The BNP Paribas Open is considered to be the very best professional tennis tournament in the world taking second place only to the majors. This year close to 300,000 people attended the event that is held t the tennis garden in Indian Wells. My wife Lori and I had the chance to go to several of the matches, including the Men's and Women's finals!!! Tennis LIVE is a thrill to watch and when you are given court side seats just 5 rows up from the floor it is even more incredible. Learn all about this yearly event as we talk with the director of marketing. Hey CI Bloggers...Several months have gone by without a post for several reasons, reasons that really no one really cares to hear about so I'll just spend the next few days getting you all caught up on all of our broadcasts...So far we have broadcast live on JOY 92 FM here in the Coachella Valley (91.7 on the dial) for that past 26 weeks and we have had a lot a very good feedback from our shows. I will be sending out updates on the last 9 shows to all of you, starting with our show about our favorite things in the Coachella Valley.

Making Music History

Hello CI Bloggers!!! - HAPPY 2011!!!

The history of American Rock n' Roll can be traced all the way back to the slaves of the south. From spirituals to ragtime, jazz, blues, country western to Elvis, the Beatles and beyond. A big part of American music history falls between the years of 1965 - 1970 where Bob Dylan went from folk to electric and the Beatles on the east coast (Revolver) were battling out with the Beach Boys on the west coast (Pet Sounds) and two huge music festivals - The Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 and of course Woodstock in 1969. Both of these music festivals will have a significant place in music history because that was the time that american music changed forever and led to what we know today as "The Music Industry".

This Thursday on Cultural Intersection we will be interviewing one of our weekend musicians here at Southwest who just happened to have played at both the Monterey Pop Festival and at Woodstock. His name is Steve Madaio and back then he was a part of the Pul Butterfield Blues Band, but that was just the beginning of a HUGE career including playing with Stevie Wonder, The Rolling Stones, The Allman Brothers, Earth Wind & Fire, Lynard Skynyrd and the list goes on and on and on!!! Life Lessons

We are coming up on the end of another year. 2010 is in our rear view mirror and 2011, with all of it's hopes, pressures, excitement, goals etc. is fast approaching. The beginning of the new year always seems to come with the idea of a possible fresh start. Fresh starts assume that something has to change in your life. It could be something as simple as getting your taxes done early this year or something much harder like overcoming an addiction.

This week on Cultural Intersection you will be introduced to my good friend Dave Romano. Dave is pictured above with his wife Lisa. This picture has the appearance of joy and contentment...Well it does now, but this picture was very different not to long ago. Dave went through over 20 years of struggle with drugs and alcohol and addiction, but his life was radically changed. So today we introduce a new segment to our program called "Life Lessons" - these are real stories of ordinary people with extraordinary lives.

We hope that you will walk away from this interview with hope for the new year and a sense that even when things seem totally out of control, there's always hope if you're just willing to admit that you need help and are willing to change.

Focus Group

I'm sure that you have heard of the term "Focus Group" before. It's where a group of people are purposely put together, usually with varying backgrounds and experience, and are set to the task of discussing through a particular topic or new product or television show. Well today I'd like to suggest that we all join a virtual Focus Group and think together about WHAT CHRISTMAS IS REALLY ABOUT. Every year we seem to always go through the motions of Christmas, and by that I mean we tend to go to our place of SAME TRADITIONS, SHOPPING, STORIES and even PEOPLE that we see. Now don't get me wrong, I think traditions are wonderful and can create great memories for family and friends. What I'm suggesting this year is breaking out of the RUT we sometimes get in around this time of year and do something totally different. Here's a list of some things that you could add to your list of "THINGS I DO AT CHRISTMAS" that might create a NEW TRADITION for you this year:

* Get a group of people together and go caroling in your neighborhood.

* Volunteer at an outreach ministry (The Narrow Door/Martha's Vineyard) or a like minded organization in your neck of the woods.

* TURN THE TV OFF and have a meal with friends and family.

* Pull out the board games and have a game night.

* Host a dinner party and invite your neighbors over on Christmas Eve, then take them to a Christmas Eve service at your church.

* Take advantage of the SALES happening at any toy store and purchase extra toys for needy children.

* Make contact with friends and family that you haven't spoken to in a while. If there's tension between you sometimes extending an "OLIVE BRANCH" of genuine "PEACE AND GOOD WILL" can go a long way to promote healing.

* Read the story of Christmas in the first few chapters of the New Testament book of LUKE.

* Practice "RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS" during this crazy time of year.

You have probably thought of some things to add to this list as you read through it. Let's see if this year we can TAKE A DEEP BREATH and change our perspective by FOCUSING on the REAL MEANING OF CHRISTMAS - HOPE, PEACE, JOY and SALVATION.

Hey CI Bloggers!!!

Every day we are faced with decisions. Most decisions we make are simple ones...What will I have for breakfast? - Do I wear the black sweater or the grey one? - Latte or fresh brewed? But other decisions can be critical and can change the course of YOUR life and those you are connected to.

Most critical decisions come down to two alternatives, either positive or negative. You could choose to do something that would bring healing, health, strength and security or something that could bring destruction, sickness or even weaken your stability. It only takes one moment and one decision that could change your life forever.

This week on Cultural Intersection we are interviewing Ralph Waite. You know Ralph as John Walton from the long running show "The Walton's". We know him as our neighbor and friend here in the Palm Desert area. John will tell the story of a decision he made that would change his life and all of the lives of those he worked with and the lives of those he reaches out to today. Everybody is concerned about their health. There are so many questions about what the best approach is to not only being healthy, but living healthy lives. This week we are talking with Dr. Nicole Ortiz (left) who practices Naturopathic Medicine. I have always been interested in this type of approach to medicine because it goes way beyond the diagnosis and treatment of health issues and gets to the bottom of those problems...How you take care of yourself day to day. Dr. Otiz takes a "Global" approach to treatment by considering the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health of each patient. We had an opportunity to discuss the benefits of this type of practice and Dr. Ortiz even has a few tips on how to shop healthy and save money doing so during the holiday season. The American MUSIC? Awards

Last night was the yearly music industries tribute to themselves, The American Music Awards. The evening was an endless marketing event where actors from movies, that just so happen to be "opening soon in a theater near you", would show up to give awards out to what seemed like the same list of endless so called musicians who, just by coincidence, were releasing new CD projects into the stores.

There were several performances that made me wonder why we ever got so mad at Milli Vanilli. It was more than obvious that even though their microphones were live, the backing tracks were heavily used along with Auto Tuned voices.

Is this really the state of AMERICAN MUSIC? Have we come so far down the road technologically that we've stopped making music and are now just creating pretty people lip-syncing to monotonous dance club music? Do the people that make the music these days in the music industry even know the rich history of the music that has come before them? I really have to wonder. It seems as though the musicianship and mastery of an instrument or voice has become totally secondary to the machine that is our current music reality.

The sad thing is that there are a lot of AMAZING musicians out in the music industry that nobody knows about...Probably because they're making REAL music!!! Music that changes the way people think and feel because it's that good is what AMERICAN music used to be about.

How great would it be to have an award show that celebrated the REAL musicians that write incredible lyrics and support it with well written arrangements and then performs it without all the lights, video walls, special effects on the voice and marketing garbage...And just let's the music be the music...Now that would truly be an AMERICAN MUSIC award show.

If you know of, or have heard a musician or group that makes GREAT music and no one knows about them, LET US KNOW...We'll call them up and interview them on the show...Let's start a ground swell of getting back to the roots of great American music!!!

Remembering Our Veteran's

Last Thursday was Veteran's Day 2010, 69 years after the attack on Pearl Harbor that hurled us into World War 2. This year Veteran's Day was different for me. This year my Dad was not hear. He past away on January 20th of this year, and I can't help but think about him when remembering our veterans.

Both my parents served in World War 2. My mother (Barbara Joan King) served over in England as part of the Royal Air Force. She was a Map Lady. She would get the bombing attack plan from the war room generals then lock herself in a room no larger than a closet to pull sectional maps for all of the pilots. She would then hand them to each of the Captains as they walked out the door before boarding their bombers. Every day as she was handing out those maps was the last time she saw some of those men. My Father (Edwin Mouzon moore) served in the Army here in the United States at a hospital base. He trained the troops for battle and he too sent men off to their assignments knowing that he may never see them again.

Living in the United States today, 69 years later, it's hard to imagine what it must have been like to be involved in a WORLD WAR. I can't imagine what it must have been like seeing friends and people you had made contact with die every day. We have so much to thank ALL of these men and women who served to literally defeat tyranny and evil. Who knows what the United States and the rest of the world for that matter, would be like if they had lost the battle.

The picture I posted with these thoughts is the night my Dad & Mom were married, just one year after my father had been honorably dischrged from the Army. What a picture of NEW BEGINNING!!! and because of their's and ten's of thousand's of others who served, we can have a new beginning every day. May we live our lives in such a way to honor those who fought and died so selflessly on our behalf. We must never forget what they did for us.

We are very excited about the opportunity to share our thoughts, ideas and interviews with a much larger audience. Today we will air a brand new "PILOT" show re-introducing ourselves to our new audience with a look forward at future shows. Elli moved to the Coachella Valley in 2000 with husband James - her high school sweetheart and their three children via Mammoth Lakes. All three kids are now away at college giving Elli plenty of time to do what she loves – being a podast sidekick after a long career over the airwaves as a dj, newscaster and talk show host. Elli is an avid roller blader, fitness freak, and loves sunrise Boot Camp at the park! Chris was born and raised in the Coachella Valley and spent most of his childhood locked away in some dark room with only a piano and a walkman with a Carpenters cassette tape. He’s rarely seen outside a studio or stage. If you’re lucky, you might see him flying through the night sky in a sports blazer, yelling at an imaginary drummer to “play it like Karen did!” You can connect with Chris on his Facebook page.

What is currently on your playlist?
It's quite extensive actually, so to narrow it down, I have a variety of periods and genres; everything from the Beatles, to the Vince Guaraldi Trio, a little Death Cab For Cutie - a plethora of Christmas music... Oh and of course, a little Jonas Day :)

What are you reading right now?
Currently just trying to stay in the Bible. A good friend of mine just wrote and is releasing a book on the life of Karen Carpenter so I'll probably be reading that soon...

What was your first job?
The very first job I ever applied for (and incidentally was hired on as an intern) was KCMJ Radio in Palm Springs. I did a lot of archiving of 1/4" reel-to-reel tapes, and did some voiceover work. However, the first time I actually made any sort of real money working there was when they convinced me to dress up as Bart Simpson (yes, oversized rubber head, blue tights and all!) and stand out in front of the grand opening of 'Big-O Tires' and wave people in while the station broadcasted live from the parking lot. Needless to say, that job didn't last very long...

What inspires you?

I am especially inspired by opportunity I am given as it relates to my passion for creativity.

Favorite TV series?

I'm a bit of an old soul, so I'm gonna go with "All In The Family". That was truly one of the most cleverly written and performed shows of all time.
