This Fall, ESPN Films launched a documentary series called “30 for 30“, a collection of 30 sports documentaries by 30 filmakers in celebration of ESPN’s 30th Anniversary of existence (ESPN was founded in 1979).

It is truly a perfect mix of sports, entertainment, and media as each of these elements have been brought together to present truly intriguing sports tales.

I initially saw commercials about “30 for 30″ leading up to the initial show on October 6th, 2009, and to be honest, I didn’t have any intention of marking my calendar to watch it. I thought about all the other primetime TV shows that I might be more interested in spending my time watching.

However, as I was flipping channels one evening, I came across the first in this series of 30 stories, “King’s Ransom“, the gripping story behind the trade of Wayne Gretzky from the Edmonton Oilers to the L.A. Kings, and the repercussions that it had across the National Hockey League, fans, teams, and owners closely involved with the situation — not too mention Gretzky himself.

Needless to say: I was incapable of changing the channel to something else. It was far too interesting.

Story after story, “30 for 30″ has increasingly been more and more engaging to watch. Each story has revealed the power of sports, entertainment, and media in our lives, and how emotionally invested many of us are in these areas.

Kudos to those involved with the production of this series.

I’ve heard recent opinions that October was actually the best month for sports. The reasons given for this by TV sports experts was due to the World Series, the start of the NBA and NHL seasons, the latter stages of the College Football season and BCS discussion, and because the NFL was in full effect.

With all these reasons given, I sat back and said, “those are strong arguments as to why October was the best month — guess it’s no longer just about Halloween anymore” …
