Join Us! The Northeast Chapter of ASIS&T invites you to our upcoming webinar: “This Survey is Anonymous” : LIS Survey Demographics and Reidentification Risk

When: Thursday, August 13, 2026 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM EDT

Where: virtual

Cost: Free for ASIS&T members; $25 for non-ASIS&T members

Registration

Survey research conducted by student and faculty at iSchools as well as by practicing librarians frequently collects enough demographic information to risk easy re-identification of individual participants, especially those with unique job titles or minoritized identities . Despite the assertions of investigators that their survey is anonymous –the collection of recent survey instruments reveals that too often a laundry list of demographics is requested and may be required. This raises concerns about whether these investigators have considered the actual necessity of capturing this information or considered the potential harm as data sharing is increasingly common and may be mandated. Additionally, it suggests an over-reliance on IRB appraisal as a sole source for evaluating downstream harm and re-identification risk. This presentation will demonstrate how recently fielded surveys in LIS over-capture demographic data; will review the data sharing requirements that introduce additional re-identification risks; and serve as a call to action for critical consideration of what counts as “anonymous” in library survey research.

Presenter: Abigail Goben

Abigail Goben, MLS, is the Associate Chief Research Information Officer for Research Data Governance in the UIC Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research. She holds an academic appointment as Professor and Data Management Librarian in the UIC University Library. Goben leads development of researcher support across campus for data planning, sharing, and preservation. Her current scholarship includes strategic planning in data services; understanding leader inputs and disrupting hype in academic technological adoption; and critical evaluation of data management texts. Goben teaches coursework in data management, clinical informatics, critical AI Ethics, and information and data literacy. She is the President-Elect/President for the Research Data Access and Preservation Association. Goben is on Bluesky as @hedgielib.

Since 1980, this annual award has honored the unique teaching contributions of exceptional teachers of information science.

Sanfilippo is an Assistant Professor at the School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She joined the faculty of the School of Information Sciences in 2020 and has compiled an impressive record of contributions to teaching information science at the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levels since that time. Her teaching responsibilities encompass two established required courses (IS 202 Social Aspects of Information Technology for BS in Information Sciences students and IS 504 Sociotechnical Information Systems for MS in Information Management students) and two elective courses that she designed and introduced into the curriculum (IS 390 Principles and Practice of Data Governance for undergraduate students and IS 524 Data Governance for graduate students).

In her nomination letter, Linda C. Smith, Professor Emerita at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, echoed a PhD alumnus who said, “Professor Sanfilippo’s record reflects the core values of this award: excellence, innovation, sustained impact, and leadership in information science education. Her contributions have shaped students, advanced scholarship, and strengthened the broader academic community.” Another PhD student stated that “despite having over ten years of professional experience as a knowledge manager in international development, Dr. Sanfilippo’s teaching enabled me to identify critical gaps and new opportunities in how information science engages collaboration across universities, communities, governments, and international development sectors.”

Upon learning of her selection as the 2026 ASIS&T Outstanding Information Science Teacher Award winner, Sanfilippo said, “This means so much, and it is humbling to be included with the illustrious list of past recipients! I care deeply for our students and spend a lot of time and energy trying to help them grow as creative and critical thinkers, future professionals, and engaged members of a society that is increasingly sociotechnical. I am so grateful to have that impact acknowledged and that the students support this recognition.”

Sanfilippo was selected as the winner from among a pool of outstanding candidates who were judged based on these criteria: evidence of sustained and unique contributions to teaching information science; impact on students, colleagues, and institutions; innovative and imaginative teaching materials and methods; professional association activities related to teaching excellence; research activities related to teaching excellence; and previous teaching awards.

Sanfilippo will receive the award during the 2026 meeting of ASIS&T which will be held 6-10 November 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand.

The Association for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T) is delighted to announce that Nathan Johnson is the recipient of the 2026 Bob Williams Research Grant. The Grant is awarded to an outstanding research proposal exploring the history of information science and technology. Johnson’s grant proposal is titled, “Where We Forget: Information Systems and the Redistribution of Memory in the 20th Century.” This project focuses on an ongoing issue by investigating how information systems shift key responsibilities for human remembering into information systems.

Nathan R. Johnson is an Associate Professor at the University of South Florida. He earned his PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Information School. His research examines the history of information with a focus on the development of the 20th century information professions. His first book Architects of Memory examined how World War II technologies fundamentally reshaped public memory.

In assessing the proposal, one jury member wrote, “I think that most people realize that they remember fewer facts because they have offloaded memory to Google, but Johnson's book looks a the bigger picture - as he says, ‘By foregrounding the relationship between information systems and memory, it provides a framework for analyzing how decisions about classification, metadata, and system design influence what is preserved, made accessible, or lost. This perspective supports more reflective approaches to the ethical responsibilities of information professionals working within institutional systems that shape public knowledge.’ He used syllabi from mid-20th-century rhetoric curricula, a time when information science was emerging, to examine how information science supplanted memory as a central focus in traditional rhetoric education. This is novel, and his request is modest - to cover indexing and permissions. I highly recommend providing the funding for this work!”

Upon learning of his selection as winner of the grant, Johnson responded, “This is fantastic news, and I am over the moon! This award will make a huge difference for my book project. Thank you so much to ASIS&T, SIG-HFIS, and the memory of Bob Williams, who I did have the honor of meeting many years ago. He was such a wonderful person.”

Johnson will receive the grant during the 2026 meeting of ASIS&T which will be held 6-10 November 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand.

The award’s purpose is to recognize outstanding recent doctoral candidates whose research contributes significantly to an understanding of some aspect of information science. The award is intended to encourage participation of new PhDs in the activities of a professional association by providing a forum for the presentation of their research and assisting them with some travel support.

Zou, whose doctoral work was conducted at the University of Pittsburgh, was selected as the winner from among a pool of outstanding candidates who were judged based on these criteria: Importance of the topic to theory development and/or practical applications in information science; soundness of methodology; organization and clarity of the presentation; and quality of data (when applicable).

In supporting Zou's work, her advisor, Daqing He, wrote “In more than two decades of supervising doctoral research, this is the most significant work I have overseen. Dr. Zou's selection of self-tracking in dementia care demonstrates what rigorous site selection achieves. While HCI and CSCW have studied self-tracking extensively, information science has not fully deployed its theoretical resources on what collective, relational, morally weighted self-tracking practices could be. Dementia care makes this gap unavoidable by eliminating core assumptions: that the person whose data are collected participates in making them meaningful, that tracking is chosen rather than necessitated, and that the primary agent of sense-making is a capable individual. What emerges is data work at its most complex: distributed across actors with asymmetric knowledge and access, sustained through inadequate infrastructure, freighted with proxy decision-making for someone who can no longer full make such decision. This characterizes serious illness and dependency broadly, not dementia alone. Dr. Zou's Collaborative Personal Informatics framework—synthesizing collaborative information behavior, information worlds theory, and data lifecycle scholarship—provides our field's most rigorous account of collective data work."

Upon learning of her selection as the award winner, Zou said, “I am deeply grateful to ASIS&T and the doctoral dissertation award jury for this recognition. I did not expect this, but I always believed this work mattered. I spent years trying to understand something that became impossible to ignore once I saw it: that caring for someone with dementia is also, deeply, an information science problem. And what made that real to me was not the theory but the people who participated in this research, who showed me, in every conversation, how much they were carrying. This award is for them as much as it is for me, and I hope it helps bring more attention to the invisible work they do every day."

Zou will receive the award during the 2026 meeting of ASIS&T which will be held 6-10 November 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand.

About ASIS&T

This award recognizes the best refereed paper published in the JASIST volume year preceding the ASIS&T annual meeting. JASIST is published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The winning paper is selected for its contribution, professional merit, and presentation quality.

In this paper, the authors use a theoretical lens of infrastructural dimensions to examine stakeholders' perceptions of the value of curation, focusing on the social science data repository, the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). Drawing on 67 interviews with both internal (ICPSR staff) and external (funders, data producers, and reusers) stakeholders, they analyze how value is ascribed to curation across technical, organizational, and social components of infrastructure.

One award juror noted that the “This paper provides an accessible and convincing exploration of the importance of curation and the validity of framing it as an element of infrastructure.”

Upon learning of the award for their paper, the authors said, “We're honored to receive this award from ASIST for our work -- thank you! Curation infrastructures deserve sustained investment and scholarly attention. Our project was supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and represents the kind of federal investment in libraries and research infrastructure that is now under threat in the US. This award is a reminder of what's at stake when we defund the agencies that make rigorous, public-interest research possible.”

The award recognizes an individual or team who has made an outstanding contribution to information science research. The award is for a systematic “program of research” in a single area at a level beyond the single study, but not at the level of a lifetime’s work.

Erdelez is Dean of the School of Library and Information Science at Simmons University. Dr. Erdelez is recognized for her pioneering, field-defining research on information encountering—the serendipitous discovery of information—which she introduced in the 1990s and has since developed into a robust, theoretically grounded, and methodologically innovative research program. Dr. Erdelez’s work fundamentally redefined how the field understands human information behavior, challenging the dominant paradigm of intentional information seeking by demonstrating the vital role of unexpected and opportunistic discovery. Her influence spans disciplines—from library and information science to human-computer interaction, journalism, and online consumer behavior—and her models have informed recommender systems and content platforms globally. Her methodological contributions, including the first quasi-experimental studies on serendipitous discovery and development of the Information Encountering Scale, reflect a bold and systematic approach to research. Colleagues describe her as a “trailblazer,” a “disciplinary bridgebuilder,” and “the undisputed authority on serendipity in information science.” Dr. Erdelez has also shaped the field through mentorship, international leadership, and community building. In 2022, she served as an ASIS&T Distinguished Member received the Outstanding Contribution to Information Behavior Research Award from ASIS&T SIG-USE in 2025, and has received several other awards and recognitions from institutions such as University of Missouri (MU), ALISE, the University of Texas-Austin, and CIT.

In nominating Erdelez, Naresh Kumar Agarwal, Past ASIS&T President and Professor and Director of Information Science & Technology Concentration School of Library and Information Science at Simmons University, wrote that Dr. Sanda Erdelez is an internationally recognized scholar whose sustained research program on information encountering, the study of how individuals acquire information beyond deliberate seeking, has defined and advanced a core paradigm within human information behavior (HIB)" and "represents an exceptional candidate for this award, demonstrating the intellectual depth, coherence, and field-shaping impact it is designed to recognize".

Upon learning of her selection as winner of the Research in Information Science Award, Erdelez responded, “I am delighted and deeply honored to receive the Research in Information Science Award from ASIS&T, which has been my research home for much of my academic career. This recognition is especially meaningful because it affirms the importance of information behavior research and its contribution to our understanding of people’s complex, situated, and often unexpected relationships with information."

Erdelez will receive the award during the 2026 meeting of ASIS&T which will be held 6-10 November 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand.
