They are the conservative version of FDR’s brain trust: they want to regulate virtually all areas of human thought and action. They support government control of the economy, as well as government regulation of people’s moral and spiritual lives. The two comics evoked the phantom left, as the liberal class always does, in defense of moderation, which might better be described as apathy.
