I think the time has come to admit to myself that I'm not going to be writing anything here again for some time.
I've had a blast doing this thing over the last few years (nearly 4... bloody hell!), and I couldn't have done it without the initial encouragement of my good good friend GS.
When I had just moved somewhere horrible and had no way of getting to see my friends he had the very bright idea that I should start up an mp3 blog and write about my record collection... I didn't even know what a bloody mp3 blog was, but after a bit of fumbling we managed to stumble on a feel that has stuck ever since, never taking ourselves too seriously and having a bit of a laugh along the way.

There have been a number of friends who have chipped in and given up their time to write for SVC...
Rowche, Mike S (Medium Asleep), Rachel Littlepants, Dominic J, Bobby W, Leon (from supplies), Joe C, Dan (The Greatest Ape) and lastly but by no means least, Elizabeth, who along the way willingly became Mrs SVC.
I want to thank every single one of them, without them this place would never have been the same.
And also not forgetting to thank all the bands who either didn't mind that we had written about them or have sent us stuff to write about.

In the list above there is over 800 tracks we've lovingly written about, and that's not counting a number of posts that have vanished into the aether never to be seen or heard from again (and I can't remember what they were...), there was also countless other tracks we posted in the comments or cunningly stealthed (well, sometimes anyway) in the posts.
Below is one of them there music player things with a selection of some of the tracks that appeared on SVC, give them a listen, and if there's something there you fancy just type the artist or something into the search box over in the sidebar to read the post and find links to the artists pages and buy links and so on, after all, that's primarily what this was all about really.

Well, that's it I guess... the end of a chapter in my life, and one that never seemed like a chore, but always a pleasure.
I do have some different plans for Spoilt Victorian Child though, so keep an eye (or ear) open. And who knows, I might start writing here again some time in the future, but at the moment the record label and other projects are taking up my time, which is a nice position to be in.

Once in a while I stumble upon some great music. I then go out and buy their CD's or records and play them to death.
Sadly though, Ringo Deathstarr didn't have any records out, so I asked if I could put one out for them.
They said yes. Woo Hoo!!!
And this is the result.

The debut release by Ringo Deathstarr, which also happens to be the debut CD release on Spoilt Victorian Child Records.

It's a stunning collection of 5 tracks that just ooze fuzzy noise-pop quality.
I could go on and on about how utterly brilliant this EP is, and that it's a debut record as good as I've ever heard and so on and so on...
But I reckon you might think I'm a little biased.

Forget Funky Friday, this is Scuzzy Sunday!
Sometimes all you want to hear is a big slab of scuzzzz...
And Novice push all the right buttons, Sabbath, Butties, early Flaming Lips, they're all in there. What a lovely retro rock racket.
After growing up on Punk, Post-Punk, Electronica, ABBA and Psychedelia the Butthole Surfers hit my ears in the early to mid Eighties and battered their way in like a jack hammer, that was it for me. They changed my listening habits for a good decade.
Novice write songs that hark back to those days, all solid riffs and messed up tunes with Butties style weirdness, albeit not as full on and in your face, but it's still there. And it comes as no surprise at all to find that Novice hail from the very same hot bed of messed up rock, Austin, Texas.
I guess they might get a little fed up of the comparisons, but to me it would be a massive compliment, and I hope they take it that way. Like I said, sometimes you just can't beat a big slab of scuzzy rock.

I have absolutely no idea how I first heard Nyack back in 1994. None of my mates had heard of them or had their records that I remember, nor can I really remember hearing them on the radio anywhere.
They just seem to be one of those bands that appear in your record collection, thankfully though.
Savage Smile was the debut release from Nyack in 1994, they originated from Nyack in New York, but re-located to London and got signed to Echo Records. They released two singles, 'Savage Smile' & I'm Your Star' and an album, '11 Track Player', before parting company with Echo Records and re-surfacing a year or so later as Fork.
I only know all of this (apart from the releases) as I've just payed a trip to their MySpace page as I thought I should at least know something about the band and tracks that I've listened to on and off for over a decade.
I don't honestly know why more people hadn't heard of them at the time, I guess the fact that I don't really remember reading much about them at the time either might have something to do with it.
Musically they're on the gentler side of Shoegaze. More indie-pop than ball blistering squalling feedback. But I really like their music, and their version of Eurythmics 'Love Is A Stranger' would normally pass me by due to the gentle style, but it's just wonderful, and to this day one of my favourite covers...
Mind you, it was a cracking song in the first place.

Here's to all those bands that you have no idea how you got into, but love them all the same.

Some of you might have noticed a little red, black and yellow square over in the left hand sidebar under SVC Recommends. Clicking this could lead you to a joyful place if you were so inclined. I'm of course talking about Space Needle's 'Recordings 1994-1997' released by Eenie Meenie records earlier this year.

Space Needle were formed in 1994 by former Scarce drummer Jud Ehrbar and his co-conspirator in sound manipulation, Jeff Gatland. They released an album called 'Voyager' as a two piece.
Shortly after the release, fellow space noisenik Dan Efram joined to make a trio of like minded trip merchants.
Now, I love 'Voyager', but it wasn't until they released their follow up album in 1997 that things just got very very very good indeed.
'The Moray Eels Eat The Space Needle' is such an incredible album, it sounds like so many other things, but at the same time like nothing else on earth, well, at least back in 1997. The Animal Collective and the like have been having a cracking stab at it since and doing a bloody good job of it.

On one hand you have a reverb drenched slow picked drone like the beautiful 'Bladewash', and at the same time you have the bonkers freeform space jazz noise of 'Where The Fuck's My Wallet' with stunningly gorgeous tracks like 'Never Lonely Alone', 'One Kind of Lullaby' and 'Love Left Us Strangers' spread throughout the album. I honestly think it's one of the most underrated albums I've heard. I can see why it didn't gel with some people, mainly for the reasons why I love it. The diversity of styles on the album could put some people off. Nutso Jazz tinged noise-outs followed by blissed out hangover music, but this is why I love it so much.

Anyway, back to the 'Recordings 1994-1997'
It basically does what it says on the tin in that it's a compilation culled from all of their releases, which sadly only amounts to the two albums and a couple of singles. It's a corker of a compilation and every aspect of the bands output is covered (although 'Bladewash' isn't on it), and you should own it....
Then pay a visit to eBay or something and try and find the other four records.

And here as a little treat is my favourite track by Scarce, in all it's lo-fi jump about post grunge indie disco glory, and it is glorious.
I used to play this out a hell of a lot.

Battant - Kevin (1989)

Battant have been around for a while now and have released a couple of very collectible singles. But their next release sees them taking their rudimentary (but perfecly formed) electronic sound to newer heights with the single 'Kevin (1989)' that's being released next month on Kill The DJ records. The B-Side also features an Andrew Weatherall remix.
They now sound like a fully formed band, all punchy guitars, catchy vocals and jump around and shake your fringe* rhythms, but still retaining elements of their earlier electro-pop-isms.

The song was written by Battant singer Chloe based on the diary entries of a bloke called Kevin.
6 or 7 years ago Chloe's friend was helping refurbish a North London pub. Down in the basement there's a door, padlocked shut. They pry it open to find a room littered with betting slips, with a small folding cot bed and a blue Langham Diary from 1989. Inside the book is Kevin's provisional driver's license. Her friend tries to work out who this Kevin is, but never gets anywhere with it. A few years later the diary is passed on to Chloe.

This Kevin bloke sounds like a right tosser, and not someone I'd ever like to know. But his misogynistic meanderings from the late Eighties have led to this song being recorded...
But I wouldn't go playing it round your Mum's house or your great Aunty Edie's as you'll probably get a bloody good clip round the ear.

Great song though.

I can't believe I've been doing this blog for so long without mentioning the mighty Public Image Ltd. So here's a few of my favourite tracks.

I guess I'll start with PiL's debut album 'First Edition' which was home to their signature track 'Public Image'.
For those Sex Pistols fans that had heard the debut single 'Public Image' by Lydon's new band PiL, and thought that the first album would be following the same lines as the single probably came in for a real real shock.
And if they were in any doubt that it was going to be a continuation of The Sex Pistols then the follow up single 'Death Disco' and 'First Issue's' opening track 'Theme' would have blown any such ideas right out of the water... Gloriously.

Not only is 'First Issue' as scathing and angry like the Pistols, although even more so, but it's also full of angular rhythms, repetition, scratching guitars and gut exploding lo end bass supplied by Jah Wobble.
This experimentation and sound was taken to even higher heights on their follow up album 'Metal Box'.
Possibly one of the greatest and most important albums of the post punk era, or any era for that matter.
I can't stress how utterly stunning this album is.
Everything about it just screams out quality, from the songs to the packaging to the incredible sound quality. Part of the reason it was released in a metal tin was to house the three 12" discs that played at 45rpm so as to get the best quality sound from the pressing. Well, that and the fact that it looks bloody ace.
Many albums that a couple of decades later are transfered to CD get an overhaul in the form of re-mastering and the like, but this was recorded so bloody well that it didn't need it, and I doubt that any amount of knob twiddling could make it sound any better. 'Careering' and 'Poptones' proving my point pretty well I think.
If you don't own this yet then you should run out to your local music emporium and purchase a copy right now...

But obviously not until you've listened to my fourth PiL offering taken from their third album 'Flowers of Romance'.
This album is a different kettle of fish from the previous PiL albums. It's as biting and as irreverent, and still sounds like nothing else on earth, but musically on the whole it's stripped down to it's percussive elements and drones, perfectly executed on the track 'Banging The Door'.
This album also spawned the surprise hit in the single 'Flowers of Romance'. How weird was it seeing this on Top of The Pops when you were a kid... It left me scarred for life.

Finally I'm going to pick another of my favourite tracks and possibly the last truly great thing they released, 'Blue Water'.
This was released in 1983 as the b-side of the smash hit 'This is Not a Love Song'. Again, never one to play it safe, think of all the pop kids who thought that 'Love Song' was good little tune and saved their pocket money to buy the single, get it home and play the flipside only to be confronted by a song with a strange rhythm, whale like noises and a song about guts being chewed... nice.

And so ends my little journey into one of the most innovative bands to feature someone called Wobble in them.

I first heard Bodies of Water in 2005 when I got their self titled ep and instantly fell in love with it, especially the lead track 'Here Comes My Hand' which just blew me away with it's catchy woo wooo's and pounding chorus with super high pitched vocals. As I said, I loved it, I added it to my recommended sidebar thing and it stayed there for some time, but regrettably I never wrote about it for one reason or another, I think possibly it was during one of my moves.

Anyway, that was then...
Today I was very happy to find their new album 'Ears Will Pop & Eyes Will Blink' on my doorstep....
Bloody hell it's good, I'm only a couple of listens in but I have a feeling this is going to be one of my favourite albums of 2007, if not THE favourite... It's that good.
It's a cracking album, ranging from the slow burning and broody to the completely uplifting in your face up-ness. This is the sort of album you could listen to loads and still find something new in it, and it has more melodies than you can shake a stick at.

I have a feeling that by tomorrow I'll have another two favourite tracks from the album, but for the moment my favourite track from that single in 2005 has been given a work over here and what then was a stunning track sounds even better now, crisper, punchier and improved all round.
And a close second to 'Here Comes My Hand' is the wonderful 'These Are The Eyes'...
With it's bombastic intro going into a melodramatic sounding bit and leading into a speedy-up bit towards the end... perfect.

But don't take my word for it, have a listen to these tracks then buy it.

Mountain - Nantucket Sleighride (To Owen Coffin)

Many of you from the UK will recognise this old soft proggy rock track from 'World in Action' **(EDIT: thanks to dickvandyke for pointing out that my memory is shit, and that it's actually the theme tune from 'Weekend World', cheers dvd.)**, the weekly news program, as the end of the track was used for its titles.

For many many years I hadn't even considered that the theme had been knicked and that it was just recorded specially for the show, but having stumbled upon it by accident a good few years ago I instantly fell in love with the lumpen stodgyness of it all, I really don't know why, it's just a cracking, cracking track.

After having heard the track for a few years I still really didn't know what the hell it was all about until I read a book about the whaling ship 'The Essex' that the story of 'Moby Dick' was based on, and in the story of the Essex there was a cabin hand named Owen Coffin.

The Essex was hit by a huge Sperm whale and wrecked leaving a few lifeboats of people awash. One of these boats drifted for months, stopping off on desert islands whenever they found one, but ultimately they were starving to death, and ended up drawing a lot to see who would sacrifice them self for the good of the rest of the crew... erm! basically, who was to be eaten!
And Owen Coffin was the 'winner'. The captain tried to talk him out of it and take his place but Owen was having none of it...
He was killed and eaten and kept the remaining survivors left for several days until they were finally rescued... (end of history lesson)

Anyway, this song is dedicated to him, the silly bugger.

When I first heard this track I went out and bought a couple of albums by Mountain, to be honest I wish I hadn't, they're not very good, but I do love this track.

I know it's been a little quiet round these parts the last month or so, but I've been busy settling into married life, and I reckon everyone else has been a bit busy or something like that (I know Liz has been busy moving The Roaring Machine to a brand new spanking home, or should that be brand spanking new home???), but have no fear, there will be a couple of brand new SVC'ers along pretty soon, and I'm sure Leon, Simon, and Liz will be back round here plying their wares again.

Kiiiiiii - 4 Little Joeys

I really don't know what to say about this little bit of wonderfully mad Japanese shoutabout experimental art pop, apart from it's wonderfully shouty, experimentaly, arty and poppy and Kiiiiiii hail from Japan.
To get the full effect though you have to go and watch the video on YouTube (linky below), looks and sounds like they have a lot of fun.
The video's taken from their new DVD 'Gold and Silver'.

Melissa and Hiram from the lovely Harvey Girls sent me a link to the video and I instantly fell in love with it, thanks guys.
So after several plays I thought I'd try and find a web page, success, and double double good, this track is available to download.

'4 Little Joeys' appeared on a 7" only limited release from 2005.
I guess I'm going to be trawling eBay.
And as another lovely little downloadable treat from their website is this cracking minimal but cute version of 'Brown Girl In The Ring' taken from their latest album "Al & Bum" which was released earlier this month, sadly I can't find anywhere to buy the bloody thing either, apart from on Japanese Amazon...

What a bloody great track...
This has been floating around my brain for about a quarter of a century now.
It's time to release it and set it free.

Back in the day I was a bit of a teeny Gothic Punk with hair all over the place and decked out in nothing but black, I look at the few remaining pictures of me from back then and just laugh...
What a tit.

But a hell of a lot of the music I was listening to in my post punk years like Bauhaus, Specimen, The Birthday Party, UK Decay, Alien Sex Fiend, Early Sisters of Mercy and a host of others has just stuck with me, although I think some of it is quite silly nowadays, but in a good way.

Bauhaus and The Birthday Party had been around for a few years by the time 1982 hit and I'd grown accustomed to the abuse of hairspray when it brought us The Batcave, it was basically a nightclub that a whole movement had attached itself to. I never went, distance and age (or lack of) being the main reasons, but when the album "Batcave: Young Limbs And Numb Hymns" was released in 1983 I was there in spirit.
It was the opening two tracks that really stood out for me, the first being "Dead Man's Autochop" by Specimen (more on them sometime soon) followed by this little beauty.

Sexbeat started their life as the brainchild of The Batcave resident DJ Hamish joined by most boy goths wet dreams Sophie (see pic) and Linzi.
They only ever recorded three tracks, Sexbeat, Sweat and Pump (I see a bit of theme here...).
On the back of the Sexbeat track they recorded for the Young Limbs album they were signed by ABC Records in the US and recorded the other two tracks for them, but alas were never released (although Sweat turned up on one of those Gothic Rock CD's a few years back)

Anyway, dig out your Insette, back-comb your hair and flail around the room like it's the end of the world...

Chris Montez - The More I See You

Blimey!!!
What a couple of weeks I've had.
If you've been following what's been going on in my life this year you'll know that my life has been completely turned around by the most wonderful person in the world...
Liz.
I had pretty much given up on being happy again, and almost certainly given up on being so happy with somebody that I'd want to spend the rest of my life with them, then Liz came into my life.
I've written about how we met before so wont go into it so much again, but if you missed it then you can read all about it here.
In a nutshell, I fell in love with her the moment I saw her, nothing could have prepared me for how much I felt for her, and the most amazing thing was that it became apparent very quickly that she felt the same as me. So naturally after only a few days I did what any old romantic did and proposed to her while doing a podcast...
And she said yes.
The worst time was when Liz went back to Tennessee after her far too short visit, the time was taken up with missing her incredibly and getting all my paperwork together for her Marriage Visa application, but it all got sorted out and we had a date for her to move here, along with an idea of when we could get married.
We thought it would be the best thing to get married after about a month of her being here, that would be enough time to get everything sorted out for the big and happy day. The 23rd of June fitted the bill perfectly and was the first free Saturday we could get.
Now a week before the Wedding something occurred to me, that the 23rd was awfully close to the anniversary of my Dad passing away, which was the 25th of June 3 years ago, then something else went pop inside my head, my Dad died two days after me starting Spoilt Victorian Child, which would make our Wedding day the third anniversary of when I started this thing you're reading now to the day!!!
I'm not a big believer in fate whatsoever, but this just seemed far too spooky, yet completely fitting as Spoilt Victorian Child was a major reason we met in the first place. And so the 23rd it was.

While planning the Wedding thoughts always turned to what music we'd like played, in fact I reckon more time was spent discussing that than pretty much anything else.
We weren't going to do a traditional first dance, basically the whole reception wasn't that traditional or conventional as there were no speeches or anything like that, and it was a Zombie and the Un-dead themed night, so lots of zombies staggering around... we wanted a fun, stress free day and night, and it turned out just that.

The morning of our Wedding was a really relaxed affair as everything had fallen perfectly into place with no worries. I went and put my suit on and was sat waiting in the living room for Liz to get changed into her dress....
She walked through the door and I swear I nearly burst into tears, she looked absolutely stunning, I mean, she always does, but this time even more so. I wont bore you all with all the details of the Wedding, but it was basically the happiest I'd ever ever been.

Anyway, so to the music. We weren't really too worried about what music would be played as two of my bestest friends were dj'ing so they had a pretty damn good idea of what we would love played... The Wedding Present, New Order, Talulah Gosh, The Mighty Fall, Electric Light Orchestra, Weather Prophets, We've Got A Fuzzbox And We're Going To Use It, ABBA, Sexbeat, Amii Stewart, The Sisters of Mercy, Aphex Twin, Neil Diamond, Specimen, Magazine, Joy Division, The Bats, Harry Nillson, The Rentals, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, you know the sort of thing....
But we put a couple of CD's together anyway just in case they got a little stuck.
While thinking about what to have played Liz had remembered a post I did a couple of years back when I posted this Chris Montez track stating that I would love to have it played at my Wedding, I was single back then and had no idea that one day the girl who had written about a piece of music I'd recorded would be standing in front of me as my wife with the biggest smile....
And this was the perfect music.
Oh happy day...

It now sits on our mantelpiece with a Wedding present from my sister, a picture of my Dad with his first grandchild... my sisters daughter Toni.

As mentioned before, the Wedding was just two days before the third anniversary of my lovely Dad's death.
If I could have wished for just one thing it's that my Dad could have been there with us.
He would have adored Liz.
I still miss him so so much, and when I had a little cry when we'd got back from the Wedding before going to the reception, Liz was there, and turned my tears of regret into tears of happiness. That's something special right there.
He really really would have loved Liz. Truly.

I have nothing more to say on the subject other than I was just eating a delicious Sunday roast dinner and this came on and I thought by crikey this is good. Dinner and song you know!

Primal Scream - Shoot Speed Kill Light

Erm well not really... I'm making a couple of CDs to play at Simon and Liz's wedding knees-up on Sat and I stumbled upon this old chestnut. It's been ages since I listened to XTRMNTR but by crikey this song, this song, what a steamroller!

When Bernard's guitar slices through the end with Shieldsy's racket clattering away it's enough to make a institutionalised old lag such as I to get the invisible drumsticks out. I loves it Brynn.

So I was going to give you the tale about being ever so slightly inebriated on a bus in Kentish Town listening to the album when it had just come out and how as a great finale Shoot Speed Kill Light nearly burst my eardrums and made me jump out of my socks but another time, another place perhaps. For now I need to dig out me suit, polish off a very dusty pair of shoes that live under the bed and prepare myself for the impending bumpy flight to Manxland.

Athletico Spizz '80 - Airships

There were many incarnations of groups fronted by Kenneth Spiers (aka Spizz) including Spizzoil, Spizzenergi and Spizzles amongst a few others, but here we have a track from Spizz's (?) debut album from 1980 and was recorded under the moniker Athletico Spizz '80.
Spizz bands had been around for a few years by this point and had already had their most commercial success with 'Where's Captain Kirk' the previous year, but I'm opting for the closing track on Athletico's album 'Do a Runner'.
It's a glorious eight and a half minutes of one of my favourite riffs ever and includes virtually no words and some of the best bits of very hi howling ever put down on vinyl. Talking of which, I apologise for the crackles and slightly wobbly sound, it's from my old LP, I did nearly have a bit of luck while looking on t'internet wherupon I stumbled across the official Spizz website and they have the whole album available to download, but alas all the links are dead.
Anyway, as for the rest of the 'Do a Runner' album... well to be honest it's not that great. There are a couple of tracks that are ok, but basically it's a bit of a dud, which is a real shame as by this stage they'd built up a really good strong following. But the album received very damp reviews, and add to that there wasn't anything really close to being a catchy single in the vein of 'Where's Captain Kirk' on it, but it did bring us this track, an absolute corker I hope you'll agree.
Spizz is still going strong nowadays though and is still gigging up and down the country.

On a different subject completely, me and Liz are getting married on Saturday...
Wooooo!
So this might be my last posty for a couple of weeks or something as we're buggering off to London next week to stare at the locals and eat cockles.

You know when you first see a band you might have a rough idea of what they'll sound like... Sonic Youth... yep, Mudhoney... certainly, Steps... yep, Michael Bolton... erm!
Well Age of Chance were a little different. I'd read about them in the inky music press for a while along with seeing pictures of them, but not heard them until The Whistle Test (they'd dropped the old and grey by this stage I think).
The cycling outfits, the attitude, the beats, the guitars, the guitars, the guitars.
Bloody ace.
And after that I just had to own their records, and what records they were, not only the great music, but you also got those stunning stunning sleeves designed by The Designers Republic. Catch a glimpse of one of them in the corner of your eye in a record shop left you with no doubt who it was by.

Age of Chance formed in Leeds in the early eighties, but didn't really make an impact until 1986 when they were featured on the now legendary C86 tape given away free with the NME.
This appearance and a session for Sir John Peel led to them signing for Sheffield's FON (Fuck Off Nazi) label whereupon they recorded their now infamous version of Prince's 'Kiss', included here for your listening pleasure along with the b-side 'Crash Conscious'. Together creating one of my favourite ever 7" singles.
Cracking.

As far as I know there's only one member of AoC still involved in music actively and that's their bass player Geoff T.....

Line Dancers on Acid - I'm Back Baby

Geoff has been working under a couple of different monikers.
Firstly there is Sonic Avenger putting together mixtapes of the very highest quality, while Miss Kubelik is the downtempo cousin, and Line Dancers on Acid is the old school beats and fat analogue squelchy wing of Geoff's persona.

It's the fat squelchy anologisms that get me every time, and bloody hell he's good at it.
At the moment there are only a couple of tracks out there, but I'm sure you'll be hearing a lot lot more from LDOA in the very near future, and there are also rumours that Sonic Avenger will be recording again in a similar vein to Age of Chance...
I can't bloody wait.

The Halloweens of my younger years were spent dressed as either one of two abominable creatures - a sulky thing wearing all black, or a sulky thing wearing all black and a cape. Growing up in the 80s, though, this didn't put me out much as the only other easily obtained costume options were those horrible mass produced jobs where the bottom half of the costume was a tarp that actually said what you were supposed to be, and came with a plastic mask that smelled like cockles.

Well, until the year my mum decided to dress me as Ian Astbury. It took one black leotard, eight scarves, two pixie boots, and a lot of eye-liner.

"What are you supposed to be, a female pirate?" asked my church counselor. My aunt said she really liked my "gypsy costume". If I'd had the white leggings, I think more people would have gotten it in one, but by the end of the day, I was telling people that my costume was Ian Astbury, a secret character from the Street Fighter video game.

My mother claimed her costume brainstorm came out of her love for The Cult's new album, Sonic Temple (1989), but I honestly think it was payback for making her play 'She Sells Sanctuary' on repeat for four solid years during school drop-offs and pick-ups...and singing the wrong words at that. And the hot Texas sun/makes my back burn/and the Texas sun/makes my back/makes my back burn. And so on. I was six.

The tracks have been composed by two of the reprobates from the previous release 'Late Comers', namely Mike Seed and The Palace Lido (dissolved). Co-writing credit on the last track (and album highlight) 'A Brackish Spirit' is shared with The Grinning Ape. Yes he of the famous 'The Greatest Ape' SVC007 release.

The track posted here today is simply to whet the appetite and in fact didn't make it onto the final album. It's one of those skull rattling clarian calls. You know the effect, Braaid hall eisteddfod, huge vat of questionable hot-pot, ACDC/Maiden on the record player. Head-banging to keep up with your peers, vomiting all the way home with a headache from Hell. This is the essence of the song.

Right, so flash back with me (LOST-style) to a few months ago...It's bedtime at Spoilt Victorian Mansion and Simon's just showing me how to hook-up my iPod to the bedroom stereo, except that I've cocked it up as usual and set the bloody thing to 'shuffle'. For the next half-hour, then, we endure the first 10 seconds of what must be every single song on the player because NO SIR I CANNOT POSSIBLY GO TO BED WITHOUT LISTENING TO THE MAN FROM DELMONTE.

Right, so flash back with me again (LOST-style optional) to 1987. Not a lot of jolly stuff happened in 1987 - the dusky seaside sparrow became officially and completely extinct, the Kings Cross fire killed over 30 people in London, and Prozac was released onto the US pharmaceutical market. However, in Manchester, the Man from Del Monte was saying "Yes, yes yes (Mike West start band) yes!" and so The Man from Delmonte was formed.

It's a bit hard to describe The Man from Delmonte and if you conjure up your typical image of an 80s band from Manchester your head will be filled, and rightly so, with thoughts of dour faced men in duffel coats, not harmonicas, banjos and yes, the joys of living (think of a slightly more polished Waterboys).

"My Love is Like A Gift You Can't Return" is my favorite Man from Delmonte song, and one of my favorite songs of all time. It has the loveliest, catchiest boy-girl choruses in all of pop-dom (thanks Mike and Sheila) and if you're nursing a broken heart, nothing will do you more good than screwing up your courage and shouting "Don't pay me off with your pity!" and then (possibly) sliding around in yer socks on a slick floor. Yes, indeed.

There's only a handful of material available from the band, and some of it is going for quite a lot on Ebay and the like (so, if you have a vinyl copy of Big Noise and you need to make some quick cash, now's the time), but they've appeared on several compilations (This is Manchester, The Sound of Leamington Spa, which is how I first head them), so it's probably best to check a charity shop near you.

Those Monkees eh? Don't you just love them. Look at young Dolenz running all over the shop, look at little Peter Tork, what a dummy. Ah how we laughed. What fun. Their show was a favourite of mine as a kid because they looked cool and yet were stoopid, what a perfect combination. It's only as I have grown wise with age and temperament that I actually hear the music, before it used to just stop at 'The Theme'.

However I'm not here to extol the virtues of the 'FAB FOUR!' (No not those Liverpudlian fabrications), instead let me introduce a video of a young Tim Buckley playing 'Song To Siren' on the Monkees TV Show in March '68. Taken from the episode "The Frodis Caper" of which I know absolutely nothing about I just wikked this off of the Wikipedia, the vids good though don't you agree?

Well hello from Simon James (or Simon II given Simon SVC's attempt to turn his esteemed corner of the internet into a Gormanesque Simonfest) and thanks to Simon for inviting me to join the SVC family. I have a sneaking suspicion that he's only taking on staff to enable him to introduce Elizabeth to the delights of the Isle Of Man, (and no that's not a euphemism, the IOM powers that be don't allow them), however regardless of the reason I'm pleased to have been asked.

And so to Popcorn - to me everything always starts with Popcorn...

Popcorn is easily my favourite track of all time (it would be the one record from eight I'd ensure I took on my desert island if the invite ever came). As a kid I was aware of the tune by it's regular use as incidental music for a variety of TV programmes (and as the theme tune for the super camp Patrick's Pantry - a local TV chef slot during the days when the terms "TV", "chef" and "celebrity" were rarely combined) however it wasn't until I stumbled upon it years later on a compilation tape curated by a friend, (step forward Mr Andrew Rayner), that I realised its genius.

The original version by Gershon Kingsley (surely worthy of investigation on name alone) was released on his 1969 album Music to Moog By and is a pleasingly out there version very much of it's time however the version closest to my heart is from 1972 by the mighty Hot Butter - a wonderful concoction of early electronica that overlays a quietly understated rhythm shuffling around in a world of it's own. At well under three minutes it's almost as near pop perfection as it's possible to get and the great thing is it's available on a whole host of long since abandoned compilation albums in a charity shop in a town near you.

This has been around the net for a while now and quite rightly so has generated a lot of praise. I do have a friend who saw it and said that Leone without Morricone is like a biscuit without cheese which is a fair point but even so I still think that this is top notch. OK, you can't really go wrong with the footage as it's absolutely flawless and the lyrics don't really match the action but by jove it's completely stirring, the hairs on the back of my neck were tingling.

Magnificent!
