South African (SA) Tourism has officially appointed Sydney-based marketing specialist Gate 7 to spearhead its public relations and communications strategy across Australia and New Zealand.

The agency will work alongside SA Tourism’s local team to boost awareness and drive long-haul visitation. This strategic move, according to Travel Weekly, aims to convert mounting interest into definitive bookings by highlighting our wildlife, culture, and ease of access.

Why is Gate 7 targeting these specific regions?

The campaign naturally taps into regions where South African expats already thrive.

According to recent data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, approximately 214,790 South Africans currently live in Australia. With the impending deadline for New Zealand open work visas, cross-border movements in these Southern Hemisphere regions remain a highly relevant topic.

Recent route expansions also make travelling home easier than ever. Qantas launched a direct service between Johannesburg and Perth in 2025, cutting travel time to an impressive 9 hours and 55 minutes. Gate 7’s remit will heavily spotlight these direct flights from Sydney and Perth, alongside one-stop connections across the region. Furthermore, Johannesburg will be positioned as a destination in its own right, showcasing its growing art, history, and food offerings.

Gcobani Mancotywa, SA Tourism’s general manager for the region, explained that authentic storytelling is at the heart of their approach to attract these travellers.

Gate 7 founder and managing director Jo Palmer noted that South Africa offers “depth, diversity and exceptional value” for returning citizens and first-time holidaymakers alike.

How are the travel numbers looking?

The agency appointment follows exceptionally strong inbound performance over the last year.

In 2025, arrivals from these key markets surged, proving that the global appetite for South African safaris and coastal escapes remains high. While the latest Statistics South Africa data from February 2026 shows a slight year-on-year dip for the month, overall tourism growth and repeat visitation remain the primary objective.

World Haemophilia Week shines a light on a condition affecting millions globally. Here's what you should know about living with haemophilia.

Haemophilia is a medical condition that affects how blood clots, and it leads to prolonged bleeding after injury or surgery.

This week is Haemophilia Week, with the focus on improving awareness.

More than one million people globally live with bleeding disorders, according to the World Federation of Haemophilia. Many cases remain undiagnosed, particularly in lower-resource settings, so education is critical for early intervention and better outcomes.

WHAT IS HAEMOPHILIA AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

Haemophilia is an inherited bleeding disorder caused by a deficiency in clotting factors. These proteins help blood form clots, so without them, bleeding continues longer than normal. The condition is usually inherited and linked to the X chromosome.

It mainly affects males, but females can be carriers and may show symptoms. Haemophilia A is the most common type and affects about 1 in 5 000 male births, while haemophilia B is less common. The condition occurs across all populations, including in Southern Africa.

Severity differs between individuals. Mild haemophilia may only cause bleeding after surgery or injury, but moderate cases bleed after minor trauma. Severe haemophilia can lead to spontaneous bleeding, especially in joints and muscles.

Repeated joint bleeds can cause long-term damage if not treated.

COMMON MYTHS THAT STILL PERSIST

The general public often misunderstands haemophilia, and misinformation can delay proper care. One common myth is that people bleed faster, but they actually bleed for longer because clotting is impaired.

Another misconception is that small cuts are life-threatening. Most minor cuts can be treated with basic first aid, but internal bleeding remains a serious risk.

Symptoms such as joint swelling, pain, or reduced movement require attention.

Some believe people with haemophilia should avoid exercise, but low-impact activities such as swimming help maintain joint health. High-contact sports require caution, but physical activity can actually contribute to their well-being.

Haemophilia is not contagious, and it affects individuals throughout their lives, not only during childhood.

LIVING WITH HAEMOPHILIA IN DAILY LIFE

Haemophilia management has improved significantly, and many people live full, active lives.

The main treatment is clotting factor replacement therapy, which replaces the missing proteins in the blood. A person can take that on demand or as preventive treatment.

Many patients administer treatment at home, which reduces hospital visits and improves consistency.

Daily management includes maintaining a healthy weight, because excess weight increases stress on joints.

Patients should avoid medications that increase bleeding risk and to attend regular medical check-ups.

Dental care is also important, as gum disease can lead to bleeding complications.

The condition also affects social and emotional well-being. Children may feel excluded from certain activities, while adults may face challenges related to employment and medical costs.

Support groups and education programmes play an important role in improving the quality of life.

New treatments are under development, including longer-lasting clotting factors and gene therapy. These advances may simplify care in the future, but early diagnosis and consistent management remain the most effective approach today.

Wordle strategies make the difference between guessing and solving your puzzle with intent.

Each day presents the same challenge, but you shouldn’t repeat the same habits and expect new results. Success in Wordle depends on how you think, not just what you know.

Across South Africa and beyond, players open the grid with different approaches. Some rely on instinct, while others build routines that develop over time. And because there are only six chances, every move carries weight. A single, clever decision can shift the entire outcome.

This article explores smarter Wordle strategies that go beyond the basics. You will learn how to refine your guesses, read patterns faster, and adapt when the puzzle resists you.

WITH THE RIGHT STRATEGY, ‘WORDLE’ BECOMES LESS ABOUT LUCK AND MORE ABOUT CONTROL.

I have already suggested that, as a Wordle player, you can improve your chances by starting with vowel-heavy words like ADIEU, AUDIO, or STARE to eliminate common letters.

Further, you should use distinct letters in your first two guesses to maximise feedback. Focus on common letters, that is, letters often used in English, like E, T, A, I, O, N, S, H, and R, and avoid letters like Q, V, or Z too early in your guesses.

SEVEN TOP ‘WORDLE’ STRATEGIES

We can now start to summarise some favourite strategies to complete Wordle in the fewest guesses:

Strategy #1 is choosing the best starting words. With those already mentioned, you can add other top recommendations, including SLATE, STEAM, RAISE, TEARS, or RINTS. The secret is to use words with three or more vowels and common consonants.

Strategy #2 involves your second guess. If your first word has yielded very little, pick entirely different letters for your second word. For example, if you started with STARE and you got no gold or green blocks, you can try CLOUD or PIANO for your next guess.

Strategy #3 involves the management of the vowels in your guesses. If there is only one vowel in the correct word, it is often ‘Y’ or part of a Y-combo, like in BRYNT or DUMPY.

Strategy #4 refers to elimination. Sometimes you have to insert a word to rule out letters and not necessarily to find the correct word. You would use this when testing more than one new consonant at once.

Strategy #5 is important: Watch out for double letters. Remember that words like “JAZZY”, “BELLE” or “FOGGY can have the same letter twice.

Strategy #6 Remember that the original New York Times Wordle very seldom uses plurals as the answer, so avoid using ‘S’ at the end of a word for an early guess.

Finally, strategy #7 suggests that you focus on common letters like S, L, R, N, T in the 3rd or 4th row.

THE RIGHT ATTITUDE

Don’t rush, but take your time, and if you get stuck, leave it, do something else in the meantime and come back later.

If you can’t go further despite these Wordle strategies, don’t despair. Several websites and word-finder tools are available that can help you narrow down possibilities for 5-letter words. But more about that at a later date.

The Kaizer Chiefs technical team has some big decisions to make ahead of their 24th league game against Polokwane City.

The two sides will lock horns at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.

Kick-off is at 17:30.

Amakhosi are on the rise following their fifth successive league win over Magesi FC on Wednesday night.

And they need all their in-form players to ensure that they keep the pressure on second-placed Orlando Pirates.

FOUR KAIZER CHIEFS STARS COULD MISS THE SOWETO DERBY

Now, four of Amakhosi stars are at risk of missing the Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates on 26 April.

And those players are Mfundo Vilakazi, Flavio da Silva, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and Siphesihle Ndlovu.

The quartet are currently sitting on three yellow cards each, meaning they will watch the Soweto Derby from the stands if any of them gets booked against Polokwane City.

Ndlovu and Da Silva, in particular, have both been instrumental in Chiefs winning five league games in a row.

And sidelining them against Rise and Shine could prove costly in as much as it would be costly for Chiefs if they were to miss the Soweto Derby.

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema will face the music on Wednesday and Thursday at the East London Magistrate’s Court, where he will finally be sentenced on five gun-related charges.

With the state aggressively pushing for a maximum 15-year prison term, many South Africans are asking a crucial question: what happens to his seat in the National Assembly?

To understand the potential fallout of the 15-16 April proceedings, we have to look closely at South Africa’s legal framework.

Here is a breakdown of how different sentencing scenarios will impact Malema’s parliamentary career.

The golden rule of Section 47

The South African Constitution is crystal clear on who can and cannot be a member of Parliament (MP). Section 47(1)(e) dictates that any citizen is eligible to sit in the National Assembly, except anyone convicted of an offence and “sentenced to more than 12 months imprisonment without the option of a fine”.

This constitutional threshold is the ultimate deciding factor in Malema’s immediate political future. Let us look at how the magistrate’s gavel could alter the political landscape.

Scenario A: A 15-year prison sentence for Malema

If Magistrate Twanet Olivier hands down the state’s requested 15-year jail term without the option of a fine, Malema technically meets the criteria for disqualification. However, there is a massive legal catch. The Constitution notes that no one is regarded as having been sentenced “until an appeal against the conviction or sentence has been determined”.

Because the EFF commander-in-chief has vowed to launch an immediate appeal the moment the sentence is handed down, he will retain his parliamentary seat while the lengthy appeals process plays out in the higher courts.

Scenario B: Less than 12 months, fines or suspended sentences

If Malema is handed a direct prison term of exactly 12 months or less, he keeps his seat. Furthermore, if he is given a longer sentence but is provided with the “option of a fine”, the constitutional disqualification falls away completely.

A suspended sentence operates similarly. If he does not actively serve more than 12 months of direct imprisonment without a fine option, he remains an MP. A classic historical example is the infamous Travelgate scandal, where convicted MPs who secured plea bargains excluding direct prison sentences were legally permitted to remain in the legislature.

Malema sentencing: The Jacob Zuma precedent

To understand how strictly the courts view the 12-month rule, we only need to look at former president Jacob Zuma.

Zuma was sentenced to 15 months in prison for contempt of court in 2021. Although he received a presidential remission and served less than two months behind bars, the Constitutional Court barred him from standing for Parliament in the 2024 elections. The apex court ruled that it is the initial length of the judicially imposed sentence that matters, not the actual time served.

Ultimately, unless Malema receives a direct sentence exceeding 12 months without a fine, his position in the National Assembly is completely secure. And even if he does get handed a harsh term, his impending appeal will keep him in the parliamentary benches for the foreseeable future.

The historic Zimbabwe bird return unfolded in Cape Town on Tuesday, 14 April 2026, as South Africa officially handed back a centuries-old sacred soapstone carving and ancestral human remains to Zimbabwe.

The repatriation ceremony, attended by officials from both nations, forms part of an ongoing global push to restore unethically acquired colonial-era heritage to its rightful African homes.

As reported, eight coffins draped in the Zimbabwean flag stood ready for repatriation inside the museum. The human remains, unethically exhumed for research purposes over a century ago, will undergo further study in Zimbabwe before being permanently laid to rest.

This handover ends nearly 140 years of absence for the looted bird carving, originally sold to former Cape Colony prime minister Cecil John Rhodes.

Why is the Zimbabwe bird return so significant?

The original soapstone statues, standing roughly 33cm tall, were looted from the ancient Great Zimbabwe ruins by a British explorer. They hold deep spiritual value, as locals believe they carry a protective spirit, and serve as the national emblem depicted on the country’s currency and flag. Several other carvings were previously repatriated from South Africa in 1981.

Regarding the ancestral bones, Zimbabwean government representative Reverend Paul Damasane confirmed they will be carefully studied back home before being returned to “where they belong”. Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa described the overall handover as a major moment of spiritual rejuvenation.

“The Zimbabwe Bird’s return transcends the recovery of a mere artefact; it signifies the return of a national icon that epitomises our sovereignty,” Mnangagwa said.

How does this compare to recent artefact repatriations?

This milestone mirrors South Africa’s own recent restitution victories. In October 2025, President Cyril Ramaphosa returned from Switzerland with three sacred artefacts belonging to the Nkuna chiefdom.

The items, including divining bones and a walking staff, had spent a century in a Neuchatel museum after a Swiss missionary removed them.

Conversely, South African entities have also actively facilitated cultural restorations elsewhere.

In November 2025, mining firm AngloGold Ashanti donated over a hundred legitimately acquired gold and bronze artefacts – including royal regalia and ceremonial gold weights – to Ghana’s Asante king, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Officials handed over the items at the Manhyia Palace as a gesture of goodwill, reflecting a growing continental effort to heal the wounds of the colonial past.
