The award’s purpose is to recognize the outstanding book in information science published during the preceding calendar year. The award is given to the author(s) whose book is judged to have made the most outstanding contribution in the field of information science during the year.

As noted in the nomination, the book "In this ambitious and meticulously researched volume, Acker traces the emergence of data archives from their origins in pre-digital scientific and academic collections to their current incarnation as privately owned, "born networked" resources managed via mobile apps and proprietary platforms. Archiving Machines shows how the societal value and traditional power of archives has collided with the fast-moving, profit-driven logic of contemporary digital platforms. The book moves between these sites with remarkable fluency, revealing the deep historical continuities that connect punch cards and magnetic tape to the infrastructures that now govern how we store, access, and use information."

Upon learning of the book’s selection as the ASIS&T 2026 Best Information Science Book of the Year, author Amelia Acker said “I am thrilled to receive this recognition from ASIS&T. Archiving Machines brings questions from archival science, computing history and contemporary information science together, so it is honor to have the book recognized by colleagues in our truly interdisciplinary field. I am grateful for the award and excited to continue these conversations.”

Since 1980, this annual award has honored the unique teaching contributions of exceptional teachers of information science.

Sanfilippo is an Assistant Professor at the School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She joined the faculty of the School of Information Sciences in 2020 and has compiled an impressive record of contributions to teaching information science at the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levels since that time. Her teaching responsibilities encompass two established required courses (IS 202 Social Aspects of Information Technology for BS in Information Sciences students and IS 504 Sociotechnical Information Systems for MS in Information Management students) and two elective courses that she designed and introduced into the curriculum (IS 390 Principles and Practice of Data Governance for undergraduate students and IS 524 Data Governance for graduate students).

In her nomination letter, Linda C. Smith, Professor Emerita at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, echoed a PhD alumnus who said, “Professor Sanfilippo’s record reflects the core values of this award: excellence, innovation, sustained impact, and leadership in information science education. Her contributions have shaped students, advanced scholarship, and strengthened the broader academic community.” Another PhD student stated that “despite having over ten years of professional experience as a knowledge manager in international development, Dr. Sanfilippo’s teaching enabled me to identify critical gaps and new opportunities in how information science engages collaboration across universities, communities, governments, and international development sectors.”

Upon learning of her selection as the 2026 ASIS&T Outstanding Information Science Teacher Award winner, Sanfilippo said, “This means so much, and it is humbling to be included with the illustrious list of past recipients! I care deeply for our students and spend a lot of time and energy trying to help them grow as creative and critical thinkers, future professionals, and engaged members of a society that is increasingly sociotechnical. I am so grateful to have that impact acknowledged and that the students support this recognition.”

Sanfilippo was selected as the winner from among a pool of outstanding candidates who were judged based on these criteria: evidence of sustained and unique contributions to teaching information science; impact on students, colleagues, and institutions; innovative and imaginative teaching materials and methods; professional association activities related to teaching excellence; research activities related to teaching excellence; and previous teaching awards.

Sanfilippo will receive the award during the 2026 meeting of ASIS&T which will be held 6-10 November 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand.

In nominating Wagner for this award, Linda C. Smith, Professor Emerita, said “Travis Wagner’s exemplary accomplishments as a relatively new member of ASIS&T should serve as inspiration to other new members on how they can become involved and contribute.”

Upon learning of their selection as winner of the award, Wagner responded, “I feel incredibly honored to be receiving the James M. Crestos Leadership Award. While I know it is an award for leadership, I believe that ASIS&T thrives on collaboration, and my work in the organization reflects the guidance, support, and hard work of many others. In particular, I would like to thank the awards committee, the folks who wrote letters of support for me, and those who nominated me for the award. Since joining ASIS&T, I have found the community of scholars both deeply supportive and critically engaged, and my desire to be involved has always been about expanding what we can do as a field. I do my best to always bring to ASIS&T research and service that I wanted to see when I was a new member of the community, and I hope this award is a signal to others that ASIS&T is a place that welcomes new ideas, new methods, and new community members with open arms.”

Wagner will receive the award during the 2026 meeting of ASIS&T which will be held 6-10 November 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand.

The Association for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T) is delighted to announce that Katherine Knight has been selected as the 2026 recipient of the Pratt Severn Best Student Research Paper Award. The purpose of the award is to encourage student research and writing in the field of information science.

Knight’s paper entitled, “Librarians, not lawyers: a qualitative study of the perceptions and experiences of librarians facilitating legal research to foreign national prisoners in English prisons” was selected from among a pool of outstanding candidates who were judged based on criteria including: technical competence in information science; significance of information science findings; originality; clarity of expression; compliance with JASIST instructions; style; and organization.

Katherine is currently an Assistant Librarian at Hertford College, Oxford and has completed her Master’s degree in Library and Information Studies at University College London. Her focus is in prison librarianship. She was initially drawn towards prison librarianship as an area in which information is both highly restricted and sought after. A two-week work placement in a foreign-national only prison library in April 2024 led her to consider research at the intersection of three areas: the legal information needs of prisoners in general, the information needs of foreign national prisoners in particular, and the experience of prison librarians in facilitating information provision.

Upon learning of her selection as the winner of the 2026 Pratt Severn Best Student Research Paper Award, Knight said, “I am delighted to have been selected for this year’s ASIS&T Pratt Severn Award. My research occurred at the intersection of several very different and context-dependent areas of information theory, and I would like to thank the jury for engaging with my work so thoroughly. I am also very grateful to my supervisor Dr. Meg Westbury and UCL in supporting me in pursuing this vital area of library research, and to all in the prison library community who shared their experiences with me throughout this research project.”

Knight will receive the award during the 2026 meeting of ASIS&T which will be held 6-10 November 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand.

The Association for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T) is delighted to announce that Kate McDowell will receive the 2026 ASIS&T Research Impact Award sponsored by Rutgers University. The award makes more visible the dimensions of the societal contribution of Information Science and provides role models and examples for new scholars wishing to translate research into practical benefits for others. The award shapes and nourishes information science as a discipline by encouraging future research that has important impact. This, in turn, supports researchers’ career development, as impact is highly valued by academic institutions and governments when assessing research contributions and research quality.

Kate McDowell is a Professor at the School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and received the ASIS&T Outstanding Information Science Teacher Award in 2022. She is a leading scholar in information science whose work pioneers the use of storytelling as a core form of information, especially in helping libraries communicate their value. She developed the widely adopted Data Storytelling Toolkit for Libraries (DSTL), which has reached thousands of users across more than 50 countries and transformed how library professionals use data for advocacy and impact. The Data Storytelling Toolkit for Libraries distills the hard-won wisdom embedded in decades of library justification stories into a free, openly accessible online resource that any library worker can use with their own data. It is organized around three modules — audience, narrative, and motivations/goals — built from qualitative analysis of over 100 interviews conducted since 2015. The toolkit is not a template. It is a structured invitation for library workers to find their own stories, rooted in their own communities, and tell them with both accuracy and meaning. Overall, Kate’s research bridges theory and practice through influential publications, including her JASIST work on storytelling and her 2025 book on ethical data narratives. In addition to her research impact, she is an award-winning educator and a sought-after keynote speaker, shaping both professional practice and the next generation of information professionals.

Upon learning of her selection as winner of the 2026 Research Impact Award, McDowell responded, “Library funding is under political threat in ways that are both long-standing and newly acute. The ability to communicate the value of libraries in data-backed, emotionally resonant ways is a vital tactic for these institutions’ survival. In 2016, I saw that misinformation was on a path to threaten open public information institutions, and the initial conception of the DSTL was in direct response to that context. Most importantly, this work is regularly shared through channels that are free, open, and responsive to library challenges, making the research a contribution to library resilience.”

The Association for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T) is delighted to announce that Nathan Johnson is the recipient of the 2026 Bob Williams Research Grant. The Grant is awarded to an outstanding research proposal exploring the history of information science and technology. Johnson’s grant proposal is titled, “Where We Forget: Information Systems and the Redistribution of Memory in the 20th Century.” This project focuses on an ongoing issue by investigating how information systems shift key responsibilities for human remembering into information systems.

Nathan R. Johnson is an Associate Professor at the University of South Florida. He earned his PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Information School. His research examines the history of information with a focus on the development of the 20th century information professions. His first book Architects of Memory examined how World War II technologies fundamentally reshaped public memory.

In assessing the proposal, one jury member wrote, “I think that most people realize that they remember fewer facts because they have offloaded memory to Google, but Johnson's book looks a the bigger picture - as he says, ‘By foregrounding the relationship between information systems and memory, it provides a framework for analyzing how decisions about classification, metadata, and system design influence what is preserved, made accessible, or lost. This perspective supports more reflective approaches to the ethical responsibilities of information professionals working within institutional systems that shape public knowledge.’ He used syllabi from mid-20th-century rhetoric curricula, a time when information science was emerging, to examine how information science supplanted memory as a central focus in traditional rhetoric education. This is novel, and his request is modest - to cover indexing and permissions. I highly recommend providing the funding for this work!”

Upon learning of his selection as winner of the grant, Johnson responded, “This is fantastic news, and I am over the moon! This award will make a huge difference for my book project. Thank you so much to ASIS&T, SIG-HFIS, and the memory of Bob Williams, who I did have the honor of meeting many years ago. He was such a wonderful person.”

Johnson will receive the grant during the 2026 meeting of ASIS&T which will be held 6-10 November 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand.
