I must say that I was surprised when I received this "tablet" for review. Somehow I was expecting a 7 to 10 inch screen, but instead, this unit is about the size of an iPod touch. In fact, that's the best way to describe it. It's an Android iPod touch.

It's a bit thicker than an iPod with a smaller touch screen at 3.2 inches with a 400 x 240 resolution and 18 bit color depth. I found the on screen keyboard extremely difficult to use because the screen and keys are so small. It measures approximately 2 1/8 x 4 1/8 x 1/4 inches and weighs a mere 2 1/2 ounces.

I haven't had such a horrible reading experience since I think about 1998 or 1999. I had forgotten that it was like trying to wrestle an octopus in the dark. It's better when you have light, lots of light. The worst part is not so much trying to see the blurry, small print on cheap paper as it is trying to keep the page from curving and the whole thing closing and slipping out of your hands--hands because the unpleasant process takes two hands to make it viable. And your arms get tired and maybe cold if you don't have the heat turned up sufficiently.

HP TouchPad Review

A friend managed to get me a TouchPad to check out. To summarize, I would say it's more or less a somewhat slower (and cheaper) version of iPad--there are simple optimization tweaks that do speed it up to a comparable level for most tasks. In other areas, the webOS shines rather well, especially in simple multitasking, navigation and a few other areas. Who knows, maybe HP will try again with a newer device? Or some other vendor will come along to carry on the webOS banner in a tablet form.

I don't know about you, but I am constantly challenged finding a place on my cluttered dashboard and windshield to mount a digital device. I don't know why it's not illegal to drive and text/talk at the same time, but there are still some states that don't seem to care. It's a lethal combination. Nothing give me shivers more that a soccer mom with a van full of kids yakking away on her phone.

It really doesn't matter if it's against the law or not; it's simply not safe. Everyone should have a handsfree device for mobile phones in the car. If only I could introduce them to the wonders of Supertooth Buddy.
