Besides the proven veteran cinematic techniques employed by Tsui Hark, the film doesn't really make an impression less its female characterisation in a genre typically dominated by male testosterone. It may feel strangely familiar to some of you, Alexander Payne's "The Descendants" allows intrinsic domestic values to surface in tandem above that unexplainable veil of serene grace guided by directorial and music credits. As we navigated through a group of mundane people interacting with one another within an ordinary story that could be replicated in real life, one of the best films of the year surprisingly emerged at the end of all that.

Almost convinced that the grueling fights taking place in this film were for real, this was definitely a pristine showcase of how action films should be made. Forgoing the story almost entirely and opting for perfecting the action thriller genre with great camerawork and editing, this would be a whole new playing field altogether especially after throwing in a new found starlet in the form of MMA fighter Gina Carano.

Seen more as an adaptation of the Icelandic original, this English speaking take by Baltasar Kormákur harnessed the thrills and tried well to suppress implausibilities within the film. At times raw and real, there were a couple of moments when the script betrayed the plausibility. Much would not have been accomplished if not for some credible cast performance by the likes of antagonist Giovanni Ribisi.

Films like "War Horse", "The Tree of Life", and "Margin Calls" were some of the notable omissions that we dearly missed. Despite being a technically well-crafted piece of filmmaking by acclaimed David Fincher, the English language remake of the Swedish original induced some wonders and nothing further. Strange that Fincher's take was relatively conservative where the sexual violence and dark demeanour were restrained a notch or two from expectation. Rooney Mara had never shone brighter in her career with her willingness to undergo physical transformation and practice method acting, but it doesn't...<br/>

One of the best films of the year, Steven Spielberg once again instilled cinematic wonder in this well-crafted film with great story-telling. Production values were peaking in various aspects such as wardrobe costumes and location set design. Besides featuring great acts by both the cast and horse to evoke strong emotions, the film also boasted technical excellence in sound design/mix and cinematography.

Arguably this might not be Cameron Crowe's best efforts at filmmaking. What this film succeeded in was serving us a good dosage of heart-warming sincerity that would bring us back down to earth and appreciate things as they were. Aiming right at the family audience group, the wide variety of characters ranging from a cranky old zookeeper to a naive seven year-old set a worthy example of cohesive domestic values.

Striking the audience hard with a relatively dense plot that thickened as the film progressed, plot twists and turns seemed to be loosely-reined by the screenwriters and saturated the entire film. Its relatively short running time of under 90 minutes and quick pace were determined not to leave anyone with space for thoughts and plot digestion in an otherwise well-acted feature with the likes of Francis Ng and Chapman To.

The scenario of following a group of Americans in their quest to survive and retaliate against an unexpected world alien invasion would have been a good material for a big-budget blockbuster. Here in "The Darkest Hour", the filmmakers had not capitalise upon a frightening premise of having invisible alien species versus the humans and instead focused on crafting superficial genre worthy action sequences to excite and entertain at the expense of a loose script full of plot...<br/>

Upon scrutiny of the two minutes trailer, it's probably not a surprise that not much is revealed of the plot here (which is good in a spoiler-free manner). This is much in line with Christopher Nolan pre-release strategy, just like how he did...<br/>

Not only was I amazed by the visual clarity and the stunts, the laser-aligned sound quality was simply overwhelming. Much as Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law got more intimate to spark off some really hilarious and charming chemistry, there were times when it felt like the screenplay tried too hard to induce as much "bromance" as possible . The central plot investigative case was relatively weak and unchallenging, lacking that satisfying "every piece of puzzle fits together" conclusive sensation that some might be looking for.
