So You've Decided To Go Mobile

Deciding to go mobile usually involves a choice between two strategies: mobile web or native apps. What is right for you will depend upon the goals of your organization. Before looking at the advantages and disadvantage each has, let's define the two terms in the simplest way. A mobile web app is a website specifically modified to be optimized for the smaller screens, and in many cases the limited capabilities of, a mobile phone's browser. A native app is a fully customizable application that runs “natively” on the phone (a downloaded app). Now, let's take a look at the advantages and disadvantages that each provide.

Cloud Security Alliance: The Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) is a not-for-profit organization with a mission to promote the use of best practices for providing security assurance within Cloud Computing, and to provide education on the uses of Cloud Computing to help secure all other forms of computing. The Cloud Security Alliance is led by a broad coalition of industry practitioners, corporations, associations and other key stakeholders.

Speaker: Dr. James Parrish, Putting Students Head's in the Cloud while Keeping their Feet on the Ground

Cloud computing is becoming an increasingly important part of the IT strategies of organizations. However, few higher education institutions are actively working to educate students about cloud computing and to prepare them for careers in an IT landscape where required knowledge of cloud computing is becoming more the rule than the exception. This presentation will discuss the efforts of Nova Southeastern University's Graduate School of Computer and Information Sciences to fill this void through the creation of two new graduate certificate programs in cloud computing and an investment in facilities to support the education of the next generation of cloud computing professionals.

allAware Releases Slick New Mobile Donations App

allAware, the free mobile social network for nonprofit organizations, announced today the release of their new and improved iPhone and Android mobile apps. “The new apps are a complete rewrite from our first release,” said Jason Milgram, founder of Linxter, Inc., the creators of allAware. “We improved the mobile app user experience by creating a more streamlined interface, with more stability and increased functionality”.

The allAware app, announced May 29th of this year, available at http://allAware.com has grown in use from 35 nonprofits to over 135. It’s a free app, designed to improve communication and member involvement. allAware allows organizations to jump into the mobile app world and engage with their membership in new ways, all without having to invest money in new technology.

"A great part about working on a free app is the ease of getting it into the hands of customers,” stated Ryan Parsley, Director of UX at Linxter. “allAware was pretty rough and ready when we started asking people to check it out. Comments from customers were invaluable in structuring the interface so it's optimized for how people actually want to use it.”

Social networks will continue to evolve, providing exciting new functionality. Older networks will need to keep up with the changes while newer networks will need to quickly differentiate themselves. The end result being there are a number of great mobile social network options out there for your organization, and if you don’t have one now, your organization should come up with its mobile strategy soon.

What is the Mobile Social Wallet?

What has not been discussed much is the role of mobile wallet technology and not-for-profit organizations, and the tremendous benefits this can bring. Non-profit organizations are not just sellers of goods and services, they have stories to tell, share culture, share faith, share ideals, and illuminate the public about causes. In other words, they foster a sense of community not only in the areas with which they work, but also with those who decide to join.
