlier when she had bathed had been on a visit to a spa, which seem to have been quite popular.

In the early 19th century, people were washing despite adverse conditions. In 'America's Women' Gail Collins writes:

' Lucy Larcom, the mill girl turned author, remembered watching her sister in 1835 taking a full bath before going to work, "even though the water was chiefly broken ice...It required both nerve and will to do this at five o'clock on a zero morning in a room without a fire."

Cleanliness, like msot of the transformations of the pre-Civil War period, was mainly a phenomenon of the larger towns and cities. Willima Alcott, the health reformer, estimated in 1850 that a quarter of new england's population bathed their whole bodies less than once a year, and the numbers of unwashed Americans in the south and western states must have been staggering (the girls at the Euphradian Academy in Rockingham, North Carolina, had to get special permission from their paretns to take a full bath.) But the people setting the pace - the prosperous urban families - had decided that cleanliness wasi, if not next to godliness, at least a sign of gentility. By midcentury, every middle-class bedroom had a water pitcher and washbasin.

Still the concept of real head-to-toe bathing was slow to catch on. by 1860 there were only about 4,000 bathtubs in Boston, which had a population of 178,000. Washing generally didn't icnlude soap: people stood in tubs and rubbed themsleves with a wet sponge, followed by a brisk towelling. Some women boasted that they could take a complete bath in a carpeted room without spilling a drop. The idea of washing one's body was still so novel that people believed in waiting two hours after eating for even a sponge bath.'

Writing about the post-Civil War period, Gail Collins goes on:

'Wealthier families slowly acquired complete plumbing systems. Real bathtubs, a rarity before the Civil War, became more common, and in the 1870s the nation embarked on a long debate about the benefits of baths as opposed to standing on an oilcloth mat in front of a basin of water. Some experts derided the idea of bodily immersion in "zinc coffins" but once Americans had the chance to actually experience a hot bath, their cause was lost.'

Birkhall is a second 50,000 acre estate in Scotland near Balmoral that Prince Charles inherited from his grandmother.

Highgrove House is a 220 year old House with 9 principal bedrooms and 4 reception rooms (900 acres). It is another private home of Prince Charles.

My daughters share a room and a queen-sized bed. Right now it's pink and brown, hardwood floors with no rugs, the walls aren't painted, and it's very plain and what decor they do have is very much a little girls' room. It's ready for an update. I gave them the choice to do the room themselves, IE pick out all the paint, decor, bedding, or to let me design it and surprise them with a whole new room. They were both excited about the latter idea, so that's what I'll be doing. I figured the easiest way is to pick out bedding, then base paint and some decor around that, and then take them shopping and let them pick out the other accessories. They agreed on something with bright blue, green or teal, cool colors but still girly.
I've found a number of bedding sets that I think could work and they could grow into through their early teens at least, but would love some input from teenagers or moms who've done older girl rooms.

One is cute and adorable, but it is still rather juvenile. While it would do fine for now, it wouldn't age well for them.

Two is very lovely as it can reverse to change up the look. That's always nice. I still enjoy those and I'm 19. I have a reversible one that is quite cute but still will work until I'm several years older.

Three is also very adorable. This shouts "pre-teen" too me. I can see this one aging very well. This is something my younger cousin (she's 17 though) was looking into. Something with this style. It's cute and very fashionable.

Four is gorgeous. This one has the girly-er look to it, but it will age just fine. It's sophisticated enough, but still very fun! The colors are bright and cheery, but not too vibrant or wild, and it isn't something you would see in a little tot's room either.

I would probably go with Four. It adds a lot of character and will suit them as they age too. It still has the hint of girlishness in it, but it's also very mature looking too. And it's fun!

ALSO: I suggest you look at the Target website, too. There are a LOT of great bed-sets that are in the sorts you're looking for. Though I'll warn you, some of them look much better in person. The one I got is from there and it looks much better in person than it does online.

This time of year every store has sales on linens. Every department store (Kohls, Macys) or discount store (Tj Maxx, Marshalls, Ross) and every bedding store (Linens and Things, Bed bath and Beyond) sells individual sheets. Most better manufacturers make them to fit the thicker mattresses nowadays.

I'd rather sleep on old newspapers than buy that junk from Walmart. Unfortunately, most of K-Marts sheets are not much better any more.

Look for Ralph Lauren sheets on sale -- I have found them to be the most generously sized and the fabric is silky smooth cotton that holds up beautifully to washing.

I have a platform bed that is supposed to fit a queen or a king sized mattress but there is about a foot of open space and it looks really bad. Its a white bed but the open space looks lie a cork board but it is wood. Any ideas?

My kid had that problem, so he just stole a spare queensize mattress from another bedroom (our house had lots of furniture left behind) and put the full size mattress on it. It looked dumb at first until his mom covered it with a dark, fitted sheet. Not it looks kind of exotic, like it was meant to be that way.

Be careful not to get too carried away with the theme, as with things that say 'princess' literally, that's where it gets little girlish. Instead, concentrate on how a fairytale princess room would look. Purple is a color of royalty, think dark purple bedding in a lush fabric like velour or a very soft microfiber, satiny drapes in dark purple, a large bejeweled mirror, a collection of small decorative mirrors all grouped together closely, crystal lamps and a crystal chandelier in place of your ceiling light, lots of satiny and velour/microfiber throw pillows on your bed in pink, a lacey 'canopy' over your bed, (it doesn't need to be a canopy bed, you can hng it like a swag from your ceiling, draping down the sides), a pink or ivory slipper chair, feather boa draped over something, and lots of sparkle. If purple isn't your favorite color,a wine color or burgandy would look royal as well. As for your square boxes, think bejeweled, a tiara, large diamond-like necklace, or other sparkly accessories. And what princess doesn't have a bejeweled jewelry box in her princess room? Add a lush area rug for your tootsies and your set. Pier 1 is a great place to find a lot of these things. Or get to a craft store and bejewel what you already have. Sounds wonderful.

I decided I want my bedroom to be old Hollywood themed (think Marilyn Monroe). But I can't figure out what to do. I have a medium sized room in the shape of a square, yellow walls with white trimming, and antique cherrywood furniture. Any ideas on the colors, bed set, patterns, and decorations? Thanks!

Set my sights on this lovely Maine Coon cat, but does a big cat like that need a big house?

I live in an 800 sq ft 2 bedroom apartment, and I know this type of cat gets rather large. I do not plan to let any cat I own outdoors, would this be a bad choice for an indoor cat in a small apartment?

No, there is no need to have a big house. I own a Maine Coon and he is incredibly sweet and low maintenance. Not all Maine Coons become larger than other cats. All they need is a comfy place to sleep and lots of love. As long as there is some type of exercise available you'll be fine. All it will need is a play mouse or a string to chase. This should not be a problem though because Maine Coons are naturally playful and energetic.

hello how can i repair six deep scratches on top of drawer set which is new and untouched i had in extra bedroom even have tags still on it but i put stuffed animal on it it was mechanical penguin so it may have gotten hot and took either paint or finish off drawer i tried crayons to fill in it didnt work should i try to repair it or call a professional any suggestions thank you

Try the following. It will take some time and carefulness, but it should help. Materials needed: rubbing alcohol, colored woodfillers, craft sticks or plastic knives, light-tack painter's tape, rottenstone, clear tung oil, manicurist's emeryboards (rough, smooth, super-fine) clean, soft, lint-free rags.
1) Use alcohol on cotton swabs to completely remove all crayon. 2) Use strips of extremely light-tackiness painters tape to mask off both edges of the scratches. 3) get quality brand wood filler (Minwax, Elmers) in shades as close as possible to the color of the drawer. Buy 2 or 3 shades with the red, yellow, brown values of the wood as you will need to mix them together. Using wood craft sticks or plastic knives mix up tiny batches of wood filler, combining the colors until you get one that is as close as possible to the shade of your furniture. 4) With a rag wettened with alcohol, slightly dampen each scratch (helps wood filler adhere) and using the craft stick or plastic knife like a putty knife, press a small amount of wood filler into each scratch, slightly under-filling each. 5. Let dry per instructions on wood filler. 6. Second coat each scratch with wood filler (no alcohol this time) until filled scratch is even with adjoining surface. 7) Let cure to "sanding time" per instructions on wood filler. 8) Use a manicurist's emery boards, start with rough, then smooth, then super-fine, to sand smooth (go in direction of scratch, g-e-n-t-l-y) until filled scratch feels almost as smooth as the furniture. 9) Mix up a small amount (1/4 cup) of rottenstone (available in small boxes in furniture finishing section of big box stores) with clear tung oil (Formby's or Dansk) and rub in direction of scratches. 10) remove masking tape and polish entire drawer front with rottenstone/tung oil compound. Wipe off excess with soft dry cloth.

It's an attractive grouping, but don't let its look deceive you. Take someone with you that will recognize the quality of the fabrication of the pieces. You want to avoid it if it's nothing more than fiberboard.

It's good that you're looking at how much things should cost, especially before going to a "rent-to-own" place. Not only do they often charge excessively high prices, you also pay a high rental fee which eventually will let you own it. It's always been my experience to either only buy what I need (I don't need a end table), but retail stores "only" charge an interest fee without additional rent or lease fees. And buying a piece here and there with cash will save you even more. Or Goodwill/Salvation Army/etc. also has furniture, and then you can get a new mattress/box spring set.

Next choose your bedlinen and curtains early on. One of the most difficult things is once you've created the "perfect room" to then start finding matching bedclothes/curtains...grrrrr Obviously if you can sew these yourself then it becomes less of a problem but you still have to find the "right material". Nowadays, this is one of the first things I look for - and then I integrate my design around that because I've lost count of the number of times I've either not been able to find the right pre-made curtains or duvet or I've not been able to find the right material to make it myself.

In the past I've also photographed the room and then have done some computer manipulation of the image to check out if a "look" will work - this way you can see what it will look like with black walls/pink walls/black and white striped walls before you even pick up a paintbrush.

If it's a small room all black walls may be overwhelming - so think carefully about how you are introducing black. You may want to make a feature wall instead just for dramatic effect.
