Think Fast 2010

This weekend several of our parish youth are participating in Think Fast. A 25 hour fast to raise money for Development & Peace. Please keep them in your prayers; they will also be collecting pledges after Mass.

First Confession

Our grade 2 students preparing for their First Holy Communion will be having their first Confession this Thursday, please keep them in their prayers.

Easter Lilies

If you would like to donate an Easter lily to help decorate to Church, please bring it to the office between Monday, March 29th and Thursday, April 4th. We will have special dedication cards to placed on the bulletin board for those who would like to donate their lily in memory of a loved one.

Life Is Precious -Let Us Stand Up For Life

On Monday March 15^th at 7:00 pm – 9:30 pm at St. Francis de Sales in church hall we are having a pro – life meeting, open to all parishioners in our parish and neighboring parishes. Knights of Columbus

Pennies for Heaven drive starts this weekend of March 6^th & 7^th. Proceeds will support the seminarian program in BC. The Knights will also be conducting their membership drive. Forms and brochures can be found in the entrance of the church. Feel free to speak to a representative after Mass.

CWL General Meeting

Irish Tea

Celebrate the feast of St. Patrick, Patron Saint of Ireland. The great saint to the Irish – and all those who want to be Irish for a day! Come join us at a delicious Irish tea hosted by the de Sales deaf ministry. Sunday, March 14^th following the 9:00 am and 11:00 am Masses in the church hall. Door prizes for all ages including a special prize, a gift basket packed with a Touch of the emerald isle. Tickets are available at the entrance of the church. Adults $5 / Children $2, 3 yrs & younger are free.

Coffee Break Woman’s Bible Study

Coffee Break women’s Bible study will resume after the Olympic break on Wednesday, March 3rd. At that time we will have our new books, “My Soul Magnifies the Lord”, a Scriptural Journey with Mary, available for purchase. The books for this 10 week course will cost $11.50. 2009 Tax Receipts

This weekend is your only chance to pick up receipts before they are mailed. Please pick up your tax receipt located at the entrance of the church. This will save us money on postage. If you have any questions or concerns about your receipt please contact the parish office.

K of C Pancake Breakfast

10th Annual Thinkfast

 All Youth from grades 8 – 12 are invited to join ThinkFast on the weekend of March 13^th & 14^th. ThinkFast is a 21 hour fast-a-thon where we will be raising funds for countries in the global south. There will be fun games and activities to deepen our awareness about hunger in the world. No Cost to join. Invite a friend! Registration forms can be found at the entrance of the church.

ThinkFast Preparation Meeting

Volunteers are needed for our annual ThinkFast. Young adults are encouraged to volunteer. High school students are able to receive service hours for participating. Our next meeting is on Friday, February 26^th from 4:30 – 7 pm in the church basement meeting room. Preparations for Lent

Palms for Ash Wednesday

Please bring in your old palms before Tuesday, February 16^th so that we can burn them to use for ashes. You may drop them off at the entrance of the church or bring them to the parish office.

Fast and Abstain On Upcoming Holy Days

The Church prescribes fasting (only one full meal and two smaller meals which together are not greater than a full meal) and abstinence from meat on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Catholics aged 18 – 59 are bound to fast; those 14 – 59 to abstinence. Those who are ill are freed from these obligations. Everyone, even those above the age of 59, are encouraged to fast and abstain. Parents and educators are reminded of their duty to introduce children gradually to the understanding and practice of penance.

First Communion Enrolment Mass

This weekend during the 9:00 am Mass we will acknowledge our grade 2 students who are preparing to receive their First Holy Communion this April. Please keep them and their families in your prayers.

CWL Membership Drive

 CWL representatives will be available after all Mass’s this weekend January 30^th and 31^st. We are asking members to renew their memberships and are inviting all ladies of the parish to join us. The annual membership fee is $20 and can be paid by cash or cheque. Cheques are preferable and can be made payable to St. Francis de Sales Parish CWL. Feast of the Presentation of the Lord

February 2^nd Blessing of Candles Also called Candlemas, or the ‘Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary.’ In accordance with Mosaic Law, Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple for circumcision and to be offered to God. Jesus is the light of the world, so this day is a feast of light. It is a custom that candles for use in the Church throughout the year are solemnly blessed. Often a procession of the faithful carries the wondrous light of newly blessed candles to every corner of the church. The gospel reading from Luke describes how Jesus is recognized as the long awaited Messiah by the prophets Simeon and Anna. Simeon calls Jesus a ‘light for all nations’ that will bring ‘honor to your people Israel”. You may bring you own candles from home to be blessed on Tuesday at the 8:15 am or 7:30 pm Masses.

Feast of St. Blaise, February 3^rd

St. Blaise was a doctor as well as a bishop in Armenia during the fourth century. It is believed that Blaise once healed a boy who was choking on a fish bone. Because of that, he is the patron of the sick, especially people with illnesses of the throat. It is an ancient custom to pray for good health with a blessing of throats on his feast day. We will have a blessing of throats on February 3^rd at the 8:15 Mass. All are welcome to attend.

Bagging Candy for Agape Street Ministries

Friday, February 5^th  Come out and join Youth Ministry in charity work! We will be bagging candies for Agape Street Ministries. Agape then hands out the bagged candies to those living on the streets. Each bag of candy includes a prayer card. All youth from grades 6 – 12 are invited to help. Location is in the church basement from 5:30 – 7:00 pm. Hope to see you there!  

Volunteers Needed For Our Annual ThinkFast

March 13^th & 14^th  Youth Ministry is looking for senior youth from grades 9 – 12, young adults, and chaperones to help with this year’s ThinkFast. Our ThinkFast during Lent is a 21 hour fast-a-thon which helps raise funds and awareness of economical and environmental challenges faced by impoverished countries in the Global South. Senior youth and young adults would choose fun and educational activities prepared by CCODP and implement these activities with direction from your Youth Ministry Coordinator. Spiritual activities to be lead are a living rosary and Stations of the Cross. We would also be collecting donations from parishioners at two Mass times, 5:00 pm and 9:00 am. At the end of the fast, we will partake in a solidarity meal with our families and friends. We are looking for at least 20 senior youth & young adults to lead these activities. Earthquake Relief Efforts

The tragedy of a large earthquake in Haiti – the western hemisphere’s poorest nation – has caused the Archdiocese of Vancouver to raise funds for the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace (CCODP) to assist the earthquake victims of Haiti. Early news stories report devastation and widespread loss of life. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected by the by the earthquakes in Haiti, especially to the families of those who have lost loved ones,” said Most Rev. Archbishop J. Michael Miller, CSB, Archbishop of Vancouver. “This is a tragedy of cataclysmic proportions and I encourage all who are able to give generously through reliable agencies such as CCODP. I myself have visited Haiti in the past and can witness to the enormous need.” All donations received by CCODP will be sent directly to their partners in Haiti, mainly Caritas Haiti. CCODP has already committed a first pledge of $50,000 to Caritas Haiti, which runs 200 medical clinics in the country, and is in urgent need of funding to meet the needs of those affected by this disaster. Some 80 percent of the population lives below the poverty line. This disaster will increase the already difficult situation for the people of Haiti. The earthquake registered 7.0 on the Richter scale and was centered approximately 14 miles west of the capital city, Port-au-Prince. Youth Events

Skate Night

Friday, January 22^nd  we’ll be skating at 8 Rinks in Burnaby from 8:00 – 9:15 pm. Come join us! Everyone welcome to attend. Group registration with Youth Ministry has passed however if your son or daughter would like to attend and is not registered with us, please accompany him/her as we can not guarantee chaperoning for youth not registered with our group. We suggest you get there at least half an hour before skating starts since there’s a line up to pay the fees and it gives you time to put your gear on. Cost is $4.50 for skate time, $3.00 for skate rental, and $2.00 for helmet rental.   

Snack & 5 Pin Bowling Night

Friday, January 29^th  all junior youth in grades 6 – 8 are invited to our snack and bowling night at Lucky Strike Lanes. Deadline for registration is THIS Friday, January 22nd. All information is on the registration forms which can be found on the bulletin board at the entrance of the church. Cost is $5 per youth. We have a limited amount of registration spots and it will be first come, first served. No last minute registrations forms will be accepted on the day of the event since we cannot guarantee a spot. We pre-book the lanes in advance.

On January 16^th & 17^th, please welcome Deacon Ron Jenkins who will speak about CHALICE – a Canadian, Catholic sponsorship program. He will explain how you can help a destitute child at one of 48 mission sites in 15 developing countries. The website is www.chalice.ca

Gym Roof Fundraiser

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to our fundraiser for our new gym roof. We still have a ways to go. I encourage everyone to unite as a parish and make this a successful fundraiser. The envelopes are at the back of the church. Please fill out the label clearly so that we can give you an income tax receipt which will now be for 2010 taxation year.

Youth Events

Our Youth Ministry Bottle Drive is this weekend on January 2nd & 3rd, fifteen minutes before and half an hour after all Masses. We are only accepting recyclable bottles and aluminum cans that can be cashed to help support our events for the year. Please no milk cartons or dairy product containers.  

Open Gym

Jr. & Sr. Youth Open Gym, Friday, January 16th in the school gym. Jr. Youth from 6:00 – 7:30 pm and Sr. Youth from 7:30 – 9:00 pm. Please bring a tooney donation to cover the cost of snacks.

Christ Is Here!

Today and throughout the Christmas Season we celebrate the presence of Christ amongst us, not as a foreign being but as one of us. Christ’s coming changes everything! We are now united to his family. The family of man and the family of God are united in an everlasting bond. Within this little Child is the union of the divine and human natures. When we unite ourselves to him we share in all the benefits that our union with God entails that is all the promises of Christ. As we celebrate with joy this momentous event let us ponder what it entails for mankind and how this great gift of love from God impacts our personal life. Both Fr. Barreto and I wish you all the love Christ wants to pour into your life this season and throughout the year. Know that you will be remembered in our Christmas Masses and in our prayers. Immediate Job Opening

Our school is in need of a playground supervisor Monday – Friday from Noon – 1:00 pm. This position will start right away. If you are interested please contact Mrs. McLaren, the school Principal at 604-435-5311.

Fundraiser for Our New Gym Roof is on Its Way

Special envelopes for this fundraising are at the back of the church and can be placed in the regular collection. Join in with the whole parish as we come together to complete this project. Our gym roof over the past year has begun to leak requiring repairs several times. The roof is past its life expectance and needs to be replaced before the gym floor is damaged or other water damage occurs. Our gym is not only used by our students, but is also used for our larger parish events. We obtained three estimates and have obtained permission from the Archbishop to go ahead with the project, which will begin in February 2010. The replacement cost will be approximately $50,000 dollars. We do have moneys from our capital expenditure fund from the school which will be used for the project, but this will only cover a small part of the cost. The balance will have to be paid by the parish.

St Vincent de Paul – Christmas Hampers 2009

Last weekend we took your Spirit of Christmas to 48 needy families who expressed heartfelt gratitude and joy for their Hampers and Gifts. The St Vincent de Paul executive would like to acknowledge the following:

Ready, Set, Learn Workshop

This workshop will be offered to the parents of 3 year olds and also 4 year olds (since last year’s event was cancelled). The workshop will be held on January 19^th in the church basement from 12:45 pm – 3:00 pm. Child minding will be available in the school Activity Room from 12:30 pm – 3:00 pm and Pre-school will open early at 12:30 pm that day ONLY. Installation of Our Pastor

This Sunday, Archbishop Miller will be officially installing Rev. Thomas Smith as our new pastor during the 11:00 am Mass. There will be a reception following Mass in the church hall. Please join us.

A Season of Rejoicing – Special Invitation

The staff and students of St. Francis de Sales School would like to extend a special invitation to our community of parishioners! You are invited to our rehearsal performance of this year’s Christmas Concert. Wednesday, December 16^th at 10:45 am in the church.

Christmas Eve Pageant

The evening Mass at 6:00 pm Christmas Eve is a special liturgy for families. The Children’s Choir sings and other children of our parish are invited to take part in a dramatization of the Gospel. The children will take part in non-speaking roles as Joseph, Mary, Angel Gabriel, Angels, Shepherds, Innkeepers and Wise Men. Older children will be narrators and lectors. If your child would like to participate in the Gospel dramatization on Christmas Eve at 6:00, please pick up a form on the bulletin board fill in the form below and return it either to the school office or the parish office. Fundraiser for Our New Gym Roof –Begins Today

Our gym roof over the past year has begun to leak requiring repairs several times. The roof is past its life expectance and needs to be replaced before the gym floor is damaged or other water damage occurs. Our gym is not only used by our students, but is also used for our larger parish events. We obtained three estimates and have obtained permission from the Archbishop to go ahead with the project, which will begin in February 2010. The replacement cost will be approximately $50,000 dollars. We do have moneys from our capital expenditure fund from the school which will be used for the project, but this will only cover a small part of the cost. The balance will have to be paid by the parish. As was announced last weekend special envelopes are in the pews and at the back of the church, they can be placed in the regular collection. There are 1800 families in our parish community and we are looking forward to everyone coming together to be a part of our parish gym roof replacement project.

CWL Christmas Dinner

The annual CWL Christmas party will be held on Thursday, December 10th. Tickets will be sold at the breakfast and at all Masses December 5th & 6th, the cost is $12. All women are welcome to attend.

Installation of Our Pastor

Archbishop J. Michael Miller will be officially installing Fr. Smith as our pastor on December 13th at the 11:00 am Mass.

Advent Penitential Services

Our Parish Penitential Service will take place on December 18th at 7:00 pm. If you are unable to attend please feel free to attend another service in our Deanery.
