"In a return to the phenomena of cargo cults and nature-worship, Simon Pericich introduces us to ‘a harbinger for a planet obsessed with a shiny greener future.’¹² Dressed in a faux-Nike jacket and with a face composed mostly of weeds, this scarecrow-of-tat bears little genetic relation to the ironic currents found in similar photographic works by Simryn Gill or Christian Thompson; rather, The Bastard Saint of Meritocracy (weedhead) is pure B-grade mock-horror, invoking Scream or Freddie Kruger. It is also grimly humorous, covered with crap bits of bling and splattered with discarded glitter, as if this innocent ghoul has just emerged from the leftovers of a consumer party gone way, way wrong. Pericich’s pet theme – ‘the colonisation of surface’¹³ – continues into the salvaged camouflage advertising backdrop, alluding to the idea that plants are not the only weeds. Culture itself can be just as insidious... "

When there are so many legitimate problems in the world, and your not sure which one to speak out about, instead of writing a giant protest banner which reads, ‘say no to right wing fascist dolphin killing, tree logging, capo, racist, child molestering, gene altering, nuclear power plants elitist drunk and drug fuelled immigrants who steal our jobs and have same sex intercourse etc ect’ why not build a multiuse protest float which caters to everybody’s needs? The car used in this work is a Humber, which is the type of car the politicians and royalty were chauffeured around in back in the early years of Australia. This work is a epitaph and monument to an archaic and no longer effective mechanism of social change.

We live in an age where we can't take sunscreen on a plane because of fear that it may be weapon. Simon Pericich comments on these and other recent global paranoias with a display of over 70 hysterical renditions of dangerous looking artworks crudely yet obsessively fashioned out of common house-hold objects. The overwhelming arsenal for an imagined futuristic army keeps us hilariously safe from unknown benevolent forces, reminding viewers 'everything really isn't that bad'.

Made from melted garbage bags and coated in glitter, these cloud like units are designed to parasitically fit into any space and any formation. in this image they are inflated via one hairdryer but are even more effective when connected onto existing air conditioning vents as seen in a show at MIR11, grad show & National University of Singapore.

2007 DENSITY OF DARKNESS 'Gertrude Artists' Group Show'

Made through a process of destruction, a large recycled wooden object is repeatedly re-designed to cater for a reticulation system and fluoro lights to allow found weeds to grow. This is done via a series of ‘quick-fix’ solutions. The object eventually destroys itself- [the lights blow, the reticulation system is blocked by an outbreak of water snails, the weeds die, the reticulation system leaks.] the sculpture is embellished and customized heavily with trinkets and stickers including containers made from melted drink bottles.

from the catalog essay by and curated by daine singer: 'In Simon Pericich's performance, sad little prick, an extreme of physical suffering is used as an expression of insecurity and fear of inadequacy and rejection. Immersing himself in an ice bath for 40 minutes, Pericich worked to see just how tiny his penis could become. The action combined a feat of physical endurance with a purpose that inverted the shame many men feel regarding penis size. This performance formed the basis of the exhibited work: Sad little prick, a plaster cast of Pericich's genitalia, and a mounted video camera through which visitors can view video stills from the performance.

The work is funny, but it is also laden with pathos, as well as an undeniable voyeuristic (and sadistic) thrill at watching his suffering. We are transfixed by the comedy of his tragedy, but also form a sympathetic bond with a young man wanting to hurt himself so deliberately. There is an undeniable sado-masochistic element to the work, made more apparent with the knowledge that the artist's recent ex-girlfriend filmed the performance. Pericich has described the sadness and guilt he felt at the end of this relationship, and the work can be read as a cathartic exercise in ameliorating this pain.'

(First done in collaboration with Ben Waters). A keg of the most alcoholic home-brew beer (made by the artists) was wheeled in and handed out for free at the Fremantle Passenger Terminal Commercial Art Fair 02. This pirate ‘event’ was eventually closed down (without a legitimate reason why) to the dismay of the happy punters who all got happily drunk.

This performance/event was later repeated at Kurb Gallery 02, VCA 06, Spectrum 07.

Originally a billboard advertising Maxfactor™ which was later stolen by the artist, digitally manipulated, cropped and reprinted onto the original vinyl with text inclusion. The work was hung loose on the gallery wall with two large nails, in a show 'dark portraiture' PCP and also the debut show for Shifted Gallery, Richmond Melbourne. 1.5 x 3 m

DOOOM ISLAND is a fictitious land rendered in glitter on black plastic. It contains: all the things your mum ever warned you about and everything you see on the news that makes you not want to get out of bed.
This work was done as part of the ◳ PRINTMAKING SUMMER RESIDENCY 06. Some copies on archival paper are available at project space gallery, RMIT. This show curated by Richard HARDING. this work was later shown as part of the SILVER @ PICA.

2006 LOST DOG

LOST DOG. 101 replica cardboard dogs were ‘lost’ around the streets of Melbourne two days before the show at WESTSPACE gallery- At the same time, about 500 ‘lost dog posters’ where posted all over the city. Within hours the phone was running hot regarding sightings of the ‘lost dogs’. All the text messages and conversations where transcribed onto the gallery wall. People where invited to bring the dogs to the gallery. The story became a rumour. The dogs appeared at parties and in shops.

This was part of a show called Super Structure, curated by Christine Morrow.

All entries will be shown at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA) as part of the PAPER exhibition (6 July - 6 August) and we the public vote for our favourite - so beg/borrow a camera and start filming.
Entries close 6 June so make haste!
Drop/post your edited film (on mini dv tape) AND a photo of the star AND your name and contact details AND a brief description of what happens in the film to PICA : attention SIMON PERICICH (the coordinating artist)

-all entries were then displayed on a customized display table and the public voted for their favourite entry. At the conclusion of the show, in a nearby pub the ‘best of’ and winning entry, with the most votes= (by Michelle Siciliano) was announced.

2006 TEEN SPIRIT

A stack of recent popular magazines, coke can, concealed mobile phone or video camera with small screen, speakers, video component = 1min;42 looped. A video of Kurt Cobain whistling the chorus of Smells Like Teen Spirit edited from three seconds of film clips (slowed down and heavily post produced shitily) appears hauntingly from the bottom of the coke™ can. This work was shown in a slightly darkened space.

2006 EMPTY ORCHESTRA

Wrapped in plastic, this fully functional Karaoke machine has a loud 40-minute loop mash made from nokia™ ring tones. The ring tones selected are the most ‘recognizable’ choruses from grunge and rock anthems of the 90’s. The lyrics appeared on the T.V in a hand made animation and the words where recited from my memory of what the lyrics should/could be. Audience members where invited up on the stage to sing-along however the dramatic cuts between the tracks coupled with the sometimes inaccurate lyrics created gruelling and comic effects.

‘EMPTY ORCHESTRA’ is a translation of the word, ‘karaoke’
