Shakira is making a sensational return to football’s biggest stage after revealing the 2026 FIFA World Cup official anthem.

The Colombian singer has teamed up with Nigerian star singer Burnaboy for the official anthem of the tournament to be co-hosted by Mexico, Canada and the US.

Shakira took to her Instagram account to share a snippet of the song and video set to be officially released on 14 May.

The duo – Shakira and Burnaboy – are set to perform ‘Dai Dai‘ at the official opening ceremony in Mexico on 11 June.

On the day, Bafana Bafana will be hosted by Mexico where, at least, 16 PSL fans will be in attendance to rally behind Hugo Broos’ boys.

SHAKIRA RETURNS TO FIFA WORLD CUP WITH ‘DAI DAI’

‘Dai Dai‘ will make Shakira’s first FIFA World Cup anthem since the 2014 edition in Brazil where the official song was named ‘La La La‘.

This edition also marks 20 years since Shakira was first trusted with composing FIFA World Cup anthem.

In 2006, Shakira performed ‘Hips Don’t Lie‘ at the closing ceremony of the finals which were hosted by Germany.

She was back again during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, releasing ‘Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)‘ alongside Freshlyground.

The crocodile on a little island near the Komati River bridge did not move when the helicopter circled above it. This detail alerted Captain Johan “Pottie” Potgieter, coordinator of the SAPS inland water policing and diving unit in Mpumalanga.

While other crocodiles slipped into the water, this one stayed still on a sandbank, swollen and heavy. The seasoned search officer immediately feared the worst.

For families living along Mpumalanga’s rivers, crocodiles are part of daily life. After the team discovered human remains inside the massive reptile, South Africans wondered how they knew which one to shoot.

SEARCHING AND IDENTIFYING THE CROCODILE

The search was launched to find missing businessman Gabriel Batista (59), whose vehicle was swept away near the low-water bridge crossing the Komati River. Batista’s family owns the Border Country Inn in Komatipoort, although they are from Vanderbijlpark.

Potgieter joined the search with helicopters, drones and divers. Search teams spotted several crocodiles resting on small islands in the river. Yet one animal stood out.

The crocodile appeared swollen, and it did not retreat when the helicopter hovered nearby. According to Potgieter, that behaviour often signals that a crocodile has recently fed heavily.

The team decided to shoot the reptile from the helicopter. Tranquilising it risked the animal drifting away or being eaten by other crocodiles before evidence could be recovered.

WHAT SEARCHERS FOUND INSIDE THE CROCODILE

The crocodile measured about 4.5 metres and weighed roughly 500 kilograms. After he shot it, Potgieter descended by rope from the helicopter to secure the carcass. Both were then airlifted for a 15-minute flight from the riverbank – with both Potgieter and the crocodile on tow – followed.

What followed left even experienced officers shaken.

Pottie’s wife, Capt. Joey Potgieter and commanding officer of the Ehlanzeni diving unit, was part of the forensic team. They opened the crocodile and recovered human arms, skin, a kidney, liver tissue, ribs and part of a spine.

They also discovered six pairs of shoes inside the animal. This does not necessarily indicate more human victims, as crocodiles often swallow items drifting in the water.

DNA testing remains underway, so authorities have not yet officially confirmed the identity of the remains.

CROCODILE SEARCH LEAVES FAMILY WAITING

While Potgieter was already busy with another recovery operation at the Blyde River, Batista’s family remained trapped in uncertainty. Relatives reportedly said they no longer knew whether to keep hoping or prepare for confirmation of the worst.

The incident has also renewed concern around safety at the Komati River crossing. In December, two soldiers were swept away after their vehicle entered floodwaters.

Rumours now have it that the bridge could close permanently, although residents argue that the danger increases mainly when outsiders underestimate the river’s strength.

Business leaders in the area have suggested boom gates to prevent risky crossings during floods.

KOMATI IS NOT THE ONLY RIVER WHERE CROCODILES LIE IN WAIT

Elsewhere in Mpumalanga, the Bushbuckridge Local Municipality also warned residents about crocodiles. Some were spotted near the Inyaka River by the Maviljan sewer plant. They urged people to avoid riverbanks, fishing and swimming as crocodile attacks remain a real threat in parts of South Africa.

Sunday mornings in South Africa often started with coffee, debate and a thick copy of City Press folded under an arm.

In taxis, lounges and corner cafés, the newspaper shaped conversations long before social media arrived.

Now, one of the country’s most recognisable news brands has reached its final chapter.

Media24 confirmed this week that it has started consultations with staff to close the City Press newsroom after the publication’s digital model failed to meet expectations.

The move signals the end of a title that survived apartheid, political change and the collapse of print media habits.

WHY ‘CITY PRESS’ IS CLOSING NOW

The last printed edition of City Press appeared on Sunday, 22 December 2024. After that, the title moved fully online under the News24 banner.

But the digital transition struggled to generate sustainable revenue in a crowded online market.

Media24 CEO Minette Ferreira said the digital newsroom “did not meet our expectations” after the company integrated the brand into News24 as part of a broader digital strategy.

The closure forms part of a larger shift inside Media24. In 2024, the company also ended print editions of Beeld, Rapport, Volksblad and Daily Sun.

Falling print circulation and declining advertising income continue to reshape South African journalism.

Around two dozen jobs could be affected during the consultation process. Media24 says it hopes to limit losses where possible.

THE HISTORY THAT MADE THE NEWSPAPER MATTER

Founded in 1982 as Golden City Press, the newspaper was created by James R. A. Bailey and the South African Associated Newspapers group to serve black readers during apartheid. A year later, “Golden” disappeared from the masthead, and the publication became simply City Press.

Nasionale Pers, later known as Media24, took over the title in 1984 alongside magazines such as Drum, True Love & Family. Over the decades, City Press built a reputation for political reporting, investigations and commentary that challenged power.

The newspaper reached readers far beyond South Africa. It circulated in Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia and Eswatini, and at one stage recorded a readership of about 2.5 million people.

Editors including Ferial Haffajee, Mathatha Tsedu and Mondli Makhanya helped shape its voice. Makhanya recently moved into radio, where he now hosts Power Talk on Power 98.7.

WHAT THE END OF ‘CITY PRESS’ SAYS ABOUT SOUTH AFRICA

The closure feels personal for many South Africans because newspapers once carried more than headlines. They carried identity, memory and argument.

For years, City Press reflected township politics, football culture, Parliament clashes and Sunday lifestyle reading in one package. Its newsletters, including On a Point of Order and Football Fever, tried to modernise that tradition for online audiences.

But readers now scroll instead of wait. Advertising money moved to global tech platforms, while younger audiences consume news through phones and short videos.

South Africa’s media industry has had to adapt quickly, and not every legacy title survived the change.

The final digital edition of City Press is expected on Sunday, 10 May, bringing an end to a publication that documented more than four decades of South African life.

For many readers at home and abroad, that Sunday, and many to come, will surely feel quieter than necessary.

The 2025-26 PSL season is drawing to a close with two to three league games to play for almost all the 16 teams.

The debate around who the Player of Season and Goalkeeper of the Season should be given the numbers throughout the campaign.

SA People takes a look at the three top contributors from each category – goals, assists and cleansheets – so far this season.

PSL TOP THREE CONTRIBUTORS: GOALS, ASSISTS AND CLEANSHEETS

GOALSCORERS

Junior Dion (Golden Arrows) – 13 goals

Iqraam Rayners (Sundowns) – 12 goals

Relebohile Mofokeng (Pirates) – 10 goals

ASSISTS

Relebohile Mofokeng (Pirates) – 8 assists

Deon Hotto (Pirates) – 8 assists

Keletso Makgalwa (Sekhukhune) – 6 assists

CLEANSHEETS

Sipho Chaine (Pirates) – 18 cleansheets

Ronwen Williams (Sundowns) – 13 cleansheets

Brandon Petersen (Chiefs) – 13 cleansheets

ORLANDO PIRATES DOMINATE THE CATEGORIES

Orlando Pirates‘ dominance in all the categories is clear with three players in each of them.

However, this is not surprising given how well the Sea Robbers have played thus far in their push for a domestic treble.

Abdeslam Ouaddou is on the brink of breaking a 15-year record of winning a domestic treble for Pirates.

The last coach to achieve this rare feat is Ruud Krol who won the league, the MTN8, the Nedbank Cup during the 2010-11 season.

Few voices can pull millions towards a television screen like that of Sir David Attenborough.

His 100th birthday may be a birthday milestone for him, but for everyone else, it should be more like a global moment of gratitude.

For decades, he has guided viewers through forests, deserts, oceans and polar ice, and he has done so with calm authority and curiosity.

For many South Africans, his documentaries became part of ordinary life. Children watched elephants crossing dusty plains. Grandparents sat through lion hunts in the Kruger. Families learned about oceans, migration and climate through his narration.

In many ways, Attenborough helped people see nature not as background scenery, but as something alive and fragile.

WHY SIR DAVID ATTENBOROUGH’S WORK STILL MATTERS

Attenborough transformed wildlife television.

Before Life on Earth aired in 1979, nature programmes often felt academic and distant.

He changed the format completely, mixed storytelling with science, and audiences responded positively.

The original series reached more than 500 million viewers worldwide. Since then, productions such as Planet Earth, The Blue Planet, Frozen Planet and Our Planet have raised expectations for wildlife filmmaking everywhere.

Modern crews now use drones, satellite tracking and ultra-high-definition cameras because Attenborough pushed broadcasters to invest in better technology.

Viewers can now watch whales hunting beneath Antarctic ice or witness insects communicating in rainforests with startling detail.

But his influence stretches beyond television.

His work helped shape public conversations about plastic pollution, climate change and habitat destruction.

Attenborough repeatedly warns that biodiversity loss affects food systems, water security and global stability.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), more than 48 000 species (± 28% of all assessed species) now face extinction risks because of human activity.

HOW SIR DAVID ATTENBOROUGH CONNECTS WITH AFRICA

Africa has always stood at the heart of Attenborough’s storytelling.

From the Serengeti to the Okavango Delta, his documentaries introduced global audiences to landscapes many Southern Africans know intimately.

That connection matters because tourism and conservation support millions of livelihoods across the continent.

In South Africa alone, the tourism sector contributes extensively to GDP, and wildlife remains central to that economy.

Attenborough also treated African ecosystems with seriousness and dignity.

He never reduced them to safari postcards. Instead, he highlighted complex environmental pressures, poaching threats and the importance of local conservation work.

THE VOICE THAT CHANGED HOW WE SEE THE PLANET

Even in his later years, Attenborough refused to retreat into nostalgia. In David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet, he described environmental decline during his lifetime with urgency and honesty.

People continue celebrating him because he offers hope alongside warnings. He reminds viewers that ecosystems can recover when humans act responsibly.

At 100, Sir David Attenborough represents more than television history. He represents curiosity, patience and respect for the natural world.

In a noisy digital age, that may be one of the greatest gifts of all.

Springbok captain Siya Kolisi is NOT rejoining the Stormers for any financial gain but simply because of his desire to return in Cape Town.

However, Stormers Director of Rugby John Dobson refuted those claims, saying Kolisi, in fact, took a massive paycut to rejoin the team.

It is public knowledge that Kolisi will leave Sharks for Stormers ahead of the new season, and this was seen as a way to ‘secure the bag’ before retirement.

However, Stormers director of rugby John Dobson has dismissed those claims, revealing that, in fact, Kolisi took a massive payout to rejoin the team.

Furthermore, Dobson revealed that Kolisi will not be taking the place of young Paul de Villiers in the team as he can play anywhere in the back-row.

SIYA KOLISI TAKES MASSIVE PAYCUT TO REJOIN STORMERS

“Siya was desperate to come back and made a massive financial sacrifice to be here,” said Dobson to Stormers TV.

“That gesture is appreciated. He said, ‘all I want to do is play for the Stormers and come back to Cape Town’.

“When you have a Springbok captain who has made a great contribution to the country, make that gesture; it would be unfair to him to reveal the numbers, but that showed where his heart is. There is not one element of financial gain.

“He wants to help bring youngsters through and when he is needed by the Stormers, he will put his body on the line as he does for the Springboks,” added Dobson.

“The reaction to his announcement just shows what it means to the people of Cape Town. He has this presence in a room. Siya told us he is not here to take the place of Paul de Villiers or for a pay cheque.”

IS HE THE IN-COMING CAPTAIN?

Dobson made it clear that Kolisi is also not coming in to take the captain’s armband away from the injured Salmaan Moerat.

“He won’t be the captain,” confirmed Dobson.

China just gave South Africa tariff-free access to 1.4 billion consumers. Nissan just handed its manufacturing jobs to Egypt.

The post Nissan chose Egypt: South Africa got the trade deal it can’t use appeared first on SA People.

Nissan is pulling its manufacturing operations out of South Africa and relocating to Egypt. The news dropped this week alongside something that was supposed to be good: China announcing tariff-free access to South Africa’s goods in the world’s largest consumer market.

Put the two stories next to each other and you get a precise picture of where South Africa stands in 2026.

Egypt, though?

Take a moment with that destination. Not Vietnam. Or Turkey. Egypt, which by most economic development measures sits well below South Africa, with its own electricity headaches, and not exactly known for automotive manufacturing heritage. Nissan assessed everything South Africa had to offer, compared it to Egypt, and STILL chose Egypt.

Business Leadership South Africa CEO Busisiwe Mavuso said this week that Nissan’s departure, combined with its Egyptian expansion, shows South Africa is at risk of losing ground in comparative ease of doing business for manufacturing. That is a polite framing. What it actually describes is South Africa becoming harder to operate in than countries that have historically been harder to operate in. That is not a statistical quirk. That is a system failure.

The promise that built post-Apartheid SA

For thirty years, the promise of post-Apartheid South Africa was partly built on manufacturing. Real jobs. Taxable wages. Skilled workers who became middle class. The automotive sector was a crown jewel: BMW in Rosslyn, Toyota in Durban, Ford in Silverton, Volkswagen in Uitenhage. The vision was that South Africa would industrialise its way to broad-based prosperity, that the factories would absorb the millions who had been excluded.

That vision is now in Egypt. The promise remains. Manufacturing, though, is leaving. And what drove it away was not some unavoidable external shock. It was a series of choices. Electricity supply that transformed from a national asset into a competitive liability. Regulatory complexity that multiplied faster than any institution’s capacity to manage it.

Mavuso specifically flagged proposed changes to black empowerment rules this week as creating investor uncertainty. Each factor individually manageable. Together, they created a cost and risk premium that manufacturers price in, and eventually price out.

The China deal arrives at the worst moment

But, it’s the timing that stings. China’s announcement of tariff-free access for 53 African nations, South Africa included, was reported this week as a headline about economic opportunity. And the access is real: preferential entry into the world’s largest market is not nothing.

But tariff-free access means nothing if you cannot produce goods competitively enough to export. South Africa’s automotive sector was one of the few areas where the country genuinely could. Nissan’s exit narrows exactly that capacity. The China opportunity materialises at the precise moment South Africa’s manufacturing base is demonstrating it cannot hold onto the multinationals needed to exploit it.

Egypt and Kenya and Ethiopia are not confused about what this means. They’re actively building conditions to attract manufacturing capital: infrastructure investment, regulatory clarity, government commitment to production. South Africa used to be the country that had those conditions.

Don’t expect a response

Here is what will not happen. No minister will stand up this week and trace the line from Eskom’s collapse to Nissan’s departure. The official response, when it comes, will frame this as a consequence of global economic headwinds, or colonial history, or multinationals acting in their own interests. None of that is entirely wrong. None of it is the main point.

Manufacturing competitiveness is not a natural resource you either have or don’t. It is built and maintained through specific, expensive investments in electricity, infrastructure, and regulatory predictability. South Africa stopped making those investments at the required scale. The reasons are well-documented: state capture, political patronage, and the deliberate hollowing of institutions built to manage exactly these things. These were not inevitable outcomes. They were choices.

For South Africans watching from abroad, none of this is surprising. It is, rather, familiar. The country they left is showing them, in specific and measurable terms, why the trajectory they saw was real. And what gets lost in the noise of the announcement is this: once manufacturing capacity departs, the supply chains, the skills, the institutional knowledge take decades to rebuild. South Africa is not in a pause.

Egypt got jobs. South Africa got a tariff deal.

The 2025-26 PSL is fast-approaching its conclusion, and the champions – either Mamelodi Sundowns or Orlando Pirates – will soon be crowned.

While all eyes are on who, between Sundowns and Pirates, will win the league, the relegation battle is also something to lookout for.

SA People takes a look at the five clubs that could still be relegated from the Betway Premiership this season.

THE FIVE PSL RELEGATION CANDIDATES

There are three games left to play for the teams that could still be relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Champions.

Remember, a team that finishes 16th will be relegated automatically while a 15th-placed team will head to the playoffs.

Now, with Richards Bay FC and Stellenbosch FC safe after reaching the 32-point mark, teams from 12th to 16th are facing relegation.

And some of these teams still have to play title chasers Sundowns and Pirates which makes it even trickier.

They are TS Galaxy who will play Sundowns on 12 May, while both Magesi FC and Orbit College will face Pirates.

TS Galaxy – 12th with 27 points

Chippa United – 13th with 24 points

Orbit College – 14th with 23 points

Marumo Gallants – 15th with 22 points

Magesi FC – 16th with 21 points

Predict a team that will automatically be relegated in the comment section below…
