I absolutely love HTC's new advertising campaign. It's hip and fast-paced, very appealing to potential smartphone users. The engaging commercials are just like music videos or mini-documentaries, but the touch is light and entertaining as they demonstrate the intrinsic connection between people and their phones. And that's important since mobiles don't just make calls these days, but rather function as a complete productivity and entertainment system.

In my last post on the new iPAQ Glisten, I focused on the unboxing and hardware aspects of the phone (go here to check it out). In this post, I’ll review some of the basic WinPho (or is it still WinMo?) capabilities. I easily connected with it to my WiFi network, downloaded a few programs from the new Windows Marketplace, checked my e-mail and briefly surfed the web.

Frankly, I’d been seeing AMOLED displays being touted as a feature on some new phones but wasn’t sure what that was. This week we’ll take a brief look at that, as well as note some more HD2 reviews and the release of a new version of the free Skyfire browser.

Glisten Unboxing

I have had the HP iPAQ Glisten for over a week or so now, but just getting round to the un-boxing post (sorry). I am impressed in some ways, but HP staying almost completely away from adding any custom/additional apps is a little surprising. The HTC Pure, by comparison, is much more loaded, though AT&T isn’t shy about dumping on a bunch of their apps to any phone under their network banner (apps that push up your data charges, of course).

This web site and forum contains over 10 years of useful content for Windows Mobile users. The site began in 1998 as handheldpcmag.com, became pocketpcmag.com, and now is smartphonemag.com. Microsoft in the meantime changed its lexicon from “Handheld PC” to “Palm-sized PC” to “Pocket PC” to “Smartphone” and now to “Windows Phone”. Microsoft referred to the underlying operating system as “Windows CE”, “Windows Mobile” and now just “Windows”.

I like Microsoft’s Bing search engine, so it’s great to see them continuing to develop it for the mobile space. This week we’ll note a new version of Bing for Windows Mobile, as well as a new version of Google Maps for Mobile. Also, I’ll point you to reviews of the new AT&T iPAQ Glisten and Omnia Pro phones.
