This week I will be going into as much detail as I can about this process, because it is an important step when planning your event.

You should start the contract process three to four weeks prior to the event as it requires several signatures as well as at least a week from the time you fill out the check request for your performer for the check to be cut. Here is the step by step process of how the system works.

Step 1: Pick up a blank Student Association contract from either the Student Association Office, on the 3rd floor of the MacVittie College Union, or from my office, 130A in the MOSAIC on the first floor of the union.

Step 2: Fill out the contract completely. If you are unsure how to do this, feel free to stop by my office and I will assist you. In order for a contract to be filled out completely all times, dates, location, contact and payment information needs to be filled out.

Step 3: Once you have completed the contract it needs to be sent out or handed to the performer for their signature.

Step 4: Bring the contract to myself or to Nancy and she will send it to me as it needs my approval, to make sure it is filled out completely before it goes to the SA president (Currently Doug Sinksi, next year Nick Spengler). Once the SA President has seen it and signed it, it goes to Chip Matthews, the Director of College Union and Activities for final approval.

Step 5: Once the contract is returned to Nancy she will notify you. At this time a check request should be filled out by your organization treasurer in order for your performer/speaker to get paid.

Check runs are every Wednesday and your check requests need to be by close of business on the previous Wednesday to make sure it makes the next check run. All contracts must be completed and signed by all parties before any event can be advertised.

There will be a more formal in-depth workshop on contracts on Monday, April 25, 2011 at 7pm in The CU Board Room. Come check it out and check back in later on in the week for a listing of this weekends events!!

Program Advisor Topic of the Week.....

Greetings Students,

I hope everyone is enjoying spring semester and working hard. For those of you who don’t know me I am writing to you as the Student Association Program Advisor and I am going to use this space to keep you informed as well as assist in any programming needs you might have as you navigate the last month and a half of the year. I will keep a weekly list of what’s going on with SA, ACE and other SA organizations. Every week there is going to be a new topic regarding programming. I have had a lot of questions about particular areas so I will try and do the best I can to answer those questions and keep you informed about what’s relevant to your organization.

Topic of the Week: CAS Grants!!

This week I would like address concerns surrounding CAS Grants. CAS offers a great program designed to assist student groups with catering concerns for their event or individual organizations. CAS offers two different Grants; Small and Large. The small grant is up to $100. Student organizations can take out this grant once a semester and it can be used for smaller events, or individual organization events that don’t have to be open to the Geneseo community. To obtain this grant you must fill out the grant application and submit it, along with a detailed letter explaining the event, and a general idea of the menu to the CAS office in Blake 201 A, 10 business days prior to the event. The Large Grant can be up to $500. This grant can only be used once a semester and the event must be open to the entire Geneseo campus community. To obtain this grant, you must fill out and submit the application along with a detailed letter of the event and a general menu to CAS at least 15 business days prior to your event. Examples of groups that have used these grants are the Alliance for Community Enrichment organizations for their cultural dinners, Invisible Children for their Displace Me event, and Activities Commission for Siblings Weekend. These grants can be used for just about any or all types of events on campus. If you have further questions feel free to ask.

Let me know if there is a specific topic you have questions about!!

Budget Advocacy and You

Fellow Student,

The Student Association is doing its best to try to protect the SUNY system from budget cuts which are harmful to all of our educations. But we need your help. SA is sending a bus of students to Albany on Tuesday, March 23 in order to have students meet with legislators in person to discuss there concerns. Please consider coming with us for a day of budget advocacy! Tickets are on sale now in the College Union ticket office, and the cost is a $10 fully refundable deposit (when you get on the bus, you get your money back). As was approved at last weeks meeting, the executive committee strongly supports the Higher Education Empowerment act, and we hope that you read up on this important legislation for yourself to find out where you stand.

Here are some links to learn more about the budget and how it affects us, as well as the proposed legislation in the assembly:

Lamron Editorial

Where we stand on the budget

More information on the budget

Comments by the SUNY Chancellor on the proposed legislation

President Dahl's article on the proposed legislation

Governor Paterson's Proposal Summary

Please stand with us as we stand up for SUNY Geneseo and the quality of education we are all here to receive. With the passage of this legislation, we can continue to add to the value and meaning of our college degree.

Thank you,

Nicholas Kaasik

SA Legal Services

The Student Association offers free initial legal consultations to any fee paying (essentially all full time) students at SUNY Geneseo.
