It’s that time of year again! Get ready put on your glad rags for the annual SVC Ball. This year it is taking place at the Holland House Hotel, Cardiff and early bird tickets cost just £29.50.

It promises to be a brilliant night, so why not get together and book a table as a project? Also, feel free to bring along your housemates, friends or partners for what promises to be a truly memorable night – everyone is welcome!

Pub Quiz Social

It’s time to get your brains in gear and take on the challenge of the SVC Pub Quiz! This is your chance to impress your fellow SVCers with your amazing general knowledge – or lack of knowledge as the case may be!

It will be at the Tair Pluen/Three Feathers pub (next door to the Owain Glyndwr pub – see map) and kicks off at 9ish, so make sure you’re there in plenty of time to grab a table and a drink

Halloween Spooktacular Social

The Halloween Spooktacular Social is fast approaching. Following hot on the heels of the Launch Party this promises to be a night no to miss! The night is taking place upstairs at the Owain Glyndwr pub in Cardiff.

Entry is free and as well as a great chance for volunteers to meet up, there will be great drinks offers and games throughout the night – so get planning your costume now!

Swine Flu Guidance

As the number of confirmed cases of swine flu in the UK continues to grow (it has now passed 10,000), I am writing to inform you of the procedure SVC has in place to deal with volunteers who either contracted the virus themselves, or is volunteering with somebody who has been positively confirmed as having, or is suspected of having, the virus. I would like to take this opportunity to ask you familiarise yourself with the procedures for reducing the possibility of transmission of the virus and for reporting flu-like illness.

Although the current pandemic is above the threshold level for normal seasonal flu activity, it is important to realise that the majority of cases continue to be mild and short-lived.

To ensure clarification the following guidance is being provided for SVC volunteers:

If anyone experiences Swine Flu symptoms then they should refrain from volunteering on their project. If you have concerns that anyone you are placed with are displaying the symptoms, end your volunteering session and contact the SVC office.

If you feel unwell you should contact NHS Direct or your GP for advice. Any volunteer who is unwell with flu-like symptoms should report their illness by directly contacting the staff in the SVC office, advising them why they are unwell and therefore unable volunteer.

If you have any particular concerns or questions as an SVC volunteer, please contact the SVC Office.

PLEASE NOTE: SVC Projects are only available to students at Cardiff University. Students of other universities or colleges should contact their Student Union or Cardiff Voluntary Community Service.

SVC 2009 Launch Party

Tuesday 13th October, 7pm, Live Lounge

Its our first social of the year and with your support it’s going to be a great one! It’s being held in The Live Lounge (which used to be Bar Cuba), so expect a great live band and great drinks offers!

The theme this year is all things Pirate! And the great news is that Titivate (the fancy dress shop in the Union) is giving a 10% discount on Pirate realated fancy dress for groups of 2 or more people who buy from there. Just let them know your out with SVC!

We hope to see you all there and are looking forward to some fun social times to celebrate the great work you all do as volunteers!

Volunteering Fayre 2009

5.30pm – 8pm, Monday 28th September, Great Hall, Students Union.

The SVC Volunteering Fayre is your chance to find out about all the amazing opportunities that SVC has to offer. You can signup to all of our different projects, as well as find opportunities offered by external charities and organisations.

Pick up your SVC Projects Guide on your way in to read about all our different projects. The coordinators from every project will be there to answer your questions and let you know about the great training that you’ll receive as an SVC volunteer.

Can’t make the Fayre? Then pop into the SVC Office on the 3rd Floor of the Students Union to find out more.
