href="http://breakingthespine.blogspot.com/">Breaking the Spine because I am ridiculously excited for the release of Soulless: The Manga Volume 1 which Amazon has informed me is shipping early of its’ March 1st release. Yey!!! The manga is covering the Parasol Protectorate series at a 1 volume to 1 book rate, and I’m both excited to see how this goes over and nervous at the same time. However any chance I have to get more of Lord Maccon and Alexia is good enough for me.

If you somehow haven’t heard of the delightful steampunk/paranormal/romance/mystery series before now, here’s the summary, and a link to my review of the currently most recent book in the series (but you should read them from the start!)

“Alexia Tarabotti is laboring under a great many social tribulations. First, she has no soul. Second, she’s a spinster whose father is both Italian and dead. Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette.

Where to go from there? From bad to worse apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire — and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate. With unexpected vampires appearing and expected vampires disappearing, everyone seems to believe Alexia responsible. Can she figure out what is actually happening to London’s high society? Or will her soulless ability to negate supernatural powers prove useful or just plain embarrassing? Finally, who is the real enemy, and do they have treacle tart?”

Summary from GoodReads (Archers of Avalon (#1)

Scarlet wakes up not knowing anyone, or anything but her name and age in the middle of the woods. Fast forward two years later when Scarlet is living in Avalon, Georgia under the care of her guardian. Nobody has reported Scarlet as missing, and not a trace of her past has been remembered except the one doodle she repeatedly scribbles on any surface she can find. Enter Gabriel Archer. Scarlet can’t put her finger on it, but something draws her to the mysterious Gabriel. Handsome as can be, Scarlet feels like she’s known Gabriel before, but he’s hiding something… if only Scarlet could figure out what.

Anew switches points of view between Scarlet, Gabriel, and Tristan, but it is done so rather well. While I was occasionally frustrated when the PoV switched, it was definitely necessary on the elusive Tristan. While Tristan outwardly projects as a completely closed-off and rude character, it is when we see things from his point of view that your heart melts. Desperate to do anything possible to help Scarlet, Tristan shuts himself off from everyone around him. It’s when comparing the ‘perfect’ Gabriel to the flawed Tristan that my heart really broke for him. Scarlet is a character who is determined to figure out why Gabriel & Tristan seem to familiar, even while she is terrified of how drawn she is to Tristan, despite being with Gabriel. Of all the characters in Anew, I definitely identified with Scarlet the most. Torn by what is ‘right’, and what feels right, Scarlet felt entirely human to me.

Anew itself is rather short, and suffers from trying to fit too much into too small of a place, and I could have easily read another 100 pages before feeling like Anew had properly told it’s story. As with many novels that plan from the start to have sequels these days, nothing is really ‘started’ or ‘finished’ and I was angry when I realized that some of the answers I’d been waiting all novel for were going to have to wait until at least book two to be answered. While this did leave my desperate for MORE, I was also frustrated. While I do recommend many, many people read this book, it is perhaps a bit of ‘word to the wise’ to wait until closer to the next books release before doing so.

href="http://www.goodreads.com/series/70662-darkest-london">Darkest London (#1)

Firelight is an excellent crossover between fantasy and romance, and definitely opens us up to a world that is likely to get much more interesting as the series progresses. In a version of England that is abound with everything from curses, to pyrokinesis to demons it is a different twist on the historical romance that many know and love. Firelight also suggests tales of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ at its’ most basic plotline.

Miranda is responsible for her family’s downfall. As the youngest of three to an impoverished businessman, Miranda is the latest of her father’s daughters to ‘sell off’ for the money she will bring with wedding. Archer views himself as a monster. Afraid of people’s reactions when they see his ‘monstrous’ side, Archer hides himself behind masks and clothing, never letting anyone close enough to see who he really is. Everything changes however when a chance meeting with Miranda leaves Archer intoxicated with her personality and beauty.

I enjoyed Firelight, as it dismisses most of the normal ‘worries’ in a romance for more magical ones. Miranda is a female in historical London who can fence, blend in to her surroundings, and set people on fire. In a bit of role reversal, we see Miranda chasing Archer more often than the other way around, as Archer is only concerned with Miranda’s safety. The love between the two characters, while a bit ‘instant’ for my tastes is clear and passionate.

Firelight is not all love and romance however, and there is evil abound as well. With someone committing crimes and doing their best to frame Archer for the crimes, Archer is determined to prevent Miranda from getting involved. But if anything can be said about Miranda, it’s that she never knows when to leave well enough alone…

/> Series: Everneath

Everneath is a loose reference to a few of the Hades & Underworld myths, including the story of Hades & Persephone and Orpheus with Eurydice. I’ve said before that I love almost any story that’s based off Greek Mythology, and Everneath was no exception to the rule. Nikki has spent 100 years in the Everneath with Cole, fleeing to the bliss that only Cole can offer and running from her pain. Cole is an immortal who lives off the emotions fed to him by sacrifices such as Nikki. When Nikki awakens from her 100 year slumber, she is different from others – she immediately chooses to return to the surface even though she can only do so for 6 months. Nikki is unique in that she retains a memory. It is Jack’s name, and Jack’s face that Nikki has clung to for her 100 years. Nikki struggles to spend her 6 months saying goodbye to the family and friends she loves before her time is up, while Cole is determined to make Nikki Queen of the Everneath. And Jack? Well, that’s the real mystery.

Everneath’s chapters alternate between the present and the past. In the past is spent filling in the gaps of just why Nikki gave up her life to the Everneath, and just what happened between her and Jack. The present reflects on Nikki struggling to regain the memories and emotions she has lost. For while it’s been 100 years for her, it’s been 6 months on the surface. Often enough as a reader, I found the present just as heartbreaking as the past – often times, more so as when Nikki disappeared, she did so without leaving a trace. Her friends and family have no idea where she has gone, and who’s lives somewhat halt with her gone. Nikki herself is a fascinating character, because as a reader you read as Nikki literally feels emotions for the ‘first time’ again. While at first I actually thought Nikki was selfish, as her story evolves and fills in, I was completely ‘on her side’.

It is really Jack though that made the story for me. Jack is a character that I expected to hate from the start – I knew he had to be responsible for Nikki giving up everything. The truth however, is never that simple. Jack is a character that is detailed well as the story progresses along, forcing you to continuously readjust your opinion of him. It is perhaps Jack that my heart really broke for throughout Everneath, and it becomes easy to see why Nikki refuses to forget Jack despite initially forgetting everything else about her life.

My one fault with Everneath, is that I wasn’t sold on the ‘evil’. Time in the present of the story is spent by Nikki counting down the days left until she is forced to return to the Everneath, and it is this ‘bad’ that I expected the story to rail against. When this didn’t prove to be entirely true, I was a little confused. However regardless of this, I am extremely interested in the next book of the series. Everneath creates an extremely interesting universe with main characters that are written extremely well.

But with only six months left to choose between marriage and the Sisterhood, she might not be able to keep her word . . . especially after she finds her mother’s diary, uncovering a secret that could spell her family’s destruction. href="http://www.goodreads.com/series/62690-the-cahill-witch-chronicles" rel="nofollow">The Cahill Witch Chronicles

Born Wicked is about three sisters, with the eldest, Cate telling the tale. Nearing her birthday, Cate must soon choose her future: Marriage to a man she may or may not have a choice in, or spending her life with the Sisterhood. Either choice means leaving her sisters, sisters that have not always made the smartest decisions about hiding the magic they have. In early New England, the hunt for witches has gone to an extreme, and The Brotherhood takes girls who are even suspicious of having magic to an asylum, are forced to hard labor, or in more extreme cases, kill them. The Brotherhood preaches that women should be meek and mild, and discourages them of having passions.

Cate has taken care of her sisters since their Mother’s death as best she can, however her Father is having a new Governess brought in. New people means greater risk of exposure, and Cate already has a hard enough time keeping her younger sisters in check. Now with new dangers coming at her from all sides and the discovery of a prophecy almost certainly about their family that puts them even more in danger, Cate is put to the test.

I enjoyed Born Wicked quite a bit, and I found the world intriguing. As someone who’d always been curious about the Salem Witch Trials, it’s interesting to see a twist on a world where this is taken to an extreme. Cate is an interesting character who does the best she can with the rotten hand she’s been dealt, and I felt for her continuously throughout the book. No decision she makes is easy, and she’s often left between choosing from bad to worse. That said, the romance in Born Wicked leaves something to be desired, and definitely screams ‘insta-love!’. I had a hard time really feeling the emotions Finn and Cate as they seem to happen without any real evolution. While Cate has known Finn since childhood, she never really paid attention to him in the past, nor him with her. The characters seem to go from ‘friends’ to ‘risking their lives for each other’ in mere days.

In regards to Cate’s sisters, I often wanted to throttle Maura, her next eldest sister. Headstrong and stuck in her ways, Maura listens to nothing Cate tries to tell her, and is continually putting not just herself, but her entire family at risk for completely selfish reasons. The youngest sibling, Tess is much more interesting, perhaps because we really see so little of her. Not being old enough to be involved in the social situations happening around Cate and Maura, Tess is often left to the background. A middle ground between Maura and Cate, Tess wants to learn how to use her magic but isn’t as foolish as her sister about it, and she is the character I’m much more interested in seeing in the future.

While I had some problems with conclusions being leapt to that had no forethought leading to them, I’m interested to see what comes next for the sisters. The prophecy has yet to really come into play, and like any book in a good series, leaves off at a point where I need to know what happens next. Despite some slow pacing in the beginning, Born Wicked picks up in the latter half and I’d recommend it to fantasy fans.

When her sister Victoria gets bit by her dog when she’s supposed to be gaining the Prince’s permission to marry her love, Kate is forced to step in and act the role to save her. Kate however, is not the beautiful socialite that the Lords and Ladies remember meeting at Victoria’s introduction into society. On the other side of the tale, we have Prince Gabriel who rules over the citizens ousted from his brother’s increasingly religious kingdom. Gabriel is desperate for the money he needs to repair the castle so he can be off on his own adventures, and despite having the perfect fiancée for the role, is drawn to Kate.

A Kiss at Midnight is a retelling of Cinderella, and while not the first to do this,
is perhaps one of the best renditions I’ve read of it in awhile. While other excellent versions of the tale exist (Cinder), A Kiss at Midnight is has the same feel as the Disney story we all grew up with while putting the story into an adult retelling. I’ve been a fan of Eloisa James for awhile, but this quickly moved up to place as my favorite romance read. Kate and Gabriel are a very compelling pairing – with both having their ups and downs, I cheered for them to get their ‘Happily Ever After’ even in the moments when I was proudest of them for making the tough decisions.

Despite the rampant historical inaccuracies and modernism (which Eloisa James never claims to not do), a Kiss at Midnight is a charming, funny and romantic read that will be often reread by myself again and again when I just need a good light pick-me-up. Filled with quirky characters in the form of a Godmother, a ‘Butler’ and her impending brother-in-law, A Kiss at Midnight is not to be missed. After all, who can resist a Prince named Gabriel Albrecht-Frederick William von Aschenberg of Warl-Marburg-Baalsfeld?

href="http://www.goodreads.com/series/67696-transcend-time-saga">Transcend Time Saga

Since the summary from GoodReads really cover the entire plot, I’m just going to skip right to the good stuff. I found Remembrance charming, and knowing that Michelle Madow was inspired to right the novel by Taylor Swift’s ‘Love Story’, a bit in love with it right away. Throughout the book you’ll find small references to other Taylor Swift songs as well, such as ‘Our Song’.

One fault that I had with Remembrance, is that I sometimes felt the plot was being stretched out further then it needed to be to leave room for a sequel. The plot of ‘I’m in love with my best friend’s boyfriend’ has been told often enough to be a cliché, and while cheering for Lizzie to get her man, I really just wanted them to get on with it already. While the primary trio felt very real, the secondary characters sometimes fell to the wayside, and I really got frustrated with everyone continually pushing Lizzie with Jeremy. Despite all this however, I found the ‘reincarnated’ story-line to be really interesting, and soaked up the story being told of our hero and heroine’s past.

/> Series: Sailor Moon (Volume Three)

Sailor Moon Volume 3 finishes up the equivalent of Season 1 of the Sailor Moon anime, and beginning the next arc of the story. In Volume 3 we see the senshi use the Moon Sword for the first time, and a much more tragic telling of the battle against Queen Beryl. As the inner senshi struggle to help Sailor Moon with the battle, Usagi fights to return Mamoru to normal and bring him back to her. As a fan who had mostly only seen the anime, it’s wonderful to see more of the bond between Usagi and Mamoru that is often glossed over. Sailor Moon never moves along slowly, and the final battle is no exception to the rule. NOTE: The second arc of the manga is one place where the anime starts to depart from the series, and does not contain the ‘Ail & Ann’ storyline. The next arc soon begins and we are introduced to Chibi-Usa, and the Black Moon Clan. Peace never lasts however, and things quickly begin to fall apart for the Sailor Senshi.

Fans of the the use of the Japanese names will be happy to know that this has followed through to the Black Moon clan, and we see ‘Demando’ instead of ‘Diamond’ and ‘Chibi-Usa’ rather than ‘Rini’.

I was extremely happy to see the gorgeous color pages at the beginning of the volume, as these are beautifully detailed and painted. In a bit of fan-girl squeeing, I was also happy to see the use of the image showing the inner senshi paired with the four generals as well for a chapter image and use of Mamoru’s actual abilities as Prince of the Earth

/> Series: Lunar Chronicles

Cinder is a cyborg. In a world where this is not entirely uncommon, Cinder is treated as sub-human, shunned by those around her. Ashamed of her mechanical parts, Cinder keeps her hands covered with gloves, her feet behind tables. True to the originally Cinderella story, Cinder is a mechanic to the public, and the only source of income to her uncaring and selfish step mother.

Cinder has a terrific world that we slowly see unfold. In this alternate reality a plague is spreading. Unknowing of the cause or the cure to this deadly disease, plague victims are quickly quarantined away from their families and loved ones. War is also eminent as the Lunar race has waited for just the right moment for Earth to be at its weakest to strike.

Cinder is an interesting twist on the typical Cinderella story. With worries beyond the normal ‘will I go to the ball?’ we get a much more complex character who is easy to identify with. I found myself cheering for her even when I was frustrated with the occasionally slow moving story. With large amounts of foreshadowing, Cinder could sometimes be frustrating as I just wanted the book to get on with it already. Despite this, the slow pace of Cinder and Kai’s relationship made the story feel much more realistic and believable.

I loved watching the relationship between Kai and Cinder unfold, because it is a much more reluctant and ashamed of who she is Cinder that is sought out by Kai. For Kai, Cinder is a breath of fresh air – untouched by court politics, Cinder is someone he can speak to without being judged, and for his self and not who everyone thinks he should be.

Beyond the ‘love story’ however, is a much more political story then we often see for the Young Adult audience, as the choices between doing what’s right for yourself and what you should do for your people becomes much blurrier. I am extremely eager to see the universe continue to expand.

id="more-1750">The answer that immediately came to my mind for this is perhaps the same for most people, obviously Harry Potter. This is less because Harry Potter is amazing (even though it is) and more because of the things the series did for my family. A friend purchased the first Harry Potter book for me just after Prisoner of Azkaban came out, and I got hooked. I began devouring the books as fast as I could, class or not. When Sorcerer’s Stone came out in theaters, it was the first time I’d seen a movie with my sister in ages, and so the family bonding began. Next to be sucked in was my Mom, then my Dad… then my brother-in-law and finally my husband. A good many debates have occurred during car rides over what did happen versus what should have and etc.

Other than that… there’s not a lot of books I think everyone should read because my family members and friends are so varied that I’m constantly thinking of books that are perfect for that one person. Mystery? Perfect for Dad. Oooh a humorous paranormal? Husband would like that…

Anybody else have fond memories over the book they force on everyone when ever possible?

And don’t forget, I’m giving away a copy of Healer

I should probably start out by saying that I LOVE Maria V. Snyder – she can rarely do wrong in my eyes. If you were a fan of her Study series, you are practically guaranteed to love Healer as well, as it has the same feel of adventure and danger that Study did.

Avry has the ability to heal the sick. Once, her kind was respected and held in high esteem by the people, and then a plague began to spread. When the Healer’s couldn’t stop it, the people began to blame them for causing that very disease to start. The result? Hunting Healers down and having them killed for treason. Even knowing this, Avry continues to heal the sick as she travels from place to place with the limited knowledge she learned as an apprentice. While Avry awaits her death with a kind of tolerance born from accepting the fate handed to her, Kerrick has other ideas. Kerrick and his group have tried to track down a healer for awhile, for the need her ability to save their Prince. A prince that Avry harbors no love for, and if anything would rather have dead.

Touch of Power is not a sweet fluffy book. Avry takes the pain of others into herself to be healed, and there is a lot of indecision on her part about what to do. It is because of Kerrick that she is alive, at what cost? Kerrick wants Avry to heal his Prince of the plague, but healing their Prince will almost certainly kill her. Avry is not immediately coddled and protected, and her to actually prove that she has earned the trust of the group, which is something that I can appreciate. While the world in Touch of Power can be seen as shallow, fans of Maria V. Snyder can vouch for the fact that both characters and world continue to flesh out as a series progresses. Avry herself is a strong and independent character who has learned that just because you save someone’s child does not mean they aren’t going to thank you for it. Indeed, the villain in the series was one I appreciated as well, for sometimes doing the wrong thing for the right reasons. The world is complex with what was formerly 15 kingdoms having dissolved into three, and many many kinds of magicians filling up the world. Touch of Power is a different kind of ‘post-apocalyptic’ book as the series does not dwell on the falling of the monarchs as much as others perhaps would. The average person is more concerned with trying to reclaim their every day life then the overarching political problems.

The romance in Touch of Power is a different one from much of the YA world, as the characters do not immediately feel drawn to nor instantly love each other. In fact, they have a well deserved hatred for one another that slowly dissolves throughout the book. It was refreshing to see a romance that felt earned and not handed to the characters.

Nineteen-year-old Jackson Meyer is a normal guy… he’s in college, has a girlfriend… and he can travel back through time. In his panic, Jackson jumps back two years to 2007, but this is not like his previous time jumps. Now he’s stuck in 2007 and can’t get back to the future.

Desperate to somehow return to 2009 to save Holly but unable to return to his rightful year, Jackson settles into 2007 and learns what he can about his abilities.

But it’s not long before the people who shot Holly in 2009 come looking for Jackson in the past, and these “Enemies of Time” will stop at nothing to recruit this powerful young time-traveler. Recruit… or kill him.

Piecing together the clues about his father, the Enemies of Time, and himself, Jackson must decide how far he’s willing to go to save Holly… and possibly the entire world.

Summary from GoodReads (<a
