Do You Want to Visit Harvard University?

Please read the following very carefully. You will need the information below in order to enter Harvard University Essay Contest. 25 lucky students will be selected to travel Cambridge, Massachusetts on Friday March 5, 2010 and return Sunday March 7, 2010. While in Cambridge the students will tour Boston University and will have a special visit at Harvard University.

The instructions are below;

Khadijah Williams was an 18 year old student that lived in various homeless shelters, tents and trailers for a large part of her school life. She attended 12 different schools in 12 years as a result of moving between various shelters and temporary living arrangements. Khadijah was able to succeed academically and was admitted to Harvard University. She believes that being able to learn from being homeless helped her to achieve.

"Being homeless has given me the skills I need to succeed on the pathway towards my higher education pursuits and life-long goals. My experiences have made me a dedicated student both inside and outside of the classroom" says Khadijah.

3. Are there any specific incidence in your life that you could point to that helped you understand the importance of education?

4. What obstacles have you experienced and how did you deal with them?

5. What have you learned from your experience of being temporarily housed that can help other students who have recently become homeless?

Please read Khadijah Williams' essay and view her interview for additional insight and information that may help you to complete your essay. Each essay will be judged by your effort and ability to be open and honest.

All essays must be returned by Monday February 8, 2010. Completed essays should be typed, size 12 Times New Roman font and should be a minimum of 500 words. We will accept handwritten essays but they must be clear and legible.
