			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>You can now have your SAManage Service Desk send customer satisfaction surveys to your users and request feedback on the service they received.</p>
<h2>How does it work?</h2>
<p>Customer satisfaction surveys are sent via email to your users upon completing the service request. When the service request is resolved, an email is sent to your user asking if they were satisfied with the service received.  They are given the  option to click either Yes or No. When the response is provided, the answer is captured with the related incident.</p>
<p>To enable customer satisfaction surveys, go to <a href="https://app.samanage.com/setup/helpdesk">setup -&gt; service desk</a> and enable the survey option. You can control how quickly the survey emails are sent to your users.</p>
<h2><span>Viewing survey results</span></h2>
<p><span>Service Desk administrators can view survey results at the single incident level (where the incident status is located):</span></p>

<p>Upon activating the new feature, two new widgets are available on the dashboard.  The first shows Today&#8217;s activity, while with the second widget you can choose a different period (for example, the last year or this month), giving you better visibility into how your service desk is performing:</p>

<p>Now you can easily manage your Other Asset types from within the Other Asset section. Note the new setup option on the page:</p>

<h3><strong>Better control Other Asset serial numbers</strong></h3>
<p>Now you can differentiate Other Asset items by their Serial Number field. Choosing to do so means that when you create a new Other Asset item, SAManage will check whether its serial number value already exists in the system, and prevent you from saving this item if such a value exists. This validation will only be done if a value is provided in the Serial Number field.<br />

<h3><strong>SAManage search in your browser</strong></h3>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Introducing the upgraded Contract and Software License management section with many new features to help you easily manage your IT contracts! Here are just some of the new features we introduce with this upgrade, starting with the improved usability:</p>

<p><strong>Related contract </strong>- many times you&#8217;d like to manage relationships between contracts such as parent/child or master contract and its entitlements (or other type of relationships between your contracts). Now you can capture these relationships with the Related Contract section.</p>
<p><strong>Related users &#8211; </strong>having a hard time keeping track of who approved or procured every contract you own? not a problem! now you can capture these users with each contract so you can easily see who &#8220;owns&#8221; each contract.</p>

<p>Contracts now has the auto-tagging capabilities of SAManage (and you can always add your own tags too) and the tasks component, which means you can create tasks that are related to a specific contract and have them assigned to individuals.</p>
<p><strong>Renewal Reminder </strong>- as the name implies, this option will send you an email reminding you that your contract is due for renewal. You can send it to all admins on the account or a specific user.</p>
<p><strong>Contract lifecycle </strong>- contracts can now how multiple stages within the lifecycle &#8211; from draft to in-review, active, or expired, you can now keep track of the status of each contract, and even use SAManage to store your contracts that are still being negotiated before they are approved.</p>
<p><strong>Software license types </strong>- you can now capture many different software license types, from &#8220;per CPU&#8221; to OEM or &#8220;Open Source&#8221; licenses &#8211; track over 23 different license types!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Now when you navigate to an <a href="http://www.samanage.com/blog/2011/02/qr-codes-and-it-asset-management/">asset in SAManage you can generate a QR or BAR code</a> for that asset.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-4575" title="bar-codes-in-samanage" src="http://www.samanage.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/bar-codes-in-samanage.png" alt="" width="537" height="146" /></p>
<p>QR codes contains asset information and the URL of the asset in SAManage. To give it a run, generate a QR code for an asset, click the print icon and print the QR code. Than scan it with your favorite QR scanning application and you can see the URL. Clicking on the URL will open your browser, log you into SAManage and display the asset details.</p>
<p>BAR codes works slightly different. Since there are so many different formats, you can select the different format to generate. BAR codes are based on the asset ID (field above) &#8211; change it and the BAR code will regenerate &#8211; makes it easy to better control your codes.</p>
<p>This is the first step in our BAR/QR code project &#8211; the next steps are coming up. Let us know what you think!</p>

<p>Your end users can use the self-service portal to submit new incidents or service requests, which are the items available for order in the IT service catalog. They can also check the status of their requests, collaborate with IT staff on open tickets, and search the <a href="http://www.samanage.com/solutions/solutions-knowledgebase.html"title="Knowledge base" >knowledge base</a> for potential solutions.</p>
<p>You also now have the ability to further customize the self-service portal, by changing any of the messages as well as the look and feel. Be sure to check out the new setup options in your account.</p>
<p><strong>Publish the Self-Service Portal to Your Users</strong></p>
<p>You can roll out the self-service portal to your users by publishing your unique portal login page, available at <strong>http://accountname.samanage.com</strong>. You can make it even easier for your users by adding a DNS record, to forward visitors from your domain (for example <strong>http://support.acme.com </strong>-&gt; <strong>http://accountname.samanage.com</strong>) to your unique portal login page.</p>
<p>There are two ways to enable user access to the self-service portal.  You can pre-create users and grant them  the “portal role”.  Or, you have an option to allow users to create new accounts themselves through your portal login page. For customers using our Google Apps integration, portal entry points can be published directly from the Google Apps console, and be made available to your end-users with just a click of a button.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Over the last few months we&#8217;ve been busy working on the new IT Service Catalog feature to further expand our SaaS <a href="http://www.samanage.com/solutions/it-service-management.html"title="IT Service Management" >IT Service Management</a> offering. IT Service Catalog provides an IT organization with a structured way to &#8220;publish&#8221; a list of services available to their users, which can than request these services through the self-service portal. Its a great way to streamline and standardize service delivery processes and make it easier to manage and measure an IT service organization.</p>
<p>The new IT service catalog feature includes the <strong>Service Catalog Editor</strong> used by IT service managers to define, edit and organize the service catalog items (these are the IT services available to their users) as well as the fulfillment process to deliver these services. A process can be as simple as requesting an approval from a manager and checking availability of an item in stock, or more complex processes that involved multiple approval and fulfillment steps. The other part of the new IT service catalog is the Self Service Portal, where the organization&#8217;s users go to request new services from the catalog, and view their existing service requests.</p>
<p>Here is a quick preview of what we&#8217;ve been working on:</p>
<h3>New Service Catalog Editor</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.samanage.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Edit-Service-Item.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3667" title="Edit-Service-Item" src="http://www.samanage.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Edit-Service-Item.jpg" alt="" width="965" height="773" /></a><br />
The service catalog editor is used by IT service managers to define the services available by the IT service organization. Each service item includes descriptive information about the service, variables that can be used to capture additional information about the requested service, and the process definition for delivering the requested service. A service delivery process can have multiple steps that can be executed together or conditional on other events as well as approval tasks to request an approval to deliver the service.</p>
<h3>New service request via the self-service portal</h3>

Users login to the self-service portal and browse or search the Service Catalog for items they wish to order.</p>
<h3>Requesting a new IT service:</h3>

Users can order new IT services by selecting the item from the catalog, customizing any options for that item, and submitting the new request. When a new request is submitted, it appears in the Service Desk so service technicians can track the status of each request and the delivery process. Users can login to the self-service portal to view status of their requests and the estimated delivery schedule.</p>
<p>We are finishing up with the closed beta program and expect to launch the new IT Service Catalog feature within a couple of weeks. Stay tuned!</p>

<p>Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) is a standard for authentication, and for logging users into an application based on their session in another context. SAML provides significant advantages over authenticating using a username/password.  There is no need to remember or type in credentials, no need to manage multiple credentials,  no weak passwords or security standards, etc.</p>
<p>Most enterprises already have an identity management provider in place, and know the identity of users because they are logged into their Active Directory domain or Intranet. Leveraging this existing infrastructure and using it to authenticate and log users into other Web-based applications and SaaS solutions is one of the more elegant ways of doing this through SAML.</p>
<h3><strong>How SAML SSO Works</strong></h3>
<p>SAML single sign-on works by authenticating the user against the company&#8217;s identity provider, and transferring the user&#8217;s identity from one place (the identity provider) to another (the service provider). This is done through redirections and an exchange of digitally signed XML documents. The following takes place when the user tries to login to an SAML-enabled SAManage account:</p>
<ol>
<li>User clicks on the link to SAManage on the corporate Intranet, or using a bookmark.</li>
<li>SAManage identifies the user&#8217;s origin (either through login URL, application sub-domain, or user&#8217;s IP address) and redirects the user back to the identity provider, asking for authentication.</li>
<li>The user either already has an active session with the identity provider, or establishes a new session by logging into the identity provider.</li>
<li>The identity provider authenticates the user and creates an XML-document containing the user&#8217;s username or email-address, signs it using the X.509 certificate, and posts this information back to SAManage.</li>
<li>SAManage retrieves the XML response and validates it using the X.509 certificate.</li>
<li>Once validated, the user is logged into his SAManage account.</li>
</ol>
<h3>Configuring SAManage for SAML</h3>

<p>The following information needs to be configured in your SAManage account:</p>
<p><strong>Identity Provider URL &#8211; </strong>The URL at which the SAML assertion should be received. SAManage will redirect the user to this URL for authentication. In this example we use an online SAML identity provider from OneLogin. Another example could be &#8220;http://identity-provider:3000&#8243; to authenticate with an on-premise identity provider.</p>
<p><strong>Login URL </strong>- The URL at which your users login to SAManage. This is the entry point for your users when they try to login to their SAManage account. All requests to this page will tell SAManage that the user is trying to authenticate with SAML, resulting with a redirection to the Identity Provider URL.</p>
<p><strong>Logout URL (Optional) </strong>- The URL at which your users are redirected following a logout from their SAManage account. This can be a local page on the company&#8217;s Intranet (i.e. the home page).</p>
<p><strong>Error URL (Optional) </strong>- The URL at which your users are redirected if they could not be authenticated. This can be a local page displaying an error message or further instructions.</p>
<p><strong>X.509 Certificate &#8211; </strong>This is your X.509 certificate fingerprint provided from the identity provider. SAManage will use the certificate to validate the response from your identity provider.</p>
<p><strong>Create Users if They Do Not Exist &#8211; </strong>This option instructs SAManage to automatically create a user-ID for that user if such does not yet exist. This is a convenient way to enable your users to use SAManage without having to pre-create accounts for them in the system.</p>
<h3>Need an Online SAML Provider?</h3>
<p>SAML is very powerful and flexible, but the specification can be quite a handful. For companies that do not yet have an on-premise identity provider, <a href="https://app.onelogin.com/affiliate/samanage">OneLogin</a> provides an online, SaaS-based alternative. With OneLogin, users can enable enterprise-grade SSO over the cloud, allowing all end-users to connect with all SaaS services.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>One of the top requests we&#8217;ve been receiving from our community over the last couple of months has been to add new capabilities into our Other Assets section. The Other Assets area is where our customers manage all their non-computer IT assets, such as communication and network equipment, mobile devices, projectors, and scanners and printers, to name a few.</p>
<p>With the new capabilities users can now:</p>
<ol>
<li>Track <strong>asset purchase information</strong>, including dates, cost, reseller, etc.</li>
<li>Associate an <strong>asset with a contract</strong> (maintenance or master lease) they belong to</li>
<li>Capture <strong>lifecycle events and dates</strong> relating to that asset. For example, when the asset was sent to service and when it is expected back, or when the asset was loaned to a user and is expected to be returned.</li>
<li>Create <strong>tasks </strong>and reminders for that asset. For example, remind the user to service the asset, upgrade it, or schedule maintenance work on it.</li>
<li>Add tags to identify assets and easily locate them.</li>
<li>Add attachments to capture asset-related documents, purchase records, service slips, and more.</li>
</ol>
<h3>Effectively Managing Your Other IT Assets</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.samanage.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Other-Assets.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-3456" title="Other-Assets" src="http://www.samanage.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Other-Assets-874x1024.jpg" alt="Other-Assets" width="874" height="1024" /></a></p>
<p>The new form allows you to capture all the asset information in one place.</p>
<p>On the right side of the screen, users can capture the asset&#8217;s purchase information, attach assets to contracts (maintenance or lease) from the Contracts repository, and assign associated tasks to themselves or other users to effectively manage the asset throughout its lifecycle.</p>
<h3>Managing Asset Lifecycle Information</h3>

<p>With the new asset lifecycle capability, users can now track significant dates throughout the lifecycle of the asset, including when the asset was assigned to a user, site, or department; when the asset was sent to a service and returned; or when it was loaned to a user, site, or department.  Use it to enhance  asset utilization and better control where your assets are physically located at each and every stage of their lifecycle.</p>

You can view how your users are logging into SAManage, whether done through the application or the API, how they authenticated (for example, SAManage, Google Apps SSO or SAML), the operating system and browser they used to login.</p>
<p>Administrators can monitor the login attempts for their organization and enabled end user portals, as well as the type of login. To view the login history in your organization, click on the <a href="https://app.samanage.com/login_histories">setup -&gt; login history</a>.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Google Apps users now have an even easier way to roll out SAManage across their company. With the recent addition of our integration with Google Apps, many users have asked us to enable the auto-creation of users in their support portal.  And today, we&#8217;re delivering just that.</p>
<p>When you deploy SAManage in your Google Apps control panel, SAManage immediately becomes available in the Google Apps navigation bar.  Your users can then use that to login to the new service portal, to submit new service requests or check on the status of existing ones.</p>

<p><strong>Activating SAManage for Google Apps</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>Visit the <a href="http://www.google.com/enterprise/marketplace/viewListing?productListingId=227 17844859214392631254">SAManage Service Desk Listing at the Google Apps Marketplace</a></li>
<li>Add SAManage to your Google Apps domain control panel</li>
<li>Activate SAManage from the Google Apps control panel, and create your new SAManage account</li>
<li>Login to SAManage and enable <a href="https://app.samanage.com/sso_setup">auto-create users from Google Apps</a></li>
</ol>
<p>When your users click on the Google Apps navigation panel and select &#8220;<strong>Help Desk  - SAManage</strong>&#8220;, they will be redirected to SAManage.</p>
<p>SAManage will authenticate the user with Google Apps. Once authenticated, the user can proceed and login to his SAManage account. If the <strong>user does not have a SAManage user-id, </strong>a new user-id will be created on the fly, and the user will have immediate access to the end-user portal.  No additional logins or user-ids to remember!</p>
<p>Users can utilize the end-user portal to submit new support requests or check on the status of their existing requests. By default, users are assigned a &#8220;Portal Role&#8221;, which gives them access only to the end-user portal.  But, you can later grant them access to other areas of the system by visiting the <a rel="nofollow"  href="https://app.samanage.com/users">users&#8217; setup section in SAManage</a>.</p>
<h3>Activating Single Sign-On with Google Apps</h3>
<p>To activate Single Sign-On in your SAManage account, administrators should navigate to the <a rel="nofollow"  href="https://app.samanage.com/sso_setup">setup option for Single Sign-On</a>, and activate it for the account. You will have to enter your Google Apps domain name in the box below, and click &#8220;Update&#8221; to save your settings. This time, we are focusing on compression &#8211;  making Web elements much smaller, to accelerate response time and rendering of each page.  Here are some details about how we addressed the issues:</p>
<p><strong>Minification of CSS and Javascripts</strong> &#8211; <a rel="nofollow"  href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minification_(programming)">Minification</a> is the process of eliminating unnecessary characters (especially spaces and comments) from the source code, to reduce  size without changing the functionality. Minifying these elements helps decrease their size, which results in smaller elements to download from the server.</p>
<p><strong>Compression of Static Elements</strong>- We moved to using max compression on static elements, and configured our Web servers to serve the compressed version of the static asset, instead of compressing it &#8220;on the fly&#8221;. This provided two primary benefits: (1) our Web servers no longer spend CPU cycles dynamically compressing these elements, and can serve the compressed asset faster (2) our Web servers were configured with gzip level 2 compression (a lower compression level to save CPU cycles). By moving to max compression (level 9) and serving compressed assets, we were able to reduce the weight of these elements by around 30%!</p>
<p><strong>Embedding Images into CSS </strong>- We moved many of the remaining <a href="http://www.samanage.com/blog/2010/06/new-service-performance-enhancements-part-1-images/">static images that were not already in sprites</a> to the CSS itself, so now these images are downloaded together with the CSS files. This results in less queries to the server to fetch these images independently. Less queries to the server means lower latency and faster page load.</p>
<p><strong>Bundling CSS and JS</strong>- We bundled some of the CSS and Javascripts together, based on the SAManage module used (inventory, service desk, dashboard, etc.) to optimize loading of these static assets when you actually need them, instead of preloading them in advance. The result is smaller static elements that are downloaded with each module you are accessing in SAManage.</p>
<p>The results are staggering. On average, we <strong>reduced server requests by 30% and page weight by 45%</strong>. Here are a few examples for how fast these modules now perform:</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We usually don&#8217;t announce performance and &#8220;behind the scenes&#8221; enhancements, but this one is a bit different. We were blown away by the results of the recent upgrade/performance tuning to the SAManage service, which provided substantial benefits to our users &#8211; <strong>improvements of 40%-45% in page load time. </strong></p>
<p>Here are some details on the new performance changes:</p>
<h3>Smushing Images</h3>
<p>Smushing images is fun. We sent all our images over to Yahoo&#8217;s excellent <a rel="nofollow"  href="http://www.smushit.com/ysmush.it/">Smush.it</a> tool, which uses optimizations to remove unnecessary bytes, without impacting image quality. By shaving just a few bytes from each image, we were able to save about 60K in total (that&#8217;s 60K less for you to download). Off to a good start!</p>
<h3>Moving Images to Sprites</h3>
<p>Next, we combined the smushed images into sprites. Combining the images used in the application into a larger image sprite helps reduce the number of images retrieved from the server with each page, as well as the number of server requests. And, reducing the number of server requests is a key part of optimization, as each request requires multiple steps (DNS lookup, get, cookie, render, and latency are all involved).</p>
<p>Now, when a user requests a page in SAManage, one or more sprites are downloaded, and they include most of the images required by that page (some static images are still downloaded directly outside of a sprite). The result is an approximate 40% reduction of the number of server requests.</p>
<h3>Adding Static Asset Hosts</h3>
<p>Static assets (images, CSS, and JavaScripts) are now rendered from different hosts configured to serve static assets. This addresses limitations in some old browsers that prevent the browser from simultaneously downloading assets from the same domain when requesting the HTML page. With the addition of (four) static asset hosts, your web browser can now download static assets from four simultaneous connections, resulting in faster retrieval of these assets.</p>
<p>We are excited to roll out these enhancements, and to empower our users with greater productivity gains! We have another set of performance optimizations underway, so stay tuned. We believe this Single-Sign-On integration will allow businesses use Google Apps and SAManage <a href="http://www.samanage.com/products.html"title="IT Management service" >IT Management service</a> seamlessly.</p>
<p>When you try to login to SAManage, you&#8217;ll notice a new &#8216;<strong>Login using Google Apps account</strong>&#8216; option in the login box. This option is now available with all SAManage accounts. If you are a Google Apps user, you can choose this option to login to SAManage.</p>

<h3>Activating Single-Sign-On</h3>
<p>To activate Single-Sign-On in your SAManage account, administrators should navigate to the <a href="https://app.samanage.com/sso_setup">setup option for Single Sign On</a> and activate the Single-Sign-On for the account. You will have to enter your Google Apps domain name in the box below and click update to save your settings. <p>To add a new task, click on the tasks section on the right side of your service desk screen. Tasks can be assigned to individuals on your team, and have a designated due date.  When they are resolved, a strike-through will appear on them. When tasks are created, they are automatically related to the service desk entity they were created with.</p>
