Passwords - Hidden cost trap for businesses?

Passwords play an important role in the security of many companies. However, they can also be a considerable cost point. From countless hours that your service deser spends with password resets and unblocking accounts, to the huge costs of cyber attacks - In short, passwords cost your company money.

The following is what we're going to see hidden costs, which can be caused by weak passwords, giving tips on how to increase the security of your passwords and reduce costs.

Passwords as cost driver

Impact on productivity: Forgotten, expired and reset passwords can affect the productivity of your employees, allowing you to cost valuable time and money. According to Bloomberg, employees spend an average of 11 hours remembering or resetting them passwords every year. Statistical estimates that companies lose an average of USD 480.26 per employee.

Helpdesk and Support Costs: Gartner estimates that 20% of all help desk requests account for password resets, according to Forrester, each cost 70 dollars. In larger organizations, this can quickly become a significant financial burden, especially since qualified support employees are not exactly cheap: According to Salary.de, the average salary for jobs in first-level support in 2023 was approx. 40.000 €.

Security risks : Weak or reused passwords increase the vulnerability of companies against cyber attacks. Verizon 2023 Data Breach Investigations Report shows that 86% of data breaches are due to stolen access data. Ransom loss claims, attempted blackmail, fines, legal costs and damage to the image are the consequences. According to IBM, this cost 2023 companies an average of more than 4.45 million US dollars.

Opportunities for savings on passwords?

As already mentioned, passwords are associated with hidden costs. Fortunately, there are possibilities for IT teams to improve password security while at the same time reducing or keeping them under control the costs associated with passwords. We introduce you to some of these options here.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
In addition to passwords, MFA offers additional factors for authentication. According to Cybercrime Magazine, MFA can fend off between 30 and 50% of attacks on accounts. However, remember that attackers have opportunities to circumvent MFA, which is why strong and secret passwords are still an indispensable first factor.

Single sign-on solutions (SSO)
SSO allows users to access multiple applications with a single set of credentials. This has a positive effect on user-friendliness, password fatigue and reset requests.

Staff training and informing
Regular training courses can help to improve the handling of passwords. Clarify your employees about the need for secure passwords and the risks of reusing passwords.

Reduce costs with third-party tools?

Together with the 5G Synergiewerk and the Stadtwerken Würzburg, O2 TelefÃ3nica has set up the first street light with 5G technology to improve network coverage.

More locations for antennas are needed to improve mobile coverage in cities. But the space on the roofs is often expensive and time-consuming in the connection. Small radio cells - so-called "small cells" - can remedy the situation, and the network operator O2 TelefÃ3nica is now placing them in street lights in a pilot project.

This project started in Würzburg on Versbacher Straße in cooperation with the infrastructure specialist 5G Synergiewerk and the Stadtwerken Würzburg. Discussions are currently being held for further locations. According to its own information, O2 TelefÃ3nica already operates more than 40 conventional mobile phone sites in Würzburg.

The LED street lights integrate radio cells for 4G as well as 5G and thus allow data and voice transmissions. As part of any urban infrastructure, these are widely used. They already have a power connection, so that only one high-performance fiber optic connection for the transport of mobile radio signals needs to be added.

Acromag has introduced the I/O Server Industrial PC featuring an internal carrier card to interface a wide selection of related plug-in I/O modules. Designed specifically to work together, this combination of a rugged, fanless box computer and conduction-cooled I/O modules provides a truly integrated system for high-performance measurement and control projects. The first release in the I/O Server line, the Model IOS-7400, is equipped with an Intel® Atom™ CPU and a whole host of interface connections for peripherals and network devices. Users can insert up to four mezzanine IOS modules, in any mix, onto the slide-out carrier card to perform A/D, D/A, discrete monitoring/control, counter/timer, serial communication, and FPGA computing functions. The interface for up to 192 channels of field I/O is handled through four high-density connectors on the front panel for clean, easy cable access. Advanced thermal technology removes heat without open vents or fans for dependable operation from -30 to 75°C. Pricing for the I/O Server PC starts at $2195 while the twenty-plus IOS modules begin at $325 each.

Many industries can benefit from the I/O Server’s tightly integrated approach to embedded computing and I/O signal processing. Manufacturers will find the I/O Server package well-suited to machine control and factory automation applications. Military and homeland security system developers will appreciate the unit’s integrity and high performance. The compact, rugged design will work well as a mobile server and in transportation projects such as rail or trucking. Wide operating temperature capabilities also make the I/O Server a preferred solution for outdoor signage and display systems. Additionally, the flexible I/O configurations with easily interchangeable I/O modules should appeal to scientists and technicians working on continually evolving research, simulation, data acquisition, and test & measurement projects.

The IOS-7400 PC unit features an embedded Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz CPU with 1GB of DDR2 RAM that runs on Windows® Embedded Standard or Linux®. Standard interfaces include VGA graphics, two Ethernet ports, two serial ports, four USB ports, a CompactFlash® slot, and audio input/output jacks. An internal 2.5″ PATA hard disk or solid-state drive is accommodated as a user-installed option.

More than 20 IOS modules are available to provide a wide variety of analog, digital, and serial I/O processing capabilities. A re-configurable FPGA module allows users to execute custom logic routines and algorithms on TTL, differential or LVDS I/O signals. Up to four IOS modules can be combined in any mix on the carrier card for flexible, high-density I/O to meet custom requirements. The IOS modules employ advanced heat sink techniques to manage excessive heat. A thermal pad wicks heat away from the module and transfers the energy to a conductive cover that contacts a large heat spreader plate within the I/O Server unit. Heat then moves to the enclosure walls where it is dissipated by external cooling fins.

To simplify software development, Acromag offers several programmer support tools. A Windows development package provides API development software and Win32® DLL drivers, plus examples for C, Visual Basic®, .Net, and LabVIEW® environments. The Linux software includes a library of I/O function routines to speed code development. Both packages include demonstration programs with C source code to test and exercise the I/O module operation.

I/O Server units have a rugged, extruded aluminum enclosure that is ideal for use in hostile industrial environments common in manufacturing, defense, transportation, and research applications. These units are resistant to shock (5g) and vibration (50g). Sophisticated thermal management techniques eliminate the need for vents or mechanics that could permit contaminants to enter or moving parts to fail. As a result, an I/O Server with four IOS modules operates reliably across wide temperature ranges between -30 to 75°C (-22 to 167°F) with 0-90% relative humidity, non-condensing. Acceptable storage temperatures range from -40 to 85°C (-40 to 185°F). CE, UL and cUL approvals are pending. FCC compliance meets FCC Part 15, Subpart B for Class A digital devices. The power supply requirement is 9-32V DC ±10% at 60 watts maximum. Power usage depends on the I/O modules used, but is typically about 30 watts.

The city of Wroclaw is a proud, splendid, cosmopolitan and rich in history, culture microcosm in Central Europe, where I was prioviledged to study at the Wroclaw University of Science and Technology. Where my extended family still lives there and I try to vitit each year as my duties would me allow. If you would like to learn more I address you to: Norman Davis/Roger Moorhouse and their 2002 book Microcosm Portrait of a Central European City

Soon after Poland has joined European Union, the city has been strongly supported with EU funding, for education, culture and infrastructure, etc. One of such project was the costruction of National Center of Music in Wroclaw, superseeding the Old Filhalmonia, funded in 70' by Warsaw on the ruins, with capacity and quality suitable for small town.

The new hall, is partially sunk into the ground with 5 floors underground, this in line with traditional city surroundings of buildings height of no more than 6 foors above ground.

Thus, in 2002 the city created a consortium consiting of Architecs, Building, Music Experts, Financing and Business, and sent scouting teams onto the world to find best, most advanced and most successfull Music Theathers. One of such centers was the Lucern Culture and Congress Centre in Luzern, Switzerland. Vision there concepted by Jean Nouvel, with its ultimate accustic hall covered with an adjustable Sound Reflector by Russel Johnson of Manhattan School of Music based in NYC.

Organizers decided to visit Luzern Culture and Congress Center and meet there with the Centre Operators and Architects, with Russel Johnson with his accoustic Experts from the United States, representatives from the City of Wroclaw, and the EU funders, to discuss issues and topics starting from musicians, Construction, Structural, Physics, Accustics, HVAC and even backroom installations including an exclusive Le Piaf restaurant.

All of these participants were called to Luzern early May 2005 with 5 full days filled program. conference rooms were reserved in the Congress center, however all of particpants would speak in 2 or 3 languages, but we had in the room English, French, German and Polish at the same time, and questions required knowledge of not general languages but specific business, management, physic, Art and engineering, all symultaneusly translated, which required the translating person to interpret all those issues from technical knowledge as well as with the linguistic one.

The whole organizational duties of this "conference" in Switzerland was placed on the Polish Embassy officials in that country. Thus the diplomatic corps was spread to serch for suitable translator, who would be capable to overcome the challenges and ironed them out with certain authority.

At the time, I was running my company out of my office in Zug. The company was registered as a member of the Swiss-Canadian Chamber of Commerce, thus our name had an international character. On the other hand, myself was elected as a member of the Board to the Polish National Museum in Rapperswil and again I was known to the diplomatic Corp at the embassy.

Polish Ambassador in Bern, called me with requirement if I could accomodate my schedules and dedicate a whole business week for the benefit of all concerned. My agreement sealed the fate of negotiations which closed all open questions, in the end. Resulting that Architects, Sound Reflector (called by many "moving ceiling" adjusting the concert hall accustics to small or to large audience) was to be incorporated into the polish architectural plans. Recommendation of Russell Johnston was soon announced as a great success and a first qualitative advantage first not only in Poland but also a first in other countries.

Please note that the Concert Hall in Luzern is much smaller than the Concert Hall in Wroclaw, which stems from the size of its audience, while Wroclaw has a million residents while Luzern is a small University City of about 50 k residents.

We did get plenty of support and promotion, and as a top German Startup in IT (Real Time systems) 1991 for military, industrial, aerospace, he sent us to China. Introduced us to Chinese Space, Telecom, and manufacturers, to build strong backed relationships to increase business for both sides during the 3 weeks long Business Exploration. This was in 1991, and this is reported in another page of my Logbook inside this very Blogger. Helmut Schmidt became FRD first Defence Minister at the time of East German uprising in 1953. Later he was a very succesfull Finance minister, during the so called German Economic Miracle years (see Ludwig Erhard).

_{With his great expertise, competence in politics, finances, he created the first InterCouncil with 7 western leaders, which later morphed into a prototype G7 according to him. As an organizer of the Helsinki Accords in 1974 his take on taking in new members from the former Central-Eastern countries while EU placed stringent enrtry cryteria much more rigid and the earlier group 7 years before. When I questioned him "why the entrance hurdles are much higher for ie Hungary that a few years before ie Spain" which was much less industrialized. His response haas us all astonished:"because in 1987 we had our cofferss full of money, and now they are empty, and we could not afford now to pay for upgrade the economy.". Please not that in the bunch accepted was Greece. A wonderfull coutry, but country located 1 hour (GMT minus 2) behind Budapest. Geographically speaking.}

Part of business development strategy was to expand contact base in the Western Pacific region, so I started visiting my business partner Mr. Min-Woo Nam, an expert in Real Time Computing/Ready Systems from Mr. Jim Ready, a personal friend since 1992. Continuing East to Tokyo, met my Rep there, I did continue further from Narita to Honolulu to attend the PTC conference there. Flying Eastward is saving you one day from your trip, when you cross the Timeline somewhere over the Pacific. Accountants are flabbergasted when you show your travel bills from two places for the “same” day. It happens as i.e. you start from Sydney flying to San Francisco. You pay for your hotel room in the morning and in San Francisco you check in on the same day.

Additional goal was to go, and fly over the Islands and to obtain a helicopter flying licence from Mr. Ohara, the master instructor there. Most of my adult life there we books, which had made me stop and ponder on of such a books was "Catch-22" by Joseph Heller,

The conference was attended by over a thousand telecom experts from over 45 countries most of interest was South America, Australia, Indonesia, India, China, Korea and Japan. Great networking opportunities, noting various perspectives on the role of standard services plus some very uniquely suited and often already implemented services especially in South American countries with certain leanings like Cuba and or Venezuela. Some became opportunities to participate in projects there like distance education, health sciences etc.

The Second leg to my trip to Hawaii were to get to know a bit the archipelago itself which I was lucky to merge with the third “leg” which was the conclusion to my helicopter pilot licenses, for which theory I did read a priori to my actual visit. With actual flying tests resulted in practically “Island Hopping”, where I would see site for natives, observe various rituals, watch dances and listen to their music. During the flying hours we were able to see i.e. Pearl Harbour from up the Bell-1 helicopter, you see also oil bubbles floating to the sea surface from time to time. In reality seeing the oil bubbles coming out from the depth of the sunken “Arizona” is much more efficient from the Memorial than from hovering above it.

Interesting to me personally was that despite my Sheraton hotel room location 10 floors from ground, local pigeons were readily entering into my room from open door balcony. I have many pictures from this place.

1996 PEP Press Conference in Tokyo- Presenting our new chip processor “Autobahn” the fastest at the time serial communication, following our press Release in Las Vegas.

Ever since I started with VME 3U technology my company was facing serious technologic disadvantage from boards VME 6U of the Big guys like Motorola, Force and others. Their access to motherboard was over 2 (not as in mine one) 98 pin DIN connectors. This need to access other resources connected to Motherboard, gave them double advantage in performance on the Signal level, while our compact, boards were better handling temperatures/heating, and especially shock and vibration resistance thus keeping up the competition away from our fine and uniquely closed market. But after couple of years chewing on the problem, we came with a simple solution: on to motherboard, 2 pins (21 and 23) on the J2 connector were assigned but not used. We decided to use them for signal processing at extremely high clock speed of 3GHz. To avoid creating the crosstalk effect the signal voltage was restricted to 0,5 V.

Prototypes we built, tests were hopeful on a prototype level, Sample chips were produced using old Moto production facility were old VME boards were tested in Munich. Patent was registered with the Munich patent registry in 1995. Small foundry was used in Munich to produce sample batch. Initially Motorola Semiconductors was willing to produce full scale production line. The rules in this business require however that for a production series a Second Source was to be secured, in case short of supplies, for our part PEP was not in the chip business, thus a guy from Munich Stefan Krause was now CEO of our new subsidiary. Every time a new chip design appears on the market a suitable foundry has to be located and contracted to supply the markets, and since the break and or retooling happens a second foundry can take up the production immediately. The preferred foundry was to be Motorola Semiconductors with its CEO, Eric M. Thus, the need to make another pitch to Toshiba in Tokyo. The delegation was assembled with me and Josef Kreidl, a commercial rep from our bank in Munich and one from Zug, Switzerland, plus VITA (VME International Trade Association) CEO Ray Alderman from Phoenix, AZ.

The negotiations with executives at Toshiba were scheduled to take 3 working days excluding one Sunday, which was very nice for a May stroll into the old town and a park, full of prancing school children enjoying their ice cream cones. Oddity to me was that while standing at the ice cream counter it was obvious that the most popular flavour was green tea sorbet, I hated green tee myself. Eric Mass was thirsty, and we stopped at one of those refrigerators like in cantinas where you could get something cold and another dispenser with hot coffee or tea to drink. Eric reached his pocket, pulled out his credit card and ordered a can of "ice tea", guessing the menu completely in Japanese. In a moment we’ve heard the rumble of drink can making its way from the storage and into the chute and finally landed into the pickup tray. Eric reached for the can, picked it up -and dropped in on the gravel in front of the dispenser. To our eyes asking “why” he replied: the can was piping hot!

After reviewing this event, I am still surprised that our market segmentation in the so called West (funny how this applies to Japan), we still use separate dispensers for hot and for cold drinks 25+ years after the event. In the West they stay bulky and would make sore eyes if placed when and where they are needed. The Japanese dispensers are extremely compact (no more than 1cubic meter), being easy on the eyes of passers by.

The presentation for the press conference attracted a good overview of journalists and developers and business personalities, each posing good number of questions highly advanced knowledge of possible use of our Autobahn chip. One of the most challenging questions came from a guy named Satoshi Nakamoto, who asked us challenging questions for over half an hour, before he left, leaving no business card saying he was who apparently has created Bitcoin, the crypto currency and block chain code & applications. Now almost 20 years later the Bitcoin (with its units called satoshi even today) was scrubbed, tested as a legal tender in San Salvador and Iran (payments for child and medical supplies from US), is a scheme promising high returns, no tax jurisdiction for now, etc. Wiki tells us a story of another world’s entity appearing in 2006 (~), who brought Bitcoin to the earthlings. All these may be rumors and require verification.

We have never met again. His email was run on the Dark Internet as per CERN (Switzerland) and my inquiry led me to believe that his invention was removed from the net and rebuilt in elsewhere, for several years, and tested later as mentioned in a paragraph above. This may be a rumor as well.

The Autobahn processor was accepted by developers immediately and requests for specifications arrived at PEP daily. Celebrations at PEP Modular Computers took long time, and we had chance to gather new designs, analyses of responses from coopetitors were no coming as expected.

This is in my view a response from competitors and not coopetitors, who continue using this strategies wo win business. Yet this was long not the end of Autobahn. It gave new and better life for video on powerful processors, often multiprocessors in video, which used to be closely attached to video camera processors. In harsh environment Autobahn enabled placing video camera near the observed event while computer processing that video, was placed at length, enabling observation easy to record and process it back where the computers were protected leaving full processing power at its highest performance. The life of Autobahn processor as the Top speed performer continued after I moved to different fields. Recently I was invited to meet several partners at Expo Doha 2023 in Qatar where AUTOBAHN startups were presented again by new players.

Encouraged by friends and family members, I've decided to record some special moments from my professional life in the form of memoirs. They come like pages, including date, location a schematic, a picture with the person(s) involved and often with some incidental event which accompanied the mail meeting. The provide example, I attended with Urlich Gehrmann (my CFO) an American Management Association, European Chapter in London on June 25-27, 1996. The conference was an excellent venue to meet and to exchange view on various professional subjects. Baroness Thatcher lectured on Management to my great interest and I've met Benjamin Zander (director to The Boston Symphonic Orchestra) with whom we sung the "Ode an die Freude"in German language, from Beethoven 9th Symphony. Till today, I have a signed copy of the text page from Ben.

Incidentally, in parallel another big events run their course also in London. UEFA Euro 1996 tournament was taking place, on the night Germany played England in semifinals, giving 1(6):1(5) a win for the German team. Not paying too much attention to European Football, Ulrich and I were walking to a fine restaurant near our hotel, while he was chatting constantly in German to me, while I was a bit more sensitive to the shouts on the street we were crossing, hearing verbatim "kill the German bas....". The following morning in our hotel, sitting at the breakfast table, browsing morning newspapers we read that a poor Russian Tourist, german speaker, was badly manhandled by bunch of hooligans.

The blog has lost its original meaning and timeliness, but it may be a good venue bring those stories and share them.

While there are many legacy alarm and notification services that exist in conventional
centralized monitoring systems, quick response to critical issues is often not possible
due to manual processing of these alarms and events. In most cases, network problems
generate local logs or raise error messages to the network management system, where
backend processing or manual analysis are performed on collected data. The lack of
detecting the problems in early stages or of a quick response to critical issues may
cause a network outage or long delays in recovery. This article provides a solution
for Smart Edge monitoring which can be used to build rapid response logic and
improve network reliability.
Edge Computing
Edge monitoring is related to the more generic concept of Edge Computing but
focuses on measuring and monitoring network quality. Edge Computing is relatively
new concept emerging from Cloud Computing which consists of shifting the computing
application, data and services away from centralized nodes towards the edge of the
network. Shifting computing resources near the edge has several advantages,
especially for certain applications that suffer from poor scalability of the centralized
paradigm. Some of Edge Computing advantages are: 1) reduces network latency and
produces faster response time 2) better use of resource, reduces the cost of scalability,
and makes faster data delivery 3) lowering dependency on the corporate data center as
a single point of failure in the infrastructure, hence improving service availability[1].

Enhanced Network Reliability

with Edge Monitoring on
Industrial Routers

Network monitoring applications typically

consist of remote data collection of many

nodes across geo-distributed locations and

performing backend analytic programs.

This type of application can also benefit

from Edge computing, especially from

faster response time and better scalability.

The following sections are dedicated to

exploring Edge monitoring in more

detail and to look into some of the

implementation challenges.

Smart Edge Monitoring

Applying Edge Computing usually requires

some application redesign consideration.

Whether it is a monitoring application or a

manufacturing automation application, we

should decide what part of the application

logic can be pushed to the edge of network

and what part remains at the central

location. This could be a hard decision for

applications requiring heavy analytic power

capacity. For example, we should find out

how much of the analytic computation can

be pushed to the edge of the network,

considering available hardware resources

on the edge devices.

For monitoring applications, redesigning

the application is a somewhat easier task.

Considering the huge amount of data that

could be collected from many devices

in the network, moving part of that

application closer to the source of

information just make sense. On the other

hand there are some demands for allowing

the use of custom logic and third party

applications on edge devices. This comes from

the fact that in every network the end user has

the best knowledge about the system, pitfalls

and maintenance procedures. So they might

be interested in participating in network

monitoring and recovery action plans. This

brings some design challenges that we look

at, in the article.

Network Performance Metrics

• Bandwidth is the maximum rate that

information can be transferred and

measured in bits/second

• Throughput is the actual rate that

information is transferred

• Latency refers to the amount of time

(usually measured in milliseconds) it

takes for data to travel from one location

to another across a network. It is also

referred to as delay, because the

software is often waiting to execute

some function while data travels back

and forth across the network.

• Jitter is defined as a variation in the

delay of received packets. The sending

side transmits packets in a continuous

stream and spaces them evenly apart.

But due to network congestion,

improper queuing, or configuration

errors, the delay between packets can

vary instead of remaining constant

• Error Rate is the number of corrupted

packets expressed as a percentage or

fraction of the total sent

Network Monitoring
Network Monitoring is the process of
measuring and analyzing the values of
these performance metrics. NPMs are
measured by various network monitoring
technologies. The common measuring and
monitoring techniques are active, passive
and SNMP based monitoring.
The Active Monitoring method obtains the
current status of the network by setting
up a test machine at the point which
one wishes to measure, and then sending
traffic from one machine to another. NPMs
can be measured simply by using tools such
as “ping” and “traceroute”. In this method
test traffic may impose a burden on the
network.
Passive Monitoring methods obtain
the current status of the network by
capturing live traffic on the network.
Passive Monitoring can monitor the
network without additional traffic burden.
In the SNMP based method, the SNMP
agent running on the device collects
various measurements and makes them
available to the Network Management
System (NMS).

There are various standard RFCs for remote
network monitoring such as the Remote
Network Monitoring (RMON) MIB[4]. The
SNMP based solution is easy to use and
scales up well with the number of the
nodes in the network.
Industrial routers play a key role in
mission critical systems, whether it
is power system management,
transportation or industrial automation,
the network must be stable and reliable to
run critical applications. Outages and
downtime are NOT an option, and this is
a key requirement of mission-critical
connected systems.
As discussed with conventional
monitoring, network operators use
different techniques to collect the data,
but this is usually done in reaction to a
system error after the fact. Having access
to various data on the edge device,enables
Smart Edge Monitoring to provide a
proactive solution that can prevent, help
troubleshoot and even predict difficult
network failures. The table above
summarizes the pros/cons of each method.
The goal for Smart Edge Monitoring is to
shift part of the analytic logic closer to the
source of information where it has access
to system data.
This type of monitoring can be done
in different modes:
Analytic mode: In this mode, the goal is
to collect and analyze as much related
data as possible in response to an error
condition to help the investigation later,
such as collecting CPU usage, operational
temperature, error key words in logs,
background traffic, etc.
Fault Isolation mode: In this mode, in
addition to above the application will do
a best effort to isolate the critical failure
before it can destabilize the entire network,
like disabling suspected ports, protocols
or software features.
Fault Prediction mode: In this mode, in
addition to above the application will try
to predict a failure and provide proper
warnings and alarms about ongoing
problems, by finding any patterns (i.e. time
related, traffic type, and hardware related)
in fault conditions.
For example in analytic mode, CPU usage
could be the subject of smart monitoring
where the monitoring application tries to
find the underlying issue by analyzing
the system logs and correlating with the
current operation and the task that occupy
the CPU the most. This gives the network
operator the chance to find the root cause
before the system becomes unavailable.
Having access to various data on the edge device, enables Smart
Edge Monitoring to provide a proactive solution that can prevent,
help troubleshoot and even predict difficult network failures.
The table above summarizes the pros/cons of each method.

In other example, a protocol state change
can be the subject of smart monitoring
where the monitoring application tries
to find and isolate the issue related to a
topology state change and flapping
condition. This can be done by receiving
the state change notification from the core
application and checking if it passes a
threshold level. In this case the monitoring
application can isolate the problem by
disabling a port. This action could prevent
the faulty unit from destabilizing the
entire network.

Integrating Edge Monitoring

into Industrial Routers
Using Smart Edge Monitoring, operators
can capitalize on remote monitoring
applications with ongoing analysis of
system data. With this, system performance
trends are revealed, system failure can
be predicted and prevented in advance of
any alarm sign. However there are some
challenges to integrate such functionality,
especially if we consider a solution where
the end users can also develop and deploy
monitoring application based on their needs
and requirements. This requires a solution
to provide an ecosystem of development
tools, mass deployment and configuration
with end to end security. In this section we
only look into the technology stack needed
for this integration on target device.
The basic requirement of deploying a
custom application on any edge device is
to make sure that it has no negative impact
on device core functionality by providing
proper resource isolation. This could be
isolation for things like CPU, disk storage
and memory. There are well known
technologies in Linux based systems for
this such as Virtual Machine (VM)
or Linux Container (LXC)[5] solutions.
One of the obstacles for any custom or third
party monitoring application is access to
system data. The need for sharing system
data with third party applications is often
not considered in typical products. So some
application redesign is required to provide
proper access to system data and real
time events.
The picture above shows a proposed
integration solution with VM as the base
platform where the custom application is
deployed in its own container. The VM
provides the maximum resource isolation
and the container provides application
packaging. The internal data bus provides
access to system data via an Embedded
Monitoring Agent residing in the core
software. A publisher/subscriber protocol
like Distributed Data Services (DDS)[6] or
similar protocol is a good option to emulate
a data bus where the target application can
communicate with Monitoring Agent.
The DDS protocol provides auto discovery
for publisher and the subscriber nodes,
without a need for any configuration.

The Embedded Monitoring Agent is part
of the core software running on the host
Linux. It provides access to system real time
data by publishing events such as the
following examples. A registered application
can subscribe to these event groups and
receives the events in real time.
The applications can be developed using
any Linux scripting language like Perl or
structured language like C/C++/Java.
The applications can register with the
Embedded Monitoring Agent to receive
system events. They can request a
command to be executed in response to a
system event. The second table below
provides some command examples. All the
commands issued by the applications must
be authorized before they are executed.
The applications can communicate with a
central management application via any
point-to-point protocol such as HTTP
or MQTT[7].

The RUGGEDCOM RX1400 product is an
ideal platform to be used for Smart Edge
Monitoring. The virtualization solution
is already supported on this platform,
known as the Virtual Processing Engine
(VPE) feature. The VPE feature provides
a platform for hosting third party
applications. The picture above illustrates a
sample monitoring application that was
developed on a RUGGEDCOM RX1400 device,
to collect and analyze CPU, memory and
application information using above design
solution. The information is displayed in a
WEB page running on VPE.
Conclusion
Industrial routers are deployed in mission
critical applications where network outages
are not an option and every attempt must
be done to prevent or isolate network
problems. In this article we discussed
Smart Edge Monitoring as a proactive
solution which can facilitate troubleshooting
complex issues or prevent and even
predict network failures. We also looked
at some of the challenges for integrating
this functionality on industrial routers.

Funding Opportunities for Fintech

We cannot accuse the Horizon 2020 Framework Programmes of being driven by short-term trends, hypes and fads. The development cycle for the Work Programmes is far too long to be influenced by mainstream media or popular opinion. The 3-year time frame of the upcoming Work Programmes, the time between the deadline and the actual start of the projects, and the duration of the projects themselves prohibits aimless activism and requires strategic foresight.

Many technologies in the financial technology (Fintech) sector are well advanced in the hype cycle and are already mature enough to be applied in different domains. Horizon 2020 has always been open to projects that use big data and cloud computing technologies to support the financial industry, to proposals that promise to implement innovative financial instruments to finance the use of energy-efficient technologies, and to teams of researchers that are developing efficient and secure means of communication.

Even though digital ledgers, smart contracts and other Fintech technologies are mentioned only sparsely in the drafts of the upcoming Work Programmes, there will be many opportunities to create impact using these technologies in different areas. The challenges are to find appropriate topics, form capable teams and write convincing proposals that outline the impact to be created. The upcoming ICT Work Programme will most likely call for proposals on regulatory issues in the Fintech industry and ask for the application of blockchain, digital ledger and artificial intelligence technologies.

This is reason enough for the Fintech community to have a closer look at the Work Programmes to be published by the end of October 2017 and to ask the National Contact Points at Euresearch for help in identifiying funding opportunities.

The Storyteller became offically recognized by his peers

I spent the last two years on telling stories to very important groups of professionals, colleagues and governmental officials that in order to compete and win in the new and circular economy you must personalize your client, customer experience the Mercedes Way. To provide products and services to buyers market it is not enough, technical performance, quality, reliability and guarantee. You must add a part of yourself, something personal to bind customer to your product and or service.
I started to experimenting consciously this additional value after my business partner from Sweden, Mads Larsen, send me a letter of reference. He has noticed that my business attitude (I was CEO and Business Developer at PEP Modular Computers in Germany) was very PERSONAL as he perceived this. Staunchly Scandinavian Professional Entrepreneur himself, was surprised that I did dropped my children accomplishments with business partners in China, India, Korea etc. Like Obama, I often travelled with family on business trip linking business and pleasure, meeting new partners in their familiar surroundings often with spouses. In one instance we trained a son the the ambassador of a friendly country in our company and his second term he spent with Siemens also in Germany. Also my companies were sensitised to cultural differences, I had my engineers training my customers in Germany, and handing over their business cards with two hands, as practiced in many Asian countries.
These little signs on our part made the customer feel more at home than elsewhere. Our extra attention, personal empathy, made meetings, discussions go more smoothly, we could conclude contracts faster than competition, and in the end we won more business.
After I found Unisena Industrial Systems GmbH in Augsburg and IMU GmbH in Zug, Switzerland I instilled the Storyteller methods there, and besides I started to advise on the subject to my business partners in Central Europe initially, and later world wide.
3 years back my board of Directors awarded me a new title Chief Storyteller Officer, and a new business card of which I am very proud.

10 secrets about how employers really screen you

We recently hired a new team member here at Workopolis, and she is awesome. However we almost lost out on her because of a red flag that came up when we were screening her. The professional references that she gave us all spoke very highly of her.

However, checking your professional references is only the very beginning of the investigating that employers do into a candidate’s background, reputation, and conduct.

Here are just some of the ways that employers secretly screening you:

They’ll talk to anyone they might now at your former workplaces. This is the one that nearly tripped up our new hire. Someone in HR had a friend who worked at one of the companies on her resume. So of course she asked what the former coworker thought of her, and the response wasn’t great. (We hired her anyway, because that job had been several years ago, and we actually knew other people who had worked with her since who didn’t corroborate the negative review. But it could have been a deal breaker.)

This is why it is important to be professional at all times on the job, make clean exits when changing jobs, and manage your working relationships carefully. You never know who is connected to a place you may want to work in the future.

They Google you. Employers will be looking you up online. So if you have a website or a blog, make sure that you’re not publishing any images or information that you wouldn’t want potential new bosses to see. Similarly, you might want to tone down any aggressive or foul-mouthed commenting or posting you’d otherwise be tempted do on other websites.

They will check your social media profiles. More and more people are on Twitter, Facebook, or LinkedIn (or all three) as well many other social networking sites. Got a YouTube channel? Your interviewer will be watching your recent videos. They’re going to check out your updates and tweets. Make sure that the content you post and share doesn’t cast you in an unfavourable light.

Here is what they want to see.

Your phone manners and voicemail. Did you speak on the phone with the employer? Did you sound friendly and upbeat? How did you answer the phone? The small details matter when someone is getting to know you for the first time. And be sure to have a professional-sounding voicemail message if you’re applying for jobs.

I once called a potential hire, and his recorded voice (in an imitation of Yoda) said, “Not home am I. Patient you must be. Call you back I will.” I didn’t leave a message.

Also, I think everyone knows this by now, but have a professional looking email address for your resume.PimpDaddy69@email.com is going to be judged by his address.

They’ll talk to the receptionist. Were you polite and friendly when you came into the office for your job interview? How was your demeanour while waiting? Everyone you interact with at the company (and not just the interviewer) is part of the screening process.

They’ll judge you by what you’re wearing. We had a candidate once come in for an interview in shorts. That’s just ridiculous. You have to dress professionally to show respect for the interviewer and appropriately for the industry and the role.

How you wear it matters. Employers will also notice if your clothes are clean, pressed or wrinkled, if your hair is unkempt or out-dated, if your shoes are polished or ragged. All of these can be indicators of your personality and of how much attention you pay to detail.

Body language and posture. Employers will be watching how you move and act to see if you appear to be honest, confident and friendly. Slouching, avoiding eye-contact or shuffling around in your seat can all give them the wrong impression.

Your in-person manners. Similarly, do you have a good handshake? Did you thank the interviewer for their time? How did you act when offered water or a coffee? Did you send a thank-you note after the interviewer. Employers want to see that you know the social conventions of polite professional interactions.

In the case of a lunch interview, your table manners. Interviews over a meal create a whole new source of potential pitfalls. Those table manners that your mother used to stress will come in handy. Place your napkin on your lap. Reach for the glass on your right. Order food that you can eat with a knife and fork. (Finger foods can be messy.) Take small bites, so that you don’t get caught being asked a question when your mouth is full. Don’t talk with your mouth full. Don’t fight for the cheque. It’s an interview, not a social occasion; the employer will pay for lunch.

When you’re looking for a job, the last thing you want to do is give a potential employer a reason not to like you. They’ll be looking at more than just your resume and job interview answers, so (unlike Shorts Guy and Yoda Boy) make sure that you pay attention to detail at every step along the way.
