The GelderHead Thought Of The Day: “If Stupidity got us into this mess, then why can’t it get us out?” ~ Will Rogers

Hundreds of former staff members of college radio station KCR at San Diego State University are expected to descend upon San Diego for a weekend-long reunion spanning 40 years of broadcasting Friday, October 16 through Sunday, October 18 at the Courtyard by Marriott Old Town and on the campus of San Diego State University.

Activities planned for the event include:

• Friday night mixer to reunite old friends and meet new ones across the years of the station’s existence
• Saturday seminars and discussions on the San Diego State University campus for current students with KCR alumni
• Guided campus tours for returning alumni
• The chance for former college DJs to play their favorite tunes on KCR one more time
• Displays of KCR memorabilia, photographs, and other items guaranteed to embarrass many of the participants
• Saturday evening dinner and awards banquet

“At the last reunion, we managed to limit our encounters with law enforcement and noise ordinances while celebrating our infamous beginnings and exaggerating claims about our contributions,” said Reunion committee chairman Bruce Greenberg.

“Somehow we also managed to engage in a handful of adult activities such as networking and generating support for the current students who ensure KCR’s voice remains louder than ever.”

Joking aside, KCR Radio has long been considered one of the nation’s top college radio stations. Its freeform music format has provided a launching pad for then undiscovered musical talents like the Police, the Clash, REM, Soundgarden and Nine Inch Nails. Despite changes in the way music is distributed and consumed, college radio is still considered a critically important platform for new, emerging, and alternative musical artists.
Meanwhile, scores of media and entertainment professionals got their start in the safe haven of KCR’s studios. Among them: Bryan Scott and Lisa Tucker, Emmy-award winning producers of Kathy Griffin: Life on the D-List; Emmy-winning San Diego radio host and television reporter Ken Kramer, one of KCR’s founders; Mort Marcus, co-president of Debmar-Mercury (South Park, House of Payne) and former Miramax and Disney executive; Wayne Hagen, broadcast voice of the New York Mets; St. Louis; Dave Drexler and Michael Berger, both nationally known voiceover talents; Flo Rogers, Program Director, Nevada Public Radio station KNPR; Kelli Cluque, Program Director, KCXX-FM, Lake Arrowhead, CA; Norb Gallery, National Public Radio senior producer; Phil Mastman, television director, Cincinnati, Ohio; Pat Martin, Program Director and longtime air personality at KRXQ-FM Radio (98 Rock), Sacramento and KGB-FM, San Diego; and Gayle Lynn Falkenthal, president of the Falcon Valley Group and talk show host at KCBQ-AM, San Diego.

Other notable KCR alumni include Ted Giannoulas, better known as the “San Diego Chicken;” Orange County Register political reporter Martin Wisckol; and San Diego Union-Tribune columnist Karla Peterson.

Sparked by the 35th Reunion, KCR alumni have raised money for new equipment and station support through individual donations and through the sales of a KCR-produced CD of original surf music, “Aztec Beach.”

Additional information and registration is available on the KCR Radio Reunion website at KCR Alumni, or on Facebook (search “KCR Radio Alumni”).

Since we didn’t beg for votes on the air or make some sort of ‘bit’ out of it like some shows… do (actually we didn’t even know it was going on), it made it cool to be recognized. Thanks again to those that voted for us…you’ve obviously got issues!” Visit them at WoodandWilcox.com.

The duo were previously at 760 KFMB and moved to New Mexico to buy several stations in the Clovis area. The co-owners have also hosted the morning show.
San Diego’s MEC Network, Inc. has announced that a simulcast of the nationally syndicated ESPN Radio sports talk programming and play-by-play will replace the BLAZIN’ “Hip Hop and More” music format on their XHMOR-FM 98.9 frequency effective 12:01 am on Monday, October 5.

In addition to the ESPN Radio regular sports talk programming line up that includes “Mike and Mike in the Morning” and the “The Herd with Colin Cowherd”, and “The Scott Van Pelt Show”, ESPN Radio San Diego - FM 98.9 and AM 800 will continue to broadcast ESPN’s Major League Baseball Game of the Week, MLB Playoffs, MLB World Series, NBA Game of the Week, NBA Playoffs, NBA Finals, ESPN College Football, The Bowl Championship Series, and various bowl games including the Poinsettia Bowl, and the Holiday Bowl on both stations.

ESPN Radio San Diego – FM 98.9 and AM 800 Programming and Operations Director Milton Hines says, “MEC Network is excited to put the ESPN brand on FM radio in the San Diego Market just in time for the start of the Major League Baseball Playoffs and World Series! With ESPN’s superior sports talk jocks along with the best play-by-play lineup in San Diego, now in crystal-clear FM, we look forward to ESPN Radio San Diego – FM 98.9 and AM 800 becoming the number one sports talk radio station in San Diego sooner rather than later!”

ESPN Radio San Diego - FM 98.9 and AM 800 will also broadcast NFL games from the Compass Media Network, American League baseball games from the defending AL West Champion Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Pac Ten Champion USC Trojans Football and UCLA Bruins Basketball.

ESPN Radio sports talk programming and play-by-play will now be available in San Diego on MEC Network’s XMOR-FM 98.9 and XSPN-AM 800 starting at midnight on Monday, October 5.

~~

The Broadcast Company of The Americas is pleased to announce the addition of Lee “Hacksaw” Hamilton to the talent lineup on Double X 1090 Sports Radio. Hamilton’s show will air Monday through Friday from 3pm to 7pm, beginning on Monday, October 5.

BCA Vice President of Programming/Operations Jack Evans says of the legendary San Diego sports figure;

“I guess my Mom did raise a fool! Maybe the second time around will be different. But, probably not.”

Hamilton is pleased to be back on center stage with former employers Evans and John Lynch.

“Afternoon drive sports-talk, a 50,000-watt signal, Padres baseball, and an all-star lineup. What a great combination. John Lynch created sport-stalk radio in San Diego, Jack Evans programmed it. It is great to re-link with them. It’s time to recreate the magic.”

BCA President and CEO John Lynch said, “I told Jack no, but apparently he didn’t hear me!” Lynch added, “Now that he is here, I remember vividly the day Hacksaw came to interview to become the play-by-play voice of the Chargers and introduce San Diego’s first sports talk station in 1987. He has been a central part of the San Diego sports scene ever since.”

Welcome back to the San Diego airwaves, Lee.

Tommy Sablan, Producer for the Jeff and Jer Showgram, attended the Emmy’s last Sunday. Tommy writes about his experience at JeffandJer.com. One of the highlights: “Alec Baldwin was walking out of the theater and two nice women approached him and said, “Hi Alec, can I get your autograph?” and Alec Baldwin swiftly replied to the two women, “GET AWAY FROM ME.” That is your special EMMY moment!”

The GelderHead Thought Of The Day: All achievements, all earned riches, have their beginning in an idea. ~~ Napoleon Hill - What is your idea?

Lee Hacksaw Hamilton and XX 1090 are expected to announce a deal today. He’ll take on the afternoon drive.

Associated with sports for a very long time in San Diego, Lee was last heard on Xtra Sports San Diego. He is also calling NFL games, also heard at ESPN 800 AM. Busy man, but that’s the way Lee has worked in the past.

Known for his quality sports report, Lee is very welcomed back to the airwaves.

Noted: ESPN 800 will simulcast on FM 98.9 starting in October. The co-owned station was previously an urban station. ESPN Radio will have the post season baseball, so this comes at good time.

~~

Rush Limbaugh, heard on KOGO and KFI has donated $500,000 to the Los Angeles medical institution. This was the place he credits with saving his hearing in 2001. The House Ear Institute received the donation in memory of tDr. Antonio De la Cruz. The doctor just passed away from complications of lymphoma on July 31, at age 65.

~~

Somebody at CBS radio woke up and saw the future. They have picked up Adam Corolla’s podcast and are sending it nationwide via many stations. Tagged as K-ACE, the program will have opportunities for CBS to sale.

The GelderHead Thought Of The Day: No matter how much cats fight, there always seem to be plenty of kittens. ~ Abraham Lincoln

GelderHead Productions, offering professional voice-over services to enhance business communications, announced today that it is spearheading the continued production of “Holiday Magic © 2009, a Gift for Children of all Ages,” a CD featuring music and a holiday tale that will be distributed to sick children at Children’s Hospital and their siblings. A number of singers and actors donated their talent for the CD, and funds are currently being solicited to cover the cost of production and ensure as many children as possible receive them.

Jeff Gelder, owner of GelderHead Productions, distributed 1500 CD’s to four hospitals in 2007 and 1500 CD’s to eight hospitals in 2008; he hopes to exceed that number this year and plans to “play Santa” in December at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego.

Donations are requested throughout the year. Checks of any denomination should be made out to GelderHead Productions (with Children’s Hospital CD Fund on the memo line) and sent to P.O. Box 3386, San Diego, CA 92163-3386, or donate via Paypal at www.HolidayMagicCD.com and click on “Make a Donation.”

Please call or email for 501c3 tax deductible donation details.

The tale on the CD is weaved by Jeffrey the Surfer Reindeer and Santa Claus as they make their way from the North Pole to visit the children. Along the way they meet Jeffrey’s cousin, Carlito, who lives at the Wild Animal Park. In 2007 we were introduced to Kate the adventurous teenage reindeer from Milwaukee, and every year there are new exciting characters.

The talent last year was remarkable, and included award winning actress and singer Nichelle Nichols (Lt. Uhura on Star Trek) and her talented sister Marian Michaels, Broadway actress Ashley Fox-Linton (from Del Mar, CA) and Sam Bass of KyXy 96.5fm. Listen to music clips online at www.HolidayMagicCD.com.

Other performers who generously lent their talent to the CD are singer, songwriter Karl Anthony, nationally acclaimed voice actors Connie Terwilliger and Donna Reed, Sony recording artist James Higgins, Kenny Wesley, AudioGirlProductions.com, and more. Microsoft manager and writer Mark Patterson penned the script, and professional speaker Phillip Tanzilo, voice actors Greg Dehm, Heather Martinez, and Gelder also of KyXy 96.5fm, plays Santa Claus, Carlito, Kate and Jeffrey the Reindeer respectively.

The first CD was produced six years ago, when Gelder was tasked in a Landmark Education class to come up with a project that would enhance the community and ultimately take on a life of its own. That’s just what has happened, as Gelder now fields many inquiries about the CD all year long. “This year we hope to once again have CD’s for Children’s Hospital’s in San Diego, Milwaukee, Miami, Albuquerque, Orange County, New Orleans, Houston, and New York and we’ve had requests from other hospitals around the country.

For every $3.00 donation a child will receive a CD of their own,” says Gelder. “This is a labor of love that is received with much joy by children who are unfortunately spending the holiday season in the hospital and their siblings, who often crave attention due to so much being given to the ailing member of their family,” Gelder said. “We appreciate all donations! The more donations the more children that will be receiving a CD.”

About GelderHead Productions

GelderHead Productions offers professional voice-over and/or on-camera talent for commercials, narration, and spokesperson or emcee needs. Owner Jeff Gelder believes in giving back to the community, thus he is proud to produce a holiday CD that is distributed free to children who are confined to the Hospital during the most festive time of the year.
Personal note: I’m 52-years old today; and it is indeed, a very happy birthday. For those keeping score at home, I’m as recovered as I can be from a pedestrian vs. car of nearly five year ago. It was that close; and I don’t mind having birthdays anymore — and more importantly, I look both ways thrice … before crossing a street. See you on the radio today, breaking news when it happens, enjoy the day.
