Stage 1 of the 2012 Exergy Women's Tour saw a change of leadership, a crash and Exergy Twenty 12 rider Theresa Cliff-Ryan sprint to glory over Ina Yoko-Tuetenberg of Specialized Lululemon, and Rochelle Gilmore (Faren Honda). Teutenberg claimed a time bonus from an intermediate sprint. This bonus placed her in the overall race leaders jersey. A crash in the closing kilometers put Georgia Bronzini on the pavement and out of the race. She was attended by the race doctor from local sponsor St Luke's , and transported from the scene. Kristin Armstrong (Exergy Twenty 12) fresh out of surgery to repair yesterdays broken collar bone, made a finish area appearance to witness Cliff-Ryan's stage win.

Now and Novartis rider Beth Newell tried her hand at an early solo break, which was brought home by Andrea Dvorak (Exergy) and Evie Steven (Specialized lululemon) at the first QOM. Stevens took the QOM points. In the rolling farmland behind the climb, Exergy placed Taylor Wiles in a break with Robin Farina (Now and Novartis) and Trixi Worrack (Specialized lululemon) and 5 other riders. The break survived the second trip around to the QOM, at which point Hughes, Rowney and Stevens of Specialized slammed the door and allowed Stevens her second set of QOM points. Stevens wears the Queen Of The Mountains Jersey.

Hughes, Whitten and Stevens work to shut down the mid race break

A tail wind on the run into the finish in Nampa, allowed the field to come together. The crash that took Bronzini out of the race occurred as the riders fought to set up for a field sprint. The dash for the line saw Cliff-Ryan take Teutenberg by a half wheel, with Gilmore and Canadian speedster Leah Kirchman (Optum KBS) round out the top four. Leaders jerseys now rest on the shoulders of Teutenberg, Race Leader and Sprints, Stevens QOM, and Gillian Carleton continues as the Best Young Rider. For her early solo move Beth Newell was named Most Aggressive.

Giro d'Italia Stage 20: Mountain Finale

The Giro d'Italia heads to the mountains for its grand finale on Saturday. There is nothing easy about this one. Stage 20 runs from Cales/Val di Sole to the summit of the Passo dello Stelvio.

To reach the finish, the riders must climb five significant passes: Passo del Tonale, the Aprica, Teglio, Passo di Mortirolo, and the massive Passo dello Stelvio. The stage runs 219 kilometers and will be a long day out for even the top riders. Spare a thought for the sprinters' gruppetto, as they will have a hard job of it to make it to the summit of the Stelvio in time.

After Friday's summit finish on the Alpe di Pampeago, Ryder Hesjedal looks very much like the favorite for Saturday's stage. Certainly, he was the class of the field on the steep slopes of the Pampeago. Michele Scarponi did his best to blow the race apart, only to see Hesjedal ride away. Joaquín Rodríguez fought a desperate battle, and managed to hold the maglia rosa, but Hesjedal whittled the Katusha rider's advantage to just 17 seconds.

Further down the mountain, meanwhile, Basso struggled as the climb tilted up, despite the hard work his team did earlier in the stage. Though anything is possible on a stage like Saturday's long march to the Stelvio, Basso may well have ridden himself out of contention on the Pampeago. Basso now sits 1:45 behind Rodríguez with Milano fast approaching. (Here is the full general classification.)

Still, with five significant climbs on the menu, Saturday's stage could still overturn the general classification. A rider on a bad day could lose minutes on the Stelvio alone, never mind the massively steep Passo di Mortirolo. Basso learned that lesson the hard way in 2005, when an illness sent him out the back on the Stelvio and he struggled to the finish well behind the leaders.

The riders climb the Passo del Tonale almost immediately as the stage begins. Just a nice 10 kilometer warm-up with a few 10% ramps. It's a long descent off the Tonale, then the riders climb the Aprica from Edolo. The Aprica is relatively short and often figures in the Giro d'Italia as a finishing climb. This time, the riders are still many, many kilometers from the finish.

Climb, descend, wash, rinse, repeat. The Teglio is short, but includes a section that hits 15%. Really, that's just cruel. Even more cruel is the uncategorized climb on the way to Trano. The riders will be studying the road book for that one, because the uncategorized climbs can often bring surprises.

Through the town of Tirano, and now the real climbing begins. The Passo di Mortirolo is relentlessly steep and stands with the Zoncolan as one of the more difficult climbs used in the Giro d'Italia. Typically, it is the final major climb of the day. Tomorrow, it's the warm-up for the Passo dello Stelvio. At kilometers four and ten, the gradient hits 17%. The maximum gradient is 22% and comes near the summit. Even the top pros ride a compact on the Passo di Mortirolo.

The descent off the Mortirolo is no joke, and a cheeky rider could try an escape there. Too bad it probably won't make much difference with still the 22 kilometers of the Passo dello Stelvio to race. There's a gradual false flat up the valley from the end of the Mortirolo descent to Bormio where the climb to the summit of the Passo dello Stelvio begins.

It's hard to put the Passo dello Stelvio into perspective. Few of cycling's mountains compare to it in length and difficulty. The col du Galibier and the col du Tourmalet in France are perhaps its closest cousins. From the air, the road looks like a bowl of spaghetti poured over the mountain. It bends and curves with infinite variety.

The Passo dello Stelvio runs 22 kilometers from bottom to top. The average gradients are in the 8% range, and there's a short section that hits 12%. The main difficulty is the length, and the unceasing gradient. There's no space to rest here, and a rider on a bad day will find this climb a calvary.

There's been some debate in cycling recently about whether the grand tours have become to difficult. The Giro d'Italia, in particular, has come under criticism for the sheer brutality of its third week mountain stages. There's a fine line. Have the Giro organizers gone too far with this double-up of the Passo di Mortirolo and the Passo dello Stelvio? We'll see tomorrow. With the general classification in play, there will certainly be some hard racing. It's time to play for all the marbles.

Bonus! Some time table information: On the fastest time schedule, the riders will begin the Passo di Mortirolo at 14.52 Italian time. That's 5:52 California/8:52 East Coast/13.52 UK. For the Passo dello Stelvio, the fastest schedule puts the riders in Bormio at 16.12 Italian. That's 7:12 California/10:12 East/15.12 UK. Fastest finish is 16.51 Italian.

<img alt="NHRA Top Fuel driver Tony Schumacher will perform a side-by-side burnout Sunday alongside teammate Antron Brown in front of NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600 crowd at Charlotte Motor Speedway -- with the unnecessarily controversial canopy on his car .

In a salute to America's Armed Forces this Memorial Day weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Don Schumacher Racing teammates Tony Schumacher and Antron Brown will fire up their U.S. Army-sponsored Top Fuel dragsters Sunday for side-by-side exhibition burnouts just before the Coca-Cola 600 Sprint Cup race.

Track owner Bruton Smith has invited National Hot Rod Association Top Fuel drivers to perform single burnouts before, but this gesture will do more than set a precedent or expose motorsports fans to drag racing.

It will be significant for more than its opportunity for Smith to sell tickets to the June 15-17 Ford NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at his Bristol Dragway or the Sept. 14-16 O'Reilly Auto Parts Nationals at his zMAX Dragway, across the road from Charlotte Motor Speedway.

It will be a chance for DSR to show off the full driver canopy that the organization and its designer have sunk more than $125,000 into developing but still cannot use because the NHRA technical officials are dragging their feet to approve.

NASCAR has its "Car of Tomorrow," and NASCAR fans will get a peek at what could headline 330-mph drag racing -- if only the NHRA would get off the dime and approve the device they question as a safety improvement.

U.S. Army Dragster crew chief Mike Green had pondered the idea of a driver canopy for drag racers after racing 200-mph drag boats. After years of tossing the concept around in his mind, Green contacted friend James Brendel, who pioneered the use of enclosed capsules for drag boat racing and in the process has saved lives and possibly that sport. Designer Brendel, of Hondo Boats Inc. and Brendel Safety Capsules, showed NHRA President Tom Compton and other high-ranking officials the blueprints several years ago and received the green light to proceed with the prototype.

DSR began working with Brendel to develop a second-generation canopy -- the first, Green said, proved too heavy. Indianapolis-based Aerodine Composites, which has designed and manufactured various parts for top NHRA and IndyCar teams during the past 20 years, bought the project from Brendel.

Aerodine built the canopy structure, using a combination of Kevlar and carbon fiber that attaches to the existing chassis, nearly enclosing the cockpit, The canopy lowers over the driver.

It is designed so the driver can quickly release it inside the car or safety workers or crew members can remove it from outside the car. That satisfies concerns the NHRA raised about whether a driver could be rescued if might be unconscious in the event of a crash. Also to satisfy existing NHRA rules, the canopy also carries a five-pound fire-suppression system similar to those used in Funny Cars.

DSR first tested the canopy in January during pre-season testing at a racetrack at Jupiter, Fla., and presented it to the NHRA for review a few weeks later.

However, NHRA Vice-President of Technical Operations Glen Gray said in February that the sanctioning body wanted its safety personnel to study it but didn't want to prolong a decision.

But here we are on the verge of June, four months later and with one-third of the Full Throttle Drag Racing series schedule behind us. And still we have no word from the NHRA, which said it wanted to make sure the canopy didn’t have an aerodynamic advantage.

But of course it probably does have an aerodynamic advantage. "It's got the windshield of an F-16 fighter jet, not an Astro Van," Brendel said. But he emphasized that safety is the primary reason for the canopy.

Besides, as both Brendel and Tony Schumacher have said repeatedly, the canopy will be available to every team. DSR does not own the canopy. Aerodine is manufacturing it so that it is affordable to every team. All teams and crew chiefs and drivers have been invited and given several opportunities to look at it, sit under it, ask questions, and give input. Kalitta Motorsports reportedly wants to order six canopies when they become available, and several other Top Fuel drivers have expressed interest.

So what is the NHRA's holdup? How many more weeks does it take to make a decision? How many more times does a Safety Safari member have to look at it to tell whether it’s something that can help protect drivers from flying parts and pieces.

Just last weekend, at Topeka, ESPN cameras captured footage of sizeable pieces of debris shooting off a Top Fuel dragster. It's maybe more miraculous that none of those loose parts -- propelled with a strong amount of thrust behind them -- has landed in an opposing driver's cockpit. Brendel, Green, Schumacher, and all of DSR has been hoping the NHRA will approve the canopy before that happens and we have a drag-racing version of Felipe Massa's serious head injury in 2009 in Hungary or, worse, Henry Surtees' fatal accident at Brands Hatch, England, days before Massa's incident.

So the canopy will be in place on Schumacher's car Sunday, and the seven-time Top Fuel series champion said, "This isn’t about performance. This is about safety. I want every driver to have one. This is just all about making it safer for all the drivers in Top Fuel.

"I remember twice when my front wing hit birds at 300 mph," he said. "If those birds would have hit my helmet, I probably wouldn't be here today. This setup with the canopy is the smartest thing you can put on a (Top Fuel) car today.

"When I sit in this car with the canopy I have a level of comfort that I haven’t had in a long time. Every driver should have that feeling. I’ve lost some good friends out here and don’t want to lose any more," Schumacher said. "The canopy doesn’t make us go faster. It looks really cool, but I wouldn’t care if it were ugly. That fact is I feel safer under it."

If only that feeling could extend past Sunday.

In this week's mock I have a few changes and a complete first round. You'll notice the occasional football reference - I tried to use a comparison to football to allow for people new to lacrosse (grow the game!) to understand easier.

Hamilton Nationals: A-Peter Baum, Colgate

The National Football League just had their 'suck for Luck' sweepstakes. Major League Lacrosse should have something similar to that, possibly a 'bomb the season for Baum' scenario. Baum's quick playing style reminds me of some guy that plays up in Rochester named Ned Crotty. Quint Kessenich called Baum a mix of Crotty and Danowski - although I believe Baum is much more like Crotty due to their similar lateral quickness, and explosive first step behind the cage.

This Portland, Oregon product (what?)...yes, this Portland, Oregon product is the best player available for the 2013 MLL draft. You might be thinking 'Hamilton will be getting Cody Jameison and Stephen Keough back this week, they need to address their transition defense and defense overall'. True, but in the MLL a team cannot have to many dodgers/shooters of Baums ability; imagine the nightmare of guarding Crowley, Jameison, Keough, Powell, Baum, and the rest of the Hamilton offense. Besides, Hamilton will be able to address their need for transition help in the second round with a Scott Ratliff, Chris LaPierre type player.

Charlotte Hounds: D-Tucker Durkin, Johns Hopkins

Originally, I was refusing to put any JHU player in this week's mock. Not because they are bad players, a few of them have a great chance to make it into the first round; but, because they played with no heart against Maryland in the NCAA quarterfinals. Not to mention, Pierce Basset was blown up off stick high, Durkin tried to get involved in the transition game and that led to turnovers (still the top close defender on my big board), Ranagan, Palmer, and Coppersmith were all non-existent. With that being said, Durkin is narrowly beating out Cuse's Megill.

Ohio Machine: GK-John Kemp, Notre Dame

Yes, Stefan Schroder stepped up this week in net for the Machine (defensive player of the week). He is now up to a 50% save percentage with a GAA of 13.78 - not too bad, but not elite and not great, just average. The reason I will continue to mock Kemp to the Machine is because he is a quarterback of a defense. John Algie did a great job in 2012 getting Steele Stanwick to quarterback the offense; now it is time to get a quarterback of the defense. Kemp is so great in net because of his ability to command a defense and his superior positioning. Since the Machine are an expansion team they need young leaders to build a foundation around for the future. Kemp is a 'franchise' goalie, he is simply too good to pass up on and risk missing in the 2nd round. Although, it does not look like Charlotte or Hamilton will need to address that position, things could change.

Rochester Rattlers: A/M- Marcus Holman, UNC

This is not a good lacrosse team right now. Watching Rochester's midfield play it is clear that they need some young guns to energize the unit. Drafting Roy Lang last year was a good step in that direction because Matt Striebel is not a fossil yet...but he is close to it. I love Holman's transition from middi to attack, he is a hybrid machine that is worth the #4 overall pick here.

Long Island Lizards: A- Mike Sawyer, Loyola MD

Sawyer is not an elite dodger or passer - he is an elite shooter with his right hand. The only reason I would jump Sawyer higher in my next mock would be because he is from North Carolina and I think the Hounds would pick him assuming that he would be a lock to play for them in 2013.

Chesapeake Bayhawks: LSM- Jesse Bernhardt, Maryland

Bayhawks GM Brian Reese told me that he is going to stick to picking names out of a hat as his draft strategy. I am going to go out on a limb and say that the hat he is picking out of says Maryland Terrapins Lacrosse. Don't believe me? His twitter account says 'Terp for life!!!' At this spot in our mock draft Reese is in luck because his strategy will land him a great player. Chesapeake is solid offensively. Johnny Grant Jr. showed us all how, like sophistocated french wine, he only gets better with age. This Chesapeake team is solid on each end of the ball. Spallina and Polanco together on the D establishes a veteran defense that will play well together. However, to obtain Polanco, the Bayhawks traded their rights to Dukes elite LSM CJ Costible (15 gbs against Colgate in the quarterfinals, he literally did not let Colgate get an offensive possession). In this version of my MLL mock draft I have GM Brian Reese shaking up his Terps hat, reaching in, and pulling out Maryland LSM Jesse Bernhardt. Bernhardt is a monster on transition D, and he could help Adam Rand and potentially Alex Smith win the GB after the face-off.

Denver Outlaws: M-John Haus, Maryland

Before I explain the pick I need to ask what the deal is with Denver's attendance this year. Granted the weather has been bad this year for their home games - but still, to average around 12,000 last season and to be getting in the low 4,000 now is mind blowing. I am high on John Haus because Haus is to Maryland as Colin Briggs was to Virginia on their 2011 NCAA Championship run. Haus has a high lacrosse IQ combined with the heart to battle every time the ball hits the ground. Hopefully, he will play well this weekend and make me look like a genius for mocking him this early.

Boston Cannons: A- Will Manny, UMass

Is Will Manny a watered down Max Quinzani? Possibly. I am not 100% comfortable putting Manny in the first round because he put up large numbers against lesser competition and there are a few elite middi's available still. According to LaxPower the strongest team UMass played was Bucknell. Does Boston need an attackman? No, they just sent Jake Beebe to the practice squad; they have a surplus at that position. They are deep at midfield, great at F/O with Chris Eck, great on D and good in net. What do you get the team that has everything? Well, since I believe you can never have too many quality dodgers, just like a football team can never have too many quality pass rushers, I think Boston will take Manny.

Think I missed big time on a prospect? Let me know in the comment box below. Check back next week to see changes and a few picks into the second round.

Last night in some Quebec Senior Lacrosse League action, the Kahnawake Mohawks defeated the Snake Island Muskies, 12-7. The Mohawks now sit atop the east division at 3-2 while the Muskies fall to 0-3, in last place in the west.

Karakwanoron Two-Axe scored three goals to lead the Mohawks and also picked up two assists. Joe Frank Thomas also picked up two goals in the game. Also with multiple point games were Gregory Diablo, Al Jones, Mark Kirby and Chad Norton.

Bluecloud Lahache played thirty minutes of the game and gave up three goals while Justin Delormier played the other thirty minutes in net and surrendered four goals.

For the Muskies, Collin Joe Hall led with two goals. Raweras Mitchell also picked up two goals on the night for Snake Island. The rest of their goals came from Ryan Jacobs, Karlwate Mitchell and Curry Rice.

Peter Paul played the entire game in net and gave up all twelve goals. The QSLL website did not list the amount of saves in this game for either side.

Tonight the Vermont Voyageurs will take on the Montreal Phoenix. The Voyageurs are 3-1 and in second place in their division behind the Mohawks, while Montreal is 1-4 and is in last place in the division. Game time is 8pm.

U.S. Pro Championship Preview: Party Time in Greenville

Cycling fans, I have good news for you - next Tuesday we may have a less horrendous version of the US national champion's jersey in the peloton. Yes indeed - this weekend is the date of the US national professional championships for both road and time trial titles.

While the Giro d'Italia is still ongoing through Sunday, the USPRO championship runs this Saturday, 26 May and Monday, 28 May. Many American pros rode the Amgen Tour of California this year and so will be in Greenville. Missing are riders like Peter Stetina and Christian Vande Velde of Garmin-Barracuda. This year marks the final time that USPRO will be held in Greenville, South Carolina, before moving to Chattanooga, Tennessee in 2013.

What does the weekend look like? On the surface, it is much of the same as years prior. Greenville has not significantly altered the courses for either the time trial or road race in recent years. While the courses may be the same, though, a host of young riders could overthrow the old guard and assertively claim their spot as the faces of US cycling. This wave started last year when Matt Busche of RadioShack-Nissan improbably beat George Hincapie of BMC Racing Team in a sprint to win the road race last year.

This year, though, the challenge coming from the young guns is stiffer than ever. David Zabriskie will be hoping to defend his time trial title from 2011 - the sixth of his career. And while Zabriskie's chances of winning on the flat 20.7 mile course are good, especially with Taylor Phinney still pedaling around Italia and Levi Leipheimer clearly recovering still from a broken leg this spring, the man known as Captain America would be well advised to still approach the start house with a healthy amount of fear.

Possibly the most threatening to Zabriskie's shot at a seventh title is young Tejay van Garderen. Van Garderen rode a stellar time trial in Bakersfield during last week's Amgen Tour of California. Brent Bookwalter of BMC Racing Team and Andrew Talansky of Garmin-Barracuda could also challenge Zabriskie.

The road race on Memorial Day will likely be the more exciting race. The 115 mile course, which takes four trips over Paris Mountain before completing three smaller circuits of downtown Greenville, mixes enough climbing and flat to prompt aggressive racing. Last year, Ted King of Liquigas-Cannondale, George Hincapie of BMC Racing Team, Tejay van Garderen of BMC Racing Team, and Matt Busche of RadioShack-Nissan escaped the final time up Paris Mountain and held off the group charging in behind them. In 2010, Ben King improbably stayed clear after a race-long breakaway, but the group behind included fewer than ten riders.

Several of the same names can be expected to feature again this year. Van Garderen will definitely make the split on the climbs and Hincapie likely will do the same. Busche climbs well, but does he look to have the same form as last year's Amgen Tour of California when he shredded the field on Mt. Baldy in service of Chris Horner.

And the domestic teams cannot be forgotten either! Of the smaller teams, you could do worse than to put money on Phil Gaimon of Kenda 5-Hr Energy. He has had a fantastic run of form all season, including an overall win at the tough San Dimas Stage Race in March.

All told, the weekend's racing should be exciting, particularly the road race Monday. Live streaming video - though of questionable quality - will be available on the race organizer's website for the road race. And a wide open field should make for aggressive racing. Who do you think will win or animate the race? Big group, small group? The possibilities are many.

Giro Stage 19: Kreuziger Rebounds on Pampeago, Hesjedal Makes Grand Statement

Astana's Roman Kreuziger rebounded from a disastrous, cramp-filled day Wednesday to solo home for the stage victory at Alpe di Pampeago, while Garmin's Ryder Hesjedal inched closer to the overall lead in the Giro d'Italia with a fnatastic display of climbing prowess. While Kreuziger was allowed to escape at the start of the penultimate climb, Hesjedal attacked his rivals with 2.5km to go, drawing only Lampre's Michele Scarponi for company before leaving him and coming within 19 seconds of the stage win. Maglia Rosa Joaquim Rodriguez of Katusha hung on to his jersey, losing 13" form his 30-second lead, but Hesjedal's hopes of victory took a great leap forward today, turning the tables on Purito on what was expected to be the Spaniard's comfort zone.

The favorites stayed mostly together until the final climb, with Liquigas controlling the Bigs group until running out of gas at the bottom of the second and last Pampeago climb. By then Kreuziger was up the road a bit, and Colnago's Stefano Pirazzi was at the front of the race (after riding with FDJ's Sandy Casar for an hour), before Kreuziger caught and passed Pirazzi for the sole lead. Ivan Basso of Liquigas took over with about 4km to the line, but couldn't shake the other GC guys. Scarponi had several digs dig too, each shrinking the group a bit, and putting Basso back on his heels, but the big names stayed together.

How it looked most of the day:

Only with 2.5km to go did the favorites come unglued, with Hesjedal the aggressor. From there, he and Scarponi put small gaps into Rodriguez and Basso, with the former looking like he might close it up and the latter looking like he might crumble. Hesjedal continually looked back at his rivals' faces, digging deeper each time to press his advantage. He was in sight of Kreuziger, but the Czech climber and former GC hopeful was holding it together and got his deserved victory. Scarponi suffered badly in the final km and lost Hesjedal's wheel, while Purito and Basso more or less held their pace, with Rodriguez coming past a faltering Scarponi right at the line.

The winning move:

Rodriguez survives, and there is a chance tomorrow he will best the other climbers, but he didn't confirm his ownership of this Giro. If anything, with a time trial looming, he put himself in deeper jeopardy of surrendering that lead, possibly at the last moment, and has only tomorrow to win or lose this race. With only 17 seconds over Hesjedal, he has to gain time over the BC native en route to the massive Stelvio or he almost surely will not win. Results:

Roman Kreuziger, Astana

Ryder Hesjedal, Garmin, at 0.19

Joaquim Rodriguez, Katusha, at 0.32

Michele Scarponi, Lampre, at 0.35

Domenico Pozzovivo, Colnago, at 0.43

Ivan Basso, Liquigas, at 0.55

Rigoberto Uran, Sky, at 0.57

Mikel Nieve, Euskaltel, at 1.18

GC:

Rodriguez

Hesjedal, at 0.17

Scarponi, at 1.39

Basso, at 1.45

Uran, at 3.21

Pozzovivo, at 3.36

John Gadret, AG2R, at 5.36

Thomas De Gendt, Vacansoleil, at 5.40

This was a ride-sideways-after-the-finish kind of day...
