We knew it was going to happen, but last night it was made official. Chris Bosh will join LeBron James and Dwyane Wade in representing the Miami Heat at this months NBA All-Star Game in Orlando. For Bosh, this is the seventh time in his career that he has been named an All-Star.

There are some people who thought that Bosh should have been named a starter, but the fans voted in Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony instead. Anthony has been dealing with various injuries this season and should he be unable to play in the All-Star game, Bosh would then likely step in and start in Melo's place.

Bosh has been having one of his best seasons, and he really elevated his game to another level when the Heat were without Dwyane Wade. He is averaging 19.2 points and 7.8 rebounds on the season, and is shooting a solid 50.7% from the field.

Box Score

What is your initial reaction to tonight's result?

The chickens finally came home to roost.

The Thunder fell to 20-6 tonight, but in a way it feels much worse because a lot of the problems we've seen festering below the surface finally came out tonight against the Kings. Over the past eight games, the Thunder have been playing some truly horrific defensive basketball. The team is fortunate that their offense is often good enough to mask these defensive shortcomings, but make no mistake, their perimeter defense has been really bad. Six times in the past eight games OKC gave up over 100 points in a season where every team's offense is struggling.

In previous games we could justify the poor defense to some extent - it is not surprising if a team like the Spurs or even Warriors go over the century mark. Sacramento, though? Sacramento does not even average 92 points per game, had only cracked 100 points four times before tonight, and as a team shoots under 41% from the field. Yes, they rebound aggressively, but their high point man Marcus Thornton only averages 17 ppg. Offensive juggernauts, they are not.

No, the Kings scoring 106 on the Thunder is a clarifying moment as to how bad their defense has gotten as of late.

What was, overall, the main reason the Thunder lost?

OKC simply could not stop the dribble-drive penetration once again. Opposing guards, whether they're quick (Tony Parker), smart (Chris Paul), streaky (Monta Ellis), physical (Tyreke Evans), or even none of the above (Jimmer Fredette), are getting into the lane and to the rim with surprising ease. The Thunder perimeter defense, which usually consists of Russell Westbrook, Daequan Cook, James Harden, Reggie Jackson, and Kevin Durant in some combination, is offering practically no resistance at all outside of the lane. As a result, opposing teams are breaking through the first line of defense and creating both layups and wide open corner jump shots. The Kings scored 34 in the 2nd quarter and 30 in the 4th. Those 64 points comprised 70% of their team's average output for an entire game.

Also, at the end of the game, the Thunder failed to execute anything resembling a competent offense. Despite the Kings' overaggressive perimeter defense, OKC never attempted any back-door plays or weak-side lobs that could have taken pressure off the ball. For a reality check, Nick Collison played 25 minutes and did not even attempt a shot. That fact is symptomatic of an offense that did not have any sense of purpose tonight.

The Thunder's offensive ineptitude sunk them in the end. After the Thunder went up by eight points in the 4th at 95-87, they were outscored 19-6 the rest of the way.

What is the key statistic to understanding tonight's game?

The Kings attempted 22 more shots than the Thunder in this game.

We know that one of the best recipes for a lesser team to follow if they want to compete is to increase their chances for generating points. Tonight, the Kings were able to grab 17 offensive rebounds and cause the Thunder to turn the ball over 23 times, including seven by Russell Westbrook, four by Kevin Durant, and four by James Harden. That is 13 turnovers the Kings forced by the Thunder's three main ball handlers.

As a result, even though the Kings did not shoot well from the floor (40.4%), from the 3-point line (35%) or even from the free throw line (73.1%), the sheer volume of extra opportunities they had at the rim overcame the Thunder's superior shooting in all three of those categories. I think that is what stings the most - the Kings weren't even playing great offensive basketball as the Warriors were two nights ago; they just continued to beat the Thunder in all the little ways, and those little ways culminated in a margin of victory.

What does this game mean for the Thunder today and moving forward?

The Thunder still have the best record in the West, which means that every lesser team they play here on out is going to look at OKC and see the potential for a season-defining win as the Kings did tonight. OKC is going to get some of the league's worst teams' best efforts. We saw that tonight, as the Kings played better defense and more competent offense than the Thunder. This is the new reality in which the Thunder now operate.

The two biggest holes in the Thunder's overall make-up - poor perimeter defense and turnovers - are not being corrected. Both are fixable with some adjustments. For example, bad perimeter defense is usually a symptom of poor individual defensive posture and an aggressive desire for steals, and turnovers are the result of players holding onto the ball too long.

There are 33 games in between tonight and when the Thunder see the Kings again. Will either or both of these problems be fixed by then?

***

Thunder Wonder: James Harden, 17 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists

Usually when a series happens in professional sports, it takes place in baseball. However, as Iowa Energy and Dakota Wizards fans have experienced this past week, the two teams have done battle twice...and they're not done yet. The two teams split the weekend series at one a piece with one more coming up on Friday, Feb. 10 in Des Moines. Here's a recap of what happened last weekend.

Friday, Feb. 3 - Iowa 125, Dakota 114

It was all Iowa in the series opener. The Energy never trailed in the game, but it wasn't as if the Energy were in total control throughout the night.

Now, when the Energy traveled up to Bismarck to play the Wizards on Jan. 28, the Wizards had every which way with their counterparts from Des Moines. On this night, the Energy knew they had to come out firing with intensity to set the tone.

"We were a little unhappy with the way things went up there," said Mike Efevberha, who led the Energy with 28 points. "We felt comfortable, well-rested, and focused tonight."

Efeberha believes the biggest difference between playing up there against the Wizards against facing them at home is the home-court advantage.

"You can never take playing at home for granted," the former Cal State-Northridge guard said.

Playing at home is something the Energy have done well - 12 wins at home. Their 12 home wins is the most in the D-League (D-Fenders also have 12 home victories). This night was no exception.

The offensive gameplan was simple. Drive to the lane, crash the boards, and get to the free throw line. Check. Check. Big check.

The Energy made 35 free throws during the win. The Wizards only shot 28 on the night.

"The gameplan was to be aggressive," said Efevberha. "We did everything we didn't do in the last game, which was to play harder. I thought we came out tonight very well."

Energy forward Nick Murphy returned to the floor for the first time after gaining a concussion a week earlier. Murphy, who played his college ball at Jacksonville State, scored 23 for Iowa.

"When we set out, we get more hungry when we come back," Murphy said. "We realize how much we appreciate the game. When I was out, I really wanted to play."

Head Coach Kevin Young agrees that his team was the aggressor throughout the night.

"I thought we did a good job being patient on their aggressive press defense tonight," said Young.

Dakota had five different players in double figures, and their two leading scorers with Edwin Ubele and Chris Wright with 19 apiece.

Sat. Feb 4 - Wizards 108, Energy 96

The score may not look as ugly, but as the ESPN show says it perfectly: numbers never lie. And these numbers were definitely in favor of the visitors in this one.

Dakota crashed the boards with relentlessness. The Wizards out-rebounded the Energy 57-39, including winning the offensive rebounds category 20-11. Through that, the Wizards found 32 of their points from second chances. The Energy didn't even get the opportunity to get a second-chance basket.

32-0 Wizards.

"One, we weren't tough enough and two, I thought we had too many excuses," said Head Coach Kevin Young."We didn't have much accountability."

Granted, Young does realize that the Wizards had plenty to do with that.

"We've played them many times already, and from two out of the last three, they were the tougher team. They were the frontrunners all night long."

Toughness is one of the tools a basketball player needs to have in order to succeed. On this night, the Energy just didn't have it.

"Toughness is more of a mindset than anything," said Energy guard Brandon Ewing. "Sometimes it's not about executing on every set, sometimes it's about playing hard. We have to find that this week."

Energy forward Andrew Drevo also pointed out that toughness was a big key leading to the Energy loss.

"They just killed us tonight," Drevo said. "Not much else to say."

Drevo finished the night with 17 points. Leading scorer was Moses Ehambe with 18.

One person who was happy about this performance was Dakota Head Coach Nate Bjorkgren.

"I was pleased with the way our guys started out, and that set the tone throughout," said the former Energy assistant. "Our bigs were crashing, and the ball just bounced our way a little bit tonight."

Despite splitting the series, Bjorkgren enjoys returning to Des Moines.

"I love it here, it'll always be special. This is always a great basketball atmosphere," he said.

Bjorkgren and the Wizards return to Des Moines to play on Fri., Feb. 10 at 7 p.m.

Warriors vs. Nuggets recap: Red hot Warriors hand ice cold Nuggets fifth straight loss ...

Remember in my game preview when I said that the Warriors were one of the few bad NBA teams actually capable of beating any team on any given night? Tonight's 109-101 Warriors victory over our Nuggets proved why.

Torched.

Smoked.

[Enter your blazing hot verb here.]

Capable of catching fire with their assortment of streaky shooters, the Warriors did just that on Thursday night by connecting on 52% of their three-point attempts and 51.9% of their field goals. Trying to match them shot-for-shot, the Nuggets - who haven't been able to shoot straight en route to five straight losses and six losses in seven games - managed to connect on just 37.5% of their three pointers and just 43.5% of their field goals. And the three point numbers are somewhat misleading as rookies Jordan Hamilton and Julyan Stone each made 50% of their threes when the game was no longer in doubt.

Every game during the Nuggets' five game losing streak comes with a valid excuse. Against the Lakers, the Nuggets were playing a back-to-back (the Lakers weren't) and the Nuggets lost center Timofey Mozgov to a nasty ankle sprain early. Against the Trail Blazers, the Nuggets were playing the third game of a back-to-back-to-back on the road and were simply exhausted. Against the Rockets, the Nuggets lost Danilo Gallinari to an ankle sprain and were already without Nene Hilario, Arron Afflalo, Corey Brewer and Mozgov. Against the Mavericks, the injury-depleted Nuggets (especially with Gallo and Moz out) couldn't hang with the taller team from Dallas. And tonight against the Warriors, the Nuggets were playing their seventh game in 10 days plus the Warriors were simply red hot ... they could have beaten anyone shooting that well.

All those excuses are valid.

Perhaps.

But taken as a whole, you are what your record says you are and the Nuggets are dropping games at an alarming rate. Of even greater concern, many of these losses are happening at Pepsi Center, where the Nuggets have shockingly become a .500 team.

I don't know how it looked on television, but from the stands the Nuggets seemed to lack purpose tonight (maybe it was the back-to-back whereas the Warriors were rested and ready to game up). Too many fumbled layups. Too many missed free throws. Virtually no blocked shots. Too many errant jump shots. All signs of a fatigued team, to be sure.

And it gets no easier from here. Other than drawing the Suns on Tuesday (never an easy match up for Denver), every team the Nuggets play throughout February is .500 or better. Making predictions at home, you probably had the Warriors game penciled in for one of the Nuggets should-be victories of February.

With the Nuggets playing as is, there's no such thing as a should-be victory anymore.

The view from the not-so-cheap seats ...

... with Nene starting at center, the Nuggets reverted back to small ball to open the game. Nuggets head coach George Karl went with his "energy guys" of Kenneth Faried and Rudy Fernandez, too, probably hoping to catch the Warriors off guard and build up a nice first quarter lead. Karl's energy guys basically played the Warriors to standstill and never moved the Nuggets up the chess board tonight. And on the flip side, this left Karl without any energy guys coming off the bench.

... Stephen Curry might be a rich man's Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf. Similar games, but Curry has a better overall sense of the game.

... it was fun watching Faried battle the Warriors' David Lee for rebounds. Faried is just bursting with energy out there and may have had his best game as a Nugget thus far.

... the Nuggets made Warriors backup center Ekpe Udoh look like Hakeem Olajuwon. Not only did Udoh have five blocks, but he altered many more.

... Arron Afflalo is looking better out there. The Nuggets need him to step up and make jump shots. Desperately.

... Nene was aggressive in the first half, making all five of his shots. Then he disappeared in the second half. Nuggets Nation is collectively shocked to read this.

... Warriors' rookie Klay Thompson - son of Lakers broadcaster and former Laker Mychal Thompson - was phenomenal, making 8 of his 11 field goal attempts including 3 three-pointers.

... the Warriors' front line of Lee, Andris Biedrins and Dorrell Wright is actually taller in person than they appear to be on TV.

... the Warriors are supposedly coached by Mark Jackson, but it sure looked like Don Nelson is still running the show in Golden State given the way they rush up shots.

... Karl went with his "trust" guys for most of the fourth quarter - Fernandez, Afflalo, Nene, Lawson, Andre Miller, Al Harrington - and they just didn't have the gas to compete with Golden State's energy.

NON-STIFF OF THE GAME

Stephen Curry: Curry killed the Nuggets - and Lawson in particular with multiple killer crossovers bringing back memories of Tim Hardaway. Curry finished with 36 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists ... and 2 blocks!

STIFF OF THE GAME

Rudy Fernandez: Fernandez just couldn't get it going tonight. 4-13 shooting. 4 turnovers. And a +/- of -17.

PARTING SHOT

There are only four bad teams in the Western Conference, and the Nuggets just got trounced by one of them ... at home, no less.

Cavliers rookie starlet Kyrie Irving was evaluated Thursday at the Cleveland Clinic by Dr. Rick Figler.

With the new head injury policy in place by the league, Irving will be guaranteed to be slowed into returning to play. Concussions are notoriously hard to pinpoint a return timetable on so we'll have to follow this one closely to see when he plays again.

A good part about the process is that a league hired neurologist must pass the player in a series of tests before he can participate again. The process will definitely take a couple days so expect Irving to miss a bit more action.

The incident where Irving injured himself was when he crashed into Heat forward Chris Bosh and then fell and nailed his head on Dwyane Wade's knee.

For the season Irving is 18 points for the 10-14 Cavaliers.

Game 27 Recap: Dragon Army Continues Rampage, Burninates Suns 96-89.

All Star reserves were announced before the game. Kyle Lowry didn't make it, but he deserves a spot. Our illustrious commentators speculated that he would want to come out and play great against one of the guards who took his spot: Steve Nash. And that kind of happened at the start of the game -- Lowry shot well enough, after all, but the Rockets' starters largely sputtered and died on offense as the game wore on.

Steve Nash is an all-star, and he deserves it. Anyone watching this game can see the massive difference between the Nash Suns and the Sebastien Telfair Suns. Yes, his defense is bad, but he's still one of the most efficient players in the NBA and a brilliant passer at the age of 38.

So I guess Lowry vs. Nash could be the all-important "storyline" coming into this game, but it was instead a story of another sort: that of the Master vs. the Student: Nash against Goran Dragic. And, <strike>like Vader slaying Obi-Won </strike>(wait, that's predictable) like Sauron betraying the Elves, the student was the victor tonight.

Dragic pulled off an excellent game, 11 points (on 9 shots, which is kind of meh) with 11 assists (very good), 2 steals, and just 2 turnovers. Altogether very solid. The 11 assists are the key -- he kept finding the open man (usually a wide-open Patterson) and kept the ball moving for the second unit. Yes, there is a reason they are the Dragon Army (NOTE: McHale's Navy is stupid. It's what Basketbawful calls the Rockets. C'mon) and not Patterson's Bears or something. Dragon is absolutely Nash's student -- you can see it in the clever passes, after all -- and his ferociousness on the break, combined with his smart decisions (like a mid-air touch pass to Budinger at the rim) is proof of his lineage.

Goran Dragic played very well, but Nash put together something a little better. 14 points on perfect shooting and 13 assists (with 4 turnovers) is a great game, though one that will perhaps go unnoticed because of the loss. The difference, of course, was that the guys around Nash (Marcin Gortat excepted) just aren't as good as the guys around Dragic.

Dragic may have been the bench leader, but the bench as a whole was just wonderful. All were great. But the best performer (after Dragic) was certainly Patrick Patterson. Patterson played like the Rockets' power forward of the future, knocking down everything he was given, rebounding well, and just rarely making a mistake. We talked about this in the OALABII post -- Patterson plays very intelligent basketball. The game-icing rebound (I like thinking of it that way) was a clever little tip from Patterson (against Gortat) towards Lowry. Oh, and he scored 14 points (on 8 shots, half of which must have been wide-open jumpers he found). So, you know, P-Squared was great.

Dragic-Patterson reminds me of the '09 bench one-two of Lowry-Landry. That was pretty cool back in the day, too.

Yes, the Rockets' bench outplayed the Suns' organization. They came in and destroyed the Suns twice: first after the Rockets' starters got behind early, and then after the starters gave up the lead at the end of the 3rd Quarter. So, naturally, we should wonder about the starters. What's up with them, right?

None of the starters looked particularly great tonight. Lowry looked alright, I guess, though he didn't seem to find anyone open throughout the game, nor did he rebound, which was weird. But he did manage to take a few game-saving charges at the end of the game, so that's good. I'd say all was forgiven for that, but the game might not have needed saving had he been better.

But it's not like the other starters covered for his mediocre game. Scola followed up a quality game last night with a more normal (for this year) game in which he 16 points by shooting 17 times. What's weird is that this may actually qualify as a pretty decent game for Scola this year, because while his efficiency was terrible, his rebounding was about average and he didn't turn the ball over, and that's a little better than average for him. This isn't the Scola we came to love.

Samuel Dalembert made a few bad decisions with the ball (tough fadeaways, iffy post moves) but at least rebounded well in limited time. What offense the Rockets had in the game's early minutes seemed to come off of second-chance points generated by Dalembert's rebounding, so it's tough to criticize him too much, I guess. Parsons, too, continued to play good defense and he moved the ball well (5 assists), but he shot poorly (his only points coming off of a flukey 3-pointer in the game's early minutes) and didn't rebound well while hanging around the outside of the offense. Maybe he's tired or bored or something.

Kevin Martin was largely a non-factor. Many in the thread said he disappeared, but if you were watching him you saw something a little more complicated. It seemed to me that the things Martin thrives on -- namely screens set by the forwards off the ball -- weren't being done. He'd go into the paint, run around a bit, and come out with his man still very much on him. In the past, this would proceed a little differently: he'd go into the paint (or along the baseline) lose his man, get the ball, and knock down an open shot or drive back to the basket. Anyways, we need more Martin. The Rockets won't be able to win many games if all of the starters turn in mediocre-to-bad performances.

Well, they won't win many against better teams. The Suns aren't one of those teams, but nevertheless they made it a very close one throughout. Nash, Gortat, and even Channing Frye did everything they could to take this game back, but the Suns' bench gave nothing. They scored a total of 13 points compared to the Rockets' bench's 57 (on 42 FGA). "Lack of depth" doesn't quite capture it, does it?

A Look At The McDonald's All-American Rosters

McDonald's announced their list of 24 high school All-Americans on Thursday and here's a brief glimpse of the squad breakdowns.

One of the first things that jumped out to me as the fact that the West has a quite obvious height advantage, with two Californians combining for over 13 feet of length. Candace Agee at 6-6 and Imani Stafford at 6-7 will have at least three inches on everyone from the East, and will tower over West teammate Jordan Jones (the shortest selection at 5-6) by over a foot!

Other than that, the proliferation of Big East commitments on both teams was something definitely noticed as I looked down the line. Seeing multiple players heading to Connecticut and Notre Dame are not all that surprising, but Syracuse, Rutgers and current member West Virginia also got nods. That means nearly a third of the ladies in the game will be playing with and against one another at the culmination of their prep careers!

Both the boys and girls games are slated to be played March 28 in Chicago at the United Center. The girls will play at 6:30 p.m. CT on ESPNU.

The East Team is -

As you see while perusing the list, the Big East is highly represented with a benchmark of 8 1/2 players that plan to play their college ball in the league. (Yes, a half... West Virginia commitment Bria Holmes is a halfsie for the Big East and Big 12 since we don't really know when the conference switch will be taking place quite yet). The ACC came up second, with five players, followed by the Big 12's 3 1/2. The Pac-12 and SEC (including new member Texas A&M) have three on the list and the Big Ten rounds out the conference representations with one. And if you like lists instead of sentences, here ya go!
