Speed School of Engineering on Monday, September 20, the smell of Hot N' Ready pizzas lingered in the air. A racecar and off-road vehicle were parked casually near the sidewalk, as tables with posterboards started popping up. Confused students meandered about, trying to figure out how to acquire this "free pizza" with paper tickets?

This scene describes the 2010 Society Picnic, held from 11:00 am-1:00 pm last Monday. Thanks to all of the societies who participated, it was a great success! Each competition awarded points, 4 for first place, 3 for second place, 2 for third place, and 1 for fourth place. All of the pictures from this year's event are available on Facebook and on Flickr.

The Societies
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)

Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)

Speed School Student Council (SSSC)

Society of Women Engineers (SWE)

The Events
Kickball
The first event of the day was kickball. The teams competed in a bracket format playing 3 innings for each game and only two outs per inning.

The games and scores are as follows:
Game 1: SAE (13) vs. SWE (1)
Game 2: IEEE (4) vs. SSSC (3)
Loser Bracket: SSSC(5) vs. SWE (3)
Winner Bracket: SAE (4) vs. IEEE (1)

Tug of War
The tug of war event was also run in a tournament fashion. Not much to explain here, all you need to do is drag the other team's marker across the line.

The matchups were as follows:

Round 1: SAE (W) vs. IEEE

Round 2: SWE vs SSSC (W)

Loser Bracket: SWE vs IEEE (W)

Winner Bracket: SAE vs SSSC (W)

Balloon Toss
The balloon toss event required a pair from each team to toss a water balloon back and forth. After each successful toss back and forth, everyone took a step backwards. SSSC was the first team to be eliminated. After a few more rounds all three of the remaining teams were eliminated at the same distance. IEEE, SAE, and SWE all took another balloon and repeated the event. SWE was the next team to be eliminated followed by SAE. IEEE was the only team that remained, mostly, dry.

Three Legged Race
The three legged race was a relay race that required each pair from each team to run 40 yards. The race ended in a photo finish with IEEE lunging across the finish line to just barely beat out SSSC.

Shoe Race
The shoe race required four members from each team to put their shoes in a pile. The pile was then mixed up. Each member of the society was required to run to the pile of shoes that way 40 yards away and then put on their shoes before tagging the next member. The race was dominated with IEEE which finished almost 40 yards ahead of the next team.

Hot Dog Eating
The final contest was the hot dog eating contest. The rules required one member from each society to eat six hot dogs as fast as possible. SSSC would like to thank all of the students who participated and congratulate the following teams and individuals.

Congratulations to the "Punch Bros.," who won the highly competitive Volleyball league which had 17 teams compete.

Also, congratulations to "My Team" who won the Ultimate Frisbee league.

Speed School's Biggest Loser was especially competitive, as a cash prize was involved. First place went to Randy Cross, who lost 22.2 pounds, which was an 8.20% loss from his starting weight!

Cristina Heisler came in second place by losing 16.6 pounds, a 7.97% decrease. Third place went to Lauren Speaker who lost 7.8 pounds or 4.68% of her original weight. (She is sad to report, however, that after summer break and going on vacation, she has probably gained most of it back!)

Thanks to everyone who participated! If there is enough interest, we may host this event again in future semesters.

To remedy this, at the general body meeting today, council voted to suspend the constitution rules regarding society standing temporarily.

How it will work:

If a society attends all three remaining SSSC general business meetings in the Summer 2010 semester and attends five of the ten Society game nights, this society will be granted good standing for the Fall 2010 semester. After this takes place, we will revert back to the constitution rule regarding society standing.

SSSC General Business meetings: June 10, June 24, July 8, 12:20 in JS 100

Society Game Nights: May 27, June 1, 3, 7, 10, 14, 21, 24, 28, July 1, 9:15 pm-10:45 pm in Vogt 2nd floor Supercomputer Lab.

In the fall or spring, the constitutional revision committee may make changes to society status permanently. Currently, a society goes into bad standing after missing three general body meetings in a row or four during the semester. To regain good standing, they must attend meetings for two entire semesters.

The concept is very simple: a player is given a contract to locate another player that is also playing the game. To complete the contract the player must simply locate their target and "tag" them, Seeker is just a high-tech version of hide and seek. However, there are a few restrictions to when a contract can be completed. First, you can not eliminate someone during class or during a meeting. The intent of this rule is that the game should not disrupt a class. Also, the only "safe" area in the game is the Speed School Student Council office. Student Council operates this game and does not want to discourage those that are playing from using the council office.

Seeker is a continuously played game that lasts for the entire semester. Players are issued contracts that last for 72 hours and must complete their contract before it expires. When a player has a contract completed on them they are out of the game for 24 hours. New contracts are issued periodically to players who do not have an active contract. Additionally, you can drop out of the game at any time or join in on the fun at any time.

Spring 2010 was the first semester that Seeker was played. After a total of 870 issued contracts with 240 of them being successfully completed, the game was found to be a great success. The next round of Seeker will begin on May 17th 2010. Those who have already registered should switch their accounts to active so they will be issued contracts when the game starts. If you do not have an account you will need the "game password" before you can register, which you can get from anyone who has a registered account.

Best of luck to the players!

http://seeker.speedcouncil.org/

This is a great time to introduce incoming students to SSSC and the Speed societies and to show them how much fun Speed school can be. In order to accomplish this, however, we need your help!

Just as a reminder, orientation sessions are two days. On the first day, SSSC will have a booth at the RSO Fair. That night, we sponsor a Society Game Night. On the second day, SSSC and Leadership Advantage will give a short presentation and the students will register for classes. As you can see, there are four different opportunities to get to know the new freshmen, so there is something for everyone! (More information on each opportunity is listed below.)

These are the dates scheduled for freshman orientation:
May 27-28 (Th-F), June 1-2 (T-W), June 3-4 (Th-F), June 7-8 (M-T), June 10-11 (Th-F), June 14-15 (M-T), June 21-22 (M-T), June 24-25 (Th-F), June 28-29 (M-T, June 30-July 1 (W-Th)

If you wish to help promote SSSC, please come to the RSO fair from 1:35 to 2:05 pm on the first day. SSSC will have a trifold display and volunteers will answer questions from incoming students.

The Society Game Nights will be held primarily on Monday and Thursday nights throughout May and June. They will be held in the Vogt 2nd floor Supercomputer lab. This year, in addition to video games, there will be a Jeopardy game, cards, board games, and other activities. We need plenty of people to help out! Please come out so you can promote your society or organization to the new freshmen!

Finally, registering can be confusing for some, so help is also needed to show the students how to choose classes, form a schedule, and register online. The time slots for presentations and scheduling are 10:10 am to 11:15 am and 12:10 pm to 1:15 pm.

If you are available at these dates and times, or for more information on Orientation sessions, please contact Jeremy Bozarth at dosaf@speedcouncil.org and let him know what aspects of orientation you are interested in. We recognize that over the fall and spring semesters, some students were not able to accomplish their nutrition and exercise goals due to school work and other activities and now some people want to lose their Freshman (or Sophomore or Junior) 15. We have designed a fun and competitive way for people to get motivated to lose weight!

We will have an interest meeting May 17 at 5:00 pm in the Council office. Here we will explain the specifics of the program including monetary prizes, charity involvement, Campus Health presentations, and other details.

May 24, we will officially begin with our first weigh-in at the Council office at 5:00 pm. Please wear a lightweight t-shirt and shorts, with socks (so that you can be weighed without shoes.) Also, bring your application/waiver and entry fee.
