Happy Fall to everyone and we already had snow in some parts. Do you believe it? It’s been quite awhile since my last column—My apologies… But, I’m back in the saddle and hope you enjoy! So much fun coming up you will get sick of me.. Nah.. from all the fantastic emails I get you love it! I thank you for that!

A LOOK BACK ON A GRAND PRIX

This long planned event dodged the earthquake, Hurricane Irene and all the naysayers with egg on their faces now. We started our PRIX experience on a Friday evening at Radcliffe Jewelers, in Pikesville for a charity reception to benefit Sinai’s Children’s Center. In addition to being surrounded by some of the most beautiful baubles anywhere, folks enjoyed fantastic food and drink in anticipation of the special guest, Grand Prix’s premier driver Dario Franchitti. Unlike his professional goal of being first, Franchitti ran quite late but the crowd cheered when he arrived. Spotted were WJZ-TV’s Marty Bass and his wife Sharon, Francis Reeves and her hubby Tom Koch, Baltimore Sun’s Social/Society Columnist and fashionista- Sloane Brown and Edie and Stan Brown. A spirited auction by Rick Opfer certainly boosted the charitable arm of this event in addition to the TW Steel watch sales for whom Fanchitti was pretty face of…

MY RACE DAY
Truly a Sunday FunDAY!~~~ We started our day at the Ritz Carlton for a Race Day brunch hosted by residents Ray and Janice Ferguson who also served as our race day guides. Strolling through the Inner Harbor with all the hustle bustle was terrific. Before I go on I would like to congratulate Grand Prix Prez Jay Davidson and Peter Collier who served as the Chief Operating Officer of the event-Well Done! Spotted in the crowds were Maryland Cosmetic Surgery Center’s Dr. Michael Cohen, B’more residents & college lacrosse players including Cathy Hebert (University of Cincinnati), Jesse Schuman (Mount St. Mary’s) and former Princeton goalie turned America’s Next Top Model” finalist, Jane Randall to name a very few. The fun continued when we headed to the beautiful Zenith Penthouse, located at 511 West Pratt Street for a private party held by the fun folks with Advanced Pain Management-The Spine Specialist. With phenomenal panoramic views, we watched the racers fly down Pratt Street and hug the curves around Camden Yards while enjoying fabulous food from Jerry’s Seafood.
“ I would highly recommend corporations utilizing the Grand Prix for networking in the future. It is a once a year event that does draw interest. Motor Car Racing around the world is huge and will grow substantially here in the States,” said Advanced Pain Management’s Margaret Evans.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ANCHORS AWAY FOR WASHINGTON REDSKINS
Some say the two happiest days of a boater’s life are the day he buys it, and the day he sells it. If any of that is true there is a happy man just south of Baltimore.  The Lady Anne (LOVE THE NAME), at 224 feet one of the 100 biggest yachts in the world, was sold to an investment group that includes Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder. The bottom line for the deal, which wrapped up last month, was not revealed, but is thought to be in the $70 million end zone. Why, that’s only three NFL salaries!
The big-ticket item is barely a nick to Snyder, whose fortune is estimated at $1.1 billion.  From some of the Redskin fans grumblings of late they wish he would sell the team! Tee-Hee.
Socially Speaking of the well to do…
-Checks in the Mail-
Madoff bankruptcy trustee Irving Picard says the checks — some $312 million worth — are on the way to more than 1,200 of Bernie Madoff’s investors. Hardly a windfall. The average payment is $253,660 — or 4.6 cents on the dollar. EEKS..
Really? As of last month, according to my sources Picard has recovered more than $8 billion from the Ponzi scheme’s investors who took out more than they put in. The checks mailed were earmarked for investors who put in more than they took out. A little bit is better than none. But more would be best, I bet…
FALLSTON JUST GOT MORE FABULOUS
Recently, I went to the newly opened Mallet Restaurant and Crabhouse located on the corner of Mountain Road (Route 152) and Belair Road (Route 1) and even though this locale has had many identities, I’m betting this one is here to stay.  Owner, Tony Ashe who is part of a consortium on investors, welcomed us and gave a tour of this massive establishment. No doubt there is something for everyone here. If you want intimate fine dining, you got it…  Family dining, you got it. If you’re in the mood for a raw bar experience, you got that too. And, if its sports viewing, then I can’t recall a better place. I will say one of my favorite rooms was the gorgeous Martini/ Tapas Bar.  In the warmer months folks will be able to enjoy outdoor dining on steamed crabs with an amazing Tiki Bar.
Now onto the wonderful food. No two people in the food industry do I respect more than Chef Davide Rossi and his lovely wife Christa formerly of Paza Luna Restaurant. They guided the collaboration of the Mallet’s menu and it did not disappoint.
Our tasting included freshly made sushi, Soup de Jour, an incredible cream of mushroom and plenty of yums we Marylanders have come to love and call our own.
Customers can review and download the menus at the website http://www.malletrestaurant.com. The Mallet Restaurant and Crabhouse is open 7 days a week for lunch, dinner, as well as early and late happy hours. Crabs are served year round and available for carryout.
Just the beginning
The Mallet Restaurant and Crabhouse is just getting started. There is so much more to come. Think brunch, comedy nights, volleyball tournaments, reunions, charity events, corporate team building, and celebrity events…. In fact, make sure to check out their upcoming entertainment schedule.
FROM THE DID HE REALLY SAY THAT FILE?
Last Sunday, on a popular local Sports Raven Pre-Game show hosted by sports icon Stan The Fan, guest former Raven defensive end, Rob Burnett commented to the Stan that sometimes players get “stale on coaching—you know the same message gets old-  sorta like the pre game national anthem gets old.” WHAT???   Got news for you Mr. Burnett, The Star Spangled Banner never gets old to this American !
•	ON A PERSONAL NOTE
•	My heart is broken for the ownership & staff of the historic Mount Washington Tavern  which recently suffered a devastating fire that consumed this local landmark. Like many, I have spent many fun times there and now my kids do—which is cool because that’s where I met their Dad. Godspeed to the Tavern.
GRADING THE GREAT DEALS
As I told you in my last column entry, I went WAY overboard on the Groupon-Living Social-Chewpon, deal of the day You name it; I signed up for it. So to make sure I utilize all these fabulous deals before they expire, I introduce to you…
“Here’s My Take”
Sabor Restaurant located in, Lutherville-Balto.County,
  has been serving it up since 2008. Upon our arrival with dates, daughter, Catie and dear friend and “Top Dog” of Haute Dog Carte (Falls Rd), Daniel Raffel it was clear that this was not a stereotypical strip mall restaurant. Overall, the menu was great, tasty combination of French preparation with a Latino twist.  But what was really nice was the Chef’s specials selections and the service which matched the warm décor. Now expect to drop some $$$ on the meal but you will save some $$$ on the beverage end because it’s B.Y.O.B and there is a liquor store in the same shopping center.
~~Socially Speaking of Daniel Raffel…  Due to his phenomenal success at the Haute Dog Carte, he’s got another bun in the oven. Yup, he’s expecting to open another location very soon!   Daniel better start using condiments or there will be Haute Dog Carts sprouting up everywhere.  Congrats !
No worries, I will give you the new locale in my next issue.
ORIOLES GETTING TASTIER
It’s official that Charm City’s own Roma Sausage will be featuring their Natty Boh N’ Old Bay Brats this season at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. This is a great thing for a local vendor to be partnering with a major league sports team. Thanks to my Facebook friend, Abe Froman, for this tasty hometown update.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXTRA-EXTRA

Charm City welcomed Mario Lopez of “Dancing With The Stars”, “Saved By The Bell”, and multiple other acting/talent gigs, this week. While here, he visited the kids at Johns Hopkins then headed over to Meli Restaurant, in Fells Point for lunch and a meet and greet with Channel 24 fans, thanks to Downtown Diane. By dindin he was spotted at Roy’s in Harbor East, getting his Bawlmer on.
SPOTTED

~~~~United States Senator  Barbara Mikulski was seen enjoying a fine meal at the historic Milton Inn Restaurant, in Sparks recently.  I’m told that Chef Brian Boston sent an amuse bouche of shrimp, crab and mussels to patrons that was fantastic!
~~~~ With the NFL’s CBA baloney going on, some coaches are spending their time at other sporting venues. I recently bumped into New England Patriot’s Head Coach, Bill Belichick at a college lacrosse game, in Philly and YES he had a hoodie on.  Belichick’s son plays for Rutgers University and is one heck of a
player !
GOOD DEAL ADDICTION
Ok, admitting I have a problem is the first step, right?
So, I have decided to make sure I utilize all these great “deals” by writing about my experiences with each one. So far, I have purchased Groupon/ Living Social deals to restaurants, eye doctors, skin care and hair services , to name a few. I hesitate to call it a “review” more like my view and like many of you really don’t want to see any of my purchases go to waste. So, my next column will include my recent trips to Sabor Restaurant, in Lutherville and due to a power outage a last minute trip to Ethel & Ramone’s, in Mt. Washington. Keep tuned in…

PAZZA LUNA ADDS TO MENU

Pazza Luna Restaurant is one of my favorite places on earth. Chef Davide and his lovely wife, Christa Rossi, who took over the establishment last year, not only weathered last winter’s wrath they also won the hearts and palates of many as reflected on Baltimore’s OpenTable and with recognition in the following categories for the State of Maryland, according to Examiner.com’s “Dining Dish” Dara Bunjon.
RESULTS:

•         Best Italian Food  #1

CONGRATS!!!!

ADDING TO GREATNESS

Recently, our media group was invited to sample the new menu items added to an already fabulous menu. Taste buddies included Style’s main man and Editor in Chief- Brian M. Lawrence, lady about town-Downtown Diane, columnist for Food Service Monthly- Randi Rom, and above noted Dara Bunjon. Walking into Pazza Luna is like returning to a dear friends house, warm and welcoming. Christa not only served her hubbies creations, she educated us on every aspect of its derivation and wine pairing. The meal is not just about eating fantastic food it’s about experiencing it. Menu items we learned and loved included:
For Starters:

BRESAOLA DI VALTELLINA thinly sliced air-dried beef topped with goat cheese mousse, shaved Parmesan, celery and mixed greens. Amazing and so fresh!

SOUP OF THE DAY- Mixed Wild Mushroom Soup—Which was one of the BEST things I have ever tasted and as wonderfully smooth and creamy even though made without cream! Christa informed us that to achieve the texture Chef Davide uses potato as the thickening agent.

FENNEL ORANGE SALAD- Julienne fennel and orange sections served with lemon EVO caper dressing. This salad and its placement in the meal have not only a YUM value but as we were told it serves as a positive digestive part of the meal.

VALENTINE SPECIAL- Chef created this dish for this past Valentine’s Day, but we were lucky enough to sample. This creation of Zucchini risotto made from premium carnoli rice, in a vegetable stock, topped with fresh Maine lobster tail and sauce was clearly made with love.

Last but not least…

TONNO MEDITERRANEO- Ahi grilled (rare) tuna over steam brocolini topped with tomato concasse capers, scallions, chive and lemon. So yummy and light; thank goodness because at this point I was in food coma pain.

Dessert
I’m not a sweets person but when Christa brought the Belgian Chocolate Crème Brulee I could not help but admire what looked like dessert heaven. All my dining mates raved about this end to what was an amazing food experience.
So, now that things are thawing out head, down to Locust Point to Pazza Luna. I PROMISE, you will thank me for sending you.

FROM THE FUNNY FILE

My father, the Honorable Judge A. Gordon Boone, Jr. was recently recovering at St. Joseph’s Hospital, in Towson where I learned a few things. Gone are the days of the mystery tray arriving with God knows what on it. Now a days you get to call your order in, from a menu and voila it is delivered to the patient’s room. So after Dad decided on his meal I called the number on the menu and like most things these days was promptly but on hold. Not unusual, right? Well the filler message was for Bariatric weight loss surgery conducted at the hospital. Ok? Really? Alrighty then… When the live person came on I made it clear I was ordering the bacon cheeseburger and fries for my dad.
SPOTTED

Francis Baldwin who completed the former B&O station in 1883. Stewart Dearie, the owner, gave us the grand tour and provided historical tid bits prior to our dinner, even showing us the outdoor dining area, presently cold weather proofed, where the train still runs on the track behind the restaurant. “It’s even more beautiful during the day where you can dine overlooking the Patapsco River”, Dearie proudly shared. The first thing that hit me here was the incredible warmth and versatility of the place. Second thing was how wonderful the entire staff was especially Executive Chef Darrick Granai who passionately explained that evening’s specials. Attention to detail seems to be Baldwin Station’s strong suit even surprising Randi Rom, Food Service Monthly columnist, with gluten free crab cakes, which were amazing. My dinner started with Baldwin’s whole leaf Caesar salad, Romaine Hearts, Parmesan tuile, sun dried tomato pesto chip, with a tasty Caesar dressing, which was a perfect size. For a main course, I chose to color outside of my steak box and ordered the Chipolte Rubbed Seared Ahi Tuna with avocado, mango and crab relish, ginger jasmine rice, butter poached asparagus and sweet & sour vinaigrette, which was perfectly cooked rare as I requested. All at our table raved about their entrees, with many of us taking home leftovers due to the generous portions. During this crazy holiday season, give yourself a gift and take some time to make the pretty drive out to Baldwin’s Station. You will thank me. Check them out at BaldwinsStation.com

PUTTING ON MORE RITZ & PUTTING IN ALDO’S

As many of you know, local writer, Tom Clancy, has added three additional Ritz Carlton units to his original purchase. No doubt the sales of his latest novel “Dead or Alive”, which hit the shelves recently, must be brisk this holiday season. But, prior to the book being released, Mr. Clancy, who is a frequent diner at Aldo’s restaurant in Little Italy, shared with Aldo’s owner Sergio Vitale that his establishment would be featured in the novel. How awesome is that? Stop in and tell Sergio what chapter Aldo’s appears and I bet a big ole smile will come your way.

Speaking of Twitter, the lovelies at BELIFESTYLE luxury Medspa recently hosted an Open House event to for their customers and new friends. We were treated to a behind the scene tour of the Cosmetic Surgery Center of Maryland facility headed up by Drs. Cohen, Lickstein, Byrne and Boyle. Spa services were explained in great detail, and after putting my mug in the back to the future machine, I quickly made an appointment for an anti aging facial. Now folks here won’t toot their own horn, but I will… I attend many charitable events and this group’s presence is quite strong. From the Women’s Heritage Center, to raising funds for breast cancer research this group stays very active in the community they serve. On a feel good note… The BeLifeStyle Medspa Office Manager, Dawn Richardson, who is married to former Raven kicker, Kyle Richardson shared that the couple is expecting their 2nd child in 2011.

Now that fall is officially here and the social season has kicked into gear I decided just like the kids had to do recently, that I would do a “What Anne Did This Summer” column.

CHARM CITY FOOD TOURS
Let’s start with one of the coolest new things to do in Baltimore, Charm City Food Tours. You may have read in the Baltimore Sun recently about Charm City Food Tours. I had the pleasure this summer of taking the Fells Point tour. Marketing Director and tour guide extraordinaire, Celeste Corsaro, led our group on a fun, informative tour stopping at various local establishments and sampling their specialties of the food and beverage variety. Make sure to wear your comfy shoes because Celeste makes sure you get your moneys worth and that means some foot mileage.
I would highly recommend the Food Tour for all, but especially if you have some relatives coming to visit. It truly is a great time. For more information on their Fall tour schedule go to http://www.baltimorefoodtours.com and make sure to tell them “Socially Speaking” sent you.

TANGIER’S
It’s always a hoot to get together with my media peeps, and our recent trip to the newly opened Canton restaurant, Tangier’s Bistro & Martini Lounge, was no exception. This location has had many previous faces but for three reasons, I feel this face is going to stick. One, the homemade sangria is to die for. Two, operators Alan Suissa and Kenny Mahil’s passion for the restaurant just beams and watching them greet and interact with customers was special. Last, but not least, three, the food. I can sum up the French Northern Moroccan cuisine like this, fresh and fabulous. Now, I have been back to Tangier’s and it wasn’t just the grand opening fervor because this visit was wonderful on all levels. It’s just a slice of Casablanca heaven, in Canton.

TWO 2008 LOCAL GRADS ARE STARS IN THE MAKING
Congrats to Austin Knight who was a baseball phenom at Boys Latin, went onto college and this summer was drafted by the Orioles and brought up to The Iron Birds. Hopefully orange and black is in his future.
Roland Park Country School’s, Jane Randall, of Monkton hung up her lacrosse gear and traded them in for some high heels. Jane is a contestant on the latest installment of Tyra Banks’ America’s Next Top Model, which premiered on September 8th. She has made it through three cuts thus far. So tune in every Wednesday night at 8 p.m. to cheer our local girl on!

HOT FOR HAUTE DOG
With this past July being National Hot Dog month, how apropos was it for Daniel Raffel, owner of Ala Carte Distinctive Catered Affairs ,to open an upscale hot dog stand.
The Haute Dog Carte, located at 6070 Falls Road, a smidge south of Lake Avenue continues to receive high praises for having some of the best hot dogs in Baltimore. Raffel’s energy shows not only in his demeanor, but also in his knowledge of all things wiener. From specialty dogs and delish condiments, Haute Dog Carte will make you relish lunchtime again. Follow them on Twitter @Hautedogcarte for daily specials.

ANNE’S FABULOUS FINDS

Actually, I must give credit to my daughter Catie for this find and you will thank us both especially with the holidays right around the corner. It’s called Woozie and with the brutally hot summer we just had, this coozie for wine glasses was a grape saver. After ordering some customized Woozie’s, I contacted the wonderful folks at Woozie and they showed me that Woozie was not just for wine glasses but the decorative insulators also covered wine bottles too. This is a family owned company, Julie and Frank Sherron aim to please by offering this functional item in many styles and colors. So go get a little Woozie and you will look great doing it! October is breast cancer awareness month and I will be ordering my pink ribbon Woozie for my sister in law who is battling this monster. Check them out at www.woozie.com

BUON COMPLEANNO

For those of you not well versed in the Italian language “Buon Compleanno” means Happy Birthday and Little Italy resident Mr.John Pente recently celebrated his 100th birthday. He was born in the house in which he still resides today, on the corner of High & Stiles Streets. He and his family last year were awarded the first “Centennial Homes Award” by Baltimore City for the house that has been in the Pente family for more than a century. According to a story on WJZ’s website, Mr. Pente’s grandparents bought the 11-room house in 1904 for $2,000.

Mr. Pente allows the annual summer movies series to be projected from his third floor window onto the big screen across the street every Friday night in July & August for the Open Air Film Festival sponsored by the Little Italy Restaurant Association. He is often seen sitting outside his house on the aligning chairs where his many longtime neighbors and friends stop to chat. So if you’re in the neighborhood tell “Mr. John” Buon Compleanno and many more.
32nd ANNUAL ED BLOCK COURAGE AWARDS

For 32 years the Ed Block Courage Awards Foundation has been raising money for the prevention of child abuse here in Baltimore. Named after former BALTIMORE Colt trainer, Ed Block, this prestigious award honors a player from each of the 32 NFL teams. The players are selected by vote of their teammates. It is an award that is draped in compassion-courage-commitment-character-community as displayed by a player while living with adversity. CEO and Chairman of the Ed Block Board, Sam Lamantia, Jr., welcomed all of the recipients, their families and supporters to Martins West recently for this fabulous event. Spotted in the crowd were former Baltimore Colts Toni Linhart and his wife Renata, Jim Mutscheller and his wife Bert and the always-smiling Tom Matte. Baltimore’s Marching Ravens band President, John Ziemann, could barely sit down due to the countless people thanking him for everything he did to keep the Baltimore Colts Marching Band alive after the team’s departure, as depicted in Barry Levinson’s ESPN documentary “The Band That Wouldn’t Die”.
The Ed Block Courage Foundation had to handle a great deal of heat due to the nomination of Philadelphia Eagle, Michael Vick. Remember, this award is voted on by the players not the foundation. His team felt he was deserving of this award for his actions since paying his debt to society, including his commitment to influencing the community that dog fighting is not acceptable on any level. I did have the pleasure of chatting with Vick’s fiancé, Kijafa Frink who is following her future husband’s charitable journey by helping the youth in the city of Philadelphia. It was so good to see the recognition for our Baltimore Raven recipient, Dawan Landry, who came back from a serious neck injury in 2008 to have a great 2009 season. Congrats to all the volunteers and committee members for a job well done for such a wonderful cause…the children.
MILAN BALTIMORE

The Milan restaurant opened in January of this year but it was just a few weeks ago that our media group got to try this new Little Italy hot spot. Located at 1000 Eastern Avenue, in the former Luigi Petti locale this 12,000 square foot restaurant hosts 3 dining levels, an outdoor dining patio, a very cool “U” shaped bar and a décor designed by local talent Meghan Hoffman. Another local angle is the Executive Chef for Milan, Marylander Stephen Carey but that’s where the local buck stops. This place has a very contemporary European vibe unlike the traditional Little Italy atmosphere. Our fabulous waiter, Stephen gave his cocktail and menu suggestions which was very helpful because if your over forty you will need a small flashlight and cheater glasses due to a very dim lighting and small menu font. I would give the appetizers and salads high marks but still think there are some kinks to work out with the Lobster Mac n’Cheese. Style Editor, Brian Lawrence thought quite highly of his Pollo-Della Domenica, which was a roasted chicken with Yukon, mashed potatoes. All in all, I would say Milan does live up to its mantra of “Where Food Meets Fashion.” Milan also offers daily happy hour special from 5p.m. to 7p.m.
FRESH THOUGHTS

A Sustainable Seafood Dining Series

This spring, area top chefs Jesse Sandlin, Bryan Voltaggio, and Jill Snyder are headlining at the National Aquarium’s for their third installment of Fresh Thoughts. All the chefs involved had competed on the Bravo TV show “Top Chef”. We had the pleasure of going to the first one featuring Chef Jesse Sandlin and to say we it was off the hook is a true understatement. As soon as we got to the dining area we were taken a back by the punch in the eye views from the Aquarium’s windows and then being greeted by the celeb chef herself. Sandlin formerly of Abercrombie who now is working at Cinghiale Restaurant put on quite the cooking demo and took questions from attendees about being on the hit Bravo show “Top Chef” season six. The Classic Catering People served the wonderful three courses Marvesta Shrimp menu, which is a sustainable seafood choice that is available in our region along with perfect wine pairings. It was a great group including National Aquarium’s big fish, David Pittance, Dr. Erik Rifkin, Laura Bankey, Jamie Kofsky , Diane Macklin and “Top Chef” devotee Catherine Simanski to name a very few. No better way to end the evening than a stroll through the gorgeous aquarium. There are still 2 remaining dining events but the next one featuring Chef Bryan Voltaggio of VOLT is sold out but there are some slots available for June 22nd featuring Woodberry Kitchen’s Chef Jill Snyder. Go to the National Aquarium in Baltimore’s website http://www.aqua.org for tickets to this wonderful dining experience.
Even though it’s the Ravens off-season our players are not the only ones in the organization keeping their fit on. Ravens.com journalist extraordinaire, Mike Duffy recently participated in the Paul’s Place “Squeal Appeal” 5K run fundraiser, which started at M&T Bank Stadium and proceeded through the Washington Village/ Pigtown community that Paul’s Place serves. This wonderful organization helps its community members survive and serves as a place for them to gather for a hot meal, guidance and support programs. I hear that Mike Duffy nailed the race with a 23:15 time and loved all the cheering from the Pigtown residents, according to his twitter entry. For more information on this organization go to http://www.paulsplaceoutreach.org

PERSONAL NOTE OF THANKS
I wanted to take the time to thank all of you for the tremendous support over the past few months in dealing with my Mom, Sylvia Badger’s battle with ovarian cancer. After fighting for over two years, and enduring seventeen different types of chemo she lost her battle on February 15th. My stepfather, Bill Badger, my brothers Gordon and John Boone and I were by her side. The outpouring of tributes/ kindness from almost every facet of Baltimore media, politicos, friends, mover and shakers, even those she may have exposed a bit more than they preferred, has been amazing. Mom paved the way in Maryland for those of us that have followed in her footsteps. No doubt she was the original “Liz Smith” of Baltimore and I am so proud to be her daughter. Special thanks to the Sun’s Jacques Kelly on such a lovely obituary and doing his best to have it appear on a Sunday when Mom’s columns appeared in this town for almost 30 years. Again, my family cannot thank all of you enough. Now, as my Mom would want me to do, it’s back to work. Here is to you MOM…
19th Annual Chocolate Affair

How sweet it was; talk about a dream job. For the 3rd year, I was asked to serve as a “celebrity” judge at the 19th annual Chocolate Affair, held last month at M&T Bank Stadium. I don’t really care for sweets but thankfully my dear friend Stephanie Hirschfield stepped up as my palate. The sweetest thing about this event was that it benefited Healthcare for the Homeless. The Club Level was lined with over 52 Baltimore-area vendors, who were showcasing their beautifully designed treats. Now it wasn’t all sweets; I tasted some amazing food from Radhika Sule’s The Rustic Gourmet, in Roland Park, Tony Gambino’s Ciao Bella, in Little Italy, and Michelle Chaustit’s Crush Restaurant. Honorary Chair, former Baltimore Oriole and 1983 World Series MVP, Rick Dempsey, welcomed a record breaking number of 1600 people to the affair, which made organizers very happy and $180,000 for this wonderful organization.

Do you twitter? I do. I’m “Socialspeaking” and I follow the folks from the Owl Bar, in the historic Belvedere, in Baltimore. Last week, they sent out a twiddle of sorts, “Someone famous is eating at the Owl Bar right now, hint: 90’s R&B band that’s named after a street in Mt. Vernon”. Being that it’s the Owl Bar, I replied “WHO-WHO?” (Get it) They got back to me with the answer; it was none other than Dru Hill coming back home to their roots in Baltimore. While at the Owl Bar, the group sipped on Long Island Ice Teas, munched on seafood Cobb salad, shrimp platter, and crab cakes to go. Just so you know, crab cakes and shrimp platters are the Owl Bars specialties that this band had a yum on for as soon as they got back in town.

CALLING ALL LASSIES

Got to give credit where credit is due. Style Magazine’s Editor and man about town, Brian Lawrence gave B&O American Brasserie, 2 N. Charles Street, Baltimore the heads up idea for this one. No doubt this locale will be the prime viewing spot for the St. Patrick’s Day parade on March March 14th, 2010. Now the folks at B& O took Brian’s idea and are running with it. The parade will begin at 2:00p.m. at the Washington Monument an will pass right by the restaurant on its way down Charles Street. So Chef E. Michael Reidt and mixologist master, Brendan Dorr are going to pull out all the stops with food and drink specials throughout the day. Those looking to get into the spirit of the day can enjoy Green Eggs & Ham served with toast and breakfast potatoes ($12) and the traditional Irish dish Corned Beef & Cabbage ($14) from opening until 7 p.m. Guests can also enjoy beverage specials from opening until 7 p.m. including Shamrock Mimosas ($3), pints of Guinness ($3), a specialty St. Patrick’s Day cocktail ($5) and green beer ($3).

FOUR LEGGED FRIENDS NEED OUR HELP

I’m the lucky Mommy to 3 rescue animals and to say they have made my life richer is the understatement of the century. So when I got this letter from Andrew Levine, Executive Director for the Baltimore Humane Society I felt I had to share with all of you and hope you can help them out.

Hi Everyone,

As you know, I have stepped into the Executive Director’s position for the Baltimore Humane Society (BHS) to restructure the business foundation of this wonderful organization that is dear to my heart. I will not be taking a salary, as every penny needs to go to the beautiful pets that are waiting to be adopted. BHS has been saving the lives of animals and serving the Baltimore community for over 86 years. Unfortunately, we are in dire need of cash donations and items that we desperately need to upgrade our operation and facility. Please review these items and let me know if you can donate any of them or can refer us to somebody that can help us with these.

1) Propane Boiler to heat the main shelter building.
          -Our boiler has finally stopped working after 15 years and the cost to repair it is too expensive.
2) 5 Ton 13 S.E.E.R Air Conditioning System for the dog kennels.
         -Currently it gets over 110 degrees in the Dog kennel in the summer.
3) Washer & Dryer
4) Refrigerator to keep medications cool.
5) 20 KW Backup Power Generator to keep shelter heat on in the winter when power goes out and to keep our Power on during surgeries.
6) X-Ray Machine for pets that are dropped off at our shelter from accidents.
7) Painting services to repaint buildings, inside and out.
8) Updated fencing for our kennels as the current fencing is rusting and animals are getting cut quite a bit.
9) Roof and Gutter Repairs for winter storms.
11) Construction Labor. We need lots of repairs and updates to the facility and we are seeking donations of
      Construction Labor.
12) Landscaping that has been damaged from the winter in front of our buildings.
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY

PATHFINDERS FOR AUTISM, a non-profit organization, is celebrating its 10th anniversary. One of my favorite groups of people, Pathfinders for Autism announced recently the kickoff celebration of their 10th anniversary of improving the lives of individuals with autism and their families. The organization is also introducing Miss Maryland Brooke Poklemba as the spokesperson for the milestone year. Pathfinders for Autism was founded in 2000 by a group of parents of children with autism to support and develop lifespan services and provide information and resources for families of children with autism. In honor of their 10th Anniversary, the organization will profile and celebrate ten individuals or families throughout the last decade who have been impacted by Pathfinders or worked closely with the organization to advance its mission.
The campaign, “TENder Moments from Pathfinders for Autism” will include a video profile and feature of the individual/family on the tenth day of each month on Pathfinders website (http://www.PathfindersforAutism.org) and Social Media platforms. The individuals/families will also be highlighted in Pathfinders’ newsletters. “We are very proud of the work we have done over the last ten years to improve the lives of individuals with autism and their families, as well as supporting caregivers,” stated B.J Surhoff, president of Pathfinders for Autism. “Educating the public about Autism is still one of our major objectives so we are honored to be working with Brooke to increase our presence throughout Maryland, while helping those faced with Autism.” As the official representative for Pathfinders for Autism, Miss Maryland Brooke Poklemba will strive to promote awareness and understanding of Autism throughout Maryland, as well as the United States. A graduate of Rhodes College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, she has worked as an applied behavioral analysis (ABA) therapist for children with Autism. Poklemba decided to combine her love of music with her passion for education through the Miss Maryland Organization. As Miss Maryland, she travels throughout the state promoting her personal platform, “Autism Awareness: the importance of early intervention.” “I’m thrilled to be able to use my platform as Miss Maryland to bring greater attention to the work of Pathfinders for Autism,” stated Poklemba. “Placing the Miss Maryland crown alongside Pathfinders will put a spotlight on autism and help share the resources available for children and families throughout the state who are dealing with the diagnosis. Ultimately, I hope that this relationship will bring national attention to the diagnosis and the many resources available.”
NEW AND IMPROVED PAZZA LUNA

I’m sure the new owners of Pazza Luna, in Locust Point, Chef Davide Rossi and his wife Christa never imagined that when they met back in 1999 at Sotto Sopra restaurant in Mt Vernon that eleven years later their love of each other and fine Italian cuisine would have them opening their 2nd establishment. Their first, Ports of Italy is a seasonal restaurant located in the tourist town of Boothbay Harbor, Maine and as of February of this year Charm City just got a whole lot tastier. At a recent Chef’s table dinner a group of us including Downtown Diane, Channel 13’s Ron Matz, Baltimore Eats Magazine’s Celeste Corsaro, Food Service Monthly’s Randi Rom, Examiner.com’s Dara Bunjon, What’s To Eat Baltimore’s food blogger, Liz Stambaugh and myself were treated to one of the best dining experiences. I’m not lying when I tell you I’m still working this off on the treadmill after this multi course dinner. Everything brought out to us was not only amazing in flavor, but also beautiful in its presentation. From the Cream of Crab soup made with milk instead of cream (and it works), In Salata Di Anatra Affumicata, which is a phenomenal salad with thinly sliced, lightly smoked duck breast over arugula, sun-dried tomatoes and a fabulous balsamic dressing, home made Ravioli Di Astice stuffed with lobster and mascarpone topped with shrimp and fresh tomatoes ragout, a beef tenderloin filet- Filetto Piemontese with gorgonzola cheese and a subtle truffle cream sauce and Chef Davide’s Risotto of the Day was a hit. By this time pain had sent in but Christa eased it by a perfect pairing of wonderful wines for each delicious course. Not being a dessert person, I passed but from the reaction of my dinner companions that too was delish. Make sure to put this one on the calendar for date night or any night for that matter. Pazza Luna has a wonderful atmosphere, great food and drink specials. Check out their site http://www.pazzaluna.us
Now back to the treadmill for me…
