Lee Hacksaw Hamilton has hit a home run, scored a touchdown, and made a GOOOOOOOOAAAAAALLLL this week. He has been filling in the morning show at XX Sports 1090. Lee’s been missing from the local airwaves, but has been busy on Sirius/XM Satellite radio and is one of the voices of the new football network this fall. Here’s hoping that there is room in the budget and schedule to have Lee back on the San Diego sports waves full time.

New appreciation for Cookie Chainsaw Randolph at 101.5 KGB. There’s a group of long time radio fans that take drink shots of espresso every time Chain says Jack Baurer on a reference to 24 comes up. The jitters last until lunch.

Thank you for stopping by this week, full report for a Friday early tomorrow morning. See YOU on the radio, and in ((stereo)) where available.

Update: The memorial service for Helmut Kerling is 3 p.m. on Sunday. The time was previously noted earlier. The service is open and will be at St. David’s Episcopal Church 5050 Milton St., San Diego, 92110

More family pets will run away from home on the 4th of July than during any other day of the year because of fireworks. Helen Woodward Animal Center encourages families to take a few simple precautions to make sure that their pets are safe during Independence Day fireworks celebrations.

HWAC spokesman John Van Zante says, “Even if the fireworks are several miles away, the sound can terrify family pets. If they don’t have safe places to hide, or if there’s a way for them to run out a door or escape through a fence, your pet will be gone.”

HWAC offers a few suggestions for families to keep their pets safe this week.

*	Do not take your pets along to the fireworks displays.
*	Bring your pets indoors before fireworks displays begin.
*	Make sure that your pets have access to their favorite “safe place” or find a quiet, comfortable, enclosed room where your pets can “hide” if they need to.
*	If you go to a fireworks display and leave your pets at home alone, leave the radio or TV set on so there is some “normal” background noise.

“This is also a great time to make sure your pets are micro-chipped.” says Van Zante. “Many pets that run away during the fireworks escape by slipping out of their collars. A micro-chip will identify your pet if it ends up at a shelter.”

What if your pet escapes in spite of your efforts? “Search through your neighborhood right away…then keep it up. Don’t quit after a day or two. Check with the animal shelters and keep checking for several weeks. You can also post signs in your neighborhood, but the best thing to do is to make sure your pets never get out to begin with.”

For more information call Helen Woodward Animal Center at 858-756-4117 or visit the Center at 6461 El Apajo Road. For the location of all animal shelters in San Diego log on to www.animalcenter.org.

The adoptions department at Helen Woodward Animal Center will be open
regular hours…11 am to 6 pm…on the 4th of July.

Email from friends and fan’s of Gary Cocker are below. If you would like to contribute, please send an email to chris@sdradio.net:

I get this strange image of Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett, Michael Jackson and Gary Cocker all in some kind of staging area. The threesome are pointing toward Gary asking…who’s the guy with the headphones..they’re soon to be exposed to one of the true personality people in broadcasting..when you know someone like Cocker for over 30 years and they’re suddenly not there anymore..a super void is the experience…i think i can speak for Norman Flint and myself when i say we are not taking Garys’ passing well at all…it is a friendship that has been cut drastically short.”

So sad to hear about Gary! I remember how he used to keep the Coors can hidden out of sight behind the cart machines at 13K. Like “Dr. Johnny Fever” he seemed to actually get funnier on the air the more he imbibed. Unfortunately, like Radio Brother John Leslie, that “endearing trait” became a personal hellhole. For all the Demons, there was an enormous natural talent and a truly unique voice that was the envy of all pop-music jocks of the day.

Now heard Mornings on KGOD. Via Con Dios, mi Amigo!

Thanks for putting up the Gary Cocker stuff.

I first met Gary right after his second bout with rehab back in 1992 at KCBQ FM. I was just newbie looking for direction in Radio and found my mentor sitting in a studio reading a book. Within a moment, he turned on his mic, did his spiel and went back to reading his book and sipping his coffee. I said to myself, now that’s a real pro, I think I can learn a thing or two from this guy. The first words out his mouth to me was, “Hey man, you got an extra smoke?” At that point, I realized and said to him “Holy cow, you’re the channel six guy” and he said “Well man that gig is over, so you gotta smoke?” I remember Gary for his dry sense of humor, articulation, wit, loyalty, a one of a kind voice, and most of all a true friend.

I saw Gary a few weeks ago in the hospital, the man was a WARRIOR He stated he was going to be alright and that this will too pass. We didn’t talk about the illness because he was more focused on his future and what he was going to do when he felt better, and that’s the man’s spirit and what kind of a man he was.

I truly miss him, and I loved him like a brother and I got a chance to say that to him before he passed.

Tony Morrison AKA Tony Morgan did mornings at KPRI, mornings at KBNN, and now is a Realtor in Orange/San Diego County.

~~
I am so truly sadden by the passing of Gary as so many who knew him are. I had the privilege of working with this talented wonderful man, and knowing him as a true radio brother to me at KCBQ in the mid 80’s.. We have all lost a great, great friend.
